Deursettingsvermoë, passie en goeie ondersteuning is wat die matriekklas van 2025 deurgedra het en hul uitslae spreek daarvan. Só meen Stellenzicht Sekondêr se skoolhoof, Carol Abrahams, wat Dinsdag (13 Januarie) die skool se voormalige matrikulante se eindeksamenuitslae oorhandig het. Stellenzicht, in Jamestown, se slaagsyfer was 82,7% – ’n effense afname van die vorige jaar se 82,9%. Tog sê Abrahams verlede jaar se matriekklas het die skoolgemeenskap trots gemaak, veral omdat so baie leerders van die geen-fooi-skool verskeie uitdagings moes trotseer net om hul skoolloopbaan te kon voltooi. Een so ’n leerder is Yolanda Jonkers (18) wat byna nie haar laaste vraestel geskryf het nie. Abrahams vertel Yolanda het deur die hele matriekeksamen erge pyn gehad en op die dag van Afrikaans II, die laaste vraestel wat sy moes aflê, was Yolanda so siek dat sy Stellenbosch-hospitaal toe eerder as skool toe is. Yolanda en haar tannie was te voet op pad terug na Devonvallei, waar hulle op ’n plaas woon, toe Abrahams hulle langs die pad opgelaai het. “Ek het haar gevra of sy nie wel kans sien om haar laaste vraestel te skryf nie. Dit sou haar hele eksamen in gedrang bring, maar daar was nog tyd om haar by die eksamenlokaal te kry,” vertel Abrahams. Die tiener het toe ingestem en met ’n Energade en ’n paar pynpille het Yolanda deur haar laaste eksamen gekom. Vandeesweek het die skoolhoof en leerder ’n emosionele reünie by die skool gehad – nog meer omdat Yolanda al haar vakke geslaag het. Volgens Yolanda gaan dit nou beter met haar gesondheid en is sy verlig dat alles goed afgeloop het. Haar plan is om verder te studeer en óf ’n afrigter óf ’n persoonlike afrigter te word. “Baie van ons leerders het hul eie lewensverhale. Daar was ups and downs vir hulle almal, maar ons het die vorige jaar se slaagsyfer as mikpunt vir hulle voorgehou en hulle het hard gewerk om hul uitslae te behaal. Die skool sou ook nie hierdie prestasie kon behaal

