Callies crisis deepens
As the Overberg Grootuitdaag league commenced on Saturday, the proud Caledon Rugby Club (Callies) faces an unprecedented crisis that threatens not just their competitive season, but the very survival of rugby in this historic Overberg town.
The club, synonymous with the region's rich sporting tradition and a respected Boland Grand Challenge contender, has been forced to confront the devastating reality of playing without proper home facilities due to what they describe as "inadequate and dilapidated" infrastructure.
Caledon Sports Grounds debacle
The situation at Caledon Sports Grounds has reached crisis point, with a catalog of problems that reads like a sporting nightmare: No home games have been possible in 2026 due to poor municipal planning and prioritisation of other sporting codes over rugby. The club's working players, who can only train after hours, face the impossible task of practicing in complete darkness due to non-functional floodlights. Security has become a joke, with
facilities regularly vandalised by criminals. The clubhouse has been "literally stripped bare," while the pavilion has stood without a roof since 2020. Changing rooms have deteriorated to such an extent that receiving visiting teams has become an embarrassment.
Social media has become the outlet for mounting frustration, with residents demanding action from Theewaterskloof Municipality. "It looks to me like Uitsig
RFC and Caledon RFC should also go and toi-toi in front of the Municipal offices," posted Facebook user Aidan Abrahams, reflecting growing sentiment that officials only respond to drastic protest action.
Supporter Agnes Elizabeth made an emotional appeal: "My whole family's names are there; I made sure of it. Come on Callies Supporters, sign that PETITION FOR THE TOWN!"
The crisis stems from broader financial mismanagement within Theewaterskloof Municipality.

Vissers verwelkom besluit
Noluvu Ludidi
’n Aantal kleinskaalse vissers en vennote was teenwoordig by ’n media-inligtingsessie waar dié besluit aangekondig is.

Plaaslike regering beïnvloed jou daaglikse lewe regstreeks.

Kiesers kies raadslede – vir wyke of via proporsionele verteenwoordiging (PR).

Activists vow to continue
One Billion Rising members Lucinda Evans and Tanya Bibbert will keep on challenging their protection order as they demand Child Justice Act reforms following the Caledon schoolgirl Deveney Nel affair.
These two prominent activists refused to be silenced on Friday as their court appearance was postponed yet again, extending a legal battle that has now stretched to over a year since the mother of Deveney’s convicted male teenage murderer applied for a protection order against them.
“We will not remain silent and we will fight for those who cannot fight for themselves,” Evans declared. She argued this protection order represented a direct attack on Bibbert’s and her constitutional rights to freedom of speech and peaceful protest. “This parent threatens our constitutional rights to freedom of speech as activists by trying to prohibit us from supporting families of femicide and GBV victims.” Evans emphasised her movement had a broader mission in this instance; using
it as a platform to call for fundamental reforms to the Child Justice Act, arguing that current protections for minors enable serious violent crimes to go inadequately punished. “We have children with violent behaviour perpetrating rape, firing off guns and killing other children, and enjoying the protection of the Act as minors even when they turned 18.” She said there were dangerous loopholes in current legislation. Evans and Bibbert demand that children who commit murder receive life sentences without parole, particularly for repeat serious offences, and want parents held accountable when they fail to address known violent behaviour in their children. The case is postponed until 12 June. Meanwhile, the convicted teen’s mother had dropped the case against journalist and author Julian Jansen who published the book The Murder of Deveney Nel • Last year in October the Western Cape High Court sentenced a child in conflict with the law to an effective 25-year direct imprisonment following his conviction for the murder of Deveney Nel and an attempt
to defeat the ends of justice.
“In such a case 25 years’ direct imprisonment is the maximum sentence the accused would receive under the law,” Eric Ntabazalila, National Prosecuting Authority Regional Communications Manager of the Western Cape, explained.
He said the accused, through his legal representative, had approached the state with an offer to enter into a plea and sentence agreement. “He confessed to the murder of Nel, an attempt to hide her body and he was sentenced to 25 years’ direct imprisonment for the murder and 12 months’ direct imprisonment for the attempt to defeat the ends of justice. The court ordered the sentences to run concurrently, effectively sentencing him to 25 years’ direct imprisonment. Both her mother, Lida Nel, and the investigating officer, detective WO Louw, were consulted before the sentence agreement was concluded, and they agreed to it.”

