In wat as ’n reusedeurbraak vir natuurbewaring aan die suidpunt van Afrika bestempel word, is pas aangekondig dat ’n fynbos-wandelpad in Struisbaai uitgelê gaan word.
Dié aankondiging is op 17 Junie op ’n buitengewone openbare vergadering, belê deur die Agulhas Erfenis- en Bewaringsvereniging (die AEBV) in die Suiderligdienssentrum in Struisbaai, gedoen. Die voorsitter, Danie Schutte, het bekend
gemaak die Kaap Agulhas-munisipaliteit (KAM) het Erf 1256, wat aan hom behoort, “in beginsel vir die totstandkoming van ’n wandelpad beskikbaar stel”. Erf 1256 beloop etlike hektaar en strek van die Suiderlig-dienssentrum tot by die nywerheidsgebied aan die buitewyke van Struisbaai.
Verkeie skaars en besonderdse faunaspesies kom daar voor – almal tipirend van die kalksteenagtige geo-strata.
Almarie Conradie, ’n plaaslike flora-kenner, het reeds van die volgende plantsoorte op die wandelroete geïdentifiseer – stinkblaar-protea, groenheide, tolbos, kommetjieteewater, aambeibossie, agdaegeneesbossie en spinnekopblom.
Volgens Schutte sal die wandelpad ’n sirkelroete omvat en ’n habitat en skuilplek vir plaaslike fauna soos bokkies, skilpaaie, slange en voëls bied. “Ons sal nie ’n enkele meter van die natuur aantas nie en is oortuig ’n omgewingsimpakstudie sal heeltemal onnodig wees,” het Schutte beklemtoon.
Die vereniging het aanvanklik twee erwe in die omiddellike omgewing van die dienssentrum in gedagte gehad. Die een erf behoort egter aan die departement van openbare werke. Schutte het in sy onderhandelings omvattende korrespondensie met die munisipale bestuurder, Wessel Rabbets, gevoer voordat die ooreenkoms beklink is, hangende ’n gedetailleerde memorandum van ooreenkoms tussen die twee partye. KAM se posisie is dat die wandelpad toerisme onteenseglik kan en sal bevorder, en daarom gaan hulle akkoord met die inisiatief van die AEBV.
Die vergadering het eenparig besluit hy ondersteun hierdie stap heelhartig. Almal het saamgestem die wandelpad sal ’n betekenisvolle bydrae vir die gemeenskap en die omgewing lewer.
Geesdriftige lede van die vereniging het reeds begin om ’n voorlopige roete deur die fynbos uit te lê en rommel, wat oor die jare daar gestort is, op te ruim.
Indringerbos soos rooikrans sal ook verwyder word.
Rusplekke met banke waar wandelaars die natuurskoon kan geniet, word in die vooruitsig gestel.
CapeNature to start fence
Following an article published in the Hermanus Times (Stony Point protection questioned, Hermanus Times 17 June 2026) , Cape Nature has made it clear that they will continue with the fencing of Stony Point.
"CapeNature will commence with the phased installation of visitor control fencing and predator control fencing at Stony Point Nature Reserve later this year. These interventions are designed to support responsible tourism, reduce disturbance to penguin habitat, and improve the management of visitor movement throughout the reserve as visitor numbers continue to grow," Cape Nature said in a press release.
According to them Stony Point plays an important role in conserving a species currently listed as Critically Endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. "Scientists have warned that African Penguins could become extinct in the wild by 2035 if current population declines continue. These implementations form part of CapeNature’s broader efforts to promote responsible tourism and ensure that conservation fees contribute to the protection of the African Penguin."
The planned improvements include new directional signage, visitor information boards, designated queuing areas, clearer parking signage, and visitor flow barriers to guide movement towards the permit kiosk and boardwalk entrance. Visitors will also receive wristbands after purchasing permits, assisting reserve staff with visitor management while encouraging responsible waste disposal through dedicated recycling bins. Access to the parking area and On the Edge Restaurant will remain open to the public during Stony Point Nature Reserve’s operating hours (07:30 to 16:00). Visitors accessing beaches and public walkways outside the reserve will not be required to pay for a conservation permit, while those entering the reserve and boardwalk area will continue to require a permit
BARRIERS CAN MOVE
"The new visitor flow barriers will guide visitors clearly from the parking area to the mobile permit kiosk and onto the reserve’s boardwalk, ensuring guests can enjoy an optimal penguin viewing experience while helping to protect sensitive coastal habitat. The barriers will not be permanently anchored to the ground and can be repositioned as needed to support dynamic visitor flow. These barriers are 1,2 metres in height and are intended to assist with directing visitor flow, rather than acting as a fixed barrier. The height from the ground will allow penguins to pass under these barriers."
They also emphasised that the fencing will help to reduce disturbance to habitat and breeding areas, discourage access to environmentally sensitive sections of the
reserve, and support the management of visitor numbers during peak tourism periods. "Anti-predator fencing will also be installed along the reserve boundaries, aimed at reducing interactions between African Penguins and land-based predators around the colony, and is intended to support conservation objectives. The installation of the fencing will be implemented through a phased approach, with rollout dependent on available funding and concurrent monitoring efforts."
BOARDWALK UPGRADE
According to them the reserve’s boardwalk remains a central feature of the Stony Point experience, "allowing visitors to observe African Penguins in their natural habitat at close range without disturbing the colony. The reserve is also home to a variety of other coastal birdlife and marine species and remains one of the Western Cape’s most popular nature-based tourism destinations. As part of broader visitor management improvements, upgrades to the boardwalk and associated infrastructure will enhance the visitor experience while maintaining alignment with conservation objectives."
Cape Nature explained that this approach has been developed in collaboration with conservation authorities and scientific partners working in African Penguin conservation and coastal ecosystem management. "While fencing alone is not an ideal long-term solution, an integrated strategy will be implemented to prioritise the survival of the species. This includes targeted predator mitigation (e.g. patrols, chasing, physical trapping,) and camera trapping to better understand and identify problem predators, and environmental education initiatives to reduce human-related pressures and promote long-term conservation outcomes."
CapeNature encourages all visitors to support conservation efforts by purchasing permits, following designated pathways, and respecting signage and restricted areas throughout the reserve. ""Local residents and frequent visitors are encouraged to consider buying a Wild Card, which allows access to all CapeNature reserves for a year and can be used at Stony Point as many times during the year as they wish. We will continue to engage with tourism operators visiting Stony Point to promote responsible tourism practices and raise awareness about the impact of visitor behaviour and large tour groups on sensitive environments. Managing visitor volumes and behaviour is a critical component of protecting the species, reducing pressure on habitats, and ensuring a positive and sustainable visitor experience."
According to them permit fee contributions collected at Stony Point are reinvested into conservation operations, including habitat management, infrastructure maintenance, visitor facilities, and environmental monitoring.

