Awave of house robberies has hit the Cape Winelands,and for one Faure woman thenightmarestruck twice

On Thursday 16 April, around 21:15, AntheaMyburgh walked out onto the frontstoep of her home on afamily farm in Faure and wasmet by four men emerging fromthe dark. Theywere dressed in dark clothing, gloves and balaclavas.

“They asked for money and Itold them Ididn’t have any,” she recalled.“Iran through my options, weighing up whether Icould get back into myhouse,but I realised Iwouldn’t be able to closemy door and hold four grown men back.”

Armed with agolf club and alog,the men turnedonher butthe 52-year-old stood her ground

“I was holding aTupperware bowl and wallopedthem with it. Itold themto leave me alone andgo. The wholeferal side of me took over.”

Myburgh was struck across the face with the log and her eardrum burst when she was struck by the golfclub. A front tooth was also knocked out.

Three men held her downwhile the fourth ransacked her home.

She believes thesame attackers returned two weeks later, on Saturday 2 May, around the same time. This time Myburgh’s 85-year-old mother, who lives in another home on the farm, was targeted.

The elderly woman had let herdogs out for aquick run when foursimilarly dressed men confronted her.

But she didn’t fight back like her daughter.

The group bound her with acord,

elbowedher in the ribsand used dishwashingliquid to pull the ringsoff her fingers.All her jewellery, including irreplaceableheirloom pieces, wasstolen.

The suspects used tools found in the house to break openchests before stripping the room of its valuables.

Once therobbersleft, the elderlyvictim pressedthe panic button to alertauthorities. VetusSchola rapidlyresponded to both incidents, with management attending both scenes.

“Theexperience hastaintedthe farm formymother, having lived there for 60 years;for the firsttime she feels unsafe,” afamily member said.

Myburghadded:“Whenithappenedto me Ithanked Goditwasn’t my mother. Thattheygot to her hasn’t satwell with me.”

Myburghhas heard of more robberiesin the areaover the past couple of months. “Every incident in this area, fromRaithby to Bonniemile, hassimilarities,” shesaid.

Somerset West police confirmed they were investigating cases of house robbery in connection withboth Faure incidents.

Police spokesperson Warrant OfficerSuzan Jantjies confirmed thatthey believea crime syndicate is operating in theRaithbyarea.

Myburgh’sordeal formspartofa broaderwave of house robberiesacross the Boland andHelderberg since late May.

On Wednesday 27 May four armed men in balaclavastied amother, father anddaughter up at the Dutch reformed church rectory in Stellenboschkloof Road, Stellenbosch, before fleeing with cellphones,laptops andjewellery.

Twodays later, on Friday29May,

the wave reached the Helderberg when four balaclava-cladmen held-up acouple at the Rust en Vrede Farm in Raithby, forcing them inside, tying the husband up andfleeing with atablet, cellphones, jewellery, cash andvehicle keys (“Concern after hit by armed robbers”, Eikestadnuus,4June).

On Tuesday2June fivearmed men held-up afamilyonafarm near Ridgeback Wine Estate in Agter-Paarl for around 25 minutes before fleeing with cellphones, laptops andvehiclekeys.

Thefollowing evening armed men raided ahomeinBonniemile Drive, Stellenbosch tying the victims up before ransacking the home.

On Friday5June at 19:30, the pattern wasrevisited in Raithby, wheresuspects gained access to afarmhouse on Winery Road througha window. When the residents arrived homeand confrontedthe burglars, oneofthem was attacked with aknife andsuffered astab wound to the right arm.

A20-year-old suspect wasarrested in connection with the incident that evening

In the latest incident, SomersetWest police areinvestigating acaseofhouse robbery after fiveunknown men, also wearing balaclavas, held up avictim at his home on afarm in Raithby before 19:00 last Friday (19 June)

Jantjies said the victim was tied up andthe suspects fled with cellphones, jewellery andother valuables.

She declined to comment on whether the most recent incident in Raithbyis linked to casesinother policing precincts.

Successful team rescue

A60-year-old hiker was rescued after falling about 40 mfrom theSecond Waterfall hiking trail in theJonkershoek Nature Reserve last Thursday (18 June).

According to Wilderness Search And Rescue (WSAR) thehiker was part of a group on thepopular trail when he reportedly stepped awkwardly, slipped and fell down steep terrain.

His companions immediately moved to an area where they could obtain cellular signal and alerted rescuers via theemergency number.

Asmall rescue team, including aprovincial EMS paramedic, was flowntothe scene to assess and stabilise theinjured man.

At thesame time, additional WSAR rescuers, accompanied by aCapeNature party, hiked to thearea carrying specialised technical rescue equipment and astretcher. Technical rescue teams established arope system to safely access thepatient.

After treatment on scene, thehiker was secured on thestretcher, hauled up to the trail and carefully carried to asuitable location, from where arescue helicopter could safely completeahoist evacuation.

At anearby landing zone, theman was transferred to awaiting ambulance that transported him to hospital for further treatment

The complex rescue operation concluded shortly before 17:30, around six-and-a-half hours after theinitial emergency call.

“We extend our gratitude to everyone who gave their time, energy and expertise to help bring an injured hiker to safety. Their willingness to leavework,family and personal commitmentstoassist others reflects thevery best of theoutdoor and rescue community,” theWSAR team said in astatement

Die Wes-Kaapse departement van landbou, ekonomiese ontwikkeling en toerisme het verledeDonderdag (18 Junie) ’n uitbreking van bek-en-klouseer in Stellenbosch bevestig.

Die uitbreking het volgens die departement onder ’n trop vee van ’n plaaslike veeboer in die omgewing van Khayamandi ontstaan.