Property of deceased
When someone passes away, the executor appointed by the Master of the High Court has the responsibility to manage the estate, which may include selling immovable property. This can only be done once Le ers of Executorship have been issued. Without them, any agreement of sale is invalid. The executor is then authorised to market the property, sign the sale agreement, and complete transfer documents on behalf of the estate. However, certain legal requirements under the Administration of Estates Act must be followed.
In terms of Section 42(2), before a transfer
estate
can occur, the executor must obtain the Master’s endorsement confirming no objections to the sale.
Section 49 further provides that if an executor, or anyone closely connected to them, wishes to purchase estate property, this may only happen with the Master’s approval.
This safeguard ensures transparency and prevents conflicts of interest.
In short, the executor plays a vital role in ensuring the fair and legal transfer of estate property. By following the procedures set out in law - from obtaining Le ers of Execu-
torship to securing the Master’s consent — the process protects heirs and upholds the integrity of the estate administration.

While a R8 million project was announced for sports development in neighboring Grabouw in February 2024, no specific funds have been allocated for upgrading Caledon's sports facilities. Reports from mid-2025 highlighted how mismanagement has directly impacted facility maintenance, leaving Caledon's sporting infrastructure to decay while other municipalities like Overstrand develop new fields.
Despite recent meetings with the Municipal Manager and Mayor in January, no promised decisions have been implemented. The club has now issued a 10-day ultimatum demanding a clear upgrade plan, warning that "other options" will be considered if the municipality fails to act.
"The stadium and its facilities have become an eyesore," the club stated in their open letter. "It is not fitting for a town with such a rich sporting tradition as Caledon." With rugby representing far more than sport in Caledon – serving as youth investment and community identity – the future of this heritage hangs in the balance.
At the time of going to press, the Theewaterskloof Municipality had not responded to the issues raised.

Verbrugge, ’n wêreldbekende musikus, voorberei is.

A rare orchid well spotted
What began as a routine Saturday morning botanical walk through a nature reserve in the Overberg has resulted in one of the most significant botanical discoveries in the Western Cape in recent years, potentially saving an orchid species from extinction.
Veronica O’Connell, a dedicated member of the Hermanus Botanical Society, made the extraordinary find on 28 February when she spotted a small orchid quietly growing among the vegetation just 200 m before the end of their group walk, a “moment of sighting was deeply meaningful.
“I’m grateful for my good eyesight that allows me to continue observing the wonders of the natural world.”
Actively botanising for five years, what for her initially appeared to be a fortunate orchid discovery quickly transformed into something far more re-
markable. The specimen was identified as Disa forficaria, a rarely seen species botanists thought had disappeared forever.
The orchid hadn’t been sighted for a full decade, the last recorded observation occurring in 2016, ironically also in the same nature reserve by fellow Hermanus Botanical Society member.
Before that momentous discovery the species had vanished from scientific records for an astounding 60 years, the last documented sighting in the Houw Hoek area.
The location of the latest precious find remained strictly confidential due to the orchid’s extreme rarity.
Botanists have emphasised that the site remain undisturbed to allow for successful pollination, critical for producing fertile, viable seeds that could give the species its only chance to procreate and survive extinction.
Since the discovery Veronica and sev-
eral fellow botanists have been conducting carefully planned, brief monitoring visits to quietly observe the plant’s life cycle during its crucial blooming and seed-producing periods.
The significance of this rediscovery extends far beyond local botanical cir-
cles, with Dr Callan Cohen publishing a scientific paper documenting the find, ensuring the discovery contributes to broader conservation knowledge and efforts to protect South Africa’s extraordinary floral heritage.

