Zwelihle makes demands

Zwelihle residents handed a memorundum of demands over to Overstrand Executive Mayor, Archie Klaas, calling for the removal of undocumented foreign nationals within the Overstrand.

This was the culmination of an anti-migration protest march on Friday 5 June, when about 100 residents marched to the Overstrand Municipality building.

The memorundum, a result of a petition signed by residents, was delivered to the Mayor and submitted by Thuthuka Foundation and called for the local council to “reopen broader public participation” on 12 key aspects.

These include “removing of undocumented illegal foreigners”, affordable green renewable energy community safety, affordable integrated housing as well as township safety.

“We believe these projects will address crime [and] unemployment and create sustainable economic growth for our communities,” read the memorundum.

The march was part of ongoing nationwide anti-immigration protests which have resulted in the repatriation of foreign nationals across the country. Just a few days after foreign nationals in Kleinmond were forced out of their homes and into the mountains with nowhere else to go.

This led to the establishment of the Integrated Command Centre (ICC) by the Overstrand/Overberg municipality in an effort to assist those displaced.

The owner reportedly told the South African nationals that they would be replaced by foreign nationals because “[foreign nationals] don’t go around starting problems and complaining about working conditions.”

Another claimed – with visible frustration – that her mother had lost her job when foreign nationals joined her workplace and she and her family had been struggling ever since.

“My mother has never got a job again after the foreigners arrived. We live in poverty while the foreigners have flat screens and drive cars they bought here in Hermanus.”

Another protester said she had applied for jobs everywhere she could and where she qualifies, without any shortlistings.

“I applied at the Traffic Department. I wrote an assessment test online. But I wasn’t shortlisted and yet I had met all the requirements for the various positions.

upon identity documentation and verification processes, the ICC and local Home Affairs officials reported that 90% of those in the temporary housing were undocmented.

BORDER MANAGEMENT

Meanwhile, the Head of Immigration and Law Enforcement for the South African Department of Home Affairs (DHA) and Deputy Assistant Commissioner for Operations at the Border Management Authority, Stephen van Neel, claimed that the current situation across the country is being used by various groups to advance their political agendas ahead of the local elections in November.

Van Neel said there were approximately 600 immigration officers deployed across

the country and that enforcement operations therefore depend heavily on cooperation between law-enforcement agencies and other government structures.

However, local residents (as well as those protesting in other parts of the country) argue that the protests are the result of “jobs being given to foreign nationals” over South African nationals as one of numerous reasons for the protests.

Speaking at the protest on Friday, one resident claimed that she was released from her job when a new owner bought the local company.

The ICC reported that since 6 June three buses from Kleinmond and two buses from Gansbaai, respectively, had left for Krugersdorp, where undocumented foreign nationals were to be processed by Home Affairs.

Thirty-eight displaced people were at the municipal farm in Hermanus and a bus organised by the Mozambican Embassy has arrived at a community hall in Stanford for Mozambican citizens.

With temporary municipal facilities closing temporarily in preparation for voter registration weekend those seeking repatriation assistance will have to make their own or alternative arrangements.

Voter, register 20-21 June

Voter registration for the 2026 local-government elections is set to take place on 20 and 21 June. The official registrations will take place at the respective registration stations across the country.

Local-government elections will be held on 4 November and the Overstrand Municipality has encouraged community members to register to vote and ensure that they are registered within their correct communities.

The voter registration weekend will also serve as the time for residents to either register to vote for the first time, confirm that they are registered correctly, update their address to allow them to vote in the right region and ensure that their voting details appear in the correct voting district.

Local political parties have emphasised the importance of the registration weekend.

“Residents who have recently moved into another area within the Overstrand are especially encouraged to verify that they are registered at the correct address to avoid losing [their] right to vote on

election day,” said Clinton Lerm, mayoral candidate.

He added that the participation of new residents in the Overstrand community is one of the many crucial ways in which they can help grow and shape the future of the community.

“Registration is not just a formality,” said Masizole Mnqasela, president of the

Alliance of Citizens for Change (A.C.C.). “It is a meaningful step that gives communities a voice in governance and the power to hold leaders accountable.”

The DA currently governs the Overstrand Municipality; however, Lern has encouraged residents to not become complacent, noting that “every vote remains important and strong voter participation is essential to ensure continued stable governance.”

