Small-scale fishing communities in the Overberg were hot under the collar after the introduction of the allocation of the 2026-’27 traditional linefish. The decision, announced on 2 February, reduces vessel allocations for small-scale fishers from 565 to 77 tons, threatening the livelihoods of fishing communities across the country.

On Monday fishing communities from across the Overberg gathered in Arniston to air their grievances.

“We are shocked, angry and deeply alarmed,” the fishing community stated in their letter of demand to President Cyril Ramaphosa and Minister Willie Aucamp of the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment (DFFE).

“We are traditional fishers. After 1994 we have fought and continue to fight to have our sector recognised and protected. Under apartheid we were criminilised, marginalised and forcibly removed from our recourses we lived from. More than 30 years into democracy, after fighting for the Smallscale Fisheries Policy and for recognition as right holders, we are still being treated as if we do not matter.”

Some of the reasons for the reduction, as stated by the DFFE and interpreted by

stakeholders, include:

• Scientific and sustainability concerns: The DFFE indicated the cuts are part of a broader strategy to manage linefish stocks that are under pressure, claiming the allocation is guided by scientific recommendations.

• Re-apportioning of rights : The reduction is partly due to the finalisation of rights in the Western Cape, which resulted in temporary allocations previously given to other regions (such as the Northern Cape) being re-apportioned or removed.

• Finalisation of the 2026-’27 sector allocation : The department stated the 77 boats constitute the formal, final allocation for the 2026-’27 season for cooperatives.

But according to the smallscale fishermen they are “overlooked, disrespected and disregarded. It violates our constitutional right to food, livelihood, culture and dignity. Traditional linefish is the backbone of our communities. Thousands of fishers, including women and youth, depend on the resource for survival. It feeds our families year-round. Cutting our Total Allowable Effort (TAE) means fewer days at sea, no income for hundreds of households and our children going to bed hungry.”

Baboon shot in Betty’s Bay

A young male baboon was found dead from a gunshot wound in Silversands, Betty’s Bay on Wednesday 4 February, prompting a police investigation and warnings about illegal wildlife killings.

The dead baboon was discovered and reported to the Baboon Hotline that afternoon. “The Baboon Management Team immediately responded to investigate the scene, where no blood trail or obvious signs of foul play were initially evident,” said Dr Dean O’Neill, municipal manager of the Overstrand Municipality.

According to him a post-mortem examination conducted by a veterinarian revealed the cause of death as a small penetrating wound to the right side of the chest. “X-rays and further examination confirmed the projectile had penetrated the right caudal lung lobe, causing a haemothorax that proved fatal. The recovered projectile confirmed the baboon had been shot,” he stated

The Kleinmond police has opened an enquiry docket into the incident. All available evidence, including the recovered projectile, has been handed over to assist the investigation.

Authorities are appealing for public assistance, urging anyone with information to contact Kleinmond police on 028 271 8200.

This incident happened a day before the Overstrand Municipality has officially opened an inquiry docket with Kleinmond police following the death of an adult female baboon found in Pringle Bay on 1 December 2025. The investigation was formally launched on 5 February.

“These incidents have prompted renewed warnings about the legal consequences of illegally hunting baboons.

Hunting baboons without proper authorisation constitutes an offence that could result in fines up to R10 000, imprisonment for up to two years, or both,” O’ Neill said. Additionally, discharging firearms or airguns in built-up areas violates the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000, with convictions potentially resulting in five years’ imprisonment and disqualification from possessing firearms. O’ Neill emphasises that the OM holds the necessary permits and training to implement baboon adaptive management plans using non-lethal, non-harmful methods. “Shooting baboons not only inflicts unnecessary pain on the animal but also disrupts their natural behaviour and the delicate social balance within their troop,” O’ Neill stated, stressing the need for humane, non-lethal approaches to managing human-wildlife conflict that protect both animal welfare and community safety. The investigation continues.”

• Immediate caps on recreational-fishing effort in the Traditional Linefish Sector;

• An independent investigation into this decision and who must be held accountable;

• Exemption granted if the TAE is not reconsidered before permit expiry.

“Fishing is not just a job,” the protesters said, “it is our culture, identity and intergenerational knowledge passed down over generations. When our access to the sea is taken away we lose far more; our dignity, heritage and the ability to provide for and teach the next generation.”