Orchid sexually exploits male beetles – an African rst
Dr Callan Cohen, a research associate of the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) FitzPatrick Institute of African Ornithology, has discovered a world pollination first: an orchid that sexually exploits longhorn beetles.
The near-extinct Disa forficaria, known from a single remaining plant in the mountains near Cape Town, mimics a female beetle so convincingly that the male beetle mates with the flower, pollinating it.
Dr Cohen and a team of local and international researchers discovered an entirely new chemical system involved in this deception and are pioneering a process of using pollination to survey for the presence of critically-endangered plants.
These discoveries stem from Cohen’s search for rare African orchids in the mountain ranges near Cape Town.
Disa forficaria – a relative of the iconic Red Disa – was last seen in 1966, and only 11 of these plants have been found in the last 200 years, making it one of the rarest plants in the world.
In an attempt to document the last known plant, Cohen aimed to take detailed photographs of it. However, it only produces one flower at a time;
and when Cohen first saw it the flower had withered. But he persisted, visiting a further four times until another flower bud slowly ripened.
On his fourth visit Cohen was excited to see a second flower had opened, with a most mysterious shape for any orchid.
DECEIVED BEETLES
“Incredibly, while I was observing a beetle flew to the plant and clearly mated with it,” he recalled. With his interest in pollination biology Cohen immediately realised the significance of the observation and captured it with his camera.
Orchids are known as deceivers; they mainly use food deception by imitating plants with nectar despite having none, such as the famous example of Cluster Disa on Table Mountain.
However, in Europe there is a group of orchids that uses sexual deception on bees, and in Australia orchids are found that do the same thing with wasps.
And while beetles are the oldest-known pollinators of plants, and the most diverse group of plant pollinators, as Cohen discovered, it is the first clear case of a plant sexually deceiving a beetle.
The other systems of deception have been studied extensively; but how, wondered
Cohen, did this new system work with beetles? And could it be described from only a single living plant?
PROVING SEXUAL DECEPTION
The next step was to prove that what Cohen had witnessed was indeed sexual deception. He assembled a joint South African and international team to investigate the phenomenon, including UCT alumnus and world-famous pollination researcher Professor Steven Johnson, the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Dr Adam Shuttleworth, UCT’s Centre for Statistics in Ecology, Environment and Conservation associate Dr Jonathan Colville, and orchid experts William Liltved and Benny Bytebier. Using detailed photography Cohen noticed the beetle had a small, penis-like organ which it inserted into the modified lip of the flower. But would they find sperm on the plant?
Cohen took several macro photographs of the flower just before the moment he predicted the beetle would get to the flower.
The beetle duly visited the flower and then flew off leaving something behind. The substance was tested and conclusively showed sperm.
“This is only the second time in the world that an insect
has been found to ejaculate on a plant during pollination.”
Near-extinct “Disa forficaria” mimics the appearance and chemistry of a female beetle.
A NEW CHEMICAL SYSTEM
Following this discovery, the researchers posed another question: What chemical was attracting the beetle to the flower? “We wondered if there was a whole new chemical system that hadn’t yet been described,” said Johnson.
To answer this the team took a sample from the flower and caught a beetle to test in the laboratory.
They began by vaporising a piece of the flower in a gas tube; then they looked at the electrical impulse of the beetle’s antennal response, before correlating the molecular weight of the emitted chemical.
From this they found that the active chemical in the flower was what had attracted the beetle.
The team sent the plant extract to a top chemist in Germany, the Max Planck Institute’s Dr Ales Svatos, who discovered the chemical involved and whose colleague, Dr Jerrit Weissflog, synthesised possible forms of its molecular structure.
The chemical was a newly discovered macrolide, which the
team named “disalactone”. Cohen’s research team tested the synthesised molecules in the field, to find out which forms of the plant’s chemical the beetle would be attracted to.
“Fascinatingly, the beetles all came to a particular form of the synthesised component, believed to be a mimic of the female beetle pheromone produced by the orchid.”
Beetles are attracted by a newly described chemical, and even ejaculate into a false cloaca on the orchid’s lip.
WAY FORWARD
Following these multiple discoveries, and the recent publication of Cohen’s and the research team’s findings in Current Biology, pollination experts from around the world are studying the consequences and implications.
The research findings of Cohen et al also provide insights into long-horned beetle pheromones, the beetle’s larvae burrow in wood, and are thus important commercially. The research provides further perspectives into biological macrolide functioning, important antibiotic components.

