Police officers attacked

Pandemonium erupts at shebeen closure

Police officers were recently attacked by community members during a shutdown operation that turned violent in Grabouw. One officer sustained a head injury and a case of public violence and assault was opened.

The attack occurred when the Caledon public order police were closing an illegal establishment in the Covid informal settlement on Sunday 24 May. This according to an official police source. The incident is reported to have taken place at 16:35. “The officers asked the people [at the shebeen] to leave and as they split in separate directions they started throwing stones and bottles at the police, leading to one of them getting hurt on the head,” the source said in reply to a Hermanus Times enquiry. The injured officer subsequently received medical treatment.

More establishments were closed down and owners were arrested and liquor licences were confiscated.

According to an official Facebook statement by the Grabouw Police Station commander, Col Winston Coetzee, police officers were carrying out their duties in service of the law and in protection of the community when they were attacked. It is asserted that the perpetrators were acting unlawfully and protecting the business interests of the shebeen owners.

“Such acts of violence against law-enforcement officers are unacceptable, cowardly and a direct attack on the authority of the state and the rule of law,” the official response said.

Behind the uniform and before the law police officers are “human first”. “They are fathers and mothers and belong to a family,” Coetzee said. “They are not things that you can willingly throw objects at.”

He said the Grabouw police remain committed to reinforce operations against illegal liquor establishments in the area as well as bringing all criminal activities associated with them to justice, in accordance with the law.

“We will not be intimidated or deterred by criminal elements seeking to undermine policing efforts. Any attack on police officials will be investigated and those responsible will face the full might of the law.”

Meanwhile, he has recognised and commended the “bravery, professionalism and dedication of our members who continue to place their lives at risk in the fight against crime.”

Said the official response: “We further call on the community to support the fight against crime by reporting illegal liquor trading and criminal activities and by working together with the police to restore peace and safety in our areas.”

A public violence and attack on police case docket was opened and is currently on record.

Overstrand cleanest again

In a resounding demonstration of environmental leadership and service-delivery excellence, the Western Cape Government walked away with eight out of 10 awards at the prestigious National Waste Management Awards, the Overstrand named The Cleanest Municipality in the Province.

This year’s conference was organised on the theme “Waste infrastructure investment towards equitable sustainable waste services”.

Western Cape Minister for Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, Anton Bredell, praised those behind the achievement. “The Western Cape’s performance is a testament to the hard work and commitment of our municipalities, officials and stakeholders who continue to drive excellence in waste management and environmental protection.”

He added that the awards reflect the Western Cape Government’s continued commitment to building cleaner, greener and more sustainable communities.

The Mayor, Archie Klaas, was quick to acknowledge the people behind the honour. He noted a massive amount of hard work occurred behind the scenes, congratulating Craig Mitchell and the solid waste teams across Hangklip-Kleinmond, Greater Hermanus, Stanford and Greater Gansbaai.

Mitchell, Overstrand’s Senior Engineer for Waste Management, has been at the heart of the municipality’s consistent excellence. His team’s work spans the full breadth of the Overstrand coastline ensuring that residents and visitors alike enjoy clean, well-managed towns and natural spaces. This recognition builds on a long track record of award-winning performance. Overstrand previously claimed top spot in the Western Cape’s Municipal Waste Management Recognition Programme in 2022 and again in 2024, while consistently placing in the top three in intervening years.

Another Overberg success story came from the Swellendam Municipality, whose Bontebok Landfill Site was recognised as the most improved local municipal landfill site in South Africa in terms of operation and management. It is a significant achievement that highlights the impact of sustained investment and dedication at grassroots level.

Following widespread calls from concerned residents, conservation groups, and environmental activists, the public review period for the proposed Eskom Nuclear Power Plant at Bantamsklip near Pearly Beach has been extended once again.

The new deadline for public comments on the Draft Environmental Scoping Report (DSR) is now Friday 29 May – but critics warn that even this extended window is far too short for a project of this magnitude.

IT IS ABOUT BANTAMSKLIP

“At stake is one of the most consequential environmental decisions South Africa has faced in decades: whether to approve the construction of a massive 5 200-megawatt nuclear power station on one of the most ecologically sensitive coastlines in the world. And for the community of the Overberg that decision could alter their landscape, their livelihoods, and their natural heritage forever,” said a conservationist and activist.

The planned project, a nuclear power station with a capacity of up to 5 200 MW – making it one of the largest nuclear facilities ever planned on African soil, cannot be taken lightly and according to activists and nature conservationists it is about more than just the nuclear power plant, it is about Bantamsklip.

UNESCO-RECOGNISED BIODIVERSITY HOTSPOT

“Bantamsklip is no ordinary stretch of coastline. It is nestled within the worldwide recognised Cape Floristic Region — one of only six floral kingdoms on earth and a Unesco-recognised biodiversity hotspot — the Bantamsklip property is an ecological treasure chest. It is surrounded by a network of nature reserves and contains 22 species listed in South Africa’s Red Data Book of endangered plants, six of which are found nowhere else on the planet. Let that sink in: six plant species that exist only here, on this farm, on this coastline,” the conservationist said.

But it is not just the flora. The coastline at Bantamsklip teems with life above and below the waterline. The cold, nutrient-rich Benguela Current runs along this stretch of coast, sustaining extraordinary biodiversity: African Penguins, the Southern Right Whales, the Cape Fur Seals, Great White Sharks, Dolphins, Abalone and the kelp forests that function as nurseries for countless fish species.

