Whale Coast Mall under the spotlight With the Overstrand and especially Hermanus attracting not only residents from all over South Africa, but also the world, it is not surprising that investors are interested in the town. Business Tech published an article in September last year that the Overstrand has quietly emerged as one of Africa’s fastest-growing millionaire hotspots, with Hermanus establishing itself as a magnet for wealthy property buyers seeking premium coastal investments, according to the latest “Africa Wealth Report” published annually by international wealth advisory firm Henley & Partners in collaboration with New World Wealth. The comprehensive study revealed that Hermanus and its surrounding areas are attracting high-net-worth individuals at a pace that outstrips any other region in the country, positioning this picturesque coastal town as a standout destination in South Africa’s luxury property market and cementing its status as a preferred enclave for the continent’s affluent elite. It is therefore no surprise that the Whale Coast Mall has been in the sights of investors. The very same Business Tech announced last week that Hosken Consolidated Investments (HCI) is selling

its 65% stake in Whale Coast Village Mall for R600 million. The shopping center’s ownership structure includes Dorpstraat Properties, Sandbaai Development Trust, and retail giant Shoprite Checkers among its stakeholders. Through its subsidiary HCI-Whale Coast Village Proprietary Limited (HCI-WCV), the investment group has now finalised agreements to offload its controlling 65% interest in the property. Two entities will split the acquisition, with Whale Coast Capital Investments Proprietary Limited purchasing a 40% stake and Whale Coast Village Mall Proprietary Limited securing the remaining 25% portion of the divested shares. HCI maintains an indirect 80% shareholding in HCI-WCV, meaning the parent company will benefit substantially from the R600 million transaction. The deal’s proceeds are earmarked primarily for debt settlement, with approximately R328 million allocated to clear outstanding obligations to the subsidiary’s lenders, while remaining funds will flow back to HCI-WCV shareholders, including the parent company. However, the transaction remains conditional on several regulatory approvals, most notably clearance from competition authorities, before the deal can be finalised.

Hawston Business Chamber celebrates year of growth The Mayor of the Overstrand Municipality, Archie Klaas delivered an inspiring address at the Hawston Local Business Chamber (HLBC) year-end function. The HLBC concluded a remarkable year of growth and community engagement with a celebratory event held in December that highlighted significant achievements in business development and municipal partnerships. Since its establishment in April 2024, the chamber has been instrumental in driving conversations around business development in Hawston, with one of their most notable successes being the Herriesbaai short-term occupancy agreement secured with the municipality. The chamber’s year-end celebration featured Klaas as guest-speaker, who

A highlight of the event was the certificate ceremony recognising all directors within the chamber for their dedicated service and leadership throughout the year. The formal recognition underscored the commitment of local business leaders to driving economic development in their community. The celebration continued with a community lunch where chamber members, community representatives, and the mayor gathered to acknowledge the chamber’s generous contributions to various stakeholders throughout 2024. Since its inception in April, the HLBC has consistently supported local initiatives through donations and community partnerships. The successful partnership between the business chamber and municipal leadership demonstrates the potential for collaborative development when community stakeholders work toward shared goals. Brandstigting dalk die oorsaak van verwoesting Die brande wat al meer as 38 000 hektaar in die Overberg verwoes het, die lewe van ’n tier by Panthera Big Cat Sanctuary buite Stanford geëis en menige inwoner dakloos gelaat het, het die aandag van baie gelok. Baie inwoners het op Facebook gereageer oor die moontlike oorsake van die brand, maar onlangse bewyse wat deur die Overstrand-munisipaliteit ontvang is, blyk dat die vernietigende vlaag brande wat die streek teister, die handewerk van brandstigters kan wees. Dit volg ná die inhegtenisneming van drie verdagtes en die onlangse ontdekking van verdagte toerusting naby brandgebiede. Die jongste voorval was op Maandagaand (12 Januarie) toe ’n oplettende lid van die publiek ’n rookwolk naby die Stanford-begraafplaas opgemerk het. Danksy die getuie se vinnige reaksie is ’n 23-jarige vrou glo op heter daad betrap terwyl sy besig was om ’n vuur aan te steek, saam met twee manlike medeplig-

