Rowers teiken Klapmuts

Hy is deur ’n onbekende man

Hul pogings was egter sonder sukses.

Staan saam, hoor sakeforum

Biblioteek is oop!

“My pa het altyd gesê ek is ’n boekwurm.

Black winemakers speak

Frank discussion about the face, future and funding of the wine industry was had during a dialogue hosted by the Wine and Agricultural Ethical Trading Association (Wieta), in partnership with the provincial Department of Agriculture at the Stellenbosch Insitute for Advanced Study on Friday 26 September.

Many stakeholders from the wine industry, including emerging producers, deliberated on the challenges and successes of the sector, including how to diversify it.

At the centre of this engagement, according to Wieta CEO Linda Lipparoni, is a project that began as the Emerging Smallholder and Black Producer Ethical Support Programme. This has grown since its inception in 2019, and with a total direct investment of R3,5 million, change is happening.

“Seven years later we stand together, not only to acknowledge achievement, but affirm the power of transformation, the resilience of our black-owned brands and black producers, the shared responsibility we all carry to build an industry that is truly inclusive, ethical and sustainable,” Lipparoni said. “We know the South African wine story to be a tapestry of rich soils and diverse cultures, of history, be it bitter and sweet.”

Wieta helps producers promote fair labour practices, ethical trade and social justice. For local black wine producers such as Antoinette Rapitsi of Redamancy Vineyards in Devon Valley, this means walking the talk.

“We are seeing more women and black producers, so all races and people from different backgrounds have an opportunity to be part of the South African industry and in the African wine market. The identity

of South African wines internationally hasn’t completely made that shift because when one presents one’s wines, the biggest success stories of the South African wine history are still the established brands. But this is changing. We are modernising and looking at being more transparent in terms of equity and labour.”

Along with Rapitsi, many of the panellists agreed there is still a long way to go.

Winemakers Vivian Kleynhans of Seven Sisters Wineyard and Denise Stubbs of Thokozani Wines also acknowledged that breaking into the local wine market still remains a challenge.

Stubbs spoke of her own challenges with local retailers and customers, who were still hesitant to try black-owned brands, believing the wine to be of lesser quality.

Denzel Swartz, sales and brand executive at Zoetendal Vineyard Estate, said in many instances retailers, hotel chains and eateries don’t expect black-owned wines to be fine wines. He said despite producing wines in the R200 class, customers often expect a R50 wine.

“Tokenism creates visibility, and blackowned brands can be placed on shelves, but that does not create viability. We need long-term procurement commitments from suppliers. We don’t just need onceoff sales,” Swartz pointed out. “That’s not what we want. I always say I do not accept handouts. I accept hand-ups. If there is no responsibility and two-way commitment, I don’t want to partner with the brands.”

Lipparoni said transformation must become systemic to be sustainable. “May it strengthen our resolve to create a wine industry where opportunity is not limited by history, where quality and ethics work hand-in-hand, and where the success of black-owned brands is not an exception, but is expected and indeed is the rule.”

Night of elegance, power

The annual Mr and Miss Stellenbosch 2025 pageant transformed Van der Stel Hall into a glamorous Hollywood Oscars-themed spectacle on Saturday (27 September).

The sold-out event brought the community together in black-tie splendour for an evening celebrating elegance, excellence and empowerment.

This community-driven platform transcends traditional pageantry, serving as an initiative that empowers ambassadors of change while promoting education, respect, and tolerance. Finalists participated in community service projects as part of their scoring, with pre-event workshops building confidence and preparing them for meaningful roles as community representatives.

The evening showcased professional production values, with JKM Sound providing exceptional staging, lighting, and audio. Guests enjoyed finger food platters and beverages while local talents PJ Plaatjies and Winay aka Mandela delivered captivating performances that kept the audience engaged throughout the night.

The crowning ceremony highlighted the event’s inclusivity, with the winners representing various communities across Stellenbosch:

• Miss Tiny: Alexa Opperman (Central Stellenbosch);

• Miss Toddler: Skyler Goeieman (Devon Valley);

• Miss Pre-Teen: Gia-Lee Paulse (Jamestown);

• Mr Teen: Keagan Goeieman (Devon Valley);

• Miss Teen: Sade Baron (Cloetesville);

• Mr Stellenbosch: Luyanda Claassen (Khayamandi);

• Miss Stellenbosch: Jemeka Fortuin;

• Mrs Stellenbosch: Charmain Ewerts (Franschhoek); and

• Miss LGBT: Tamara Brooks (Cloetesville).

The show opened on a poignant note, with a candlelit vigil honouring Jeanette Christiaans, a 2025 Mrs Stellenbosch finalist who died in September, reflecting the fundamental values on which the pageant is built, including compassion.

