Tributes for beloved son

‘We still love you’

He was only 10 years old, dreamed of being a social worker and was beloved by his peers, family and community. Now tributes pour in for Marquin Eathin Bruintjies, Bot River’s beloved son. No mother should ever have to bury her child; for Marquin’s family his death has left them with a big hole in their hearts.

He was the oldest of four children, who loved and cared for his two sisters and brother, and loved making TikToks videos with them.

Early last week, related his mother, Murque Bruintjies, he felt a pain in his leg. He was rushed to hospital before taking his last breath.

The cause of his death was not yet known and an autopsy report was being compiled.

Even in pain and sickness, his mother said, Marquin never dimmed his smile, nor did he stop cheering everyone around him up. “He was cheerful and always made people laugh. He loved making TikTok videos and enjoyed sports.”

Marquin’s affection for his friends, teachers and peers at Botrivier Primary School was no less forthcoming than for his family.

“He was one of my best friends,” one learner and friend recalled, while his classmates remembered him as a kind-hearted person who was always happy and showed up for those he cared about.

“He was like a brother to everyone in the class,” Aldrin Joseph, Marquin’s

class teacher pointed out in a letter honouring his life.

His classmates remembered his kind-hearted spirit and his ability always to show up for those he cared about. “We will always carry you in our hearts,” read the letter.

Two years ago Marquin hurt his leg in a rugby game that left him unable to play rugby. But this did not diminish his love for the sport. His mother remembers him as a big fan and supporter of rugby.

“He performed well academically and achieved good results during the first term,” Joseph recalled. “In addition to his academic achievements he was actively involved in athletics, rugby and mini-cricket.” His favourite subject was creative arts.

Botrivier Primary will remember his legacy of kindness, caring and sportsmanship, which his teachers, friends and the school community said would live forever in their hearts.

“Rest in peace, Marquin,” a composite of all the letters submitted by his friends teachers and classmates would say. “We will always love you and remember you, and you will always have a special place in our hearts.”

Hulle vra ook gebruikers “moet geduldig wees”.

The opening of a new youth and childcare centre in Grabouw is set to improve care and access, and raise awareness of children with disabilities.

The House of Grace Child and Youth Care Centre (CYCC) was officially opened in Grabouw on 22 May with the aim to expand specialised care for children aged 0-12 years. It is currently registered to accommodate 15 children and youth living with disabilities, according to Provincial Minister of Social Development Jaco Lindt.

“For too long vulnerable children requiring alternative care have faced limited placement options due to the shortage of specialised facilities in the province,” he said in an official statement. “The House of Grace is an important step towards changing that.”

Lindt said the facility is expected to place Grabouw front and centre in the contribution to provincial child protection and disability-care services in the Overberg.

He said it will also help “reduce waiting lists, strengthen child protection services and provide a safe, nurturing environment where children can grow, learn and thrive.”

Also, the centre opening in Grabouw will allow more children to be placed closer to their homes, which will improve and positively contribute to the children’s respective family and community support systems. “It is expected to improve access to specialised services for children with disabilities closer to home,” Lindt said in correspondence with Hermanus Times, “as well as raise awareness of the rights, care and inclusion of children with disabilities.”

Moreover, the House of Grace CYCC currently has 10 employees with plans of employing four more people who are qualified child and youth care workers.

“Every child deserves dignity, protection, specialised support and the opportunity to reach their full potential, regardless of disability,” said Lindt.

Young voters should register

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is calling on young South Africans to exercise their democratic right by registering to vote in the upcoming local government elections.

Registration weekend takes place on 20 and 21 June, with voting stations across the country open from 08:00 to 17:00 on both Saturday and Sunday.The appeal comes during Youth Month, which commemorates the young South Africans who stood against inequality and racial discrimination during the Soweto uprising in 1976.

All citizens aged 16 years and older (you can however only vote from age 18) are encouraged to register if it is their first time, or to re-register if their place of ordinary residence has changed. For local government elections, voters must register where they live and can only cast their ballots at the voting station where they are registered.

