Couple die in devastating fire

Theron and their dog, a Jack Russel, died trapped inside their burning home at Fernwood Villas Estate in Onrus in the early hours of Friday morning after a fire engulfed their home.

The Fire and Rescue Emergency Control Room received a call from the estate at 00:43 on Friday 15 May and while no other injuries were reported, it is suspected that the cause of the fire was either a candle or electrical fault,

according to authorities.

Jacobus and Marguerite as well as their dog died from smoke inhalation. Their family was contacted and their daughter identified the deceased. Residents of the estate say that the couple kept to themselves and that they had been in poor health with Marguerite reportedly bedridden at the time of the incident.

Residents of the estate had reportedly not had power since the morning of Sunday 10 May. They also claimed that the power had been restored on the afternoon of Thursday 14 May before going off again after a few hours.

According to witnesses and residents, neighbours rushed to assist the elderly couple with the next-door neighbour reportedly attempting to put out the fire using a hosepipe before alerting the estate chair. However, the fire was out of control and had already engulfed the apartment unit.

Authorities say that a case is still being investigated. Police have urged anyone with any information about the incident to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the mobile application, MySAPS, anonymously.

Dam levels up by nearly 20% after storms

Heavy rains that brought chaos and flooding to parts of the Western Cape have delivered much-needed relief to the province’s water reserves, with dam levels rising dramatically across all major catchment areas.

The combined Cape Town water system jumped from 50,5% to 70,1% capacity in just one week, marking a significant 19,7% increase following intense cold fronts that struck the region between 10 and 12 May.

Provincial dam levels now stand at 70,6%, up from 52,5% the previous week and considerably higher than the 54,6% recorded during the same period in May 2025.

The surge in water reserves comes as welcome relief for authorities who had expressed concerns about declining dam levels throughout the year, with various areas having been placed under water restrictions.

Theewaterskloof Dam, the province’s largest water storage facility with a capacity of 479 million cubic metres, experienced one of the most substantial increases. The dam rose from 49,5% to 71,5% capacity, surpassing last year’s May levels of 58,8%.

The Overstrand residents and especially Pearly Beach can now also smile after the good rain last week.

“Following the recent rains, the two dams supplying bulk water to Pearly Beach are now both at full capacity and water restrictions for the area are lifted with immediate effect from 19 May,” said the Overstrand Municipal Manager, Dr Dean O’Neill.

According to him the Overstrand Municipality implemented these water restrictions in Pearly Beach in February

as a precautionary measure. “Pearly Beach is supplied with bulk water from the Pearly Beach and Koekemoer Dams. The restrictions were put in place after the level of the Koekemoer Dam dropped to 40% due to damage to a private bulkwater pipeline during the fires in the area. No other areas in the Overstrand had water restrictions during this time,” he stated.

Rainfall across the Overstrand has also brought other municipal dams to full capacity, including the Buffels River Dam (supplying Rooiels, Pringle Bay, and Betty’s Bay) and the Kraaibosch Dam (supplying Gansbaai).

Hermanus) is currently at 91,9%, which is a massive increase of +24,7% from the previous week and significantly higher than the 73,5% recorded during the same period last year on 17 May.

“The Municipality extends its sincere appreciation to all residents, businesses, and visitors for their continued efforts to save water during the restriction period in Pearly Beach. Your responsible water use has played an important role in protecting our shared water resources. Every drop still counts,” he said.

June set to bring mixed news for SA motorists

South African motorists are likely to see some relief at the pumps in June, though the benefit is set to be partially offset by the phased withdrawal of a government fuel levy discount introduced earlier this year.

Mid-month figures from the Central Energy Fund (CEF) point to a more settled pricing environment after two turbulent months. A resilient Rand and relatively range-bound oil prices – still above US$100 per barrel – have contributed to modest fuel price recoveries.

