Shopkeepers cry foul after raids

Spaza shopkeepers in Khayamandi say they were left traumatised by the action of LawEnforcementofficers afterraids on theirshopslastmonth.

Accordingtoaspokesperson for several shopkeepers the incidenttook place late on Friday 12 June, whenmunicipal LawEnforcement officers apparently barged into their stores to inspecttheir paperwork.

The shopkeepers’ spokesperson, who spoketo Eikestadnuus on conditionofanonymity out of fear, claimed the officers were heavy-handed andrude.

“Historically,the relationship [between shopkeepersand the municipality]has been good and collaborative,”hepointed out. “However, the behaviour of the officers during this specific operation was strange, aggressive and entirely uncharacteristic of how municipal officials usually conduct themselves.”

He noted “due to the current tensions across the country” shopkeepers do not feel safe. Tensions betweencivic groups suchasMarch andMarch and foreign residents, whether illegally in the country or not, have meant the group of Khayamandi shopkeeperswereunwilling to make too many waves after therecent incident withmunicipal officers

“It is difficult to file acomplaint with the very same systemthat just broke the lawinfront of you,” the group’sspokesperson pointedout.

Residents of Khayamandi, alongwith March andMarchand the organisation Operation Dudula,took to the streets in protest last month, marching against socio-economic issues, which they say are tiedtothe presence of undocumented immigrants in South Africa.

On Monday(29 June), Stellenbosch police andthe Stellenbosch Municipality confirmed there were no official protests takingplace the following day.The civil society groupMarchand March, along withother organisations, have called for nationaldemonstrations focused on illegalimmigrationand border control.The protestors called forall undocumented migrants to leave the country.

On Tuesday morning, Stellenbosch Municipality confirmed that despiteno planned protest, lawenforcement officials remained on high alert.

“A JointOperations Centre(JOC) was activated overthe weekend, bringing together police, LawEnforcement, Traffic Services and Fire andDisaster Risk Management to coordinatepreparedness andensure public safety. Global golden recognition for Visio VitnersinLondon

AStellenbosch black-empowermentwine project secured agold medalatone ofthe world’s mostprestigious wine competitions,placing South African transformationinitiatives alongside leading international producers.

Visio Vintners receivedthe award at the 2026Decanter World Wine Awards in London for itsAlliance 2022,ared blend comprising 67% cabernet sauvignon, 25% cabernet Franc and 8% shiraz.

The winery is apartnership between Kleine ZalzeWines and the Kleine Zalze Empowerment Trust, which is owned and managed by employees workingacrossthe business.

The DecanterWorld Wine Awards, established in 2004, attractedclose to 17 000 entries from58countries this year.

Gold medals are awardedonly to wines scoring between 95 and 96 points following blind tastingbyaninternational panel of Masters of Wine,master sommeliers and wine experts.

Sandra Koen, trustee of Visio Vintners, saidthe recognition validates theproject’s commitment to quality andexcellence.

“The award for ourAlliance 2022 demonstrates thattransformation andexcellence arenot mutually exclusive goals,” shesaid.

“It provides evidence that South Africa’s empowerment initiatives canproduce wines capable of competing at thehighest international level.”

Gerald Snyman, also atrustee, said Visio Vintners benefits from access to prime Stellenbosch terroir adjacent to theKleine Zalze Wines property.

“Cabernet sauvignonforms the backbone of the wine, bringing structure, depth and classic blackcurrant fruit. Cabernet Franc contributes aromatic complexity andelegance, while shiraz adds spiceand richness.”

The grapes are sourced exclusively from Visio Vintners’ own vineyards in Stellenbosch, aregionknown for producing high-quality red wines.

The areabenefits from decomposed granite soils, varied elevations andthe cooling influence of FalseBay.

The empowerment trust was launched to create opportunities for employee participation, skills development and long-term economic inclusioninthe wine industry.

Koen said the recognition sends a message about the future of South African wine and the role of transformation in the industry. “We hope this award inspires other empowerment projects andreinforces SouthAfrica’sreputationasa producer of outstanding wines across all sectors of the industry,”she said.

The Alliance 2022 sits at the topofVisio Vintners’ portfolio of red, white androsé wines.

Lorraine du Toit,’nonderwyserbydie Dorothea Spesiale Skool in Cloetesville, het verlede Woensdag (24 Junie) tydens die driejarige kongres van die SAOU die nasionale toekenning vir uitnemendheidinklaskamerpraktyk vir LSOBskole ontvang.

Dié Stellenbosser is sedert 2022 deel van die plaaslike skool, waar sy haar passie en roeping uitleef deur met leerders met spesiale behoeftes te werk.

