Cruel irony of Women’s month

Women’s Month begins with a cruel irony as the Overberg prepares for multiple unrelated gender-based violence cases to return to court.

Over the coming weeks the Overberg courts will hear cases of a businessman accused of sexual grooming and raping a minor, a local surfer facing rape allegations involving guests in his Air B&B and the high-profile murder case of Jenine Hopley. While unrelated the cases paint a disturbing picture of violence and exploitation being waged against women and children at a time when the country is meant to be reaffirming its commitment to their safety.

SURF INSTRUCTOR

A surf instructor stands accused of raping and sexually assaulting female tourists staying at his lodge. It is alleged the incidents took place over a period of eight years. This came after his arrest on 6 June 2022 with the incidents alleged to have taken place between 2014 and ’22.

Appearing in Hermanus Regional Court on 17 September 2025 his case was postponed to November ’25 so he could appear alongside his co-accused. The co-accused was receiving medical treatment in a separate facility at the time.

The surf instructor was released on R10 000 bail. The case against him came to light when a young female laid a rape charge against him. Before

that, two other women made similar claims, but would not file charges due to living outside the country, and another victim apparently came forward after the 2022 filing.

All the women travelled to South Africa alone and stayed at the instructor’s lodge when the incidents occurred.

is scheduled for 11 August, his case under investigation by the Western Cape Serial and Electronic Crime Investigation Unit (SECI).

LEE-WAYNE KOERT

Lee-Wayne Koert was arrested earlier this year for the rape and murder of his girlfriend, Jenine Hopley.

Following her murder it is alleged he dumped her body at the Caledon Cemetery in May 2026.

According to the National Proscuting Authority (NPA) Koert reported Hopley missing on Friday 1 May, three days after her death on 28 April.

Caledon police registered an enquiry following her disappearance reported by Koert, but the

investigation took a grim turn on 7 May when her body was found at the cemetery. Koert will reappear in the Caledon court on 13 August.

BUSINESSMAN

On 9 June 2025 the then 42-year-old was arrested at his business premises in Hermanus. During the arrest underwear and other sex equipment were reportedly confiscated. Charged with three counts of rape, sexual grooming and exposure of a minor to sexual content the accused appeared in Hermanus Magistrates’ Court on 22 January 2026. He remained in custody in Caledon until his regional-court appearance on 25 February. The accused is expected to appear in court again on 24 August.

IT SPECIALIST

In June of 2025, a well-known IT specialist from Hermanus was arrested for Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM). On 12 Sptember of the same year, the 41-year-old requested that his house arrest per his bail conditions be uplifted to allow him to fulfill his business commitments.

The IT specialist was initially arrested on 5 June 2025 for the possession of CSAM by the Western Cape SECI. The arrest was made following a tip-off from the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) in the United States of America (USA). The accused appeared in court on 13 July. His next court appearance is scheduled for 11 September.

Die museumbestuur het op sy Facebookblad gesê die veiligheid van hul besoekers, personeel en die versameling in die museum is vir hulle baie belangrik en dis

waarom hulle die museum sluit. Die kommentaar op Facebook wys dat enige “spookstorie” steeds mense se verbeelding aangryp en menige Facebookgebruiker het voorgestel dat “spooktoere” daar aangebied moet word. Party is ook van mening dat hulle die ouer inwoners moet vra vir raad.

HORLOSIEMAKER SE MEUBELS ‘SKUIF SELF’

Die Genadendal-museum het op 25 Julie die volgende laat weet: “Ná die oorweldigende reaksie op ons kringtelevisie-beeldmateriaal het museumpersoneel ’n formele assessering van die geaffekteerde tentoonstelling begin. In hierdie stadium is geen skade aan die versameling geïdentifiseer nie en die tentoonstelling sal tydelik gesluit bly terwyl ons ondersoek voortduur.”

Die museum het egter op hul Facebookblad genoem die Art Deco-meubels behoort aan Christopherus en Hendriette Wyngaard. Christopherus was welbekend in Genadendal as ’n horlosiemaker, wat menige inwoner van die Overberg se horlosies al herstel asook versamelstukke gemaak het. Die meubels was deel van hul huishouding en is deur die Johannes-familie aan die museum geskenk.

Die museum is intussen weer vir besoekers oopgestel en is van Maandae tot Donderdae van 08:30-17:00, Vrydae van 08:30-15:30 en Saterdae van 10:00-14:00 oop.

Six arrested in July for a range of crimes

Six suspects were arrested in four separate incidents across Hermanus.

