Overberg battered

Aferocious Level 8 storm tore through the Overberg on Monday and Tuesday, leaving a trail of destruction across multiple towns and municipalities, cutting power to thousands of homes, damaging structures, uprooting trees and bringing traffic to a standstill in what is shaping up to be one of the most destructive weather events the region has seen in recent memory.

From Monday morning, 11 May, both the Overstrand and Theewaterskloof municipalities had activated full disaster management operations, with teams deployed across the region responding to a rapidly growing number of incidents.

The storm’s most immediate and widespread impact was a catastrophic electricity failure affecting towns across the entire Overberg region. By Monday morning residents of Grabouw, Botrivier, Hermanus, Gansbaai, Hawston, Greyton, Stanford and Betty’s Bay were all without power.

Level 8 storm leaves trail of devastation

The Overstrand Municipality confirmed Eskom had been notified. “We suspect the issue may involve one of the main Eskom cables.” An Eskom update issued at 08:45 on Monday confirmed that teams were en route to the site at Hawston/Afdaks, where a number of 66kV breakers had tripped, affecting vast areas across the region.

With most traffic lights out of operation, residents were urged to treat all intersections as four-way stops.

TRUCKS OVERTURNED, ROADS BLOCKED

The violent winds claimed several vehicles on the region’s major routes, with multiple trucks blown over during the storm. In the Theewaterskloof municipal area a truck jack-knifed on the R321 near the Theewaterskloof bridge in Villiersdorp, with traffic officials deployed to the scene to manage the situation. Motorists were urged to approach the area with extreme caution.

STRUCTURAL DAMAGE ACROSS MULTIPLE TOWNS

The scale of structural damage reported across the Overberg is extensive. In Riviersonderend the roof of the Solid Waste Transfer Station was completely blown off, with sheets of roofing material scattered across the surrounding roadway. Theewaterskloof traffic services were on scene managing the hazard. Residents in the area were urged to exercise extreme caution as debris and roofing material continued to be hurled through the air by powerful winds.

In Grabouw multiple formal and informal structures sustained damage, with a shack structure completely blown over on the roadside of the N2 near Siyanyanzela on the incoming side. In Botrivier a private residential roof in Main Road was blown off, while water teams continued urgent repairs in the Keurboom area.

In Greyton and Genadendal multiple trees and branches blocked roads off the Main Road, and falling trees brought power lines down. A tree fell directly onto the roof of a house in Voorstekraal, with residents in that area left to assess the damage as storm teams worked to respond. In Caledon a tree collapsed in Human Street below the Nerina Hostel, while across the Overstrand area,

multiple formal and informal structures, including roofs and solar panels, were reported destroyed or severely damaged by the relentless winds.

“The Whale Coast Mall in Hermanus was not spared from the storm’s wrath,” said Grethe Conradie of Whale Coast Mall in a statement issued Monday morning. “Management confirmed the mall had sustained damage to several areas, but that it would remain operational. Due to the adverse weather conditions Whale Coast Mall has had a few issues and areas that have suffered damage. We are going to remain operational to the best of our abilities, but would like to caution customers to be vigilant of their surroundings and to prioritise safety in these conditions.”

COMMUNITIES URGED TO SEEK SHELTER

With conditions deteriorating, the Overstrand Municipality opened several community halls as emergency shelters for residents in need: Crassula Hall – Betty’s Bay; Masakhane Hall –Gansbaai; Zwelihle Community Hall –Hermanus. Residents were also warned to use water sparingly, as water treatment plants and sewage systems were expected to come under significant pressure during the storm. All hiking trails in Fernkloof, Rooiels and Kleinmond were closed. Schools in Overstrand and Theewaterskloof remained open.

R43 speed limit reduced

The speed limit along a section of the R43 between Karwyderskraal Road and Hawston is set to be reduced following ongoing road safety concerns raised by residents and local officials.

The road, known as “the road of death” has been the subject of a number of deaths in the previous months.

