City of Cape Town officials have moved to reassure residents and holidaymakers that water quality at Strand’s main recreational areas remains well within safety limits, even as infrastructure challenges and sewage overflows in the Paardevlei area continue to cause concern. Eddie Andrews, deputy mayor and Mayoral Committee member for Spatial Planning and the Environment, confirmed that recent water samples from the Strand Lifesaving Club and the Strand Pipe surfing area consistently meet recreational guidelines. “An individual count of less than 240 cfu per 100ml is regarded as acceptable for recreational use,” Andrews stated. “All of the results since 20 November

to date were lower than 240.” The most recent samples from Friday 5 December recorded low enterococci counts: 5 at the pipe surfing area and 35 at the lifesaving club, far below the critical threshold. Officials attribute the last significant water quality failure on Wednesday 8 October to heavy rainfall. Zahid Badroodien, Mayoral Committee member for Water and Sanitation, clarified confusion regarding environmental alerts. He said overflows linked to the Trappies line near Wilberforce Street do not meet the criteria for a formal National Environmental Management Act (NEMA) Section 30 notice. Badroodien emphasised that beach closures are determined by actual water-quality results, not merely the presence of an infrastructure alert. However, the City has proactively informed environmental authorities of infrastruc-

ture failures. The source of recent discharges in the Paardevlei Wetland link canal was traced to the Helderberg Coastal Pump Station, primarily driven by “sewer misuse” or foreign objects damaging equipment. The City responded by installing an additional pump, upgrading the programmable logic controller and using super-sucker trucks to clear spills. Despite its reassurances, Jamii Hamlin, environmental representative of the Helderberg Ratepayers’ Association, articulated the community’s frustration. “The ongoing sewage overflows... pose a significant environmental health risk,” he said, arguing that protocols require the contaminated areas, including the Lourens River Estuary, to be closed and cleaned. He also raised concerns about the City’s data, pointing out that testing for

enterococci without providing E. coli data is misleading. “A limited study for Strand highlights that often there was a full decimal point higher for E. coli compared to enterococci.” Hamlin reiterated the community’s demand for a Water Quality Flag System and a “user rating” system from seasoned swimmers and surfers to provide the public with real-time status updates, transparent, subject to response. Francine Higham, Mayoral Committee member for Community Services and Health, confirmed the Woltemade and Dune Park public toilets, closed for essential maintenance, would reopen on Monday 15 December. It will operate from 07:30 to 18:00 (weekdays) and until 19:00 on weekends. Meanwhile, Mosterd’s Bay will be closed from 15 December to 15 January, due to Strand seawall construction.

Marking more than any milestone Jamey Gordon New nonagenarian Marié Swart of Somerset West embodies this life-defining principle she offers: “Always give your best to every opportunity with God by your side.” This has sustained her through nine remarkable decades. What’s more, her milestones are far from ordinary; how many can say they plan to retire only after their 90th birthday? This was celebrated at an intimate office gathering last Thursday (11 December). Swart’s birthday coincides with the end of a remarkable 26-year career at Miller Bosman Le Roux Attorneys. There she served with distinction as a conveyancing and litigation secretary from 1 September 1999. At the birthday celebration the firm’s director, Gerhard Smit, told guests: “Today is deeply emotional for me, as I reflect on someone who has been my secretary for as long as I’ve been married – Marie, who turns 90 today.” He related how she, born in 1935, had witnessed extraordinary historical changes. “When she was born Nelson Mandela was just 17 years old, bread cost six pennies and there was no television. Marie had to wait 41 years before watching her first TV episode. “In her remarkable life she has lived through the Great Depression, World War II, the moon landings and multiple epidemics, including polio, Asian flu, HIV/ Aids, SARS and Covid-19. “At 85 to 87 years old Marie worked from home during Covid with masks and sanitiser, arriving at the office every

I held her up to our staff as a demonstration of resilience, someone who knew ‘it’s not new, it will pass.’” A CAREER SPANNING DECADES Swart’s remarkable journey began as one of eight children growing up on the East Rand. After completing her education at Witwatersrand Technikon, she embarked on a six-decade career, starting as a typist for a postmaster in Johannesburg in 1951 at age 16. Life brought personal fulfilment when she married Willem Adriaan “Blackie”

Swart, a dedicated South African Police Service member whose transfer brought the family to Somerset West 50 years ago. Together, they raised daughter Lorna, while Swart built a reputation for unwavering loyalty across diverse industries, from John Laing Construction to Rex Truform fashion. She dedicated 35 years to insurance between Federated Employers and Price Forbes before transitioning to legal services, which proved to be her true calling. What sustained Swart’s passion well into her golden years? “The interaction with co-workers and clients, and the satisfaction of a job well done,” she explained. This love for meaningful connections shaped her daily routine, centred on meticulous legal document preparation and Deeds Office liaison, but motivated by helping clients navigate important legal matters.

Marie Swart celebrated her milestone birthday alongside her beloved daughter, Lorna, who couldn’t be happier about her mom’s well-earned retirement. The sentiment was perfectly captured by the cupcake message: “To do list: 1. Rest. 2. Reset. 3. Retreat”.

