O’berg a tourism power

The Overberg region has quietly emerged as one of the Western Cape’s most significant tourism powerhouses, with visitor spending creating ripple effects that extend far beyond the coastal towns and into the heart of our agricultural communities.

According to Frieda Lloyd, manager of Overberg Economic Development and Tourism, the secret to the region’s success lies in a unique partnership between two key sectors. “Tourism and Agriculture are the dual engines of the Overberg economy, together forming the backbone of our regional GDP,” explains Lloyd. “Tourism historically contributes 10% to 15% of the Western Cape’s total tourism value, but its true strength lies in its synergy with our agricultural sector.”

This synergy has given birth to what Lloyd describes as the region’s “Agri-Tourism Advantage”, which has transformed the Overberg from a simple agricultural area into a premier destination that bridges farming heritage with modern tourism expectations.

between our ‘Bread basket’ reputation and the visitor economy,” notes Lloyd. The region now boasts five distinct wine routes, from the celebrated cool-climate Pinot Noirs of the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley to the unique shipwreck-coast vineyards of Cape Agulhas, positioning local wine tourism as a global competitor.

The iconic farm stalls dotting the N2 and R43 corridors have evolved into essential retail hubs, serving as crucial links between local producers and consumers. Meanwhile, authentic farm stays have revolutionised the visitor experience by converting day-trippers into overnight guests, significantly boosting the economic impact per visitor.

The region’s tourism strategy has undergone a fundamental shift in recent years, moving away from simply attracting large numbers of visitors to focusing on high-value travelers who spend more time and money in the area. “Over the past five years, our strategy has shifted from chasing high visitor numbers to attracting ‘high-value’ travellers,” explains Lloyd.

“These visitors explore the rural nodes rather than sticking only to coastal hubs.”

This strategic pivot has delivered tangible benefits for local communities, creating diversified income streams that reduce total reliance on seasonal harvest cycles while building economic resilience through year-round tourism services.

The employment impact of tourism in the Overberg is both immediate and substantial. Lloyd cites compelling statistics from the Western Cape Government’s “Growth for Jobs” strategy: “For every 10 tourists who visit the region, one job is created or sustained. This 1:10 ratio highlights the direct correlation between visitor arrivals and the economic stability of our local communities.”

To ensure these opportunities translate into sustainable careers for residents, tourism officials across the four local municipalities – Overstrand, Theewaterskloof, Cape Agulhas, and Swellendam – have prioritised targeted skills development programmes.

Recent initiatives include a Commu-

nity-based Tourism (CBT) Training pilot programme designed to empower local entrepreneurs to integrate their offerings into the formal tourism value chain. The Marine Guide Programme, developed in partnership with the Western Cape Department of Economic Development and Tourism, has been particularly successful in professionalising coastal guides to meet international standards. “Continuous training efforts ensure that the ‘tourism Rand’ stays within the district, providing residents with the expertise needed to manage our world-class attractions,” Lloyd said.

As the Overberg continues to strengthen its position as a premier destination, the integration of agriculture and tourism remains central to the region’s economic strategy. The focus on value-driven tourism, combined with comprehensive skills development, positions the area for sustainable growth that benefits both visitors and the communities that call this remarkable region home. Through this balanced approach the Overberg is proving that tourism can be both economically powerful and authentically rooted in local character and heritage.

Nuwe Parkforum vol planne

Die Agulhas-nasionale park-forum het verlede Maandag (30Maart) sy eerste amptelike vergadering in die Parkeraad se kantoor in L’Agulhas gehou. ’n Groep vrywilligers het in November verlede jaar ’n werksessie vir benoemings gehou om die Parkforum te laat herleef nadat dit in onbruik verval het en daar vir etlike jare geen forum was nie.

Ross Kettles en Nico Fourie is by die sessie onderskeidelik as voorsitter en ondervoorsitter verkies.