Motorist gunned down in Zwelihle

Nceba Ntshinga, an alleged taxi owner in Hermanus was shot and killed in the early hours of Saturday 13 June near a driving school. This is according to Sergeant Wesley Twigg, media liaison officer of the Western Cape South African Police Service (Saps).

The shooting incident took place at about 06:30 near a driving school in Zwelihle.

The adult male was shot and fatally wounded which led to the registration of a murder case for investigation following the fatal incident.

The registration of the murder case was done by Hermanus police.

"Police members attended to the crime scene where they found the victim inside his vehicle with gunshot wounds to the body," Twigg said in correspondence with Hermanus Times

After medical personnel arrived on the scene they declared the victim dead.

According to Twigg, the motive for the attack will be part of the police investigation.

He also added that the suspect or suspects fled the scene before law officials could arrive and that they are yet to be arrested.

Refuge for foreigners

In all, 395 foreign nationals, including 92 children, were left displaced following incidents of intimidation in Bredasdorp. This according to Wessel Rabberts, Cape Agulhas Municipal Manager.

The incidents of intimidation against foreign nationals began on 8 June in Bredasdorp, forcing people to flee their homes in fear. They were being accommodated at the Bredasdorp Community Hall.

Rabberts said the South African Police Service, Department of Home Affairs (DHA) and relevant foreign consulates had begun verification and repatriation processes. “While immigration matters and repatriation fall within the mandate of national government and foreign consulates Cape Agulhas Municipality is providing temporary shelter and faciliting the provision of humanitarian assistance to those affected by the unrest.”

“The municipality is in contact with the Malawian Consulate and is awaiting confirmation of when its verfication process will commence,” he said.

The Cape Agulhas Municipality, DHA, various stakeholders and humanitarian organisations will work together to ensure and maintain public safety while restoring stability within the community.

MIXED RESPONSE TO ANTIIMMIGRATION

Meanwhile, residents took to social media to share their opinions in response to the news. Responding to Rabberts’ statement, one resident commented: “The foreigners are hard workers [who] don’t throw trade unions in front of your head all the time. Their English is miles better than our own workers’ and one can communicate nicely with them and they are learned and eager to learn, which makes things easy.”

A foreign national commented: “As a Zimbabwean preparing to go home now I kindly thank you for having a caring heart... having us. May the Lord almighty God bless you.”

Another user commented: “The case has many sides but the crook of it is: the people should never have been here... period. No-one can just go and live in another country indefinitely without necessary legal documents, nowhere. Forget about all the reasons why they might work as a veteran, more honourable or whatever it may be; if you came in illegally you must leave because it gives distorted population statistics that impact unemployment figures and so on.”

Deveney-moordenaar

Die twee vroue het weer op 12 Junie in die Grabouw-landdroshof verskyn nadat die ma van die moordenaar ’n interdik teen hulle wil bekom om nie inligting oor haar seun te versprei nie.

Bippert en Evans het dit al in Oktober 2025 duidelik gemaak dat hulle nie stilgemaak sal word nie en sal veg vir dié wat nie vir hulself kan veg nie.

Nadat hulle die eerste keer in Junie 2025 in die hof verskyn het, is die saak nou weer tot 3 Julie uitgestel.

“Nadat ons in April 2025 gedagvaar is om in die Grabouw-landdroshof te verskyn, gaan die saak steeds voort. Die moordenaar se ma wil steeds ’n interdik teen ons bekom oor die Deveney Nelsaak wat al in 2025 afgehandel is. Ons sal nie stilgemaak word nie, en ons sal nie ophou veg nie,” het Bippert op haar Facebookblad geskryf.

Deveney Nel se lyk is in Augustus 2024 in ’n stoorkamer by die Hoërskool Overberg in Caledon gekry nadat sy deur ’n medeleerder vermoor is.

Die 16-jarige Nel is sewe keer deur haar moordenaar met ’n skerp voorwerp gesteek. Sy het ook ander beserings opgedoen.