sonder die deursettingsvermoë van die gr.12-onderwysers nie. Hulle is ’n jong, innoverende span wat goed saamwerk en gereeld aanpas en goeie praktyke deel,” verduidelik Abrahams. SÓ LYK DIE UITSLAE Die Kaapse Wynland-distrik het ’n algehele slaagsyfer van 84,6% behaal met drie Stellenbosse skole wat met ’n 100%slaagsyfer spog. Die Hoër Meisieskool Bloemhof en Rhenish Girls’ High School het weer skoonskip gemaak en vanjaar is Paul Roos Gimnasium (PRG) ook deel van die groep. PRG se matriekklas van 2024 het ’n 99,6% slaagsyfer gehad. Onder die skole wat ook hul slaagsyfer verbeter het, was die Hoërskool Stellenbosch – op van 97,3% (2024) na 99,2%; Calling Academy wat op is na 98,4% van 93,3%; en Groendal Sekondêr wat aansienlik verbeter het op hul 62%-slaagsyfer in 2024 na 70,4% vir verlede jaar se matriekklas. Die Hoërskool Franschhoek se uitslae was bestendig met 98,4% – dieselfde slaagsyfer as die 2024-klas. Die Hoërskool Lückhoff se slaagsyfer is ook af – van 81,2% na 77,4%. Volgens die Wes-Kaapse Onderwysdepartement (WKOD) het die aantal onderpresterende skole – hoërskole met ’n slaagsyfer onder 60% – van vyf in 2024 na slegs twee in 2025 verminder. Die provinsiale minister van onderwys, David Maynier, het die 2025matriekklas vir hul slaagsyfer geprys, wat die hoogste nog vir die provinsie was. “Ongelooflik – die klas van 2025 het die hoogste retensiekoers in die land teen 70% behaal, wat ook die top-retensiekoers is wat ons provinsie sedert 2021 gehad het. Dit beteken ons het meer leerders met die geleentheid om hul eksamens te slaag en skool volgens skedule te voltooi, sodat hulle hul loopbane en verdere studies kan begin,” meen Maynier. Brand woed, maar nou onder beheer Yaël Malgas Brandbestryders, boere en vrywilligers spook steeds almal saam om die dae lange brand in die Franschhoekgebied uiteindelik te blus. Die brand, wat teen Maandag (12 Januarie) oor sowat 55 km en na beraming 17 000 hektaar gestrek het, het verlede Woensdag (7 Januarie) teen die berghange agter die Langrug- informele nedersetting in Franschhoek uitgebreek. Gister (Woensdag 14 Januarie) was daar steeds geïsoleerde gebiede oop grond in Franschhoek wat aan die brand was, met die snikkende hitte en wind wat brandbestryders se taak die afgelope week bemoeilik het. Anton Bredell, die minister van plaaslike regering, omgewingsake en ontwikkelingsbeplanning vir die Wes-Kaap, het Maandag (12 Januarie) op ’n inligtingsessie gesê in ’n stadiun was daar op een tydstip 25 gelyktydige brande in die provinsie. “In enige ander provinsie sou dit chaos gewees het, maar hier het ons ’n stelsel wat goed werk,” meen hy. Bredell het saam met die plaaslike burgemeesters Jeremy Fasser (Stellenbosch), Stephen Korabie (Drakenstein) en dr. Elna von Schlicht (Kaapse Wynland) en lede van die media terugvoer van die multi-dissiplinêre taakspan oor die voortslepende brande ontvang. Dit raak moeilik om brande te bestry . . . en toe te sien dat geen lewensverlies of skade aan infrastruktuur voorkom nie. Ons het die afgelope paar dae die verpletterende uitwerking wat brande het en hoe moeilik dit is om dit onder beheer te bring, beleef,” sê Fasser. Hy sê mense moet herinner word om nie sigaretstompies by hul motorvenster uit te gooi nie, maar wat die grootste verskil sal maak, is om meer bronne en personeel aan te stel. Local actor gets ﬁrst big screen role Rico Fourie, an actor from Stellenbosch, recently appeared in the South African television drama series, Kelders van Geheime on etv. It was a dream come true for the 36-year-old, who for the first time could show his acting skills to the more than two million people who tune in to watch the popular Afrikaans drama on weekdays. Fourie played the role of Gerrit Nel, the childhood friend of Tjoppie Marais who came to ruffle some feathers. The former model featured in some episodes of the series’ second season. “Even though I was only in the series for a couple of episodes, I have had people come up to me in the shops, asking me if I was on TV. I found it a little strange at first, but it was quite sweet,” said Fourie.

Kelders van Geheime is based on the wheeling and dealings of a community that lives on Soebatskloof, which is a wine farm in the Cape. It focuses on three families: the Abrahams, Syster and Marais households. Fourie also acted opposite one of his favourite actors, Sandra Prinsloo. “I was always a big fan of her, from when I was young and still dreamt of being an actor of her calibre,” he added. Other actors in the drama included Vinette Ebrahim, Cedwyn Joel, Rushney Ferguson and Duane Williams. “It was an amazing experience as the cast and crew welcomed me and made me feel at ease.” Fourie is the son of South African international track superstars, Johan and Marinda Fourie. He has been in the modelling and entertainment industry for over a decade as an actor, voiceover

artist, model and radio presenter. Over the past 15 years, he has modelled for various photographers, designers, campaigns, TV commercials, catalogues, magazines and blogs. Fourie is a signed actor with the MMM Agency. He also has a heart for charity and was for a few years involved in the Twitter Blanket Drive and Project Braveheart (anti-bullying) campaigns. The blanket drive collected thousands of blankets from people on the social media platform Twitter, now called X. This was donated to several charity organisations under the Santa Showbox Project umbrella. Viewers will see Fourie in season two of Een Keer Om Die Son on Kyknet and Showmax this year. The actor is also excited about his first supporting role in an Afrikaans feature film set for release later this year.