tiges van onderskeidelik 15 en 20 jaar oud. “Hy het gesien hoe ’n vroulike verdagte oor ’n heining spring en het wetstoepassers onmiddellik ontbied terwyl hy self die vuur probeer blus het totdat die brandweer opgedaag het,” het die munisipale bestuurder van die OM, dr. Dean O’Neill, gesê. Die vroulike verdagte is ingevolge die Wet op Veld- en Bosbrande (Wet 101 van 1998) aangekla en het haar twee manlike medepligtigdes aan die owerhede uitgewys. Al drie verdagtes is tans in aanhouding by die Stanford-polisiekantoor. Wat die spanning verder verhoog het, was ’n petrolkan, wat tussen die fynbos by Blue Water Bay by Pearly Beach was, verlede week deur ’n ander oplettende inwoner ontdek is. Die Overstrand-munisipaliteit het in reaksie op die erns van die bedreiging ’n geldelike beloning aangekondig vir inligting wat tot die inhegtenisneming en suksesvolle vervolging van dié wat aan die brandstigting skuldig is, lei.

Devastation after tiger dies Devastating scenes unfolded in the Overstrand this past week with residents of Pearly Beach and Stanford having to evacuate and Panthera Big Cat Sanctuary left in the lurch. But it was the death of one of the tigers at Panthera that touched people’s hearts. Panthera said the following on their Facebook page: “With deep sadness, we must share that our beloved tiger, Rays, passed away yesterday (Sunday 11 January). As the flames approached with unimaginable speed, we managed to get him to his feeding camp, where he was darted and rushed to the clinic. Despite our efforts, the combination of massive smoke inhalation and the darting caused severe lung oedema and cardio-respiratory compromise. He went into a coma, and we can share that he peacefully drifted away as his heart took its final beat. There are no words to fully capture how we feel, and nothing seems enough to honour him.” It was a nightmare period for the staff and volunteers of Panthera. This big cat sanctuary near Stanford has been severely impacted by the active wildfire that escalated on Thursday 8 January, placing their team, animals and infrastructure at serious risk. In extremely challenging conditions, with thick smoke, near-zero visibility and flames spreading rapidly due to strong gusts of wind (up to 80km/h), the team worked urgently to move animals that were directly in the fire’s path to safety. “A specialist big cat veterinarian was on site providing urgent care, particularly for the most seriously affected animals. Depending on their needs, animals were housed in undamaged feeding camps, monitored at the on-site clinic after sedation and crating, or temporarily relocated to a nearby sanctuary. Further relocations may be required as assessments continue,” said co-founder Lizaene Cornwall on Friday. After the fire flared up again and the animals were again in danger, plans had to be made to keep the animals safe. “As many of you have read, we have had to

make the incredibly difficult and heartbreaking decision to relocate some of our animals to other sanctuaries. This was not a choice made lightly. There were many factors involved, but at the heart of it all was one simple truth: we must always do what is best for the animals in our care. Their safety and well-being will always come first. Our beautiful girls, Lei-ah and Elsa, have arrived safely at ADI Wildlife Sanctuary after more than 15 long hours on the road. “Knowing they are safe brings a measure of comfort during an otherwise emotional time. Overbergers veg saam teen vlamme Lise Beyers Die Overberg-streek het aan die begin van Januarie een van sy grootste beproewings in dekades beleef toe ’n als vernietigende veldbrand deur die kusgebied gejaag het. Dié verwoestende brande, wat so ernstig was dat dit as “vlak rooi” geklassifiseer is – die hoogste waarskuwingsvlak – het menige dorp bedreig, lewens ontwrig en gemeenskappe in uiterste nood saamgesnoer. Die eerste vlamme is op 4 Januarie naby die landingsbaan langs die R43, naby die rustige vakansiedorp Pearly Beach, opgemerk. Wat as ’n onskuldige veldbrand begin het, het baie vinnig in ’n veelvlakkige ramp ontaard toe sterk wind en uiterste droogte die vlamme onbeheersd aangeblaas het. Die brande het binne ’n paar dae gevaarlik naby huise en infrastruktuur gekom en inwoners sowel as vakansiegangers moes begin voorberei op moontlike ontruiming. Die nooddienste en brandbestryders van die Overberg, die Stad Kaapstad en Drakenstein is inderhaas gemobiliseer. Land- en lugspanne is geaktiveer in ’n wedloop teen tyd om die brande in uitmergelende 24-uur-skofte in die kiem te smoor. Hoewel die Pearly Beach-brand teen verlede Maandagoggend gelyk het of die situasie onder beheer was, het stormsterk wind Dinsdag die situasie vinnig laat vererger toe ’n vlammemuur direk op pad was na Pearly Beach, wat ’n noodsituasie veroorsaak het. Die vlamme het toe ook in die rigting van Elim en Buffeljags versprei en onderweg twee kothuise op die gasteplaas Klein Paradijs in puin gelê.