Mnqasela said the elections are a chance for communities and community members to elect honest, capable and committed leaders who want to serve the public with integrity. He added it is a chance for the community to “remove leaders who have failed the people through corruption, poor leadership and incompetence.”

Onke Dabile of the Land Party said: “South Africans must understand that voting day is protest day, a day when people stand up against what they don't like and express their unhappiness.

“If you are unhappy about high municipal bills, auxies and water cuts, vote for a party that is against water cuts, auxies and high municipal bills [...] Voting is not just a culture or a norm; it is a powerful statement to achieve what you want.”

MEC visits Napier to support community

The Western Cape Minister of Community Safety, Anroux Marais, visited Napier on Tuesday 2 June, meeting with local safety stakeholders at the Napier Police station in what residents and safety volunteers described as a significant show of government support for rural community policing.

The visit drew a full turnout of safety partners, including members of the Neighbourhood Watch, Farm Watch, the Community Policing Forum (CPF) executive, Police officers, and various community safety volunteers - a gathering that underscored the breadth of collaboration underpinning safety efforts in the town and surroundings.

Marais was formally introduced to all safety partners before addressing the group. She thanked those present for their dedication and expressed encouragement at the scale of inter-sector cooperation she witnessed."Unity makes our response

The gathering at Napier is being viewed by local stakeholders as a milestone moment - confirmation that the town's network of safety volunteers has earned recognition at provincial government level. Cable theft continues

Another cable theft incident outside Hawston and vandalism in Villiersdorp has renewed concerns over the ongoing targeting of electrical infrastructure in the Overberg.

The incident was reported on 3 June and occured at Eskom's Maple Feeder near the new storage facility outside Hawston. Municipal officials warn that repeated acts of vandalism disrupt services, increase costs and place additional strain on already stretched resources.

"The ongoing theft and vandalism of electrical infrastructure in Hawston are seriously affecting residents, taxpayers, the municipality and other stakeholders," said Archie Klaas, Overstrand Executive Mayor.

In May, the numerous theft of overhead electrical connections in Chapel Street led to frequent power outages, service disruptions and growing frustration within the community.

Overstrand Municipal Manager, Dr Dean O'Neill says: "We are now also seeing incidents affecting the area around the new storage facilities and Eskom direct customers". He added that although repairs are constantly ongoing, "the problem persists due to ongoing criminal activity and a lack of community involvement in reporting suspicious behaviour".

Moreover, the Municipality urges residents to work with Eskom, the police and law enforcement by reporting suspicious activity immediately.

"Anyone who damages infrastructure, steals cables, makes illegal connections, or tampers with electrical equipment, can face criminal prosecution," says O'Neill.

Those found guilty for cable theft may face penalties which include up to 10 years' imprisonment, heavy fines or liability for damages.

VANDALISM

In another incident vandalism has occurred in Villiersdorp on Saturday, where electricity poles were deliberately cut down in the area near the Nature Reserve.

At this stage, the electricity supply remains on and the affected lines are still live. Residents are urged to exercise extreme caution and stay clear of the area. The South African Police Service (Saps), assisted by the Neighbourhood Watch, is currently pursuing suspects linked to the incident.

The Municipality has been in contact with its Electricity Department as well as Eskom to undertake emergency repairs, while standby Law Enforcement officers have been activated to support police operations.

"Residents are requested to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious behaviour or information that may assist authorities.

“Report suspicious activity to police or the Theewaterskloof Municipality toll-free number on 080 021 4730," the spokesperson said Electricity supply might be interrupted while repairs take place and according to Eskom there is currently no estimated time for restoration.

RAM supports entrepreneurship

Resources are often stretched, funding is limited and many people with disabilities across the Overberg continue to face barriers to equal opportunity. High unemployment, limited rural infrastructure and restricted access to specialised services remain ongoing challenges.

However, through collaborative partnerships meaningful change is possible. RAM Hand-to-Hand Couriers, together with Agape Church and the Eagles Nest Foundation Learning Centre, is supporting a new entrepreneurship initiative in Grabouw aimed at equipping people with disabilities with practical business skills and opportunities for sustainable livelihoods.