The arrests, involving alleged robbery, house break-ins, trespassing and possession of illegal abalone, were made between 4 and 19 July. The first incident occurred on 4 July when an HPP SRU officer

allegedly witnessed three men robbing another. The police arrested the two detained suspects.

On 10 July an HPP CCTV operator spotted a man walking along the R43 in the early hours before allegedly climbing over the fence of a property where several burglaries had recently occurred. The suspect

was allegedly found with house break-in implements. Two days later, on 12 July, an HPP officer on patrol in Westcliff was approached by a homeowner, who reported that an unknown man had entered her property before fleeing.

After being given a description of the suspect the officer searched the surround-

ing streets and located a man matching it. The suspect was subsequently arrested for trespassing.

On 19 July an HPP CCTV operator spotted two men walking through Westcliff carrying heavy bags. There were a total of 100 abalone in the two bags and the men were arrested by the police.

Ignoring a court order in South Africa is a serious matter that can lead to significant legal consequences, including being held in contempt of court.

Contempt of court refers to any act that disrespects the court’s authority or fails to comply with its orders. In South Africa, contempt can be classified into two main categories: criminal and civil. Criminal contempt involves direct actions that challenge the court’s authority, while civil contempt relates to not following through on court orders in civil cases.

When an individual ignores a court order, the other party can file an application for contempt of court. The South African Constitutional Court has outlined specific

requirements that must be met for a contempt of court application which include: the existence of a valid court order, knowledge of said order, a failure to comply with the order, as well as willfulness and intention.

The penalties for ignoring a court order can range from monetary fines to imprisonment, depending on the severity of the contempt and the discretion of the

court.

Ignoring a court order is not recommended under any circumstances. It not only exacerbates existing legal issues but also undermines the rule of law and the authority of the courts.

Concerned about unleashed dogs, and loads of dog poo

I am a regular visitor to Hermanus and surrounding villages like Onrus and Vermont. We are so- called swallows spending the entire winter, about three to four months in our beautiful area, we love it to be there.

I would like to highlight, also on behalf of several locals, the matter of unleashed dogs either on Cliff Path and/or at David's pool area in Vermont; misconduct or ignor-

ing of local rules. It's displayed on the cliff path and David's pool area very clearly that dogs must be leashed all times within these public access areas.

A minority of locals gathering together every morning and also others simply ignoring above rules completely.

Following observations made during our four month stay nearby, every day walking from

Vermont side via the Cliff Path 15 minutes to the nice David pool to take a refreshing great morning swim.

On our second day when walking on the Cliff Path looking forward to the sea, I stepped into dog poo. I started to count and on the Cliff Path there were 132 spots of dog poo.

Poetry, family and legacy

Poetry, family and legacy filled the enclosed courtyard of CanD Restaurant, when the Ingrid Jonker Poetry Forum 2026 welcomed readers and writers for an evening of remembrance and discovery.

The annual gathering has found a warm new home among art, conversation, good company and shared belonging for everyone. The forum was founded in 2008 by Catherine de Villiers, Anna Jonker’s daughter, as a celebration of Ingrid Jonker’s poetry and a reunion of the Jonker family. Simone, Ingrid’s daughter, joined Welna, Oom Koos Jonker, Tinka Jonker, Catherine and Catherine’s daughter, Ashleigh Herselman, in honouring a legacy. The aim is not only to celebrate Ingrid’s poetry, but also to offer a more intimate presentation: less scandal, more understanding of the Jonker family.

That spirit extended to the open mic. This year’s presenters, and also members of the forum, were Catherine, Patricia Schonstein, Lara Kirsten, Dorian Haarhof and Jacques Coetzee, the 2022 winner of the Ingrid Jonker Poetry Prize for his debut collection, An Illuminated Darkness. The evening carried a warm feeling, with bravery embraced through an impromptu translation of “Waterval van Moss en Son” ©. The programme was built from Ingrid’s poetry, carefully selected to reveal the poet’s softer, happier side - a welcome

counterpoint to familiar, darker narratives. Patricia Schonstein’s introduction touched on Ingrid’s legacy, recalling her first collection, Na die Somer, compiled in 1946 when Ingrid was 13, her mentor DJ Opperman, and her death on 19 July 1965. Ingrid’s complete archive is now housed at Stellenbosch University, brought back to South Africa through the efforts of Simone, Catherine de Villiers and Margarita Stofberg.

The forum plans monthly poetry evenings. Its first book launch will be on 15 August, featuring The Glass Island by Patricia Schonstein, an internationally acclaimedpoet and author.