Die volgende Suidpunters dien in die forum, wat op 30Maart in gebruik gestel is: Ross Kettles (voorsitter), Nico Fourie (ondervoorsitter) en Ntakeko Silinda (sekretaresse). Die volgende lede is ook verkies: Bernie Badenhorst, Giel de Kock, May Evelin Bantom, Pierre Massyn, William Eliot, Tina du Plessis en Matilda Bester.

As kurator van Suid-Afrika se mees suidelike nasionale park het die Agulhasnasionale park ’n verantwoordelikheid –nie net vis-à-vis-bewaring nie, maar teenoor die publiek. In hierdie verband tree die forum as ’n skakel tussen die park en die breë gemeenskap op. Die klem val deurentyd op interaksie met mense.

In sy rede het die parkhoof, Dhiraj Nariandas, sy tevredenheid met die Kids in the Park-projek uitgespreek.

Oor wetstoepassing, het hy gesê, is wetstoepasssers by uitstek natuurbewaarders. ’n Algehele duikverbod langs betekenisvolle dele van die kus is onlangs afgekondig en die Agulhas- nasionale park word hier-

deur geraak. Volgens Narianda “moet ’n balans geskep word tussen wetstoepassing en regulatoriese bewustheid.” Wetstoepassing in Suid-Afrika se nasionale parke val onder die omgewingsbestuurs-direktoraat (EMI).

Hy het ook onthul dat die veldwagters van die Agulhas- nasionle park nou opleiding in seemanskap by die vlootbasis in Saldanha otvang. Verkennende gesprekke oor ’n reeks onderwerpe is gehou. Van die belangrikste kwessies wat bespreek is, was besoedeling – by uitstek rommelstrooiery. Nog probleme was die instandhouding van die rondawels in die Agulhas- nasionale park, asook die Ratelrivier en Rietfontein-geboue. Die gedagte van samewerking tussen die forum en die erfenisvereniging om die argitektuur van die laaste twee strukture te bewaar, sal ondersoek word. Die ereveldwageters, onder leiding van William Eliot, vervul ’n belangrike rol in die opknapping van die Ratelrivier en Rietfontein-strukture. Eliot het beklemtoon die ereveldwagters geniet vrywaring van die parkeraad vir hul aktiwiteite in die park. Wat brandbeheer betref, is daar goeie samewerking met die Overberg-distriksmunisipaliteit. Volgens Kettles is die reaksietyd vir die brandweerwa wat van Bredasdorp moet kom vir ’n brand op die Suidpunt slegs 25minute. Daar is ook brandvoertuie by die NSRI se Stasie 30 in Struisbaai, terwyl Suiderstrand sy eie brandwa en ’n span het waarin Kettles, Schalk van der Merwe en Wouter Trollip leiersrolle vervul.

Nuclear plant public meetings

Eskom Holdings SOC Limited has announced public meetings across the Overberg to discuss a proposed nuclear power plant that could be built at Bantamsklip in the Overstrand Local Municipality.

The 5200 MW facility represents one of two potential sites being considered, with Thyspunt in the Eastern Cape as the alternative location.

Three crucial public meetings have been scheduled for Overberg residents in April.

The first took place at the Hermanus Municipal Auditorium on 7 April.

The next meeting at the Dutch Reformed church in Pearly Beach is scheduled for 8 April.

The final Overberg session will be held at the Gansbaai Tourism Information and Conference Centre Hall on 9 April from 18:30 to 20:30.

These meetings aim to present the Draft Scoping Report (DSR) for the proposed Nuclear Power Plant project, which will be available for public review and comment from 1 April 2026.

The project requires Environmental Authorisation and triggers multiple activities under the National Environmental Management Act, necessitating a comprehensive Scoping and Environmental Impact Reporting process.

WSP Group Africa has been appointed as the independent Environmental Assessment Practitioner to manage the environmental assessment process. The company said that community input is crucial for the project's evaluation.

Residents interested in formally registering as stakeholders can do so through multiple channels. personal or other interests in the project.