Die vernietiging het nie net natuurlewe nie, maar ook kritieke infrastruktuur, soos elektrisiteitslyne en watertoevoer, getref. Inwoners in Elim en groot dele van Kaap Agulhas het in algehele duisternis verkeer; kommunikasie was beperk en noodsaaklike dienste was onder druk. Die herstel van hierdie infrastruktuur – veral in afgeleë gebiede – het verdere uitdagings vir munisipaliteite en Eskom geskep, wat aanhoudend moes werk te midde van steeds aangetekende brande in die gebied. Die Duineveld-wildreservaat, wat tussen Pearly Beach en Uilkraalsmond geleë is, het ernstige skade aan sy unieke fynbos- en wildhabitatte gely, met duisende hektaar kosbare biodiversiteit wat verlore gegaan het. Elders, soos in Stanford, het ’n aparte brand ontstaan,

wat ’n ernstige bedreiging vir plaaslike ondernemings soos Raka Wines en die roofdierreservaat Panthera Africa ingehou het – laasgenoemde moes ander planne maan deur die verwydering van hul diere. Ten spyte van die omvang van die vernietiging het die ware storie van die Overstrand en Kaap Agulhas die afgelope week nie net in die woedende vlamme gesetel nie, maar in die uitsonderlike krag van gemeenskapsamewerking en deursettingsvermoë. Met die gevaar so naby soos nog nooit vantevore nie, het grondeienaars, plaaslike boere en inwoners hulself sonder huiwering aan die brandfronte geplaas, gewapen met bakkies met plaasbrandbestrydingstoerusting. Talle het dag en nag gehelp – nie net om hul eie eiendom te beskerm nie,

maar ook dié van bure en selfs onbekende inwoners. Vakansiegangers in die kusgebiede het ook ingespring om te help. Hierdie vrywilligers het ’n onskatbare bydrae gelewer om brandbane daar te stel en huise te beskerm. Terwyl die brandbestryders geworstel het om die vlamme in bedwang te kry, het die res van die gemeenskap nie op die kantlyn gestaan nie. Inwoners en vakansiegangers het saamgespan om kombuise oop te stel en etes aan brandbestryders te voorsien – dikwels vir dae aanmekaar sonder rus. Mense het waterbottels en energiedrankies tot op die vuurlyne aangedra, terwyl inwoners bondels toebroodjies en maaltye gemaak het. Hierdie logistieke optredes – heeltemal deur vrywilligers bestuur – het professionele ramphulpoptredes in doeltreffendheid en omvang geëwenaar. Finansiële en materiële skenkings het ingestroom en dié wat nie self kon help nie, het bygedra om seker te maak daar is genoeg hulpbronne vir almal. Dieper in die gemeenskap het die ware gees van ubuntu en naasteliefde gewys: Bure het bejaardes bygestaan waar hulle kon, medikasie aangedra en dies meer. Ook in Elim, waar die kragonderbreking die brand se impak vererger het, het ou gemeenskapsnetwerke gewys hoe gesinne mekaar in moeilike tye beskerm en ondersteun. Petro Matthews, die bestuurder van die gewilde Pearly Beach-oord, het vertel: “Ek het in 15 jaar nog nie so ’n verwoestende brand ervaar nie. Dit was ongelooflik om te sien hoe almal – inwoners en besoekers – saamstaan en tot die groter geheel iets bydra. Sonder hierdie saamstaan en opoffering kon die situasie rampspoedig gewees het.” Die ware helde van die brand was nie net die uniformdraers nie, maar ook gewone mans en vroue wat sonder enige verwagting van erkenning opgetree het. Die skade aan die streek se landbou, biodiversiteit en infrastruktuur sal maande – selfs jare – neem om volledig te herstel. In die nasleep van die ramp staan die gemeenskappe van die Overberg en Kaap Agulhas egter nie magteloos nie. Die solidariteit, deursettingsvermoë en mededeelsaamheid wat hier gewys is, bied hoop en dra die belofte – nes die veerkragtige fynbos wat uiteindelik sal herstel, sal hierdie gemeenskappe sterker en meer saamgebind as ooit uit die as van die vernietiging herrys. Namate die laaste smeulende kole geblus word en die gemeenskap weer kan begin asemhaal, bly die herinneringe van ’n gemeenskap wat sy eie redding geword het, steeds helder. Die les uit hierdie brande blyk duidelik: Wanneer die nood die hoogste is, blyk die mens se moed, saamstaan en medemenslikheid ’n krag te wees wat selfs in die aansig van verwoesting hoop bring.

