The SA Air Force Technology Show, held on 21 March at the Air Force Base Overberg in Bredasdorp, was described as “a historic and inspiring occasion, bringing cutting-edge aviation and emerging technologies to the public in a family-friendly environment.”

According to a spokesperson one of the
key objective of the event is to encourage young South Africans to explore careers in STEM fields – Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. “By bringing advanced technologies and aviation expertise directly to the public organisers hope to spark curiosity among learners and students, while highlighting the important role these disciplines play in shaping the nation’s future.”
The event also seeks to strengthen the relationship between the public and the South African Air Force “while contributing to social cohesion, community pride and nation-building.”

’n dier oor die pad hardloop nie. Dit is nie net die wilde perde wat ’n probleem is nie, maar ook honde by Hawston,” vertel hy. Volgens hom is die heinings wat die buurte van die R43 skei in 2024 vir ontwikkeling verwyder en nooit weer opgerig nie.
“Ek glo nie padtekens is die antwoord nie; ek dink ’n heining sal die beste werk,” het hy gesê.

New gateway to magical Grabouw
The Elgin Valley has taken a significant step forward in promoting sustainable tourism and environmental awareness with the official opening of the Grabouw Forest Information Centre on 18 March.

The centre, funded through Dedat’s Growth Fund and built by the Elgin Grabouw Cycling Academy, exemplifies the minister’s philosophy that the infor-
mation centre serves as “a way of regulating adventure tourism” while fostering sustainable economic development. Meyer stressed that the facility reflects “how we see this place”, not merely as a tourist destination, but as a catalyst for broader regional transformation. The minister also outlined what he considered the three essential ingredients for success in South Africa: “First, you need a capable state; the Western Cape is a functional state that leaves business in the hands of people who know what to do. Secondly, when things are successful it’s about local leadership. Thirdly, you need active citizenship.”
These principles, he argued, are embodied in the collaborative approach that brought the information centre to fruition, demonstrating effective partnership among government, the private sector and community-based organisations.

outdoor activities, including hiking and mountain biking.

Meyer highlighted the Overberg’s significance in both exports and adventure tourism, noting that “a person coming for information will also invest”, underlining the economic-multiplier effects of well-planned tourism infrastructure. The facility offers detailed trail maps, environmental guides and safety information for adventure seekers while promoting responsible outdoor recreation practices. The centre is expected to boost local tourism while supporting conservation efforts in the Kogelberg Biosphere. By centralising trail information and environmental education, the facility helps distribute visitor traffic responsibly across the region’s diverse landscapes. The initiative embodies Meyer’s
hashtag themes of #fortheloveoftourism and #growthforjobs, demonstrating how strategic tourism development can create employment opportunities while preserving natural heritage.
The Grabouw Forest Information Centre represents a new model for community-centered tourism development that other regions may seek to emulate. There are two environmental guides and two biosphere rangers managed by a project coordinator under the banner of the Kogelberg Biosphere. The environmental guides will be at the information centre seven days a week to assist visitors. According to Corli Hugo, Biosphere CEO, this expansion alligns with positioning the Overberg as the Western Cape’s adventure-tourism hub.

A 21-year-old man from Stellenbosch was saved from drowning after being caught in dangerous rip currents at Kleinmond Main Beach on Saturday.
Two good samaritans used a body board and a pink rescue buoy to help pull the man to safety, with assistance from a National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) rescue swimmer.
Michael Markovina, NSRI Kleinmond coxswain, said the rescue operation began at 13:08 on Saturday 21 March, after reports of a drowning in progress. “Having returned to our NSRI Kleinmond station 42 rescue base, following routine training exercises with NSRI Hermanus and NSRI Gordons Bay, our NSRI rescue swimmers and our NSRI rescue vehicle responded immediately,” Markovina said. When rescue teams arrived, they found the young man trapped in rip currents whilst two

No members of the public have been harmed whilst using the rescue buoys in emergency situations.The NSRI has appealed to the public to help protect the pink rescue buoys stationed around the coastline, asking that they only be removed from their poles during critical life-saving rescues. Overstrand Law Enforcement also responded to the incident.