“DFFE undertook to provide a written response to the committee and the smallscale fishers,” said acting chairperson of the committee, Noluthando Makasi.

SAWS welcomes new help

Anneline Arendse (38) was recently recruited as Animal Carer for Stanford Animal Welfare Society (SAWS). This is a new position within SAWS’ ranks. Anneline, a trained health care nurse with a deep passion for animals, knew what would be waiting for her.

At the SAWS AGM held in July last year, the SAWS Committee agreed to investigate the possibility of establishing its own Animal Care Centre in Stanford during the 2026 calendar. Fortunately, due primarily to the long-time efforts of Wendy Hanson, SAWS was in a financial position to realistically plan for such facility. The full vision was for an animal carer to be employed and suitable

premises to be found, SAWS chairperson, Robert Stewart explains.

“Serendipity was at work with the arrival of Anneline and her family in Stanford late last year, who sought out volunteer-work in the SAWS Outreach programme. Her total commitment became apparent very quickly. The Outreach team soon became very reliant on her, not only for help with the usual workload, but also in new ideas for interaction with the pet-owning community.”

Because of Anneline’s knowledge and experience in treating animals, it became obvious that SAWS had found the right candidate within the ranks of its own core of volunteers. Anneline was recruited in terms of the original vision of SAWS,” says Rob.

Passiespel nie die jaar gehou

’n Mediaverklaring aan die begin van die maand is met ongeloof ontvang toe die Hermanus-Passiespelkomitee aangekondig het dat die Passiespel in die Ou Hawe nie vanjaar opgevoer gaan word nie.

“Ná deeglike oorweging en weens intimidasie deur ’n derde party wat die Passiespel deur sekulêre metodes wil oorneem by die komitee, veroorsaak hierdie optrede dat dit buite die onmiddellike beheer is van ’n komitee wat die Passiespel en sy spelers al vir 30 jaar beskerm, organiseer en finansier,” het die mediaverklaring gelui.

In hierdie stadium is dit nie duidelik wie die derde party is nie en volgens ’n bron wil hulle dit ook nie bekend maak nie, “om dalk die Passiespel in die toekoms te beskerm”.

Volgens die mediaverklaring is alle eiendom, toerusting, teks en die klankbaan wat deur die stigterslede self gemaak is, reeds deur die komitee aan die stigterslede se erfgename terugbesorg vir veilige bewaring.

Die Passiespel, wat altyd gedryf is deur ’n komitee waarvan die regisseur die een was wat dit gefinansier het, het baie mense na Hermanus gelok. Die nuus het ook wye reaksie op Facebook ontlok en menige Facebookgebruiker wil graag die identiteit van die derde party weet, sodat hulle dalk

regshulp kan aanbied. Maar die komitee hou by sy besluit om slegs die aankondiging te maak en nie die derde party bekend te maak nie.

Die laaste opvoering van die Passiespel het in 2024 plaasgevind, ná ’n ryke geskiedenis van bykans drie dekades. Besoekers en dié wat al die Passiespel bygewoon het, is dit eens dat die gebeurtenis nie net ’n geestelike bydrae tot Hermanus gelewer het nie, maar met die mooi agtergrond waar die Passiespel opgevoer is, was dit ook ’n finansiële inspuiting vir die dorp. Soos die komiteelede dit in die mediaverklaring stel: “Die Passiespel word onthou vir sy unieke verhoog, waar die branders teen die rotse van die Ou Hawe breek en die maanlig oor die tonele van die lewe, lyding en opstanding van Jesus Christus geskyn het.

“Oor die jare het honderde toegewyde vrywilligers, dikwels in uitdagende weersen terrein-omstandighede, hul tyd en energie gegee om hier-die besondere produksie moontlik te maak, tot verwondering van duisende toeskouers.

“Die komitee het besluit om die nalatenskap van die stigterslede en vorige regisseur met waardigheid te eer, en om die Passiespel te onthou vir die geestelike betekenis wat dit oor jare heen vir soveel mense ingehou het.”

Residents march to municipality

The Land Party organised peaceful protest actions across multiple Overstrand Municipality towns on Thursday 12 February as residents marched to municipal offices in Kleinmond, Hermanus, Stanford and Gansbaai to voice concerns about service delivery and municipal billing.The demonstrations centred on issues previously outlined in a memorandum submitted to the Overstrand Municipality on 7 July 2025, containing six key demands regarding infrastructure development, billing disputes and community interventions.