The proposed nuclear facility would significantly impact the Western Cape’s energy landscape and local communities. The public meetings provide residents with the opportunity to understand the project's scope, raise concerns, and contribute to the environmental assessment process. With South Africa facing ongoing energy challenges, the nuclear proposal has generated considerable interest. However, environmental concerns, safety considerations and community impacts remain key discussion points that will be addressed during the public consultation process.

Stakeholders are encouraged to attend these meetings to stay informed about this significant infrastructure development.

BANTAMSKLIP

On 5 October 2015 Hermanus Times published a story about Bantamsklip that has been excluded as an option of Nuclear-1 X but is still in Eskom’s sight for possible nuclear development (Bantam's no loger an option, Hermanus Times 5 October 2015).

But 10 years later in 2025 Eskom proposes the establishment of a Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) generating up to 5 200 MW, with associated infrastructure, at either Thyspunt near St Francis Bay in the Eastern Cape or Bantamsklip in the Overstrand. The latter is just over 20 km from Gansbaai and 10 km from Dyer Island. History repeats itself.

About 15 years ago approximately 300 concerned residents opposed the building of a nuclear power station. They handed a memorandum to the Overstrand Municipality, saying the municipality had failed to represent their interests by supporting the proposed nuclear power plant (“Nuclear Power Plant near Gansbaai”, Hermanus Times, 18 November 2025).

Die polisie waarsku dat baie mense steeds die slagoffer van aanlyn bedrog word en doen ’n beroep op die gemeenskap om meer waaksaam te wees.

Volgens ’n woordvoerder is hy steeds verbaas oor hoeveel mense nog in die strik van aanlyn bedrog trap.

Die mees algemene soorte bedrog sluit in vooraf-fooi-bedrog; lotery-, gelukstrekkingen kompetisie-swendelary; afspraak- en romanse-swendelary; rekenaarinbraak; aanlyn kopies; bank-, krediet- en aanlyn rekeningbedrog; kleinsake-swendelary; en werk- en selfs indiensnemingsbedrog.

Die polisie pleit by die gemeenskap om aandag te gee aan die volgende wenke:

• Ignoreer dringende versoeke om jou persoonlike inligting te deel – geen bank sal jou vir jou identiteitsnommer of PIN vra nie. Gaan bank toe en doen navraag.

• Bedrieërs skep dikwels ’n gevoel van dringendheid en vrees en beweer byvoorbeeld jou bankrekening sal opgeskort (gevries) word.

• Regte beleggings belowe nie vinnige, risikovrye winste nie. Betroubare maatskappye sal jou nie deur WhatsAppboodskappe of ander sosiale media platforms nader nie. As jy by ’n beleggingsgroep gevoeg word, verlaat of blokkeer die groep.

• Moet nooit vooruit betaal vir aanlyn goedere of ’n voertuig nie, of staatmaak op

Verlede jaar se Kerstyd is iets wat die familie en vriende van die 26-jarige Benetoh Wyngaardt wil vergeet.

Dié gewilde inwoner van Mount Pleasant in Hermanus is op 7 Desember 2025 in die buurt doodgesteek nadat hy glo net meer wou uitvind oor ’n onderonsie wat in die straat gebeur het.

Volgens ’n ooggetuie het hy daardie dag gehoor van ’n bakleiery en wou net meer weet. “Benetoh was altyd die vredemaker en wou net die bakleiery oplos. Min het ons geweet dit sou tot sy dood lei,” het die ooggetuie vertel.

Volgens dié getuie het Benetoh van die toneel af weggestap toe die verdagte hom met ’n mes doodgesteek het.

“Ons almal was so geskok toe dit gebeur. Niemand het dit verwag nie.” Benetoh is op die toneel dood.

Volgens konst. Ndakhe Gwale, ’n woordvoerder vir die Wes-Kaapse polisie, word ’n moordsaak ná die voorval in Sweetpeastraat, Mount Pleasant, ondersoek.

“’n 35-jarige vrou is dieselfde dag nog in hegtenis geneem,” het Gwale bevestig.