According to him nuclear power plants require enormous volumes of seawater for cooling. “The discharge of thermally heated water back into the ocean – a pro-

cess called “thermal pollution” – risks fundamentally altering ocean temperatures, disrupting the kelp forests and the food webs that depend on them.”

DEADLINE 29 MAY

The Draft Environmental Scoping Report – spanning an overwhelming 2 700 pages – was released for public comment on 1 April. The original deadline of 5 May has now been extended again to 29 May, following mounting public pressure from communities who argued they simply did not have enough time to process such a voluminous and complex document.

All comments must be submitted to WSP by close of business on 29 May.

The first event will be a family-friendly morning walk this Saturday (30 May) in the Pearly Beach-Bantamsklip area, with the aim of raising awareness of just how beautiful, pristine, and unique this stretch of coastline truly is. Due to tidal and time constraints, the walk will not extend all the way to Bantamsklip itself, but will take place along a scenic, unspoilt section of the route on the way to Bantamsklip.

Jason Stonehewer of the Perlemoen Trail knows this area and its ecosystem like the back of his hand. Because this stretch of coastline is very close to his heart, he has offered to lead the walk free of charge and share his insights about this remarkable and sensitive coastal area where Eskom now wants to establish a nuclear power station.

Meet at 08:30 at Pearly Beach resort. The walk will be led by Jason Stonehewer (Perlemoen Trail). Costs R150 per person (children under 18 free). Abalone seized in W-Cape

More than 500 kilograms of abalone with an estimated street value of approximately R900 000 has been seized in two operations in the Western Cape, leading to multiple arrests.

The operations, conducted on 21 May and 22 May, resulted in the seizure of 8 792 units of abalone. In the first operation, arrests were made near Partridge Point in Simon’s Town and 106 units of abalone were seized.

In the second operation, conducted in collaboration between the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), Cape Nature and Provincial Traffic, a suspected vehicle transporting illegally harvested abalone was intercepted near Grabouw and was pursued to Nomzamo near Gordon’s Bay.

The driver was arrested and a total of 8 686 units of abalone were seized. Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment Willie Aucamp commended the rapid response and collaboration between DFFE, SANParks Sea Rangers and K9 units, Cape Nature, City of Cape Town and Provincial Traffic that led to the arrests and seizures, while warning that poaching and other crimes against South Africa’s wildlife will not be toler-

ated.“I issue a stern warning to poachers and anyone contemplating poaching: zero tolerance will be shown for these criminal activities,” said Aucamp. “The vehicles and vessels you use to poach marine resources will be seized, and you will face the full might of the law. Poachers will find no safe harbour here.”

The suspects are expected to face charges relating to illegal harvesting of marine resources, possession of illegally obtained abalone and other related offences.Environmental crime can be reported on 0800 205 005.

Tips for selling property from a deceased estate

When someone passes away, the executor appointed by the Master of the High Court has the responsibility to manage the estate, which may include selling immovable property. This can only be done once Letters of Executorship have been issued. Without them, any agreement of sale is invalid.

Human bones in storm cleanup

Human remains were discovered during a cleanup operation in an informal settlement in Hermanus after the recent harsh storms.

The human remains believed to be linked to the Khoi or San people were uncovered in the Dubai informal settlement in Hermanus, turning what began as a recovery operation into a startling archaeological and police discovery.

The remains were discovered during a cleanup operation organised by the Land Party.

The resident of the property on which they were discovered is believed to have been repairing his wendy house after it was affected by the recent floods.

This is according to Onke Dabile, a member of the Land Party.

The remains were discovered at 11:48 on Thursday next to the sewage dams in the area.

In an official statement released on Facebook by the Land Party on Thursday 21 May, upon being made aware of the remains, its leadership immediately alerted the police who went to the scene with a district surgeon.

Law officials affirmed that it is not a criminal matter and that the bones are very old.

Thereafter, contact was made with the heritage department in Cape Town and the bones were collected and handed in, according to law officials. They will be collected by the heritage department.

The people at the scene of the discovery reacted with shock and those around the area have been negatively impacted by it, according to Dabile.

The exact age and details of the remains are currently unknown.

However, members of the party say that they were not particularly surprised by the discovery as they believe that the remains could be linked to one of the locals who was reported missing but was never found 20 plus years ago.

Meanwhile, Facebook users questioned the surety of police in concluding that the remains belonged to a member of the Khoi or San community.

One user alleged that the remains could belong to community members who either went missing or died 20 plus years ago, but their remains could not be found at the time.

The cleanup began immediately following the devastating storms between 10 and 12 May where many houses were left flooded or destroyed.

The Khoi/San community in Knoflokskraal could not provide comment by the time of publication.

Hermanus investment boost

A new apartment development is set to reshape Hermanus’ residential landscape, with the official opening of The Mira having taken place on Thursday, 21 May.

The event brought together investors, architects, engineers, and members of the development and construction teams at the corner of Marine Drive, where Deputy Mayor Elnora Gillion welcomed the project as a positive symbol of economic and infrastructural growth for the town.

Located at 39 Marine Drive, The Mira is the newest residential development in Hermanus and is expected to make a meaningful contribution to the local economy.

