Visit Stellenbosch partnerships ‘a success story’

Tourismevaluatesyear

Despite the many challenges the sector has faced, it has been a good year for tourism in Stellenbosch

So said Michael Ratcliffe, chairperson of Visit Stellenbosch during the tourism organisation’s annual general meeting at Protea Hotel in Stellenbosch on Friday 14 November Ratcliffe said the past year has been one filled with change for the sector “There has been a lot of disruption and change There has been plenty of transition, yet I would still categorise it as a good year,” he said “Without the support of the Visit Stellenbosch board and the entire tourism community, we wouldn’t have been

able to say that ”

Among the changes and challenges were the Stellenbosch Municipality’s proposed draft Stellenbosch municipal zoning scheme bylaw, which seeks to “regulate and control municipal zoning ”

“In Stellenbosch agriculture, wine, wine tourism and tourism are all the same thing,” Ratcliffe said “We drink from the same bottle so to speak ”

Another change was the appointment of Annemarie Liebenberg as CEO of Visit Stellenbosch in March The organisation also worked with a new mayor Jeremy Fasser, who replaced Gesie van Deventer late last year Ratcliffe thanked Fasser for listening to the sectors’ input on the proposed bylaw on which he was

committed to providing “intelligence feedback”

Visit Stellenbosch is a eightyear-old public-private partnership which, according to Ratcliffe, has been battle tested and is a success story of which to be proud – a sentiment that Western Cape Premier Alan Winde shares

In his keynote address Winde said: “Everything [Stellenbosch] seems to be doing in this ecosystem is really shooting the lights out, so let’s keep doing it Well done! Thank you for playing your part in creating jobs, opportunities, and building a resilient region ”

Winde’s pat on the back didn’t come without a caution He said while the sector works to attract tourists, it didn’t mean wine estates, accommodation and

experience providers are geared for the market they aim to attract “The challenge for government and the private sector, is to keep up At the moment, international arrivals into Cape Town is growing at 16%. That is huge, but are we passing enough plans? Are we attracting sufficient investors? Have we not only enough beds, but also experiences for visitors to do?”

According to Visit Stellenbosch there is plenty to do in the greater Stellenbosch The region has more than 800 km of trails to explore, more than 50 art galleries to visit, more than 150 wine farms and more than 200 restaurants Winde cautioned local stakeholders on operating times, rates that price-out domestic tourists and not becoming complacent

as part of the “gastronomy and wine” capital Fasser emphasised the importance of local tourism for the town He highlighted the recent annual Stellenbosch Garden Town, Wine Town and the Stellenbosch Street Soireés as collaborative events by Visit Stellenbosch and the municipality “Tourism is a lifeline that has sustained thousands of families, businesses and livelihoods across our area – from restaurants and wine farms to guest houses, tour operators and creators When tourism succeeds our local economy succeeds,” the mayor said According to research by Futureneer Advisors, 48 311 direct and indirect jobs were sustained by tourism in Stellenbosch in 2024

FWV beefs up security

JanaScheepers

In response to recent a spate of burglaries on guest farms and growing safety concerns, the Franschhoek Wine Valley (FWV), decided enough is enough and assisted in sharpening the town’s security by launching an initiative to strengthen security and improve coordination among local safety partners

The tourism organisation has convened strategic sessions with key stakeholders, including private security providers, the fire and safety department, first responders, and senior representatives from the police to assess potential risks and develop a valley-wide safety strategy, said Ruth McCourt, FWV CEO

The outcome of the discussions have resulted in the establishment of a revised Franschhoek security cluster committee

The committee serves as a platform for cooperation between farms, hospitality providers, and local safety organisations Weekly meetings are being held to share updates, identify emerging threats, and coordinate all safety and security efforts.

The hospitality sector is working alongside FWV to introduce a basic grading framework that will help accommodation providers assess and strengthen their security readiness Property owners and businesses are also being encouraged to review and upgrade their infrastructure, with FWV offering guidelines and connections to vetted service providers, McCourt added

In addition to improving onthe-ground security, FWV is also developing a consistent public awareness campaign to keep residents and visitors informed McCourt said that, although recent incidents have understandably heightened concern, Franschhoek’s overall crime rate remains significantly lower than that of surrounding towns She pointed out that local policing capacity remains a major challenge to combat crime and the Franschhoek Police Station currently operates with only one response vehicle to cover the entire valley, “placing pressure on officers to respond swiftly to multiple incidents”

“This security initiative represents a united and proactive effort by residents, businesses, and law enforcement to maintain Franschhoek’s reputation as a safe and welcoming destination FWV has committed to providing regular updates as these measures continue to take shape ”

Eikestadnuus previously reported on various burglaries including one at a cottage on the Dieu Donné wine and guest farm in Uitkyk Street. According to information, the guest noticed the suspects outside and locked themselves in the bathroom, after which the suspects allegedly stole a purse and fled the scene

Three suspects are also being sought by police in connection with burglaries at Courcheval, Chamonix wine and guest farm, Terra de Luc guest farm, and Val d’Or estate, which al took place this year

Rifles, ammo seized

Stellenbosch police recently arrested a suspect who allegedly fired a firearm in Techno Park.

