‘Extortion ring’ exposed

fter more than two years of investigation detectives of the Western Cape police’s Serious Violent Crime Unit have nabbed four suspects in connection with an extortion ring operating in Stellenbosch and Kayamandi on Sunday (16 August).
A spokesperson for the Kayamandi Movement for Change said the community welcomes the arrests. “This news comes as a great relief to the community,” a statement from the organisation reads. “The reality is that residents and local businesses do not feel safe. Extortion creates fear, undermines local businesses and has a serious impact on the wellbeing of the entire community. “We may not fully understand the scale of the negative impact that extortion is having on the community because much of it happens in secret. Those who are being extorted are often afraid to speak out because they fear for their safety and do not know who they can trust.” Extortion has long been a problem in the

Stellenbosch township, as Stellenbosch police’s station commander Brigadier Sandile Sonjani highlights. He explains arrests like Sunday’s comes after months of surveillance by the crime intelligence unit which is also expensive to do. Sonjani says residents often think police aren’t doing anything to tackle such complex crimes and often their disinclination to report the crime means victims would rather “pay the extortionists in the dark”. “Spaza shops are becoming easy targets particularly in the case of Somali nationals who are sophisticated to deal with,” he explains. COLLABORATIVE EFFORT The coordinated take-down operation on Sunday evening saw a father, Madada Sibango (53) and his two sons, police officer Sandile (28) and Yamkela (23), from Nyanga and Somali businessman Abdulahi Ali Mursal (48) arrested in Bellville.
The police were assisted by crime intelligence, the drone unit, representatives of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), officials of the City of Cape and the Financial Intelligence Centre. Four vehicles and various cellphones suspected to have been used to extort money from more than 50 businesses in Kayamandi and Stellenbosch was found. Cash worth around R120 000 was also seized. The four allegedly regularly received “substantial amounts of cash” with the help of the Somali businessman. It is believed he collected the specified amounts of money on stipulated dates on behalf of the other suspects. Locals say despite the arrests, it is worrisome that a police officer is among the suspects. “If proven true, this would be extremely concerning as it raises serious questions about trust, safety and the integrity of those entrusted with protecting the community,” the movement said. Anroux Marais, provincial minister for
Police Oversight and Community Safety, said the arrests send an important message to criminal networks behind organised crimes. “[Extortion] undermines local economies, threatens livelihoods, creates fear in communities and provides fertile ground for organised criminal networks to expand,” she points out. According to Sonjani. the members of the extortion syndicates are not residents Kayamandi but reside outside the area in areas like Nyanga, Mfuleni, Delft, Kraaifontein, Kuils River and Khayelitsha. “All these activities happen among the locals, so it they should report suspicious behaviour in their immediate environment to police,” he stated. The four appeared in the Bellville Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday (18 August). They are charged in relation to extortion, money laundering and contravention of sections of the prevention of organised crime act. The case has been postponed to next Tuesday (25 August). Community members are encouraged to report extortion related crime on the police’s extortion line 0800 314 444.

Oud-hoof voor Yaël Malgas Die saak van die voormalige Stellenbosse skoolhoof wat van seksuele aanranding aangekla word, is tot Dinsdag 1 September uitgestel. Die klagte spruit volgens die klaer uit ’n voorval wat verlede Desember by ’n plaaslike skool plaasgevind het. Volgens die klaer is sy in Desember 2025 seksueel aangerandtydens die skool se jaar-eindbyeenkoms by die skool. Die Wes-Kaapse Onderwysdepartement (WKOD) het destyds aan Eikestadnuus bevestig ’n interne ondersoek is van stapel gestuur. Millicent Merton, ’n woordvoerder vir die WKOD, het gesê die beweerde voorval is op Vrydag 12 Desember aan die departement se direktoraat vir werknemersverhoudings gerapporteer. Merton het bygevoeg moontlike tugstappe kan teen die skoolhoof geneem word afhangend van die ondersoek se uitslae. Voor uitspraak oor die WKOD se ondersoek egter gelewer kon word, het die hoof besluit om vroeg af te tree. Die hofsaak gaan egter voort en die beskuldigde en sy regsverteenwoordiger het verlede Vrydag (14 Augustus) vlugtig in die Stellenbosch-landdroshof verskyn. Die oud-hoof is tans uit op borgtog en is deur die hof gemaan om geen kontak met die klaer te hê nie. Die saak is uitgestel sodat ’n afskrif van die dossier aan die verdediging verskaf kan word, waarna die saak na verwagting vir verhoor geskeduleer sal word.