LEGENDARY WORK ETHIC “For 26 years Marie has been absolutely reliable and trustworthy,” said Smit. “She had a special placard reading ‘Quest for Excellence’, and I don’t know anyone who believed in this principle more strongly.” Smit highlighted her substantial contributions, noting she has handled approximately R380 million in commercial bonds since 2022 alone, with nearly R800 million to R1 billion processed through her capable hands via her long-standing relationship with Nedbank. “Marie possesses a work ethic that few people have,” Smit emphasised, sharing how she once worked until 13:00 on a leave day, writing: “Gerhard, you have too much work for me to take a full day off.” He recalled a particularly touching moment: “Once Marie told me: ‘Gerhard, you can take away my salary, but please don’t take away my work from me.’ This exemplifies her extraordinary dedication.” Smit praised her adaptability through technological change: “From Ericsson phones to WhatsApp, typewriters to modern systems, she embraced new technology, attended courses and now teaches her successor.” PERSONAL RESILIENCE Beyond her professional life Swart has shown remarkable resilience while battling blood cancer with oral chemotherapy over the past two years, yet maintaining her commitment to work and community service. Her dedication to serving others spans decades, from Christian ministry and elderly care to supporting her husband’s distinguished police career until his retirement as colonel. Asked about her greatest achievement, Swart said that apart from a successful career her proudest accomplishment is being a “worthwhile” mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Daughter Lorna Quinn expressed pride in her mother’s achievements: “I am in awe. As a young girl I would accompany mom to work on Saturday mornings. In recent times I noticed she arrived at work around 06:30, puts the lights on and starts her day. She has such pride in her work. There is no cutting corners with my mother.” Reflecting on retirement she said: “We have left the choice with her about when to retire, trusting in her wisdom. She is a testament to navigating life’s storms with grace, faith and resilience.” When asked about her future plans, Swart said: “I simply want to experience and truly enjoy what it means to be retired.”

Carl Pophaim, die burgemeesterskomiteelid vir menslike nedersettings, het bevestig dat die informele nedersettings al byna 15 jaar bestaan, met ongeveer 34 strukture in Kanaal en 250 in Bloekombos. Albei nedersettings sal daarom chemiese toilette en krane ontvang. Maar die verligting dat hulle besig is om elektrisiteit te kry, kan op die inwoners se gesigte gesien word. “Sommige van my bure woon al dekades hier,” sê Shaheeda Ellis. “Hulle veg al langer as 20 jaar om elektrisiteit te kry.” Abrahams is verheug dat sy nie meer vir elektrisiteit van bure hoef te betaal nie. “Ek wou net die Vader en Sister Lee en die raadslid wat dit moontlik gemaak het, bedank,” sê sy. “Ek het nou onafhanklikheid oor my eie krag.” Ná die lang stryd is Alberts en McFarlane verlig dat hulle uiteindelik die wenstreep bereik het. “Ons het hoogte- en laagtepunte gehad, maar ons het die wenstreep bereik,” sê Alberts. Swift firefighting action saves properties The City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services confirmed that no property damage was incurred by a raging vegetation fire, which broke out along the R44 in Somerset West on Tuesday 9 December. According to spokesperson Jermaine Carelse, firefighters mobilised after the blaze was reported via emergency call around 14:40. He said crews from Strand and Somerset West fire stations as well as the Wildland Strike teams from Sir Lowry’s Pass were dispatched to the scene, where vegetation near Bakkerskloof Road was well alight, with nearby houses in the vicinity of Bell Aire under threat. “Two helicopters assisted with water-bombing the thick vegetation near the houses for about 20 minutes, from 15:20 to 15:40. Firefighters managed to protect the houses and extinguish the fire by 17:35,” he said. “No property was damaged and the cause [of the fire] is still undetermined.”

Five Kwezi Street homes in flames Residents scrambled with buckets of water as flames engulfed homes in Kwezi Street, Lwandle, on Thursday 11 December, displacing 10 people. Edward Bosch, spokesperson for the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Service, said an emergency call was received at 10:18, reporting a blaze at the corner of Broadlands and Albertyn roads in Strand. However, firefighters found the fire was actually in Kwezi Street, Lwandle. Three firefighting resources from Strand and Macassar fire stations responded to the scene, where informal structures were engulfed in flames.

When DistrictMail & Helderberg Gazette arrived, residents were still assisting firefighters. Some were even standing on top of burning structures, attempting to extinguish the flames as crowds of onlookers gathered. “Five structures were destroyed by the fire and two formal dwellings were partially damaged,” Bosch said. Ten people were displaced and all residents were accounted for, as no injuries or fatalities were reported. With the help of the community, fire crews extinguished the blaze by 12:15. The cause of the fire remains unknown and damage estimates are not yet available.