SA has a huge maths crisis Maryke Swart

“We’ve seen Grade 1 learners move from struggling to count to confidently multiplying within weeks,” Shapiro noted. Through its non-profit arm, The Bundi Foundation, K2U trains tutors and provides resources to rural and disadvantaged schools. Results from recent interventions at Vulindlela Comprehensive Technical School show remarkable turnaround; learners once on the verge of failure now achieve distinctions in the K2U taught concepts after three-months remedial programmes.

Of the 1 228 510 learners who entered Grade 1 in 2012 only 20,5% sat for the final core mathematics exam in the 2024 National Senior Certificate, and fewer than 1% achieved a distinction. This stark reality captures South Africa’s decades-long mathematics crisis. “Visualise this,” said Greg Shapiro, founder of K2U Learning Systems. “If every learner who dropped out of core mathematics stood shoulder-to-shoulder, the line would stretch from Cape Town to Johannesburg.” The ripple effects reach tertiary level, where around 120 000 students compete for just 10 000 university places. The country’s true youth unemployment rate – closer to 45% than the often-quoted 31% – underscores the economic and human cost of this academic failure. Yet Shapiro insisted the situation, though dire, can be fixed. “But the system needs to be rewired.” His wife, two daughters and their highly committed team are actively involved in building the organisation. TURNING KNOWLEDGE INTO UNDERSTANDING K2U Learning Systems specialises in accelerated, mnemonic-based learning for STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). The organisation, led by Shapiro, who has dedicated more than 40 years to developing transformative educational systems, follows a back-to-basics, brick-by-brick approach to rebuilding mathematical understanding. He explained that the cracks in the system appear early. In Grade 7 learners face a curriculum that, due to high content volume, fails to prepare them for the algebra-heavy demands of Grade 8 and 9. Skilled maths teachers are often reserved for senior grades, leaving junior learners – where foundations are laid – in less experienced hands. Language barriers often compound the problem. Most isiXhosa, isiZulu or Sesotho-speaking learners switch to English in Grade 4, making it harder to grasp abstract concepts. By Grade 10 many schools report that from four classes, much less than half a class remains in core mathematics. Systemic challenges further weaken progress. According to Shapiro the Annual Teaching Plan (ATP) due to a Covid-recovery approach not only prioritises pace over comprehension, forcing teachers to rush through content without cementing fundamentals, but completely leaves out essential algebraic fundamentals needed at high school. Oversized classes, under-resourced schools, inconsistent methodologies and limited upskilling opportunities further attribute to the extremely difficult conditions. “Very few teachers, if any, can solidify these foundations under the current circumstances,” said Shapiro. “They’re

pouring water into buckets with holes.” BREAKING THE CYCLE OF GENERATIONAL UNDERACHIEVEMENT Pamela Mudley, an education specialist with a corporate background, believes the “easy escape” of mathematical literacy and the complacency of parents deepen the problem. “Parents carry the trauma of maths and pass it on,” she explained. “When they say their child ‘isn’t a maths person’ they seal that child’s fate.” Mudley and Shapiro agree that solving the crisis requires a mindset shift – both from parents and learners – who often see mathematics only as a subject for future engineers or scientists. Instead, they argue, mathematics should be recognised as a life skill that develops problem-solving and analytical abilities, critical thinking and confidence, qualities essential for any career. THE K2U MODEL: REBUILDING THE FOUNDATION At the heart of K2U’s methodology are five key fundamentals every learner must master: Multiplication – Building computational fluency. Fractions – Forming the foundation for higher mathematics. BODMAS – Understanding number relationships. Formula Manipulation – Cultivating algebraic reasoning. Speed addition and number recognition – developing numerical agility. Using 30-minute daily exercise booklets and three-month targeted interventions for Grades 7 and 8, K2U achieves rapid improvement. The programme’s accelerated foundational learning model can reportedly recover up to seven years of lost mathematical skill in just three to six months.