Putting on a show

When Corné and Neil Wepener-Stemmet took the keys to Searless Stanford on 18 July 2025, they arrived with a business plan, a dream and - by their own admission - no idea what lay ahead.

One year on, the venture has become a cornerstone of village life: a place where friends gather for a casual drink, families reconnect over dinner and audiences settle in for quality theatre without ever leaving their table.

On Saturday evening, the couple marked their first anniversary with an intimate celebratio for friends, clients and staff. Guests enjoyed food and wine alongside a cabaret performance by Gerard van Rooyen of Perspectief.

Mienke Ehlers - known to many as Frankie from the TV series Suidooster - made a special appearance, praising Searless for its contribution to the arts and the wider Stanford community and wishing the couple well.

The venue has drawn all walks of life through its doors: a woman pausing for a glass of wine while walking her dog, a CEO grabbing a Thursday burger takeaway, couples on date nights.

Under Corné and Neil's stewardship,

Searless has grown beyond dining to host regular live events, open mic nights, quizzes and game evenings. All while making its famous stoep available for local school fundraisers.

"We're not a theatre that serves food," the couple say. "We're a restaurant that loves putting on a show."

The formula is simple - a meal with friends, a drink from the bar then an evening of entertainment at the same table. Dinner and a show, Stanford style.

Searless Restaurant Theatre & Bar is open Monday to Wednesday from 16:00, Thursdays and Fridays from 16:00 (with breakfast and lunch from 09:00 on Thursdays), Saturdays from 09:00 and Sundays from 10:00 - 15:00.

Die Kalfiefees het oor die jare ’n besonderse plek in die hart van Hermanus ingeneem.

Wat meer as ’n kwarteeu gelede as ’n beskeie toneelfees begin het, het gegroei tot ’n geliefde kulturele hoogtepunt wat jaar ná jaar akteurs, kunstenaars, skrywers, musikante en toegewyde gehore na dié kusdorp lok.

Die naam “Kalfiefees” dra iets van Hermanus se eie karakter. Soos die walviskalfies wat elke winter saam met hul ma’s in Walkerbaai verskyn, bring die fees elke jaar nuwe energie, vars stemme en kreatiewe samewerking. Die fees het elke jaar ’n gevoel van afwagting, wonder en opwinding: Wat kom hierdie jaar Kalfiefees toe?

Uit die staanspoor was die fees anders as die groot nasionale kunstefeeste. Dit het ’n intieme dorpsgevoel behou – vertonings in kerksale, restaurante en galerye; boekbesprekings in die biblioteek; gesprekke wat op die sypaadjie of oor ’n glasie wyn voortgaan. Hierdie toeganklikheid het die fees sy unieke sjarme gegee – ’n plek waar kuns nie net aangebied word nie, maar beleef en gedeel word.

Die fees het feitlik geen groot borge nie – net ’n span vrywilligers wat elke agtereenvolgende jaar vir die gemeenskap en die kunste van

waarde wil wees. Die program het oor die jare uitgebrei om ’n breë spektrum kunsvorme te bevat, soos ernstige teater, musiek, komedie, literêre gesprekke en visuele kuns. Tog het die kern dieselfde gebly – dit is steeds ’n viering van kreatiwiteit binne ’n gemeenskap wat die kunste met trots ondersteun.

Die Kalfiefees – nou in sy 26ste jaar – is die bewys van wat moontlik is wanneer kuns en ’n gemeenskap saam groei. Ons is diep dankbaar vir die geskiedenis van die Kalfiefees en sien met blink oë uit na die volgende 25 jaar. Soveel komiteelede het al diep spore oor die jare getrap. Die komitee het vanjaar Onrus en in die besonder ook die De Wetsaal, waar die Kalfiefees vir soveel jare sy kern gehad het, vereer. Almal weet egter hierdie is nie net ’n fees nie, maar ’n voortgesette verhaal, met vele interessante stories en mense. Die geliefde Kalfiefees is ’n fees wat elke jaar nuwe hoofstukke tot Hermanus se kulturele erfenis byvoeg – klein met ’n groot gees en kosbare, lojale feesflerries wat dit jaarliks bywoon. Dis die fees om by te wees!

Komitee vat hande om omgeegemeenskap te skep

Vir die Kalfiefees-komitee is gemeenskapsbetrokkenheid van kardinale belang.

Die komitee het hierdie jaar besluit om ’n skoner, sterker omgeegemeenskap te skep.