CPFs end 16 Days The event, which was held at Rusthof Primary School, drew representatives of CPF structures and policing precincts from around the province to show support for victims of violence. Organisers deliberately chose the Helderberg area because it is considered a hotspot for crimes against women and children. The strategy worked, with local community members fully embracing the event. Pastor Johannes Pick opened with a prayer, the Casablanca Royal Squad provided entertainment, and acting Strand CPF chairperson Lillian Albertyn delivered an inspirational message. Fransina Lukas, national and provincial CPF chairperson, used her keynote address to call for sustained action beyond the annual campaign.

“The pandemic has not been cured just because the 16 days campaign has officially stopped until next year. Therefore our commitment must be 365 days of relentless action and volunteerism,” she said. Lukas emphasised the need to fight crime not just with slogans but with sustained strategy, rooted in local CPF structures. “Collectively we dare not fail the victims who depend on us to be their voice and to act in their best interests.” The message of collective responsibility resonated throughout the event. Khayelitsha sub-district GBV coordinator Funeka Soldaat spoke about the event’s purpose, while representatives from Business Against Crime Western Cape, the provincial Department of Police Oversight and Community Safety, police and various NPOs gave messages of support. The event featured powerful personal testimonies from supporters advocating for victims and survivors sharing their own lived experiences, reinforcing Lukas’ call for year-round action.

Watch spreads festive cheer For the second consecutive year, the Victoria Park Neighbourhood Watch (VPNHW) in Somerset West has brought a wave of festive cheer and sweet relief to the learners and teachers of Gloria Botha School, hosting a special ice-cream outreach on Monday 8 December. The event, dubbed a success by all involved, saw the Sno Flo team arrive at the school to the delighted shouts of dozens of learners. Every child eagerly lined-up for a treat, receiving a generous cone filled with delicious strawberry-and-vanilla swirled soft-serve, topped with a crispy sprinkle. Adding a unique element of warmth and joy to the morning was Mumba, a friendly and gentle dog from the VPNHW family. He quickly became the star of the event, offering cuddles, playful licks and loving interaction to the excited learners. The children were also given the heartwarming opportunity to feed Mumba

specially-made dog-friendly ice cream from Sno Flo, a moment that proved to be a major hit with both teachers and leaners. The initiative was further supported by AM Security, one of VPNHW’s valued safety partners, with a representative attending to show solidarity and contribute to the warm atmosphere of community spirit. Representatives of Building Bridges, a violence-prevention mentoring programme, successfully hosted a celebratory hike of Constantia Nek on Saturday 6 December, providing children from challenging communities with a day of education, physical activity and safe exploration. The initiative, led by programme representative René Hendricks, saw the group trade the immediate risks of their home environments for the refreshing open air and rich history of the Constantia area. “The reason for the hike was mainly to get the kids out of these dangerous communities,” she said. “But it was also to educate them about our culture.”

Building Bridges is actively working within the Helderberg area, running its impactful violence-prevention programme at two key local hubs, St John’s Anglican church and Sir Lowry’s Pass Library. It focuses on mentoring and constructive engagement to steer youth away from negative influences. The outing served as an important component of this intervention strategy, emphasising holistic development beyond the classroom setting. The children not only enjoyed the physical challenge and natural beauty of the hike, but also participated in a cultural outing. The group also visited the museum in Constantia Nek, offering a valuable opportunity for cultural education and awareness.

Identikidz here again Families flocking to the Helderberg’s beautiful beaches at Gordon’s Bay, Strand and Harmony Park this festive season will benefit from the City of Cape Town’s popular Identikidz child-safety programme, which helps reunite hundreds of lost children with their families each holiday period. The City’s Community Services and Health Directorate will implement the programme, coordinated by the Community, Arts and Culture Development Department (CACD), at some of Cape Town’s busiest beaches this festive season. The concept is simple, but its impact is critical to ensuring children’s safety, with hundreds of reunions each season. Parents and caregivers can register children at participating beaches, where they receive an armband containing a unique serial number. Armband details are recorded alongside the caregiver’s information, enabling quick reunification if a child is separated from their group. “We are delighted that we can once again provide this important safety programme on our beautiful beaches and encourage parents to make use of the service,” said Francine Higham, Mayoral Committee member for Community Services and Health. “Identikidz adds value, but

caregivers are still responsible for ensuring their children are supervised at all times.” During the 2024 festive season, 133 730 children were tagged over five priority weekends, with 302 children safely reunited with their loved ones. It launched on Monday 15 and continued on Tuesday 16 December, running over 15 days from 09:00 until 18:30 on the following dates: Saturday 20, Sunday 21, Thursday 25, Friday 26, Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 December 2025; and Thursday 1, Saturday 3, Sunday 4, Saturday 10, Sunday 11, Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 January 2026. Apart from Gordon’s Bay, Harmony Park and Strand, other participating beaches are Big Bay, Camps Bay, Fish Hoek, Melkbosstrand, Milnerton, Mnandi, Monwabisi, Muizenberg, Sea Point and surrounding areas, Silwerstroom and Strandfontein. The service will be also available at Maiden’s Cove on Friday 26 December and Thursday 1 January. The CACD will deploy 53 officials and 159 Extended Public Works Programme staff members working with other City departments to register children, assist with reunification and work with provincial and police services to ensure safe reunions.