Body found floating
Police have opened an inquest docket after an unidentified body was discovered floating in waters off Struisbaai last Wednesday morning.
The grim discovery was made at approximately 11:45 on 18 March, prompting an immediate response from emergency services and law enforcement.
Sgt Wesley Twigg, police spokesperson, confirmed the victim had been declared dead on the scene by medical personnel.
The deceased was wearing an orange overall at the time of discovery, which may prove crucial for identification purposes. Authorities have launched a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, with the cause of death yet to be determined.
A post-mortem examination was expected to be conducted to establish how the person had died and potentially provide additional clues about his identity. The discovery prompted police to appeal to the public for assistance in identifying the victim and understanding what had led to the tragic incident. “The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation,” Twigg emphasised.
Rumours were circulating that it was the body of a Chinese man, but the police have not confirmed this. Police were particularly keen to hear from anyone who may be missing a relative or had information that could assist the investigation. Members of the public with relevant information were urged to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or submit anonymous tips through the MySAPS mobile application. The investigation continues.

The region’s vulnerability has become increasingly apparent, with smaller reservoirs and surface water systems bearing the brunt of low rainfall, alien invasive vegetation depleting natural water sources, aging infrastructure and rising consumption demands. The crisis has placed unprecedented strain on dams, boreholes and groundwater systems.
This year’s World Water Day theme, “Water and Gender: Where Water Flows, Equality Grows”, emphasises equitable water access is fundamental to both human well-being and ecological resilience. The theme particularly resonates in communities where women and girls continue shouldering daily water collection and management responsibilities, roles that often limit opportunities and perpetuate inequality.

The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) has recorded a continued decline in dam levels across the Western Cape, reinforcing the need for sustained water-conservation efforts from members of the community.
A statement released by DWS on 12 March indicated Western Cape dam levels had recorded a notable decrease from 49,65% to 47,93%, bringing provincial storage levels further below the 50% level.

Riviersonderend het behoorlik soos ’n miernes gelyk met sy inwoners wat op straat gestaan en die fietsryers aangemoedig het. Cape Epic-ondersteuners het die lekker pasteie en weggesteekte winkeltjies van die dorp kom geniet en selfs die laerskool se leerders het voor die kerk bymekaargekom om die deelnemers te ondersteun.
Maar dit was Greyton wat gewys het waarom hy ’n paar jaar gelede as die Dorp van die Jaar aangewys is wat almal verras het. Die vierde skof van die gewilde Cape Epic het Donderdag in Greyton begin en dié dorp in die Overberg het almal aan die gons. Die dorp en sy inwoners het uit hul pad gegaan om deelnemers en gaste te verwelkom en oral was daar versierings van fietse en die feestelike atmosfeer wat in die dorp geheers het, het almal deel van die dorp en die gebeurtels laat voel.
Leerders van verskeie skole asook die inwoners het die fietsryers van dié moordende fietsren met luide applous en wapperende vlaggies in die dorp verwelkom. Ook sakeondernemings in die dorp het gees gevang en hul persele in rooi, geel en swart versier terwyl baie ’n versierde fiets tentoongestel het. Vir baie van die opgewonde leerders moes die hoogtepunt gewees het toe van die fietsryers in die verbyry hulle met ’n high five gegroet het.

Time for change: Overberg deserves leaders who serve
As we approach the forthcoming local municipal elections I write as a concerned resident who believes it’s time for
serious reflection about the future of our beloved Overberg region.
For too long we have witnessed the devastating effects of corruption and self-serving leadership in municipalities across our province and country. While our communities struggle with basic service delivery – water shortages, power outages, deteriorating infrastructure and inadequate waste management – some elected officials have enriched themselves at the expense of the very people who trusted them with their votes.
The Overberg is a region of extraordinary natural beauty and potential. From Hermanus to Kleinmond, from Caledon to Bredasdorp, we have communities filled with hardworking people who deserve leaders who share their values and understand their struggles.