‘No grounds to prosecute’
Nearly two years after a high-profile corruption probe into allegations of “dodgy deals” by senior leaders of the Overstrand Municipality the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has declined to prosecute. The directorate ruled there was insufficient evidence to prosecute implicated individuals following an extensive Hawks investigation.
The probe stemmed from allegations of fraudulent and corrupt conduct in tender awards against councillor Clinton Lerm. The tenders were for the De Mond Caravan and Fisherhaven Lagoon sites.
President of the Alliance for Change (ACC) Masizole Mnqasela approached the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, referred to as the Hawks, in August 2024 to probe the tenders.
He alleged in a press release on 14 August 2024 that Lerm had failed to disclose his business relationship with the business partners who were awarded a contract to lease a lucrative land parcel for profit. Hermanus Times previously reported on the matter.
At the time the Muncipal Manager Dr Dean O’Neill said there were also allega-
tions of “improper involvement” of Lerm in the awarding of tenders. The allegations were made by the African National Congress and ACC as well as esteemed members of the public.
Addressing the matter then O’Neill said that the lease tender for the De Mond land had closed on 4 November 2023 before being awarded to Point Caravan Resort on 4 March 2024.
INVESTIGATIONS INTO MAYOR AND MM
“Point Caravan Resort declared their business interest with Clinton Lerm in the declaration by supplier segment of the documentation [...] Lerm declared his interest with Point Caravan Resort when he became councillor in November 2021,” said O’Neill.
The probe also called for investigations into Dr Annelie Rabie, who was Mayor at the time, and O’Neill. It alleged the processes of awarding the tender involved “dodgy deals” and criminal conduct.