CNH coast footprint CNH Industrial and its brand CASE Construction Equipment officially launched the CNH Beach Care Project in South Africa on Friday 5 December, bringing its global environmental stewardship initiative to Strand’s Main Beach, with a commitment to long-term education and coastline protection. The South African debut marks the eighth country to adopt the project, which promotes hands-on clean-ups, environmental education and circularity practices. The launch event saw 150 children from Hendrik Louw Primary School and the DSSK (Die Straat Se Kind) organisation join educators, CNH volunteers and a host of respected environmental experts to restore and protect the coastline. Key activities included interactive educational sessions, a vital water safety talk and a live demonstration focused on the threats posed by microplastics. The highlight was a thorough beach clean-up where the collected waste was efficiently managed and removed using a CASE 695SV Backhoe Loader, showcasing the role of versatile machinery in environmental efforts. life’s importance, severe impacts of coastal pollution and behaviour change effects on healthy oceans. The project’s success relied heavily on collaboration with expert local organisations, including Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation, which provided expertise in essential marine education, Helderberg Ocean Awareness Movement (HOAM), which encouraged youth stewardship and promoted daily clean-up efforts, and the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), which shared critical water-safety guidance. The event also drew international expertise, including Dr Laura Pintore, a WWF Italy marine wildlife expert who assisted with the clean-up and educated learners on the effects of plastic pollution. Catherine Constan-

tinides, national director of Miss Earth South Africa, praised the partnership for driving meaningful environmental change. Johan Joubert, general manager of CNH Construction Segment South Africa, expressed pride in the initiative. “South Africa’s coastline is one of our greatest natural treasures,” he said. “Bringing the CNH Beach Care Project here is a proud moment for us. It allows us to contribute in a meaningful way to the long-standing work of the participating organisations in environmental education. Seeing young people take the lead today gives me great confidence in the future of our oceans.” Daniela Ropolo, head of CNH EMEA Sustainable Development Initiatives, stressed the long-term vision. “The most powerful investment we can make is in the next generation. The greatest value we can transmit is the consistency of our actions.” The project was presented to the Italian Consulate, which welcomed the initiative as part of its ongoing commitment to safeguarding South Africa’s coastal ecosystems. The successful launch marks a new chapter in the global CNH Beach Care Project, which promotes thriving ecosystems for generations to come.

Bad properties spoil The leafy suburbs that surround the central business districts (CBDs) of many cities and towns are known for their pristine maintained look and feel. But the opposite of these pristine suburban properties are dilapidated and poorly kept and maintained properties, often found in the CBD area of cities and towns. Among these dilapidated properties you will find surprisingly well-maintained properties. These properties have mostly been in generations of families, and they don’t have the extravagant allure of a leafy suburb property, but their owners go the extra mile to keep the property neat and well-maintained. But sadly, the rotten-apple property syndrome is hard to miss in these CBDs. There

seems to be a total lack of responsibility and pride among these owners to keep the most expensive item they will ever own in their lifetime up to the standard of the overall neighbourhood. If a complaint is lodged to the City of Cape Town, it states the municipality cannot take action against these negligent and careless property owners because these are private properties. But how do the responsible owners, who have to endure the unkempt and filthy properties next to them, take action against these negligent owners? Established 20 years ago in one of the members’ lounges as a haven for the elderly in their community, the Garden Village Service Centre now operates out of a Community Hall in Somerset West. Its members include individuals over 60 years old, with the oldest member being 94 years old. Through a variety of physical activities, opportunities for social connection, and a welcoming space to share concerns, the Service Centre helps older persons build confidence in their physical and mental abilities. What were the highlights of 2025? JANUARY The first month marked significant developments across multiple sectors in the Helderberg basin. The month celebrated major infrastructure milestones with the highly-anticipated reopening of the Strand indoor pool and the establishment of a new school in Lwandle, both representing crucial investments in community facilities and education. Safety remained a paramount concern as the Identikidz child-safety programme returned to busy coastal areas including Gordon’s Bay, Strand and Harmony Park, while ongoing safety issues such as the cleanliness of the waters at Strand Beach required continuous attention. The month was not without its tragedies – a fatal truck accident on the N2 and devastating infernos that erupted in various corners of Strand, destroying several homes, residents having to rebuild lives. Causes for celebration in the first month of the year included the achievements of the matric class of 2024 and festive-season newborns. Sports enthusiasts celebrated the restart of club cricket. FEBRUARY February brought news of upmarket-development plans for Beach Road, Gordon’s Bay and a proposed new high school for Somerset West, while infrastructure improvements continued with Trappies-pipeline works tackling ongoing sewer problems. There were heartwarming stories such as the return of Somerset West resident Maggie de Gouveia’s lost wallet by Mediclinic’s Simphiwe Ncindelo and the Helderberg Baby Saver celebrating its 14th safely-abandoned baby. Tragedy struck too with the devastating loss of beloved teacher Ronel Swanepoel in a Somerset West house fire. February also highlighted social challenges such as vulnerable elderly facing “inhumane, undignified” treatment during the Sassa social-grant agency migration process. Sport achievements saw a historic 10s tournament and Somerset Rugby Board legends honoured. Culturally, local beauties competed in the Mrs South Africa pageant and upand-coming rap artist Saarah the Lyrical Activist inspired with new releases. MARCH The Helderberg was in for rapid expansion, with 697 land-use applications processed in 2024, with developments such as the proposed Tsogo Sun Casino, Willowbrook Lodge, residential complexes at Goldman Road, Dorhill and Precinct 2 at Paardevlei, and luxury apartments at 43 Beach Road, Gordon’s Bay, facing strong infrastructure- and environment-related resistance. Nevertheless, the City of Cape Town pushed forward with the housing demand, investing more than R600 million in regional infrastructure while requiring developers to pay development charges and

