ie Laerskool Riebeek-Kasteel verwelkom die eerste keer in 152 jaar ’n vroulike skoolhoof, Isabella Geldenhuys.

Geldenhuys (46), ’n gebore Noord-Kapenaar wat haar skoolloopbaan aan die Hoërskool Diamantveld in Kimberley afgesluit het, het sommer vroeg in haar lewe geweet sy wil eendag ’n onderwyseres word terwyl sy as jong meisie graag skool-skool gespeel het. Ná matriek het sy die pad na die WesKaap gekies en as ’n student by KPUT se Wellington-kampus aangesluit, waar sy haar graad in onderwys verwerf het. Haar eerste pos as onderwyseres was by die Laerskool Drakenstein. Kort daarna het sy die liefde van haar lewe ontmoet en na Riebeek-Kasteel verhuis. Gelukkig was daar ook talle skole en sy het in 2006 as ’n graad 4-onderwyseres by die Laerskool Riebeek-Kasteel begin. Ná agt jaar as ’n gr.-4-juffrou het Geldenhuys ’n nuwe uitdaging gesoek en die gr.-6leerders begin onderrig. In 2018 was sy op soek na nog ’n uitdaging en het vir die departementshoof se pos aansoek gedoen. Die soeke na ’n volgende uitdaging het haar verlede jaar wéér aan die enkels kom beetkry. Met die aftrede van die skool se voormalige hoof, het Geldenhuys vir dié geleentheid gespring. Sy dien egter al sedert verlede jaar in Augustus as waarnemende skoolhoof. “Ek was so verlig nadat die nuus aan my bekend gemaak is,” vertel sy opgewonde en met groot dankbaarheid. Haar toekomsdrome vir die skool is groot en tasbaar nadat sy reeds hard aan haar visie vir die Laerskool RiebeekKasteel gewerk het. Volgens haar behoort dié laerskool ’n plek vir die gemeenskap te wees en nie net bloot as “’n klein skooltjie" in die platteland beskou te word nie. Sy meen dit is nodig om vooruit te dink. “Die skool moet eksklusief wees.” Geldenhuys is veral opgewonde oor die gevestigde Eight Feet-koffiewaentjie op die

skoolterrein, waar ouers soggens reg kan begin en waar kommunikasie plaasvind. Dit is ook nie noodwendig meer nodig vir leerders om hul tuisdorp te verlaat en elders skool te gaan nie. Hier kan jy selfs “graad vang”. Geldenhuys brei uit en vertel hoe akademie reeds op kleutervlak by hul kleuterskool, Kasteeltjies, begin, wat ook dien as ’n nasorg, wegspring, gevolg deur Graad R en laerskoolonderrig. Die laerskool het nie ’n hoërskool nie en ouers word daarom genoodsaak om hul kinders by skole buite hul tuisdorp in te skryf. Vir dié leerders is tuisondererig nou ’n opsie danksy die teenwoordigheid van

Brave Generation Academy, wat sy deure in Januarie vanjaar in samewerking met die laerskool geopen het. Hoewel die akademiese sentrum die Amerikaanse en Britse kurrikulum volg, is die nasionale onderwysdepartement se kurrikulum – beter bekend as Caps – ook in die pyplyn. SPORT OOK NOU DEEL Die hoërskoolleerders het ook nie meer nodig om hul liefde vir sport prys te gee nie nadat Geldenhuys met die skoolhoofde van nabygeleë plaaslike hoërskole in verbinding getree het, wat dié Kastelers in staat stel om hul skole op sportvlak te

verteenwoordig. Tot tersiêre onderrig is reg hier in die vallei beskikbaar. Die laerskool het in ’n plasing bevestig hulle beskou Geldenhuys se aanstelling as ’n besonderse mylpaal in die geskiedenis van die Laerskool Riebeek Kasteel. “In die 152-jarige bestaan van ons skool maak Geldenhuys geskiedenis deur die eerste vroulike skoolhoof te wees. “Haar aanstelling is ’n bewys van haar toewyding, leierskap, passie vir onderwys en onwrikbare verbintenis tot die ontwikkeling van ons leerders en die breër skoolgemeenskap. Ons sien met groot vertroue uit na die nuwe hoofstuk onder haar.”