Die voormalige eiendomsagent Amy Neethling van Bredasdorp, wat beskuldig word van miljoene rande se bedrog, het Donderdag weer in die Bredasdorp-landdroshof verskyn.

Neethling, wat tans op waarskuwing vrygelaat is, staar bedrogaanklagte in die gesig wat verband hou met beweerde diefstal van geld uit ’n bejaarde weduwee se bankrekening, asook die beweerde ongemagtigde verkoop van haar eiendomme. Die besonderhede van die saak is deur IRS Forensiese Ondersoeke ondersoek, wat namens die klaagster optree.

Die saak is tot 7 Augustus uitgestel, wanneer dit na die Streekshof oorgedra sal word – ’n aanduiding van die erns en omvang van die beweerde oortredings. Bronne vertel bykomende aanklagte teen Neethling kan dalk verwag word en ander diefstal- en bedrogsake kan moontlik by hierdie saak gevoeg word.

Hermanus Times het die Nasionale Vervolgingsgesag (NVG) genader vir nog inligting, maar teen druktyd is nog geen formele verklaring oor die aanklagte teen Neethling uitgereik nie.

Prescription of debts: Hurry before it is too late!

WHAT IS PRESCRIPTION?

As a general rule prescription occurs when a debtor’s liability to pay a specific debt is extinguished as a result of the passing of a prescribed time period. As soon as a debt prescribes, a debtor is no longer under any obligation to pay it. It is still legal for the creditor to demand payment or even sue for a prescribed debt. The debtor will then, however, be able to raise the defence of prescription.

The Prescription Act prescribes the time periods after which specific debts prescribe. Most civil claims prescribe after three years. There are, however, various exceptions to this.

WHEN DOES PRESCRIPTION START TO RUN?

The above-mentioned prescriptive periods start to run as soon as the debt is due. When the debt is “due” will depend on when the identity of the debtor is known and when the facts from which the debt arises are known to the claimant. Importantly, prescription will start running irrespective of whether the creditor is aware of his/her rights.

CAN THE PRESCRIPTIVE TIME PERIOD BE DELAYED?

The prescription period can be delayed in certain circumstances in terms of the Prescription Act. A few examples include when the debtor is outside of South Africa, the creditor is a minor or the debt is the object of a dispute in arbitration.

Such a restriction will stop on, after or within one year before the normal prescription period will end. If the latter happens one year will be added after the date on which the restriction stopped.

The running of prescription will be interrupted by an acknowledgement of debt by the debtor and/or a summons being served by the creditor on the debtor, claiming performance in terms of the debt.

Woman dead, suspect in custody

Caledon police have opened a murder case following the discovery of the body of a 37-year-old woman who had been reported missing.

According to police Janine Hopley was reported missing by her boyfriend on Friday 1 May, after which an inquiry was registered and investigated by Caledon police. The search took a grim turn on Thursday 7 May when her body was discovered at the cemetery. Hopley’s family, who were at the scene after the body was discovered, recognised her from her tattoos. “It is a very sad situation and the family is devastated,” a community leader said.

In the days that followed Hopley’s disappearance communities across the Overberg gave a show of solidarity. Residents rallied behind search efforts, amplifying appeals across social media platforms and keeping the public informed as the situation unfolded. The overwhelming response spoke of the deep emotional weight the case carried for countless people who followed every development with hope and concern.

The discovery of Hopley’s body at the Caledon Cemetery led to the arrest of a suspect, who was subsequently processed and was expected to appear in court on a murder charge on Monday 11 May. Police had not yet released further details surrounding the woman’s death.

Those who knew the deceased remembered her as a woman of extraordinary warmth and kindness, someone whose gentle spirit had left a lasting impression on everyone she encountered.

Tributes flooding into social media paint the picture of a thoughtful, big-hearted soul deeply cherished by family and friends. As

her tragic death was mourned messages of condolence continued to pour in, a testament perhaps to lives she had quietly but profoundly touched.