Hermanus Times attended the event, where David Sedgwick, Managing Director of Horizon Capital, addressed guests and reflected on the site's significance. He noted that the land on which The Mira now stands had remained vacant for close to two decades.

“That’s twenty years of empty ground in one of the most prominent positions in Hermanus. A piece of land waiting for the right vision to be unlocked,” he said.

Sedgwick added that he and his investors had always believed the vacant deserved to become more than just another building.

“We believed it deserved to become a gateway. A gateway connecting the CBD to Westcliff. A gateway connecting modernity to heritage. And a gateway connecting the sea to the land. That is the idea that stood at the heart of The Mira.”

From the municipality’s perspective, developments of this nature can have an immediate and positive impact on surrounding areas, particularly where vacant land may otherwise become vulnerable to neglect or misuse.

“We have to deal with a lot of illegal dumping,” Gillion said, “and when a site

is empty, it immediately gets invaded with either vagrants or illegal dumping,” Gillion added.

Beyond addressing the challenges often associated with vacant land, Gillion highlighted that developments such as The Mira also create long-term economic value for the municipality through rates and taxes.

“New families moving into our area will now contribute to the local economy. So, it's a great infrastructure upgrade to the area,” she said.

She added that the development is also expected to support job creation in the area, as the building will require ongoing maintenance and operational support, creating opportunities for local employment.

According to Gillion, municipal investment in infrastructure plays an important role in enabling private developers to bring high-quality residential projects such as The Mira to the area.

The Mira comprises 21 apartments, with residents able to move in from 1 April.

Die storms wat die Overberg onlangs getref het, het menige mens gestrand gelaat, met paaie wat gesluit is. Ander was in die donker gehul toe dorpe vir dae sonder elektrisiteit was. Sommige is selfs haweloos nadat die stormwinde baie mense dakloos gelaat het.

Dit is nie net die mense wat onder die storms deurgeloop het nie – diere het ook in die slag gebly.

Die rehabilitasiespan van die African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary onder

leiding van Xolani Lawu en dr. Annamarie Robberts het behoorlik hul hande volgehad om see- en skulpdiere te red. Volgens Lawu is hulle oorval deur bekommerde inwoners wat hulle oor diere gekontak het.

“ ’n Vrou van Stanford het my gekontak oor ’n albatros wat sy op ’n plaas buite Stanford opgemerk het. Die arme dier was letterlik windverwaaid en kon nie vlieg nie. ’n Ander inwoner het ons ook gebel oor ’n skua wat ernstige beserings opgedoen het,” vertel Lawu.

Lawu sê die albatros het gelukkig geen beserings opgedoen nie, maar die skua het ’n ernstige hou aan sy kop gehad en sy snawel is beskadig.

“Die goeie nuus is dat albei hierdie geveerde besoekers, wat duisende kilometers aflê om die mees suidelike punt van Afrika te bereik, ten volle gaan herstel. Ons het hulle onder infrarooi ligte gesit, ’n bietjie liefde en aandag gegee en met die regte medikasie en voeding was hulle gou weer op die been.”

Die behandeling van die diere gaan met risiko’s gepaard. Lawu sê ’n mens moet versigtig wees om die pragtige albatros te behandel. “Albatrosse voed op vis, inkvis en ander skaaldiere en hy kan maklik jou vinger vir ’n inkvis aansien.”

Die swartrugalbatros is ’n unieke voëlspesie. Volgens navorsing is daar net 1,2 miljoen van dié voëls oor. “Die getal swartrugalbatrosse neem in baie plekke

af. Dit kan daartoe lei dat dié diere ook bedreig word.”

Die spanne by Marine Dynamics en die Dyer Island Conservation Trust was opgewonde om hierdie twee spesiale pasiënte te behandel en kan nie wag om hulle vry te laat nie.

In ’n ander reddingspoging is die rehabilitasiespan ook ingelig van ’n gestrande seeskilpad. Gelukkig werk die African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary nou saam met die Two Oceans Aquarium Turtle Rescue en is die seeskilpad veilig na die Two Oceans Aquarium vervoer waar hy gerehabiliteer sal word voor hy weer vrygelaat word.

“Mense word aangemoedig om dadelik die reddingsnoodlyn by 083 300 1663 te skakel as hulle op ’n gestrande seeskilpad afkom. Of skakel 072 598 7117 as julle ander seediere sien wat hulp nodig het,” vra Lawu.

Donasies vir diere dringend gevra

“Ek sal doodgaan vir diere,” vertel Shirley Surridge van Grabouw.

Shirley is passievol oor dit wat sy doen en as sy jou vertel oor die nood daar buite, dan rol die trane. Sy is al 10 jaar betrokke by die Grabouw Animal Welfare (Gaws) en soos sy dit stel, word dit nie makliker nie.

Tydens haar onderhoud met Hermanus Times rol die trane terwyl sy in die Gaws-bakkie in een van die woonbuurte sit.

“Ek sit hier en kyk hoe honger ’n klein hondjie is. Ek besef die hondjie is nie net honger nie, maar het ook dringend ontwurmingsmiddel nodig. My hande is afgekap, want ons het nie genoeg geld om in al die behoeftes van die diere te voorsien nie,” vertel sy.

Sy vertel dat hulle gereeld deur die woonbuurte ry en selfs skuiling vir die diere aanbied.