In response to the protests, Overstrand Executive Mayor Archie Klaas provided detailed feedback on the municipality’s actions, addressing each demand from the original memorandum.

PROGRESS AND CHALLENGES

Regarding the protesters’ call for site visits to assess conditions in Masakhane informal settlement, Klaas confirmed that visits were conducted on the same day the memorandum was received in July 2025, with several follow-up assessments to monitor ongoing conditions. “The municipality also met its commitment to establish a timeframe for installing toilets and water taps in the informal settlement,” the Mayor stated.

“Installations were completed according to schedule. However, the response revealed gaps in direct community engagement. While protesters demanded dedicated household visits to address individual concerns, the municipality acknowledged that ‘no door-to-door visits were conducted, except for home visits related to indigent support

grants.” Instead, municipal staff were deployed at offices to handle account enquiries, and the finance team provided assistance at community halls.

FINANCIAL-RELIEF MEASURES IMPLEMENTED

Significant progress was reported on the community’s concerns about the municipality’s “Drip Policy”, a credit-control measure affecting water supply to residents with outstanding accounts. Klaas announced that credit-control actions were suspended, giving all consumers on the drip system “unrestricted free flow of water”, while debt recovery through auxiliary charges was placed on hold. The municipality conducted a comprehensive debt assessment, resulting in Council approving write-offs totalling R53 730 895,91 up to June 2025. The review of the Indigent Policy

Nog twee verdrink

Twee verdrinkings is weer die afgelope week in die Overstrand aangemeld.

Volgens die Nasionale Seereddingsinstituut (NSRI) het ’n 26-jarige Zimbabwiese man by die Botrivier-strandmeer naby Fisherhaven vermis geraak. “Die NSRI-Hermanus is om 20:13 van ’n moontlike verdrinking by die strandmeer in kennis gestel. Die man het na bewering deur die strandmeer gestap toe hy verdwyn het,” het die NSRI gesê.

NSRI-beamptes, ’n NSRIreddingsvoertuig en die polisie is na die toneel ontbied, maar geen teken van die man is gevind nie.

Polisieduikers is ook van die voorval in kennis gestel en die NSRI tesame met die polisie het die soektog Sondag (15 Februarie) voortgesit.

Ten spyte van ’n deeglike soektog is nog geen teken van die vermiste man gevind nie. Die polisie het ’n saak geopen en bevestig hulle sal met die soektog voortgaan.

Volgens gerugte het die vermiste man gereeld saam

met sy vriend in die strandmeer gehengel en was hy vertroud met die omgewing.

“Ons dink aan die familie en vriende van die vermiste,” het die NSRI in ’n mediaverklaring gesê. Nog ’n man het in ’n voorval Maandag 16 Februarie by die Gansbaai-hawe verdrink.

Gerugte doen die ronde dat die oorledene by die hawe leer duik het toe hy glo in die toue onder die water verstrengel geraak het. Dit is nie die eerste voorval wat by Gansbaai-hawe gebeur het nie. Verlede jaar het ’n 30-jarige man op 23 Februarie ook by die hawe verdrink nadat hy saam met familie en vriende gaan swem het. En ’n paar weke voor dit het nog ’n man verdrink nadat hy van sy vissersboot afgeval het.

REMAIN CONTENTIOUS

BILLING DISPUTES

One area of disagreement emerged regarding billing accuracy. Protesters demanded a review of incorrectly issued bills, but the municipality stated it was “not aware of any accounts that were incorrectly billed.” The Mayor emphasised that consumers believing they were incorrectly billed have opportunities to “lodge an objection or dispute, or to make an enquiry immediately upon receipt of the account.”

PRIORITY-AREA INTERVENTIONS

Addressing the demand for urgent interventions in Masakhane and Blompark, the Mayor confirmed these areas were prioritised, with interventions

implemented “to address urgent community needs as the budget allowed.”

Despite the substantial debt relief provided, Klaas issued an urgent plea for residents to settle municipal accounts promptly, emphasising that “timely payment is essential to ensure the municipality’s continued financial sustainability and its ability to maintain and deliver quality services to the community.” The municipality was exploring alternative debt-collection approaches, with Council considering adopting a “70/30 debt collection approach” while recognising residents’ financial constraints.