The Creative Space se vernuwende Swop Shop- en herwinningsprojek is op 25 Junie by Hawston Sekondêr van stapel gestuur.

Die projek moedig inwoners aan om herwinbare materiaal te versamel en dit vir punte te verruil. Die punte kan dan gebruik word om noodsaaklike skool- en huishoudelike produkte aan te skaf.

Die projek is deur die plaaslike inwoners onder leiding van Vivienne Mitchley bedryf. Só bevorder die inisiatief werkskepping, omgewingsverantwoordelikheid, gemeenskapsontwikkeling, vaardigheidsontwikkeling en menswaardigheid.

Die Kalfiefees sal deur hierdie samewerkingsooreenkoms volgehoue ondersteuning bied deur finansiële bydraes, skenking van goedere, hulp met geldinsameling en bewusmakingsveldtogte om die langtermynvolhoubaarheid en groei van die projek te help verseker.

Die Kalfiefeeskomitee het hande gevat met The Creative Space om ’n verskil in die gemeenskap te maak.

“Die Kalfiefees glo dat kuns, kultuur en gemeenskapsontwikkeling hand aan hand gaan,” sê Hester Finberg, die feesdirekteur. “Hierdie vennootskap stel ons in staat om ’n betekenisvolle bydrae te lewer tot ’n projek wat nie net die omgewing beskerm nie, maar ook geleenthede skep en praktiese ondersteuning bied aan leerders en gesinne wat dit nodig het. Wat kan jy herwin?

Youth to ignite Kalfiefees

For four days, young people from Hawston, Gansbaai, Hermanus and Zwelihle came together for a youth creativity workshop that was nothing short of a rollercoaster ride.

It was a meeting of energy, feelings, ideas, beats, melodies, moves and faces, with plenty of fun and giggles along the way. Across the Overstrand, young voices found a place to be heard, celebrated and taken seriously. The workshop was also about braveness: pushing the limits, expanding ideas and exploring new ways of doing things. Participants were encouraged to tell stories, express themselves, be true and honest, and discover what can happen when

imagination is given room to lead. Every exercise opened another door, whether through a rhythm, a lyric, a movement or a shared story. The result was a growing sense of trust and pride among the young creatives. What began as four communities meeting in one creative space has become a vibrant collective, ready to share everything they have made and discovered at the Kalfiefees. Their one-night-only performance, OnseBlues, promises an evening where music, movement and honest expression come together in a celebration of Overstrand youth.

Celebrating the day with dignity, kindness

"What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others." These are the words of Nelson Mandela, whose legacy continues to inspire hope, unity and nourishing dignity.

From inspiring young people and little children through a fun day, to entertaining locals with rythmic drums and serving warm meals to over 300 locals in need; the Overberg honoured Mandela Day with humility and kindness.

On Friday 17 July, the Hermanus Rainbow Trust hosted a day where over 260 children learnt the importance of Ubuntu. Supported by Bouchard Finlayson, the young people painted the walls of Eluncedweni centre in Zwelihle.

"Bouchard and Finlayson - a wine farmsponsored the event by buying fruits, refreshments and provided a meal which comprised of samp and beans," says Bathandile Siwendele, one of the faces of Eluncedweni centre. "Mandela is said to have loved food."

from the Department of Education were also in attendance. Some of the children's parents were in attendance as well.

"My hope is that when we leave, we won't simply look back at what we accomplished," says Claire Reitz, who heads the people and

culture department at Bouchard Finlayson.

"We'll remember the people and children we met. The conversations we shared."

Meanwhile, in Hermanus, Volmoed Youth drummers entertained locals through music and song for 67 minutes. Locals were invited

Gift of hope for Overberg needy

Sometimes the greatest investment isn't measured in rands and cents. Standard Bank Hermanus is helping to keep vulnerable children and adults warm, fed and hopeful through support for two local organisations serving the greater Overberg community.

On Friday 10 July, the local Standard Bank donated various food items and blankets to the childcare centre in Sandbaai and the Hermanus Night Shelter, respectively.

The initiative forms part of Standard Bank's broader purpose and theme: "Africa is our home, we drive her growth". Under this theme, community invovement and corporate responsibility sits at the heart of the bank's mission to create lasting socio-economic change across the continent.

Rather than waiting for requests, the bank "becomes aware of its clients' needs through direct consultations, client feedback and data-driven insights", said Amber Burgess. Burgess is the bank's customer liaison officer.

"We went to go visit the particular organisations and identified the different needs and arranged to support the two local organisations [with] children and adults involved," she said.