• Hopley’s relatives believed the woman’s boyfriend was allegedly responsible for her death, as reported by Son. However, the details of the accused’s identity or relationship to the deceased were not yet revealed or confirmed by Caledon police. Authorities appealed to anyone with information on the incident to contact Caledon Police Station commander Lt Col T Xulubana on 082 778 7367.

Parking lots crime hot spots

Parking areas across the Overberg have become increasingly dangerous spaces where opportunistic criminals target unsuspecting members of the public and safety experts are urging motorists to take their personal security seriously before, during and after every visit.

Security specialists say criminals operating in parking areas rely on one thing above all else: distraction. Shoppers preoccupied with bags, phones or children are prime targets for smash-and-grab attacks, bag snatching, vehicle theft and carjacking.

“People drop their guard the moment they park,” said one private security consultant. “That split second of inattention is exactly what criminals are waiting for.”

Experts recommend that motorists park as close to building entrances or security booths as possible, and always in well-lit areas, particularly at night. Before exiting a vehicle occupants should scan their surroundings carefully. Valuables such as handbags, laptops and cellphones must never be left visible inside a parked car. On returning to a vehicle members of the public are advised to have their keys ready before reaching the car, check the back seat before entering and lock doors immediately once inside. Women and the elderly were reminded never to sit in a parked vehicle while on their phones; it is an easy opportunity. Police say awareness and vigilance are the best deterrents.

‘Heroes need fuel too, thank you!’

Following one of the most brutal fire seasons the Western Cape, and the Overberg region in particular, had ever experienced Hermanus Times launched the Heroes Need Fuel Too campaign, collecting non-perishable goods for the firefighters of the Overberg region. (“W Cape had the worst fire season” and “HT-led drive now extended”, Hermanus Times, 29 April 2026).

Firefighters truly are unsung heroes who risk their lives every time they attend to a fire, often working gruelling shifts of up to 72 hours. To do this, and to keep communities and property safe, they need proper nutrition and hydration. For this reason the drive specifically chose goods that provide quick energy as well as essential relief items.

The newspaper asked and the community responded by generously donating required items. The response so far has been incredible and heart-warming. Due to logistics and because donations of various quantities and types came in at different times, all items had to be sorted and packed as well as checked for expiry dates.

On Wednesday 6 March a whole bakkie-load full of donations was collected for distribution. This included more than

1 000 bottles of water and energy drinks, bags full of crisps, loads of energy bars, biscuits as well as a large quantity of essential relief items such as lip balm and eye drops.

Many of the items such as energy drinks and energy bars came in handy for the International Firefighters Day Celebration which was held in Bredasdorp on Saturday 9 May, when teams from across the region put their skills,

strength and teamwork to the test. The remainder of the items will be reserve stock for when the new fire season begins.

The Hermanus First Fridays Art Walk was among the first to respond to our request with a very generous donation. We extend our sincere thanks to them as well as to the other donors, including Avbob Caledon, DR church Caledon, Overberg High School, Caledon VLV,

Items required: water and energy drinks (500 ml), energy bars, chocolates (Bar One), snacks such as small packets of chips, lip balm or small pots of Vaseline, eye drops, Super C sweets, gummies, lollipops and biscuits.

Bully beef, which is easy to prepare while out in the field, is also very welcome. Please note that all items must have a “Best Before” date that is valid until well into 2027.

Die Matrikulant van die Jaar-kompetisie maak al langer as 40 jaar ’n verskil in die lewe van honderde jong mense wat hul loopbaan aan die Universiteit van die Vrystaat (UV) begin het. Vanjaar sal dit nie anders wees nie, met die 45ste kompetisie wat vandeesweek begin.

Dit is nie net die bekendstelling van die 2026-kompetisie nie – die UV is ook opgewonde om Novus Media as nuwe mediavennoot te verwelkom.

Novus Media, ’n filiaal van Novus Holdings, het ’n nasionale voetspoor van 36 gratis gemeenskapskoerante, ’n nasionale koerant, Die Papier , en ’n sterk digitale en sosialemedia-teenwoordigheid.

Vir haar het dit veel meer betekenisvol geword as net ’n kompetisie – dit behels ook vriendskappe, ondersteuning en ’n gedeelde begrip “dat ons almal na iets groter as onsself gestreef het”.

