Botsing eis gesin

Min het die Hermanus-gemeenskap geweet dat die botsing verlede Dinsdag (7 Julie) op die N2 tussen Heidelberg en Riversdal die dorp so gaan ruk.

Die botsing reg van voor tussen ’n Toyota-minibus en ’n sportnuts voertuig het die oggend omstreeks 10:00 gebeur. Vyf mense is in die voorval dood en minstens 10 beseer.

Dit was egter die Facebook-inskrywings op die Laer- en Hoërskool Hermanus wat die dorp geruk het. “Ons dink met diepe medelye aan die familie en vriende van die Van Jaarsveldtgesin, wat die groot verlies van Rudi, Lara, Izak en Ruan moet verwerk. Ons dra in die besonder Izak se Laerskool Hermanus- graad-6-maats en Ruan (matriek 2024) se vriende in ons gedagtes en gebede op en bid vir krag vir almal wat vir hulle lief was,” het die beheerliggaam, skoolhoof en personeel van die Hoërskool Hermanus gesê.

Die Laerskool Hermanus het op sy Facebookblad die volgende geplaas: Dit is met diepe hartseer dat ons u in kennis stel van die tragiese afsterwe van een van ons graad-6-leerders, Izak van Jaarsveldt, en sy gesin. Dit is met dié Facebook-inskrywings dat die meeste inwoners besef het die geliefde Van Jaarsveldt- gesin was van Hermanus. Rudi was die bestuurder van Pet & Pool by die Gateway-sentrum en sy liefde vir sy werk, medemens en diere het geen perke geken nie. Haws het op sy Facebook-blad gesê Rudi was meer as net ’n ondersteuner

Al is die oorsaak van die botsing nog nie bekend gemaak nie, het die Heidelberg-polisie ’n saak van strafbare manslag aanhangig gemaak.

OP PAD NA OUPA EN OUMA IN KARATARA Volgens bronne was die Van Jaarsveldt- gesin op pad na Rudi se ouers, wat in Karatara woon – ’n klein dorpie naby Sedgefield – toe die ongeluk gebeur het. Rudi en sy vrou, Lara, is op die toneel oorlede terwyl Izak en Ruan in die Riversdal-hospitaal opgeneem is. Izak is later die dag oorlede terwyl Ruan na die Tygerberg-hospitaal

oorgeplaas is. Hy is die volgende dag (Woensdag) oorlede.

Volgens die familie voel alles steeds so onwerklik, maar wat vir hulle vertroosting bring, is die feit dat hulle almal saam gesterf het. Volgens hulle was die Van Jaarsveldts ’n hegte gesin wat alles saam gedoen het.

’n Gedenkdiens word Vrydag (17 Julie) om 10:00 by die NG kerk Onrusrivier gehou.

• ’n Passasier van die minibus, Michele Lombard (34), is ook op die toneel dood. Michele was die afgelope 15 jaar ’n inwoner van die Eljada-sorgsentrum in Oudtshoorn.

• The Hermanus community was left devastated following a fatal head-on collision on the N2 between Heidelberg and Riversdale on Tuesday 7 July, which claimed the lives of the entire Van Jaarsveldt family.

Rudi and Lara van Jaarsveldt, together with their sons, Izak (Grade 6, Laerskool Hermanus) and Ruan (Hoërskool Hermanus, Class of 2024), were travelling to visit family in Karatara near Sedgefield when their vehicle collided with a Toyota minibus at approximately 10:00. Rudi and Lara died at the scene. Izak and Ruan were transported to Riversdale Hospital, where Izak later passed away. Ruan was transferred to Tygerberg Hospital and died the following day.

Rudi was well-known as the manager of Pet & Pool at Gateway Centre and a valued supporter of HAWS.

A memorial service will be held on Friday 17 July at 10:00 at the NG kerk Onrusrivier.

The Heidelberg Police have opened a case of culpable homicide.

Raka-familie verloor held

Sy was ’n steunpilaar, ’n moederhen, die rots van die familie en welbekend in die omgewing.

Elna Dreyer van Raka-wyne is op 1 Julie oorlede en volgens haar familie is sy op Raka, “die plaas wat sy en haar gesin die afgelope 45 jaar hul tuiste noem”, oorlede.

Elna was ’n merkwaardige vrou en saam met haar eggenoot, Piet, het hulle vier kinders grootgemaak. “My ma se liefde vir ons het geen perke geken nie en solank haar kinders gelukkig was, was sy gelukkig,” het Jorika Visser, Elna se dogter, gesê.

Net so lief soos wat sy vir haar kinders was, was haar agt kleinkinders ook haar grootste trots. “My ma het altyd gesê haar kleinkinders is haar grootste rykdom en sy het vir hulle geleef.”