“Tydens die storms was dit erg, diere wat in die nat en koue weer buite vasgemaak is. Gelukkig het ons ingespring en dit reggestel. Ons het ook beskutting en komberse vir die diere uitgedeel.”

Ná die onlangse vloede is die nood nog groter en benodig

hulle dringend kos vir al die diere. “Om nie eens van ons veeartsrekening te praat nie.

Wat die mense nie besef nie, is dat ons daar is vir al die diere, nie net honde en katte nie. Ek kom nou net van volstruise en perde af wat ons hulp nodig het en ons het ook onlangs ’n uil gehelp wat raakgery is. Ons passie is diere en wanneer ’n dier swaarkry, kry ons swaar.”

Die inwoners is al gewoond aan die wit bakkie wat deur die woonbuurte ry en kos vir die diere uitdeel. “Afgesien van die diere wat ons gereeld voer, ontwurmingsmiddel gee asook was en dip, hou ons ook gereeld sterilisasie-uitreike. Ons is weer die week in Knoflokskraal om die diere daar te steriliseer.”

Wat haar seker die meeste tref, is dat die nood net groter en groter word. “Die winter is nou hier, die diere het hulp nodig en ons het ’n tekort aan geld. Ek hoop iemand sien en lees ons nood raak sodat ons ’n verskil kan maak vir die diere daar buite.”

Soos Shirley dit stel, kan Gaws nie funksioneer sonder hulp van die inwoners of sakeondernemings nie. “Ons is ’n

organisasie sonder winsbejag en is geheel en al afhanklik van die inwoners se goedhartigheid. Ons het ’n verskriklik wye gebied om te dek en die nood is baie groot.”

Tans het Gaws ’n veeartsrekening van meer as R40 000 wat dringend aandag met kry en Shirley vertel dat hulle letterlik met hul hande in hul hare sit.

“Ons het nie eens genoeg geld om kos vir die diere te koop nie. Gelukkig is daar instansies soos Grabouw Spar wat ’n trollie vir ons by die ingang van hul winkel het waar mense kos vir die diere kan skenk. Ons vra die inwoners se hulp om ons deur die moeilike tyd te kry. Enigiets is welkom.

“Dis nou winter en nie net eet die diere meer nie, maar dit is koud daar buite en dit is skokkend om te sien hoeveel diere in die koue en reën buite slaap,” vertel sy.

Foundation plants seeds of

Khalabhash of Hope Foundation is fast-growing as champions for the environment, leading young people in nature conservation. Through educational and skill-focused initiatives, the foundation is teaching youth about the importance and impact of nature.

The youth-centered Foundation recently hosted a heartwarming outreach programme at Lukhanyo Primary School in Zwelihle; teaching learners the importance of nature conservation through reading and community clean-up initiatives.

The initiative was an effort to help rebuild the library in the community and was supported by various individuals and organisations.

The library initially burned down due to socio-economic issues. The current main goal for the organisation is to rebuild the library to provide a place where people of all ages within the community can enrich their lives and empower themselves through a shared space such as a library.

The initiatives began at the start of this year and showcases conservation within the Overstrand community.

“[We] are showcasing nature conservation in our township,” said Zama

Pikilana, one of the members of the Foundation. “We believe in the power of education, community and hope.”

Khalabhash of Hope works with young people between the ages of 8 and 16.

“We take the young people to nature reserves, etc, to explore with them,” Pikilana said.

He added that “the plan is to work with youth across the Overstrand”, and not just the youth in Zwelihle.

Although the organisation hosted a successful library outreach event and a clean-up initiative, there is still a long way to go to make the goal of building a new library a reality.

“We are also calling for support from non-governmental organisations and government organisations to help us on [this] big initiative we are currently working on,” said Pikilana in correspondence with Hermanus Times. “The support can be anything that is suitable for the building of a library.”

Net soos verlede jaar het Paul die geleentheid gekry om in April saam met sy pa Kaapstad-stadion toe te gaan waar die Stormers die Glasgow Warriors aangepak het. As deel van die Vodacom Verenigde Rugbykampioenskap (URC) se Kids Round het hy weer agter die kamera ingeskuif en die mooiste aksiefoto’s geneem.

Die Diaz-museum in Mosselbaai asook die mosaïektonnel by Pinnacle Point is op dag een besoek, met ’n besoek aan die krokodilplaas in Oudtshoorn op die tweede dag. I have been in Cape Town for the past four years. I stayed with my son in Millerton for four months until he was retrenched. Since then we have been living on the street and shelters. We presently live in Hermanus shelter. We appeal for your help about winter clothes and especially raincoats and gumboots.

The shelter in unable to help us and presently we do not have any warm clothes including jackets. My son is a extra-large

Welgedaan Computer Hut, hierdie mooi gebaar het my weer hoop vir die toekoms en ons jeug gegee. Doen so voort!

RDP soup kitchen needs your help

Following the severe storm that destructively swept through the Overstrand on 11 May leaving many residents without electricity and facing difficult conditions, the 2026 RDP Winter Soup Kitchen season began earlier than planned in response to the urgent community need.

What began as an emergency response became a powerful example of neighbours helping neighbours, with volunteers, donors and community members working together to support those affected by the storm.

Young volunteers Sarah and Luke initiated the effort by purchasing ingredients them -

selves and preparing soup for distribution the following day. Their initiative quickly grew into a wider community collaboration involving volunteers, local supporters and organisations. Additional soup and bread was prepared and distributed from the RDP Training Centre in Zwelihle, with support from local volunteers and donations from community members.