Die moordenaar is 25 jaar gevangenisstraf opgelê nadat hy in ’n pleitooreenkoms gebieg het hoe hy haar aangerand, dood- gesteek en haar lyk weggesteek het om die moord te verberg.

Volgens hom het hy doelbewus vir haar hoofslagare gemik toe hy haar vier keer met ’n mes in die nek en bors gesteek het. Een van die messteke het haar hart deurboor.

Stony Point protection questioned

As Cape Nature pushes ahead with a major new fencing project at Betty's Bay's penguin colony, residents are raising serious questions about process, predator science, commercial motives - and whether Cape Nature itself may be part of the problem it claims to be solving.

"In Betty's Bay the African Penguin has long been a source of community pride and when Cape Nature's announced that a 2,1-metre ClearVu predator fence will be erected around the Stony Point Penguin Colony from November this year it raised concerns. Questions are asked whether Cape Nature is being straight with the community it serves," a concerned resident said.

Cape Nature has confirmed that the new perimeter fence will effectively close all unpaid public access to the colony - one of only two mainland African Penguin colonies in the world and a site of genuine international conservation significance. According to them the purpose of the fence is to protect the critically endangered birds from predators and uncontrolled human disturbance. Officials have described it as a "national standard" measure.

For most residents, the conservation goal is not in dispute. "The African Penguin is in serious trouble. Numbers have collapsed dramatically across South Africa over recent decades, and Stony Point has long been regarded as one of the species' last meaningful strongholds. Nobody who lives alongside these birds wants to see them disappear," residents said. But according to them the way this project has been conceived, communicated, and pushed through, raised some concerns.

The first point of concern was the community consultation process - or, as many residents have come to regard it, the absence of one. "A survey was

distributed to property owners inviting community input on the proposed project. On the surface, a reasonable gesture. In reality, the decision had already been made, the funds allocated, and the implementation date confirmed before a single survey form was returned," the resident said. "I call it a smokescreen survey," said one resident. "Why pretend to get our input if you are going ahead anyway? That is not consultation - that is ticking a box."

Baboon maangement is currently undergoing review and updating following the need for a more long-term, locally relevant and adaptive strategy plan for future human-baboon interactions.

The review is also in recognition of the influence and effect of these interactions in reflecting the unique environental, social and operational realities of the Overstrand region, according to Dr Dean O'Neill, Overstrand

Municipal Manager.

"While the Municipality will consider lessons and management approache from elsewhere in the Western Cape, the intention is not to duplicate other models or apply a unifrom approach across the entire Overstrand," he said.

The Strategic Baboon Management Plan (SBMP) is set to be submitted to and reviewed by an independent panel of wildlife and conservation experts by August 2026.

Those who attended report that the session did little to address the community's questions, with officials largely restating that the project would proceed. The feedback on the survey itself, according to one resident who attended, amounted to this: "You wasted your time doing the survey and we are going ahead." A further complication is that several penguins have established nests outside the formal colony boundary. The Facebook user asked what will happen to those birds once the fence is in place. "Will they be permanently cut off from their nesting sites? Will the fence simply relocate the predator problem rather than solve it?"

Other concerns are access feescoastal areas currently accessible on foot - including the rocky section behind Brigadoon past Crassula Crescent - will be closed off, with access to sections of the waterfront potentially subject to an entrance fee.

ENTRANCE REVENUE

For residents who walk to the water multiple times a week, the prospect of paying each visit is both financially burdensome and, many feel, fundamentally unjust."I am all for saving these animals - it is one of the reasons I bought here," said one long-term resident. "But I will not be paying an entrance fee two to three times a week to access the coastline. At the very minimum, a permit system for permanent residents should be on the table."

The question of where that entrance revenue will go has also been raised repeatedly - and not yet answered satisfactorily. At a recent presentation by the Betty's Bay Conservancy, Cape Nature's planned "upgrades" were reportedly showcased in an upbeat, promotional manner, with a new pay

point among the features highlighted. For community critics, this framing reveals something important about the priorities driving this project.