contribute to upgrades. The doors of the newly rebuilt False Bay Primary School were officially opened with an inauguration ceremony held in the Macassar school hall, a measure of the school’s long-awaited brick-and-mortar realisation. The spotlight was placed on the Soet River Canal, which continues to plague Strand residents who bemoaned swarms of biting insects, yet another symptom of frustration and fear of further health hazards in light of the water resource’s stagnant and appalling state. Somerset West welcomed the opening of the Khethani Women’s Wellness Centre as an extension to the Helderberg Baby Saver to support women and girls facing crisis pregnancies as a fitting tribute to International Women’s Day. A 34-year-old female municipal worker was hospitalised and transferred to intensive care after accidentally hitting a beehive during a lawn-mowing operation in Somerset West’s Rome Glen area, causing a swarm of bees to attack her and nine colleagues while mowing in the area. The woman suffered severe stings all over her body, including inside her mouth, during the incident. Five-year-old Deidré Wagenaar became her little brother’s hero by donating bone marrow to four-year-old Duane on 10 March, after he was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in 2021 and experienced a relapse in August 2024, with the brave sister serving as a 100% compatible donor despite her young age and fears about medical procedures. APRIL April was dominated by the death of prominent businessman Jack van der Spuy (71) apparently in a fire at his Somerset West residence. An investigation revealed he had died before the fire started, and two suspects were arrested in Paarl for murder, arson and theft. The community of Gustrouw in Strand was further rocked by the arrest of two brothers accused of repeatedly raping a nine-year-old girl, which saw women rally behind the victim’s family demanding justice. Emergency services successfully contained a 400-ha wildfire near Steenbras Dam outside Gordon’s Bay, preventing infrastructure damage. Public safety remained a priority as the City’s Traffic Services stopped 512 trucks over two days to address complaints that heavy vehicles were bypassing the N2 weighbridge in Somerset West. Despite these challenges, April brought tremendous celebration as Blitzbok star Gino Cupido returned home for community celebrations. Multiple Easter festivities and the Rusthof Methodist church’s 175th anniversary celebration demonstrated enduring community spirit. MAY May brought significant developments

across the basin, with the month’s most captivating story being a massive male elephant seal’s unexpected visit to Gordon’s Bay that drew attention from across Cape Town, South Africa and the world. The wandering marine giant, dubbed “Gordy”, created a memorable community spectacle as residents gathered to witness the rare sighting. However, the month of May also presented serious challenges in the area, with illegal squatting along the N2 near Somerset Mall creating unsanitary conditions and health concerns. The crisis proved legally complex, with land ownership under the provincial education department complicating eviction procedures. A contentious development proposal for the historic Somerset Lodge received a mixed appeal decision, with authorities approving guesthouse restriction removal, but rejecting density and height proposals after residents’ fierce opposition. Criminal activity made headlines when a father-daughter duo’s high-speed pursuit ended dramatically as their vehicle overturned during a police chase, leaving both hospitalised. The month equally celebrated remarkable community achievements. Pamella Dzindikwa of Puglia Cheese won Agri-Expo’s prestigious Hollard Game Changer Award, bringing national recognition to local dairy excellence. The community rallied behind Gordon’s Bay resident Keanou Rasool’s (30) appeal for help with a severe keloid disorder, while Huis Soeterus celebrated its 75th anniversary through its “75 Good Deeds” initiative. JUNE June ushered in winter and the midpoint of the year, but also escalating taxi violence. The dispute between Codeta and Cata over the Somerset West route turned deadly with the death of taxi driver Luthando Zophela (36). Public-safety fears intensified when five armed gang members threatened Rusthof Primary School principal Ikraam Wentzel on school grounds, forcing staff to lock learners in bathrooms for protection. The fatal stabbing of Keeghan Noble (28), a father of three, in Macassar further highlighted escalating violence across neighbourhoods. Governance issues sent shockwaves through Gordon’s Bay when it emerged the Gordon’s Bay Residents Association had not held an annual general meeting for five years. Infrastructure problems compounded concerns as the Gordon’s Bay Bowling Club endured a month without electricity due to municipal-debt disputes. However, the month also celebrated significant milestones. Helderberg Hospice marked its 40th anniversary with a fundraising high tea, demonstrating four decades of compassionate care. Educational excellence was recognised as

