Fatal bike crash

A fatal collision at a busy Somerset West intersection claimed the life of a 32-year-old motorcyclist last Thursday morning (29 January).

Warrant Officer Suzan Jantjies, spokesperson for Somerset West police, confirmed that the incident occurred around 09:45 at the intersection of Winery and Raithby roads.

According to Jantjies, the motorcyclist was travelling on a black BMW along Winery Road towards the R44, when he reportedly attempted to overtake a truck moving in the same direction.

At the same time, the driver of an old white Toyota Corolla station wagon was turning into Raithby Road, resulting in a collision between the motorcycle and the vehicle.

The motorcyclist was apparently flung from the bike when it crashed into the rear of the vehicle.

Emergency services and Somerset West police responded to the accident, where the 32-year-old died at the scene from serious injuries.

Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide following the accident. No arrests have been made.

Cableway backed by most residents

An independent Ipsos poll commissioned by the developers of the proposed Franschhoek Cableway has found strong overall support for the project among local residents, with nearly twothirds of respondents indicating they are strongly in favour of the development.

According to Prof David Venter, a specialist in negotiation, conflict resolution and leadership appointed by the Franschhoek Cableway to engage with both supporters and opponents of the project, the independent Ipsos poll showed overwhelming support for the project, with 64% of Franschhoek residents strongly in favour.

However, concerns were also raised by older members of the community.

IPSOS POLL

The study, conducted over a 12-week period, surveyed a scientifically-selected sample of 500 Franschhoek residents aged 18 and older.

Ipsos used in-person, computer-assisted personal interviews conducted at high-traffic locations across the town, supported by a community outreach and pre-booking process to ensure accessibility and broad participation.

According to a summary of the poll supplied to Eikestadnuus, the methodology was designed to be both inclusive and representative of the town’s diverse population.

Interviews were conducted in English, Afrikaans and isiXhosa, the final sample comprising 400 South African citizens and 100 non-South African residents.

Business owners accounted for 74 respondents across a wide range of sectors.

The poll found that around seven in 10 respondents were in favour of the aerial cableway, with nearly two-thirds indicating strong support.

Approximately half of those surveyed believe the development would have a positive impact on their households, while 78% expected it to result in job creation and wider economic benefits.

Support was broadly consistent across

race, gender, education and employment status, particularly among tourism-related businesses such as accommodation, food and beverage, transport and retail.

However, opposition was notably higher among older residents, with about 30% of respondents aged 55 and over strongly opposed to the project.

While many residents view the cableway as an opportunity to stimulate tourism and economic growth, a minority raised concerns about potential negative impacts.

These include increased traffic congestion, noise pollution, strain on local infrastructure and possible damage to the natural environment and Franschhoek’s character.

Ipsos noted that although overall sentiment is positive, further acceptance of the project will depend on clear and credible mitigation measures addressing traffic management, environmental protection and preservation of the town’s aesthetic and community identity.

Venter urged anyone wishing to review the study to contact him directly.

He added that the 500 participants interviewed exceeded the sample size typically required to ensure a fair and representative reflection of sentiment within the town.

TRAFFIC CONGESTION

Venter explained that one of the mitigation measures the developers of the Franschhoek Cableway will, on approval from the Department of Forestry, Fisher-

ies and the Environment (DFFE), adopt is the construction of the Robbertsvlei Road that would be upgraded for the cableway’s mandatory shuttle service.

He explained that it would be compulsory for visitors to the cableway to park at a designated parking spot outside the town whereafter shuttles would pick clients up and drop them off at the base of the cableway at Haute Cabrière.

FRANSCHHOEK CABLEWAY

Venter said the project is expected to cost approximately R500 million and that, following a two-year period since its launch, all supporting documentation –including the required impact assessments – will be submitted to the department in June.

Afterwards, the project will again be advertised for a 30-day public comment period.

He noted that the public continued to refer to the development as the “Skytram”, despite the project's having been rebranded several months ago.