Petrol recoveries currently sit between -13 and -19 cents per litre, a dramatic improvement from the severe under-recoveries recorded in April and May. Diesel tells an even stronger story. Following cumulative price hikes of nearly R13 per litre over the past two months, diesel is now showing an over-recovery of between R3,52 and

R4,41 per litre – a significant turnaround. Although motorists in South Africa may get some relief at the fuel pumps next month, government’s phased withdrawal of the fuel levy discount may counter any victories on the international market.

Petition calls for no bail application

Her joy and smile left a lasting impression on everyone who knew and loved her. Now her loved ones were left mourning the loss of their mother, sister, niece and friend after her life was cut short, a case that has rattled the Caledon community.

Jenine Diane Hopley was only 38 years old when allegedly raped and brutally murdered by her boyfriend, Lee-Wayne Koert. Her body was found at Caledon Cemetery on 7 May following an ongoing search after he had reported her missing just a week before.

Hopley was an only child who formed a close bond with her aunt at a young age. “We grew up like sisters,” said Liezel Gardiner, her aunt. “[We] always protected each other.”

Hopley’s kindness was reflected in her attitude to the success of others, according to Gardiner, who last spoke to her niece on 25 April.

“If we were celebrating something in our family, for instance, such as a 21st or matric pass, she was always happy for the person.”

Hopley loved playing with her children as any loving parent did, doing anything and everything she could for them. Amid her struggles her love for them never wavered.

“She was struggling on her own, but wasn’t shy to ask for anything,” her aunt said, “whether it was do do some work at other people’s houses or washing windows.”

What’s more, she could never be angry with others, those closest to her said. Yet, despite all her fundamental goodness she suffered a death she didn’t deserve, they said, a brutal one allegedly at the hands of someone she loved.

“She was always committed to him and she loved him,” Gardiner pointed out.

Her untimely death has left her family with questions they ultimately may never have answers to. “Why did he do it?” her aunt alleged. “She was always protecting him in front of us. She did not deserve to die like that.”

Meanwhile, community members and Caledon residents, led by the Kaapse (Cape) Forum, delivered a petition with more than 200 signatures to the Caledon Magistrates’ Court and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

“The nature of [the crime allegedly committed by Koert] has sent shockwaves through the community,” it reads. “The release of the accused may cause further fear and tension [within the community].”

“Why did he lie to us knowing we loved to give her food and she would give it to him?” Gardiner asked.

Koert is expected to appear in court on Tuesday 19 May.

Collaborative action the key

In a powerful display of community solidarity and inter-agency cooperation a highly successful five-hour Community Safety Joint Patrol was conducted throughout Grabouw on the evening of 16 May. It brought multiple law-enforcement and community-safety organisations in a coordinated effort to make the town safer for all its residents.

The large-scale convoy operation was led by Col Winston Coetzee, station commander of Grabouw police and the Community Policing Forum (CPF), and drew impressive support from a wide range of organisations, including Blue Light Patrollers, Grabouw Neighbourhood Watch (NHW), Old Ridge NHW, Eagles NHW, Farm Watch, Koggelberg Rangers, AGRI Protection and CULIVE Security.

The joint patrol focused on several key areas of concern within the community. Illegal establishments and spaza shops operating outside the law were identified and closed down, while dangerous weapons and alcohol were confiscated, removing tools that so often fuel crime and disorder.

Vulnerable community members who found themselves in unsafe situations were also assisted and escorted home safely by members of the operation.

Two up for theft, break-ins

Two suspects were arrested in separate incidents in Hermanus this month following alleged cases of theft, trespassing and housebreaking, with police crediting swift action and cooperation among security patrols, public safety officers and members of the South African Police Service.

The first incident, which occurred on 3 April, saw a Hermanus Public Protection (HPP) patrol officer spot a suspect in the Hermanus CBD while conducting their routine foot patrols. The suspect was allegedly linked to a recent house theft case where a JBL speaker had reportedly been stolen from a residence days earlier according to the Hermanus branch manager for Fidelity ADT.

The officer swiftly alerted the HPP control room and detained the suspect while waiting for back-up. A body search of the suspect uncovered a knife, torch and speaker in the suspect’s possession.

