Volgenspolisieverslae is ’nsaak van openbare geweld en openbare onrus omstreeks 17:30 by die Macassar-polisiekantoor aangemeld ná vandalisme bydie plaaslike biblioteek. Die polisie se eenheid vir openbareorde is ontbied om die situasietebeheer,maar niemandis in hegtenis geneemnie.

Die Strand-gemeenskapspolisiëringsforum (GPF) deel hierdie kommer weens die algemene en voortdurendegeweldin die dorp –veral in gebiedesoos Casablanca en Gustrouw.

“Sulkegeweld plaas onskuldige inwoners in gevaar en skep vrees in ons gemeenskappe, aangesien bendeverwante skietery en onwettigevuurwapens ’n groot uitdaging in baie gebiedevan dieWesKaap bly,” sê Brent Louis, ’n woordvoerder vir die Strand-GPF.

City cuts ties with‘corrupt’ contractor

The City of Cape Townhas terminated all contracts with Triple CMaintenance and Services after the company’s owner allegedly attempted to bribe the City manager, Lungelo Mbandazayo, with R1,4 million in cash.

The termination follows ajoint investigation by the City’s Ethics and Forensics Department and the police.

Working with the police in acontrolled operation, the City manager acted as an authorised agent, leading to the arrest of the business owner, Shaun Roos (“Citymanager entraps,” DistrictMail &Helderberg Gazette,11March)

The 56-year-old Roos appeared in the Cape TownMagistrates’ Court on corruption charges last Thursday (12 March) for information related to his bid for bail.

The case was reportedly postponed to Monday 23 March for aformal bail application.

According to the municipality, the terminated contracts are primarily construction-related, covering road maintenance, resurfacing and stormwater infrastructure projects.

“Corruption will not be tolerated in any form and any attempts to improperly influence municipal officials will be met with firm and decisive action,” the City assured in astatement around the termination of the contracts on Thursday morning.

The municipality has implemented alternative arrangements to ensure uninterrupted service delivery while proceeding with processes to replace the terminated contracts or engage appointed standby suppliers.

“The City remains committed to maintaining municipal services while upholding strict ethical standards in all operations.”

Tip-off leads to abalonebust

Gordon’s Bay police arrestedaman for transportingabouthalfamillion randworth of abalone last Thursday (12 March).

According to apolicereport,officers received information about asuspicious vehicleonthe ClarenceDrive(R44) towards Gordon’s Bay around 20:00 Officers set up astrategic roadblock on Faure Marine Drive andpulled overa Toyota Hilux whenitwas spotted.

Asearch revealed 21 bags of abalone in the back of the bakkie.

Officials from the DepartmentofForestry, Fisheries andthe Environment were calledtoevaluate the haul and confirmed atotal of 2218 units of abalone worth an estimated R500 000.

The suspect faces charges of illegal possession andtransportation of abalone and possessionofdrugs. Police also confiscated the bakkie.

The suspect appeared in the Strand Magistrates’ Court on Monday(16 March).

The plateslooked less like poultry feed and more like something that may appear in the pages of Bon AppétitMagazine:berries arranged just so, miniature pancakes stacked with care, retro jelly salads gleaming in layers. Onlythe dinerswere not people butchickens.

Kitching, in education, saidifshe ever changedcareersshe would optfor professional food styling. Her audience consists of four silkies, the ornamental chicken breed famousfor its fluffy plumage and slightly bewildered expression. “I have four, three hens and one rooster, called Russell (Crowe), Klaradyn, Fielaand Clifford, the latter actually ahen

Her affection for birds predates the chickens. “I adore birds,especiallypigeons and chickens. They are incredibly intelligent, funny and sweet.”

Silkies, unlike manybreeds, do not require large roaming areas. Kitching’s birds free-range during the day and return indoors at night.

“They follow avery strict routineregarding bedtime. Russell starts crowing at 04:30 sharp. ”

The elaborate plating began as asmall experiment. “I started by making them charcuterie boards to see which foods they would eat first. It wassoentertainingwatching them that it naturally progressed to gourmet-styleplatingfor hoendertjies.”

Their diet is refined. “They geta good-quality chickstarter mashfrom Drakensberg Feeds. Theyalsoget fresh fruit, vegetables, seeds andnuts, eggs and red meat. Lots of berries.”