Top honours for young writer
The Western Cape Education Minister, David Maynier, had the honour of delivering exciting news to Hawston Primary School on Friday 6 March, that its Grade 4 learner Zawyin Gillion had claimed top honours in the 2025 Story Stars creative-writing competition.
The annual Western Cape Education Department competition, designed to inspire literacy and storytelling among Grade 4 learners across the province, received its most imaginative entry yet in Zawyin’s captivating tale, “Felix and Felicity and the Crystal of Light”.
‘Zawyin’s story is quite the adventure, written both imaginatively and creatively, with excellent punctuation, spelling and vocabulary throughout,” Maynier noted in announcing the win.
As this year’s overall provincial winner Zawyin’s magical story has been transformed into a fully-animated short film, the young author providing the narration and appearing as the brave hero Zaywin alongside beloved characters Felix and Felicity. The film premiered during Maynier’s school visit, bringing the learner’s imaginative tale of siblings discovering a glowing map and embarking on a quest for the legendary Crystal of Light to vibrant life.
The competition’s success reflects dedicated teaching, with Grade 4 educator Maurisia

whispering forests two siblings, Felix and Felicity, discovered a strange glowing map inside an old book in the attic. It showed the way to the Crystal of Light, a magical gem said to protect the
land fromdarkness.
Excited and curious Felix and Felicity set off on an adventure. But as they reached the edge of the Dark Forest storm clouds rolled in and a coldshadow crept of the land the map began to fade and they lost their way. Suddenly a bright figure appeared, slicing through the shadows like a beam of sunlight.
It was Zaywin, a legendary hero known for bravery and wisdom. “You are not alone,” he declared. “I’ve been watching over you.” With Zaywin leading the way they crossed rivers, climbed cliffs and outsmarted trickyforest creatures. At last they reached the crystal’s resting place guarded by a huge stone beast. Felix and Felicity were frozen in fear. But Zaywin stepped forward, held out a hand glowing with light. The Beast said with a deep growl: “Who dares come to my home?”
Zawyin took a deep breath, then: “I am Zaywin I’ve come to protect my friends and the forest.” The beast said softly: “I guard the forest and keep it safe. Kindness and courage are stronger than fear”. The beast calmed and bowed and left. Together they returned the crystal to its pedestal and sunlight burst through the clouds.
The village cheered as light and peace returned. Felix and Felicity had started the journey but it was the hero Zaywin who saved the day.