The protests highlighted ongoing tensions between community service-delivery expectations and municipal financial sustainability in the Overstrand region, with both sides acknowledging the need for continued dialogue and cooperation.

Seeing the digital as legally binding

For nearly two decades a remarkable group of women has been making waves along Overberg’s coastline, not just with their hiking boots, but with their unwavering commitment to community service and cancer awareness.

The Lighthouse 2 Lighthouse (L2L) Ladies Walk has become much more than an annual hiking event; it's evolved into a powerful symbol of female solidarity, charitable giving and the transformative power of putting one foot in front of the other.

What started in 2006 as a heartfelt initiative to support cancer survivors and their families has blossomed into one of South Africa's most impactful women-only charitable events. The vision was simple yet profound: combine the healing power of nature with the strength of community to create lasting change for those who

needed it most.

The 100-km four-day journey from the historic Cape Agulhas Lighthouse – Africa’s southernmost point – to the Danger Point Lighthouse in Gansbaai, traces one of the world’s most breathtaking coastal routes. But for the hundreds of women who have laced up their hiking boots over the years, the real destination has always been something far greater than any lighthouse beacon.

The numbers tell an extraordinary story of impact. More than 20 walks have raised more than R8,5 million for 30-plus charities, transforming the L2L Ladies from a small group of determined hikers into a registered NPO that is a lifeline for numerous organisations across the Overstrand area.

“The route may have been refined over the years, but our core mission of camaraderie, fitness and charity has remained constant” is the reflection on the

way this remarkable initiative has evolved. Organisations such as the Overstrand Hospice have been among the many beneficiaries who have felt the tangible impact of every kilometre walked and every rand raised.

As the 5-8 March walk approaches three deserving organisations set to benefit from the ladies’ extraordinary efforts: Hermanus Animal Welfare, Hermanus Senior Centre and Silwerjare-dienssentrum.

These beneficiaries represent the diverse ways the L2L Ladies continue to strengthen their community, from caring for vulnerable animals to supporting elderly residents and providing essential services to those in need.

Winemaker cracks elite list

When the Master Winemaker Top 100 2026 list was announced one name stood out not just for her exceptional wines, but the unlikely path that brought her to winemaking excellence. Natasha Williams, winemaker at Hasher Family Winery, represents everything unexpected about South Africa’s evolving wine industry.

Williams’ journey began with resistance, not romance. Growing up in a household where alcohol was strictly taboo, wine was never part of her world. “Wine was never in my cards,” Williams reflects. Her scientific mind initially drew her towards molecular biology at Stellenbosch University, until a chance encounter occurred.

The turning point came through a career counsellor’s unexpected suggestion. Williams had envisioned herself as a scientist or accountant, but he saw something different: “He told me I should consider the Stellenbosch University winemaking course. He said you would be perfect as a winemaker.” Williams walked out upset, dismissing winemaking as a “far-out idea”. After switching from molecular biology in her first year Williams discovered winemaking had fed “the curiosity I had had inside me.” The real revelation came during harvest season: “When I started getting my hands dirty I understood what it meant to make wine. It came to life when I did my first harvest.”

Williams’ personal label Lelie van Saron, tells her unique story. The Afrikaans name reflects both her approach and heritage: “Lily represents purity and humility. It speaks to my approach to winemaking. Saron pays tribute to where I come from,

which you always need to know before knowing where you’re going.”

Her philosophy draws from American slam poet Maya Angelou’s wisdom about women flowing like rivers, arriving “prepared to be herself and only herself.” Williams crafts wines that showcase fruit purity and terroir through minimal intervention, allowing grapes and winemaker to collaborate naturally.

Perhaps most significantly, she champions wine’s power to transcend cultural boundaries. A formative California internship showed her wine’s community-building potential, connecting people across languages and cultures.

“Wine translates across borders,” she explained. “You may not know what the other person is saying, but you are bonding.” Today, as Williams continues challenging misconceptions about wine consumption in multicultural South Africa, her inclusion in the Top 100 represents more than personal achievement. It symbolises the industry’s evolution towards inclusivity and innovation. From reluctant convert to recognised master Williams proves that sometimes the most unexpected journeys lead to extraordinary destinations.