Twiceaweekshe adds multivitamins, probiotics and vitamin Eoil. “Iusedto plate my kids’ meals like that when they were younger. It made me so happyto

seethe expressions on their faces.”

The chickens themselves are notwithoutpersonality. “Russell adoresmeand loves to be cuddled andcarriedaround. He gets extremely excited in the morning and doesalittledance when it’stimeto get up.”

He is also territorial. “He can’t stand anyone else andwilldrawblood if anyone else goes near him.”

Klaradyn is “dumb as adoornail but very friendly andaffectionate”, while Fiela, halfthe size of the others, is “a real diva” who “soundslike acicada when shegetsexcited”.

Silkiesare delicate animals. “They’re ahigh-maintenance breed! Theirhair constantly needs trimming,otherwise theycan’tsee athing.”

When the gourmetplates appearall decorumflies outthe window. “They can be quite loud when food is involved.”

Russell, predictably, takescharge. “He becomes arealbullyaround food and will grabthe nearest hen’stailfeathers to displaydominance. Themini pancakes take about10minutes. The retro jelly saladstake ages because each layer has to set beforeIcan pour on the next.”

In Pringle Bayithas becomeasmall domestic theatre: arooster named after RussellCrowe, adivahen thatsounds like acicada andplates of foodworthy of alifestylemagazine, all served with care to fourfluffy diners.

When foot and mouthdisease (FMD) restrictions threatened to forcea multinational food corporation to dump thousands of litresofmilk daily, Strand manufacturing companyProplantStainless Steel stepped in with an extraordinary solution.

Located on Gerber BoulevardinGants Centre, the company completedwhat would normallybeaweeks-long project in mere days, building an emergency pasteuriser plantunder strict government regulations.

Local business owner Willy Strang, together with his four-member team, rose to the challenge, dedicating approximately 20 hours to completethe critical project. Theplant wasdesigned by Solutions Technology from Cape Town.

“The client told us they felt we were the only companythey believedcould pull it offunder these conditions,” Strang recalls.

Upon learning the crisis was directly linked to the FMD outbreak, hisresponse wasimmediate: “I wasconcerned and worried, andIknew Ihad to do everything in my power to getthe pasteuriser builtassoon as possible.”

WhileStrang admits he hadnever builtsomething under such extreme time pressure, his philosophyremained unchanged:“We have always accepteda challenge– work is work.”

The custom-builtpasteuriserheats milk to precisely 71,5° Cfor 15 seconds –killing harmful bacteria andmaking milk safe forconsumption. With restrictions preventing unpasteurisedmilk fromentering processing facilities,the emergency plantbecame alifeline to avoid catastrophic daily losses

Strang’s plantcan process approximately 100 000 litres daily. “Basically, it’sheating the milk andholding it at high temperature,”heexplains.“The key componentisthe ‘zig-zag’tubeatthe back – aholdingtube. It takes15seconds to pass through before beingcooleddown again.”

The5-meter long, 2-meterwideand 2,5-meter high unituses stainless steel throughout. “Stainless steel is always used formost foodproduct lines” dueto its hygienic properties, Strangnotes.The compact unit integrates seamlessly with

existing operations, pasteurisingmilk before it enters the client’sfactoryfor foodproduction.

Family played acrucial role,particularlyStrang’s daughterMichelle Robert-Baxter,who servedascommunication link betweenclientand company. “She keptmecalmand groundedduring the stressful time,” Strangreflects. Michelle arrivedbefore 06:00 daily, orderedmaterials andkepteveryone fueled with refreshments

Despite sourcing materials through “localsuppliers,stockfrom ourstores, andsome supplied by the client,”the biggest challengecameduringthe final push:“Workinguntil Sunday nightlate, beingconvinced we wouldn’t finish beforetransportarrivedMondaymorning –but we did!”

Strangiseager to thank his core team: Walter Brinkhuis, AndrewWilliams, ShaneBurricks,JohannesTembo,and Michelle. “Theypulled together like nothing I’ve seen before.”

“Myfather andhis teamworked aroundthe clock,”said Michelle. “They understood thatevery day of delay meant thousandsmorelitres of milk goingtowaste whilepeople need that nutrition.”

Renowned potter Debbie Farnaby has createdasymbolic masterpiece to help raise funds forwhat wouldbeaonce-ina-lifetimeculturalexchange trip.