764 targets children online Charlotte Lesch A network that began with a teenager in Texas has evolved into a decentralised “online ecosystem” spanning countries and platforms — raising concerns about the growing threat of child exploitation and sextortion, including for South African families. Founded by a 15-year-old Texas teenager, it has grown into what researchers describe as a global and decentralised online ecosystem associated with sextortion, child sexual exploitation, hacking and other criminal activity. The violent international online network known as “764” has reached South Africa following the arrest of a 16-year-old teenager in Malmesbury on 17 August. The teen’s arrest highlights the networks global spread from the US. The 16-year-old, accused of child sexual abuse material offences and animal abuse, has been sent for a 30-day mental observation at Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital. The case was postponed at Malmesbury magistrates’ court on Tuesday, 1 September, marking the teenager’s third court appearance since his arrest in August. He will return to court on 5 October, confirmed National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila. The teenager faces charges of accessing, possession, facilitation and downloading of child sexual abuse material, as well as animal abuse. WHAT IS THE 764 NETWORK? The 764 network represents what researchers describe as a decentralised, global network of online communities that targets and exploits vulnerable people, particularly children. According to the Anti-Defamation League, the network emerged from a broader online environment where individuals and groups were involved in activities including hacking, swatting, SIM swapping, sextortion and distribution of child sexual abuse material. The network was founded by Bradley Cadenhead in 2020, according to the BBC. Cadenhead was arrested in August 2021 and was later sentenced in the United States to 80 years in prison. He launched his online community on the social platform Discord when he was 15 years old, calling it “764” because he lived in Stephenville, Texas, where the postal code begins with the numbers 764. Since the launch, the network has become a global movement, with an array of offshoots and subgroups that often rebrand and change their names to evade social media companies and law enforcement.

What makes 764 particularly concerning is that it does not operate like a conventional organisation with a single leader or headquarters. The network has become an umbrella term for groups that share similar methods and online culture. HOW THE NETWORK OPERATES Members employ tactics described as Sadistic Online Exploitation. Predators seek out children online through mobile messaging apps, social media and gaming platforms. FBI Special Agent Alan Karr warned parents that after identifying a potential target, these predators methodically attempt to befriend potential victims through a grooming process that often includes establishing a trusting or romantic relationship. The goal is to manipulate and threaten the child into producing and sharing child sexual abuse material, acts of animal cruelty, self-harm or violence. FBI Dallas Assistant Special Agent in Charge Robbie Manson provided an overview of the growing threat from members of violent online networks in a statement earlier this year. “Although the names of these networks are constantly changing, their activities remain the same: They seek to coerce and manipulate minor victims into harming themselves, animals and other minors.” Members of 764 are sometimes motivated by a type of ideology called Nihilistic Violent Extremism, or a desire to sow chaos. They build trust with victims and later coerce them into sharing personal information and explicit pictures and videos, which are then used to blackmail victims into creating additional content depicting escalating sexual and violent behaviour. GLOBAL REACH AND WARNINGS The FBI is currently investigating more than 450 subjects tied to 764 and other violent online networks. In an ABC News interview in 2025, FBI Assistant Director David Scott, the head of the FBI’s Counterterrorism Division, which is now leading many of the US government’s investigations tied to 764, said they have seen victims as young as nine, and federal authorities have indicated there could be thousands of victims worldwide. This fact was confirmed after the 16-year-old teen’s arrest in a rural town in the Western Cape. The police advises young people not to share sexually explicit images and to tell a trusted adult if someone online pressures or threatens them. Following the Malmesbury teenager’s arrest, talks on internet dangers have been held at primary and high schools across the Swartland.