Hy voeg by vir skelms maak dit nie saak of dit dag of nag is nie; hul “kriminele aktiwiteite” gaan voort. Onder die algemeenste misdrywe is inbrake by wonings en diefstal vanuit inwoners se agterplase. Thys sê munisipale infrastruktuur word ook gevandaliseer met pale van padtekens wat afgebreek, weggedra en vir skrootmetaal verkoop word. “Die misdadige aktiwiteite is oral. Die hele Idasvallei loop deur, maar ons het opgelet dat skelms hul gesteelde goedere op munisipale bates in Hillside Village verwerk en stoor. Dit is ’n area soos onder die Mertonweg-brug
en in die sloot by McCoy- en Helderbergstraat.” Dit is veral hierdie “verwerking” van gesteelde eiendom wat inwoners op hul hoede het. In ’n verklaring verduidelik die Good-raadslid Marius van Stade dringende ingryping deur beide die plaaslike polisie en die munisipaliteit is nodig. “Gesinne leef in vrees, bejaardes voel toenemend kwesbaar en werkers wat voor sonop reis, word deur misdadigers geteiken. Geen gemeenskap behoort gedwing te word om onder hierdie omstandighede te leef nie,” voer Van Stade aan. Volgens die buurtwag is hulle veral teleurgesteld in die reaksie van die munisipaliteit, omdat die toename in misdaad glo al ses jaar tydens Geïntegreerde Ontwikkelingsplan (GOP) se vergadering genoem is. Onder die voorstelle uit die gemeenskap om misdaadbekamping aan te help, was die vraag na kringsteltelevisiekameras. Thys sê die gemeenskap voel hulle is alleen gelaat om die krisis te hanteer.

Inwoners meen meer sigbare polisiëring en reaksiepatrollies van die polisie en munisipale wetstoepassers sal help. Hulle stel ook voor die muni-
sipaliteit moet meer doen om hul bates te beskerm deur omheining op te rig, beter beligting te verskaf en om by probleemgebiede waar gesteelde goedere deur misdadigers verwerk en gestoor word, in te loer. Volgens Stuart Grobbelaar, ’n woordvoerder vir die Stellenbosch-munisipaliteit, is die munisipaliteit bewus van klagtes en [misdadige] voorvalle in die buurt. Hy sê die munisipaliteit tree in wanneer dit binne sy mandaat is. “Patrollies word ook gereeld uitgevoer,” sê Grobbelaar. “Ons moedig inwoners aan om ook enige misdadige aktiwiteite by die polisie aan te meld, aangesien die voorkoming en bekamping van misdaad primêr die verantwoordelikheid van die polisie is, met die munisipaliteit wat ’n ondersteunende rol speel.” Grobbelaar voeg by die munisipaliteit bly in gereelde kontak met buurtwagte om probleme te bespreek. Thys nooi alle Hillsiders om by die buurtwag aan te sluit en nie die reg in eie hande te neem nie.