The Potters Place have maintained aclose friendshipwith Weirdough sinceits establishment. “The staff are caring and kind and deliver coffeetothe pottery studio whilst we are working, sharingalaugh withusand supporting our exhibitions –just good friends and neighbours,” she explains.

“I hope the pot makes people smile, I hope that it enables the trip and that they have afantasticexperience. Ihave made it forthem withlove, joy and in recognition that they make my day better whenthey walk through the door withareally great cup of coffee.”

As apassionate believer in travel’s transformative power, Debbie sees this initiative as achance for staff to createunforgettable memories. “I lovetocreate –actually I needtocreate, and so to do what Ilove and achieveapositive result whilst having fun is the best!”

Her impressive 60 cm-high ceramic world map, adorned with five bakerfigurines, required three months using the ancientSumerian coiling technique. “Clay cannot be rushed –ittakes its time settling into ashape,” she explains.

The meticulous process involved layering terracotta clay to createtwo 40 cm bowls, then joiningthem together.Working from aworld map, she carved continents into black slip, usingterracotta formountains and white slip for reefs and snowy regions. Ared circle highlightsArgentina as the destination fromSouthAfrica, while five whimsical coffee-cup-holding figures representthe bakery staff

Weirdough, an award-winningbakery bringingauthentic Argentine flavours to Somerset West, reflects owners Nadia and Adrian Kaiser’s dual heritage. “I lived in Argentinafor 12 years, my husband Adrianwas born and raised there. Our oldest son was born there as well,” Nadia explains.

“We identify as neitherSouth African nor Argentine. We are acombination of both.”

Theirmotivation for sending employees to Argentina stems from two factors. “We’ve always felt there wasagap between people wanting to experience Argentine cultureand what you can learn from books. To experience them firsthandis first prize,” she explains.

More importantly, Nadiaviews employees as family. “Allthe guys thatwork with us arelike family. We wanted to give them the possibility to travel to see another part of the world.”

Formost staff, except one whoflewto Durban, this wouldbetheirfirst time on an aeroplane and outside South Africa.

“Almost all of them come from low-income backgrounds and would rarely get this opportunity.”

The travelling teamcompriseshead baker Sibongile Nerwande, assistant baker Siyamthanda Mazwi, and front-of-house staff Jade Julies, VuyoTambaniand Finn Ssengendo.Jade,who hasworked withthe Kaisers since opening, expressedoverwhelming excitement.

“When Nadia told us aboutthe trip, I wasstoked.Iwas overwhelmed andexcited; myheart was beatingfast.Ialready started brainstorming my whole trip.”

For her first internationalexperience, she’s eager to explore Argentine culture, food, tango and street dance. “Thistrip is about making memories, unwinding, exploring new vibes and making stories to tell,” she shares.

The initiative hasalso inspired personal development: “I’ve been working smarter and not harder, refresh of mindset.”

Despitehavingnumerous fundraising initiatives planned, Nadia admits timing hasbeen challenging. “We are asmall team andwejust opened asecond location atWaterstone Village, which means our production requirements have basically doubled. We’re working very longhours, very long shifts, andmyhusband and Iare actively working as well,” she explains.

Nevertheless, they’ve organised several innovative fundraising approaches, including anonlinecrowdfunding campaign.

The goal is September travel, requiring funds to be raised by July. “Our goal is to send them in spring,soSeptember. December holidays are very expensive on that sideand it’s also extremely hot, so we’re hoping toaim for September –that’sthe best time to go.”

Nadia demonstrates absolute commitment to making this dreamreality:

“We did speakwithin ourteamthat worst-case scenario,we’ll look at how much we’ve raisedupuntil that point and pull aname outofa hatordrawstraws in afair way. We’re hoping it’sall of them, but if it’s only afew, we’ll take thatas well.”

Last Sunday (8 March) marked International Women’sDay. To highlight thepower of the feminine spirit andinspire readers, Mariette van den Berg shared valuable insights from her experience breaking barriers in the culinary world.

Thesensationalchef from Somerset West, shares: “The lingering aroma of a chicken roast in the ovenhas alwaysfelt like home to me.Inthe predominantly male culinary world, the kitchen felt like abattlefield –armoured in acrisp white jacket but wielding sharp resolve. Over the years, my culinary career became aseries of conquered peaks as Ilearned to navigate the intense culture andemergeasa strong leader. Gradually, the yelling and screaming tradition faded, replaced by calmer, more confident command.

