wo Helderberg police stations rank among South Africa’s top 30 for drug-related crime and commercial crime respectively, according to the latest quarterly crime statistics.

The figures rank the top 30 stations out of 1 174 nationally for each crime category recorded between April and June. Somerset West makes the most appearances among the Helderberg stations, featuring across 13 crime categories, but Lwandle’s rankings are more concentrated on violent crime, Strand leads the basin for drug-related crime, while Macassar has entered the provincial top 30 for rape. Somerset West ranks eighth in the Western Cape and 41st nationally for other serious crimes, with 396 cases, a category driven by commercial crime, where 205 cases landed the precinct on number 3 in the province and 28th in SA. The precinct’s 39 shoplifting cases ranked it 14th provincially, and a further 152 cases of all theft not mentioned elsewhere placed it 25th. In contact crime Somerset West ranked 14th in the province for house robbery, with nine cases and 20th for trio crimes (combined category of carjacking, house robbery and business robbery) with 13 cases. Property-related crime totalled 132 cases, ranking the station 30th in the province. This included 55 cases of residential burglary, placing it 21st, and 15 cases of

non-residential burglary, ranking 22nd. A further 16 cases of motor vehicle and motorcycle theft were recorded. For crimes dependent on police action Somerset West officers registered 37 cases of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, ranking the station 20th in the province. VIOLENCE IN LWANDLE In other offences, a single case of public violence ranked the precinct 29th in the province, while nine cases of culpable homicide placed Somerset West first in the Western Cape and 29th nationally. Somerset West appears most across crime categories, while Lwandle appears less often, but is more concentrated on violent crime. The station’s 284 contact crime cases ranked it 28th in the province, driven by 21 murders placing it at 18th, 53 cases of assault with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm (assault GBH) at 27th, and 73 cases of robbery with aggravating circumstances at 20th. For robberies Lwandle ranked sixth in the province for house robbery, with 15 cases, and 14th for trio crimes, with 19 cases. It also ranked 17th for sexual offences with 26 cases, comprising 19 cases of rape, six cases of sexual assault and one case of contact sexual offences. Lwandle Community Police Forum chair Chwayita Bhuqa said the stats indicate how the area has changed from a rural community to an urban one with social ills. Continues on page 2

From page 1 “It’s painful, but I believe the problem lies with alcohol and what comes with it,” said Bhuqa. Like Somerset West, Lwandle officers feature among crimes dependent on police action, with 49 cases of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs ranking the station 14th in the province. Macassar’s crime profile has shifted notably in a single quarter. The station’s rape count of 13 cases has landed it in the provincial top 30, at 28th, having not appeared on the list in the final quarter of the 2025-’26 financial year. Other statistics show Macassar ranks 26th in the Western Cape for assault GBH, with 54 cases, and 21st for business robbery with three cases. The station is also ranked 18th in the province for contact-related crime, with 85 cases, comprising two arsons and 83 cases of malicious damage to property. Macassar finds itself in the provincial top 30 for burglary at residential premises, at 24th with 52 cases and for crimen injuria 26th, with 21 cases. The Strand precinct ranks highest in the Helderberg for crimes dependent on police action, at 17th in the province and 18th in the country. This is largely

driven by drug-related crime, where 495 cases account for all but 13 of the precinct’s total in the category. Strand CPF chairperson Lillian Albertyn said this is down to the precinct having a problem with drug houses, and while the numbers are impressive “there is always room for improvement”. She called on police to be even more productive when it comes to drug-related crime. Strand also features in the provincial top 30 for other crime categories, ranking 30th for common assault with 107 cases and 24th for arson with two cases. The precinct ranks higher than Somerset West for property-related crime at 28th with 135 cases, a significant improvement from eighth in the previous quarter, partly driven by theft from motor vehicle dropping to 71 cases, which ranks the station 18th in the province. As for the other serious crime category, Strand ranks 27th with 240 cases, including 104 of commercial crime ranking the station 16th in the province. The final station, Gordon’s Bay, barely registers in the stats, but its single appearance is at 13th place in the province for culpable homicide, with four registered cases.