The development is now officially known as the Franschhoek Cableway, with Pieter Graaff named as one of the developers. Graaff, who also co-owns the Table

Apply for arts and cultural funding

The provincial Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport has opened its annual call for funding applications for organisations and individuals in the arts and culture sector.

Funding is available in various categories, including cultural tourism, literature, film, language promotion and preservation and the performing arts. The criteria and categories for funding as well

as application forms are available online.

“The arts and culture sector plays a crucial role in the Western Cape in creating job opportunities, bringing visitors to our province and growing our local economy,”

Ricardo Mackenzie, provincial minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, said. “We have a wealth of talent in our province and we are committed to supporting our local

artists and organisations in this sphere to ensure they continue their work.”

Applications for funding close on Monday 9 March at 23:59. Applicants are urged to submit at least 24 to 48 hours before the deadline. Applications received the closing date will not be considered.

Mountain Aerial Cableway, is one of South Africa’s largest soft fruit producers. He is also involved in the country’s wine industry.

According to Venter the project has evolved since it was first introduced to the public in February 2024.

One of the key changes includes the relocation of the upper station within the Mount Rochelle Nature Reserve further back from the ridge line to reduce its visual impact and avoid obstructing the natural scenery.

Venter further emphasised that noise pollution during construction would be kept to a minimum.

Helicopters transporting materials to the upper cable station will operate from the far side of Mount Rochelle, flying routes that face away from the town.

He added that a trust for the Franschhoek community will be established as part of the project. While further details are not yet available, more information will be shared in due course.

In addition, Venter said the Franschhoek Cableway has introduced a public awareness initiative, which includes placing informational stickers on the rear windows of taxis operating in the town.

Renewing vows after 70 years

Being blessed with a partner for seven decades is an extraordinary milestone.

To celebrate the occasion, George Ludwig and Ingrid Isolde Elsa Kiblböck, 92 and 89 years old respectively, renewed their wedding vows at Hospicare, where they live, surrounded by family, devoted carers and friends.

George and Ingrid were both born in Munich, Bavaria during World War II, where they first caught each other’s eye as apprentices in 1953. George, an electro-mechanical engineer, was taken with the “beautiful young woman with golden hair” and Ingrid remembered a tall, dark-haired George entering the elevator she was in.

The two crossed paths again at a social gathering and found they were part of the same youth club and lived in the same neighbourhood.

“What struck me most, was his kind-heartedness, honesty and good humour,” Ingrid says.

George says, aside from his her beauty, it was Ingrid’s gentleness and warm nature that won his heart.

The couple’s first date was a walk in the park. Despite the winter chill on the day, they ended up on a bench overlooking Munich.

George wasted no time; he declared his love right then and there as he held Ingrid’s ice-cold hand. The feeling was mutual and three years later, on 27 January, they were wed.

Both devout Christians, they came from different church denominations, Catholic and Lutheran, which presented a problem for having a church wedding, so the two opted for a civil wedding.

For their anniversary, the parish priest of the local St Nicholas Catholic church, Father Wim Lindeque, offered to solemnise their marriage.

Just two weeks after the wedding, George packed his bags for Johannes-

burg, where he had accepted an engineering post. Ingrid left Germany six months later, travelling to South Africa by sea.

There the couple had two daughters and three grandchildren. Their being in Stellenbosch was specifically to be closer to their family here.

The Kiblböcks say their marriage is founded on values that are not diluted by the content of social media or the internet, as tends to be the case nowadays.

For married couples hoping to make it to 70 years they encourage face-to-face communication without distraction, being fully present, listening deeply and giving each other undivided attention. This, to them, lays the foundation of a happy and enduring life together, “a lesson today’s youth can learn from”.

The lovebirds say their marriage is grounded in honesty, integrity, trust and an unwavering commitment, a love set to inspire future generations.

Market operations again suspended

The Dorp Street Sunday Market has again been suspended by the Stellenbosch Municipality.

Last week, organisers of the popular shared a statement explaining that municipal officials conducted an inspection at the last market day (Sunday 25 January). “We walked away from the inspection feeling satisfied, and believing everything was in place, as we received no verbal or written objections on the day,” the statement read.