Exercise of rights under a praedial servitude
A servitude is a limited real right allowing one person to use or benefit from another’s property, or to restrict how that property owner exercises their rights. This article focuses on praedial servitudes, which exist between two neighbouring properties. In such cases, one property (the servient tenement) bears a burden in favour of another (the dominant tenement).
Disputes commonly arise between these owners, often due to disagreements over the extent and manner in which the servitude is exercised. South African courts resolve these disputes by applying the principle of civiliter modo, meaning the servitude must be exercised reasonably and with due consideration. Importantly, a servitude generally does not impose a positive obligation on the servient owner unless specifically provided for in the title deed or related conditions.
The rights and obligations of both parties depend on the terms of the servitude agreement. Where either party exceeds
their rights, legal remedies are available.
The actio confessoria allows the dominant owner to enforce the servitude when the servient owner fails to comply, while the actio negatoria enables the servient owner to challenge excessive use by the dominant owner.
Additionally, either party may seek a prohibitory interdict to prevent or stop unlawful conduct, such as damage to the property or actions that unjustifiably limit access.

O’Neill said the municipality fully cooperated with the Hawks investigation from the get-go.
“From the onset the municipality coorperated fully and transparently with the Hawks’ investigation, providing all requested documentation and information, including declarations of interest of councillor Lerm,” said O’Neill in an official municipal statement on the matter. “Notwithstanding the investigation, the municipality has throughout maintained its firm position that the tender processes were conducted lawfully, ethically and in full compliance with applicable legislation.”
The nearly two-years-long investigation concluded with the DPP declining to prosecute after the extensive HAWKS investigation, citing the “lack of reasonable prospects for a sucessful investigation” as well as a lack of sufficient evidence.
“While the allegations caused significant reputational harm to the municipality the implicated councillors and the municipal manager all parties remain resolute in their confidence that the processes would withstand scrutiny,” O’Neill said.
Case postponed again
Lee-Wayne Koert who is charged with the rape and murder of his deceased girlfriend is set to reappear in court on 13 August. The case was postponed pending further investigation.
Koert is facing rape and murder charges after the death of Janine Diane Hopley (38) who was his alleged girlfriend at the time of her death. He first reported her missing on 1 May, one week before her body was found at Caledon Cemetery on 7 May.
His first court appearance was on 11 May which was postponed to 14 May to allow his application for a Legal Aid lawyer.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Hopley died three days before Koert reported her missing. It had been nine days since she died when she was found. The pair were in a domestic relationship.
On 14 May, community members submitted a signed petition to the Caledon Magistrates’ Court, NPA and the police calling for Koert to be denied bail. The petition cited various reasons why he should not be granted bail; including but not limited to: severity of the crime, interest of public safety, risk to the community and witnesses as well as justice for Hopley and her children. Koert was subsequently denied bail.
Hopley was a mother of two.
Locals to Cape High Court
A high-stakes drug smuggling operation that began in the shores of Still Bay led to the arrest of two Hermanus locals who are set to reappear in court on 28 August.
Renaldo Beukes (35) and Dicky Johan Benzien (50) are set to reappear in the Western Cape High Court in late August following their alleged involvement in murder and drug-related charges alongside five co-accused.
The drug charges are regarding a large consignment of drugs worth an estimated R252 million.
A drug dealer, Alan Bushby, was recently sentenced to ten years direct imprionsment (15 total) for dealing in drugs that he helped bring into the country from international waters off Still Bay. He entered a plea deal with the State to testify against his co-accused which include Beukes and Benzien.
Other co-accused include Matthew Fourie (23) from Durban, Jordan Cullingworth (29) from Fourways, Josip Ivanovic (39) from Sandton, Serbian nationals Nemanja Vuckovic (31) from Amazimtoti and Marco Ninc (41).
Bushby – who is from Midrand – was
convicted for dealing in 400,84kg of cocaine. Five of his 15-year sentence were suspended on condition that he is not convicted of the same offence. In terms of the plea agreement, Bushby stated that he was approached by Matthew Smith in July 2024 who asked him if he was interested in making quick money.
Smith told him that Bushby would help him recover cocaine from the sea. Although he did not know how much he would be paid, Bushby agreed and went through with it under the impression that the payment would be sufficient. He was informed that a passing ship would drop a shipment of cocaine into the international waters off Still Bay where he would need to assist in retrieving the parcels and bringing them safely ashore.