Crime in brief

According to reports police were contacted by the control room about the incident near a service station. Circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation. No arrest has been made and investigations continue. Anyone who may have information that could assist either investigation is urged to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the mobile application MySAPS. Information may be provided anonymously. A male suspect was apprehended for possession of drugs in Acorn Creek, Macassar, at 13:30 on Sunday (20 September), as part of a Tactical Response Team operation targeting gang-affiliated activities. He will make his first court appearance at Somerset Magistrates’ Court once he has been charged.

Two pedestrians were killed in separate road incidents in the Helderberg last Thursday (17 September). Strand police registered a culpable-homicide case following an incident in Main Road at 09:05, in which a 32-year-old man was struck by a vehicle. The pedestrian was fatally injured and succumbed to his injuries. No arrest has been made and the investigation continues. Later that evening Macassar police registered a culpable homicide case after an unidentified man was fatally injured on the N2 near the Macassar bridge, in the direction of Cape Town, at 20:10.

Balaclava-wearing robbers strike again Barend Williams Three house robberies in Gordon’s Bay have pushed the known total of balaclava-clad robberies on farms in the Helderberg to at least eight since April, with at least six similar attacks reported in the Cape Winelands region. The most recent Gordon’s Bay incident occurred at a home in Clearwater Road, Firlands around 20:15 on Thursday 10 September. Provincial police confirmed four unknown men entered the residence and tied the victims up before locking them in the bathroom and taking their personal belongings. The suspects’ faces were covered with balaclavas. The incident took place just three weeks after two other incidents that happened within two days of each other. Provincial police confirmed the first robbery occurred at a guesthouse in Watermill Road on Thursday 20 August, while the second followed two days later at a home in Mountain Stream Road on Saturday 22 August. In both incidents, four unknown men wearing balaclavas and gloves robbed the victims. In all three Gordon’s Bay incidents, no arrests have been made and investigations are ongoing. The Gordon’s Bay robberies brought the Helderberg tally to eight, following five earlier incidents. On Thursday 16 April four men in balaclavas attacked Anthea Myburgh (52) at her Faure farm home, bursting her ear-

drum and knocking out a tooth. Two weeks later the same attackers allegedly returned, targeting Myburgh’s mother (85), using dishwashing liquid to remove her rings before stealing all her jewellery (“Robbers on a rampage,” DistrictMail & Helderberg Gazette, 24 June). Between 29 May and 19 June three more incidents occurred in Raithby. In one, suspects stabbed a resident when confronted and a 20-year-old was arrested. In the others, balaclava-clad men tied up victims before fleeing with valuables. At the time, Somerset West police spokesperson Warrant Officer Suzan Jantjies confirmed a crime syndicate is operating in the Raithby area. Last week, she said there had been no other house robberies on farms involving men with face coverings in the precinct after increased patrols by officers and volunteers. Meanwhile, a Grabouw couple were tied up by armed suspects who had broken into their home on Saturday night (19 September). They made off with jewellery, cellphones, an iPod and a firearm. The victims were woken by the sound of their bathroom window being opened, which is how the suspects entered. Reports say the attack took place at the farm Vyeboom. Police confirmed the suspects were armed with knives and a crowbar. Stellenbosch farms have also been hit over the last couple of months, including the attack of a couple in the home in the Koelenhof Valley on Friday 4 September around 21:45. Three balaclava-clad men armed with pangas and knives overpowered the couple in their home, fleeing with laptops, cellphones and an airgun. A couple of Klapmuts were also targeted in their home on the Damarakloof Protea Road in the early hours on Sunday 6 September at 02:15. Between 27 May and 10 June six incidents occurred in Stellenbosch and Paarl. In two cases in Onder-Papegaaiberg, victims were tied up, their homes searched for valuables and one was forced to make an electronic transfer.