“As ek terugkyk, dink ek aan wat die kompetisie my werklik geleer het, en dit is die belangrikheid van verbondenheid en aanmoediging.

“Dit het my gewys hoe kragtig dit is om omring te wees deur mense wat jou ophef en motiveer.”

Heidehof se konsert ’n reusesukses

“Trou is nie perde koop nie” is ’n bekende Afrikaanse idioom. Dit is gewis ook nie iets om oor te lag nie, maar as dit ’n agterstevoorbruilof is, mag ’n mens maar lag. As dit dan boonop ’n dubbele agterstevoorbruilof is, mag ’n mens nog harder lag.

Die inwoners van Heidehof Tehuis vir Bejaardes in Caledon het koppe bymekaargesit om planne te maak vir hul geldinsameling en het met die briljante idee van ’n agterstevoorbruilof vorendag gekom.

Nes met enige ander bruilof moes baie voorbereidings vir hierdie groot dag gedoen word. Rolle moes ingedeel word, dialoog moes geleer word, kostuums moes uitgesorteer word en hulle moes met die “buite-akteurs” –gemeenskapslede – skakel, maar alles is met groot opgewondenheid gedoen.

Uiteindelik het die groot dag aangebreek. Schatschi Eufesia Nootvas (’n musiekjuffrou by die parlement om valsheid uit te roei)

en Dalidius Herculus Topnaar (’n mynwerker wat ge-board is nadat hy die mynkanarie gebraai het) asook Frikkirina Ossewania Splitter (’n balletdanseres wat met elke rugbywedstryd die spelers al dansende op die veld lei) en Sandrickus Muscleman Moermy (’n uitsmyter by Heidehof se Outoppieklub) kon uiteindelik in die eg verbind word. Soos te verwagte was daar natuurlik ’n beswaarmaker of twee, maar hulle is sommer gou op hul plek gesit. Ná die seremonie is troufoto’s geneem voordat die egpare en hul gevolg by die onthaaltafel aangesit het. Regtig agterstevoor het die gaste sommer tydens die huwelikseremonies al begin eet aan die heerlike kos wat in peuselboksies voorgesit is, en die vonkelwyn, wyn en vrugtesap wat op elke tafel was, ook geniet.

Fana de Wet was die troubeplanner en haar ma, Dolores Prinsloo, was die “gasheer”. Maar tannie Dolores was die eintlike dryfveer agter hierdie wonderlike opvoering. Fana sê: “Dat my ma op 94 die moed van haar oortuiging gehad het om weer ’n

konsert aanmekaar te sit – by Heidehof, nogal – bly prysenswaardig en met genade onbeskryflik groot. Elke karakter is fyn uitgesoek, kleredrag is sorgvuldig beplan, liedjies is met haar musikale oor uitgesoek en kos, tafels en drinkgoed is fyn beplan. Ek is as troubeplanner ingespan en het dit terdeë geniet. Die mooiste van die hele konsert was die spontaniteit waarmee die inwoners van Heidehof elke karakter hul eie gemaak het.”

Hermanus Music Society presents its fourth concert

Those who were fortunate enough to attend the Hermanus Music Society’s March concert will need little persuasion to return. The memory of a superb saxophone and piano performance, complemented by exceptional Beaumont wines, is still fresh and the Society’s fourth concert of the year promises to be every bit as memorable.

On the evening of Friday 29 May The Hermanus Music Society will host an evening of remarkable breadth and colour, featuring the considerable talents of Likhona Tokota (tuba) and Chanda Lupambo (piano). This event will take place at the Gereformeerde Church in Bergsig Street, Sandbaai.

The programme opens with Vladislav Blazhevich’s “Concert Étude”, followed by Benedetto Marcello's “Sonata in F minor”. Audiences will then be treated to some of the most beloved works in the classical repertoire: Chopin’s “Berceuse”, Tchaikovsky’s “Andante Cantabile from String Quartet No 1”, and Chopin’s irresistible “Fantasie Impromptu”.