Bushby was told that the cocaine shipment weighed approximately 100 kilogrammes.
Vuckovic, Ninc and Ivanovic are also charged with contravening Section 49(1), read with Sections 1 and 48, of the Immigration Act of 13 of 2002 for allegedly being in the country illegally.
NSRI in night rescue
An ordinary voyage turned into a medical emergency that required a complex overnight rescue operation by the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) and ER24 paramedics, the unsung heroes of the sea.
A critically ill crew member was rescued from a container ship off the coast near Cape Agulhas in a challenging medical operation on 16 June.
The operation was completed at 04:43 while the vessel was at sea.
The patient was transferred to a hospital in Cape Town, where he is recovering under medical care.
The ship’s agents contacted NSRI Hermanus who were joined by ER24, before launching a rescue boat to meet the ship in Walker Bay, about 18,5km offshore from Hermanus.
“Communication with the ship’s crew and with the ship’s medical crew was assisted by a ships language translator onboard the vessel,” read an official state-
ment by the NSRI on their official website.
Upon reaching the vessel, the ship was manoeuvred to create safer conditions for the rescue.
Two NSRI rescue specialists and an ER24 paramedic climbed aboard using a pilot ladder. Once on the ship, they worked with the vessel’s medical team to stabilise the patient.
After the patient was treated and his condition improved enough for transport, rescuers used specialised rope and stretcher equipment to carefully lower him from the ship onto the rescue boat. He was then brought ashore to the NSRI base in Hermanus and taken by ambulance to hospital.
“The NSRI commended the Master of the ship and his crew for their cooperation and assistance during this emergency medical evacuation operation as well as our NSRI Hermanus crew and ER24 rescue.”
Good voter turnout
Close to three million voter registration transactions were recorded during the Electoral Commission of South Africa national voter registration weekend on 20 and 21 June, marking a significant increase compared to the equivalent registration drive ahead of the 2021 Local Government Elections.
In a statement issued on Monday (22 June), the Commission said it had recorded 2,9 million registration transactions over the two-day period, up from 1,7 million during the comparable registration weekend in 2021.
"The Commission extends its sincere appreciation to South Africans across the country who turned out in their numbers during the Registration Weekend held on 20 and 21 June. This reaffirms the nation's strong and enduring commitment to electoral participation," the Commission said. According to the them, the registration weekend achieved two major objectives: continued growth of the national voters' roll and an improved registration yield among young people.
The registration drive increased the total number of registered voters to 28,5 million. Of the 2,9 million transactions, 477 174 were first-time registrations, representing 16% of all registration activity, while 2,4 million voters used the opportunity to inspect or update their registration details.

voting stations using the Commission’s Voting Management Devices, with more than 2,5 million transactions (88%) recorded through this channel. A further 362 296 transactions (12%) were completed via the online registration portal.
updating voter information is particularly important ahead of local government elections because "there is no statutory opportunity for a voter to vote at a voting station in which they are not registered."
Female voters accounted for 16, million transactions (57%), while men accounted for 1,2 million (43%). Among new registrations, women were 53% and men 47%.
The Commission also welcomed the response from younger voters. "The Commission is encouraged by the positive response of young persons," it said. People aged 16 to 29 accounted for 785 078 registration transactions, representing 27% of all registration activity.
The same age group also made up 80% of all new registrations, with 379 767 first-time registrations.
"The figures indicate that the youth-focused campaign is finding resonance with young persons," the Commission said.
Most voters chose to register at
The Western Cape recorded 235 178 registration transactions, including 47 457 new registrations and 187 721 updates or confirmations. Nationally, KwaZulu-Natal recorded the highest number of registration transactions at 691 504, followed by the Eastern Cape with 534 773 and Gauteng with 502 229.
The Commission also announced that its Online Voter Registration Portal is now zero-rated, allowing eligible South Africans to register, update or verify their voter information without incurring data charges.
A second national voter registration weekend is scheduled for 1 and 2 August to provide additional opportunities for citizens to register or update. "The Online Voter Registration Portal will remain available until the official proclamation of the 2026 Local Government Elections," the Commission said. They thanked voters, electoral staff, political parties, community organisations and other stakeholders for a successful registration weekend.
"Every registration strengthens South Africa's democracy and ensures that communities have a voice in shaping the future of local government," they said.