Snakes are coming alive Yaseen Gaffar With warmer days arriving slightly later than usual across the Western Cape, locals are urged to prepare for a surge in snake activity. Long-range weather forecasts point toward what could be one of the hottest summers in over six decades, creating conditions that draw reptiles out of winter shelter in search of food, water and thermoregulation. Blackie Swart, founder of Blackie Swart Snake Relocations, urges residents of Somerset West, Strand, Gordon’s Bay and Raithby to remain vigilant as temperatures climb. “It is that time of year again, a little later than usual, but the warmer days are approaching, meaning snakes will also be more active,” Swart warns. “We are also apparently facing the hottest summer in 60plus years, which will naturally see more movement.” Relocation efforts in the Helderberg basin remain busy year-round, with high numbers recorded during peak summer months. “Last season (2025-’26), I removed 286 snakes in total,” Swart notes. “All of them were safely relocated back into nature, well away from human habitation.” WHAT TO DO WHEN SPOTTING A SNAKE Swart emphasises that encountering a snake does not have to result in harm to humans, pets or the reptile itself. “When a snake is spotted or found inside your house or on your property, keep pets and children away immediately,” he advises. “Keep eyes on it from a safe distance – two to three metres is perfect – and call

your local snake catcher to remove it. Do not kill it and do not try to catch it yourself.” He also reminds the public to ensure their chosen handler is properly accredited and transparent about costs. “Make sure your snake catcher is in possession of a valid CapeNature catchand-release permit,” Swart adds. “Snake catchers are not funded by government, so please check with your handler whether or not there are any callout fees involved prior to them coming out to assist.” ANTIVENOM SHORTAGE Addressing concerns over venomous bites, Swart highlights the importance of rapid medical intervention, particularly amid current supply constraints.

“There is an antivenom shortage at the moment, but nevertheless, stock may be available at hospitals and vets,” says Swart. “The important thing is to get to a hospital as soon as possible, where you will be stabilised and treated as per your symptoms. The same goes if your dog is bitten – get to a vet as soon as possible." The Helderberg is home to several venomous species, including the puff adder, Cape cobra, boomslang, rinkhals and berg adder. Medical professionals are trained to treat venomous bites symptomatologically even when specific antivenom supplies are restricted. STAYING SAFE Reiterating key preventative advice, Swart points out that homeowners can take simple proactive steps to make their

yards less inviting. “Snakes need three things: food, water and shelter,” he explains. :By managing these three things, you can significantly reduce the chances of a snake visiting your home.” • Food sources: Keep grass cut and properties tidy to prevent rodents, which are a primary food source for snakes. Avoid leaving leftover food outside for birds, as this also attracts rodents. • Water sources: Fix leaking outdoor taps and water outlets to prevent pooling. Secure open water tanks, bird baths and place pet water bowls thoughtfully. • Shelter: Clear building rubble, discarded tyres and overgrown brush. During extreme heat, snakes may seek cooler refuge indoors, so keep exterior doors closed and consider placing a rolled-up towel at the base of doors to block entry gaps. Armed robbers hit Grabouw shop Four armed balaclava-clad men stormed into a Grabouw supermarket at closing time last Wednesday (16 September). The suspects shot a security guard before fleeing with cash registers and cigarettes. Grabouw police registered a business robbery case following the incident, which took place in Dzhivhuho Street at 18:24. Provincial police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said the incident occurred as the security guard was closing the door. “The suspects shot at the guard, who sustained a gunshot wound to his left hand. They

then took three cash registers filled with an undisclosed amount of cash and cigarettes, and fled the scene in an unknown direction.” The wounded security guard was taken to a nearby medical facility, but the extent of his injuries was not been disclosed at the time of print. Van Wyk confirmed investigations are continuing and no arrests have been made. Anyone with information on the incident is requested to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or anonymously report ir via the MySAPS mobile application.

Infant rescued in SW Jamey Gordon A newborn baby boy was found alive in the bathroom of a Somerset West shopping centre on Monday afternoon (21 September), leading to the arrest of a young woman on a charge of concealment of birth. According to a police report members were alerted to the incident just after 14:00. “A passerby heard soft sounds, like a cat, and informed security. On further investigation it was found that a newborn baby, still alive, was discovered in a bin in the toilet. Authorities were alerted and the baby was taken to hospital for medical attention.” Police confirmed a 25-year-old woman was arrested in connection with the case. A first responder with the Helderberg Baby Saver, Sophia Warner, attended the scene along with a colleague. She recalled the baby being taken a pharmacy in the centre, where pharmacy nurses held and cared for him. “I activated the emergency protocol from the location and Secure Rite Security and GB Med Rescue was activated. The