Elna het in die Tankwa-Karoo grootgeword en op Middelpos skoolgegaan. Ná skool het sy regte studeer en as staatsaanklaer gewerk. Sy het Piet by die landdroshof ontmoet. Hoewel hulle albei hul loopbane in die regswese be -

gin het, het Piet sy passie gevolg en ’n kommersiële visserman geword.

Nadat hulle hul huis in Houtbaai verkoop het, het hulle met ’n viertonvragmotor na Remhoogte (nou Raka-wyne) buite Stanford verhuis. Terwyl Piet uit die hawens van Hermanus en Gansbaai met sy boot, Raka , vis gevang het, het Elna die boerdery bestuur. Wanneer Piet ná ’n lang tyd op see teruggekeer het, het sy getrou met die vragmotor by die hawe gewag om hom en sy bemanning veilig huis toe te neem.

Met haar kenmerkende deursettingsvermoë het Elna die boerdery stap vir stap uitgebou. Sy het met skape en ’n paar beeste geboer en later ook sitrus aangeplant. Saam met haar kinders het sy gereeld Saterdae nartjies van deur tot deur in Stanford en Mount Pleasant verkoop.

Elna was lief vir taal, kultuur en boeke. Sy het vas geglo “kennis is mag en maak deure oop”. Haar wye algemene kennis, opregte belangstelling in mense en hartlike glimlag het haar met gemak met enigiemand laat gesels.

Count our Blue Cranes 24-27 July

South Africa's national bird is in trouble - and the Overstrand community has a vital role to play in understanding just how serious the situation has become.

After a gap of nearly two decades, the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT), in partnership with the International Crane Foundation, is reviving South Africa's national crane census from 24-27 July - and local residents, farmers and birders are being called on to help.

The census comes at a critical moment for the Overberg. Recent EWT data reveals that Blue Crane numbers in the region declined by a staggering 44% between 2011 and 2025, a drop severe enough to see South Africa's beloved national bird uplisted to "Vulnerable" on the Red Data List.

Sy was ’n bekende en geliefde figuur in die Overberg-gemeenskap.

Volgens Jorika het Elna elke week daarna uitgesien om Hermanus Times en ander koerante te lees. “Wanneer sy haar kinders Vrydae by die koshuis in Caledon gaan haal het, was die koerant altyd een van die eerste goed in haar inkopiemandjie. Sy het dikwels iemand raakgeloop en gesê: ‘Ek ken jou nie, maar ek het al van jou gelees’,” het Jorika vertel.

Volgens Jorika het Elna ook die eerste wingerde van Raka aangeplant en saam met Piet die bemarking van hul wyne aangepak. “Sy het ’n groot rol in die die familieonderneming gespeel en saam het hulle ons in die onderneming ingelei. Met verloop van tyd het elkeen sy eie plek in die onderneming gevind,” sê Jorika.

Jorika vertel hartseer dat haar ma waarheid aan die spreekwoord “Agter elke suksesvolle man staan ’n sterk vrou,” gegee het. “Nie net vir my pa nie, maar ook vir ons kinders.” Elna word op 19 Julie begrawe. Skakel 028 341 0676 vir nog inligting.

Teens rescued after capsize

Two teenagers escaped injury after their double sea kayak capsized off Hardebaai in Onrus last Wednesday. Following reports that they were in distress at sea, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) responde to the incident.

The incident occurred at 10:29 on 8 July when NSRI Hermanus crew on duty "were activated following eyewitness reports of two males appearing to be in distress" offshore of Hardebaai. This is according to Neil de Vries, the NSRI Hermanus duty coxswain.

"NSRI rescue swimmers arrived on the scene. We found two local male teenagers swimming towards the shore, with their double sea kayak

capsized and floating offshore," de Vries said. "They reached the rocky shoreline where our crew assisted them ashore."

The 17-year-old teenagers had life jackets on and are reported to have had a bit of a cold from the swim. However, they did not suffer any injuries and required no medical care. They were subsequently fetched by family, and warmed up. "Their sea kayak drifted ashore and NSRI recovered it and delivered it to their home," said de Vries. "The family has thanked NSRI for recovering their sea kayak." NSRI further commended the eyewitness for recognising the teenagers in distress and "raising the alarm".

Bradley Cecil Jasmin is expected to return to the Grabouw Magistrates’ Court on 22 July for a bail application after a K9 sniffer dog uncovered R2,1 million worth of Mandrax during a routine vehicle checkpoint on the N2 near Grabouw.