Gearing up to be bicycle friendly

Western Cape Premier Alan Winde set the wheels in motion Tuesday 16 June when he hopped on his bicycle and joined a crowd of bikers, including cycles adapted for special needs, to help create Hermanus as a safe environment for those who opt for non-motorised modes of transportation.
“Our cities have been built around cars, but that is going to change,” Winde told a varied and vibrant crowd gathered on the playground at the waterfront. “This amazing town of the future starts now.” Winde was among around 200 participants in the Hermanus Community Ride & Run to help realise safer streets and promote greater mobility for people, especially children. The majority rode bicycles while others walked, ran, or rode bikes specially equipped for the handicapped the 6 km to the New Harbour and back. A shorter leg
of the journey was available for physically challenged riders, small children and infants in strollers.
The initiative originally was launched by Laetitia Jansen van Vuuren, who is behind the push to create safe bicycle paths in Ward 3, together with the Overstrand Mobility Centre, a relatively new NGO. The project is comprised of several stages, the first of which focuses on providing inexpensive bicycles and the skills, safety instruction and paths to ride them. It works with the support of the Overstrand Department of Mobility, which had a table at the Waterfront providing brochures on road and bicycle safety for children.
Ruth Mackenzie, a Rotarian and one of five directors of the Overstrand Mobility Centre, said the NGO is working together with the Municipality to improve mobility, especially in children, and create awareness of using non-motorised transport in and around Hermanus.

When the winter chill settled over Hermanus, more than 100 children in the Mount Pleasant community woke up a little warmer - thanks to a heartwarming collaboration between the Rotary Club of Hermanus, the Ulysses Biker Club (Whale Coast Chapter), and around 50 members of local motorcycle clubs. Representatives of both organisations arrived at Mama Soraya's Soup Kitchen on 12 June to personally hand out thick, warm fleecy blankets to the children in her care - including 48 children at her "Place to Be" after-care facility. The blankets were collected during the Snowball Run, a motorcycle charity event estab-
lished with one simple purpose: to keep underprivileged children warm during the cold Overberg winter months.

The Snowball Run is an event organised by the local Overstrand biker community, where motorcycle enthusiasts ride together and donate warm clothing and blankets to those in need. Riders departed on 30 May from the Whale Coast Mall and are escorted by the Traffic Department before gathering to hand over their donations to Rotary, who then distributes them to vulnerable community members.

Plans to build a Bicycle Hub for all cycling needs are underway at the Mount Pleasant Sports Field in Hermanus. The centre is based on the Langa Bicycle Hub at Langa township in Cape Town and will include sales of bicycles, equipment and hands-on learning. Members of the Rotary Club of Hermanus were on hand to help with organisation, registration and marshalling of riders as well as to ride.
Mackenzie brought and shared her passion for the project with the club, which has joined in with enthusiasm and dedication for the upliftment of the greater Hermanus community.

Think carefully before you make your mark
After the first registration weekend, it is clear that the upcoming elections are generating real interest among residents of the Overberg - and rightly so. This is not a moment to vote out of habit, loyalty, or apathy. It is a moment to think carefully, because the choices we make at the ballot box will shape this region for years to come.
The Overberg is a place of extraordinary potential. Ek woon die afgelope vier jaar in Hermanus en ek geniet al die feeste, maar as iemand wat feesmal is en gereeld by ander feeste kuier, wil ek by die feesorganiseerders weet – waarom is hier nie ’n feesatmosfeer in die dorp nie? Ek het die FynArts ondersteun en verlede jaar die Kalfiefees baie geniet, maar in vergelyking met ander feeste is ons dorp morsdood.
Ek weet nie hoe voel die ander inwoners hieroor nie en of hulle die rustigheid bo ’n feesatmosfeer verkies nie, maar volgens my is dit ’n heerlike tyd waarin straatkunstenaars en stalletjies die dorp inkleur.