Boland now boasts its own water sommelier Aarto to start mid-year Yaël Malgas The Boland may be well known for its wine and by extension its sommeliers, but now the region also boasts its very own water sommelier. A water sommelier is a trained expert, just like the wine experts, who understands the taste, mineral composition, source and terroir of different natural, in this case, waters. “Just as wine sommeliers guide guests through wine styles and pairings, water sommeliers help people discover the incredible diversity of flavours, textures and origins in fine waters,” Nico Pieterse, one of only two certified water sommeliers in South Africa, explains. Pieterse partnered with the Lanzerac Hotel and launched the country’s first fine water-tasting experience. At the tasting room Pieterse shows off his curated collection that includes waters aged up to 100 000 years, sourced from glaciers, volcanic springs and remote rainfall around the globe. According to Pieterse he founded The Fine Water Company in 2021, specifically with the intention of curating and showcasing exceptional natural waters from South Africa and around the world. “We work with restaurants, hotels, private clients and wellness spaces to introduce fine-water programmes, pairings, and tastings. The concept is still relatively new in South Africa, so a big part of the business involves education – teaching people that water is not ‘just water’. It has flavour, structure, personality and provenance,” he explains. Like wine, coffee, olive oils and other tasting favourites, water has an enormous range of texture and flavours. Pieterse explains this distinct range depends on the minerals, source and age.

into the spotlight as a premium, sensory product,” Pieterse says. “I’ve always been passionate about elevating water culture and helping people see water as more than just a commodity. Water has terroir, character, age and an identity shaped by nature – some waters we serve are up to 100 000 years old. As I grew deeper into the world of fine water, I realised there was a real gap in South Africa – and globally – for a place where people could experience water the way we experience wine. That inspired me to open the world’s first dedicated Fine Water Tasting Room at Lanzerac.” Among the international water collection at the Stellenbosch tasting room is Fromin, a Czech spring water from a protected ice-age aquifer; Three Bays, ancient aquifer water from Australia with exceptionally high minerality; and Perlage, sparkling water with a delicate, fine bubble from Poland. The collection changes seasonally. Pieterse explains the specialised qualification can only be completed through recognised institutions such as the Fine Water Academy. The training covers water chemistry, sensory evaluation, bottling processes, sourcing geology, sustainability and advanced tasting techniques. But what is the best water Pieterse has tasted? South African motorists will start with a clean slate when the country’s new traffic demerit system is finally implemented, the Road Traffic Infringement Agency (RTIA) has confirmed. However, the nationwide rollout of the Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences (Aarto) Act has been delayed once again, pushing the countrywide implementation date from 1 December 2025 to mid-2026. The announcement brings welcome relief to drivers who feared that existing traffic violations would count against them when the new system launches. “Everyone gets zero points to start. Rack up 15 points, and your licence is suspended for three months. Do that three times, and your licence isn’t suspended, it’s cancelled,” the RTIA stated in recent social media posts. The Aarto Act represents a fundamental departure from South Africa’s current traffic violation system. Unlike the existing Criminal Procedure Act framework, Aarto introduces a point-based penalty system designed to encourage safer driving through progressive consequences for repeat offenders. More serious infractions such as running red lights or moderate speeding will result in two to four points, while the most dangerous offences, including driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, will carry a six-point penalty. The system was originally designed for gradual rollout across the country, but legal, technical and administrative challenges have repeatedly forced authorities to push back the nationwide deployment timeline. Currently, Aarto operates a pilot project in Johannesburg and Tshwane, without the demerit point system. The clean slate will not apply to existing traffic fine emails demanding payments.

Stork delivers festive babies Health facilities in the Western Cape welcomed 171 babies on Christmas Day and 132 on New Year’s Day, bringing festive joy to families across the province. Among the New Year’s Day celebrations was the arrival of a baby girl at Stellenbosch Hospital at 01:38. Weighing 3,2 kg, this bundle of joy made history as the third baby born in the province in 2026 and the first girl to arrive in the new year. The precious little girl followed two baby boys born at Mowbray Maternity Hospital at midnight and Paarl Hospital three minutes later. “As we step into a new year, we celebrate the first precious lives born in 2026,” said Mireille Wenger, provincial Health and Wellness minister. “Our focus is on giving every child a strong and healthy start through quality care.”