On Thursday 9 July, the 61-year-old suspect was randomly stopped during a checkpoint and the K9 narcotics dog “reacted positively to something in a hidden compartment” which led them to the drugs inside his silver Audi. This is according to the pronvincial spokesperson for the Hawks, Lieutenant Colonel Siyabulela Vukabi.

Separation can affect emotions and finances where a couple shares a rented property. While paperwork may be the last priority during a breakup, failing to update lease and ownership arrangements can create lasting legal and financial consequences.

A tenant who moves out should ensure that the lease is amended immediately. Until the landlord releases that person from the agreement, they may remain liable for rent and other obligations, even if they no longer occupy the property. Jasmin, who is from Durban, was allegedly found with 35 thousand Mandrax tablets concealed in the hidden compartments throughout his vehicle.

He had his first court appearance on Monday 13 July where he elected his own attorney before the matter was postponed, according to Western Cape regional spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Eric Ntabazalila.

During his first appeareance in court, the defence stated that the accused had medical problems.

the Cape Town K9 Unit acted on intelligence when they conducted a routine vehicle checkpoint in Grabouw on the N2 Highway,” said Vukabi. Jasmin was subsequently arrested on drug trafficking charges.

Meanwhile, in April 2024, a vehicle from the Eastern Cape travelling to Cape Town, was stopped at Sir Lowry’s Pass. The car was found to be carrying R2 million worth of Mandrax which was also hidden in the back of the car.

In Novermber 2023, a 34-year-old suspect was found in possession of R2,7 million worth of the drug during a truck stop in Strand. The drugs were concealed in a hidden compartment within the truck. However, there are no reports indicating any links between these separate drug bust incidents.

Eight incidents, multiple arrests

A string of thefts, robberies and shoplifting incidents resulted in multiple arrests across eight seperate cases throughout June.

Hermanus Public Protection (HPP) officers, with the help of CCTV operators and the police, identified, tracked down and helped apprehend the suspects in a month marked by persistent property crime.

The multiple arrests involved suspects linked to robbery, copper theft, shoplifting and possession of suspected stolen property. All suspects ended up in police custody.

Arrests were made through a combination of CCTV monitoring, foot patrols and rapid coordination with the police, according to HPP.

One of the most serious incidents occured shortly before 04:00 on 14 June when an HPP CCTV operator spotted four men allegedly robbing pedestrians in Zwelihle.

“[The operator] monitored them and police were notified of the incident,” said Marius Boshoff, Hermanus Branch Manager for Fidelity ADT, who supplies the staff and manages the contract. The responding officers were directed to where the suspects were.

“As they approached the males

they started running away. They were able to catch one of the suspects and he was arrested for common robbery.”

Five days later, on the 19th, an HPP Special Response Unit (SRU) officer stopped a suspicious-looking man with a bicycle.

Boshoff related: “The officer stopped the male and questioned him about the bicycle and where he had got it. He replied he had got it from premises nearby. The HPP officer then took the male back to the property and the service provider, whose building it was, was contacted.”

Further investigation revealed that the bicycle had allegedly been stolen from a nearby construction site, resulting in the man’s arrest for possession of suspected stolen property.

On 22 June routine patrols led officers to two men pushing a trolley containing copper.

When the officers stopped the males to question them, they noticed that the men had copper in their possession.

“The officers took them to the site where they had claimed they had got the copper from,” Boschoff explained, “but on arrival they changed their story and the workers nearby confirmed they had never seen these men or the copper.”

The two suspects were subsequently taken to Hermanus Police Station where they were arrested for theft of copper.

Retail crime also kept officers busy throughout the month.

Two youngsters were tracked by CCTV operators on 24 June and accused of stealing clothing worth R4 120 from a shop in the Hermanus CBD.

They were detained within minutes and handed over to the police after the shop manager had confirmed a criminal case would be opened.

Five more youngsters were arrested on 27 June, in response to another shoplifting complaint. Law Enforcement and HPP members pursued the group, recovering stolen LED fairy lights, masks and a clock. Although the suspects were handed over to the police, the shop owner declined to open a criminal case because of their ages and they were released into the care of their parents.

In the last shoplifting incident, which took place on 29 June, HPP patrollers received a tip-off by a member of the public about two suspects who had stolen four R360 tracksuit tops from a shop.

Two suspects were subsequently arrested.

“We are incredibly proud of all HPP members,” said Boshoff.

Saterdag 8 Augustus bied nog ’n musiekhoogtepunt: Die Wasgoedlynproduksies en Die Coffee Snobs in die Grobbelaarsaal – ’n unieke samevoeging van kunstenaars wat beloof om feesgees op ’n hoogtepunt te bring.