"If the penguins are truly in crisis," asked one resident, "why does every solution seem to involve building new revenue-generating infrastructure?"

For a group of long-term residents and conservationists, the current controversy is not an isolated incident. It is the latest chapter in a story that began more than a decade ago - and the parallels are, they say, impossible to ignore.The most serious allegation being levelled at Cape Nature is this: that Stony Point was, until 2014, the only growing African Penguin colony in South Africa. It was, by any measure, a conservation success story. Then Cape Nature formally occupied the reserveand the growth stopped.

Community members are now openly asking whether Cape Nature's own management practices, expanding infrastructure, construction activity, and growing tourism operation have contributed to the very penguin decline that is now being used to justify the new fence.

"We want to make it clear, it is not about the abandonment of the fence. It is accountability, transparency, and genuine engagement. We want an honest, independent assessment of whether Cape Nature's own activities since 2014 have contributed to penguin decline at Stony Point. We need a credible, science-based plan to address the documented predation capabilities of caracal - not simply a reference to 'national standard.' Furthermore we need a clear plan for penguins currently nesting outside the colony boundary," residents ask.

Cape Nature has been approached for comment on all matters raised in this article. Hermanus Times will publish their full response when received.

Environmental legislation, municipal planning frameworks and biodiversity management objectives applicable to the Overstrand and broader Kogelberg Biosphere will also be taken into account.

Meanwhile, the Municipality has advised that private groups and individuals should not take it upon themselves to "independently implement, direct, monitor or undertake baboon management".

"Activities taken outside the

applicable legal framework may constitute noncompliant actions and may undermine coordinated biodiversity management objectives, public safety considerations, animal welfare protocols and unlawful operational processes," O'Neill said.

Dates, venues and details of public participation processes will be communicated once the specialist review has been completed.

Bursary gives hope

They say it takes a village to raise a child but it takes a company with vision, commitment and true belief in a young person to turn their career dreams into reality.

As a beneficiary of Klipheuwel Wind Farm’s community bursary programme 19-year-old Dawn Abrahams of Genadendal is turning her life-long ambition of becoming a doctor into reality.

The alumna of LR Schmidt Primary School in Genadendal and Overberg High in Caledon was awarded the bursary in 2025 and is currently studying medicine at Stellenbosch University. She is now almost halfway through her second year.

Abrahams is among five beneficiaries of this bursary to have pursued medical studies, among others that have pursued disciplines such as dentistry and radiography.

“I initially wanted to become a police officer, but assisting my dad Donald, who was an active first aider in the Genadendal community, during medical emergencies sparked my inter-

est in medicine. This interest became even stronger when I was about nine years old, after witnessing a local police officer with a severe head injury who, at the time, was unable to receive immediate medical attention.”

MEDICAL FIELD IN THE BLOOD

Being raised in a close-knit family committed to serving others clearly cemented Abrahams’ calling to pursue a medical career. In addition to her father’s involvement in community first aid her brother also works in the medical field and her mother cares for the elderly.

Abrahams has set her heart on becoming a cardiothoracic surgeon but she remains open to exploring different specialist fields. Once qualified she hopes to return to her community to make a meaningful impact, using her specialist surgical skills.

“I definitely see my future as a doctor here in South Africa,

and I would love to work in the Overberg region and give back to the communities there.

“The bursary has meant a great deal to me and my family. It has enabled us all to see that the dream I’ve had since primary school is truly possible and achievable.”

Asked by Hermanus Times how she had heard of the bursary programme, Abrahams said: “A primary-school teacher’s son was also funded and he also studied medicine. Another teacher encouraged me to apply for the bursary and so I did.”

Despite an incredibly busy schedule she told the newspaper she also makes time for dancing, drawing, hiking and running, which she started a few months ago. “It not only keeps me fit, but I need to be strong for the patients as well.

“People must look for opportunities. There are a lot of opportunities out there. Many young people are so discouraged, but

each of us has something within us and if we strive and set our hearts on becoming something bigger, it is definitely possible.”