History and heritage will meet in the Cape Winelands as the Montreux Jazz Festival Franschhoek (MJFSA) – the first-ever Montreux Jazz Festival (MJF) on African soil – revealed the poster that will define its identity for 2026: a work by South African master artist Sam Nhlengethwa. Continuing the nearly 60-year-old MJF tradition of pairing art and music, the Franschhoek festival organisers collaborated with Elana Brundyn, one of South Africa’s most respected cultural leaders, known for her work in building museums, shaping collections and redefining how art engages with society across the African continent. Brundyn invited a select group of South African artists, each chosen for their distinctive voice, to interpret the spirit of the upcoming festival and the global MJF brand. “Sam has painted our musicians, our people and our joy for decades,” said Brundyn. “His deep connection to jazz, and his instinctive understanding of how sound becomes emotion, made him the natural choice for this historic first.” A lifelong jazz devotee, Nhlengethwa’s visual language has long celebrated SA’s musical heritage, paying tribute to icons such as Hugh Masekela, Miriam Makeba, and Miles Davis. His poster for MJFSA – painted over a decade ago – features jazz great Charles Mingus and, as he puts it, “It’s as if Mingus was waiting for Montreux to come to Africa”. Apply for YearBeyond The provincial Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) is inviting young people across the province to apply for opportunities within the YearBeyond Programme. YearBeyond is a youth in service partnership between government, the National Youth Development Agency, donors, and NGOs. Local learner shines on the global stage Albertus Willem van Niekerk, a learner at Paul Roos Gymnasium, was one of four South Africans to shine on the global stage during the World Innovative Science Project Olympiad (Wispo) in Indonesia last month. The competition, hosted in Bali by the Indonesia Scientific Society from Wednesday 10 to Saturday 13 December 2025, brought together young scientists from around the world to showcase innovative research and encourage international collaboration. Van Niekerk, a Grade 11 learner this year, achieved exceptional success by winning both a gold medal and a prestigious Grand Award for his research project, “In vitro growth inhibition of Penicillium digitatum by lavender oil”. His project explored the potential of lavender essential oil as an eco-friendly alternative to chemical fungicides in citrus production, offering promising solutions for sustainable postharvest disease management (“Budding scientist to exhibit in Bali”, Eikestadnuus, 4 December 2025). “I am very thankful for the awards I have received at Wispo,” Van Niekerk said on his return to SA. “It is very gratifying to be recognised on an international stage for the hard work that I have put into my project over the last two years. The highlights of my trips were certainly the tour of Bali and the networking that took place on the day of judging. “I was truly in awe of the great beauty of the island and the sight of modern buildings standing next to what looked like ancient ruins was unique and breathtaking. Afwyking (artikel 15(2)(b)) om: a) Die toelaatbare dekking te verslap van 50% tot 60% vir die vrystaande erwe, b) Die boulyne (aangrensend aan gedeelte 21) te verslap van 4.5m tot 0.8m op die grondvloer; en (aangrensend aan Gedeelte 50) van 6.0m tot 4.5m op die tweede verdieping om die woonstelblok op Gedeelte 46 te akkommodeer.

Voorbereiding vir 2026- Twee Oseane Stellenbossers wat vanjaar aan die TotalsportsTwee Oseane-marathon (TTOM) deelneem, kan hul voorbereiding vir dié padwedloop-uitdaging versterk deur vir een van ses amptelike oefen-wedlope in te skryf. Organiseerders en vennote van die gewilde marathon sal in die aanloop tot die wedloop, wat in April in die Kaapse Skiereiland aangebied word, drie oefenwedlope in die Wes-Kaap, twee in Gauteng en een in Durban aanbied. Die voorbereiding begin Sondag 25 Januarie in Kaapstad, gevolg deur oefenlopies in Johannesburg (Sondag 1 Februarie), Durban (Sondag 8 Februarie), Kaapstad (Sondag 22 Februarie), Pretoria (Sondag 8 Maart) en Stellenbosch (Sondag 22 Maart). Die oefenwedlope is slegs oop vir diegene wat vir die 2026-weergawe van die marathon ingeskryf is en sal ’n 21-km- en 12- km-roete aanbied. Geen inskrywingsfooi is betaalbaar nie, maar deelname is beperk, dus