Eliziaan Antonie het aanvanklik op 9Desember in die Hermanus-landdroshof weens die moord op Benetoh verskyn. Sy is op 17Desember op borgtog van R1000 vrygelaat. Die saak is toe tot 24 Maart uitgestel.

“Terwyl sy lekker saam met haar familie Kersfees kon vier, het ons gerou,” sê Benetoh se familie.

Sy familie en vriende het verlede Dinsdag (24 Maart) voor die hof met plakkate byeengekom en geregtigheid geëis.

“Benetoh was ’n mensemens wat nie konflik gesoek het nie. Hy het by SupaQuick gewerk en het twee kinders gehad, vir wie hy gelewe het. Ons kry swaar, hy word elke dag gemis,” sê ’n vriendin.

Benetoh se ma, Bonita Wyngaardt, sê haar lewe het ná haar seun se skielike dood in ’n handomkeer verander.

“Dit was so onnodig; ek kom nie oor sy dood nie. Nadat ons weer in die hof was, het dit vir my gevoel of al die ou wonde weer oopgekrap word,” sê Bonita. Sy vertel ook dat sy vir sielkundige hulp gaan om die verlies te verwerk. Antonie se moordsaak is weer uitgestel – dié keer tot 2Junie.

•Intussen het ’n Hermanus-inwoner ’n pleidooi op Facebook geplaas waar sy inwoners nooi om deel van ’n vreedsame optog vandag (8 April) te wees. Sy vra in die video dat mense teen seksuele geweld teen vroue en kinders in Hermanus moet opstaan. Die optog begin om 07:30 by Gateway-sentrum.Die pleidooi volg nadat ’n 42-jarige sakeman van Hermanus verlede jaar in Junie in hegtenis geneem is op drie aanklagte van verkragting, seksuele voorbereiding en blootstelling van ’n minderjarige aan pornografie. “Dit gaan ook oor ander sake wat tans in Hermanus aan die gang is, soos die IT-spesialis wat vir kinderpornografie in die hof verskyn het en die gastehuiseienaar en instrukteur wat weens verkragting aangekla word. Dan praat ons nie eens van al die ander vroue en kinders wat te bang is om ’n klagte by die polisie aan te meld nie.”

Biblioteekweek maak deure oop

Biblioteke is soveel meer as ’n plek waar boeke vir uitgeneem word. Biblioteke is ’n integrale deel van hul gemeenskappe deur die verskeidenheid dienste en programme wat hulle aan die gemeenskap lewer. Dit is juis om dié rede dat Nasionale Biblioteekweek in 2001 deur die Biblioteek- en inligtingvereniging van Suid-Afrika (Liasa) in die lewe geroep is.

Die tema vir Nasionale Biblioteekweek, wat vanjaar van 16 tot 22Maart gevier is, was “Herontdek kennis en ontsluit die toekoms”. Biblioteekweek in die Theewaterskloof (TWK) het reeds drie weke gelede, Vrydag 13Maart, met ’n pret-staptog in Caledon begin. Personeel van al die biblioteke in die TWK- munisipale gebied het aan die staptog, wat by die munisipale kantoor begin en geëindig het, deelgeneem. Baie van die stappers was in prettige bont uitrustings met groot sonhoede geklee. Die TWK-onderburgemeester, Cynthia Clayton, lede van die polisie, wetstoepassers, die brandweer en verskeie ander organisasies het ook aan die staptog deelgeneem.

Alle biblioteke het gedurende biblioteekweek ’n propvol program aangebied. By die Tesselaarsdal-biblioteek het onder andere die brandweer, die polisie en die gesondheidsdepartement praatjies en demonstrasies aangebied.

Die Greyton-biblioteek het as deel van sy program oor Menseregtedag by die Greyton House-skool gepraat, leesprogramme by vroeë kinderontwikkelingsentrums aangebied asook Sassa genooi om die gemeenskap met inligting te help.

