Slabbert stepsdown
Stellenbosch will get anew deputyexecutive mayor after Councillor Mynard Slabbert stepped down from the role.
His resignation came at the instruction of theDemocratic Alliance’s Federal Executivelast week.
On Tuesday (2 June),Jan de Villiers, the DA’s national spokesperson, saidSlabbert’s caucus had lost confidenceinhim.
“The Federal Executive considered the political confidenceof his caucus as the only reason for his resignation, but other various allegations have allbeen referred to the Federal Legal Commission for furtherinvestigation,” De Villiers said. “The partywill initiate aprocess to appoint anew deputy mayor as per ourrules and procedures.”
It was last Wednesday (27May), about six monthsbefore the2026 municipal elections, that the DA broughtavoteofnoconfidence against the Ward 21 (Jamestown andParadyskloof) councillor.

A“loss of confidence” seems to be whathas led to the party’s
nation of former councillor Rikus Badenhorst, who took up aposition in Parliament in the National Council of Provinces.

At this stage it is unclear what exactly led to the caucus’ decision.
Eikestadnuus understands that Slabbert actively campaigned to stand as mayoral candidate for the upcoming municipal elections but was trumped by Fasser. However,Slabbert has since told media he had no ambitions of becoming mayor and washappy to play asupporting roleand is satified to remain on as amember of the Stellenbosch municipal council.
He told News24 the vote of no confidence came after yearsof raising concerns about the potentially unlawful property contracts transactions.

TheWestern Cape's overall damlevels have surged to 7,.47%, markingadramatic recovery from the critically low44,94% recordedearly last month,according to the latest data compiled on Monday1 June.
The impressive 26,53% increase comes afterdevastating floods swept through the provincebetween10and 14 May, killing at least 10 people andleaving more than7 400 people in emergency shelters Farmers described the floods as the worst in acentury.
The CapeTown Water SupplySystem, whichprovides water to the metro andsurroundingareas,has shown an equallyimpressiverecovery, surgingfromjust47,78% in earlyMay to 71,95%.
TheewaterskloofDam,the largestinthe provinceand accounting for 54% of the Cape Town watersupply system, hasrebounded from aworrying 43,2% in late April to 73,29%. Thedam recorded 60,51% at the same time last year

Town system have recorded even more spectacular gains. Wemmershoek Damhas nearly doubledfrom49,47% before the floods to 96,71%, compared to just 53,65% last year. Berg RiverDam surged from a low of 42,3% in late April to 75,86%, well above lastyear's 67,38%.
However, notall dams showedyear-on-year improvement. SteenbrasUpper Damdeclinedfromlastyear's 89,19% to the current81,22%, though it hasrecovered significantly from 58,4% in late April.Voëlvlei Damisat 59,63%, havingclimbedfrom 50,28% beforethe floods,but still only marginally higher thanlastyear's58,42%.
TheOlifants/DoornRiver Catchment hasrecorded the most dramatictransformation, surgingfromacriticallylow 23,43% beforethe floods to 80,74% currently. This represents an extraordinary57,31 percentagepoint increasein less thana month, andisvastly improved from lastyear's 30.10%. Eighteen damsare at or above full capacity.