When most classical musicians think about performance preparation wine pairings rarely enter the equation. But for pianist Ida Pelliccioli the marriage of music and viticulture represents an exciting frontier in concert experience.

On 24 February the Gereformeerde kerk in Sandbaai will host an unprecedented musical experiment as Pelliccioli presents an all-Bach recital paired with carefully selected wines. The evening, beginning with registration at 17:45, promises to challenge traditional concert formats through what she calls “oenological concerts”.

Pelliccioli’s ambitious programme showcases Johann Sebastian Bach’s genius as interpreted by piano masters across centuries.

The evening features Bach-Busoni “Chorale Preludes” (BWV 639 and 659), the monumental “Prelude, Fugue and Allegro in E-flat Major” (BWV 998), and Bach-Liszt's powerful “Preludes and Fugues in both A Minor (BWV 543) and B Minor (BWV 544)”.The recital concludes with two jewels: Bach-Kempff’s delicate “Siciliano from the Flute and Harpsichord Sonata No 2” (BWV 1031) and the tour-de-force Bach-Brahms “Chaconne in D Minor” for left hand alone (BWV 1004).

Raka’s Sauvignon Blanc and Quinary will complement the evening's musical journey.

The concert begins at 18:30 in the historic church on Bergsig Street, following wine and canapés from 17:45. This intimate venue provides the perfect acoustic setting for Pelliccioli’s exploration of how sensory experiences can enhance musical appreciation.

Debate on idea of Western Cape independence soon

Hermanus is set to host what promises to be one of the most provocative political debates of the year, as residents and visitors gather to discuss whether Western Cape independence would benefit all citizens of the province.

On Tuesday 24 February the Municipal Auditorium will transform into an Oxford Union-style debating chamber, where six passionate speakers will battle over the contentious motion: “This house asserts that Western Cape secession will be good for all its citizens.”

The format promises intellectual rigor and democratic engagement, with three speakers championing provincial independence and three mounting a spirited defense of national unity. After the formal presentations the

floor will open to community members, ensuring local voices are heard in this crucial conversation.

Adding an element of suspense to the evening, a randomly-selected jury will deliberate during the traditional tea break before announcing which side presented the most compelling case.

The event organiser emphasised the inclusive nature of the debate: “This is democracy in action. Whether you’re firmly for or against, or simply curious about the arguments, we want you there.”

The evening runs from 18:00 to 21:00 with free entrance ensuring accessibility for all community members.

A story of grace and accessibility

In a charming converted church hall in Hermanus something extraordinary happens three times a week. Where hymns once echoed the gentle piano accompaniment now guides a unique ballet class where grace knows no age limit, and Jo-Ann Strauss was there to witness it all.

The television personality and former Miss South Africa recently visited Hermanus as part of her inspiring ARTdacity YouTube series, with a mission close to her heart: proving that art doesn’t require formal training to enrich our lives. Her destination? A meeting with ballet legend Phillip Boyd, whose remarkable journey from international stages to a Hermanus church hall embodies everything ARTdacity represents.

Few Hermanus residents may realise they share their town with true ballet royalty. Boyd isn’t just any dance teacher; he’s a former principal dancer with the former Capab (Cape Performing Arts Board) and life partner of South Africa’s only prima ballerina assoluta, the late Phyllis Spira.

Boyd’s journey began with a childhood moment that would shape his destiny. “He accompanied a boyhood sweetheart to her ballet classes and immediately became mesmerised by the art form,” Strauss discovered during their conversation. Unlike many artistic pursuits that face family resistance Boyd was fortunate; his academic parents supported his unconventional career choice wholeheartedly.

The story deepened as Boyd shared memories of South African ballet’s golden era. “Names such as Dulcie Howes and David Poole were spoken of with awe," Strauss related. It was Howes who,

on a visit to Johannesburg, recognised Boyd’s potential and invited him to join her prestigious Cape Town school. What followed was “a world of rigorous discipline and ruthless training”, exactly what the young dancer craved. Boyd excelled, eventually becoming one of Capab’s principal dancers. His first partner was Nicolette Loxton, but it was with Phyllis Spira that he found his perfect match, both professionally and personally. They moulded together in flawless synchronicity, physically and spiritually, creating not just stunning performances but a life partnership that would last until Spira’s death.