teachers across the basin received awards at the Metro East Education District’s National Teaching Awards, highlighting the region’s commitment to educational quality amid challenging times. JULY July started off with consistent winter rains. While there were no serious incidents reported initially, minor flooding occurred in several areas, including Lwandle, Macassar, Strand and Gordon’s Bay. Specific trouble spots included Faure Marine Drive, parts of Beach Road in Strand, and the Reunion Drive area in Somerset West. The month was special for Strand Rugby Club who celebrated its 90th anniversary at the Strand Town Hall. The club, founded in 1935 by the Khan brothers with a vision for community unity, celebrated nine decades of rugby success. It has evolved from an amateur club into a partially professional institution. Other highlights in July include a tragic fatal house fire in Asanda Village in the early hours of Sunday 13 July, which claimed the lives of an adult male and an infant baby girl and a dramatic rescue in the Somerset West CBD on Monday 28 July. Emergency services had to use the “jaws of life” to free a trapped driver following an accident. The community of Sir Lowry’s Pass erupted in spontaneous celebration on Saturday 26 July to welcome home their rugby hero, Gino Cupido. AUGUST An elderly woman was dramatically rescued on Saturday 2 August along the scenic Clarence Drive (R44) just outside Gordon’s Bay, after she had apparently deliberately driven her car off the road. The Strand community was shocked when a prominent community leader and member of the local community-policing forum (CPF) was arrested on Wednesday 6 August by Gordon’s Bay police on multiple charges related to sexual offences involving a minor. The Boland Islamic Council’s Women’s League hosted a high tea featuring a New York “Gatsby glamour” theme. Contestants and those attending channelled their “roaring-’20s fashionistas”, adding glitz to the Dr GJ Joubert Primary School hall. Residents of the Beverly Hills informal settlement in Strand protested on Monday 18 August in Onverwacht Street over what they deemed inadequate service delivery and housing issues, including demands for the installation of electricity. Taxi violence erupted on Tuesday 26 August, claiming two lives and injuring three others in separate incidents, just one day after the City appealed for calm. At the Macassar Heights taxi pick-up point, two armed men opened fire around 06:15, fatally wounding a 55-year-old local resident and a 54-year-old taxi driver from the Lwandle area. Two other victims, including a female bystander, were

hospitalised with gunshot wounds. The motive is believed to be related to ongoing conflict between taxi associations (Cata and Codeta). In a separate event a 34-year-old female scholar-transport driver was wounded in a shooting while driving in Onverwacht Road.

A community treasure, the Somerset West Library, celebratied 60 years in its Victoria Street building while maintaining its status as one of Cape Town’s top-performing libraries. However, the month was overshadowed by a series of devastating tragedies that shook the community. Three fatalities occurred within a week, starting with two deaths on 6 October – a Malawian national found hanging from an electric tower and gun shop manager Nathan Penwarden shot at Somerset Mall – followed by the train death of Oscar de Lange on 13 October after witnesses reportedly saw him step into the path of an oncoming train near School Street. The month’s darkest moments came with the disturbing discovery of two infant deaths in Strand, prompting urgent calls for enhanced crisis pregnancy support and highlighting the critical importance of the Helderberg Baby Saver facility, which has provided safe relinquishment for 16 babies since 2014. At the end of month, on 28 October, 43-year-old Nicolette Overbeek was fatally shot in her vehicle outside her Somerset West home off Winery Road.

SEPTEMBER The month started with reason to celebrate as Gordon’s Bay local Roger Sedres won the coveted Sports Visual Journalist of the Year award at the 2025 South African Sport Awards. Also, a young man from Strand’s ambition to make his parents proud propelled him into the Mail & Guardian’s list of Top 200 Young South Africans. Zaid Railoun (34), a resident of Rusthof, was recognised for his work at the “intersection” of finance and conservation. Helderberg residents and stakeholders launched a petition against the City’s proposed Geelsloot flood-alleviation project in Somerset West. While residents shared their support for the proposed flood mitigation, they strongly objected to the project proceeding until the severe, long-standing problem of raw sewage pollution in the Geelsloot, which has been occurring since 2018, is resolved. DECEMBER As the Helderberg entered December with the year drawing to an end and Christmas approaching, more than 200 residents of the Ethembeni informal settlement were left homeless after a fire destroyed 100 homes, leaving three injured and one dead. With the festive season underway, Strand Beach’s closure for seawall construction drew attention as the month-long closure during peak holiday season formed part of phase 2 of a major coastal-protection project. Businesses expressed concern about the impact on holiday trade. The sewage-infrastructure crisis also affected multiple locations, highlighting health risks, recurring blockages and complaints. However, the month also marked significant developments. Somerset Mall unveiled its major expansion, while the spirit of giving flourished through the Nosh for Josh Christmas Initiative, which provided 4 000 festive gift boxes for neurodiverse and underprivileged children. Environmental action also took centre stage as hundreds of volunteers removed 4 000 waste bags from the Soet River as part of World Rivers Day celebrations.