sal deelnemers vooraf moet inskryf. “Ons is trots om die amptelike TTOM-oefenwedlope vir 2026 van stapel te stuur – ’n opwindende opbou tot wat belowe om ’n onvergeetlike wedloopjaar te wees,” het Wade Bromfield, hoofbestuurder van die TTOM, gesê. “Ons kondig die datums nou aan sodat deelnemers kan beplan, gemotiveerd bly en hierdie sessies op hul kalenders kan aanteken. “Die spesifieke beginplekke sal later op ons sosialemediakanale bekend gemaak word, aangesien ons nou saam met ons vennoot-atletiekklubs sal werk om die beste plekke te kies. Hierdie wedlope gaan oor energie, gemeenskap en gedeelde passie – die perfekte manier vir die aftelling na die groot wedloopdag!”  Die TTMO-naweek vind van Vrydag 10 tot Sondag 12 April plaas, met die veldwedloop op Vrydag 10 April, die ultra-marathon op Saterdag 11 April en die half-marathon op Sondag 12 April. Die Pniël Villagers-rugbyklub bied die naweek van Saterdag 7 Februarie die eerste Dwarsriviervallei-7’s-toernooi aan en sal ook die legendes deur die jare vir hul bydrae tot rugby in dié gebied vereer. “Die 7’s-toernooi sal bekendstaan as die Rhodes Dwarsriviervallei-7’s en is die eerste van sy soort,” sê Winston Stubbes, die voorsitter van die rugbyklub. “Spanne van Stellenbosch en Pniël sal deelneem en dit word op die [plaaslike] sportterrein gehou. “Die vereering van oudspelers en -administrateurs, ongeag hul

affiliasie in die apartheidsjare, is om hulle te bedank vir hul bydrae tot die ontwikkeling van rugby in die omgewing. “Ons wil erkenning gee vir hul waardes, erfenis, tradisies en suksesse.” Hy sê die inisiatief is daarop gemik om alle rugbyklubs van die breër Dwarsriviervallei saam te bring in ’n fees van gemeenskapsrugby en sportgees. “Ons sien hierdie toernooi as ’n mylpaal vir rugby in die vallei. Dit sal ’n unieke geleentheid wees waar elke klub sy talent kan wys en die gemeenskap bymekaar bring soos nog nooit tevore nie,” sê Stubbs. Die Dwarsriviervallei-7’s-toernooi sal al die rugbyklubs van die vallei insluit – Kyle-

more, Lanquedoc, Simondium, La Motte, Meerlust, Klapmuts, Stellenbosch, Franschhoek en Wemmershoek. Dit sal die eerste keer in die geskiedenis van rugby in die streek wees dat hierdie gemeenskappe saam op dieselfde speelveld meeding. Stubbs benadruk verder dat die inisiatief daarop gemik is om eenheid, trots en sportontwikkeling in die Dwarsriviervallei te bevorder. Die toernooi beloof om ’n jaarlikse hoogtepunt op die plaaslike sportkalender te word. Saddle up for popular Winelands Cycle Race The Rhodes Quality Winelands Cycle Race on Sunday 25 January is approaching and entries are filling up fast. The event combines breathtaking scenery with camaraderie making it a highlight on the cycling calendar. The race will start and finish at Huguenot Primary School in Wellington and will be an excellent race to help riders gear up and improve their seeding for the 2026 Cape Town Cycle Tour (CTCT). There will be two races (102 km and 52 km) under the auspices of the Pedal Power Association, with online registration and seeding by CTCT and timing by Finish Time. The races will start in front of the school in General Hertzog Boulevard. Cyclists can travel on two routes into the rural Riebeek/Paardeberg area. The 102 km race starts at 06:00 (entry fee is R480 and riders aged 16 and 17 pay R430). It is for more experienced riders and will be a seeding race for the CTCT.

The route takes riders through scenic vineyards and wheatfields to Hermon, Riebeek West and back to Wellington via Voor Paardeberg. The 52 km race is not a CTCT seeding event (entry fee R360) and is ideal for the whole family. Cyclists aged 16 and 17 will pay R320. Riders travel to Voor Paardeberg and back to Wellington. At the finish there will be a variety of food and beverage stalls as well as medals, a lucky draw and a bike park. The closing date for online registration is Monday 19 January at 17:00, but late entries will be allowed online until Thursday 22 January and at all number collection points, provided the limit of 2 500 riders has not been reached. The late entry fee for 102 km race is R550 and R430 for 52 km event.