After the inspection a meeting was set-

up with the municipality and the market’s team.

“We were surprised by new comments that arose in the meeting, which was not discussed at all by the respective events members on Sunday at the Market.”

This shutdown comes after the market, which was started after the Covid-19 lockdown, was closed by the municipality in 2024 (“Dorp Street Sunday Market gesluit”, Eikestadnuus, 7 November 2024).

The municipality then explained the market did not adhere to the necessary municipal bylaws. At the time it cited the unsuitability of the street as a trading area, lack of parking and consideration for

other road users, among other reasons. Since then, the organisers worked with the municipality to reintroduce the market.

In January, market co-founders Leani Breedt and Danneel Stone announced the market would reopen. “Over the past year, we did research and regularly followed up with council members, members of the public as well as municipal departments,” Breedt told Eikestadnuus last month.

Now, after meeting with mayor Jeremy Fasser it was confirmed and agreed that the Dorp Street Sunday Market would have to move “to a different demarcated market destination”.

Last November, the municipality held a public participation process to get input into possible sites for “alternative demarcated market destination”. Eikestadnuus reached out to the municipality for an update on this process, but had not received feedback at the time of going to print.

The Dorp Street Sunday Market team have the opportunity to reapply for the necessary authorisation to host the market in Dorp Street in hopes of phasing out the market to an alternative venue.

“At the very least, we have tried our best to arrange sufficient time to phase out, before we change to an alternative Sunday Market space,” the statement read.

Thumbs up for Rotary!

The management of Stellenbosch Hospital, together with the provincial Department of Health and Wellness, was honoured to welcome Francesco Arezzo, president of Rotary International and other delegates as guests to the health facility last Friday (30 January). The visit enabled them to see how the ultrasound machines, hand-held probes and blood gas machine gifted to the hospital by the Rotary clubs of Stellenbosch and Hameln (Germany) last year were being used. The department thanked Arezzo and the other delegates for their visit, expressing appreciation too for their work in securing overseas monetary resources for the crucial equipment, in support of patients from Stellenbosch and surrounds.

Rotary International head in town

There is no single solution for the challenges each community faces, but a regional, researched approach is what each Rotary needs to help their communities better.

This was the advice of Rotary International president Francesco Arezzo to local Rotarians on Friday (30 January) when he was welcomed in Stellenbosch by the City of Oaks’ Rotary Club.

Arezzo and his wife, Anna Maria, were hosted at the Devon Valley Hotel last week as part of his visit to Rotary District 9350, the Southern African region.

Alberto Vecchi, the Italian ambassador, also attended the gathering.

“We hope you will experience the passion, creativity and the resilience of our clubs and our communities,” District Governor Pam Rawbone of Rotary District 9350

told the delegation during the welcome.

“We look forward to showcasing some of the impactful projects from youth development and education to health initiatives and sustainable community upliftment.”

Rotary is an international humanitarian-service organisation that aims to help communities through its networks of volunteers. In Stellenbosch the local club has a rich history and has helped establish long-standing institutions such as the local hospice and Molenhof Retirement Home.

“If we really want to change the community we live in, if we want to be relevant and to solve the problems of communities, we have to think big,” Arezzo pointed out in his address.

“A small project is always fantastic, always good, but if we want to be really relevant, if we want to be important for the community we have to unite, work together as clubs for a very big, strong, important, relevant project for the community.”

The president’s theme for this year is “Unite for Good”, so his call for Rotarians to join forces comes as no surprise.

Rotarians from Sea Point to Newlands and Namibia attended the local gathering. Among their questions for Arezzo was the challenge posed by Rotary club members being older people, especially its implications for the future.

In reply, he urged clubs to engage more young people and encourage them to join, particularly for the good of communities.

“We have to grow, grow in diversity, grow with young people. That is so important.”

Arezzo, a Rotarian for more than three decades, said in an ever-changing society it is important for clubs to keep up with change.