Soup and bread were also delivered to displaced residents sheltering in the Community Hall, while further distributions reached vulnerable residents directly within the community.

Approximately 115 people

were fed during the afternoon outreach.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed through cooking, donating, transporting, serving, organising and spreading the word. The RDP Training Centre makes an urgent appeal to the local community for assistance or donations of any kind, however small, such as food, transport or monetary donations. As the cold fronts roll in from the Atlantic and the winter chill settles over our beloved Overberg region I write to you with an urgent and heartfelt appeal; please take care of your animals this winter.

Our winters can be harsh. The biting cold, driving rain and strong southeaster winds that batter the Overberg coastline and surrounding farmlands create conditions that can be life-threatening for animals left without proper shelter, food and care.

Whether you are a farmer with livestock, a family with

pets or a community member who feeds street animals, your responsibility to those creatures does not pause when temperatures drop.

Here are a few simple but vital steps we can all take:

• Provide adequate shelter, ensure animals have a dry, windproof space to sleep and rest.

• Increase food and fresh water; animals burn more energy keeping warm and need additional nourishment during winter months.

• Check on animals regularly; do not leave animals unattended for extended periods in cold

or wet weather.

• Bring pets indoors; on particularly cold nights, keep domestic animals inside where possible.

• Report neglect; if you see an animal in distress, contact the animal welfare in your town or your local animal welfare organisation immediately. Our community is known for its warmth and compassion. Let us extend that same spirit to the animals who depend on us.

Together, let us make this a winter of care and kindness.

Die Classics for All-musiekfees wat jaarliks in Greyton en Genadendal aangebied word, is ná 22 jaar sonder twyfel as een van die oudste en belang- rikste klassieke musiekfeeste in die Overberg, indien nie in die land nie, gevestig.

Die feeskomitee, onder leiding van die feesdirekteur, Coenie Visser, stel elke jaar ’n opwindende program van hoogstaande gehalte met musici van wêreldgehalte saam. Dit is terselfdertyd ook ’n verhoog waar nuwe talent blootgestel en ontgin kan word. Die feit dat verskeie kunstenaars oor die jare gereeld by die fees optree, spreek boekdele vir die gewildheid van dié fees. Elke jaar se produksies is van hoogstaande gehalte, en vanjaar het die feeskomitee hulself oortref deur die musikale skouspel Carmina Burana aan te bied.

Weens onvoorsiene omstandighede kon Visser nie vanjaar se fees bywoon nie, maar uit Peru het hy sy vingers stewig op die pols gehou – nie net met al die reëlings nie, maar het hy ook presies geweet wat elke minuut by die fees gebeur.

Aan Hermanus Times vertel Visser: “Hoewel ek nie self by die fees was nie, is elke konsert na my deurgevoer, so vir ’n verandering kon ek na elke konsert luister, iets wat ek nooit doen wanneer ek daar is nie, want ek hardloop te veel rond. Wanneer ’n mens ’n program saamstel, is ’n mens altyd senuweeagtig of dit gaan byval vind by mense en of jy die nodige ondersteuning gaan kry. Ek het die eerste aanduiding gekry dat iets besig is om te gebeur toe ek sien dat die eerste konsert, die Cellissimo-tjellokonsert, wat in ’n tydgleuf is wat gewoonlik nie baie vol sale trek nie, uitverkoop was. Daarvandaan was dit net die een vol saal ná die ander.”

Visser noem dat hulle baie gelukkig was om die Emil Weder-auditorium te kry om vir die galakonsert 350 mense te akkommodeer, en vir die Carmina Burana-opvoering moes 175 kunstenaars op die verhoog wees, terwyl 500 musiekliefhebbers die stoele volgesit het.

Emil Weder se skoolhoof, Anthea Adonis, sê dit was ’n eer en ’n voorreg om dié twee konserte in die auditorium te kon aanbied.

Visser het verlede jaar amptelik as feesdirekteur uitgetree, maar nadat hy die Carmina Burana-opvoering in Kaapstad gesien het, het hy gesê indien dié produksie na die Classics gebring kan word, hy as feesdirekteur sal aanbly.

en die logistiek daaraan verbonde was natuurlik enorm. Maar dit was ’n groot sukses. Die mense was mal daaroor en ek het ongelooflik baie, en goeie, terugvoer daaroor gekry.”

‘JY KON ’N SPELD HOOR VAL’

Al die uitvoerings was van hoogstaande gehalte en dis moeilik om spesifieke uitvoerings uit te sonder. Visser noem dat Carmina Burana en die galakonsert beslis hoogtepunte was, maar dat veral die deelname van plaaslike mense ook ’n hoogtepunt was.

“Die Genadendal Basuinkoor het ’n uitstekende konsert in ’n vol venue aangebied. Die terugvoer was ongelooflik en dit was vir my regtig ’n riem onder die hart.”

Die tubaspeler Likhona Tokota het vir die eerste keer saam met die Basuinkoor opgetree en sê dit was ’n wonderlike ervaring. Hy het al voorheen by die Classics opgetree en volgens hom word elke jaar net beter en beter.