Sybil Lee, die hoof van die TWK-biblioteekdienste, sê: “Biblioteekweek was werklik baie geslaag. Alle biblioteke in die TWK-gebied het elke dag vol programme aangebied – eintlik te veel om op te noem. Wat belangrik is, is dat biblioteekweek ook ’n boetevrye week was om mense aan te moedig om hul uitstaande biblioteekboeke terug te bring. Al die biblioteke bied deurgaans kostevrye dienste aan, wat 30-minute-internetgebruik insluit. Personeel staan ouers by met aanlyn skoolaansoeke, help mense met werkloosheidsversekeringsfondsregistrasie en baie meer. Die enigste diens waarvoor gebruikers betaal, is om fotostate te maak.”

Human rights: Building a better society

Human Rights Day was celebrated on Saturday 21 March, with a vibrant gathering held in the Mount Pleasant Business Centre. The event, attended by DA members and local residents, opened with a stirring rendition of the national anthem led by the Zwelihle Young Brothers, setting a tone of unity and reflection.

In his keynote address MP Rikus Badenhorst, the DA’s Constituency Head for Overstrand, urged citizens to live out the promise of the Constitution daily, rather than treating it as a symbolic text revisited once a year.

communities plagued by crime? And are we safeguarding a government based on the will of the people when corruption erodes trust?

“Human rights are not just constitutional ideals, they are practical outcomes,” Badenhorst emphasised. “And those outcomes depend on one thing: whether government works.” He highlighted the Overstrand as an example of consistent, if imperfect, governance, where services are delivered, infrastructure is maintained, finances are responsibly managed and communities are respected.

Badenhorst linked these principles directly to the DA’s Local Government Election 2026 campaign, anchored on four fundamentals: create jobs, fight crime, end corruption and deliver excellent services. He explained that jobs restore dignity, crime prevention en-

sures freedom, clean governance protects rights, and reliable service delivery turns constitutional promises into lived realities. “Human rights are delivered through local government,” he said. “When water runs, refuse is collected, roads are maintained and electricity is reliable, businesses can operate and communities thrive.”

Closing his address Badenhorst reminded councillors and activists that they are more than campaigners. “You are the bridge between the Constitution and the community. Every conversation is an opportunity to show what good governance looks like. Every issue you resolve is an opportunity to restore trust.”

The celebration underscored the DA’s message: Human Rights Day is about delivery, dignity and the daily work of building a better South Africa.

Community heroes honoured

Stanford's most dedicated community servants were celebrated at a special Awards Evening hosted by the Rotary Club of Stanford recently, recognising those who embody the organisation’s motto of “Service Above Self”.

The heartwarming event honoured recipients across three categories: Community Service, Vocational Service and the prestigious Paul Harris Fellow Award. “What a fabulous, fun and rewarding event we had,” said Lana Coates from Stanford Rotary.

“We are very blessed in Stanford to have so many ordinary folk who are always willing to give their time to helping others in the community, at times despite their own personal struggles.”

The Community Service Awards went to six exceptional individuals: Graig Niemand, representatives from Klein River Cheese, Jenny October-Mars, Anchelle Damon, Amanda Phillips and Geraldine Damon. Niemand was recognised as Stanford’s “go-to” person for any emergency.

“Fire, snakes, burst pipes, cats in trees, Graig always has time for a chat and sharing his knowledge,” the citation noted.

Klein River Cheese was honoured for exemplifying “the spirit of Generosity, Sustainability and Empowerment in the Community” while also making “amazing cheese”.

Jenny October-Mars, described as a “mentor extraordinaire”, has managed the Family-in-Focus programme for 15 years with a team of 10 volunteers. She recently took on mentoring 24 young adults in the YearBeyond programme across the Overstrand.

Anchelle Damon was celebrated for her

passion for netball and youth development, running anti-bullying campaigns at schools and serving as Stanford’s PeaceJam Ambassador.

Amanda Phillips and Geraldine Damon, former Community-in-Blue team members now active in CPF and neighbourhood watch, were recognised for their caring work with children living in extreme poverty.