I urge my fellow residents to look beyond party politics and focus on the character and integrity of individual candidates. We need leaders who: have demonstrated genuine commitment to community service, show transparency in their dealings and decision-making, understand local challenges first hand, have practical solutions, not just empty promises, will be accessible to residents and accountable for their actions.

Ons bly seker in die mooiste gedeelte van die land – nie net wat die natuurskoon betref nie, maar ook die mense.
Ja, ek weet daar is klakouse en inwoners wat met niks tevrede is nie, maar dan kry jy weer dié wat na alles in verwondering kyk en elke liewe goeie ding deel van hul lewe maak en hul lewe ook so leef.
Ek was bevoorreg om by die Cape Epic in Greyton te wees en ek kan net na die Greyton-inwoners verwys as “next level”. Dié dorp het ’n ongelooflike atmosfeer gehad en oral was fietse wat opgemaak is en mense in die
strate waar hulle die deelnemers toegejuig het.
Ná my tydjie in Greyton (ek kom van Bredasdorp) kan ek met trots sê ek is ’n trotse Overberger en kan nie wag om nog sulke samehorigheid in die dorpe te beleef nie.
Daar is soveel mooi goed wat in ons dorpe gebeur –waarom moet alles so negatief wees? Ek stel voor ons moet met ons positiewe gesindheid ’n voorbeeld vir die res van Suid-Afrika wees en vir hulle almal wys wat ’n reënboognasie nou eintlik is.

Our Overberg communities are known for their warmth and neighborly spirit, yet online interactions frequently fail to reflect these values. Personal attacks, inflammatory language and mean-spirited comments create unnecessary division and discourage meaningful participation in community dialogue.
We can do better. Before posting, let's ask ourselves: “Does this comment contribute positively to the conversation?” Disagreement is healthy in democracy, but we can express different viewpoints respectfully. I encourage people to: Think before posting, focus on issues, not personalities, show the same courtesy online that we’d show face-to-face, remember that real people with real feelings are behind every screen. Die Kankervereniging van Suid-Afrika (KANSA), ’n organisasie sonder winsbejag, het ’n Shavathon Saterdag 14 Maart as ’n geldinsamelingsprojek by die Caledon Casino Hotel & Spa aangebied.
Hoewel ’n kleur-pretloop nie dié jaar aangebied is nie, het baie mense gekom om hul hare met funky uitwasbare kleure te laat spuit. Twee vroue het selfs hul lang poniesterte afgesny en aan KANSA geskenk vir pruike. Heleen Fourie sê: “Ons het mense na aan ons wat kanker het en selfs ook daaraan oorlede is. Ek het so vyf jaar gelede besluit om my hare spesi-
fiek daarvoor te laat groei sodat ek dit, wanneer dit lank genoeg is, aan KANSA kan skenk. Ek het so paar maande gelede my hare afgesny en die poniestert gehou om aan KANSA te skenk sodat hulle dit kan gebruik om ’n pruik daarvan te maak vir iemand wat hul hare weens kankerbehandeling verloor het. Ek het selfs my dogter Marli geïnspireer om haar hare te laat groei sodat sy dit, wanneer dit lank genoeg is, ook kan skenk. Marli se poniestert is tans 28 cm lank en sodra dit 30 cm bereik, gaan ons dit afsny.”
Nicole Philander van Myddleton het na die shavathon gekom om haar lang hare daar te laat afsny. “My besluit om dit te doen, kom al ’n lang tyd aan, maar vandat kanker onlangs by
my skoonpa gediagnoseer is, is dit so na aan my. Ek voel dalk kan ek iemand anders help. Ek dink meer mense moet dit doen – jou hare groei mos weer terug. Ek hoop om elke jaar my hare te kan skenk en sien daarna uit om dit volgende jaar weer te doen.”
Eerwaarde Patty Edwards en biskop Stafford Moses, wat ’n geleentheid van die Overberg Trust bygewoon het, het na afloop van die byeenkoms ook hul hare laat spuit.
Ian Adonis van KANSA sê: “Ons waardeer almal se bydrae geweldig en is veral bly oor die twee poniesterte wat ons ontvang het. Die shavathon help ons om bewusmaking te skep –veral ook vir mense wat bereid is om hul poniesterte te skenk.