Dié Stellenbosser, wat oor die jare heen veral agter sy kamera langs die kantlyn van skolesportwedstryde te sien was, is verlede Vrydagmiddag (14 Augustus) tydens ’n branderplankrykompetisie in die Suid-Kaap dood. Lombard was die internasionale verkoopsbestuurder van Oldenburg Vineyards in die Banhoekvallei en die eienaar van Thys Lombard Photography and Videography, wat veral in sportaksie gespesialiseer het. Hy het ook eens as vryskutfotograaf vir Eikestadnuus gewerk. Dié kranige branderplankryer was glo ’n deelnemer aan die Vintners Surf Classic-kompetisie, wat jaarliks diegene in die wynbedryf in Jongensfontein byeen bring om geld vir liefdadigheid in te samel. Luidens ’n verklaring van die Nasionale Seereddingsinstituut (NSRI) is sy Stilbaai-reddingspan omstreeks 14:00 ontbied ná berigte van ’n 61-jarige man wat in die water by Sandstrand, Jongensfontein, sy bewussyn verloor het. Ná skool het hy jare lank in die wynbedryf gewerk voordat hy besluit het om op sy fotografie te fokus,” het Daniel gesê. “Wanneer jy by ’n rugbywedstryd opgedaag het, sou jy altyd uitkyk vir hom. Hy het altyd die grootste glimlag gehad, was altyd bly om jou te sien en het altyd ’n storie gehad om te vertel oor spelers wat hy ontmoet het.” Daniel het Lombard se fotografie as die beste storieverteller beskryf. “Baie Suid-Afrikaanse rugbyspelers is van hul skooldae af op skoolrugbydae deur
sy lens vasgevang. Hy het vorige, huidige en toekomstige Springbokspelers met sy fotografie geraak. Spelers soos Markus Muller en Damian Willemse sal hiervan getuig. “Hy was algeheel ’n wonderlike ou, rugbymal deur en deur, en bowenal ’n ware heer. Hy het altyd tyd vir almal gehad en ’n storie om te vertel. Die plasing het gelui dat Lombard die dag ná sy dood (Saterdag 15 Augustus) by die interskolewedstryd tussen Paul Roos Gimnasium en Grey Kollege met kamera en foon in die hand sou wees om te doen wat hy liefhet, “maar vir Thys het vandag nooit gekom nie”.
Lesing vier Eikestadse prof Avril Fillies Tydens die jaarlikse gedenklesing by die fakulteit teologie van die Universiteit Stellenbosch (US) is verlede Woensdag (12 Augustus) opnuut hulde gebring aan die lewe en akademiese nalatenskap van wyle prof. Mary-Anne Plaatjies-van Huffel. Sy sou die eerste vroulike professor van kleur wees wat in die fakulteit aangestel sou word, maar is kort voordat sy haar intreerede sou lewer oorlede. Die tema van die lesing, “A feminist apophatic mysticism: resisting the demystification of Black theology”, het ’n diepgaande vraag aan die orde gestel: Hoe kan die geloofservarings van Swart vroue – veral hul persoonlike en soms onverklaarbare ervarings van God – ernstig opgeneem en gerespekteer word sonder om dit deur tradisionele teologiese raamwerke te probeer definieer of beheer? Die lesing is deur prof. Keri Day, die Elmer G Homrighausen-voorsitter en professor in konstruktiewe teologie en Afrika-Amerikaanse Godsdiens aan die Princeton Teologiese Seminarie in die VSA, aangebied. Dit bring feministiese teologie, mistiek en swart teologie byeen en beklemtoon dat swart vroue se geloofservarings gevorm word deur hul geleefde werklikheid, waar-
onder rassisme, diskriminasie, armoede, kolonialisme en ander vorme van onderdrukking. Tog is geloof nie altyd iets wat volledig verklaar of in vaste kategorieë geplaas kan word nie. “Apofatiese” teologie herinner gelowiges daaraan dat God groter is as die menslike vermoë om Hom te beskryf of te verstaan, terwyl mistiek fokus op die diep, persoonlike ervaring van God – soms op maniere waarvoor daar eenvoudig nie genoeg woorde is nie. Francis Fourie, een van die drie oorblywende susters van Plaatjies-van Huffel, en haar man, Danville, het spesiaal uit Abu Dhabi in die Verenigde Arabiese Emirate gereis om die lesing by te woon. “Die lesing daag ons uit om nie elke geestelike ervaring onmiddellik te probeer verklaar, kategoriseer of ‘weg te verduidelik’ nie,” sê Fourie. RESPEKTEER DIE MISTERIE “Dit vra dat ons eerder luister na die verhale en geloofservarings van swart vroue en erken dat daar waarde en waarheid kan wees in dit wat nie altyd in woorde uitgedruk kan word nie. In wese is die boodskap eenvoudig, maar kragtig: Ons hoef nie altyd die misterie van geloof te verklaar nie. Soms moet ons dit bloot respekteer. Die geloofservarings van swart