paramedics came to the pharmacy and the very premature baby was transported to hospital, where I believe the infant is stable.” Emergency personnel on the scene confirmed the baby boy was very premature and his umbilical cord was still attached. An enquiry to establish the baby’s admission and condition was sent to Abulele Dyasi, communications officer at the provincial Department of Health and Wellness, but no response had been received at the time of going to print on Tuesday morning (22 September). Warner described the incident as an awful situation, one that calls on deep levels of sensitivity, par-

ticularly in relation to the mother, who felt she had to make a difficult decision. The one positive, she noted, was the outpouring of love, from the person who found the baby to the security staff, centre employees and emergency personnel who rallied together. The Helderberg Baby Saver, a built-in safe in the side wall of the Choices Crisis Pregnancy Centre in Schapenberg Road, offers a last port of call for help and hope, enabling the safe and anonymous relinquishment of an unwanted baby. When a baby is placed in the safe, an alarm is triggered and appointed respondents, including security officers and emergency personnel, collect the infant. The response is linked to child protection organisation Wandisa, which sees to the statutory processes. The saver is available around-the-clock, every day, has no cameras and is safe to use anonymously. The Saver has given just under 20 babies a second chance at life since launching in 2014 and emphasises the importance of safe relinquishment over abandonment. Could ‘eyesore’ get a new lease? Jamey Gordon A fresh start could be on the cards for the derelict house in Jubilee Crescent, Somerset West – a property that has long been a community eyesore. The national Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI) has indicated it intends to dispose of the property should no other state department lay claim to it. In a written response to an enquiry following recent complaints and a renewed call for action to rid the community of the problem building DPWI said: “Should no interest be received from other state departments for its use, the property will be offered for disposal via public auction, on which the successful tenderer will be responsible for the property going forward.” DistrictMail & Helderberg Gazette has reported on the property on various occasions, including in October 2017, when the City of Cape Town confirmed it had begun the process to declare it a problem building. In February 2019, the Problem Building Unit formally did so and issued a contravention notice to the DPWI, the registered owner. Wayne Dyason, spokesperson for municipal Law Enforcement, confirmed the process was concluded in 2023 and the contravention notice no longer applied. “The DPWI had responded to the notice by committing to maintain the property and placing 24-hour security on site.” A resident turned to the newspaper in

frustration, lamenting a more-than-a-decade-long state of disrepair. He claimed he had complained more than once and logged the matter on the City’s website, but to no avail. Residents still had to pay full rates while the eyesore persisted, he said. If costs can be incurred in posting a permanent police guard at the property for a number of years, why can’t basic upkeep be paid for, the resident asked. “Can the grass be cut or perhaps the graffiti on the walls be painted over?” In its written response, the DPWI confirmed security would remain on site to prevent unlawful occupation, and it will continue to cut and clear overgrowth while pursuing the open tender. No renovation or demolition is planned as the department’s “intended process” must be followed and finalised. The DPWI said it cannot comment on whether the property may be transferred to another department, as the process was not yet final. The next step rests with its Disposal Unit.

‘Tony lived life to the fullest’ Jamey Gordon

owner was 58 and would have celebrated his birthday on 27 September. “We even planned something small like a gathering,” Maggie says. “And now, instead of celebrating his birthday, we have to have a funeral.” Maggie recounts his final days with a steadiness that belies the weight of what she carries. When Tony was admitted to hospital, doctors who knew his history well did everything they could. Maggie asked only that they keep him alive – for the sake of the boys, 10 and 14, who adored their father. She described Tony as a father who showed up. He made their porridge every morning and served it on a tray. He picked them up from school, took them out for meals and bought them

Helderberg businessman Antonio “Tony” de Gouveia’s philosophy of life was a straightforward one, “You have one life, live it.” Accordingly, he lived every moment as if it was his last; he would decide to do a road trip on a whim, let a struggling customer take food and leave their ID as collateral, sit outside his son’s school for an entire day if he was battling to adjust and needed a parent close by. But that same motto carries a heavier weight now. On Wednesday 16 September, Tony’s life came to an end in a hospital bed with his loved ones at his side. The former Strand Fisheries