Joe Peters van die Basuinkoor sê dat hulle al voorheen items by die Classics opgevoer het, maar

dat dit die eerste keer was dat hulle ’n hele konsert aangebied het. “Ons het dit terdeë geniet. Die gehoor was uitstekend en die energie van die gehoor het ons beslis geïnspireer om ons beste te lewer.”

Visser noem dat Philippus Hugo ook altyd ’n groot bydrae tot die Classics lewer. “Hy het die vermoë om mense bymekaar te bring om ’n fantastiese opvoering te lewer. Dan was daar natuurlik die vonds van Leone Prins, ’n jong Emil Weder-leerder, wat in Philippus se Youthful Brilliance- konsert opgetree het. Sy was fantasties. Hierdie kind het daar gestaan asof sy elke dag voor gehore sing.”

Visser keer terug na Carmina Burana, wat beslis dié hoogtepunt van die feesreeks was. “Ek wou graag ’n kinderkoor by die produksie insluit en Greyton Primêr het ’n koor bymekaargesit. Die kinders moes die Latynse woorde leer en behalwe vir ’n paar minute voor die konsert het hulle nooit met die orkes en koor geoefen nie, maar toe daardie kinders begin sing, het ek onbeskaamd hier in Peru gesit en huil. Ek is so trots op hulle.

En ja, te danke aan Carmina Burana het ek weer die leisels van die fees oorgeneem.”

Die bekende operasanger Lynelle Kenned, wat in beide die galakonsert en Carmina Burana opgetree het, sê: “Hierdie is my vierde jaar dat ek hier optree. Dit is altyd so ’n voorreg om deel van die Classics te wees. Tydens die Carmina Burana-konsert kon ’n mens ’n speld hoor val en dit was weer eens absoluut wonderlik om musiek met musiekliefhebbers te kon deel.”

Caroline Lawrence (89) woon reeds 35 jaar in Greyton en sê dat sy in die 22 jaar van die Classics elke enkele konsert bygewoon het.

“Ek is so bang dat ek dalk ’n wonderlike uitvoering nie bywoon nie, so elke jaar woon ek elke konsert by en dit is elke keer ’n ongelooflik verrykende ervaring.”

Fortune at the Proms

Veteran South African entertainer Terry Fortune is set to headline the next instalment of the Pringle Proms cultural concert series in Pringle Bay next month, with proceeds from the intimate lunchtime event set to benefit animal welfare efforts.

The event, entitled “An Afternoon with Terry Fortune”, will take place on Saturday 13 June at the Edward Road home of author and food and travel writer Brian Berkman, founder of the Pringle Proms series. It is set to host only 16 guests.

A portion of the ticket sales will be donated to Keinmond Animal Welfare Society (KAWS), a non-profit organisation serving Rooi Els, Pringle Bay, Betty’s Bay and Kleinmond.

Berkman said the smallscale format was central to the concept of Pringle Proms. “[It] has always been about creating a personal and memorable experience where guests can engage directly with some of South Africa's most celebrated artists.”

He added that Fortune is “a true Cape Town legend with an extraordinary story to tell, and I am thrilled to welcome him to Pringle Bay.”

Fortune, born Tyrone Robertson, created his stage persona in 1971 before building a career spanning cabaret, musical theatre and live performance across South Africa and abroad.

Accumulating credits all over the world and continent, his credits include appearances in District Six – The Musical by David Kramer and Taliep Petersen, appearances at the independence celebrations of Mozambique and Namibia as well as performances at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

In 2021 Fortune received the kykNet Fiëstas Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of more than 50 years in the entertainment industry.

At the Pringle Proms Berkman will conduct a live interview with Fortune about his colourful career before the legendary entertainer performs a selection of songs.

“I have performed in many venues over the years,” he said, “but there is something special about intimate gatherings where you can connect closely with the audience.” Fortune added he was looking forward to performing in the Overberg. “It promises to be an afternoon of stories, music and good company.”

“KAWS does enviable work in our community,” said Berkman, “and we wanted this event not only to celebrate arts and culture, but also to give back in a meaningful way.”

The organisation was founded in 2001 and provides shelter, veterinary care, sterilisation services and rehoming for neglected and abandoned animals along the Overberg coast.

International Museum Day is celebrated annually on 18 May. Established in 1977 by the International Council of Museums (ICOM), this occasion aims to highlight the vital role museums play in cultural exchange, education and community development.

Museums are far more than places where objects of historical value are preserved and curated. They form an integral part of society where the youth,

especially, can be educated about their cultural heritage.

International Museum Day’s theme this year was “Museums Uniting a Divided World”.

In keeping with tradition, a speech competition for Grade 10 and 11 learners with English as first additional language was held at various Overberg museums on or around this date.

The adjudicators, Theresa Plaatjies, Georgina Simons and Rovinia Gertse, after some deliberation, announced Zetlin May of Swartberg Secondary School as the winner. Yolisa Mdayi, also of Swartberg, was placed second with Christiano Swartz of Overberg High School taking third place.

Guest speaker pastor Rodney Nissen congratulated all the participants and reminded them that debating is one of the most powerful tools.

“It teaches them that words matter and one should respect different opinions while standing by their own convictions.

“They demonstrated what preparation, perseverance and self-confidence looks like. South Africa needs young people who can think critically and communicate clearly.”

To encourage learners to participate in the speech competition at the Caledon Museum in future, Grade 7 learners from various primary schools were invited to attend since last year . This year those from Swartberg Primary School observed.