persoonlike ervarings die mistiek van God op ’n menslike manier te ervaar. Jesus het in sy lewenstyd saam met gewone mense op aarde pyn en lyding ervaar, maar nooit sy einddoel vergeet oor waarom hy hier op aarde geplaas is nie.” Vir studente in teologie en Jan Publiek is daar stof tot nadenke oor hoe elkeen God beskou en ervaar en Plaatjies-Van Huffel het in haar leeftyd die eerste tree op hierdie pad vir ander swart vroue gegee. Sy was die eerste vrou van kleur wat in 1992 in die destydse NG Sendingkerk as predikant in Robertson ingesweer is én het dit haar doel gemaak om vroue in die Verenigde Gereformeerde Kerk in Suid-Afrika ’n stem te gee.

Manual sê dit is steeds moeilik om te glo wat gebeur het, maar haar nuwe verloofring is bewys dat Gladwin Wanza haar gevra het om te trou. “Ek was heeltemal in ’n dwaal,” skerts die Hoërskool Cloetesville-onderwyser. Sy is Vrydagoggend na die skoolhoof, Brandon du Plessis, se kantoor ontbied om haar vakke te bespreek. Aangesien sy ekonomie vir gr.12-leerders, toerisme vir gr.10- en ekonomiese bestuurwetenskappe vir gr.9-leerders aanbied, het Manual aanvanklik niks vreemds agtergekom nie. “Dit was ’n diep gesprek oor my onderrigvakke, maar die hoof het wel ’n paar keer gesê ek moet my doekie afhaal,” vertel Manual. Synde dit die oggend gereën het en die skool later ’n spesiale geleentheid in die aanloop tot hul derby met die Hoërskool Lückhoff gehad het, wou Manual seker maak haar hare bly mooi vir die geleentheid. “Die hoof het verduidelik hy gaan net vinnig ’n vorm by die sekretaresse kry toe my kinders ingebars kom en sê daar is fout