A musicalgems night
Music lovers are in for a treat as the Hermanus Music Society presents its highly-anticipated third concert of the season, featuring the dynamic Cape Town-based Novo Duo on Thursday, 27 March.
The evening will showcase the remarkable musical partnership between Josie McClure on saxophone and Seung-Ree Lee on piano, two accomplished musicians whose collaboration began during their studies at Stellenbosch University in 2021.
“Having discovered a passion for collaboration and a desire to explore the expressive possibilities of saxophone and piano music, they bring deep musical connection and thoughtful artistry to every performance,” organisers say.
The duo’s repertoire spans classical and contemporary works, promising an evening of diverse musical experiences. Highlights include Takashi Yoshimatsu’s whim-
sical “Fuzzy Bird Sonata”, Fernande Decruck’s dramatic “Sonata in C-sharp for Alto Sax and Piano”, and François Borne’s virtuosic “Fantaisie Brillante” based on Bizet’s Carmen. The programme also features works by Eugene Bozza, Darius Milhaud’s beloved Scaramouche and Jean Matitia’s spirited “The Devil’s Rag”.
The evening begins at 17:45 with wine and canapés at the Dutch Reformed church in Bergsig Street, Sandbaai, the concert commencing at 18:30. Carefully-selected wine pairings include Beaumont Chenin Blanc 2023 Magnums and Raoul's Red Blend 2023. Booking essential: Attendance confirmation required by Tuesday 24 March for catering purposes. Non-member tickets cost R250 per person via EFT to Hermanus Music Society, Standard Bank account 00082262969. For more information contact hermanusmusicsociety@ gmail.com
Acclaimed pianist returns for concert
Music lovers are in for a treat this Sunday as internationally celebrated concert pianist Amit Hahav makes his highly anticipated return to Hermanus, bringing with him a personal musical journey that promises to captivate audiences.
The Oak Concert, scheduled for 15:30 on Sunday, 15 March at the Hermanus Civic Auditorium, showcases Hahav's artistic evolution through carefully selected repertoire that has shaped his distinguished career. At the heart of the programme lie two towering masterpieces of Romantic piano literature: Schumann's emotionally charged Fantasy in C Major and Chopin's magnificent Sonata in B Minor.
"These works have been particularly important throughout my career," explains Hahav, whose personal
connection to South Africa adds an extra layer of intimacy. The programme thoughtfully weaves together musical narratives, featuring Bach's timeless compositions as reimagined by visionary pianists of the early 20th century, alongside Chopin's hauntingly beautiful operatic night music. This carefully curated concert represents more than just a recital – it's a musical autobiography told through the keys, revealing the pieces that have most profoundly influenced one of today's leading pianists. The intimate venue promises an up-close experience with world-class artistry. Tickets available from Rene du Plooy 082 940 4238 or sent an email to renedup@telkomsa.net

A special fundraising event, “Sketch & Sip”, promises an afternoon of art, wine and wildlife conservation that will directly benefit the sanctuary’s recovery efforts.
Following the recent wildfires that struck the sanctuary, Panthera Africa faces significant challenges in rebuilding while continuing to provide essential care for their rescued lions, leopards and tigers. The event on 20 March offers the community a meaningful way to contribute to this vital cause while enjoying an enriching artistic experience.
Cape Town artist Izak Vollgraff will lead participants through a charcoal and pencil workshop designed for all skill
levels, ensuring maximum participation regardless of artistic experience. “Every line drawn helps raise vital funds,” organisers said, highlighting how creativity directly translates into conservation support.
The event, scheduled for 14:00-17:00 at Pearly Beach Resort’s Albatross Hall, offers exceptional value with tickets at R300 per person. Participants receive guided instruction, quality art materials, two glasses of premium Lomond Cape Agulhas Wines and a sponsored goodie bag from MOTHERKIND.

Klein Ovies pronk met modeparade
Mitzi Buys

The school wished to thank all the parents who contributed to making the day so special.
“From the beautiful décor to the fantastic team spirit and the absolutely delicious potjies you truly brought the ‘Around the World’ theme to life,” it said. “The vibe was unforgettable and the effort everyone put in was simply amazing.”
The winners of the day were India, France and Jamaica. The school was also grateful to the judges, Chef Shane Sauvage of La Pentola, Kobus Vermeulen, Executive head at Curro Hermanus, and Marius Pienaar.