The suspect was taken to the Hermanus Police Station where the homeowner opened a case of theft against the suspect who was subsequently arrested.

A separate incident on 8 April saw HPP officers respond to reports of a man jumping over a fence and entering a property in Westcliff.

“The HPP control room dispatched the nearest HPP officer, a bicycle patroller as well as the HPP SRU officer,” the branch manager said. “On arrival the

occupant informed them that the suspect had walked into the property and left.”

Afterwards the officers conducted a thorough search of the area, and the suspect was found around the corner.

According to Fidelity ADT the suspect was known to HPP patrollers and had been linked to several incidents in the area over the past month.

The branch manager said the suspect had been a problem in the area for the past month and had been caught on several occasions. “But complainants refused to open cases against him,” the branch manager said.

Further investigation connected the suspect to an earlier break-in on the same property, found to have occurred only a few days earlier, the suspect chased away by the owner.

The suspect was later handed over to the police and arrested.

“The arrests were made with assistance from Hermanus Public Protection (HPP) officers and local armed-response teams,” said the branch manager. “Hermanus has a winning team on duty to protect the town and its people and I ask residents please to cooperate in driving crime out of the area.”

HPP is a non-profit funded by the Overstrand Municipality’s Special Rating Area system to provide public safety and cleansing services in designated areas of greater Hermanus.

THE POWER OF TEAMWORK

The operation has been widely praised as a shining example of what can be achieved when a community and its safety structures stand united. With so many different organisations working in harmony towards a single goal, the joint patrol stands as a testament to what true collaboration looks like. As Coetzee has previously stated, “to stop a crime one needs to stop the possibility of it. Prevention is everything.” Hence, the focus remained firmly on proactive prevention, not reactive policing.

Community members expressed their appreciation of the visible and determined effort and hope such operations will continue to build trust, deter criminal activity, and foster a greater sense of security across the town.

Celebrating our firefighting heroes

For just one day the focus shifted from the emergency calls, lights and uniforms to celebrate the dedication, sacrifice and bravery of the Overberg District Municipality's firefighters during International Firefighter's Day. The event, held annually on 4 May, brought firefighters and emergency personnel together from various municipalities and agencies across the region as well as members of the public and local and provincial dignitaries.

The purpose of the event was to “honour and recognise the firefighters who serve our communities, often under dangerous conditions.”

This according to Eben Phillips, the Acting Municipal Manager for the Overberg District Municipality.

“International Firefighters’ Day holds deep significance for firefighters as it recognises the sacrifices made by members of the profession worldwide, including those who have lost their lives in the line of duty.”

While the day provides the community with an opportunity to get a better understanding of the work of firefighters, it also serves as a day of remembrance, pride and unity for the firefighters, according to Phillips.

The event had a variety of team challenges, demonstrations, public engagement activities and ceremonial proceedings. It also served as a platform for the public to interact with the firefighters while the public learnt about fire safety, emergency preparedness and the realities that the firefighters face daily.

“Community interaction helps build trust, awareness and cooperation between the firefighters and residents,” said Phillips. “Events like these help humanise emergency personnel and encourage stronger community partnerships.”

Illegal dumping in Zwelihle sparks health concerns

Residents were raising concerns over illegal dumping in Zwelihle that had steadily deteriorated over time, transforming a space meant for human life into a street of waste, a health hazard to the community.

Hlola Street in Zwelihle has become an illegal dumping site overrun with waste from reportedly multiple sources, leaving it unusable and creating ongoing concerns for residents living nearby.

Community members said the site previously functioned as a space where children could play and residents could live next to; however, they allege that rubbish ranging from household refuse to dead animals has been dumped at the site over the years.

Businesses in the area allegedly dispose of expired or leftover stock there thus contributing to the conditions of the site.

Meanwhile, Bongiwe Nombula, Councillor of Ward 5, said that she has continuously reported the matter to the municipality from 11 April 2026.

“The municipality owns those sites at [Hlola Street],” she said. “I did alert the Council about those illegal dumping places and residents are angry because of big rats and the smell coming from it.” However, the municipality claimed enquiries regarding the original plans

and use of the site are often ward-level planning matters.