“Society is changing so rapidly. What is going on outside these doors now may well be different from what it was when we came in; such is the rapidity of the change. For those of us who are older such rapid

change boggles the mind. Who understands the changing times?

“The new generations – they feel the change. They are able to see and to understand the first signs... much better than us.”

Arezzo emphasised the importance of networks and collaboration to make a bigger, lasting impact on communities.

“We are peace machine, but also a dream machine. I always tell people who are not Rotarians that if they had a dream they cannot realise alone they must join us. We can do so much with our network, the motivations and the tools to realise our dreams.

“The new Rotarians we are looking for are dreamers. We want excellence and that is not necessarily wealth, but the dreamers that are ready to work and which we can help.”

Rock on with theGemini

Fresh off international momentum, altrock-pop duo theGemini has announced their first-ever South African tour.

1The About Last Nite Tour introduces the duo’s ethos: music as a space to let loose, be loud and embrace your inner wild thing. Stellenbosch audiences can expect high-energy performances alongside South African heavyweights, December Streets, aKing and James Deacon.

Formed in London by Romanian vocalist Stef Munteanu (Romanian X-Factor) and South African songwriter Morné Strampe, theGemini quickly evolved from strippedback jam sessions into a fully realised studio project. Their debut material was written over the span of a decade, crafted and developed at AudioHaus in London and completed at Abbey Road Studios, mastered by Geoff Pesche (Dire Straits’ Brothers in Arms), resulting in a sound that balances raw intimacy and lyrical storytelling with cinematic scale. A concept album exploring love, temptation and the

choices that shape what comes next.

Their debut single, “Let There Be Dragons”, is a nu-disco-inflected fever dream, positioning the band as a rising force with crossover appeal. The single hits the South African radio market as the first introduction to audiences here.

“South Africa is home, not just geographically, but creatively,” said Strampe. “These shows are where the story really begins.”

Added Munteanu: “theGemini isn’t about perfection – it’s about honesty in the moment. This tour is about letting go, being loud and choosing connection over comfort.”

The duo will take to the stage of the Daisy Jones Bar outside Stellenbosch on Wednesday 12 February. The doors open at 17:00, with theGemini performing at 19:00, followed by James Deacon (20:00), December Streets (21:00) and aKing (22:15).  Ticket prices start at R200; book your place online through Quicket.

Design for the deep

A young designer from Stellenbosch has been appointed to bring her unique expertise in underwater interior design to an ambitious new development in one of the most remote locations on the planet.

Thandiwe Dlamini, born and raised in Stellenbosch, has been hired by Nemo Heights to design the interiors of the residences at Nemo Heights – an unprecedented luxury residential project planned for Point Nemo, 4 000 m beneath the ocean surface.

Thandiwe Dlamini is taking her interior design to a deeper level, having been appointed to design the interiors of the residences at Nemo Heights, an underwater luxury residential estate.

After graduating with a BA (Hons) in Interior Architecture and Design from Stellenbosch University in 2021, Dlamini moved to Cape Town to further her studies, completing an MA in Interior and Spatial Design at the Michaelis School of Fine Art. During her university years, she developed a distinctive and forward-thinking research focus. Her thesis explored innovative design for luxury yachts and cruise ships, earning her an opportunity to work in Italy with Costa Crociere.

Reflecting on her career so far, the 29-year-old said: “I’m already at work and I think I can create something truly unique. This is a huge recognition for me – I thank my parents for all the sacrifices they made.

Stellenbosch taught me to look beyond the ordinary. Bringing that perspective to Nemo Heights feels like taking a piece of home into the deep sea.”

The Nemo Heights project originates from a dream: it was inspired by George Heights, an engineer in the Apollo programme during the 1960s. Today, Heights' vision has been reinterpreted by his sons Robert and James as a new frontier of human exploration, scheduled to be operational by 2029, with a self-sufficient underwater ecosystem combining ocean technology and advanced sustainability.

