ARaithby couple’sterrifying encounter with four armed men has shed light on aseriesofhouse robberies thathave left the greater Stellenbosch community on edge,while local police are urging residentsnot to spread unverified informationon social media.

The couple were enjoying abraai in front of their home on Rust en Vrede Farmalong the R44when four men wearing balaclavasand gloves approached them around 19:15 on Friday 29 May

Armed with acrowbar, hand-made rifle, firearm and pepperspray, the suspects forced the couple inside their home and tied the manupin the bedroom while demanding money and valuables.

In abid to get out unscathed, the womancooperated with the robbers, helping them search the room for cash, jewellery and other valuables. Thesuspects fled with atablet,three cellphones, jewellery, cash, and the keystoboth the couple’s homeand their Amarok vehicle.

Once the men had gone, thewoman managed to activate apanic button, prompting security services and police to respond. Both victims were physically unharmed.

In asocial media post that has since drawnwidespread attention, the woman revealed that they were not isolated victims. “I am sure, just likemyhusband and I, everyone in and around Stellenboschand Somer-

set West is unaware that the robberies have been going on for the past twoweeks, with the same group of robbers. My husband and Iwerethe ninth victims in the lasttwo weeks," she wrote.

Stellenbosch police confirmed on Monday1June, that acaseofhouse robbery is under investigation.

PolicespokespersonCaptain NathalieMartinalsoconfirmed asimilar incident on Wednesday 27 May,at the VGKChurch House on Stellenboschkloof Road around 20:30.

In that case, fourbalaclava-clad men, carrying whatappeared to be the same weapons, entered acomplainant’shome, tied up the occupants in the lounge and fled with12 cellphones, twolaptops, jewellery and awallet containing bank cards. The victims were unharmed and no arrestshave been madeineither case

While the community’s alarmis understandable, Martin has urged residentstoexercise cautionbefore sharing information.

“The spreading of false or misleading information can create unnecessary fear and panic, undermine public confidence and divert valuable policeresources from legitimate crime prevention and investigation activities,” she said,adding thatall reported incidents are being thoroughly investigated

Residents are encouraged to report suspiciousactivity directlytotheir nearest police station or through official police communication channels.

‘Fed-up’locals demand closures

As theseven-day deadline looms for theorganisation March andMarch’s demand to close foreign-owned spaza shops in Lwandleand Nomzamo, business continuesasusual in the townships.

This follows protest action from residents on Friday 29 May, whoaccompanied the civic organisation from Hlathi Drive in Zola,Nomzamo, beforeturning into SolomonStreet andproceeding down Michael Street. Anti-immigrant chants filled the air as they crossed Onverwacht Road into Lwandle andup Noxolo Street toward the policestation

Theprotestors handed overamemorandum to Lwandle police, whichincluded ademandfor allforeign-owned spaza shops to close within seven days.

During the march, Abigail Nandiloha Matolong, oneofthe organisers, said communities areoverwhelmedbyforeign nationals flooding the streets with drugs. Matolong,who is from Summer GreensnearMilnerton, became involved withMarchand March through TikTok.

Spearheaded by Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma, March andMarchisacivicorganisation thatemerged in KwaZulu-Natal andhas since spread to Gauteng andthe Western Cape. It condemnsundocumented immigration, calling for“illegal” foreigners to leave andthe government to tighten migrationpolicies.

Matolongattributes the movement’s

rise to the failure of major political parties to protectcitizens.

Twodecades of service

TheHelderberg Sunrise Rotary Club will celebratea significant milestone this weekend:two decades of service to theHelderberg community and beyond Chartered on 6June 2006, the club marks its 20th birthday on Saturday 6June, withmany of its originalcharter members still actively involved in operations.

Overthe years, theclub has built alegacy of community-driven projects, witheducation at the heart of its mission. Along-standing focus on literacy and numeracy has seen theclub supply supplementary learning materials to schools in disadvantaged areas, delivering measurable improvements in learner outcomes.

Recognising theneed for sustainable, cost-effectivesolutions, the club has installed computer rooms in schoolsinMacassar, givinglearners access to online learning programmes.