That love of a real father.” The community knew Tony and Maggie through the popular fish-and-chips shop they owned for decades. At the time, Maggie started working at a school while Tony planned to spend more time with their sons. In the years after the family business was sold, Tony’s world narrowed. Beroep op g’skap Barend Williams Twee misdaadvoorvalle by die Rusthof- behuisingsontwikkelingsprojek se bouperseel het tot ’n nood gemeenskapsvergadering gelei. Die projek behels die ontwikkeling van 363 Breaking New Ground-wooneenhede, wat na verwagting teen 2028 vir begunstigdes van wyke 85, 86 en 100 voltooi sal word. Die ontwikkeling is vroeër vanjaar tydens die verkiesing van die projekbetrokkenheidkomitee (PEC) aangekondig (“Housing committee elected,” DistriksPos & Helderberg Gazette, 15 April). Die vergadering is op Vrydag 11 September beroep nadat houtpale, wat vir die omheining van die terrein geplant is, op Donderdag 10 September gesteel is. WAGTE MET VUURWAPEN GEDREIG Later dieselfde dag is twee veiligheids wagte, wat ontplooi is om die terrein te beveilig, glo met ’n vuurwapen gedreig. Sowat 120 gemeenskapslede het die vergadering bygewoon. Lisa Visser, die sekretaris van die Strand-gemeenskapspolisiëringsforum (GPF), Strand-polisie, verteenwoordigers van die veiligheidsmaatskappy en die gemeenskapsleier Brent Louis het die vergadering toegespreek. Die projek se gemeenskapskakelbeampte, Liezel Williams, wat einde Julie aangestel is nadat sy uit die PEC bedank het, het ook die skare toegespreek. Sy het aan DistriksPos & Helderberg Gazette verduidelik wat sy met die mense teenwoordig by die vergadering gedeel het: “Jou ma moet ook nog ’n huis kry. Dis ’n gemeenskapsprojek en as hulle steel, dan steel hulle van die eie mense af.” Sy het mense gewaarsku om nie gesteel-

NUWE DATUM, BEGROTING Carl Pophaim, die burgemeesterskomitee-lid vir menslike nedersettings, het ’n opdatering oor die projek verskaf. Die geraamde begroting was R84 miljoen in April toe die projek in die tenderfase vir die grondwerke was, maar is nou ongeveer R132 miljoen, wat siviele werke en bou strukture insluit. Dit volg nadat Asla op ’n 24-maande-kontrak as die kontrakteur aangestel is en die konstruksieterrein op Vrydag 12 Junie oorhandig is. Water, elektrisiteit en rioolstelsels word tans op die eerste terrein aangebring, waarna die werk na die ander twee terreine sal uitbrei. Bouwerk aan huise sal na verwagting in April volgende jaar begin. “Die projek is op skedule en sal in Mei 2028 voltooi wees,” het Pophaim gesê. Hy het bevestig dat die Stad Kaapstad bewus is van die voorvalle van diefstal nadat die kontrakteur dit by wetstoepassingsowerhede aangemeld het. “Asla is tans in besit van ’n voorvalverwysingsnommer,” het Pophaim gesê. “Die voorvalle sal mootnlik nie tot vertragings lei nie, maar die Stad voer aktiewe dag- en nagpatrollies uit om veilig te versterk.” Pophaim het plaaslike inwoners aangemoedig om aansoek te doen vir werksgeleenthede by die projek deur op die Stad se databasis vir werksoekers te registreer.