“To support a young person that shows such passion and commitment to helping others and her community is very encouraging for us,” said Sinovuyo Choco, Economic Development Specialist at Klipheuwel Wind Farm.

“We can’t wait to see what Dawn achieves in the future and look forward to following her journey as she works towards becoming a doctor.”

Since its inception in 2016, this bursary programme, which covers tuition, accommodation, travel and study materials, has supported students from Genadendal, Caledon, Grabouw, Bot River and Hermanus, investing not only in education, but in the future of these communities.

Anneke Steenkamp, the passionate and quietly determined winemaker behind the boutique Walker Bay Estate Stanford, has done it again. Two gleaming gold medals from one of the wine world's most demanding and prestigious competitions - the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles - now find their home in the Stanford cellar, adding yet another glittering chapter to a remarkable and growing story of international recognition.

Anneke told Hermanus Times that she was very surprise after receiving the news. "The results came to me in the form of an email congratulating me on our medals. At the time I was busy working on my barrels in the Cellar. My reaction was total joy as I felt the Cabernet Sauvignon was a particularly worthy winner of the gold medal and had in the past not received the recognition it deserves,"Anneke said.

According to her this achievement means so much to her and her team: "All the hard work we have put into this very small farm is getting the recognition it deserves on the global stage. It really is a David and Goliath story. We are a small farm, boutique size , we use the grapes we produce to make the best wine we possibly can and unlike the large wine producers we are unable to pick and choose the grapes we want to use for our medal competition wines."

The fact that the wines are blind tasted is huge to them. She explained: "So many wines are judged by the look, prestige and name of the estate rather than the true quality of the wine. For a wine maker to have a panel of top wine professionals award gold medals to Walker Bay Estate is vindication that we are a consistently quality focused wine produc-

Walker Bay Estate's gold medal wines are the Cabernet Sauvignon 2022. "This wine has a really wonderful nose. It smells intensely of plum fruit and even in the barrels one of my friends and mentor, Theo Brink, was tasting with me and getting excited as to how amazing this wine is.

skins in tact," Anneke said. According to her the Syrah is quite a complex wine. It's a very elegant wine not at any stage overpowering. "You can pick up aromas of ripe fruit and even liquorice on the nose and that complexity is balanced right through to the finish."

Anneke is particularly proud of the Cabernet Sauvignon. She explained: "It now has the recognition it deserves. It clearly reflects and expresses the terroir unique to this region rather than tasting generic. It was such a pleasure making this wine because the grapes were just so right at time of harvest. Everything was perfect. This wine and the Syrah are the hallmark of, I believe, a well managed vineyard. Having the patience to harvest when the grapes are ready not when other wine makers in the region are harvesting; to take extra time in the cellar. To do things slowly with extra care and time."

VINEYARD AND WINE STORY

Anneke joined Walker Bay Estate in July 2021, after a period out of the wine making industry and according to her she was eager to be back on a farm. "I had grown up on a wine and fruit farm and this was a dream come true. I always wanted to do the whole vineyard and wine story and more than anything I enjoy the autonomy that this role gives

me although we are busy recruiting a person into marketing. I think what has surprised me is the support the owners have given me to take the reins and run with things. I also have an amazing young assistant, Devonte, who is totally reliable and hard working and a team that are willing to come in and harvest before the sun has risen on the farm. What was it like stepping into that allencompassing role, and what has surprised you most about the journey?"

For her to work alongside the mentorship of respected industry figure Theo Brink is a game changer. "His experience is immense and under his guidance I have learned how crucial it is to perform certain vineyard practices and harvest at optimum ripeness. He has helped me enormously on this journey to gold medal wine production."

As a female winemaker running a small boutique estate, Anneke feels that gender doesn't play a role nowadays in the wine industry. She said that when she started in the industry in 1991 it was much tougher and almost unheard of for a female wine maker to run a boutique wine farm. "I think as more females join the industry our efforts and perseverance have been rewarded ."