G’baai penguin film ITFFA finalist

African penguins have declined by 98% since the early 1900s, but behind every rescued penguin is a team of people who refuse to give up on them. A new documentary recognised at the 2026 International Tourism Film Festival Africa (ITFFA) is bringing global attention to the conservaion battle unfolding on Gansbaai's doorstep.
Dyer Island was once home to around 25 000 breeding pairs of the African Penguin, only less than 900 pairs remain today. Now, the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary short film - produced by Rockpool Media - was named as a finalist for the 2026 ITFFA.
The festival had 438 entries across 47 countries. Moreover, the Marine Dynamics and Dyer Island Conservation Trust short film was recognised under the Tourism Products: Marine Tourism category.
But the recognition is "ultimately as story of hope".
"It shines a light on the people working every day to protect and rehabilitate seabirds, improve breeding success, monitor colonies and support long-term conservation interventions," says Christine Wessels, public relations officer and personal assistant to the CEO. "[It] also highlights the role that responsi-
ble tourism can play in conservation. There has never been a more important time to tell the story of the African Penguin."
The film was shot over the period of two years across mulitple visits and seasons, capturing authentic moments within the sanctuary and broader marine envrionment.
Husband and wife duo, Anton
Leach and Jasmin Duthie, helmed the production and helped tell and amplify the story and conservation of the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary on Dyer Island. Christine says that penguins do not follow a script and "every bird that arrives at the sanctuary has its own story, personality and medical needs".
Therefore, the filmakers and crew needed a lot of patience to find "those special moments that truly reflect the dedication of the staff, volunteers and conservation teams" working behind the scenes.
"Many of the penguins admitted to [the sanctuary] eventually return to the same waters that our guests visit on our marine
tours. There is something incredibly special about knowing that a bird rehabilitated by the sanctuary may one day be swimming freely around Dyer Island again," says Christine.
She adds that the challenges that many African Penguins and other species sometimes face can get overwhelming, but finding solutions is part of the conservation and the people working to create and find solutions work together to achieve remarkable outcomes.
With African Penguins classified critically endangered and alarming statistics, every guest who joins the marine experiences contributes to the awareness and generation of support for species that truly need it. Every guest contributes towards research, conservation and environmental education initiatives.
"One of the things many people don't realise is how much scientific research has been supported through our tourism operations over the past 25 years," says Christine. "The work conducted in the greater Dyer Island area has contributed to more than 40 peer-reviewed scientific publications."
"As custodians of the greater Dyer Island area, we see everyday how dedicated people can achieve remarkable outcomes when they work together for nature. That is the story we hope stays with viewers long after the film ends," adds Christine.

Duisende leerders van verskeie skole in Soweto het op 16 Junie 1976 betoog vir die reg om in hul moedertaal onderrig te word. Ter herdenking aan die gebeure van dié dag, wat tragies met die dood van verskeie leerders geëindig het, word Jeugdag jaarliks op 16 Junie in Suid-Afrika herdenk. Verskeie instansies reël gereeld aktiwiteite vir die jeug om dié dag te vier. In Caledon het die Caledon-biblioteek, in samewerking met die Caledon-museum, die @HomeLearning Yeboneers en die departement van sport- en kultuursake verlede Maandag (15 Junie) ’n dag vol aktiwiteite vir die jeug in die Victoriasaal aangebied.
Gerhard Afrika van Wyk van die Caledon-biblioteek het kortliks die geskiedenis van Jeugdag en die gebeure van 50 jaar gelede aan die kinders verduidelik terwyl sersant Tembinkosi Gweyi en die fiksheidsinstrukteur DK Papier motiveringsboodskappe aan die kinders teenwoor-