Therefore, Nombula would be better positioned to answer the enquiries, while Nombela said she had asked the municipality how to report the matter verbally and via WhatsApp.

Residents claimed the deteriorating conditions have had wider consequences for the surrounding community, particularly children living nearby.

Community leaders have reportedly gathered before to address concerns over the site and said the current councillor was aware of the issue.

“There seems to be no coherent plan from Overstrand Municipality to curb this illegal dumping and its health hazard,” Nombula pointed out.

The Overstrand Municipality said it continued to attend to illegal dumping hot spots as operational capacity allowed, according to a spokesperson at the Overstrand Municipality.

“The municipality can assist with refuse-collection arrangements, where organised community clean-up efforts are undertaken. The communities must start looking after their own environment as well.”

For the municipality illegal dumping remained a widespread challenge across the municipal area and was “unfortunately not unique to Hlola Street,” the spokesperson said.

O’berg electricity is in a shambles

Although Eskom boasts it has not implemented load shedding for a year now the towns in the Overstrand do not agree with that statement at all. Because towns such as Botrivier, Grabouw, Betty’s Bay and neighbourhoods such as Onrus, Vermont, Fisherhaven and Hawston are regularly without electricity for days at a time, and not even just two hours per day.

It has now also emerged that vandals are playing a major role in the electricity problems, after it came to light that power poles were sawed down late last week. The municipality even offered a R5 000 reward for those who had more information regarding the vandalism.

The electricity problem last week in the Overstrand Municipality also prompted mayoral candidate for the Overstrand, Clinton Lerm, to compile a petition about the dire conditions in which residents have to live.

At the time of going to press more than 6 000 residents had taken time to sign the petition.

In an interview with Hermanus Times Lerm said: “As the Overstrand mayoral candidate I started this petition because residents across the Overstrand have experienced repeated and prolonged electricity outages for years linked to Eskom infrastructure especially Eskom Direct Clients. Communities, businesses, schools, elderly residents and all aspects of life have been severely affected.

“It became clear residents needed a unified platform to demonstrate the seriousness of the situation and to elevate these concerns directly to Eskom leadership and national government.

“The petition is not against the hardworking Eskom staff on the ground; it is about highlighting the urgent need for infrastructure attention, maintenance, upgrades and long-term solutions.”

MAYORAL CANDIDATE TAKES ISSUE UP

He said the goal of this petition is to ensure that the Overstrand’s Eskom electricity challenges receive urgent attention at the highest levels.

“We want clearer communication, stronger maintenance planning, infrastructure investment and long-term interventions to reduce the frequency and severity of outages affecting our region. The petition also serves to show the scale of public concern. Thousands of signatures demonstrate that this is not an isolated complaint, but a serious regional issue affecting the economy, tourism, livelihoods and quality of life of our residents.”

“I also want residents to understand that Overstrand Municipality has no authority over Eskom infrastructure, but that does not mean we will remain silent. We will continue engaging Eskom, pushing for accountability and ensuring the concerns of our communities are heard.

“Most importantly, this issue affects everyone regardless of politics, background, or area. The petition is about standing together as a community to demand better infrastructure stability and long-term solutions for the future of the Overstrand.”

• Although it appeared the Overstrand’s problems had been resolved there were still residents of Grabouw, Botrivier and other parts of the Overberg who had been without electricity for more than a week and did not even have water.

According to Eskom it was unable to provide an estimated time of repair as the extent of the damage was too severe but it was working on the problem.

Vermaak, students to exhibit their artwork

Veteran artist and mentor Pieter Vermaak is set to showcase his latest artwork alongside his students’ art during the upcoming Hermanus FynArts Festival exhibition next month.

The exhibition, which is set to be hosted in Onrus on 5 June, will host the work of the painter, who has spent more than four decades in the visual-art sector. He has built a stirling reputation as both a painter and a mentor to aspiring artists.

The Cradock native studied art in Stellenbosch before establishing his name, with a following as far afield as Paris and Marseille. Aside from South Africa, his work has been exhibited and sold across Europe.