Here help, want wat het nou gebeur? “In die middelplein sien ek toe daar is fout, want leerders staan buite en staar op na my klas.” Volgens Manual het sy in haar haas byna teen die trappe op gevlieg en by haar klaskamerdeur sien sy toe die deurmekaarspul – leerders staan in ’n bondel, pluk mekaar rond en raas. “Ek het probeer deurkom en gestamp en gestoot en met die laaste stamp sien ek daar is Gladwin op sy knieë.” Manual sê die skok was só groot sy het byna flou geword,
maar gelukkig kon sy lank genoeg regop bly sodat Wanza die groot vraag kon vra. En haar antwoord? “Ja, natuurlik!” Die paartjie het mekaar vyf maande gelede ontmoet en is vir die afgelope drie maande amptelik saam. Albei meen hul verhouding was so bedoel en hulle het onmiddellik geweet hulle het hul lewensmaat gevind. E-scooter issues still not sorted Yaël Malgas
The legalities of using electronic scooters on public roads may be in limbo, but it seems users of GoNow scooters in Stellenbosch have no qualms about zipping around town on the blue vehicles. Despite Stellenbosch Municipality issuing a notice the local micro-mobility transport provider as of 1 March, GoNow’s e-scooters are still in used in and around town. Among the users are groups of underage children, which was originally one of the reasons the municipality suspended GoNow’s services in town (“GoNow in die wiele gery,” Eikestadnuus, 11 June). LEGAL GREY AREA PERSISTS After serving GoNow with a notice to suspend its operations in town, the municipality said the national traffic and transport legislation (National Road Traffic Act 93 of 1996) and regulations (National Road Traffic Regulations, 2000) made the use of e-scooters illegal. The municipality also cited two unrelated accidents involving minors as reasons for the suspension. GoNow co-founder Jacob Levitan explained that these two children, aged 12 and 14 respectively, had circumvented GoNow’s age restriction of 16 years by using the credentials of their older siblings. However, despite the company’s promise of various safety features like user verification and age controls, underage children can still regularly be on GoNow e-scooters in Stellenbosch’s CBD. Stellenbosch Municipality has sought legal advice about the scooters. “The municipality is attending to this through our legal services and we are waiting for a meeting to address the legal opinion that has now been obtained to discuss the way forward,” said municipal spokesperson Stuart Grobbelaar. At the time of the issuing of the notice, Levitan urged the municipality not to halt operations summarily, but rather to “constructively engage” and create “a clear interim framework for micromobility in Stellenbosch”. NO STRAIGHT ANSWER Levitan, who is also the CEO of GoNow, said the company has opted not halt its Stellenbosch operations despite the municipality’s “semi-formal suspension letter”. According to Levitan its now seems Stellenbosch Municipality is “moving away from shutting down the service, towards embracing being the first South African town with e-scooters as a mobility option, given the imminent amendment”. “We have recently discovered that the legal framework for GoNow is more positive than the municipality originally thought. The National Road Traffic Act (NRTA, Act 93 of 1996) does not explicitly exclude e-bikes or e-scooters from the definition of a motor vehicle. This ambiguity was addressed in the NRT Amendment Act (Act 8 of 2024), enacted by Parliament on 10 December 2024,” Levitan explained. “The definition of a motor vehicle was amended to exclude various vehicles, including power-assisted pedal cycles (e-bikes) and vehicles with a maximum design speed of 45 km/h classified as environmentally friendly vehicles (which includes e-scooters). The implementation date and regulations of the NRT Amendment Act 8 of 2024 have not yet been published, but it is only a matter of time. The legality of the scooters, which the municipality was questioning, is therefore (nearly) moot.” After the initial media reports ridership was down and the company tempo-
rarily switched off the ID verification feature as costly to run. However, Levitan reiterated that the company is firmly committed to the 16-and-over age limit and the verification will soon be switched back on.
BEYOND STELLENBOSCH Despite the ongoing local dispute GoNow continues to expand its footprint and has quickly become a fan favourite among students of the North-West University (NWU), where it launched operations in late last month. But Louis Jacobs, a spokesperson for the NWU, said the university has not approved the use of e-scooters on its premises. “GoNow has approached the NWU and they were informed that should the NWU at any time consider allowing any company to make their product available to our students, such a process will have to follow the NWU’s financial policy, which includes a competitive procurement process,” Jacobs said. “This company will have to prepare and submit a comprehensive operational plan to the university.” NWU has received documentation from GoNow which is currently being reviewed. Jacobs added that NWU recognises the potential benefits of introducing escooters, in terms of environmental sustainability, reducing carbon emissions and providing an alternative, convenient mode of transport for students and staff. “The university is therefore supportive of exploring innovative and sustainable mobility solutions, but will have to ensure full compliance with the university’s governance, legal and procurement requirements, as well as implementing appropriate measures to address safety, liability, and operational risks ,” he said. Local reports indicate students, high school learners and security guards have taken to the micro-transport mode. CREATING THE LEGISLATION Stellenbosch residents and road users aren’t the only critics of e-scooters. The City of Cape Town has set a deadline for safer e-scooter use on Sea Point Promenade. This follows public complaints about the use of motorised scooters on the popular walkway. In a statement, the City explained that various safety measures will be put in place to improve pedestrian safety while providing clear rules for the responsible use of electric mobility devices. The City aims to publish a management protocol and install relevant signage by the end the month, while rental operators have until the end of September to comply with the new safety measures. These measures include: a maximum speed of 8 km/h in shared pedestrian areas; one rider per device; and appropriate age, supervision and safety requirements . But Stellenbosch Municipality noted that GoNow users in town are not limited to a specific, designated recreational area like the promenade. “The Sea Point Promenade was agreed on as the only space where this could be allowed in the City – as it is zoned as public open space – with no impact on roads, pavements, and vehicular traffic,” Grobbelaar said. “We are moving ahead with our plan as communicated. Legal opinion [has been] received and the process is now around how this impacts the work of various municipal departments and what is the best way forward.” Levitan said GoNow foresees a positive future for the micro-mobility industry in South Africa. “We remain fully committed to working with local authorities and operating within the legal framework. In the meantime, GoNow is showing lawmakers what those laws should look like,” he said.