RAM supports disability-focused initiatives and also promotes socio-economic development through job creation and youth training programmes, including professional driving learnerships.

Representatives of RAM visited Grabouw on 28 May, when they committed to supporting 20 learners through a one-year programme focused on helping participants start and sustain their own businesses. According to Samantha Timm from Smartlearna Agape Church assisted in identifying learners for the initiative.

“We cannot thank RAM enough for what it is doing for us. This is a one-year programme to which the students must commit themselves, and RAM is funding this initiative. It is an incredible opportunity.”

Natiesha Karim of RAM described the initiative as a “Pay It Forward” project.

“We are committed to supporting greater inclusion and access to opportunity for people with disabilities. In many communities people with disabilities still face barriers to transport, employment and everyday access. This is one of the reasons we are undertaking these projects across the country.”

Karim explained that the programme focuses on creating sustainable opportunities through entrepreneurship and skills development. “People with disabilities may face unique barriers to employment and access to opportunity. Through entrepreneurship, we hope to support greater flexibility, independence and long-term sustainability. It is important to us that these businesses are sustainable and continue creating value well into the future.”

She added that the programme is designed not only to provide practical skills, but also to inspire others. “After receiving their certificates we hope participants will inspire others in their communities to pursue their goals, develop sustainable livelihoods and embrace new opportunities.”

For the 20 learners it was a memorable day filled with anticipation and hope as they completed their registration forms and looked forward to the year ahead, Timm said, “when you complete these

registration forms you are committing yourself to this programme for an entire year. Let us support one another and stand by one another so that together we can make this journey a success.”

Through Eagles Nest learners also have access to a computer centre and library. Timm invited Hermanus Times readers and local schools to support the initiative through book donations.

Hawston unites for children

The Thusong Centre in Hawston became a powerful symbol of community solidarity when it hosted the official launch of Child Protection Week on 25 May, bringing together government departments, schools, organisations, and community stakeholders under the theme, "Protecting Children is Everyone's Responsibility."

The programme opened with a prayer by Councillor Rugene Dees, followed by a warm welcome from Ward Councillor Arnie Africa, setting a meaningful and purposeful tone for the gathering.

Deputy Mayor Elnora Gillion reinforced the importance of collaboration in building safer environments for children across the region.

A highlight of the event was the address by Cynthia Booysen, Community Development Worker from the Department of Local Government, who spoke passionately about the Anti-Bullying and Child Empowerment Programme.

Role players at the launch of Child Protection week at the Thusong Centre in Hermanus included the Department of Social Development, Department of Local Government, Overstrand Municipality, APD, Right to Care, Overberg Wheelchair, Hawston Primary and Secondary Schools, and Pearly Shell.

Booysen urged communities, parents, schools, and leaders to work together to build a culture of dignity, protection, and resilience for every child.Representatives from Hawston Primary School and Hawston Secondary School shared real challenges faced by learners daily, while Right to Care and the Department of Social Development addressed broader social concerns affecting children in homes and communities.

The South African Police Service delivered a safety awareness message, reminding attendees of their shared responsibility in safeguarding the young.

The programme concluded with a powerful awareness walk through Hawston, where participants marched together in solidarity against bullying, violence, neglect, and abuse.

Elke kind verdien – en het die reg – om veilig, geliefd en beskermd groot te word. Nasionale kinderbeskermingsweek is in 1997 ingestel om bewusmaking van kinderregte te skep. Dit is die gemeenskap se verantwoordelikheid om die welsyn van kinders te verseker.

Kinderbeskermingsweek met die tema “Saamwerk om geweld teen kinders te beëindig” is van 29 Mei tot 5 Junie deur verskeie organisasies met bewusmakingsveldtogte gehou. Die Caledon-biblioteek het op 29 Mei sy veldtog om 07:30 by die veldjie oorkant Swartberg Primêr begin, waar hulle inligtingspamflette en groen strikkies aan ouers uitgedeel en ook kort gesprekke met hulle gevoer het.

LA skater rolls into Hermanus

It’s not everyday that a “famous” or social-media icon skates their way into Gansbaai’s award-winning shark-diving and eco-tourism experience. But when American skateboarder Jason Vanporppal visited Marine Dynamics on 30 May it was quite a special experience for the local staff, not to mention the skateboarder himself.