“He opened his first studio in Stellenbosch about 36 years ago,” said Janette Kampherbeek, a colleague and past student. “While still teaching in Stellenbosch he opened a second art studio in Onrus in the year 2000.”

Vermaak described his art as rooted in imagination and fantasy, while possessing a strong emphasis on expression and creativity.

“Art is not just about making pictures,” he pointed out. “It is not just the skilful execution of an object. It is about the making of poetry in painting.”

The artist said his teaching style mostly focused on mentorship and encouraged his students to discover and develop their own artistic voices in a studio and environment in which collaboration persists and bears fruit.

The exhibition opens on 5 June at 18:00 and will run until 14 June. It will be hosted at 11 Sherwood Avenue, Onrus. Visitors and those attending will have an opportunity to meet the artist and his students during the exhibition.

Irna, wat in Hermanus woon en ook ’n huis in Pearly Beach het, is nie net lief vir die omgewing nie, maar gebruik ook die Overberg as agtergrond in haar boeke – soos in haar sesde boek, Kanniedood, wat op 5 Mei by die Hermanus-gholfklub bekendgestel is.

Die bekroonde skrywer was in ’n vol saal in gesprek met die oudjoernalis en skrywer Karin Brynard, terwyl die sanger Karin Hougaard die voorlesing gedoen het.

Die krimi, wat reeds ’n topverkoper in boekwinkels, is ook op Amazon se topverkopelys.

En soos in haar vorige boeke oor Storm van der Merwe, skep dit onmiddellik ’n tuisgevoel, waar plaaslike lesers die geografie van die verhaal kan volg, want dit speel weer in Hermanus en die Klein Karoo af.

Die lysie raaisels raak al hoe langer. Shirien ignoreer skielik haar oproepe, en kolonel Mier Ritchie kom met die storie vorendag dat Storm oneties opgetree het. Sy word summier tydelik ontslaan. Storm besluit op ’n kort blaaskans op Jane English se wildsplaas buitekant Barrydale. Maar Jane vertel haar dat ’n sindikaat net die vorige week skaars vetplantjies gestroop het en smeek Storm om te help om die internasionale smokkelnetwerk oop te vlek. Toe sy instem, verskyn die einste Kai Jonas weer op die toneel.

Yeboneers maak draai by museum

Die Caledon-biblioteek het onlangs die YeBoneers, wat by die biblioteek werk, asook die @Home Learning Yeboneers, genooi om die Caledon-museum te besoek.

Vir die meeste van die groep, wat uit 23 YeBoneers bestaan het, was dit die eerste keer dat hulle die museum besoek het.

Samantha Vent, ’n mentor van die @Home Learning YeBoneers, sê: “@Home Learning is ’n program wat deur die YearBeyondprogram ingestel is en waar ons met kinders in skole werk.

“Ons werk met leerders wat na ons verwys word – leerders met gedragsprobleme of wat ontwrigting in die klaskamer veroorsaak. Ons is van 08:00 tot met eerste pouse by die skool.

“Ons help ook leerders met hul huiswerk.

“Indien leerders sonder geldige redes van die skool af wegbly, gaan soek ons hulle en bring hulle terug skool toe.

“Ons doen dikwels aktiwiteite in samewerking met die Caledonbiblioteek en is dankbaar dat Gerhard Afrika van Wyk van die biblioteek ons genooi het om die

museum te besoek. Dit was ’n goeie geleentheid vir die YeBoneers om meer van die plaaslike geskiedenis en hul erfenis te leer,” sê Vent.

Middagtee bring talle vroue byeen

Wanneer die vroue van die Holy Trinity Anglikaanse kerk ’n middagtee aanbied, kan jy maar weet dit gaan ’n spoggeleentheid uit die boonste rakke wees. En dis presies hoe dit by die onlangse middagtee was, wat as ’n geldinsamelingsprojek in die Victoriasaal in Caledon aangebied is.