Hub to unlock economic potential Stellenbosch Municipality officially opened the new Kayamandi Bridge Exchange Hub, marking an important investment in the community and the broader economic potential of the area.

The R7,9 million facility provides a modern, enclosed and secure space for commuters, informal traders and businesses, with lock-up facilities and improved infrastructure designed to support economic activity in one of Kayamandi’s busiest areas. Speaking at the official opening last Wednesday (13 August), mayor Jeremy Fasser said the project was about far more than constructing a new facility. “This is not simply a new facility. It is an investment in Kayamandi, in the people who live and work here and in the economic future of this part of Stellenbosch.” The hub responds to a need that has been identified by the Kayamandi community over a number of years, following extensive discussion on the need for a safer, more appropriate and functional space for traders and commuters. The new facility provides a significant improvement on informal trading conditions, while bringing greater structure and order to an area used by thousands of people every day. “The fact that we can stand here today and open a modern, enclosed, safe and lockable facility is remarkable,” said Fasser. “This is something the community has spoken about and needed for years, and we are very pleased to see that need translated into a practical investment that residents can use every day.” The facility also strengthens the connection between Kayamandi and the greater Stellenbosch economy. Thousands of people travel between Kayamandi, the Stellenbosch CBD and surrounding communities
for work, education, business and other opportunities daily. The hub is already beginning to show its potential, with a number of businesses now operating from the facility, including various food outlets, a nail salon and a proudly Kayamandi-based clothing brand. “These businesses are an early indication of the economic activity and opportunities that this facility can unlock, and we are confident that the hub will continue to grow from strength to strength.” The municipality extended its gratitude to its partners and friends at the Western Cape Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning for their partnership and support in making the project possible. The Kayamandi Bridge Exchange Hub is also being positioned as the first of a number of similar investments aimed at unlocking the full potential of existing municipal markets and trading spaces across Stellenbosch. The municipality is looking ahead at opportunities to undertake similar upgrades at the Cloetesville Market and Ida’s Valley Market, with the aim of upgrading these facilities in a similar fashion. “We see this as the beginning of something bigger,” said Fasser. “We want to look at what we can do at our other markets to unlock their full potential. The Cloetesville Market and Idas Valley Market are part of that conversation. So, watch this space!” The municipality calls on residents, traders and commuters to take ownership of the facility. “The growth of Stellenbosch must create opportunities across all our communities,” said Fasser. “Kayamandi is important here, an important part of its economic future.”

