Students should remain vigilantboth on campus and throughout Stellenbosch town, followinga recent incidentof bicycle theft that occurred in thearea.
Afirst-year female student was cycling to herprivate residence outside Stellenbosch University (SU)campus when an unknown man stoppedher around17:00. According to the student’s father, the man blocked her pathonthe sidewalk and threatenedtostab her unless she handed overher bicycle. This apparently marks the thirdsuchincident in thearea just outside the towncentre within the last six months.
According to Stellenbosch policespokesperson Captain NathalieMartin,high-value items suchasbicycles are frequently stolen by thieves whothen sell themoutsideofStellenbosch. Martinsays robbers typically operate in groups of three or four and threaten their victims withknives, as was the case with the first-yearstudent.
TheSUCampus Security, as per legislation, may only patrol the area that physi-

cally makes up SU property.
However, students who reside outside the official campus areamay still contact Campus Security in case of an emergency, but the type and nature of the emergency will dictate the response, explains SU spokesperson Martin Viljoen. He says studentsalso have the options of informing local police or security partners operating in the areas in question.
"A comprehensive safety andprevention awareness programme remains centralto theuniversity’s approach.SUcontinues to run anextensive campussafety campaign, themed ‘Together foraSAFER campus’, aimed at equipping students and staff with practical knowledge to reduce risk.
“Safetyinformation is shared through posters, residences, faculties, socialmedia andadedicatedcampussafety website.
Awareness programmes are annually expanded with new topics and communication channels,”Viljoen adds.
Many local students, like the first-year student, use bicycles to navigate central Stellenbosch, an area congested with heavy daily traffic.
“As anew student, she shouldn’t have to

spend her university years feeling afraid This could have happened to her sister, also astudent, since they both relyontheir bikes to get to class, andaround town but also to their sport-training session almost everyday,” the student’s father explains.
Martin says Stellenbosch police work closely with local law enforcement and other safety stakeholders. At theweekly Stellenbosch Safety Partnership meeting, planning andfeedback from different role players are discussed. “Out of these meetings, necessary roadblocks, search warrants andstop-and-searchoperations are executed,” she explains.
Students who are victims of crime, be it on campusoroutside, are urged to open official cases with Stellenbosch police as resources are deployedaccording to official crimestatistics. Hotspot areas foropportunistic crime, including robberies, include the following streets: Dorp, Bird,Plein, Andringa, Crozier, Paul Kruger, Dennesig, as well as the EikstadMall parking lot.
Viljoenreminds studentsreturning home thatthey canuse the safety night shuttle, available from 18:00 to 06:00 within a6 km radius of the campus.

New leadership and “renewed stewardship”
This is what former Stellenbosch University (SU)chancellors Johann Rupert andretired judgeEdwardCameron are advocatingfor as theelection of the university’s new council chairperson looms.
“The SU community deserves new and transparentleadership withintegrity. Our sincere hope is that it will receive this,”the pair said The term of the current SU Council chairperson, Dr Nicky Newton-King, runs until Wednesday 1April. Shewas electedthe 14th chair of SU Council in April 2023 andisthe first woman to hold the position in theuniversity’s existence. Anew chair is expected to be elected at thecouncil’s next meetingonMonday 13 April Newton-King, who was first nominated to the council by the Electoral College of Donors, the university’s donorconstituency, has apparentlyindicatedthat

The panel found that she knew her actionswere wrong andthatshe obtained these changes through process that was“fatally flawed”.

Meneer April is legendaries.
Kerse is aangesteek ternagedagtenisaan diegene.