CORPORATE COLLABORATION: INVESTING IN MEASURABLE CHANGE K2U’s model invites businesses to be part of the solution. Companies can fund tutor training through capital investment or by donating goods for resale via the “Take a Little, Do a Lot” campaign. “This initiative allows companies that may not have direct funding to still make an impact,” explained Lynette du Toit, K2U’s PR coordinator for community engagement. “Donated goods are sold, and all proceeds fund The Bundi Foundation’s tutor training programmes.” For corporates this represents a CSI investment with measurable returns. “Imagine investing in something where one can actually track the progress and see tangibly the benefits and effects of one’s CSI contributions,” Shapiro added. Participating businesses receive reports tracking student progress, simultaneously contributing to job creation and community upliftment. “Beyond philanthropy,” said Shapiro, “this is about building South Africa’s future workforce.” A SHARED VISION FOR 2030 K2U’s goal is ambitious yet practical: by 2030, The Bundi Foundation aims to train 1 000 tutors and reach 100 000 learners — each tutor supporting 100 students in their community. Shapiro and his team are calling for collective action from parents, corporates, government, and communities to prevent further decline in mathematical competency and its economic fallout. SHARED RESPONSIBILITY Every role matters. Parents must monitor progress, address maths anxiety, and encourage persistence. Teachers and tutors need support to identify and close foundational gaps. Corporates can invest in data-driven interventions that produce measurable change. “Job creation through tutor training benefits corporates too,” Du Toit concludes. “These children will one day work for you.” • K2U urges Grade 7 parents to make use of their free 30-minute Diagnostic Assessment and Consultation to evaluate whether their child is ready for Grade 8 mathematics. Overberg in the top 5 districts With four schools in the Overberg boasting a 100% matric pass rate this year, the region can be proud of every matric, teacher and parent. The remarkable achievement also saw the Overberg placed in the top 5 best performing districts. Gauteng: Johannesburg West is in first place with 96,20%, KwaZulu-Natal: Umkhanyakude in second place with 93,63%, The Overberg in third place with 92,36%, KwaZulu-Natal: Pinetown in fourth place with 92,20% and Gauteng: Tshwane North in fifth place with 92,03%. The four schools in the Overberg that boast a 100% pass rate are Bredasdorp High School, De Villiers Graaff High School in Villiersdorp, Hermanus High School and Overberg High School. Re-write Gr 12 exams free The Department of Basic Education (DBE) issued a statement on Monday emphasising that its Second Chance Programme remains completely free of charge for unsuccessful National Senior Certificate candidates. “The department stressed that it does not endorse any private or commercial services that require payment for participation in the Second Chance Programme,” the DBE stated. Officials advised unsuccessful candidates to contact the department directly or visit its official website for authentic information about rewriting examinations. Eligible individuals may register to

rewrite or add subjects without payment for the May/June examination cycle, according to departmental policies. The programme covers key subjects including accounting, agricultural science, business studies, economics, English First Additional Language, geography, history, mathematics, mathematical literacy, physical sciences and life sciences. Two categories of candidates qualify for support: Senior Certificate examination candidates registered for June examinations, and NSC part-time candidates who attempted examinations post-2008 and will write in May/June and November sessions.