Anneke's wine philosophy is much like her personality: Patience; let nature take its course, be delicate in the handling of the grapes, respect the purity of the fruit but recognise that wine making is an art. She believes that the future for the wine industry is promising and one of her dreams is that the quality wines they produce will turn into sales. "My dream for this estate is that the we can continue to use the revenue to invest in the farm. Wine farming is expensive, you need deep pockets and if you don't have them you need to farm smartly."

Boer van Grabouw glo jongboere waarborg die toekoms

Richard Hutton-Squire (40), ’n boer van die Elgin-Grabouwomgewing, glo dat jongboere boerdery se toekoms gaan waarborg. “Jongboere is baie belangrik in die lang termyn. Ek het geleer dat dit wat jy insit, is wat jy uitkry en dit is waarom dit belangrik is om ure en moeite in jou boerdery te sit. Dit klink dalk nie lekker nie, maar as jy na die resultate kyk, is dit die moeite werd,” het Richard gesê. Dié belowende boer, wat ’n inspirasie vir ander is, is verlede week in die Paarl tydens die Agri Wes-Kaap-Santam se Jongboer-gala-aand as die WesKaap se Jongboer van die Jaar aangewys. Hy was veral in sy noppies

toe die Wes-Kaapse minister van landbou, Ivan Meyer, die trofee persoonlik aan hom oorhandig het. Nou, as provinsiale wenner, dring hy deur na die nasionale Jongboer van die Jaar-kompetisie.

Richard boer met passie en toewyding met appels en pere – gewasse wat noukeurige bestuur, tegniese kennis en langtermynbeplanning vereis.

Volgens hom het sy deelname aan hierdie kompetisie nie net sy landboukundige vaardigheid bewys nie, maar ook sy leierskapskwaliteite en visie vir die toekoms van die Suid-Afrikaanse landbou.

“Jong boere is baie belangrik in die lang termyn – hulle is

die toekoms, die hoop en ook ’n inspirasie vir ander eerstegenerasieboere,” het hy gesê. Agri-Wes-Kaap het ook weer eens die belangrikheid van die landbousektor beklemtoon: “Die Wes-Kaap is die ruggraat van Suid-Afrika se landbousektor en lewer ’n betekenisvolle bydrae tot die land se voedselsekerheid en uitvoerverdienste. Hierdie dinamiese provinsie is die tuiste van ’n verskeidenheid bedrywe – van vrugte- en wynboerdery tot graan, groente en vee. Tog staar die bedryf ’n kritieke uitdaging in die gesig – die vergrysingsprofiel van boere en die noodsaaklikheid om ’n nuwe geslag landboukundiges te betrek en te behou.”

Nooit te oud om te leer nie

’n Mens is nooit te oud om iets nuut en interessant te leer nie. Dit was gewis die geval toe die Bredasdorp­tak van die Vrouelandbouvereniging (VLV) onlangs ’n baie interessante werksessie oor Mountmellick­borduurwerk aangebied het.

Dié borduurwerk het, soos die naam aandui, in die vroeë 1800’s in Mountmellick, Ierland, ontstaan om tydens die Nywerheidsrewolusie aan vroue en meisies die geleentheid te gee om ’n vaardigheid aan te leer.

Dr. Erna Visser van die Gansbaai­tak het Madelé Burger van die Bredasdorp­tak bygestaan. Mountmellick­borduurwerk is tradisioneel wit­op­wit, maar die artikel waaraan die VLV­lede gaan werk, behels kleur en ’n verskeidenheid borduursteke. Letty­Ann Möller, die voorsitter van die Bredasdorp­tak, verduidelik: “Die artikel waaraan die lede gaan werk, is ’n kussing

van minstens 30x30 cm en dit vereis skakerings van ’n kleur borduurgare op materiaal van enige agtergrondkleur. Dit vereis ’n kombinasie van nommer­vyf­ en ­agt­borduurgare vir ’n verskeidenheid opgehewe borduursteke. Minstens ses verskillende borduursteke moet ingespan word, wat die Mountmellickborduursteek insluit.”