The Genadendal Mission Museum also held its own speech contest on Friday 22 May, with learners from Emil Weder High School participating. Cailey Fourie claimed first prize, with Raywena Arnoldus in second place and Rivonia Olivier in third.

The Drotdy Museum in Swellendam also held a speech competition on 15 May.

The winners were: 1st place: Petri du Toit, second place: Adna Ahmed and third place: Sindisiwe Flathela, all from Swellendam High School.

All the winners will advance to the Regional Speech Contest, which will take place later this year, with the exciting possibility of qualifying for the Provincial Contest.

Gross motor skills take a fun turn

Two occupational students at Stellenbosch University (SU) collaborated with staff at Lukhanyo Primary School to host a fun day for 312 of its Grade 1 learners.

The quarterly event held on the Zwelihle Community Sports Field took place on 23 April and is a part of a series of fun days hosted for each foundationphase grade at the school.

Emma Kahts and Sarah Stolk are final-year occupational-therapy students at SU and are currently completing their practical at the school.

“The purpose of the Fun Day is to provide the foundation-phase learners the opportunity to develop valuable skills while having fun,” said the SU students. “These skills include teamwork and, most importantly, gross motor skills.”

According to the students gross motor skills, such as body coordination, differentiating between left and right, balancing and maintaining body posture and so on are essential for learners in the foundation phase to grow and develop.

Some of the activities held during the fun day included dribbling a ball, frog

jumps and team coordination. “[These] skills are necessary for the execution of school-based tasks, such as crossing your midline to turn a page, writing, sitting upright in a chair and understanding instructions relating to left and right.”

The success of the fun day was credited to support from local businesses such as BUCO, Gateway Spar, The Wine Glass, Yorke Cash and Carry and AgriMark who all contributed to the day being valuable and unforgettable for the learners, according to the students.

However, the students stated that the school still faces critical challenges in supporting the development of the learners.

Some of these challenges include, but are not limited to, funding and playground infrastructure and equipment as well as basic stationery supplies such as pencils, crayons and erasers.

Bissetsdrift finally gets hall

After nearly four decades without a school hall, Bissetsdrift Academy in Vyeboom, between Grabouw and Villiersdorp, is set to celebrate a long-overdue milestone.

On 7 May the school opened its new Archway Foundation Hall – a facility that promises to transform life for its 1 105 learners, 36 teachers, and 11 support staff.

Established in 1987 following the merger of six local schools, Bissetsdrift has operated without this essential facility since its founding under its first principal, L S Lakay.

Under current principal Jannie van der Colff - who has led the school for 14 of his 27 years as a principal - the school has grown steadily, adding new classrooms to meet rising demand. Yet the absence of a hall remained a persistent gap.

“I have been making a sustained and determined effort since the beginning of 2023 to secure a hall,” said Van der Colff. “I submitted multiple letters to the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) and was eventually informed the school was on the waiting list. As our numbers grew, so did the urgency – and last year we finally received an approval letter.”

The hall, funded jointly by WCED and the Archway Foundation – with an additional contribution from the school’s own investment – forms part of a broader initiative that has now delivered halls to 137 historically under-resourced Western Cape schools, each valued at over R12 million.

John Matthews, CEO of the 105-year-old founding company Garden Cities, said the impact has been clear: “From the start of our hall project, improvement has been noticed in academic performance and morale. Education is the key to stability for everyone in South Africa.”

The hall will host assemblies, examinations, career expos, cultural activities including marimba, choir, chess, and Eisteddfods, and will also be made available to the broader Vyeboom community.

Na Saterdag se wedstryde waarin Hawston Skrik vir Niks Atlantics geklop het en Botrivier die onderspit gedelf het teen Universals van Stanford, het die punteleer verander en nou is Hawston die voorlopers.

Saterdag se derby tussen Skrik vir Niks en Atlantics het nie eintlik verrassings opgelewer nie. Hawston, wat dié jaar een van die gunstelinge is om na die Boland-Top-12 deur te dring, het met sy goeie spel Atlantics 36-15 geklop. Skrik vir Niks was die hele tyd op die aanval en Atlantics moes hul keer goed ken. Maar moet niks van Atlantics wegvat nie. Die span, wat verlede jaar nog in die Streekuitdaag-reeks gespeel het, het

Suid-Afrika het besonder goed by die Afrika-atletiekkampioenskap vir seniors in Accra, Ghana gevaar deur 22 medaljes te verower. Soos verwag het die hoogspringer Matao le Roux van Caledon bygedra tot die medaljetotaal deur ’n silwermedalje huis toe te bring.

Die 17-jarige Matao spog reeds met ’n rits titels agter sy naam. In Desember 2025 het hy op 16-jarige ouderdom die Afrika-jeugkampioenskapstitel in hoogspring verower. (“Matao spring weer goud los,” Hermanus Times 17 Desember 2025.) In Maart vanjaar het hy op 17-jarige ouderdom sy ASA o.18-hoogspringtitel suksesvol verdedig (“Matao bereik groter hoogtes – vir sy oupa,” Hermanus Times 8 April 2026). Skaars drie weke later, op 17 April, het hy die byna onmoontlike vermag deur die senior hoogspringtitel by die ASA senior kampioenskap te wen. By die ASA senior atletiekkampioenskap wat van 12 tot 17 Mei in Accra, Ghana gehou is, het Matao voorverlede Sondag (17 Mei) met ’n persoonlike beste hoogte van 2.16 m die silwermedalje verower.