“Now, working with apredominantly female team, my kitchen moves with a calm, relaxed rhythm –filled withrespect andlaughter. Theburns on our arms are badges of honour andevery dish is crafted with love. We are no longer women fighting for space in aman’s world; we are the creators of ourdestiny and living proof thatculinary excellence knowsnogender.”

Mariette’sculinary journey began at a young age, spending countless hours in the kitchen with family, learning and creating as the years passed.

At age 26, she wasemployed by aGerman family as ahostess on their yacht. “It quickly became clearthatI wasn’tthere to cleanbathrooms –Iwas there to cook That’swhen food truly took over my life,” she recalls.

“At 28, Ienrolled at Warwick’s Chef School in Hermanus, where Igraduated as acommis chef andworked my wayup throughvariouskitchens to become the chef Ihad always aspiredtobe.”

Mariette heads up her ownbusiness venture, At My Table, which started as asmall idea she hoped would work.It was established in 2021, shortly afterthe Covid-19 pandemic and justmonths after her daughter was born.

“Those early days meant long hours andmyfirst cooking workshop withonly two participants. Three years later, we’re booked months in advance. Iamblessed beyond measure,” she reflects.

“Asawoman in this industry, success meansbeing skilled at your craft until your gender becomes secondary to your talent. Truesuccess isn’t just financial prosperity –it’stransforming an environment thatonce seemed so intimidating into your own domain.

“Womenleadwith emotional intelligence, organisation andrespect,and we will continue to do so as we builda culture rooted in equality. The presence of a

woman in professional kitchens will no longer be ararity, buta natural, modern component of culinary life.

An assessment visit to Macassar by the energy teams of the City of Cape Town revealed vandalism to importantinfrastructure as “extreme”.

This according to Xanthea Limberg, Mayoral Committeemember for Energy, who was part of the group of municipal officials who visited the areatosee how public lighting can be improved across the city

“On ourvisit we saw instances of extreme vandalism where concretestreetlight poleswere chopped in halffor theircable,” Limberg related, and Macassar has seen repeated incidents of theft and vandalism.

“Weare prioritising repair and maintenance work in the area, in addition to LED upgrades within the broader district.The City is alsoexploring high-techinfrastructure protection solutions.”

Macassarforms part of the City’s streetlight infrastructure maintenance and upgrading programme aimed atensuring that infrastructureisrepaired, maintained and upgraded where necessary.

“Our teams remain activeonthe ground in allcommunities across the city, maintaining our extensive public lighting network of more than 245 000streetlights,” Limberg added.

“My visit to Macassar forms part of our focusedefforts to oversee public infrastructure maintenance, ensuring all communities remain well lit. In addition, we are closely monitoring our City-wide streetlight burnrate, which currently sits at 87,7% accordingtoour most recent data, justshy of our 90%target.”

service requests, vandalism in the districthas already cost the City morethan R1,9million in more than2810 logged public-service requests, crucial funds that could have servedthe Cape Town’s economy’s critical energy needs.

“While our Energy Safety teamsand Law Enforcement officials maintain visibilityinhotspotareas, we call on residents to be our eyes andears andtoassist us in protecting ourpowerinfrastructure,” Limberg urged.

“Reporting vandalism and illegalactivities helps us to respond faster and ensures residents and all communities benefit from reliable electricity services.”

The past financial year the City spent about R62million on maintenance andreplacement of vandalised or stolen electricity infrastructure. To curb such vandalism and theft, it launched Protect Your Power, acampaign highlighting the massive impact vandalism, theft andillegal connectionshave on communities.

Iamwritingwith regard to an article published on Wednesday11February, regarding the sewer overflows in Broadlands Park andsomeparts of Gustrouw (“‘Ons is nie diere nie!’”, DistrictMail & Helderberg Gazette).

Iraisedthese concerns in our monthly Subcouncil 8meeting on Thursday 22 January. In this meeting Imade it clear that we are very happy with the progress of the upgrades taking place. This will have great long-term benefits.

However, Irequested short-term interventions or solutions from theWater and Sanitation Directorate regarding theconstant andrepetitive sewer overflows. These have been haunting these communities for afew months now.