New man at subcouncil helm Barend Williams Romeo de Lange has been appointed Subcouncil 8 manager, bringing years of experience in municipal governance and service-delivery coordination to the Helderberg. He took over the reins from Nonzuzo Jacob, who had been acting in the position, at the beginning of July. “My journey has been driven by a commitment to building stronger connections between residents, councillors and the City of Cape Town’s administration,” De Lange explained. As subcouncil manager, he acts as the link between communities and the City of Cape Town’s administration. He supports councillors, facilitates ward-committee processes and coordinates service delivery across different departments. “Subcouncils serve as the direct link between residents and the City, enabling governance that is accessible, accountable and community-focused,” explained Theresa Uys, Mayoral Committee member for Corporate Services. De Lange added: “My first impression is that residents of the Helderberg are deeply committed to their communities and eager for responsive, accountable service delivery.” He believes what makes Subcouncil 8 distinctive is that the are combines urban, peri-urban and rural dynamics in one subcouncil, where established suburbs exist alongside informal settlements, farming areas and coastal towns. “This diversity means service-delivery priorities differ widely, from housing and infrastructure backlogs to stormwater and traffic management to coastal protection and tourism support. Balancing these needs is what makes the Helderberg unique.” De Lange credits the Helderberg’s

character to historic Somerset West, the coastal energy of Strand and Gordon’s Bay, and the resilience of communities such as Nomzamo, Lwandle, Rusthof, Firgrove, Macassar and Sir Lowry’s Pass. For him key priorities include housing and informal-settlement upgrades, investment in roads, stormwater and river management, safety, public facilities and coastal management. However, with the local elections in November, the new subcouncil manager’s most immediate priority is to strengthen trust and transparency during what is humorously referred to as “silly season”. “Residents want to see that their concerns are taken seriously, regardless of political timelines,” he said. De Lange’s approach is to facilitate open communication and create platforms for meaningful engagement with the City. “The Helderberg is a proud and diverse region, and my commitment is to work with councillors, officials and communities to ensure that service delivery reflects their needs. Progress may not always be immediate, but accountability and responsiveness will guide my approach.”

Jong skrywer se boek te koop Om ’n opstel by die skool te skryf is vir sommige leerders moeilik omdat dit heelwat konsentrasie en verbeelding verg om dit behoorlik te doen.

Die 11-jarige Holly Featherstream het pas haar eerste boek, Forest of Fire, die lig laat sien en reeds vier van ses boeke in die “Defenders”-reeks voltooi.

Om ’n hele boek te skryf, is egter ’n ander storie. Dit verg nie net konsentrasie oor ’n lang tydperk nie, maar ook uitgebreide verbeelding, uithouvermoë, vasbyt, toegewydheid en ’n groot hoeveelheid geduld. Die elfjarige Holly Featherstream (haar skrywersnaam) het dit alles reggekry in die jaar

waarin haar eerste boek die lig gesien het. Holly is ’n entoesiastiese haasliefhebber wat twee lewendige hasies en ’n stuk of 20 speelhasies het. Haar liefde vir hierdie pragtige diertjies het haar so geïnspireer dat sy ’n boekreeks begin skryf het waarin hase die hoofrolle speel. Haar eerste boek, Forest of Fire, is pas van die drukker af. Die bekendstelling is op Saterdag 3 Oktober om 11:00 by Sunset Books in Strand met ’n radio-onderhoud op

Woensdag 23 September om 12:00 op Radio Helderberg. Forest of Fire is die eerste van ses boeke in die reeks “Defenders”. Die boek handel oor ’n dorpie met warrior-konyne wat van uitwissing gered moet word en die wedervaringe van ’n groepie inwoners op hul reis na die Forest of Fire. Die vertroue en samewerking onder die konyne bevat heelwat meer as net ’n oppervlakkige verhaal van ’n denkbeeldige konyngemeenskap. Die interaksie van die verskillende karakters