“Ek is so trots op hulle almal,” sê Müller.
Students bring joy to learners
Laughter echoed across Lukhanyo Primary School in Zwelihle as 180 Grade R learners experienced a day of pure joy, thanks to the dedication of two Stellenbosch University Occupational Therapy students who transformed education into entertainment.
Carla Ferreira and Julia de Winnaar organised and hosted an exceptional Fun Day that combined celebration with crucial developmental support for the young learners. The carefully planned event featured six interactive stations, each strategically designed to promote fine and gross motor skills, balance, coordination, teamwork and cooperation, all essential building blocks for Grade R development.
“The day was filled with laughter, joy and unforgettable memories!” they reported, as children explored activities, participated in games, and celebrated together in an atmosphere of pure excitement.
The event’s success relied heavily on community support, with local businesses
stepping forward to make the day possible. Gateway Spar, Yorke Cash & Carry, Gateway BUCO, and Hermanus Senior Centre all contributed to creating this positive educational experience.
While celebrating the day’s success organisers highlighted critical ongoing needs at Lukhanyo Primary. The school urgently required funds and expertise to upgrade playground equipment essential for Grade R and Grade 1 gross motor development. Additionally, basic stationery supplies –pencils, erasers and crayons – are desperately needed to support fine motor skill development.
How to Help: Those wishing to donate can contact School Principal Morris Tshabalala at 028 312 1552 or Occupational Therapist Annetta Saaiman at 072 118 5683. This inspiring initiative demonstrates how university students can create meaningful community impact while addressing genuine educational challenges.

The chess world is buzzing with excitement as the 2026 Hermanus Chess Club Open Tournament prepares to make its triumphant return, promising the most competitive and lucrative chess event in the Western Cape’s club circuit.
Now entering its fourth year, what began as a local chess initiative has rapidly evolved into a hallmark of excellence that attracts top talent from across South Africa and beyond. The tournament, scheduled for 18 April at Curro Hermanus, has firmly established itself as a must-attend event on the national chess calendar.
This year’s tournament boasts an impressive R50 000 prize fund, the largest ever offered by a Western Cape club event. This substantial investment in chess excellence demonstrates the tournament’s commitment to elevating the standard of competitive play and attracting the country’s finest minds to the boards.
Tournament organisers anticipate participation from titled players, including International Masters and other high-level competitors, ensuring spectators will witness exceptional gameplay at its finest. The calibre of participants continues to rise each year, reflecting the tournament’s growing reputation within SA chess circles.
Beyond the fierce competition, the event promises to be a celebration of chess culture, with close to 300 participants expected along with their families, creating a vibrant atmosphere that showcases the game’s ability to bring communities together.

The prestigious Arabella Golf Course will host more than just exceptional golf on Thursday 30 April as the annual Unashamedly Ethical Charity Golf Day brings together South Africa’s business leaders and golf enthusiasts for a day that promises both sporting excellence and meaningful impact.
Nestled alongside the picturesque Bot River Lagoon, the internationally acclaimed venue consistently ranked among the country’s top golf courses, – will provide the backdrop for this unique tournament that combines championship-level golf with a powerful mission to promote ethical leadership across South Africa.
The event has already generated significant interest from the business community, with teams securing their spots early as word spreads about this compelling blend of sport and social responsibility. “We are deeply encouraged by the early support for this year's Golf Day,” says Gary Power, CEO of Unashamedly Ethical. “Events like this bring together people who believe that ethical leadership matters and who want to be part of building a stronger future for our country.”
The day will feature a four-ball alliance format, with registration opening at 09:30 and a shotgun start scheduled for 12:00. Organisers have crafted a comprehensive package that justifies the R9 500 entry fee per team, including green fees, golf carts, a halfway house lunch, dinner, prizegiving ceremony, goodie bags and several
sponsored “wet holes” strategically placed throughout the course.
The tournament represents more than just a day on the fairways; it’s a rallying point for South Africa’s business community to demonstrate their commitment to ethical leadership and integrity. Funds raised will directly support Unashamedly Ethical’s transformational work across schools, communities, boardrooms, and public institutions.
Through initiatives including Transformational Leadership programmes and youth development projects, the organisation equips individuals with both the tools and courage necessary to make ethical decisions and take principled stands against corruption.
Corporate participation extends beyond team entries, with businesses invited to partner through hole sponsorships, prize donations, and goodie bag contributions, creating multiple avenues for organisations to demonstrate their commitment to ethical leadership.
With Arabella’s reputation for hosting world-class golf events and the cause's growing momentum, organisers anticipate a sell-out event. Companies and individuals are strongly encouraged to secure their positions early to avoid disappointment.

Arabella Golf Course will host more than just exceptional golf on Thursday 30 April.