Ovies pronk weer met 100% Mitzi Buys Die Hoërskool Overberg in Caledon het sy tradisie van ’n 100%-matriekslaagsyfer weer eens gestand gedoen. Die 94 matriekleerders van 2025 het besonder goed gevaar. Altesaam 77 het met graad-toelating geslaag en 15 met diploma-toelating. Ses leerders het A-simbole verwerf en 16 leerders het B-simbole verwerf. Daar was 78 vak-A’s en 128 vakB’s, met 25% van die klas met punte bo 70%. Altesaam 60% van die klas het bo 60%-gemiddeld verwerf, wat inderdaad ’n puik prestasie is. Die skoolhoof, Johan Jacobs, sê: “Ons is baie dankbaar vir die 100% slaagsyfer wat ons vir die vierde jaar in ’n ry behaal het. Dit is weer eens ’n bewys dat

Die vakansieprogramme wat die Caledon-biblioteek elke skoolvakansie vir laerskoolleerders aanbied, is iets waarna die kinders altyd uitsien. Die Desember-program was kort en het net oor drie dae gestrek, maar dit was ’n vol en verrykende program. Gerhard Afrika van Wyk van die Caledon-biblioteek sê: “Ons het op die eerste dag die Kersverhaal gedeel – oor waarom ons Kersfees vier en die belangrikheid daarvan. Dag twee het ons lekker speletjies gespeel asook kunsvlyt gedoen. Die hoogtepunt was gewis dag drie, 18 Desember, se besoek van die Iziko-museums in Kaapstad. Dit was ’n baie interaktiewe program waar die verskillende museums asook die belangrikheid van elkeen deur middel van ’n skyfievertoning bekendgestel is. Baie van die leerders se skoolvakke is betrek en hulle is vertel van, onder meer, planete en fossiele en hulle is sekere vrae gevra wat betrekking daarop gehad het.” Sithembele Harmans, die koördineerder van die Iziko-museums se opvoedkundige uitreikprogramme, het die kinders in die holte van sy hand gehad. Harmans het met die kinders Engels gepraat en almal het aandagtig geluister en sy vrae met groot entoesiasme beantwoord. Harmans het verduidelik net soos die biblioteek boeke het om die kinders se kennis te verbreed, het museums artefakte, wat as die museum se “boeke” beskou kan word. Die grootste opwin- ding was gewis die uitstalling wat die museum-personeel buite die biblioteek opgerig het. Omtrent elke afdeling van die museum is hier uitgestal. Daar was onder meer tradisionele krale- en

mandjiewerk, ’n yslike nekwerwel van ’n walvis, slange en seekatte in glasbottels wat in alkohol gepreserveer is asook ’n opgestopte pikkewyn. Harmans het verduidelik hoe taksidermie werk en verskillende stappe van die proses gewys. Hy het die kinders ook aan ’n pikkewyn-pels laat voel. Dié demonstrasie, asook die voorbeelde in die glasbottels, is met jille, gille en in sommige gevalle grille begroet. Ter afsluiting was daar ’n krale-aktiwiteit, waar elke kind ’n armband gemaak het, wat hulle as aandenking kon hou. Harmans het aan Hermanus Times gesê: “Die bussie waarmee ons vandag hier is, is Iziko-museums se mobiele museum. Soms is dit moeilik vir mense in afgeleë dorpe om ons museum te besoek, dus bring ons die museum na die mense. Ons weet wanneer die skole sluit, het baie kinders niks om te doen nie en daarom bied ons elke skoolvakansie ’n vakansieprogram in Kaapstad en omliggende plekke aan en vandag het

ons besluit om na die Caledon-biblioteek te kom. Ons program is opvoedkundig en interaktief en ons praat oor dinge wat in die verskeie ouderdomsgroepe se skoolkurrikulum is. Enige biblioteek wat van ons vakansieprogram gebruik wil maak, is welkom om my te kontak.” Afrika van Wyk het genoem dat die vakansieprogramme nie net pret vir die kinders is nie, maar ook stimulerend... “en hulle maak nuwe maats”. L2L presents ‘Liggies Loop’ event The spirit of Christmas came alive on the evening of 17 December as about 60 residents of all ages, accompanied by their four-legged companions, joined the Lighthouse2Lighthouse Ladies (L2L) for their annual “Liggies Loop”, a delightful community walk to admire the festive light displays in Hermanus. The popular charity walk showcased the town’s Christmas splendour, featuring decorations installed by both the municipality and local businesses. Adding to the festive atmosphere was L2L’s own contribution from last year – a dolphin light that continues to shine brightly at Gearing’s Point, serving as a beacon of community spirit. The highlight of the evening came at Ocean Basket, where generous L2L supporters Michele and Gideon Serfontein hosted the walkers with wine and nibbles. Veelsydige Botla-agterlynspeler gaan Laeveld toe