Vanporppal is a Los Angeles-born skateboarder who skated across Africa to raise funds for Uganda’s first permanant public skate park.

He joined the internationally acclaimed and award-winning Marine Dynamics for its Shark Cage Diving and Dyer Island Convention Experience along with a close friend.

For the staff of Marine Dy-

namics his presence was more than just a visit that honoured an invite; it brought two inspiring stories of positive impact. It was an experience that left the skateboarder “genuinely humbled and overwhelmed by the support” he received, according to Janine Taylor of Marine Dynamics

And like many other tourists he was “blown away” by South African cuisine, even if it was just South African pie.

“Before the trip our driver stopped so Jason could try a traditional South African meat pie for the first time,” said Taylor. “Having only ever known sweet pies, such as apple pie, he was pleasantly surprised by the experience.”

What’s more, he was genuinely humbled by the fame he found he enjoyed here and deeply moved by the idea that his journey could resonate so much with that of people in South Africa and that it can make a difference and inspire others.

“He spoke warmly about South Africa and experiencing the friendliness and kindness of the people he met along the way,” Taylor said.

One of the most anticipated highlights of Hermanus's packed June arts calendar is the Hermanus FynArts Festival, running from 6 to 14 June - and this year, long-time festival partner Strauss & Co is taking its involvement to an exciting new level. 30 under 30 for Strandveld Vineyards winemaker

Every harvest has been a lesson and every vintage an opportunity to grow for one of South Africa’s rising young wine stars.

For Esterina "Lienkie" Fourie, hard work, curiosity and a passion for winemaking has led to being named a 2026 Winelands Media 30 Under 30 Ambassador, a recognition of her growing contribution to the country’s wine industry.

The assistant winemaker at Strandveld Vineyards was recognised as one of South Africa’s young professionals making a meaningful contribution to its wine industry while representing the future of wine through innovation, dedication and leadership.

She joined Strandveld Vineyards in 2024 as an assistant to cellar master Conrad Vlok and has since grown into an integral member of the winemaking team. Fourie’s passion for wine, commitment to learning and hands-on approach in both the vineyard and cellar have seen her quickly establish herself as one

of the industry's rising stars.

“Seeing Lienkie receive this recognition is incredibly rewarding,” said Vlok. “She has shown exceptional dedication, curiosity and determination. Her willingness to learn and her passion for our craft makes her a deserving recipient of this honour.”

For her the recognition is both humbling and motivating. “It is an incredible honour to be selected as a Winelands Media 30 Under 30 Ambassador.

Kaasmaker vertel oor haar passie

Dit is duidelik – Suid-Afrika, en veral die Overberg – pronk met kaasmakers van wêreldgehalte. Van bokkaas tot plaaslike jerseykaas – in die Overberg kraai kaas koning.

Kay-Marie Swart, ’n kaasmaker van die Stonehouse-kaaslandgoed buite Stanford, is een van die kaasmakers van die Overberg wat die streek se naam hoog hou. Haar “kaasmaak-reis” het begin toe sy as kind die jersey-kalwers op die plaas met ’n bottel help grootmaak het. “Daar het ek geleer hoe om na die diere om te sien en later het ek self die koeie gemelk. Die hele proses het my geleer om suiwel te waardeer en gehalte na te streef.”

kaas, die geure en tradisionele metodes tot die nuutste prosesse oor hoe om kaas te maak. Een ding wat my na aan die hart lê, is die gehalte van die kaas en met elke kaas wat ons maak, wil ek graag die beste gehalte vir ons klante gee.”

Vandag is Kay-Marie die hoof van produksie en in beheer van die reeks kase wat Stonehouse vervaardig – van sagte witskimmelkase soos camembert en brie tot die harde verouderde kase soos pecorino, boerenkaas en bergkaas asook semiharde kase soos cajun, Italiaanse kruie, swartpeter en knoffel en grasuie. Stonehouse en Kay-Marie se passie vir kaas het hulle al verskeie pryse in die sak gebring.

“Ons het in Mei vanjaar ’n dekade gevier sedert die opening van Stonehouse-kaasfabriek,” vertel sy. “Wat vir my begin het as die versorging van kalwers, het gegroei tot ’n volledige plaas-tot-kaas-bedryf. Elke stap – van produksie tot die kaasbord – word met die hand en met sorg gedoen.”