“Ek streef daarna om ’n positiewe verskil in die daaglikse lewe van kinders te maak.Ekluister nie net na wat kinders sê nie, maar ook na dit wat hulle nie kansê nie. Ek bou sterk verhoudings met ouers en versorgers en waardeer diebydraes van kollegas en terapeute,”vertel Du Toit.

“Asopvoeder glo ek dat elkeleerder kan leer en kangroei –net nie altydopdieselfde manier of teen dieselfde temponie. Leerders metspesiale behoeftes vranie vir mindernie…hulle vra net vir anders.”

Du Toit, wat met25jaar ervaring in die onderwys spog, het vroeg reeds besluit om die onderwys as loopbaan te betree. Sy het ná skool grondslagfase-onderwys aan die destydse Onderwyskollege Boland in Wellington (nou deel van die Kaapse Skiereiland Universiteit van Tegnologie) studeer, en later aan die Universiteit Stellenbosch in die onderrig van leerdersmet spesiale behoeftes gespesialiseer.

Sy het deur die loop van haar loopbaan ervaring in hoofstroomonderwys en leerondersteuning opgedoen en was ook ’n opvoeder in ’n eenheidsklas voordat sy vier jaar gelede by die Dorothea-span aangesluit het.

“As gelowige sien ek my werk met leerders met spesiale behoeftesasmyroeping. Dit verander my werk in ’n bediening en gee my daaglikse taak ’n dieper betekenis.”

Dié getroude ma van twee voeg by dat die pad nie sonder uitdagings is nie. “Daar is dae wat moeilik is –emosioneel en uitputtend –maar elkeuitdaging het my geleer om meer geduldig, kreatief en veerkragtig te wees,”sêDuToit

Die Pleinstraat-biblioteek in Stellenbosch-sentraal is nou weeroop vir die publieknadat die oudste biblioteek in die streek opgeknap is.

Die opknappingvan diehistorieseerfenisgebou wat die biblioteek huisveshet vir vele uitdagingsgesorg, maar nou het die biblioteek ’n hysbak, nuweablusiegerieweenspesifieke afdelings vir alle lesers. Dit is amptelikverlede Woensdag (24 Junie) heropen.

Die Stellenbosseburgemeester Jeremy Fasser beskryf die opknapping as ’n mylpaalprojek vir die munisipaliteit “In 2022 hetdie biblioteek-departement hierdie ambisieuse projekaangepak met ’n duidelike visieomons mees historiese biblioteekin’nmoderne,toeganklike en dinamiese spilpuntteomskepwat nie net voorsien in die ontwikkelende behoeftes van ons gemeenskapnie,maar ook gereed is virdie 21steeeu,” vertel Fasser Nuwerekenaars is nou beskikbaar vir almal, vanentrepreneurstot werksoekers.

Die leesstof is ook bygewerk met die boeke wat van 48 000 tot 24 000 verminder is, maar volgensPatricia Sijaji, waarnemende hoof van Stellenboschse biblioteke, is meer moderne en toepaslike boeke aangeskaf. Tieners hetnou ook hul eieafdeling, langs die grootmense op die grondvloer.

Volgens Sijajisevoorganger, Sarala Majudith,wat die balvir die opknapping aan dierol gesithet, was die opknapping daarop gemik om meer voete terug in die biblioteek ná die grendeltyd te kry. “Die biblioteek het destydsverskeie leemtes gehad,maarmet die opknappingsisdaar ’n fokusopvroeëkinderontwikkeling (VKO) endie gebouismeerinklusief vir diegenemet gestremdhede, ouersmet stootwaentjies en regtig enigeen watvan diehysbak gebruikwil maak,” verduideliksy.

Metdie uitbreiding van kunsmatige intelligensie en die internet was dit ook belangrik om hierdie aspekte in die biblioteekseaanbiedingeteinkorporeer.

Nou hetdie kleinspanhul eie afdelingop dieeerste verdieping metvele VKO-materiaal, speelgoedenselfs’n poppekas.Opvoeders vanLynedoch Community School sê hul leerders sien reeds daarnauit om weer dié biblioteek te besoek. “Ons leerders het elke twee weke diebiblioteek besoek om hul boekies uit te neem en daar wasvele aktiwiteite wat diepersoneel vir hulle aangebied het. Daar was lees-sessies en die spelkompetisies,” sê die onderwysassistent Janine Jaftha.

Inwoners wat ’n nuwebiblioteekkaartjie wilhê, moet hul identiteitsdokument en bewysvan adressaambring . Die biblioteekisMaandae,Woensdae en Vrydae oop tussen 09:00 en 17:00; en 09:00 tot 17:30opDinsdae en Donderdae,enSaterdae tussen 08:30 en 12:00.