Afrika van Wyk sê: “Die doel van die dag was nie net om lekker speletjies te speel nie, maar ook om kommunikasie, vertroue en die vermoë om na ’n gemeenskaplike doelwit te werk, onder die jeug te ontwikkel en om hulle te leer om sukses met nederigheid te hanteer en ook hoe om teleurstellings wat en wanneer dit dalk oor hul pad kom, te kan hanteer en daarvandaan die herstelpad te stap.
“Dit is hoekom ons die spesifieke sprekers gekies het om met die jeug te praat.”
Ná die praatjies kon die kinders buite aan ’n verskeidenheid speletjies deelneem, wat sokker, domino’s, skaak en ander bordspeletjies ingesluit het. “Dit was ’n baie suksesvolle oggend en almal – volwassenes inkluis – het die speletjies terdeë geniet,” sê Afrika van Wyk.

Dit was omtrent ’n miernes van bedrywighede toe Lil Antz hul jeugmark op Jeugdag by die Every Nation Church in Caledon gehou het. Die jong entrepreneurs se stalletjies het ’n groot verskeidenheid produkte te koop aangebied.
Besoekers kon kies en keur uit pannekoek, kolwyntjies, tuisgebakte koekies, verrassingspakkies, heerlike koffie, muffins, juwelierware, klere en vele meer. Vir die kinders was daar baie aktiwiteite wat hulle besig gehou het – ’n springkasteel, hulle kon hul gesigte laat verf en

Antoinette Victor en Simoné Beukes sê: “Lil Antz is ’n tuisonderrigsentrum vir leerders van verskillende ouderdomme van graad 1 tot graad 6. Sommige kinders sukkel om by groot skole aan te pas en het net eenvoudig ’n kleiner ruimte en individuele aandag nodig.
“Die meeste van die stalletjiehouers is kinders van ons skool, maar daar was ’n paar ander stalletjiehouers ook. Dit was ’n gemeenskapsprojek wat ons aangebied het en ons is so dankbaar vir die ondersteuning wat ons gekry het. Dit het al ons verwagtinge oortref,” sê Victor.

By Swartberg Primêr het dit onlangs gewemel van verpleegsters, brandweermanne, paramedici en dokters, want dit was die skool se beroepsdag waar leerders kon aantrek volgens die beroep wat hulle moontlik eendag wil volg.
Op dié dag is Swartberg Primêr se loopbaanklub amptelik bekendgestel. Verskeie professionele mense uit verskillende beroepsvelde het die skool besoek en inligting oor hul werk, ervarings, toerusting en daaglikse verantwoordelikhede gedeel.
Casey Keet, ’n onderwyser by Swartberg Primêr, het aan Hermanus Times gesê: “Die doel was om ons leerders aan verskillende beroepe bloot te stel, hulle aan te moedig om groot te droom en te help verstaan hoe belangrik opvoeding en toekomstige geleenthede is. Leerders is aangemoedig om aan te trek volgens die beroep wat hulle eendag wil volg en dit was wonderlik om soveel kreatiwiteit, opgewondenheid en selfvertroue te sien. By Swartberg Primêr glo ons elke kind het die potensiaal om groot dinge te bereik en vandag het ons leerders daaraan herinner dat hul drome moontlik is met harde werk, toewyding en geloof in hulself,”

Die Caledon- Casino Hotel & Spa se verteenwoordiger het oor werksgeleenthede in die gasvryheidsbedryf gepraat, terwyl ’n sonograaf en ’n fisioterapeut van die Caledon-hospitaal meer oor hul werk vertel het. Al die sprekers het die belangrikheid van vakkeuses en harde werk op skool met goeie uitslae beklemtoon.
Die loopbaanklub is juis gestig om vroeë bewusmaking van die werkswêreld by leerders te doen asook om die belangrikheid van vakkeuses, veral STEM-vakke (wetenskap, tegnologie, ingenieurswese en wiskunde) wat op hoërskool aangebied word, te verduidelik.
Leerders het die geleentheid gehad om vrae te vra en te hoor oor beroepe waarvan hulle dalk voorheen min geweet het.
Aangesien daar so ’n wye reeks beroepe is om van te kies, sal ander beroepe by opvolggeleenthede bespreek word.
“Die dag het ’n betekenisvolle leerervaring geskep en baie leerders aangemoedig om positief oor hul toekoms en doelwitte te dink,” het Keet gesê.