Workshops for targeted skills Sometimes a short course may still take too much time, but a workshop could be perfect to develop or expand a skill. “We've also started offering workshops as a way to deliver concentrated bursts of knowledge and skills where it really matters,” Pieters explains further. “For example, our online Plain Language Writing Workshop is designed for professionals who create, edit or review workplace documents and want to make sure information lands like it should. “And for the more creative souls among us we've just put a wonderful treat together: a Creative Writing Workshop that supports participants in writing creatively in English, Afrikaans or isiXhosa, gently guided by lead facilitator Jonathan Amid and visiting guest writers. I'm particularly excited about this one; it starts in September and we still have space available.” Short courses on offer
A wide range of topics is covered by the short courses, with each course shaped around the needs of its intended participants. Some focus on the practical demands of ofce communication: professional emails, telephone conversations, meetings, minutes and the everyday challenges of keeping an ofce running. Die Universiteit Stellenbosch (US) en die Maties-rugbyklub het ’n strategiese borgskapvennootskap met die bekende finansiële diensverskaffer Salt EB aangegaan. Die vennootskap, wat op Woensdag (12 Augustus) amptelik by die Danie Craven-stadion aangekondig is, behels onder meer assosiatiewe naamgewingsregte met betrekking tot die stadion en ’n kampusrugbyborgskap. Dit weerspieël ’n internasionaal erkende model waardeur universiteite en sportorganisasies private beleggings lok sonder dat hul erfenis in gedrang kom. Die Danie Craven-stadion behou sy geskiedkundige identiteit, terwyl die vennootskap met Salt EB help om in studentegeleenthede, sportuitnemendheid en gemeenskapsimpak te belê. Eerder as om die identiteit van die fasiliteit te vervang, berus die vennootskap op ’n assosiatiewe naammodel wat Salt EB se bydrae as ’n strategiese vennoot erken, terwyl dit verseker dat die stadion se naam, geskiedenis en nalatenskap aan die kern van sy identiteit bly. Die stadion sal danksy hierdie vennootskap voortaan as die “Danie Craven-stadion met die steun van Salt EB” bekendstaan. Erfeniselemente wat met die stadion geassosieer word, sal deur voortgesette storievertelling, herdenkingsprojekte en erfenisinstallasies beklemtoon word. “Die aankondiging is ’n belangrike mylpaal in die versterking van die universiteit se verbintenis tot sportuitnemendheid, strategiese vennootskappe en die voortgesette ontwikkeling van
sportgeriewe van wêreldgehalte,” het prof. Deresh Ramjugernath, die rektor en visekanselier van die US, gesê. “Ons is baie dankbaar vir Salt EB en sien uit na ’n jare lange vennootskap om die Maties en die breër sportgemeenskap te dien.” Eddie Strydom, die voorsitter van die Salt EB-raad, het gesê hulle sien daarna uit om saam met die US te werk. “Die US is nie net ’n toonaangewende universiteit wat ’n diverse sportervaring bied nie, maar dit is ook vir ons ’n eer om met die Maties-rugbyklub – wat ’n lang rugbygeskiedenis het wat so ver as 1875 terugstrek en wêreldwyd bekend is – geassosieer te word.” Drikus Hancke, die hoof van rugby by Maties Sport, het bygevoeg: “Dit is inderdaad ’n nuwe era vir Maties Rugby. Die vennootskap verseker nie net die langtermynvolhoubaarheid vir die klub nie, maar sal ook studenteatlete direk bevoordeel deur finansiering vir rugbyprogramme, insluitende talentidentifisering en die ondersteuning van hoëprestasie-spanne. “Salt EB is ook die kampusrugbyvennoot. Dit is ’n belegging in die ontspanningsrugby-studentegemeenskap. Kampusrugby bied aan koshuise en pendelstudente die geleentheid om mee te ding en rugby te geniet. Hier werk Salt EB saam met Maties Rugby om te verseker dat dit só aangebied word dat dit tot ’n transformerende studenteervaring by die US bydra. “Kampusrugby voed die hoëprestasiespanne en die volhoubaarheid van hierdie roete sal verbeter word deur saam met vennote te werk wat ontwikkeling en geleenthede waardeer.”

Warriors Soccer Academy of Stellenbosch claimed the third place in the SCSC Women’s Tournament 2026, hosted by the Swartland Community Sport Centre (SCSC) in Malmesbury on Women’s Day (Sunday 9 August). Held as part of Women’s Day celebrations, the tournament brought youth girls’ soccer teams together from communities, including Stellenbosch, Malmesbury, Mbekweni, Kraaifontein and Franschhoek, giving young women an opportunity to compete, showcase their talent and connect through football. The tournament featured a group-stage competition followed by semi-finals, a third-place play-off and the final, providing a full day of competitive football. While the team from Stellenbosch claimed the bronze medal, Batalions from Mbekweni were crowned champions after they trumped Kraaifontein Female Football Academy in the final. For Alive Dyasi, SCSC’s Football for Development coach, the tournament was about creating opportunities for girls and challenging the limited visibility of women’s football at community level. “In Swartland ladies’ football is not yet popular, with most attention still focused on boys’ teams. That is exactly why I wanted this tournament to happen. Girls need to know there is a place for them on the field too.” Bringing teams from different commu-

nities together showed the potential of women’s football to unite communities and change perceptions, he added. “From the first game to the final, I saw passion, respect and real team spirit. The players gave everything, the coaches supported each other and the supporters brought great energy. It was my first time hosting a ladies’ tournament, and although tough, seeing everyone come together as one football family made it worthwhile.” The tournament was supported by SCORE – Changing Lives Through Sport, Hope Through Action and other partners and sponsors. The organisers hope to build on it by creating more opportunities for young women to participate in football, develop their skills and compete at community level.