Möller sê die vroue wat die sessie bygewoon het, het dit geweldig interessant en leersaam gevind. Verskeie vroue van die VLV se Sirkel Overberg het ook die werksessie bygewoon.

“Die vroue is baie kreatief, dus gaan die eindproduk gewis iets wees om na uit te sien,” sê Möller.

Hermanus-tak leer in Mei baie

Mei was ’n bedrywige maand vir die Hermanus-tak van die Vrouelandbouvereniging (VLV). Nie net het hulle interessante sprekers tydens hulle maandelikse byeenkoms gehad nie, maar ook ’n geldinsamelingstaptog onderneem.

Tydens die leefstylvergadering het die oudpredikantsvrou Annarie Nel die opening waargeneem. Sy het vertel van die moeilike tye waardeur sy en haar gesin gegaan het en dat die bak van suurdeegbrood deel van hul genesingsproses was. Vriende uit Noorweë het ’n suurdeegplantjie aan hulle geskenk en die hele gesin het begin brood bak. Annarie het ’n suurdeegplantjie saamgebring vir iemand wat wil probeer om suurdeegbrood te bak.

Rita Louw, wat die klavierbegeleiding tydens die konferensie in Maart gedoen het, was die gasspreker. Sy het oor laslappiewerk gepraat en haar spreekbeurt begin deur ’n gedig oor laslappies voor te lees.

Haar besonderse bont uitrusting het sy van afvallappe gemaak en sy het verskeie ander artikels wat sy gemaak het, gewys. Dit het selfs ’n paar skoene, wat buiten die gekoopte sole heeltemal van lapwerk gemaak is – veters inkluis – ingesluit. Teen die einde van Mei het ’n groot groep lede aan Women Walk the World deelgeneem. Dit was ’n geldinsamelingsveldtog vir materiaal vir die maak van tulbande wat aan Hermanus­onkologie geskenk sal word. Oor die staptog sê Diana Lampbrechts: “Dit was ’n heerlike sonnige dag. Ons was gewapen met ’n bottel water elk en het van Milk­restaurant tot by Davie’s Pool gestap. Daar het ons koffie gedrink en toebroodjies en roompoffers geniet. Ons het elkeen twee pragtige proteas ontvang, wat deur C.J. Venter van die Escape­wynplaas geskenk is.”

Die Jongensklip­tak van die Vrouelandbouvereniging (VLV) het onlangs hul 71ste verjaardag met ’n vrouetee in die Rietpoel­saal gevier.

Die 90 gaste wat die geselligheid bygewoon het, is met ’n glasie vonkelwyn verwelkom, waarna hulle heerlike verversings geniet het. Francine Prins, die redakteur van die tydskrif Lig, was die gasspreker.

Die bestuur en al die lede het saamgewerk om die suksesvolle oggend te reël.”

Die Heidehof Tehuis vir Bejaardes se jaarlikse basaar is altyd ’n geleentheid om na uit te sien en hul mini-basaar is einde Mei in die NG kerkCaledon se kerksaal gehou.

Behalwe dat dié keer geen vleis of vleisprodukte te koop was nie, was al die ander basaarlekkernye daar, waaronder koek, pannekoek, vars blomme en plante, vars groente en vrugte, brei- en hekelware en natuurlik die immergewilde basaarpoeding. Gaste kon met ’n koppie varsgebroude

koffie ontspan en heerlik met ou vriende gesels, want by ’n basaar loop ’n mens mos altyd mense raak wat jy lanklaas gesien het. Die kinders kon hul gesigte laat verf – ’n aktiwiteit wat altyd baie gewild is.

Esther Möller, die uitvoerende hoof van Heidehof, sê: “Ons was verras met die opkoms, ten spyte van moeiliker ekonomiese tye. Ons waardeer mense se goeie gesindheid en ruim ondersteuning. Die ondersteuning uit die gemeenskap het ons opnuut herinner dit neem werklik ’n gemeenskap om te sorg vir dié wat vir ons gesorg het.”