met elkeen se eiesoortige persoonlikheid bied die leser heerlike verrassingselemente. Van karakters met sterk leierskap tot weeskonyntjies met onderliggende vrese, kry Holly dit reg om die verhaal oor die ekspedisie ’n byna lewende ondervinding vir die leser te maak. Om op slegs 11-jarige ouderdom reeds vier boeke te voltooi, is ’n buitengewone prestasie – hou hierdie ontluikende skrywer dop. Teamwork makes clean work When the wind died down, the feet flowed in – and more than 100 Strand beachgoers hauled nearly half a ton of rubbish off the sand in just two hours. Over 140 movers and shakers descended on Strand Beach opposite De Brasserie on Saturday (19 September) to mark International Coastal Cleanup Day, and what a morning it was. The breeze conveniently dropped just in time, the volunteers got stuck in and the sand was noticeably lighter by the time they were done. In two hours the group cleared 440 kg of rubbish from a two-kilometre stretch of Strand Beach. Only 40 kg of that was recyclable – most of the haul was smaller fragments: lollipop sticks, straws, bottle tops and cigarette butts. The good news, say organisers, is that each year less is being removed, a sign that the community'’ regular #pickituppickpickitup efforts are making a real difference. It was not all work either. Volunteers worked, played, connected and learnt – and some lucky participants even left with prizes. The Helderberg Ocean Awareness Movement and Shark Spotters, under the #smartliving banner, organised the cleanup, with the haul removed by CL Trading. The event was supported by the City of Cape Town, Strand Neighbourhood Watch (Strand Buurtwag), Secure Rite Security, Newberry House Montessori School, Busamed Paardevlei Private Hospital, CCH Strand, Bossa Strand Pavilion, Helderberg Sunrise Rotary Club, Mondeor Eco School, Natural Energy Surf Store and Templar of the Cape.

Drummies fly HHH flag Barend Williams Two drum majorettes of Hottentots-Holland High School will represent South Africa at the World Championship of Majorette Sport in Poland. Grade 11 learners Micah Adams and Tamia Dominy will be part of the South African Majorette and Cheerleading Association (Samca) team competing at the World Majorette Federation’s competition at the Spodek Arena in Katowice this weekend from Saturday 26 to Monday 28 September. In preparation, the pair participated in a practice camp in Johannesburg, departing on last Friday (18 September). “I am so excited to represent my country,” Adams said, adding that the Polishe trip is her first time outside SA. The world championship berth comes after the Hottentots-Holland High drummies finished third at the 2026 Samca national championship in Roodepoort, Gauteng during the July school holidays (“HHH dril tot podium,” DistrictMail & Helderberg Gazette, 29 July).

Dominy and Adams’ selection to the national team is a highlight for the school, while Grade 9 learner Ameekah Latief also received her provincial colours from the Western Province Majorettes & Cheerleading Association for 2027. Karin Verster, head coach of the HHH drummies, added that Latief’s achievement is particularly remarkable as she only started participating in majorettes when she reached high school, while most of her peers have been involved since primary school. But the celebration is tempered by a harsh reality. “There were five learners who qualified for the world championship, but they all could not afford to go,” Verster said. She pointed to the contrast between the sport’s popularity in the basin and the serious lack of funding available to talented learners. Despite the financial constraints, the school is already looking ahead. Taya Pettinger has been named squad leader for large and small drill for 2027 after

Parel Vallei High School cricket coaches and players from Grade 8 to 12 were up for auction at the end of August, with the tournament taking place at Parel Vallei and the Somerset West Cricket Club (Radloff Park) from Thursday 17 to Saturday 19 September. After two days of matches – teams battling each other and strong winds on Friday – the Kaliber Knights ended top of the log to secure a place in the final. The King Pie Kings faced the Gray Nicolls KitFwd Legends in the playoffs, where the Kings were crowned and gained the other spot in the final. Top-tier racers in ocean ‘United by Speed’

he Strand and Gordon’s Bay coastline is gearing-up for world-class water-sports action as Powerboat Racing SA (PBRSA) hosts the 2026 International Inflatable Super Series from Friday 25 September to Saturday 3 October. Bringing top-tier racers together under the banner “United by Speed”, the competition will test pilot endurance and agility across three core disciplines: surf, circuit and long-haul. The week-long event starts this Friday, with the opening ceremony and events hosted at the Gordon’s Bay Yacht Club (GBYC). More than 40 teams have entered to battle on the water, including teams from South Africa, Namibia and USA. The competitive racing officially gets underway over the weekend with the thrilling surf circuit at Strand Beach on Saturday 26 September and Sunday 27 September. The action on both race days will start at 09:00, following an 08:00 pilot briefing. 100 KM LONG HAUL Following a rest day on Monday 28 September for testing and practice, action shifts to the gruelling 100 km long-