Theresultshavebeen remarkable;Oklahoma Primary School principal, Joanne Apollis, recently praised theinitiative, reporting an average improvement of 20% in learners’ maths results following systemic testing. “The learners are accessing valuable additional learning programmes,” said Apollis, who also commended the club for its continued and committedsupport of theschool.

Beyond education, theclub haspartnered withlocal organisations in early childhood development and has planted food gardens to tackle food insecurity. In afurther demonstration of its community reach, Helderberg Sunrise donated astate-of-the-art

portable sonar scanning machine to Helderberg Hospital’semergency facility, completewith staff training.

The club’s annual support of theWine2Whales MTB race remains its flagship fundraising event,transporting participants’ vehicles over nine daysofracing while also partnering withcharitiestogenerateadditional income for those organisations.

Youth development is another cornerstone its work.Interact clubs are activeatfour local high schools, with learners sponsored annually to attend Rotary YouthLeadership camps in Franschhoek.The club also participates in theRotary Youth Exchange Programme, witha student currentlyonexchange in France.

The “Go ForGold” initiative further underscores theclub’s commitment to youth, mentoring studentsfrom disadvantaged backgrounds withstrong maths and science results towardsbursaries in civil engineering.

Residentsofthe Helderberg will soon spot club members in their signature green golf shirtsatlocal shopping centres, promoting the annual Winter Blanket Drive.

An application of the recent ruling by the Western Cape High Courtinrelation to the City’s 2025/26 Approved Budget has causedthe City to makethe following proposed amendments to the 2026/27 March Tabled Budget, subjecttoasupplementarypublic participation process

The amendments areasfollows:

City-wide Cleaning

In the 2026/27 March Tabled Budget, City-wide area cleansing services were funded by a City-wide Cleaning tariff(applicable to residentialproperties and vacant land),aswell as a contribution from the Rates account, supported by acontribution from electricity commercial sales.Following areviewofthis Order to give effecttothe courtjudgment, City-wide Cleaning for residential properties and vacantland willnolongerberecovered by means of atariff but insteadfunded through property rates.

•The reliance on Electricity contributions to Property Rates for City-wide Cleaning services provided to commercial customers willbephasedout.

•The funding requirement for City-wideCleaning (R869 million), including aprovision for debt impairment, has been redistributed across all property rating categories;

This results in an additionalR200 millionincrease in Property Rates for commercial type property rating categories,with acorresponding reductioninthe per-unit price increase for electricity purchasesfor commercial customers.A provisionfor debt impairment has been included in Property Rates; and

In addition, to mitigate the impact of the implementation of the above, and providerelief where most needed, the Residential Property Rates reduction has been increasedtoR620,000 (including the statutory reduction), up from R500,000 in the 2026/27March Tabled Budget.

Further,toaccommodate the phasing out of the electricity contributionfor commercial properties (above), the Property Rates Rate in the Rand and the Property Rates Ratio have been amendedasfollows:

Thereduction in the overall valueoffixedbasic chargesislargely driven by theCity’seffortto mitigate the impact on lower- andmiddle-incomeproperties, achieved by consolidating the fixed tarifffor all metersizesupto22mm, and by increasingthe consumption charge for highconsumption consumers.Consequently, therevised fixed chargesare reflected in thetable below:

When we think of bacteria and fungi, our minds often jump straight to disease,rot or spoiled food.

But beneath our feet in the Western Cape, an invisible, microscopic universe is quietly keeping ourentire ecosystem alive.

To help localsunderstand this hidden world,the Helderberg Nature Reservewillhost afascinatingtalk at 18:30on Thursday 18 June. The presentation, titled “The Living Soil: Why Microbes Matter”, will be delivered by Prof Karin Jacobs, aleading expert in microbial ecologyfrom Stellenbosch University.

The talk comes on the heels of groundbreaking local research. Jacobs recently co-authored apioneering studymapping out theso-called hidden partners of our regional soils.

Shespecifically examined a highly dominant butmysteriousphylum ofbacteria known as Acidobacteriota. By collectingsoil samples from nearby conservation areas like theJonkershoek and Kogelberg nature reserves,the research team discovered that our nativefynbos soilshold massive amounts of unclassified, completelyunique microbial life. In someareas,up to 19% of these vitalbacteria belong to entirely unknown strains found nowhere else on Earth