Buiten die musiekprogram bied die fees ook komedies, dramas, kinderprogramme en debatte, onder meer Die Kaalkop Waarheid (DKW), Akkedis en Churchil Naudé, wat saam met Die Wasgoedlynproduksies op die verhoog verskyn. Die Kalfiefees vier vanjaar sy 26ste jaar en het hom stewig gevestig as ’n fees wat kunstenaars van oor die land heen byeenbring.

Pawsitive Choices at Winter Camp

Altogether 84 children between the ages of five and 12 got an unexpected lesson in empathy, kindness and animal behaviour when the Hermanus Animal Welfare Society (Haws) brought its Pawsitive Choices programme to the Hawston Winter Camp on 19 July.

Three 45-minute sessions were delivered by Haws facilitators Clair Tuttelberg, Sheetal Gordhan, Razah Takesure and Cassidy Witbooi - each supported by one of three specially selected Haws Heroes: Amelia the dog, Brody the dog, and Kitty the cat. The animals were central to the experience, giving children the opportunity to safely observe, interact with and ask questions about real animals while learning to read their body language and respond with kindness.

Guided by the principles "Look. Think. Act." and "Kind Hands, Kind Feet, Kind Hearts," children became what Haws calls "animal detectives" - using games, storytelling, singing and hands-on interaction to learn how animals communicate their feelings, needs and boundaries.

Each Haws Hero brought their own story to the session. Amelia, a three-year-old dog surrendered to Haws with 12 puppies in April, surprised her handlers by blossom-

ing in front of the children - calm, playful and confident despite being naturally nervous. Brody, a 14-month-old found near Abagold in October 2025, greeted children with gentle licks and boundless energy. Kitty, a gentle black-and-white cat who has become a beloved shelter favourite, felt nervous on the day - but rather than disrupting the session, her hesitation became a powerful teaching moment, showing children how to recognise and respect an animal's boundaries.

"When children learn to recognise how an animal is feeling and respond appropriately, they develop empathy that extends beyond animals," said a Haws spokesperson. "Those same skills strengthen relationships with family, friends and their wider community."

The Hawston Winter Camp is a community initiative run in partnership with the Hawston Library, YeBoneers, Thusong, APD and Hawston Primary School. Organiser Belinda May is always seeking volunteers and donations to support the programme and can be contacted at bmay@overstrand.gov.za.

For 25 young footballers from Zwelihle, the journey of sacrifice, determination and unwavering belief has culminated in the biggest achievement of the club’s young history. Mighty Stars Football Club (FC) has qualified to represent the Overberg at the South African Football Association (Safa) Western Province Hollywoodbets Regional Playoffs.

Now, financial challenges threaten to keep them away from the tournament. But the team will not go down without a fight and is appealing to the community to make dreams of youthful football stars a reality.

The team’s senior men’s squad will represent Safa Overberg in the tournament where only the top-performing and best clubs compete at this level.

The Hermanus bowling team gave a strong account of themselves in the Boland Open Mixed Fours Final but ultimately had to settle for the runners-up position after falling to a determined Robertson side.

The Boland Final was held in Worcester over the weekend.

The Open Mixed Fours competition - contested by teams of two men and two ladies - produced a closely fought final, with Robertson claiming the title through the combination of Mark Beviss-Challinor, Callie van der Merwe, Mariska van Deventer and Lesley

Representing Hermanus in the final were Laurie Keevy, Koos Hugo, Sonja Kruger and John Immelman, who can be proud of their performance in reaching the showpiece event of the Boland competition.

While the result will sting, the Hermanus quartet's run to the final is a testament to the growing strength of lawn bowls in the town and the dedication of its players. Reaching a Boland final is no small achievement, and the experience gained will no doubt serve the team well in future competitions.

With more than 100 registered players across different development structures, Mighty Stars FC’s players will have the opportunity to showcase their talent against some of the best teams in the Western Cape and “brings us one step closer to promotion to the ABC Motsepe League”, which is the country’s third division of professional football.

The club and all of the Overberg will be represented by 25 players and five technical officials. “As a community club we operate with limited financial resources,” Wogqoyi said. But participating in the tournament “would expose our players to a higher level of competition, helping them improve their skills and increasing thir chances of being identified by professional clubs.”

It is more than what goes on the field for the youth squad of Mighty Stars FC. Off the field the experience promotes “discipline, teamwork, confidence, leadership and personal growth while inspiring young people to pursue positive opportunities through sport.”

In the Zwelihle community the club is a safe haven for young people that provides a structured environment where young people use football to develop and stay engaged in positive activities while encouraging healthy lifestyles. It also helps reduce their social challenges by giving the players a sense of belonging, purpose and hope for a brighter future.