Boyds Ballet Belles students embody this philosophy perfectly. They didn’t start ballet as children, didn’t attend prestigious schools and won’t perform at international venues. But they experience the same joy, discipline and transcendence that has made ballet beloved for centuries.

But Boyd’s story extends far beyond personal success. He took over David Poole’s groundbreaking “Ballet for All”, a school born from the pain of District Six’s forced removals, created to help disadvantaged children. Boyd and Spira renamed it “Dance for All” continuing Poole’s vision of making ballet accessible to everyone, regardless of background. Today, in what was once Christiaan Pinkton’s studio space, Boyd has created something unique. The former church hall now features specialised flooring and ballet bars, supporting what may be the world’s most inspiring dance class; students aged 44 to 77 prove it’s never

As Strauss’ camera captured the afternoon light filtering through the converted church hall, watching Boyd guide his mature students through positions and port de bras, the true magic became clear. Here, in Hermanus art continues to transform lives, not because of formal credentials or professional aspirations, but because of passion, dedication and the simple belief that beauty and grace belong to everyone. The ARTdacity series continues to explore similar stories across South Africa, proving art matters not for its exclusivity, but its incredible ability to include, inspire and enrich lives at any stage.

At the tender age of 5 Maxim Kudiyarov’s grandmother Nina Kudiyarova taught him the game of chess. Her patient guidance sparked his love of the game, turning a quiet pastime into a serious passion, so much so that he played his first official tournament at the age of ten.

His rapid progression from the following year onwards established him firmly on the competitive chess circuit.

Now 14, the Grade 9 learner at Overberg High in Caledon, has been chosen to represent the Western Cape Province for the Overberg region at SAJCCC (South African Junior Closed Chess Championship) in Rustenburg during the March school holidays.

He is now recognised as a talented, strategic player regularly placed among the top players in his age group. Known for his sharp calculation, focus and composure at the board, Maxim continues to impress opponents and onlookers.

In the Mzansi Inter-Provincial Junior Championships, held in Gqeberha in December, he competed for the Western Cape A Team. Here he finished in the top 10 and qualified for the SAJCCC.

Die vierde Overberg-uitdaging is Vrydag 13 Februarie tydens ’n geselligheid by die Tsogo Sun Caledon Casino Hotel en Spa amptelik bekendgestel.

Die Overberg-uitdaging vind Saterdag 28 Februarie op die Caledon-sportterrein plaas en volgens Nissen Holdings, die organiseerders van die toernooi, gaan dit weer eens een van die grootste sportgebeurtenisse wees. (“Spanne deel van toptoernooie”, Hermanus Times 28 Januarie).

Die rugbyspanne wat aan die toernooi gaan deelneem, is Safcol van Grabouw, Hawston, Stanford Universals en Caledon RFC. (Botrivier het aan die toernooi onttrek en sodoende sy plek aan Caledon RFC afgestaan).

DIE GEES VAN DIE OVERBERG

In sy verwelkomingsrede het Romeo Nissen gesê: “Vanaand kom ons nie net bymekaar om ’n toernooi aan te kondig nie, maar om ’n visie te vier – ’n visie van eenheid, geleenthede, ontwikke-

ling en gemeenskapsopheffing deur rugby as kragtige platform.

“Die Overberg-uitdaging verteenwoordig meer as net ’n kompetisie, dit verteenwoordig vennootskap. Dit verteenwoordig groei. En bowenal verteenwoordig dit die gees van die Overberg –veerkragtig, passievol en trots gemeenskapsgedrewe. Ons is trots om te sien hoe klubs, ondersteuners en belanghebbendes onder een vaandel saamstaan. Geleenthede soos hierdie versterk verhoudings tussen klubs, skep geleenthede vir jong talent, stimuleer plaaslike ondernemings en plaas ons streek stewig op die rugbykaart.

“Terwyl ons vanjaar se Overberg-uitdaging amptelik bekendstel, sien ons uit na opwindende wedstryde, onvergeetlike oomblikke en ’n blywende impak – op en weg van die veld,” het Romeo Nissen gesê.