Aan Hermanus Times sê Matao: “Met die

gewys dat hulle hul man teen die grotes kan staan. Atlantics se verdediging was uit die boeke en het vir Hawston ’n paar keer voor die doellyn laat les opsê. Hawston gaan definitief die jaar sy ondersteuners gelukkig maak. Nie net is die samespel van die spelers van hoogstaande gehalte nie, maar die manier hoe die agterlyn die bal laat vloei, lei gereeld tot goeie drieë. Dit was ook die eerste keer in vier jaar dat daar weer ’n derby tussen die twee spanne was en die atmosfeer in die paviljoene en selfs op die veld was aanvoelbaar.

Die wedstryd is ook in ’n baie goeie gees gespeel en die twee spanne is dit eens dat hulle nie kan wag vir volgende jaar se derby nie. Verlede jaar se wenner van die Over-

berg, Botrivier, kon Saterdag nie hul onoorwonne status voortsit nie, en is op hul tuisveld deur Stanford 33-27 geklop. Van die staanspoor af het dit gelyk of Botrivier nie in die wedstryd was nie en kon hulle nie net hul lynstane wen nie, maar het ook ongedwonge foute gemaak. Stanford het baie goed gespeel en elke geleentheid gebruik om punte aan te teken.

Al het Universals in een stadium met 13 manne gespeel, kon Botrivier nie van die geleentheid gebruik maak om die wedstryd in hul guns te draai nie.

Ander uitslae was Safcol 45-5 Caledon, Bredasdorp Rangers en Grabouw het gelykop 36 elk geëindig, Villiersdorp het met ’n punt teen Genadendal verloor (24-25) en Sea Hawks het Kleinmond 36-33 geklop.

Matao hou kop vir silwermedalje

‘seniors bring beste in my uit’

Op ’n vraag oor hoe hy voel om teen senior atlete deel te neem, antwoord Matao:

“Ek verkies dit eintlik om teen seniors deel te neem. Dit is vir my ’n uitdaging, want hulle druk my om my beste te gee. Ek ontmoet nou baie atlete van ander lande en ek sien baie op na hulle, veral as hulle beter is as ek. Dit bring dan die beste in my ook uit.”

’n Hoogtepunt was ook om vir Sebastian Coe van World Athletics te ontmoet. Dié bekende middelafstandatleet het op sy dag vier medaljes by die Olimpiese Spele gewen.

Matao is baie positief oor die toekoms.

“Ek voel goed oor die toekoms. Ek wéét ek kan nog beter vaar en ek is seker dit sal

nog kom, met tyd. Ek kan nie nou beserings opdoen nie, so ek kyk mooi na myself. Ek bedank almal wat my so ondersteun, veral my ma wat altyd daar is vir my, en dankie aan God wat elke keer by my is en my dra en krag gee om my beste te lewer.

Ek is ook baie dankbaar vir my skool, Swartberg Sekondêr, se ondersteuning. Dit was ’n wonderlike ervaring dat hulle vandag vir my ’n erewag gehou het.”

Adrienne Delport, Swartberg se skoolhoof, sê: “Ons as skool is geweldig trots op Matao. Ek wil hê hy moet die hoogste hoogtes moontlik bereik en wens vir hom net goeie dinge toe. Ons het vanoggend vir hom ’n erewag gehou om hom welkom terug te heet en om sy ongelooflike prestasie te erken. E

k wens ook dat daar meer borgskappe na vore kan kom om hom te ondersteun. Die kind is so goed, maar alles moet uit hul [die gesin se] sak uit kom. Ons as skool kan maar net ’n klein bydrae lewer.

“Matao is nou in gr. 10 en hy vaar ook nou beter in sy akademie. Hy het sy balans gevind en is nou baie meer gedissiplineerd.

SVN nou bo-aan punteleer

Jy kan nie gedissiplineerd wees in sport maar dan die akademie agterweë laat nie,” sê Delport.

o.20-wêreldkampioenskap lê voor Maeve Jonkers, Matao se ma, sê: “Ek is ongelooflik trots op Matao se prestasie. Hy is maar 17 jaar oud en is nou die tweede beste senior hoogspringer in Afrika. Hy gebruik sy Godgegewe talent ten volle en daarvoor is ek baie dankbaar. Ook aan sy afrigter, Heinrich Fortuin, sê ek baie dankie vir sy toewyding en ondersteuning.” Dié afrigter sê: “Die fokus die afgelope paar weke was kwaliteit bo kwantiteit. Ons fokus is nou baie spesifiek met die oog op die o.20-wêreldkampioenskap waar ons graag wil hê hy moet weer hoër spring as sy persoonlike beste. ’n Mens kan nie meer vra van ’n atleet as om net sy beste te verbeter op die hoogste vlak van kompetisie nie.

Die fokus nou is om grounded te bly, hard te werk en om kop te hou.”

Met sy onlangse sprong van 2.15 m het Matao reeds gekwalifiseer om aan die o.20-wêreldkampioenskap, wat van 5 tot 9 Augustus in Oregon, Amerika, gehou sal word, deel te neem. Hy is reeds in die voorlopige span opgeneem. Die amptelike span word binnekort aangekondig.