Regina Broenner received the Vocational Service Award for her work as an occupational therapist, using arts and crafts to help children struggling with reading and coordination in both Stanford and Masakhane.

The evening's pinnacle saw Kevin Husk and Ray Tee receive Paul Harris Fellow Awards, Rotary's highest honour, named after the organisation’s founder.

Kevin Husk, known as head of Stanford CPF and Vice-Chair of the municipality's safety forum, was nominated by Ray Tee. Ray Tee, who joined Stanford Rotary in October 2023, after 46 years of Rotary service in Johannesburg, was nominated by Lana Coates and has become instrumental in local soup kitchen operations.

Coates explained: “Our Stanford Rotary team wanted to recognise and honour a small group of very deserving people, with whom we work very closely, who offer not only their time but also kindness, compassion, upliftment and enthusiasm for their fellow community members.”

Acclaimed duo to wow local audience

Music lovers in Hermanus are in for a treat as Overstrand Arts/ Kunste (OAK) prepares to host an extraordinary recital featuring internationally acclaimed violinist Rupert Marshall-Luck and double Sama-winning pianist Peter Cartwright on 12 April.

The duo will present Four by Two, an ambitious programme showcasing works by four diverse composers, which promises to take audiences on a thrilling journey through 20th-century musical expression. The concert will feature pieces by British composer Frederick Delius and South African composer Peter Klatzow, alongside captivating neo-classical works by Russian masters Stravinsky and Prokofiev.

Marshall-Luck, praised by BBC Music Magazine for his “handsome tone and laser-like tuning”, has established himself as a formidable presence on the international stage. The British violinist regularly performs at major festivals and venues worldwide, earning critical acclaim from prestigious publications including Gramophone, The Strad and MusicWeb International

His concert partner, Peter Cartwright, brings impressive South African credentials to the collaboration.

The pianist’s recent album African Bird with flautist Khanyisile Mthetwa swept the 2022 South African Music Awards, taking prizes for Best Classical/Instrumental Album and Best Newcomer home.

He has made South African music a cornerstone of his repertoire, championing works by composers including Andile Khumalo, Jeanne Zaidel-Rudolph, and Carlo Mombelli.

The programme itself tells a fascinating story of cultural diversity and musical evolution. Audiences will experience the gentle, elusive beauty of Delius’ “Third Sonata”, which captures the essence of the English countryside while incorporating jazz influences from the composer’s time in Florida. This will be contrasted with Peter Klatzow’s bold and evocative “Sonata”, which brings distinctly South African soundscapes into dialogue with Western classical traditions.

The Russian contribution comes through Stravinsky’s elegant Suite Italienne , showcasing neo-baroque sophistication, and Prokofiev’s “D major Sonata”, which delivers both rhapsodic lyricism and driving intensity.

The Hermanus recital forms part of an extensive South African tour that will see the duo performing at prestigious venues across the Eastern and Western Cape, including Stellenbosch University’s Endler Prestige Concerts Series and several Johannesburg organisations.

In May they will take their collaboration to the UK for the internationally recognised English Music Festival.

“I am looking forward immensely to this concert for Overstrand Arts in the spectacular Western Cape,” said Marshall-Luck.

“South Africa is a country I always very much enjoy visiting, and I’m thrilled to have this opportunity to present such a wonderful programme of music in such a beautiful setting.”

Caledon teen to Croatia

Sixteen-year-old Machnus Beukes from Caledon is reaching out to the Overberg community for support as he prepares to chase his dancing dreams on the international stage.

The talented teenager, who attends Overberg High School, has been selected to compete at the prestigious 2026 Dance Star World Masters in Porec, Croatia, scheduled for 12-17 May.