Die gr. 2-, 3- en 4-leerders van The Glebe Primêr in Myddleton kon skaars hul nuuskierigheid en opgewondenheid beteuel toe hulle sien wat alles in hul klaskamer ingedra word. Dit was mandjies en bokse en rooi draad-en-krale-sokkerskoene, ’n opgestopte pikkewyn en die beste van alles – ’n klomp toegeskroefde glashouers met snaakse goed in.
Al dié vreemde voorwerpe was artefakte wat Sithembele Harmans van die Iziko-museum saamgebring het om aan die leerders te wys en om daaroor te praat. Die Caledon-biblioteek het Harmans genooi om by The Glebe te kom praat as deel van die Suid-Afrikaanse Biblioteekweek van 16 tot 22 Maart. Harmans het verduidelik dat biblioteke se boeke kennis aan lesers verleen en dat die artefakte museums se “boeke” is waaruit ook geleer kan word. Harmans het die leerders met sy opgewekte en innemende geaardheid in die holte van sy hand gehad. Hy het verskillende afdelings van museums aan die leerders verduidelik en vrae aan hulle gestel. Ook die artefakte soos bv. die rooi krale-sokkerskoene wat gemaak is ter viering van die Wêreldbekersokkertoenooi in 2010, wat in Suid-Afrika aangebied is, is verduidelik.
Toe dit by die glashouers se inhoud kom, was daar baie jille en gille, want hiér was eienaardige, grillerige goed soos slange in. Harmans het verduidelik dat die bottels ’n spesiale middel bevat waarin die slange en ander diere gepreserveer word. Hy het ’n klein pylstertvis uit een van die bottels gehaal om vir die leerders te wys en die vis se wapen – die “pyl” aan die punt van sy stert – aan

Toe hy ’n groot plastiekkrat nader trek en vra of enige leerder hom wil help om vir ’n rukkie ’n marienebioloog te wees, het van die leerders hul oë styf toegeknyp en hul koppe geskud.
Die 10-jarige Chrislynn Heyns het dapper na vore gekom en die blou plastiekhandskoene aangetrek, gereed om vir ’n rukkie ’n marienebioloog te wees. Sy het klein haaie asook ’n seekat uit die krat geneem en aan die leerders gewys terwyl Harmans meer oor hulle vertel het.
Hierdie besoek van die Iziko-museum is gewis een wat die leerders van The Glebe nie gou sal vergeet nie.

“Elke druppel tel...” Dít is die belangrike boodskap wat in die boekie Tekile en die druppels wat saak maak oorgedra word. Die waterbewusmakingsboekie vir kinders, wat deur die Theewaterskloof-munisipaliteit saamgestel is, is verlede Dinsdag (17 Maart) amptelik by Swartberg Primêr bekend gestel.
Die bekendstelling van die boekie was deel van Caledon-biblioteek se Biblioteekweek-program. Graad-Rleerders is tydens ’n interaktiewe saamleessessie aan Tekile, ’n jong waterheld wat kinders oor die belangrikheid van water en waterbesparing leer, voorgestel.
In die boekie vertel Tekile nie net oor die belangrikheid van water nie, maar gee ook praktiese wenke oor die verantwoordelike gebruik van water en hoe om water te bespaar. Kutlaono Letshola en Vaughn Jacobs, albei YeBoneers verbonde aan die