The judging panel included Women’s

Springbok rugby player Alicia Willemse, fashion designer Ridovane Martin, model and philanthropist Kay-Dee Adams, and community builder Stephanie Benjamin. Kyle Adam, former Mr Stellenbosch and owner of Vine and Vow Events, served as auditor.

Social media buzzed with praise for the organisation, production quality and performances. Cloetesville High School teacher Miss Crombie commended pageant director Queen Enigma von Hamburg, while parent Desmaree Claassen expressed gratitude for the journey. Organisers plan a grander event for next year.

Von Hamburg continues her mission of community upliftment, with supporters encouraged to contact her on 078 515 9645.

Young voices unite in song at choral fests

The annual e’Bosch School Choir Festivals once again brought harmony, hope, and youthful talent to the Ida’s Valley Primary School hall, with two inspiring evenings of music that united learners from schools across Stellenbosch.

The High School Choir Festival, held on Thursday 21 August, featured standout per-

formances by Cloetesville High, Klapmuts Secondary, Lückhoff High, Stellenzicht High, and Paul Roos Gymnasium. The evening concluded with a powerful joint performance of “United Light”, a choral anthem composed for the event by local musician Xander Kritzinger. The song captured the festival’s spirit of unity and

shared purpose among the town’s youth.

On Thursday 18 September, the Primary School Choir Festival showcased vibrant performances from Cloetesville, Ida’s Valley, Klapmuts, Simondium, Joostenberg, Dalubuhle, and twelve other schools. Each choir cluster brought a unique musical selection, celebrating cultural diversity and community pride.

“These festivals are about more than music,” said John Frans, project manager of the e’Bosch School Choir Festivals. “They’re about building bridges between schools, celebrating our shared heritage, and giving our youth a platform to shine.”

Parents, teachers and community from across Stellenbosch attended both events, which form part of the broader e’Bosch Heritage Project.

Founded in 2011, the organisation aims to address social exclusion and foster cohesion by celebrating local heritage and creating inclusive spaces.

Through these choir festivals e’Bosch continues its mission to unite communities, uplift young voices, and promote a vision of shared identity and belonging.

Litter problem is big

I recently took a walk across The Braak, a grassy park in the centre of Stellenbosch that was once used as a military-parade ground in the 1700s.

Now it is used mainly as a thoroughfare for people heading to their vehicles, a break area for employees taking lunch and, sadly, a dumping ground for plastic waste. Straws, bottle lids, lollipop sticks and cigarette butts litter the lawn as far as the eye can see. Some items have been embedded so deeply in the soil I couldn’t remove them by hand.

Two women sat on a bench outside the St Mary’s Anglican church wearing their municipal parking-guard vests, trash strewn about their feet. One of the women casually kicked a plastic cold-drink bottle lying beside her, which I then retrieved and threw into the bin (which was just 3 m away).

Further on, three workers tended to the municipal gardens.

“At least the pansies match the bottle caps,” I thought, trying to keep it together while watching countless individuals cross The Braak, not a single one stopping to pick up an item of trash.

Perhaps because it’s not their job?

“It’s not my job” is precisely the mentality which has landed South Africa with the myriad of socio-economic issues it faces today. It speaks to a lack of personal and collective accountability for maintaining the quality of

our surroundings.

As for those who leave the litter: I have often asked people to pick up trash they’ve thrown down. Some laugh at me and continue walking. Some acknowledge their wrongdoing in embarrassment and comply; others respond with obscenities.

I cannot quite fathom the reason for the absolute lack of care people have for the quality of their surroundings. Maybe someone could enlighten me.

But more importantly, where is the advocacy? Where is the community engagement? Where is the accountability from Stellenbosch’s powerful institutions?

Plastic waste is not limited to The Braak. You can find litter in the Coetzenberg mountain and the Ida’s Valley nature area, in the Krom and Eerste rivers, along the streets and in gardens. I clear trash from the garden outside our property daily.

But sheer amount of waste in a location so central and visible in the Stellenbosch community is indicative of widespread disregard.

Stellenbosch Municipality recently posted about a recycling bin pilot project they initiated with the luxury Newinbosch development, citing their second place in the provincial Municipal Waste Management Recognition Award in 2024 as a testament to achieving their vision of a sustainable, green valley.

If this is the standard for the

Ek was nie bewus daarvan nie.

province, I am deeply concerned.

As long as dumping and littering persists, we cannot claim to be a beacon for sustainability. While the municipality is mandated to enforce waste management bylaws, all stakeholders – educational institutions, businesses, local NGOs, and community members – must share responsibility.

To Stellenbosch Municipality: form public-private partnerships and develop institutional capacity to engage communities and educate civilians on the necessity of reducing waste.