Vurige Ceejay na Pumas Mariëtte Strydom Klubrugby het sy doel gedien . . . Dit is hoe menige ondersteuner voel as hulle hoor van jong spelers wat week ná week hul hart vir hul plaaslike rugbyklubs uitspeel en dan deur een van die groter unies raakgesien en ’n kontrak aangebied word. Een so ’n speler is die gewilde agterlynspeler van Botla Fire, Ceejay Swartz. Dié 26-jarige boorling van Botrivier het nie in sy wildste drome gedink dat sy rugbyloopbaan ’n ander wending gaan neem nie. “Ek het net daarop gefokus om week ná week my beste vir Botla te gee en toe ek ’n oproep van die Pumas-bestuur kry om my rugbyloopbaan daar voort te sit, het ek eers gedink iemand skeer die gek met my,” vertel Ceejay. Dit was egter die waarheid en nadat die werklikheid ingeskop, vreugdevure gebrand en Ceejay vir twee weke ’n voorseisoen-oefenkamp in Mbombela bygewoon het, sien hy nou uit na die nuwe uitdaging wat hy sê God vir hom oor sy pad gebring het. “Vir iemand wat in die Laerskool Botrivier was en my hoërskoolloopbaan aan Groenberg Sekondêr in Grabouw voltooi het, het ek nooit gedink so ’n geleentheid sal oor my pad kom nie.” Hy vertel trots hy kom uit ’n rugbyfamilie en die rugbygogga het hom gebyt toe hy o.9 was. “Al is ek ’n veiligheidsbeampte by die Overstrand-munisipaliteit en al is my werk vir my baie belangrik, eet, slaap en leef ek rugby,” vertel hy. Ceejay het vandat hy 18 jaar oud was vir Botla Fire gespeel en daarna vir Hawston Skrik vir Niks en toe weer na sy tuisdorp se span teruggekeer. “Ek het in 2017 en 2018 vir Botrivier gespeel en in 2019 en 2020 vir Hawston. Ek het ná covid in 2022 weer by Botla Fire aangesluit en nog nie een keer teruggekyk nie. Die jaar by Botla was seker my hoogtepunt – nie net het ons bo-aan die Overberg-Grootuitdaag se punteleer geëindig nie, maar ons het ook in die uitspeelwedstryde bo verwagting goed gevaar.”

Ceejay was ook een van die beste driedrukkers in die toernooi en glo hy kan sy spelpeil vanjaar by die Pumas voortsit. Hy kan ook nie wag om deur een van die topafrigters in die land, Jimmy Stonehouse, afgerig te word nie. “Coach Jimmy het wondere met die Pumas verrig en is ’n gesiene afrigter in die land se rugbykringe. Ek is geëerd dat iemand soos hy my talent raakgesien het en ek sien baie uit om by hom te leer. Dit maak alles die moeite werd.” Volgens hom is dit dalk sy veelsydigheid in die agterlyn wat Coach Jimmy se oog gevang het. “Ek kan basies enige posisie in die agterlyn speel, maar my gunstelingposisie is buitesenter.” Hy kyk

veral op na Springbokspelers soos Cheslin Kolbe, Canan Moodie en Jessie Kriel. Ceejay, wat nog nooit in Mbombela was nie, sê dit gaan dalk ’n aanpassing wees, “maar een waarna ek uitsien”. Volgens hom was hy uit die veld geslaan deur die Laeveld se natuurskoon. “As ek verlang of soms moeilike dae gaan beleef, hou ek vas aan die belofte in Jeremia 29:11 wat lui: ‘Ek weet wat Ek vir julle beplan, sê die Here: Voorspoed en nie teenspoed nie; Ek wil vir julle ’n toekoms gee; ’n verwagting.’ ” Volgens hom geniet hy dit ook om tyd saam met sy familie en vriende deur te bring en in sy aftyd luister hy graag na Chris Brown se musiek. “Ek gaan dalk nou ver van my familie en vriende af

wees, maar tegnologie maak die afstand ’n bietjie korter.