Die 54 gasvroue was verantwoordelik vir 28 keurig gedekte tafels – elkeen volgens die gasvroue se eie smaak – met ’n heerlike verskeidenheid soet- en soutgebak. Die tema vir die middagtee was “Blom waar jy geplant is” en die meeste gaste het ten spyte van die koue, nat weer in vrolike geblomde uitrustings opgedaag.

Ingrid Jones – ’n TV-aanbieder, entrepreneur, sosialemediapersoonlikheid en stigter van Mikateko Media – was die gasspreker. “ Caledon is ’n deel van my komvandaan. Hoewel ek in Bonnievale grootgeword het, is ’n stukkie van my hier geplant. Ek is Patrick Geldenhuys van Myddleton se oudste dogter. Ek’s in die kerk in Myddleton gedoop en het omtrent elke Kersfees en Paasfees in Myddleton deurgebring. My oom en tannie woon nog hier in Bergsig,” het Jones gesê.

In haar treffende toespraak het Jones

gevra wat beteken “Blom waar jy geplant is” vir mense wat nie sade of saailinge is nie. “Party van ons is sade wat voortdurend rondwaai en elders blom. Party van ons is potplante – ons gaan nêrens heen nie; ons sit in die son. Party het baie water en aandag nodig. Party is droogtebestand en kan alles oorleef. Met party moet jy praat as jy wil hê hulle moet mooi groei. Maar ons is nie plante nie. Ons kan wel vergelykings tref tussen die mens en die plant en iets daaruit leer, maar die werklikheid is ’n ander storie.”

Jones het genoem “ons leef in ’n baie selfsugtige samelewing” waar die eie ek opgeblaas word en waar elkeen net vir hom- of haarself leef. “Hoe gaan ons blom in Caledon?” het Jones gevra en genoem mense moenie blind wees vir die werklikheid nie. Sy het ook verskeie maatskaplike en sosiaal-ekonomiese uitdagings uitgelig en die gehoor aangemoedig om die plaaslike ekonomie te ondersteun, om in jong mense te belê en om trots te wees op die plek waar hulle woon. “Leer ken mekaar en ondersteun mekaar om Caledon

te bou en nie af te breek nie. As ons blom waar ons geplant is, kan ons ’n verskil maak in ’n gemeenskap waarop ons trots kan wees.”

Eerwaarde Patty Edwards van Holy Trinity sê: “Die gasvroue het hulle uitstekend van hul taak gekwyt. Die saal was nie net vol met omtrent 270 gaste nie, maar ook pragtig versier. Die samewerking tussen die vroue was fantasties en ek is regtig trots op hulle, want hulle het die kerk se naam hoog gehou.

“Holy Trinity het die geld broodnodig. Ons het baie wat ons moet doen en die opbrengs van hierdie middagtee het toegesien dat ons nou ’n bietjie ekstra kan doen en daarvoor sê ons baie dankie aan die gemeenskap vir hul ondersteuning en ook aan die gasvroue wat absoluut hul beste gelewer het. As ’n mens jou beste vir die Here lewer, kan jy net die beste van die Here terug verwag. Dit is ’n manier hoe ons die opstandingsboodskap ook uitleef deurdat ons op hierdie manier teruggee sodat die Here se werk hier op aarde gedoen kan word.”

Centre relaunches soup kitchen

A Zwelihle-based non-profit organisation is calling on the wider Hermanus community to rally together in the fight against hunger, as it relaunches its daily soup kitchen, a service that once fed up to 100 people every day.

The Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) Training Centre, registered since 2004 and based in Zwelihle, has issued an urgent public appeal entitled “Hunger: A Community Call to Action”, highlighting the ongoing reality of food insecurity and poverty that continues to affect many residents.

In a letter signed by the centre’s treasurer, Dr Millicent Rink, the organisation noted that despite the development needs and aspirations that effectively drove South Africa’s “miracle transition” to a more democratic age, with everyone on the same page with regard to the need. “From April 1994, underdevelopment and hunger remain the lot of many millions, a source of deep collective disappointment across South Africa, to which

Hermanus is not immune.