To the local businesses: reduce your sale of single-use plastic packaged items and encourage responsible disposing of waste by your customers.

To civil organisations: advocate for stronger waste-management enforcement by the local authorities in the interests of promoting tourism and sustainable development.

To residents of Stellenbosch: do not underestimate your ability to influence behaviour through your words and actions. We must all take responsibility for achieving our vision of a sustainable, green, waste-free valley where we can be proud to call ourselves citizens of this beautiful town. I am happy to volunteer my time and services to support. But I cannot do it all, and I cannot do it alone.

R69.90

oplossing is nie.

Wat sê ander oor US se Hamlets?

Stellenbosch University’s (SU) Student Recruitment Division hosted nearly 80 principals from priority high schools across the province along with representatives of the Western Cape Education Department (WCED).

The breakfast was held on campus at the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study on Monday 22 September. It provided an opportunity for principals from SU’s top partner schools in the Cape Town metro and Cape Winelands districts to engage with Prof Deresh Ramjugernath, SU rector and vice-chancellor, on his vision for SU, and to further strengthen their collaboration with the institution. Members of the rectorate and faculty deans were also present.

“Partnerships with schools are not just a nice-to-have, they are essential. They are part of our collective responsibility to the next generation. The work you do and the work we do as a university is about ensuring we leave the next generation more well-resourced and well-equipped than we are now,” Ramjugernath said in his address.

“Our story begins in your classrooms, your corridors and your care. The foundations you lay we continue to build on as an institution. Without your dedication the excellence we strive for at SU is not possible.”

He shared the university’s long-term vision, SU Vision 2040, and its aspiration to become Africa’s first global top 100 university. Calling on schools to support SU’s com-

mitment to working in service of society, Ramjugernath said: “Education is not only a pathway to employment, but also a catalyst for positive social change.”

Highlighting SU’s focus on student success and employability, he pointed to the impact of initiatives such as the Dell Young Leaders Programme, which supports students from disadvantaged backgrounds and is often NSFAS-funded.

Ramjugernath also acknowledged ongoing challenges in higher education, such as student debt and the financial sustainability of the sector, and said transformation in education is a continuous process.

The principals used the platform to raise pressing questions and share perspectives on issues such as preparing learners for the demands of higher education, encouraging uptake of STEM subjects, navigating the ethical use of artificial intelligence, and ensuring education fosters academic achievement, critical thinking, values and ethical leadership. They also drew SU leaders on having plans in place at the start of the academic year to manage potential disruptions of the institution when they occurred.

The gathering closed with a call for continued collaboration.

“The work you’re doing is essential for us to realise the vision of SU,” Ramjugernath concluded. “Together, let’s keep building a future South Africa, a future Africa and a world in which we can all be proud of our contributions.”

MTB

and trail

are invited

Following the tragic loss of mountain-biking pioneer and Dirtopia founder Meurant Botha and his close friend JP van Zyl, the Muratie Trails Marathon, scheduled for Sunday 5 October, has been cancelled.

In its place the Dirtopia Trail Centre will host a Trail Celebration Weekend at Muratie Wine Estate from 07:30 to 13:30 on Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 October. The well-known cycling duo died in an accident near Calvinia on Saturday 13 September (“Tributes pour in for S'bosch MTB pioneer”, Eikestadnuus, 18 September).

Cyclists, runners and hikers are invited to enjoy the trails and celebrate

the lives of two passionate trail builders who helped shape mountain biking and outdoor culture in South Africa.

The estate’s trails will be open on both days at a cost of R100 for an MTB permit and R75 for a hiking or running permit. A guided MTB ride will be held at 08:30 on Sunday.

Donations are welcome in support of

Cape of good fortune

Jacques Kruyswijk (right) won his first Sunshine Tour title in the Cape and he got engaged in the Cape, so it seemed hardly surprising that a windy final round and a two-hole play-o should go his way as he won the Vodacom Origins of Golf at Devonvale Golf & Wine Estate on Sunday (28 September). In the tough conditions of a strong wind sweeping through the winelands, Kruyswijk beat George Coetzee with a par on the second hole of their play-o to claim the fourth Sunshine Tour title of his career. Krieket-aksie in Stellenbosch

Avril Fillies

“Skenkings soos bekers, kontant of koopbewyse, of selfs ongebruikte kriekettoerusting is ook welkom.

 Vir nog inligting of om betrokke te raak, kontak Williams by 083 715 7546 of stuur ’n e-pos na president@blindcricketsa.co.za, of kontak vir Ernest Nyatela by 061 997 5864 of coordinator@blindcricketsa.co.za

Kom hardloop saam by 15de straatmyl in Eikestad

 Rig navrae aan Francois Fouché by 083 368 5948 of info@straatmyl.co.za.
