Swart-Maandag-groep stap

As the world observed World Mental Health Day on 10 October, the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness is reaffirming its commitment to making mental health care accessible to all residents.

This year’s theme, “Access to services – mental health in catastrophes and emergencies,” underscores the importance of ensuring that everyone can protect their mental health and access support when they need it most.

In the Western Cape, this commitment extends beyond annual observances. Mental health care has become an integral part of the provincial health system, with services embedded in clinics, hospitals, and communities. The department continues to promote a holistic approach to wellness, recognising that caring for mental health is vital to caring for the whole person mind and body alike.

“Good mental health is the foundation for a good life. It affects how we learn, work, love, and connect with one another,” said Western Cape Minister of Health and Wellness, Mireille Wenger “During times of difficulty, access to mental health services is more important than ever. That is why we continue to invest in services and infrastructure that support healing, build resilience, and strengthen communities.”

EXPANDINGACCESSACROSSCOMMUNITIES

Mental health screening and support have been integrated into routine primary health care. Residents can access counselling, treatment, and referrals at local clinics and community health centres daily Trained nurses and clinicians identify early signs of distress, depression, or anxiety and connect individuals to the appropriate level of care

Support for young people remains a priority through Youth Zones, which provide safe, youth-friendly spaces for connection and access to healthcare. School health teams and community outreach programmes also extend these services

To meet growing mental health needs, the province is expanding its infrastructure. New acute psychiatric units are currently under construction at Eerste River, Khayelitsha, and New Somerset hospitals, adding 90 new beds in the coming months. The Child and Adolescent Unit at Lentegeur Hospital has also been upgraded to include a new 10-bed ward.

Further upgrades to mental health wards and seclusion rooms across facilities in Clanwilliam, Swartland, Oudtshoorn, Caledon, Hermanus, Ceres, and Robertson are improving safety and care environments for recovery.

COLLABORATIVECAREFORSURVIVORSOF VIOLENCE

The Department’s partnerships with the Departments of Social Development, Education, and the South African Police Service, along with NGOs and faithbased organisations, extend mental health care beyond hospitals. At Thutuzela Care Centres in rural and regional hospitals, survivors of violence and gender-based harm receive trauma-informed care, including psychological first aid and ongoing mental health support.

Enhancing numeracy at Foundation Phase

In an effort to tackle the learning outcomes of learners in the Foundation Phase the Western Cape Education Department has launched a pilot intervention to support numeracy across all Foundation Phase teachers and learners in the province

This follows the success of its early grade-reading interventions for Grades 1, 2 and 3

As part of the pilot all Grade 1 teachers at 70 schools from across the province received training this month

A full rollout with training for the remaining Grade 1 teachers in the province will follow next year, and is planned to cover the full Foundation Phase over the next 3 years

The pilot phase will reach 225 teachers, while the total Foundation Phase roll-out will ultimately see training provided to approximately 10 000 teachers across three languages The programme constitutes a direct investment in our Foundation Phase teachers, which will in turn improve the learning outcomes of the children they teach

The numeracy programme has been developed in partnership with Funda Wande, with the support of its “Bala Wande” programme

In addition to the teacher training, the schools will receive teacher guides, learner books and maths resource kits to support the new teaching

skills, including items such as flashcards, posters and physical objects that can be used to demonstrate mathematical concepts

“Early learning is a key priority for the Western Cape Government and our investment in the Foundation Phase seeks to ensure every learner has a solid foundation in Language and Mathematics before moving on to Grade 4

“Without this foundation learners will struggle to catch up in later grades, affecting their chances of successfully completing their school career

The Western Cape High Court has delivered a significant victory for provincial transport authorities, dismissing taxi association Codeta’s urgent interdict application and validating the government’s decision to close several contentious minibus taxi routes in the name of commuter safety

’N DIENS OP TUISBODEM

Volgens hom moes Suid-Afrika voorheen noodgedwonge die meeste van hul wol uitvoer sodat dit by oorseese wolverwerkingsaanlegte – hoofsaaklik in China – skoongemaak en verwerk kon word, waarna dit weer ten duurste ingevoer moes word omdat die land geen grootskaalse aanlegte besit het nie

Nou het Suid-Afrikaanse boere immers die opsie om hul wol plaaslik te verwerk, waarna Gerber & Co die wol vir die boer kan terugggee om dit dan self te verkoop