Rodney Nissen van Nissen Holdings en die voorsitter van die Caledon RFC het gesê: “Vanaand gaan oor meer as die bekendstelling van ’n toernooi – dit gaan oor die voortsetting van ’n visie van vier jaar. Ons

as Nissen Holdings glo dat sport een van die sterkste maniere is om gemeenskapstranformasie te bevorder. Rugby – veral in die Overberg – is nie net ’n spel nie, dit is ’n erfenis, dit is identiteit en dit is trots.”

Nissen het genoem die Overberg-uitdaging is gestig om ’n platform van hoogstaande gehalte te skep waar topklubs in die Overberg kan meeding, jong talent ten toon gestel en gemeenskappe verenig kan word in ’n gees van uitnemendheid en respek.

Hy het die deelnemende spanne bedank vir die aanvaarding van die uitnodiging en ook genoem dat die energie van die toeskouers lewe aan die toernooi gee.

“Laat hierdie jaar se toernooi ’n nuwe maatstaf van professionaliteit en gemeenskapstrots stel. Mag die beste span wen en die gees van rugby die ware kampioen wees.”

Hawston Cricket Club third team hosted Van Der Stel from Stellenbosch over the weekend in a 20-over encounter.

On a beautiful day for cricket, Hawston’s captain Elrich Hoogbaard won the toss and chose to field. The third team are table toppers in their group at this stage. Van Der Stel scored 135 runs in their innings. Hawston’s best bowlers were Oscar Daniel with 2 wickets for 20 runs in 4 overs, E. Jacobs with 1 wicket for 17 runs in 3 overs and Cameron Bailey with 1 wicket for 21 runs in 3 overs. Hawston went into bat and was on a mission to secure the win with Leeroy Henn scoring a dashing 71 runs from 64 balls, assisting him was Hoogbaard with a well-played 16 runs. Hawston reached the target in the 19th over and secured a good win. Hawston first and second team games were postponed due to the bad weather of the week and fields together with pitches could not recover in time. This coming weekend these teams will host Swellendam. The second team

will play at Stanford, the third at Coronations in Stellenbosch, and the women will host Montagu on Sunday at Hawston Sportsgrounds. All the games start at 10:00 except the third who starts at 14:00.

• Last weekend Hawston’s first team faced Elgin in a 50-over encounter. Hawston won the toss and elected to field first. They restricted Elgin to 144 runs in their innings. Hawston’s best bowlers were Kyle Philander with 4 wickets for 37 runs in 9 overs and Philip van Wyngaardt with 3 wickets for 48 runs in 9 overs of which 2 overs were maidens.

Hawston went into bat needing 145 runs from 50 overs. The top scorer of the day for Hawston

was Waleed Saban with a patient 60 runs not out from 67 balls. Hawston scored the winning runs in the 28th over and in so doing securing a bonus point win.

The third team hosted Klapmuts Cricket Club in a feisty affair 20-over encounter at the Hawston Cricket Club. Klapmuts batted first and scored 154 runs. Hawston’s best bowlers were Chisham Witbooi with 2 wickets for 18 runs in 2 overs and Adrian November with 2 wickets for 35 runs in 3 overs. Hawston went into bat and was on a mission to secure the win with Darreu Jansen leading the charge with a glorious 56 runs, assisting him was Giovanni Gillion with a wellplayed 20 runs.Hawston reached the target in the 18th over and securing a good win.

The women’s team played last Sunday against Robertson at the Hawston Sportsground in an 20over encounter. Hawston batted first and scored 47 runs.

Roberston scored in the runs in the 10th over.

The game was played in a good spirit and one looks forward to the development of the ladies.

AHermanus High School alumnus continues to make his hometown proud on the international stage.

The waves off Morocco’s Atlantic coast witnessed something truly special last weekend as “local boy” Tristan Lee Roberts once again proved why he's considered one of bodyboarding’s greatest talents, claiming victory at the prestigious 2026 Morocco World Bodyboarding Championship.

The 29-year-old delivered a masterclass performance that had the bodyboarding world buzzing.

“I’ve been watching events since I was a kid, but I never fully understood how hard it is to win one until experiencing it myself. It can look easy when you’re watching the best in the world do what they do, but there’s so much that goes into every result.”

This latest triumph adds to Roberts’ already impressive trophy cabinet, which includes world titles from 2019 and 2022. His first championship came after victories at both the Itacoatiara Pro and the Gran Canaria

Fronton King, where he defeated two-time world champion Amaury Lavernhe in a thrilling final.