The second half ventures further afield, with four movements from Enrique Crespo’s “Escenas Latinas” and four short dances from Bartók's “Hungarian Folk Dances”, a vivid and rhythmically alive pairing.

For devotees of Camille Saint-Saëns hauntingly beautiful “Mon Cœur s'ouvre à ta voix” from Samson and Dalila will follow, along with Chopin’s Étude Op 25, No 5

The evening rounds off with Tom Dossett’s “Trilogy for Bass Trombone” and closes on a whimsical and vir -

(tuba) and Chanda Lupambo (piano) will be performing on 29 May.

JFFC Tournament series in full swing

There is something truly special happening on the football fields of the Overberg, and it goes far beyond goals and trophies.

The JFFC Community Football Federation (JFFC) has kicked off its 2026 youth tournament season in spectacular fashion - and if the opening round in Hawston is anything to go by, this year promises to be the biggest and most exciting season yet.

The 2026 season got underway on 28 February in Hawston, with a jaw-dropping turnout that exceeded all expectations. A remarkable 540 young players flooded the field, representing clubs and communities from across the Overberg, while close to 1 000 spectators lined the sidelines to cheer them on - transforming the day into a vibrant festival of grassroots football.

From junior primary school pupils lacing up their boots for the first time, to high school students showcasing refined skills honed through seasons of competitive play, every age group brought energy, passion and plenty of exciting football to the field.

POWERFUL MISSION

JFFC Community Football Federation is no ordinary sports organisation. At its heart lies a powerful mission - to use football as a force for good in communities across the Overberg. Grant Gillion, speaking on behalf of the federation, captured the spirit of the tournament perfectly: "For many young people, football provides a positive outlet to stay active, focused and away from crime."Many of the players taking part come from the communities of Hawston, Mount Pleasant and Zwelihle - areas where organised sport can make a real and lasting difference in the lives of young people. The JFFC tournament not only gives players

On Saturday and Sunday during the Hermanus Sport Board League the local team of Zwelihle, The Bombers played against City Bugs, Sunrise played against Young Ideas, Golden Boys played against Techno, Shooting Stars played against GG, Amaviyviyo played against Xhora Celtics and Happy Brothers played against Vutha. The Hermanus Sport Board League continues to be one of the most important platforms for local football in the Overberg. Week in and week out, players who might otherwise have no competitive outlet pull on their boots and pour everything they have into representing their clubs.

Rivalries in this league are healthy and spirited, but what stands out above all else is the respect between teams - the handshakes before kickoff, the embraces after the final whistle, and the shared understanding that at the end of the day, it is all about the love of football.

Locals bring home 43 trophies

The 2026 South African Kickboxing Championships, held in Oudtshoorn recently, brought together a staggering 929 kickboxers from all nine provinces in what proved to be one of the most fiercely contested national tournaments in recent memory - and it was the Western Cape team that stood tallest when the final bell rang.

Leading the charge for the Western Cape was Legacy Martial Arts Academy from Hermanus, whose 18-strong contingent produced a performance that will be remembered in local martial arts circles for years to come. The team returned home with an extraordinary haul of 43 trophies - 10 gold, 12 silver and 21 bronze - a testament to the dedication, discipline and heart that define the Legacy academy.

What makes the achievement even more remarkable is that 10 of the 18 fighters were competing at their very first SA Championships. To perform at that level on the biggest national stage, against the best fighters the country has to offer, speaks volumes about the

calibre of coaching and preparation at Legacy Martial Arts Academy. Guiding the team throughout the championships was Shihan Ruehan van Romburgh, head coach of Legacy Martial Arts Academy, whose tactical guidance and motivational leadership were clearly evident in every bout his fighters stepped into. Special mention must go to Aidan Brummer and Zius Brand, who both claimed three gold medals each — standout individual performances in a team full of champions.

The Legacy team will have little time to rest on their laurels. The road ahead is an exciting one, with two major international tournaments on the horizon.