The support is aimed at addressing some of the most immediate challenges facing vulnerable residents by helping to provid warm clothing, meals and essential items. More importantly, the branch hopes the gesture will inspire optimism among those who need it most.

"We are hopefully creating a positive impact and helping the children

and adults to keep warm. [We are also] helping to feed them and giving them hope for a better future and to always remain positive," the branch said.

While many corporate social investment programmes are linked to long-term partnerships, the local Standard bank said this initiative was driven purely by the desire to give back.

"For us, it is not about business and getting new business. But instead, [it is] about giving back to the community and helping each other," said distribution manager, Jennie Jordaan.

The bank also believes investing in early childhood development and local non-profit organisations strengthens communities and supports long-term economic growth.

The branch added that supporting community organisations is not simply charity, but an investment in the local economy.

An economy that builds resilience, improves wellbeing and creates a stronger, more connected Overberg community.

"After an incredible conversation with the manager of the Windsor Hotel, she offered to find carpets and furniture for the shelter and also pledged to tell tour groups about [the Volmoed Youth Leadership Training Programme]," says Edwin Arrison, the director of the programme.

Greater Hermanus Reconstruction and Development (RDP) Forum and volunteers served warm soup and bread to around 300 people at the RDP Centre in Zwelihle.

The initiative, made possible through donations from the public, the Red Cross and Van Blommestein, the Forum will soon launch skills training programmes. This is according to Vicki Olwage of Greater Hermanus RDP forum. This will be a partnership with Volmoed and "will enable participants to gain future employment".

Valid Dreamers Foundation and Miss Hermanus donated clothes to the Hermanus Night Shelter, embodying Ubuntu and kindness.

Die vrouegroep Community of Change, onder leiding van Christine Lenderts, het die gemeenskap bymekaargebring om die dorp skoon te maak. Die bymekaarkomplek was voor Carica in Oostergloed, waar vrywilligers vroeg die oggend vergader het.

Verskeie gebiede in die dorp is uitgewys en groepe is aangewys om elke gedeelte deeglik skoon te maak. Jonk en oud het saamgespan om

rommel op te tel en sodoende ’n positiewe bydrae tot hul dorp te lewer. Die projek het ook die steun van die Theewaterskloof-munisipaliteit ontvang. Simankele Damesi, a boxer from the Overstrand Whale Boxing Club (OWBC) in Zwelihle represented South Africa at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

For the young fighter, stepping into the ring at one of the world's biggest sporting events was a landmark moment and a chance to carry Hermanus's name onto the international stage. Damesi competed in the Men's 65kg welterweight division (Round of 32). His first and only bout was on 24 July, when he faced Ziggy Agathe of Mauritius. The contest was stopped by the referee (RSC-I) because of an injury - a cut above Damesi's eye - just eight seconds into the second round.

The ringside doctor advised the referee to stop the contest after assessing the cut. All five judges had scored the first

round 10-9 in favour of Agathe, making it a difficult start for Damesi before the injury brought his Commonwealth Games campaign to an early close. Although the result was not the one he had hoped for, his participation itself is a significant achievement.

SANABO CHAMP

Damesi is coached by his uncle, Mzi Damesi, the founder and head coach of the OWBC, who accompanied him to Glasgow. Based in Zwelihle the club is supported by the EMS Foundation and continues to give young people in the community an opportunity to develop through boxing. Damesi's journey to the Commonwealth Games reflects the commitment

of his coach, club and supporters.Damesi previously won a bronze medal at the Sanabo Championships, adding to a record that points to his promise in the sport. Despite the disappointing outcome in Glasgow, it was a tremendous achievement for a young boxer from Hermanus to appear on the world stage at the Commonwealth Games. The community of Hermanus and the Overstrand is proud of Damesi's achievement and his contribution to the sport. His appearance in Glasgow is an important chapter in his boxing journey and an inspiration to other young athletes in the region.

The Hermanus Darts Association has made history with its first appearance at the SA Darts National Championship, marking an important milestone for the local sporting community and for darts in Hermanus.

Competing at national level for the first time, the association’s ladies’ team produced an outstanding performance to finish fourth in their division.

"Reaching the latter stages of a national championship on a debut is a remarkable achievement and reflects the quality,

commitment and determination within the team, said Louis Pieters of the Hermanus Darts Association. "The men’s team also represented Hermanus with distinction, securing sixth place in their division.

Both teams can be proud of their results."

A first-time appearance at nationals brings its own challenges, and their performances show that the association has the ability to compete confidently on a bigger stage.