This all-genre dance competition will bring approximately 7 000 competitors from roughly 28 countries together, making it one of the most significant international dance events of the year. For Machnus, who trains at Made 2 Move Dance Studio under founder and principal Charlene Ollewagen, this marks his second opportunity to represent South

The *Comprehensive AgriculturalSupport Programme (CASP) was established by the Departmentof Agriculture (DoA) and isimplemented by the WesternCape Departmentof Agriculture through its commodity focused approachinaneffortto extenditsservices to producerswithintheProvince. The strategicgoalofthisprogramme isto createafavourableand supportive agricultural service environment forfarming communitiesincludingsmallholder and commercialland reformproducersas wellasthoseinvolvedin Agri-Processing withinthe Western CapeProvince.

• Women, youth,peoplewithdisabilitiesandfirst-timeapplicantswillbeprioritised.

•Any request forassistanceshould follow theprocessstipulatedbelow. Failure tocomplywiththe requirementswillautomaticallydisqualify yourapplication.

2.APPLICATIONPROCESS

To ensureafasterand a moreefficient service, applicantsare advised to adhereto the process detailed below.

2.1 PRODUCERS: COMMUNITY ANDHOUSEHOLD PROJECTS (NB:Thiscategory of farmerscan apply throughoutthe year).

All these applicantscan applythroughth e closest agriculturaloffice inthe respective districts.

2.2SMALLHOLDERAND COMMERCIALLAND REFORMPRODUCERS

Criteria:

• Prioritywillbegivento theprimary commodity of yourbusiness,

• Evidence oflegalaccess to land(leasedor owned)andlegal water rights must accompany yourbusiness plan,

• Inthecaseofleasedland,theapplicantmust have a leasearrangementofnotless than 9 years and 11monthsand a longerleaseperiodof at least 15 yearswillbe required forlong-termcrops Note that itmay require a notarial deedonthe titledeedofthe farm,

• Where applicable Environmental ImpactAssessments(EIAs) and Record ofDecision(ROD) ofEIA, Water License registrationandAnimalandPlant Improvement Act documentsmust beobtainedbefore the funding application,

• Shouldhave thepotential to create andsustain jobs,

• Enterprisesmust complywiththe latest AgriBEE frameworkandbusinesseswith annual turnover greater than R1millionwillhave to apply for blended funding with LandBank.

• Municipalapprovedinfrastructure plans,signedoffbusiness planand financial statements must besubmitted.

2.3 AGRI-PROCESSINGSUPPORT

Criteria:

• Must have access to adequate productioninputs (raw materials) for the sustainabilityofthe proposed valueadditionand/oragri-processingactivities;

• Proofofland/property ownershiporleaseholdneeds to beprovidedwith the application. Leaseholdsmust take any oneofthe following formsbefore a projectcanbe considered fo r funding;

i. Leaseagreement for5 years (of which at least3 yearsofthelease remain), ii Leaseagreement for3 yearsongovernment-ownedland/property(includingPLAS leases), iii.3-yearlease for thedevelopmentof commonage land(Developmenton Commonagebelonging to theMunicipality Act9 land,and Churchland.

• Productionactivities must take place inthe Western Cape,

• Contributionto foodsecurityand alignmentwiththe strategiesofNationalandProvincial Governments are required,

•The projectmust have the potential to create andsustain jobs,

•The projectmust have the potentialto becomeeconomicallyviableand sustainable

• Business shouldbe involvedin value additionand/or primary processing ofagricultural raw materials.

3.HOW TO APPLY

• Obtain a business plan format from yourlocal office oftheDepartment, or www.elsenburg.com.

• Applicantsare encouraged to make contactwiththenearest extensionoffice for guidance andplanning,

• Submit acompletedbusiness plan to thenearest office withinthe required time frame accompanied by allthesupporting/required compliance ocumentationasper the checklist in a business plan

• Itis acompulsory requirementthat allapplicants be registeredonthe Producer/Farmer Register,

• Once thebusiness planis received, theDepartmentwill confirm receiptinwritingandadvise further onthe process andon-farm verificationof information.