Bewusmaking oor ’n ernstige aangeleentheid kan ook op ’n prettige manier gedoen word – en dit is presies hoe die tuberkulosebewusmakingsdag die afgelope Woensdag (18 Maart) by Botrivier Primêr plaasgevind het. Hoewel Wêreld-TB-dag jaarliks op 24 Maart plaasvind, is bewusmaking oor dié ernstige siekte reeds die voorafgaande week by Botrivier Primêr gedoen. Die skoolhoof, Deidré Daniels, het aan Hermanus Times gesê:
“Ons het ’n voorgeskrewe program van die WKOD wat ons vir hierdie dag volg. Ons doen dit al jare hier by die skool en sien altyd daarna uit. Almal was betrokke. Ons het vir die grondslagfaseleerders ’n inkleurkompetisie gehou, sowel as ’n plakkaatkompetisie, en die onderwysers het hul klaskamers se deure versier.”
Dat die leerders tydens die voorafgaande bewusmaking van TB goed opgelet het, was duidelik toe suster Ziyanda Damse van die gesondheidsdepartement en die Botrivier-kliniek vrae oor TB
gevra het. Al haar vrae oor wat TB is, die simptome en die behandeling daarvan, is korrek deur die leerders beantwoord. In Damse se interaktiewe aanbieding het sy ook inligtingsplakkate gebruik, wat met trots deur van die leerders omhoog gehou is.
Samonay Sarels van die Botrivier-biblioteek en haar span YeBoneers het verskeie ysbrekeritems aangebied, waaraan die leerders met oorgawe deelgeneem het. Leerders het ook gedigte voorgedra en ’n dansopvoering gegee. Die tema van al die vermaak-
Caledon-biblioteek, het die program met ’n lekker ysbreker begin waaraan al die leerders deelgeneem het. Letshola het op ’n baie interaktiewe wyse die voorlesing van die boekie gedoen. Hy het nie net gelees nie, maar ook die leerders betrek deur vrae oor moontlike waterbesparing te vra, wat geesdriftig deur die leerders beantwoord is. Tot groot vermaak van die leerders was Jacobs die waterdruppel wat die belangrike boodskap tuisgebring het. Die Caledon-biblioteek het ook verskeie kleuterskole besoek waar die boekie ook voorgelees is. Dit is gepas dat die boekie gedurende Watermaand bekendgestel is en dit is deel van die TWK se voortgesette bewusmaking van waterbesparing – veral onder jonger leerders. Die boekie is in Afrikaans, Engels en Xhosa by Theewaterskloofbiblioteke beskikbaar en digitale sowel as oudio-weergawes sal binnekort ook beskikbaar wees.

PSG Wealth Hermanus Portfolio Management and Stockbroking hosted its annual investment presentation on 19 March.At the event, Johann Els, Chief Economist at PSG Financial Services, explored whether South Africa faces a zero-growth trap or improving prospects. He presented a balanced view of the country’s economic outlook, highlighting both emerging opportunities and ongoing challenges likely to shape the medium term.
Els noted that while global risks - including Middle Eastern conflicts pushing oil prices above US$120 per barrel - pose short-term inflationary pressures, South Africa stands to benefit from shifting economic dynamics. A weakening US dollar and renewed investor interest in emerging markets are creating favourable conditions for capital inflows.
He added that South Africa’s economic fundamentals are strengthening, with commodity exports -particularly gold and platinum - benefiting from higher prices. Improving credit growth suggests a more efficient credit cycle is underway, supported by a prudent fiscal framework, including a R160 billion reduction in domestic borrowing. Further evidence of fiscal discipline is reflected in the projected primary surplus.
Els also highlighted the growing role of the private sector, noting that 7.5GW of rooftop solar installations and increased investment in renewable energy point to encouraging structural change.
Despite ongoing constraints such as municipal failures, skills shortages, and labour market rigidities, he indicated that economic growth could rise from a historical average of 1.1% to around 3% over the next five years—a modest but meaningful improvement for the continent’s most industrialised economy.
Allan Gray portfolio manager Rory Kutisker-Jacobson advocated a strategic 5–10% allocation to African frontier and smaller emerging markets, describing these regions as compelling longterm opportunities for sophisticated investors.
He highlighted the valuation gap between developed markets and frontier economies, noting that his portfolio trades at approximately 7 times earnings with a 5% dividend yield—signifi -
cantly cheaper than broader emerging market indices. Examples include quality banks in Georgia and Kazakhstan trading at just 3–6 times historical earnings.
This Allan Gray strategy focuses on concentrated portfolios of 30 to 40 high-conviction positions, with an emphasis on companies generating US dollar earnings, supported by strong balance sheets and dominant market positions. Key holdings include TBC Bank (Georgia), Zimplats (Zimbabwe Platinum Mines), and consumer businesses across Vietnam, the Philippines, and Bangladesh.
While acknowledging risks such as political instability, currency volatility, and liquidity constraints, Kutisker-Jacobson views these factors as creating opportunities for patient investors. This bottom-up, value-driven approach targets quality businesses trading at meaningful discounts, benefiting from inefficiencies in less-researched markets.
The overarching message from the presentation was clear: volatility should be viewed as an opportunity rather than an obstacle for long-term investors.