Trek into Knorhoek valley
Trail runners will head into the scenic Knorhoek Valley below Simonsberg for Dirtopia’s Into the Valley Trail Run, presented by Sportsmans Warehouse, this Sunday (23 August). Although the event starts and finishes at Muratie Wine Estate, the 6 km and 12 km routes will take runners away from the usual Muratie trails. The courses head towards neighbouring Quoin Rock and Knorhoek before reaching custom-built Dirtopia singletrack in the valley, with a mixture of vineyard paths, mountain slopes and forest trails. The 12 km event starts at 08:45, followed by the 6 km run at 09:00. Registration will be done at the Dirtopia Trail Centre from 07:30. Pre-entry costs R170 for the 6 km and R230 for the 12 km, with a R75 pre-entry fee for runners under 18. Pre-entries close tomorrow (Friday 21 August), while late entries will be taken on event morning. All finishers will receive a medal, while prizes include Sportsmans Warehouse vouchers, SOX footwear and Muratie wines. Refreshment stations will be available along the routes, with food, coffee and wine tasting will be available at Muratie afterwards. For Van der Stel-Evergreens, Kylemore and Raithby Universals their respective seasons ended on a sour note as they were forced to bow the knee to stronger opposition on Saturday (15 August). SU Maties, however, can still save face in their last three Super League A encounters. In Super League A, Van der Stel-Evergreens’ woes continued as they suffered a 139-0 thumping at the hands of UWC, while SU Maties were handed a 40-14 defeat by Hamilton. As the last round of matches
wound up in Super League C, league winners Rangers were too strong for Kylemore (3128) and Busy Bee used their homeground advantage in their winning outing against Raith Universals (36-22). Meanwhile, only one Stellenbosch team managed to notch up a victory in the Northern League at the weekend, with Stellenbosch-Coronations claiming the spoils in their derby against Cloetesville with a 27-34 triumph. Log leaders Blue Stars United suffered their second defeat of the season, going down 24-18 to Whistling Wheels in Eerste River, Excelsior could not withstand the advances of Police-Blackheath (10-16) and Fisantekraal were just too strong for Faure (53-35).
This week sees Maties in action in two matches; first they take on Super League A winners Villager at Brookside in Claremont on Wednesday (19 August), followed by their penultimate match of the season when they host stragglers UniMil in Stellenbosch on Saturday 22 August. The result of the clash against Villager was not available at the time of print. Franschhoek, who have already been relegated to Super League B, will return to action for their last match when they travel to face Durbell on Saturday. In the Northern League, two derbies will definitely be a cause for much excitement, with Blakes locking horns with Corries and Excelsior hosting Cloetesville in the other fixture. SA Open will return Following the resounding success of this year’s Investec South African Open at Stellenbosch Golf Club, Golf RSA has announced that the 116th Investec South African Open will return to the picturesque Cape Winelands next year. Golf’s second-oldest open enjoyed record success when it was held in the City of Oaks from 26 February to 1 March, generating almost R300 million for the local economy in a powerful partnership between the Sunshine Tour, DP World Tour and PGA Tour. On Monday (17 August), the organisers announced the championship will be staged again at the Stellenbosch Golf Club from Thursday 4 to Sunday 7 March 2027. The championship continues to be a premier showcase of the global strategic alliance among the Sunshine Tour, DP World Tour and PGA Tour, to be buoyed even further in 2027 with an increase of the prize fund to US$2 million. A further elevation among the leading opens, for the first time ever it has offered exemptions into this year’s Open and Masters, two iconic majors Casey Jarvis’ victory has given him a place in.