Legacy Martial Arts a force in kickboxing

Students from Legacy Martial Arts Academy in Hermanus delivered an outstanding performance at the recent Kazuko Kickboxing Cup held in Melkbosstrand, securing an impressive 43 medals to cement their status as a force in South African kickboxing.

The championship, which served as a crucial preparation tournament for the upcoming South African National Kickboxing Championships scheduled for 24-29 April in Oudtshoorn, attracted 153 fighters from clubs across four of the country's five districts. Legacy Martial Arts sent 21 fighters to compete in the prestigious event, and their dedication paid dividends with a remarkable medal tally of 20 gold, 18 silver and five bronze medals.

Matao le Roux, Caledon se 17-jarige hoogspringsensasie, het sy ASA-o.18-hoogspringtitel op die ASA-ouderdomsgroepbyeenkoms, wat van 26 tot 28 Maart in Germiston gehou is, suksesvol verdedig asook ’n persoonlike beste prestasie met ’n allemintige sprong van 2.15m behaal. Dit was met sy laaste sprong die afgelope Saterdag (28 Maart) dat Matao sekuur op 2.15m oor die dwarslat geseil het.

“Ek het daai dag geweet ek kán dit doen, want ek het geweet ek gaan dit vir my oupa doen sodat ek hom kan trots maak,” het Matao met Hermanus Times gedeel.

“Ek was baie opgewonde oor my sprong, maar ek weet ek kan nog beter doen en selfs nóg hoër spring. My doelwit is om vanjaar nog oor 2.20m te spring. Ek is wel trots op myself, maar terselfdertyd het ek myself ook verbaas. Maar ja, die lewe kom met baie verbasings.”

Hermanus Times het ook met Matao se afriger, die voormalige Caledonner Hein-

“Om te sê dat ek trots is op Matao se prestasie, is ’n understatement. Matao het die laaste jaar baie goeie vordering getoon en dit in sigself eis baie opoffering. Sy oefenprogram is meer gestruktureerd en spesifiek vir hom aangepas. Hy oefen elke Dinsdag en Donderdag in Stellenbosch. Dit kos opoffering om op dié dae van Caledon na Stellenbosch te reis, maar dit wys dat hy werklik vordering in sy sportloopbaan wil maak,” sê Fortuin.

“Matao het baie talent en potensiaal en hy kan vanjaar nog nog hoër spring. Ons doelwit is om vir die wêreld-o.20-kampioenskap later vanjaar in Oregon, Amerika, te kwalifiseer. Die hoogte van 2.15m wat hy Saterdag gespring het, is gewis ’n kwalifiserende hoogte vir die wêreldkampioenskap, maar die span wat gaan deelneem, word eers op 30 Mei aangekondig.”

Op ’n vraag oor waar en wanneer Matao volgende gaan deelneem, sê Fortuin hulle het besluit om nié aan die SA skolekampioenskap deel te neem nie en dat Matao

eerder aan die SA Senior kampioenskap gaan deelneem, wat van 16 tot 18 April in Stellenbosch beslis word.

“Eerstens wil ek vir die Here dankie sê vir Matao se talent,” sê Maeve Jonkers, Matao se ma. “Dis deur Sy genade dat Matao so goed presteer.

“Hierdie was ’n baie moeilike week vir ons as familie toe ons my pa – Matao se oupa, Martin Philander – verloor het. Matao het egter steeds gegaan en ’n nuwe persoonlike beste van 2.15m gespring. Hy het dit vir sy oupa gedoen. Sy oupa het hom dikwels by byeenkomste ondersteun.

“Matao is een van ’n paar Suid-Afrikaanse atlete wat op 17-jarige ouderdom 2.15m kon haal. Dit is ’n groot prestasie wat my kind behaal het en ek borrel oor van die trots. Ek was skoon in trane ná daai sprong van hom.

“Ek bedank ook sy afrigter. Hy verrig wondere. Dankie ook aan ons familie en weldoeners wat bygedra het sodat hy aan die kampioenskap kon gaan deelneem,” het Jonkers gesê.