“Although the government shifted its economic policy away from a needs-based RDP the policy’s spirit lives on, particularly in a centre such as this that enshrines it and its possibilities,” the letter stated.

It had initially operated a soup kitchen that provided daily meals to 90 to 100 people, and now wished to restore it so no member of the Zwelihle community went without a meal.

The RDP Training Centre appealed to local businesses, schools, churches, civic organisations and individuals to offer support through:

• Donations of vegetables, rice, soup ingredients and other food items;

• Collection drives for non-perishable foods;

• Financial sponsorships or monetary contributions;

• Transport assistance for the collection of supplies;

• Volunteers to help prepare and serve meals.

Rotary winter drive on

As winter tightened its grip on the Overberg the Rotary Club of Stanford once again reached out to the community with a heartfelt appeal, as this year the need is greater than ever.

The club launched its 2026 Winter Warmth Appeal, calling on residents across the region to donate blankets and knitted beanies to help children, the elderly and the frail survive the cold months ahead.

For many vulnerable community members, particularly those living in shacks with no safe heating, winter was not just uncomfortable, but dangerous. Flu, bronchitis and pneumonia are very real threats for those without adequate warmth, and a simple blanket can make all the difference between illness and good health.

This year the Rotary Club estimated between 250 and 300 blankets were needed, with a notably larger need for older children, a group often overlooked in winter-donation drives. Donors are asked to contribute new blankets, though second-hand blankets in clean and good condition are also gratefully accepted. Crocheted or knitted blankets for babies and toddlers up to two years of age were especial -

ly welcome, as were knitted beanies in sizes for young adults and women. For those who preferred to make a monetary donation blankets cost approximately R100 each and can be funded via a direct bank deposit.

Hearts in helmets: Nobs give back

Motorcyclists traded their helmets and leather jackets for heartfelt conversations and shared smiles with the elderly as Nobs Motorcycle Club (MCC) and Meals on Wheels Community Services – Oostenberg treated the Vrederus Tehuis with gifts and donations ahead of Mother's Day.

What started as a simple outreach and donation campaign turned into an emotional cause for Nobs MCC motorcyclists and Meals on Wheels personnel, who shared smiles, laughter, conversations and food items with the elderly at the home.

The group arrived with and donated various food items, including non-perishables, fresh fruit and vegetables and sweet treats for the residents, pairing them with Mother’s Day gifts for each of them.

The initiative comes after Nobs MCC hosted its inaugural biking rally, the Gargoyle, at the Villiersdorp Showgrounds.

Hermanus has reason to celebrate.

Local bodyboarding star Tristan Roberts has done it again!

Roberts claimed the 2026 Antofagasta Bodyboard Festival (ABF) Men Prime title at the iconic Nilda Point break in Chile, securing his second ABF crown in a stunning final that had more than 12 000 spectators on the northern Chilean coast holding their breath. His first title was in Morocco.

The event, widely regarded as the most spectacular in the festival’s history, confirmed Roberts as one of the most dominant forces in competitive bodyboarding today.

In a fiercely contested final, the Hermanus local faced Chilean crowd favourite Moisés Silva, who put up a remarkable performance to claim a historic runner-up finish on home soil. But it was Roberts who rose above the noise, delivering the kind of explosive, composed surfing that has become his trademark.

For Hermanus, a town that has long nurtured Roberts’ love for the ocean, the victory is deeply personal. Those who watched him grow up riding the swells of Walker Bay always knew he was destined for greatness, and he continues to deliver

on that promise on the world stage. “This win means everything,” he said following the final. This ambassador for Hermanus is set to carry his hometown wherever he competes.

In his interview after the win, Roberts said: “I am stronger than ever. I am from a small town in South Africa, living my dream to be here. I am so grateful for it. Thanks to everybody back home.”

The tour started in Morocco and moved to the Antofagasta Bodyboard Festival in Chile, with upcoming events in Brazil in May, then Mexico and the Maldives. Roberts is leading the men’s ranking with 10 000 points, with Amaury Lavernhe from Spain in the second place with 6 700 points.