First up is the African Kickboxing Championships 2026, to be held in Cameroon at the end of June - where South Africa's finest will test themselves against the best the continent has to offer.

The Youth World Kickboxing Championships 2026 in Italy in early October promises to be the ultimate stage for the younger members of the Legacy squad, as they take on the world's elite.

Saffies kom weer nie die mas op

Saterdag was alle oë gerig op die wedstryd tussen Safcol en Hawston Skrik vir Niks in Die Bos, Hawston.

Hawston, wat nog altyd baie sterk is en gereeld een van die topspanne is, kon verlede jaar nie die mas opkom nie, maar vanjaar het hulle reeds gewys wat in hulle steek. Die span, wat nou tweede op die punteleer is, het een van die gunstelingspanne, Safcol, Saterdag op Hawston se tuisveld 44-29 verslaan.

Dit het in die eerste helfte gelyk of dit net die span van Skrik vir Niks is wat op die veld was. Die een drie ná die ander is ingeryg en die goeie samespel tussen die voor- en agterspelers van Hawston het Safcol se vuur geblus.

Hawston het sy huiswerk goed gedoen om vinnig by die afbreekpunte te wees en het ook gereeld oor die voordeellyn beweeg. Sy goeie samespel tussen vooren agterspelers het gemaak dat hulle nie net drieë ingeryg het nie, maar ook die span selfvertroue gegee om in die tweede helfte met hul goeie spel voort te gaan.

Saffies het ná rustyd met ’n groot slag teruggekom en die skrums oorheers. Een van die topdrieë van die wedstryd was van Saffies toe die agterspelers met goeie samespel van hul eie doellyn af deur die verdediging van Hawston beweeg en ’n drie onder die pale gedruk het. Die kaptein van Skrik vir Niks, Branden Hunter, het in ’n onderhoud met Sydney Armoed gesê die wedstryd tussen Saffies en Hawston is altyd ’n groot ding en “jy kan Saffies nooit afskryf nie”.

Hy het gesê hy het – nadat Saffies in die tweede helfte teruggeveg het – harde woorde met sy span gehad.

Dit is die tweede nederlaag vir Safcol nadat die span verlede Saterdag ook teen Botla Fire die onderspit gedelf het. Volgens die kaptein van Safcol, Benjamin Dwayi, is dit nie maklik nie. Hy het in ’n

onderhoud gesê: “Dit is ’n bitter pil om te sluk, maar ons as span moet maar net regmaak. Ons kan nie soos verlede week in die tweede helfte eers begin speel nie.”

Een van Safcol se lojaalste ondersteuners, Armoed, het die volgende op Facebook te sê gehad: “Daar is nie nou tyd om te worry nie; die spelers en bestuur weet wat om te doen. Maar ons moet net een ding onthou – die top-12 word nie al in Mei bepaal nie.”

CALEDON EN BOTRIVIER

In nog ’n wedstryd tussen Caledon en Botrivier lyk dit of Caledon beter speel nadat hy verlede week ’n nuwe afrigter gekry het. Al het hy 45-29 teen Botrivier verloor, lyk dit asof Bredall Swart ’n verskil in die span maak. Dié oudspeler en ’n inwoner van Caledon het al diep spore in Caledon-rugby getrap en sien uit na die nuwe uitdaging.

In die ander uitslae het Kleinmond teen Atlantics net-net met 22-19 gewen. Universals het Villiersdorp maklik met

Skrik vir Niks wys diepte

47-28 oorheers, terwyl Bredasdorp Rangers die Sea Hawks 37-35 geklop het. Die eens sukkelende Grabouw het darem sy tweede oorwinning van die seisoen opgelewer en Genadendal 31-17 geklop. Botrivier is tans boaan die punteleer met 40 punte, Hawston is tweede met 39, Safcol het 36 en Stanford 32.

Saterdag speel Botrivier teen Universals, Hawston teen Atlantics, Safcol teen Caledon, Bredasdorp Rangers teen Grabouw, Villiersdorp teen Genadendal en Sea Hawks teen Kleinmond.