According to police reports a local security guard stopped a police officer to inform him that his colleague was in a fight with someone in possession of a firearm in Techno Park around 22:05 on Wednesday 5 November

When the police arrived in Quantum Street, they found a security guard with the suspect They searched him and confiscated a firearm in his possession

The police officers contacted the Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC) and, while waiting, they came across a white Land Rover Defender in an open field in Quantum Street, which had the keys inside as well as a black rifle on the front passenger seat

The vehicle, along with the firearm, was taken to the local police station There the suspect confirmed the Land Rover

Defender and rifle belonged to him

In total police found a R5 rifle with 120 rounds, one R4 rifle and 14 9 mm rounds

Low child-vaccine uptake leads to preventable diseases

The Western Cape is seeing an increase in measles outbreaks in urban areas such as Khayelitsha, Mfuleni, Eerste River, Mitchells Plain, Kraaifontein and Wesbank.

The Western Cape Department of Health said the increase in measles cases was not unique to the province as South Africa was facing a decline in childhood-vaccination uptake, which posed a serious risk to public health and threatened the country’s efforts to eliminate vaccine-preventable diseases.

This decline has contributed to multiple outbreaks of measles, rubella and diphtheria across the province, signalling serious gaps in population immunity, the department said. Measles is highly contagious and infects the respiratory tract. Symptoms include high fever, a rash, runny nose, conjunctivitis and coughing. Health-care practitioners

can diagnose measles on signs, symptoms and a blood sample collected for laboratory testing.

“We ask that parents look out for measles symptoms and keep their children home when they have one or more of these symptoms so we can curb the spread of this highly contagious disease,” a spokesperson for the department urged

“Should your child run a fever, feel sleepy or struggle to eat, take them to the nearest clinic immediately. Potential complications of measles include pneumonia, diarrhoea, brain infection and blindness Complications are more serious in those who catch measles as young infants under two years of age, and in children who are malnourished.”

Free childhood vaccines are available at all public-health facilities and catch-up doses can be given if a child has missed a vaccination.

Seniors are mobile again

The Cape Winelands District Municipality (CWDM) officially handed 37 wheelchairs to 19 old-age homes and service centres at Paarl Town Hall on Monday 3 November, responding to growing public health needs The donation was made possible through the Rural and Social Development Programme, which allocated funding during budgeting to help vulnerable residents waiting for wheelchairs due to budgetary constraints CWDM identified the need through the District Health Forum, where multiple partners address mutual concerns “One wheelchair makes a difference,” said Councillor Minnie Petersen, addressing elderly representatives. “We from the Cape Winelands are here to make a difference in our community’s lives ” Executive Mayor Dr Elna von Schlicht praised the initiative: “Wheelchairs offer independence and dignity to patients while supporting caregivers This project proves why collaboration between government and multi-disciplinary platforms is so important.”

Newinbosch ‘vol tekortkominge’

20 years of service and sacrifice

As the festive season approaches, often referred to as the “silly season”, first responders face increased pressure and numerous challenges

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Uniform Service, when those in uniform come together for a special service, seeking strength from the Divine in honouring their calling

The event will be held at the Volkskerk van Afrika in Ida’s Valley at 10:00 this Sunday (23 November)

To support emergency personnel emotionally and spiritually in this demanding period, Uniform Services are held across various regions, bringing front-line staff together for collective prayer, encouragement and preparation

This meaningful initiative was founded by Pastor Jenny Willemse in 2005 She envisioned creating a space for those in uniform to gather in unity, seek strength and honour their calling

The service will pay tribute to the men and women who lost their lives in the line of duty, while also offering thanks to God for His continued protection over all who serve

The community is warmly invited to join this milestone event For more information, phone Pastor Jenny Willemse on 073 367 3981

Fosteringloveforreading

Local author Monique Classen launched a collection of four new Christian books and is celebrating by giving back to libraries and educating the next generation of readers.

The launch of the diverse collection, which includes a children’s book and a biblical study, is coupled with a generous donation drive and a competition for local educares.

Classen penned the four distinct books, designed to share messages of faith and hope with readers of all ages and back-

grounds. The books are Dancing with the Divine: A Journey of Movement and Spirit, Obadiah: Humility and Obedience, Prayers for Little Ones and The First Family: Adam, Eve and God Beyond the launch Classen is showing commitment to her community with a book donation and competition.

A copy of one of the books will be donated to Eerste River, Stellenbosch and Somerset West libraries, while local educares can enter a competition for their children to win copies of either Prayers for Little Ones or The First Fami-

ly: Adam, Eve and God.

The latter initiative aims to foster a love for reading from a young age.

“I believe in the power of storytelling to connect people with their faith and it’s a privilege to share these messages with my community,” said Classen

“By working with our local libraries and educares we can put these books directly into the hands of those who will benefit most.”