“Elke aankoop, skenking, uur se vrywillige diens, gebed en daad van omgee het gehelp om ’n betekenisvolle verskil in die lewe van ons inwoners te maak. Namens die inwoners, personeel en bestuurskomitee sê ek baie dankie vir u betrokkenheid, vertroue en ondersteuning,” sê Möller.

Behalwe vir al die heerlike produkte wat te koop aangebied is, was lootjies met fantastiese pryse ook te koop. Aangesien die lootjietrekking op 30 Junie sal plaasvind, is daar nog tyd om lootjies by Heidehof se ontvangs te koop.

Drie jong leerders van Swartberg Primêr het onlangs goed in hul onderskeie sportsoorte gevaar.

Shandre Frans, ’n 11-jarige graad vyf-leerder, is onlangs in die Overbergskaakspan opgeneem om aan die Wes-Kaap-skoletoernooi deel te neem. (“Jong skaakspeler blink uit.” Hermanus Times 1 April 2026)

Die Wes-Kaap-skaaktoernooi vir primêre skole het op 16 en 17 Mei in Gansbaai plaasgevind met verskillende Wes-Kaap-streke wat deelgeneem het. Shandre het drie uit ses rondes gewen en alhoewel sy nie ’n medalje verower het nie, het sy ’n sertifikaat van bywoning ontvang. Keano Plaatjies en De-Quin Henson, albei 13 jaar oud en graad sewe-leerders, is in die Boland-o.13-rugbyakademiespan ingesluit. Hulle het tussen 5 en 6 Junie oefenkampe in Porterville bygewoon. Hulle het op 12 en 13 Junie aan ’n toernooi in Oudtshoorn deelgeneem. Die volgende oefenkamp is op 25 Junie in Rawsonville, wat op 26 Junie deur ’n petteseremonie gevolg sal word. Op 28 Junie vertrek hulle na Bloemfontein vir die groot toernooi. Die seuns word afgerig deur Dwaine Erasmus. Brian Pedro is die hulpafrigter.

The four kings of Open Fours

Hermanus Bowling Club had every reason to celebrate this week as the dynamic fours combination of Gavin Carter, Edmund Els, Hannes Nel and Stanley Chong delivered a sterling performance at the prestigious Boland Open Fours — walking away with well-deserved silver medals after a thrilling run to the final. The quartet showed grit, composure and class throughout the competition, navigating their way through what

is widely regarded as one of the most competitive bowls tournaments in the region. When it mattered most, on the biggest stage, they delivered — and the Hermanus bowling community could not be prouder.

While gold may have narrowly eluded them on the day, their silver medal performance is a testament to the exceptional talent and teamwork that continues to grow within the club.

Vrouerugby is baie gesond

Dit is hoe verskeie rugbykenners voel nadat die o.18-Boland-meisiespan onlangs aangewys is. Die meisies gaan van 6-11 Julie in Gqeberha aan ’n toernooi deelneem. Altesaam 16 van die 23 meisies wat vir die toernooi gekies is, is van die Overberg.

Vir baie van die meisies is Aseza Hele, wat onder haar spanmaats as “Blommie” bekendstaan, ’n rolmodel. Een van die spelers vertel dat iemand soos Blommie, wat vir die Springbokke speel, altyd vriendelik is en haar nederige persoonlikheid is iets waarna baie opkyk. “Aseza is iemand wat in elke wedstryd haar alles gee. Dit is lekker om te weet een van ons eie vroue dra die groen-en-goud,” het een van die spelers gesê. Boland-vrouerugby is oor die algemeen baie gesond en die Boland-vroue vaar jaar ná jaar net beter. Onder die afrigting van Thomas Chowles doen nie net die Boland-vroue goed nie, maar die plaaslike span wat hy ook afrig, Walkerbay van Hermanus, is tans eerste op Boland-vrouerugby se punteleer nadat hulle nog glad nie ’n wedstryd verloor het nie. Die tweede ronde skop Saterdag 20 Junie af.