NOVEMBER Another month of ups and downs. Special treat for grans The spirit of Christmas arrived early for 10 beloved local residents as the staff of Strand Clinic hosted their annual “Adopt a Grandma” Christmas Lunch campaign on Wednesday 10 December. The heartwarming tradition, started by the clinic staff, aims to foster community support and well-being for elderly women who regularly visit the facility. The joyous event took place at Friedman & Cohen in Strand, which generously provided the venue and delicious meals. The “Adopt a Grandma” initiative focuses on 10 adopted elderly women, ensuring they receive love and attention during the festive season. Christmas came early for 50 elderly residents in Lourensia Park, Somerset West, when SA Society of Hope hosted a festive lunch on Friday 5 December. The event, held at 6 Klasie Johannes Street, was filled with laughter, smiles and Christmas cheer as those attending it enjoyed a hearty lunch, dessert and Christmas cake. Sandy Pekeur-Sandy, founder of SA Society of Hope, said the Christmas lunch formed part of the non-profit organisation’s monthly programme for its seniors’ club, launched earlier this year. Beyond the festive meal, residents received vegetables for Christmas, a Rise Against Hunger package and a Christmas box from Nosh for Josh. The initiative reflected the SA Society of Hope’s ongoing commitment to supporting elderly members of the Somerset West community.

In a heartwarming display of community spirit, members of the Somerset West Police Station embarked on a mission to spread joy and comfort to those in need. In October, officers partnered with a local florist to visit various organisations, including Helderberg Hospice and several elderly care facilities, distributing 1 000 roses to residents and patients. The beautiful gesture, which took place during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, brought tears of joy to many faces. The roses were generously donated by a local florist who was inspired to give back to the community in memory of family members who had battled cancer. Despite the race against time in the day’s heat, which caused some flowers to wilt, the thought and love behind the gesture remained unwavering. The police officers were warmly received at each facility, bringing smiles and cheer to those who needed it most. The florist’s act of kindness serves as a testament to the power of compassion and the profound impact one person can have on an entire community.

Die Hoërskool Zandvliet het die 66-jarige, wat vier generasies van die gemeenskap se kinders opgevoed het, met ’n verrassing-afskeidsmiddagete bedank. Sy is onkant betrap en oorweldig deur die liefde van haar kollegas toe hulle haar in aftrede begelei het. “Ouderdom speel ’n rol in besluitneming en ek dink nou is die regte tyd om vaarwel te sê,” sê Coetzee.

Haar pad na onderwys het op ’n plaas in Oak Valley begin, waar die Grabouw-boorling grootgeword het. Ná matriek aan die Hoërskool Gordon het sy die Hewat-onderwysersopleidingskollege bygewoon. “Destyds was daar slegs twee beroepe – onderwys óf verpleging – en ek het onderwys gekies,” onthou Coetzee. Gala dinner caps off successful year Hope and Light Community Welfare NPC celebrated its 21st anniversary in style on Saturday 6 December, with a successful fundraising gala dinner aimed at supporting its vital work within its Children’s Village, an early childhood development (ECD) centre and school. Held in the school hall, the milestone event saw nearly 80 guests, including loyal supporters from Germany, who were treated to a sophisticated evening featuring a three-course sit-down dinner and professional entertainment. The atmosphere was set by Ashley Scott, a professional musical theatre performer with experience on stages including the popular Artscape Theatre and venues in Johannesburg, ensuring a memorable evening for all those attending. The gala dinner was the culmination of a year-long celebration and succeeded in raising crucial funds for the NPC’s operational costs and 2026 needs list. “Our aim was 100 guests, and this was the first time we had an event of this nature, so to have received such a response from guests and sponsors was very encouraging,” a representative of the organisation noted. Wine adventures at new-look Cellar Door Avontuur Estate has opened its newly upgraded Cellar Door, featuring a redesigned tasting room that accommodates up to 70 guests with panoramic views of Table Mountain and rolling vineyards. The refreshed wine boutique combines contemporary styling with indoor-outdoor flow, set against the backdrop of the Helderberg Mountain slopes with views extending across False Bay. The space features a natural vine canopy and overlooks surrounding farmland. Visitors can experience three signature tastings: The Taberer Family Reserve (R150); The Avontuur Collection (R145 for three wines); and The Thoroughbred Collection (R145 for four wines).