My fellowcouncillorEvolino Simons also sent an email to Zahid Badroodien, MayoralCommittee member forWater andSanitation, in early February.Hehas notresponded, even after afollow-up email was sent to him

We requested asite visit to speak to the residents. We wanted him to see the terrible situationthey are living in, not to mentionthe health implications.

On Wednesday 18 February,Councillor Badroodien, together with themayor of Cape Town,conducted asite visit in Helderberg. They were checking on the progress of the water mains upgrades.

This visit was notannounced via subcouncil. Onlysome councillors were aware of the visit; none of the opposition councillors serving on subcouncil were informed or invited to join. Yet, we are expected to deliver the same services to our community.

My concern is thatCouncillor Badroodien was aware of the sewer overflows in these areas.

He came to Strand anddid not even attempt to add these areas to visit

It is concerning thatour people’splights andchallenges are ignored by thepowers thatbe. They are mandated to deliver a certain level of service, but never do.

Yet come elections, these areas are the first they visit with aT-shirt and food parcel.

They ask for votes from thevery same people they ignore for five years.

Thepurpose of the 18 February visitwas to oversee allcapital projects of the City currently underway in the Helderberg basin. Ionlyreceived the invitation for the visitvia the Mayoral Committee office aday or two prior. Protocol is to inform the subcouncil, whereby an invitation is sent to allcouncillors serving withinthe subcouncil. My officetook thisupwiththe offices of the Mayoral Committee members, as this was the first time the subcouncil was not informed. As the subcouncil chairperson, Ihighlightedall major projects and programmes being rolled out in the Helderberg which is public knowledge. Ibelieve in transparency and always keep the house informed.

Our recent visittothe Helderberg with the mayor confirmed the progress of the close to R1 billion being invested in the area. This includesthe Gordon’s Bay Pump Station and Rising Main, the TrappiesSewer Rehabilitation, the Lourens River Flood Alleviation Project, the SirLowry’s Pass River upgrade and ongoing pipe replacement programmes. These are long-term interventions that strengthen the entire network and have been publicly welcomed across the political spectrum.That said, Iamclear that where residents are experiencing sewer overflows, we must respond decisively.

In Broadlands Park and parts of Gustrouw, the current overflowsare linkedto asewer collapseand excessive sand and foreign objects in the system. Emergency repairs are being arranged and we are finalising the appointment of the contractor. Repairs are expected to start in the near future,and our teams continue to respond to sewer overflow notifications and delivering relief.

We take every sewage spill seriously because dignifiedsanitation is non-negotiable. The City remains committed to resolving current challenges, investing in resilient infrastructure and working with residents to protect and strengthen the sewer network forall.

Two of SomersetWest’s most decorated tennisveterans have returned from theSANationals in Gauteng with gold around their necks, proving that in the game of life and tennis, the “comeback” is the greatest play of all.

Denley Richards (82) andArchie Rudman (70) both secured top honours in their respective agecategories, further cementing their status as legendsinthe Tennis South Africa Mastersdivision

The realstory, however, began 54 years ago. In 1972, a28-year-oldRichards, then asenior Eastern Province provincial player, faced off against a16-year-old Rudman.

After that match, thetwo wenttheir separate ways, each excelling inthe sport on different stages.

Through astroke of luck, the two reconnected in Somerset West following

Rudman’sretirement 13 years ago. Since then, theyhave become inseparablepracticepartners, mentorsand friends.

Today,theyare both national champions and ranked number one in South Africa for their agegroups.

For Richards, this victory marks his fourth nationaltitle in the 80-plus age group.His journey began at age 10, eventuallytaking him to the world stage. He’s representedSAeight times in world championships across India,the USA and Europe andoncereached aworld ranking of third in the 55-plus category

Entering as the number two seed, Richardsdefeated the top seed to claim his latest title.

On Saturday,SWCC displayedremarkable composure to clincha three-wicket victory over UCT in aFirst Division B clash.

After winning the toss and electingto field, SWCC’s attack applied constant pressure. CameronHewson led the charge withaclinical 3/43,well-supported by Paul Steyn (2/25) and Jason Lee Josephs(2/29).

UCT struggled to find momentum, eventually being bundledout for 182 runsinthe 48th over.