There are few winter pleasures quite like settling into a comfortable seat on a Sunday afternoon and allowing the sound of a grand piano to carry you somewhere else entirely. This July, Hermanus has exactly that to look forward to.
Overstrand Arts/Kunste (OAK) starts the second half of its season with a solo recital by Cape Town pianist Isaac van der Merwe on Sunday, 5 July. The programme is a rich and varied one, featuring works by Mozart, Debussy, Rachmaninoff, Berg, and other beloved classical composers - a journey across centuries and musical styles that has something to offer every listener.
Isaac is no stranger to the spotlight.
Trained under leading SA pianist François du Toit at UCT, he is a laureate of every major national piano competition in the country, including the Atterbury, Unisa, and Hennie Joubert National Piano Competitions. In 2024, he made his orchestral debut with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, performing Grieg's Piano Concerto under conductor Bernhard Gueller - a milestone that firmly established him as one of South Africa's most exciting young classical musicians.

Terwyl ander tieners voor die rekenaar of televisie sit en Call of Duty speel, oefen Eon Swart dag en nag aan sy geliefde sport – veerpyltjies.
Dié 15-jarige, wat tuisonderrig by Sharkies Tutor Centre ontvang, eet, slaap en droom veerpyltjies en die liefde het al van vroeg af in sy lewe posgevat. Hy vertel sy stiefpa het gereeld veerpyltjies gespeel en toe hy jonger was, het hy altyd gekyk hoe dit gedoen word. Later het hy self die veerpyltjies opgetel, na die bord gegooi en soos
hulle sê – die res is geskiedenis.
“Ek het van kleins af gespeel en vinnig besef ek geniet dit nie net nie, maar het ook ’n natuurlike aanleg. Ek het by die plaaslike klub Hermanus Darts Association aangesluit en leer baie by van die seniors wat saam met ons speel,” vertel Eon.

Eon Swart, ’n plaaslike veerpyltjiespeler, is op pad om in Bellville aan die nasionale kompetisie deel te neem.

Die kompetisie vind van 11 tot 18 Julie in Bellville plaas, maar soos alles maar in die lewe, het Eon ’n paar struikelblokke.
Hy kort R4 500 om sy droom te verwesenlik en het die steun van die gemeenskap nodig. Soos een van sy mede-veerpyltjiespelers sê: “Hy het die talent, hy het die hart en hy het die geleentheid om ons by die nasionale kompetisie te verteenwoordig. Al wat hy kort, is jul ondersteuning.”
Oor sy sport kyk hy baie op na Luke Littler. Dié Engelse veerpyltjiespeler is maar 19 jaar oud en het al verskeie wêreldtitels gewen.
Volgens Eon sal hy almal aanmoedig om veerpyltjies te speel. Hy vertel dat veerpyltjies hom nie net deursettingsvermoë geleer het nie, maar ook baie met wiskunde gehelp het.
Hy is ook dankbaar vir sy ma se ondersteuning en vertel dat sy hom deur dik en dun ondersteun.
“Sy het my al so baie geleer van hoe om geduldig te wees, hoe om te konsentreer asook baie deursettingsvermoë.”
Afgesien van veerpyljties speel Eon ook skaak en hy hou van rugby en krieket. Verder vang hy graag vis.

Jeug meer geleer oor dié inheemse speletjies

I G Games Myddleton en Safa Caledon het die afgelope Saterdag ter viering van Jeugdag op 16 Junie ’n oggend van inheemse speletjies vir die jeug by die sportveld in Myddleton aangebied.
Die jongmense het aan interessante speletjies soos jukskei, drie stokkies, kho kho asook 50m-naellope deelgeneem.
Benewens die speletjies was daar ook
stalletjies waar inwoners allerhande lekkernye te koop aangebied het. Laeeka Khatieb, een van die organiseerders, sê: “Dit was ’n baie suksesvolle oggend en almal het die inheemse speletjies terdeë geniet. Baie dankie aan almal wat met die reëlings gehelp het en bydraes gelewer het om die oggend suksesvol te maak.”
Die verrigtinge is met ’n heerlike braai afgesluit.