Overberg Agri het Caledon-rugbyklub (CRFC) se nuwe truie geborg en Francois Joubert, besturende direkteur van Overberg Agri, het die nuwe truie verlede Maandag (16 Maart) amptelik aan die bestuur en spelers van CRFC oorhandig.
Dié nuwe truie beeld nie net die omringende kanolalande om Caledon uit nie, maar weerspieël ook die klub se hernude visie om eenheid te bou en met die verlede herverbind te word. Die kleure en ontwerp van die nuwe truie simboliseer die erfenis van die klub sowel as die natuurlike skoonheid van die omgewing.
Dit is vir die Caledon-rugbyklub ’n voorreg om met Overberg Agri, een van die gebied se mees gerespekteerde en

Die sewende Saldanha- Super 8Paastoernooi is byna hier en spanne maak gereed vir ’n opwindende paar dae se rugby.
Die Saldanha-rugbyklub sal van 2 tot 6 April die gasheer vir die besoekende spanne, wat kom meeding, wees.
Hawston Skrik vir Niks speel vanjaar in sy eerste Paastoernooi en volgens die kaptein, Branden Hunter, sien hulle baie uit daarna. “Dit is die eerste keer dat ons aan die gesogte toernooi, wat as die grootste Paastoernooi in Saldanha bekend staan, gaan deelneem. Dit is gewis iets vir die boeke,” het hy gesê.
Volgens hom is dit ’n droom wat verwesenlik is – nie net vir die spelers nie, maar ook vir die ondersteuners. “Hierdie gebeurtenis is eintlik die talk of the town Ek was verlede week daar vir die
trekking en die hele Hawston-gemeenskap is saam met ons opgewonde en staan agter ons. Ons het die wedstryde vir die afgelope ses jaar net op televisie gevolg, maar nou is ons deel van die toernooi. Dit is iets om oor excited te voel.”
Wat die voorbereiding vir die toernooi betref, sê Hun ter hulle fokus nou net op die ligawedstryde, maar soos hy dit stel, is dit ook voorbereiding vir die toernooi. “Ons voorkeur is om eerste in die Overberg te eindig en ons werk hard daaraan. Gelukkig berei die ligawedstryde ons ook vir die toernooi voor.”
Onder die agt spanne wat gaan deelneem, is onder andere Hawston, Hamiltons, Naka Bulls, SK Walmers, Multisure Evergreens, Gardens, Vredenburg en die gasheer, Saldanha. By die bekendstelling van die
Saldanha- Super 8-Paas-toernooi, wat Vrydag 20 Maart in Langebaan plaasgevind het, is dit bekend gemaak dat Hawston in die eerste wedstryd kragte met Gardens gaan meet. SK Walmers gaan kom teen Naka Bulls te staan terwyl Hamiltons WP en Vredenburg mekaar die stryd gaan aansê. Die gasheerspan Saldanha speel teen Evergreen. Volgens kenners is die Naka Bulls gewis die gunsteling om die toernooi te wen. Nie net word hulle gesien as een van die suksesvolste rugbyklubs in Suid-Afrika nie, maar die span het ook vir drie jaar agtereenvolgens die Gold Cup gewen en ook verlede jaar die Carlton-liga losgespeel.