Promoted as “The Deepest Luxury,” Nemo Heights will accommodate 400 residents and feature state-of-the-art technologies. The development promises “existential tourism”, including deep-sea expeditions to discover bioluminescent Pacific Ocean life.

Dlamini will be responsible for creating the interior spaces, blending luxurious living with the unique challenges and opportunities of deep-sea habitation, turning her academic research into one of the most innovative architectural projects of the decade. Her appointment highlights how creative talent from Stellenbosch is making an impact on the global stage.

Play inspires clean habits

The Cape Winelands District Municipality (CWDM) hosted an interactive theatre production at Weber Gedenk Primary School in Jamestown on Monday 2 February.

The initiative is part of the annual educational programme presented by Municipal Health Services (MHS) unit. The play is performed by the Klein Libertas Theatre group at various schools across the district. It aims to reinforce positive hygiene practices, cleanliness and environmental responsibility in children, through instructional interaction and storytelling.

Laughter and excitement filled the school hall as the Weber Gedenk learners enjoyed the interactive play, Shake’s Spaza Shop The learners participated enthusiastically and were encouraged to apply what they had learned in their everyday lives, both at home and at school.

They were taught about the importance of hand-washing, how to handle food safely and proper waste management.

Theresa Davids, chief environmental health practitioner of the CWDM, said: “These practices aren’t new; they are

things our children already know. However, it is our responsibility to constantly remind and educate them.”

Last year, district municipality’s MHS, together with their partners, hosted a series of workshops for spaza shop owners. The training conducted was to help small, but vital, businesses in communities follow the required standards, to keep their Certificate of Acceptability (COA) and shed light on issues surrounding food safety of products purchased at spaza shops.

During the workshops a range of topics was discussed, such as practising good hygiene, washing your hands regularly, and environmental responsibility. “Practising good hygiene, washing your hands and being environmentally responsible is not a one-sided issue,” a CWDM statement reads. “It is important for both adults and children to implement these practices.

“[The municipality] is committed to empowering our district with health education and training, with a touch of fun. That is how we build a healthier, safer Cape Winelands district!”

Beers, Lill finish on top

Matt Beers and Candice Lill emerged victorious at the opening round of the 2026 Ford Trailseeker Series in the Banhoek Valley on Saturday 31 January.

The event featured exceptionally strong elite fields, with South Africa's top mountain bikers joined by international talent, ensuring fierce competition throughout the 63,5 km marathon distance.

Beers secured the men’s victory after an intense final 20 km, holding off Marc Pritzen and Luke Moir alongside Michael Foster for race supremacy. In the women’s contest Lill claimed

the crown after a puncture for Swiss champion Alessandra Keller effectively ended her victory chances. Tyler Jacobs recovered from an early crash to finish second, while Keller demonstrated remarkable resilience, climbing back through the field to secure third place.

The 06:30 start ensured elite racers avoided the day’s heat, with the women’s podium decided before 09:30. However, recreational riders faced challenging conditions as the African sun intensified throughout

the morning.

The women’s race began conservatively through the first 10 km until the climbing commenced. Lill and Keller then collaborated to split the field, with only Jacobs, Vera Looser and Hayley Preen matching their climbing pace. At the 26 km mark Lill’s relentless pressure further splintered the leading group.

“I could feel today that I’m in a really good place,” she reflected, “and this is a great way to go into the season. Unfortunate-

ly, Keller had a puncture; it would have been really nice to race with her for longer.”

Her mechanical dropped her outside the top five, but the cross-country short course world champion used the final 15 km climbs to surge back into contention, ultimately finishing just 12 seconds behind Jacobs.

In the men’s race Foster proved the early aggressor, splitting the field before the climbing began. Sandy corners and hidden rocks made positioning crucial through the treach-

erous opening 20 km. The race remained fluid until the final climb, where Beers executed a perfectly-timed attack.

“Going down the last singletrack, Marc was leading, and I was on his wheel,” Beers recalled.

Beers crossed the line victorious, with Pritzen second and Moir third, 25 seconds behind.

Pniël reg vir

7’s-toernooi