‘Beligting sou botsing kon keer’ Charlotte Lesch ’n 56-jarige ma van Piketberg en haar dogter (33) se naweek het vinnig in ’n nagmerrie ontaard nadat hulle onlangs in ’n botsing op die N7-snelweg tussen die Riebeek-Wes en die Moorreesburgafdraai in die rigting van Malmesbury betrokke was. Die botsing het op Vrydag 4 September omstreeks 19:05 gebeur kort nadat die bestuurder van ’n wit enkelkajuitbakkie met ’n kappie op volgens inligting vanuit Moorreesburg op die N7-snelweg gedraai het. Die bakkie het kort daarna in die baan van die aankomende verkeer oorbeweeg. Elana van Biljon en haar dogter het die voertuig sien aankom. Volgens Van Biljon het sy kopgehou en ’n botsing probeer vermy deur uit die pad te beweeg. Dit was egter te laat en die bakkie het haar voertuig aan die agterkant getref. Die bestuurder het na bewering teen ’n hoë spoed gery. Van Biljon vertel sy het tot stilstand gekom. Die bestuurder van die voertuig wat hulle gestamp het, het egter aangery en by Riebeek-Wes se afdraai ingery. Benewens die skok van die ongeluk, kon Van Biljon nie sien watter skade aan hul onderneming se voertuig aangerig is nie. Die gebrek aan beligting was vir haar opvallend en daarom het sy besluit om na die weegbrug, duskant die tweede afdraai uit Moorreesburg, te ry om hulp te gaan soek. Die hekke van die weegbrug se terrein was oop, maar geen provinsiale verkeerspersoneel was ten tyde die voorval teenwoordig nie. Daar was wel genoeg lig. Die personeel by die weegbrug het vinnig gereageer en haar dogter gehelp om die polisie te ontbied. Terwyl hulle op die polisie gewag het, het hulle die skade aan hul voertuig bestudeer. ’n Polisievoertuig met sy sirenes aan het egter op die N7-snelweg verby hulle gery. “My dogter het die polisie weer gebel, wat haar in kennis gestel het hulle is op pad na ’n ongelukstoneel naby die Riebeek-Wes-afdraai. My dogter het haar vermoedens met die polisie gedeel en gesê dat dit heel waarskynlik dieselfde voertuig is wat hulle getref het.” VAN BAKBOORD NA STUURBOORD Die polisie het kort daarna by die weegbrug aangekom, foto’s van hul voertuig geneem én Van Biljon se besonderhede, insluitend haar ID en bestuurslisensie. Die betrokke beampte het kort daarna vir hulle gesê dit is beter om die voorval by die Piketberg-polisiekantoor aan te meld. Met die Van Biljons se aankoms by die polisiekantoor om 09:00 die volgende oggend is hulle aangeraai om die botsing eerder by die Moorreesburg-polisiekantoor aan te meld, omdat dit hulle glo ses maande tot ’n jaar lank sal neem om die saak na Moorreesburg oor te plaas. Van Biljon het die Maandagaand na die Moorreesburg-polisiekantoor teruggekeer om die voorval uiteindelik aan te meld en

Herpes virus kills sardines along 2 600km of coast The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) has confirmed that South Africa is experiencing widespread sardine deaths caused by the pilchard herpesvirus (PHV). This marks the first time PHV has been detected in dead South African sardines, according to a statement from the department. Scientists confirmed the virus through polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing and sequencing in sardines from several locations, including Gqeberha. FIRST DETECTION IN SOUTH AFRICA PHV is a virus associated with sardines. In previous outbreaks in Australia and New Zealand, the virus caused gill damage and inflammation, leading to breathing problems and mass deaths. While scientists have confirmed the virus’s genetic material in South African sardines, investigations are still underway to determine if it is the direct cause of the current deaths. strandings is vast – approximately 2 600km from Hentiesbaai to the northern Wild Coast. By 28 August, around 160 samples had been submitted, of which about 128 have been processed. Testing and pathology investigations continue. INVESTIGATION ONGOING The DFFE is investigating other possible contributing factors, including harmful algal blooms and toxins, low oxygen levels, colder water, upwelling, pollution, fisheries and other environmental stressors. The department emphasised that there is currently no evidence that PHV can infect other fish species such as anchovies or humans. The Namibian stranding case is being investigated but has not yet been attributed to PHV. A high-level PHV task team is coordinating the response to the incident and met on Tuesday 8 September. The DFFE is working with provincial authorities, municipalities, the South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity (SAIAB), Rhodes University, industry partners and Namibian counterparts. The department plans a hydroacoustic survey for October or November to determine the sardine biomass after the incident. Preliminary assessment does not indicate that a large portion of the overall sardine stock has died, but estimates are highly uncertain and the incident may continue. SAFETY WARNINGS FOR PUBLIC The DFFE and the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS) have confirmed that commercially produced canned sardines remain safe to eat. However, the public is strongly warned not to pick up, handle or eat dead or dying sardines found on beaches or in the sea. These fish should also not be fed to pets, as decomposition and contamination pose health risks. Recreational anglers must comply with fishing regulations and may not use dead or visibly unhealthy sardines as bait. The department has asked the public to rely on official DFFE updates rather than unverified information on social media.