“Die uitbreking is op die kommersiële plaas, wat 30 beeste noordvan die Papegaaiberg-natuurreservaat aanhou,” het Mary James, ’n woordvoerder vandie departement, verduidelik.

Sy het bygevoeg dat alle groepe nuwe diere watingebring is en alle ander potensiële bewegings na die plaasondersoek word om die moontlike bron te bepaal.

Boere van Khayamandi gebruik reedsjare lank die plaaslike natuurreservaatasweiding vir bokke en beeste.

Hierdie gebruik het talle inwoners van die nabye Onder-Papegaaiberg-buurt ontstel, aangesien vee gereeld deur die natuurreservaat tot in dié woonbuurt beweeg.

Close to 20 years of penning her life story has come to fruition for Stellenbosch para-cyclist Toni Mould.

The 42-year-old launched her autobiography, Breaking the Mould,atDie Stal at Coetzenburg in Stellenbosch at the end of May –amilestone achievement for the Simonsrust resident.

The book, which is co-authored by Nicky de Beer, is self-published –atrue heart project that “needed the right team at the right time”to bring it to fulfilment.

“The book has always beenin my mind. Iknew Iwasn’t living an ‘ordinarylife’ and my story, when eventually told, would bring hope and awareness to those reading it,” Mould says.

“It tells my story from my birth throughout my school and varsity years, and into adulthood as a person with adisability. It also follows my sportsjourney through the highs and lows, from its surprising start to the ultimatesports festival –the Paralympics.”

TRUETOTHETITLE

Mould, originally from Plettenberg Bay, was diagnosed with severe cerebral palsy as aresultof alack of oxygen at birth. It affects her speech, balance, coordination and muscle movements, and also causes chronic fatigue and pain among others, making everyday activitieslike dressing, eating and moving around challenging.

But this has not stopped her

from livingher life to the fullest.

Mould movedtothe Cape Winelands tostudysocial work at Stellenbosch University in 2004. Shetook up cycling in 2014. “The title [of the book] is both aplay on my surname and agood description of my life,” Mould relates. “I have broken most ideasor moulds that manywouldhave put on my life by doing things people would not have expected me to do or by exceeding expectations.”

She metDeBeer throughher previous co-authorLourieke Haller. “We needed someone with more timetowork on the book,” Mould explains. “Nicky is agreat writer andhas ason with disabilities.”

De Beer adds: “By the timewe were halfway through our first meeting,myheart wasalready in project. The volume of notes, journalentries and blogexcerpts was

initially overwhelming –decades of memoriesand experiences waiting to be crafted into astory that would do justice to Toni’s incredible courage and determination, andthe many challenges shehas overcome.”

What’s more, working on the manuscriptshifted De Beer’s view of her son’s challenges.“It made me realise how much morestill needs to be done beforewecan consider ourselves an inclusive society and strengthened my faith in unimaginable ways.”

Breaking theMould will appeal to avastreadership,Mould points out, as it can bringhope andencouragement to individuals touched by disability, while the sporting and overcoming-the-odds elements will draw others “There’s alsoajourney of faith, healing,finding your passionand community, as well as forging a pathfor yourself despite having the odds stacked againstyou,” she relates.

Thewriting processsaw Mould sending her “chapters” to De Beer, who in turn“recrafted” her work to the final product. Thedetermined cyclist is quick to point out thatthe processhad its challenges, oneofthem being her “slow and tiresome” typing speed.

“It alsotook acouple of years to find the right team to help complete the project. Recountingalife thathas had many tough and good times wasn’talways easy, as you almost relive thosetimes as you write,”she says

“Nicky is also afull-time carer for her son, so shehad to work before he woke up or after he went to bed at night.”

Thepairstarted the writing journey in Februarylast year,and received the completed manuscript from their editor thisJanuary. After the launch event, Mould hopes to hostfuturegatherings to market Breaking theMould,but as it is self-published shehopes more doorswillopen for her to get the necessary exposure.

While sheisusingthe book’s Facebook page to sell it at present, online sales are in the pipeline while shealsohopes bookstores will be willing to stock the read.

FUTUREAWAITS

As the off-season and winter is in full swing, Mould aims to slow down, workonher general health and fitness, and hop in the saddle for fun rides with her friends “Around October, hard training for next year’s racing season will start, if Ihave the team and sponsors to do so,” she says. And what’s next for Toni Mould the author?

“She has some hard work ahead of her,marketing and selling the book! Ididn’twrite it to sitinmy house, so promoting and getting the book in as many hands as possible is my mission. Thereare rumoursofasecond book, but we’ll have to seehow book one sells first.”

This is the question various local artists sought to answer through their work for the inaugural Artof Origin Stellenbosch art competition and exhibition. VisitStellenbosch, in partnership withArt Association Stellenbosch, issued an open calltoartiststointerpret Stellenbosch on theircanvases.

The organisers said they were overwhelmed withthe response in artwork, from various age groups andexperience levels. Artists enteredmorethan 90 artworks across three age divisions–seven to 18 years, 19 to 65 years,and 66 years and older –for each of the thematic categories.The winners of the StellenboschArt Association wasannounced on Thursday(18 June) at thePJOlivier ArtCentre.

Annemie Liebenberg,CEO of Visit Stellenbosch,said the eventwas more than merely announcing winners; it celebrated creativity, community and the extraordinary people that makesStellenboscha world-class destination

“We wanted to create somethingthat hasnever been done in Stellenbosch. Aplatform where the entire creative ecosystem could come togetherand tell one collective story,”she explained“A place where every generation, every communityand every artist would have avoice.”