Brooklyn en haar fluitjie is reg vir die rugby

“Ek kom uit ’n rugbyhuis. Ons as gesin het gereeld voor die TV gesit en rugby gekyk – veral as dit ’n Wêreldbekerreeks was. Maar, om eerlik te wees – ek het dit nie altyd verstaan nie,” sê Brooklyn Okkers, die 17-jarige graad 12leerder aan die Hoërskool Overberg, wat pas as die jongste rugbyskeidsregter in die Boland gekwalifiseer het.

Brooklyn het aan Hermanus Times gesê sy en haar ma, Abigail, het vier jaar gelede na Swartberg Sekondêr se interskole-rugbywedstryde gekyk. Hulle was op pad uit toe Brooklyn sien Caledon se derde span draf uit om te speel. “Hoewel ek in daardie stadium nog nie in klubrugby belanggestel of eintlik geweet het waaroor dit gaan nie, het ek vir

my ma gesê ek wil graag kyk. Ek was absoluut amazed”. Terug by die huis het Brooklyn haar pa, Brendon, gevra om haar meer oor rugby en die reëls te vertel, wat sy glad nie geken het nie.

Toe Brooklyn se jonger broer Mason begin rugby speel, het hulle as gesin elkeen van sy wedstryde bygewoon. As vurige Callies-ondersteuners het hulle ook gereeld klubwedstryde bygewoon. “Ek het begin belangstel in die calls wat die skeidsregters maak en hulle al hoe meer dopgehou,” sê Brooklyn. Brooklyn het verlede jaar gesê sy wil graag ’n skeidsregter word. “My ouers ondersteun my al die pad en nadat ek my BokSmartkwalifikasie verkry het – ’n veiligheidskwalifikasie wat vir alle skeidsregters verpligtend is – het my pa voorgestel dat ek ook

World Rugby se kursusse doen. Ek het die ses World Rugby-kursusse aanlyn gedoen en op 26 April die praktiese deel by die Boland-stadion in Wellington.”

Brooklyn mag weens haar ouderdom nog net in skolerugby-wedstryde blaas. “Ek het nog nie wedstryde geblaas nie, maar een van die afrigters hier by die skool het aangebied dat ek hom kan shadow wanneer die seuns oefen en teen mekaar speel.” Benewens hokkie neem Brooklyn aan verskeie skoolaktiwiteite deel. Sy is die hoof-rasieleier en is lid van die redenaars- en debatspan. Sy beoog om ná skool in die regte te studeer. “Ek is baie erg oor reg en orde en om die regte ding te doen en ek voel die skeidsregter-dinge gaan my ook help om die regte besluite in sekere situasies te neem.”

Brooklyn se droom is om die fluitjie in ’n Wêreldbekerwedstryd te blaas. “Ek wil mense aanspoor om hul drome te volg. As jy die passie en liefde vir iets het, kan jy enigiets doen. Go for it!”

Haar skoolhoof, Johan Jacobs, sê: “Ons as skool is baie trots op haar prestasie. Toe ek dit aan die leerders oorgedra het, was almal baie opgewonde maar ook verbaas omdat sy dit so stil gehou het. Brooklyn is ’n baie voorbeeldige leerder. Sy het passie en dryfkrag en is ’n goeie sportvrou.

“Ons hele visie is om ’n positiewe atmosfeer vir die leerders te skep waar hulle gelukkig is en waar hulle hul potensiaal kan ontdek en ontwikkel. Brooklyn is ’n goeie voorbeeld hiervan. In die laaste jare het sy op haar stil, ordentlike manier haar potensiaal ontdek en ontwikkel en sy leef dit nou voluit uit. Sy sal ondervinding moet opdoen en ons volgende stap is om haar te help en te ondersteun. Sy is nou in haar matriekjaar; die tyd is min. Wie weet, dalk is sy die volgende Hollie Davidson, die wêreldbekende vroue skeidsregter. Niks staan in haar pad om dit te bereik nie,” sê Jacobs.