Kay-Marie sê sy het die afgelope dekade beduidende veranderings in die suiwelbedryf gesien – veral in die kaasmaak-proses. “Dit was gewoonlik ’n tipies manlike, ouderwetse rol,” sê sy. “Maar die bedryf het die afgelope 10 tot 15 jaar ’n werklike verskuiwing ervaar.

“Vandag word baie van die kleinskaalse kaasproduksie deur vroue bedryf.” Volgens haar lei sy toenemend op gebiede soos mikrobiologie, rypingsbeheer en geurontwikkeling.

“Die vordering wat ek opgemerk het, is onder meer dat meer vroue hul eie suiwelondernemings besit.”

Sy moedig ook jonger vroue aan om hul voete in die bedryf te vind en beveel aan dat hulle nie net die proses onder die knie moet kry nie, maar ook die sakekant. “Jy moet dit sien as een – as jy ’n passie het om kaas te maak, moet jy ook die passie hê om jou kaas te kan bemark en te verkoop.”

Sy is ook nie bang om haar kennis met ander te deel nie. “Ek wil dit wat ek geleer het, graag met ander deel – veral vroue. Vroue het ’n natuurlike aanvoeling vir die bedryf en ek wil dit graag met hulle deel.”

Kay-Marie se dae is opwindend en soos sy dit stel, is elke dag anders. Elke week beplan sy produksieroosters en kyk na die voorraad in die koelkamers voordat sy met die kaasmaak-proses begin.

“Om kaas te maak, is tydsberekening van kardinale belang. Om kaas te maak vereis die balansering van wetenskap en instink. Instink kan jy net deur ervaring kry en die wetenskap is dit wat jou van foute weghou. Daardie presiese balans maak dat jou kaas goed is.”

Vra jy haar oor wat haar gunstelingmaniere is oor hoe om kaas te gebruik, vertel sy sonder om te skroom: “Gebakte camembert bedruip met heuning en kruie; sagte kaas tot ’n hartige smeersel geklop vir suurdeegbroodroosterbrood en goeie kaas eenvoudig deur warm pasta gevou met swartpeper en ’n bietjie pastawater om ’n eenvoudige romerige sous te skep!”

For the young sport stars at Zwelihle Primary School, stepping onto a sports field meant playing a sport without a proper kit – until the Alam family changed that by donating new soccer and netball kits.

Alam Transport donated the kits to the school on Wednesday 20 May as part of giving back to the community that has supported their business over the years. This is according to Sinazo Alam, a representative of the family.

For over 20 years, Alam Transport was led by the late Julia and Jeffrey Alam, providing transportation to local commuters. The donation of the kits is just another way of giving back while inspiring hope to the young athletes and youth of the community.

“[We are] donating these outfits to the school as part of giving hope to our future soccer stars and netball players,” says Alam, adding that this is for the “children who [see] an opportunity to become a soccer star in the future”.

The handover, which took place at the school premises, saw learners receive new game sport kits with teachers and representatives from the family in attendance. Hermanus Times also attended.

For Zwelihle Primary, the donation is more than just kits and uniform for the field. It is a sporting identity that they will not have to borrow anymore, according to the school principal, Nceba Laphi.

“We mainly depend on the sponsors,” he says. “When we played the competitions, we had to get the kit then because

Two schools get sports kit

as the young athletes wore their new kits with pride.

“We are very excited. We waited for this day that [the Alam family] promised us,” says Laphi. “We knew that they would make it happen, but we were so excited because it was for the first time that we get our own kits.”

Zwelihle Primary School is the second school to receive kit donations from the Alam family and Alam Transportation.

Just days prior, Lukhanyo Primary School, a school once overcrowded with learners prior to the establishment of Zwelihle Primary in April 2010, received their brand-new sport kits sponsored by Alam Transport.

In the area, most of the schools receive sponsorships for kits during games, which they often must give back for the next school teams to use when it is their turn to play, according to Laphi.

“We don’t have the luck to get sponsorships for kits that become ours. So, this was the first time that we get the kit especially in our area,” he says.