All sectors must prepare for Enso

Western Cape Premier Alan Winde has urged farmers, agricultural organisations, municipalities and government to prepare now for the potential impacts of a strengthening El Niño Southern Oscillation (Enso) on the province. He made the call on Friday 11 September, while addressing Western Cape agriculture-sector stakeholders at Nampo Cape in Bredasdorp. “For our agricultural sector preparation cannot wait until summer is upon us. “Farmers, producers, agricultural organisations, municipalities and our government must all take the necessary steps now to reduce risks and protect livelihoods in this critical sector of our economy.” PLANNING NOW COULD HELP REDUCE THE RISKS The province’s experience in recent years had reinforced the importance of planning ahead for the growing impacts of climate change, including Enso, Winde said. Enso is a global climate cycle driven by changes in ocean temperatures in the Pacific Ocean. While the phenomenon originates thousands of kilometres away associated changes can influence weather patterns around the world. According to the Western Cape government Enso is currently in an El Niño state and is expected to strengthen over the coming months. While the most significant impacts of El Niño in South Africa are generally experienced in summer-rainfall regions the Western Cape can also face associated risks, including higher temperatures, increased wildfire risk and additional pressure on water resources.

MORE THAN 200 000 HA HIT BY FIRES The province has already experienced the devastating effects of severe fires, with more than 200 000 ha of land affected by wildfires during the previous fire season. Winde said preparedness needed to extend across the province and all sectors. “Whether you are in agriculture, education, health care, local government or any other sector we must all be prepared.” He urged those living and working in areas with a higher fire risk to take practical steps, including clearing vegetation, maintaining firebreaks, managing biomass and removing invasive alien plants. Western Cape Minister of Agriculture, Economic Development and Tourism Dr Ivan Meyer echoed the call for preparedness. FIVE MEASURES TO SUPPORT THE SECTOR “Our farmers have already demonstrated their ability to adapt to difficult climate conditions, including the severe 2014-’16 drought period,” he said. Meyer said the current response needed to recognise the seriousness of reduced rainfall, higher temperatures and pressure on water resources. The Department of Agriculture will implement several interventions in partnership with stakeholders to reduce the impact of Enso on agricultural production, food security and the provincial economy. These include strengthening conservation agriculture practices, improving water-use efficiency in irrigated areas and prioritising support for dryland production areas. The department will also strengthen risk management and preparedness systems and provide support to agricultural workers.

Sport Enter Paarlberg Half now On Saturday, 26 September 2026, the Paarlberg Half Marathon returns to Paarl, bringing with it more than nine decades of running tradition and a unique opportunity to celebrate the heritage of one of South Africa's most historic sporting events. First run in 1935, the Paarlberg Half Marathon is one of South Africa's oldest road-running races, second only to the Comrades Marathon in longevity. For generations the Paarlberg has been part of the sporting fabric of the community. The 2026 event takes place during a new date in Heritage Month, making the occasion particularly fitting. Heritage Month is about celebrating the history, culture and traditions that have shaped South Africa, and the Paarlberg Half Marathon is itself a living piece of that heritage. Boland Krieket het verlede Maandagaand (7September) by die Grande Rochelandgoed in die Paarl met mening gewys hy is gereed om ’n nuwe era aan te pak toe die unie sy 2026-’27-seisoen met ’n stylvolle skemerkelkiegeleentheid bekendgestel het. Spelers, borge, rolspelers en ondersteuners het vir die glansgeleentheid saamgetrek en die boodskap was duidelik: Boland se ambisie strek verder as blote deelname. Die grootste aankondiging van die aand was die bekendstelling van Dafabet as Boland Krieket se nuwe hoofborg – ’n vennootskap wat ’n belangrike nuwe hoofstuk vir streekskrieket inlui. Dit was nie net die nuwe naam op die span se trui wat die gesprekke oorheers het nie. Die terugkeer van die Protea-snelbouler Lizaad Williams, die voortsetting van Justin Ontong se termyn as hoofafrigter en die aanwysing van Glenton Stuurman as kaptein het verdere gewig aan ’n aand van groot verwagtinge verleen.