What happens to thegifted violinist who becomes alawyer? The flautistwho becomes adoctor? For conductor Reghardt Kühn this question sparkedthe creation of something revolutionaryinSouth Africa’s musical landscape–the WinelandsPhilharmonic Orchestra(WPO), foundedin May2022.
“We have extraordinary musical talent in this country,” Kühn explained. “School orchestras, youth orchestras, university programmes produce passionate, capable musicians. But once people leave that structured environment the opportunities shrink dramatically.”
The idea emerged when orchestra member Izelle Theunissen approached him with a compellingargument: non-professionalmusiciansneeded a permanentorchestra with high standards. Kühn’s musical journeybegan in Empangeni, KwaZulu-Natal, where he joined one of the country’s last remaining cadet marching bands.
After touring with the KZN Youth OrchestratoStellenbosch’s International Chamber Music Festival during his matric year, he knew music would define his life.
Kühn completed degreesin composition, orchestration and orchestral conducting at Stellen

bosch University (SU), where he met hiswife,a medicaldoctor and percussionist, who now plays inthe WPO.
UNIQUECOMMUNITYMODEL
TheWPO operates on the principle of integrationrather than exclusion. “Wecreate a sharedstandard andwork towardsittogether,”Kühnnoted.
Professionalmusicians mentor sections where needed, but ego doesn’t dominate the space.
Theresultisa collaborative culture where members from
different professions, ages and backgrounds unite every Thursdayevening.
“Most towns in Europe have some form of community ensemblethateveryone rallies around,” Kühnsaid. “We aim to serve localchoirs, schools and community groups thatwould otherwise never have access to afull symphony orchestra.”
Thediversity bringsunexpected rewards. Kühnfinds deep satisfactioninconducting a professional musicianalongside auniversity student, medical
specialist andsomeone returning to musicafteryears away.
“Youmustpushthe orchestrato its limits, butknowwhere that limit is,”heexplained.
NURTURINGFUTUREGENERATIONS
Youthdevelopmentforms a crucialpartofWPO’s vision. It haspresented dedicated emerging artists concerts andcollaboratedwithgroupslike Muzukidz andyouth ensemblesfrom Stanford. Youngmusiciansgain invaluable orchestral experience whilelearningdiscipline and professionalism from seasoned players.
The collaboration with the recentlyre-establishedStellenbosch Youth Orchestra (SYO) exemplifies this commitment.
“Youcan’t have aphilharmonic orchestra withoutthose members first startinginstrumental lessonsasyoungsters,”Kühn emphasised.“Youcan’t have Springbok rugby without bulletjie rugby first.”
Success isn’tmeasuredin accoladesbut in community impact. When concerts sell out, musicians travel longdistances to participate andstudents step into leadership roles, the model provesits worth. Theorchestra is woveninto the cultural fabric of the Winelands, withKühn hoping people will support it “just like their local rugby team.”

Thecoffee break during threehour rehearsalsplays asurprisingly crucialrole. “It’s here wherecommunity is developed andnurtured,” Kühn reflects. “People catch up with orchestra friends, ventabout workand sharejoy. Everyone goes home with heads abit lighter and hearts abit fuller.”
Theupcoming ClassicalKaleidoscope concertatthe Stellenbosch Town Hall on Saturday 21 Marchat18:00 showcases this community spirit, featuring soprano Marina Erasmus anda programmespanningBerlioz to musical theatre. TheSYO will openthe programme, demonstrating the pipeline from young musicians to seasoned community players Kühn’sadvicefor other communities considering similar initiatives is simple: “Start small. Grow organically. Be patient. Most importantly, know whyyou aredoing things; if you knowyourwhy it’s easier for people to follow andsupport you.”
TheWPO provesthatprofessional excellence andcommunity inclusion aren’t mutually exclusive –they’re mutually enriching. Formoreinformation on Classical Kaleidoscope andonlinetickets can be boughtthrough Webtickets.

In 1998 wordGaino Segers voltyds as administratiewe beampteby Stellemploy aangestel.
Stellemploy kry’nopleidingsentrum
Die eerste elektriesevaardigheidsprogram is in die Ou Lückhoff Skool aangebied, waarna Stellemploy dieStellenbosch Munisipaliteit viropleidingspasie nader. Hullestel toe Beltana virons beskikbaarvir verdereambagsopleiding.

Vanaf 2011 kon ons egter as ’n satellietkampus van ICA(Institute of CulinaryArts) ’n volledige sjefkursus aanbied VerderisStellemploy as ’n sjefskool by Highfield Qualifications geregistreer.