Each tasting is guided by estate staff who share the winery’s heritage and winemaking process. The estate continues its premium wine production shaped by Helderberg terroir, while also offering accommodation at the renovated Avontuur Manor House with nine suites, multiple lounges, pool facilities and event venues. The Manor House and Barrel Cellar host weddings, corporate functions and private events coordinated by WarrenStone Weddings & Events. Operating hours until 11 January are Sunday to Thursday from 10:00 to 18:00 and 10:00 to 20:00 on Friday and Saturday. The 4 226 m² facility can accommodate over 2 million bottles, providing expanded storage and creating a centralised hub for distribution, logistics and quality control. The layout includes an 890 m² tractor facility and 150 m² maintenance workshop to support vineyard operations. Designed and constructed by NK Construction, the project was delivered in seven months. Aligned with Vergelegen’s sustainability principles, the building incorporated reused materials sourced from the farm, including steel and paving. The location near the hilltop winery was selected to minimise visual and environmental impact. Strategically positioned out of sight and sheltered from prevailing winds, the warehouse blends seamlessly among vineyards and trees. Managing director Wayne Coetzer says this investment demonstrates the estate’s ongoing commitment to world-class wine quality. Vergelegen initiated significant development

after being purchased in 1987, with new vineyards planted following soil and climatic tests. The multi-level winery opened in 1992 by Baron Eric de Rothschild of Château Lafite, with the first vintage gaining local and international recognition. “Having our own warehouse gives us flexibility to tailor operations to our specific needs,” said Coetzer. “We can design workflows suited to our product range and business model. Controlling inventory allows real-time stock tracking, reduces shrinkage and improves customer service delivery through faster, more accurate order fulfilment.” While the initial investment was significant, Coetzer notes that owning the warehouse will reduce long-term costs by

avoiding third-party storage fees and generating revenue through streamlined operations. Winemaker Luke O’Cuinneagain added: “The warehouse gives us full control of our production chain and reinforces our commitment to uncompromising quality.” Minister of Agriculture John Steenhuizen commented that the facility showed confidence in the South African wine industry. “Following CapeWine 2025, the new Vergelegen facility signals that South African wine is ready for the international premium market. Pirates ‘steal’ a win The Helderberg Pirates under-15 baseball team capped off a roller-coaster first half of the 2025-’26 season by claiming the Eastern Conference title in the most dramatic way possible, clinching a nail-biting 11-10 victory over rivals, the Kuils River Cardinals. Entering the final weekend of the half-season, the stakes couldn’t have been higher. Trailing Cardinals 12-13 on the log, the equation for Pirates was simple: win, or finish second. In true Pirates fashion, the team dug deep under pressure, edging their rivals in a high-scoring thriller to secure the top spot in a competitive conference that also features the Khayelitsha Giants and Westridge Yankees. The title victory completes a remarkable turnaround for a squad that experienced the highest of highs and lowest of lows over the past few months. Pirates opened their campaign on 11 October with a confident 10-5 win over Giants, fuelled by 10 walks and seven stolen bases. Key hits by Christopher Venter, Cameron Leah and Chris Smith set the tone for the season. They followed this up with an 11-5 victory over Yankees on 18 October, a game defined by a five-run first inning and a dominant bullpen performance that racked up 10 strikeouts. THE PLAYGROUND: WHERE TO FISH ALONG STRUISBAAI HARBOUR WALL A favourite for holidaymakers, the harbour wall produces elf, garrick, blacktail, galjoen in season, spotted grunter and – with the right tide – respectable cob. The harbour basin holds shoals of baitfish, drawing predators close enough for light tackle spinning or bait angling. It’s also the safest launch point for ski-boats moving to offshore grounds and a great place to take youngsters to teach them the ways of rock and surf angling – just like our oupas and dads did for us.

THE PLAAT: BETWEEN STRUISBAAI AND DE MOND This is surf-fishing heaven. Long sandy stretches, deep gutters and rolling sandbanks make it prime territory for kob (kabeljou), white steenbras, belman, and a variety of other species like big galjoen, grunter and stumpnose. Dawn, dusk and night sessions often see the bigger cob patrolling close in. Reading the water – finding a deeper gully or a rip – is the difference between going home empty-handed or fighting a bus-cob in the dark. This beach also hosts many rock and surf comps. Guys also target huge raggies, bronze whaler, the big duckbills and black rays which frequent this area. A big bloody bait or live mullet is deadly.

Rugby Reloaded ready for kick-off The inaugural Rugby Reloaded Tournament 2026 is rapidly taking shape, promising an explosive, high-intensity start to the pre-season calendar. On 22 November, they stormed back from a 5-1 deficit to defeat Giants 12-5, behind a spectacular batting display from Leah and scoreless relief pitching from Smith.

Resilience was the theme again on 29 November, when Ryan van Niekerk blasted a three-run homer to help salvage an 8-8 draw against Yankees. The team then set up the title decider with a clinical 11-5 win over Cardinals on 6 December, where Van Niekerk and Cunnington both went three-for-three at the plate. That win set the stage for the final, decisive clash. In a tense showdown, Pirates edged Cardinals 11-10, completing the comeback on the scoreboard and standings. Pirates enter the second half of the season as conference champions, playing their best when it matters.

ARNISTON / WAENHUISKRANS AND LEDGES Arniston’s rocky shoreline, sandstone caves and kelp-fringed ledges – often loosely referred to by locals as the “Mont Arniston side” – create perfect ambush structure. Cob and shad run through here, with early-morning spinning for yellowtail a known producer when the sea is clean and green-blue. The Otta area and the gullies east of the Arniston Hotel are classic summer rock-and-surf marks.

ROCK AND SURF TACTICS FOR SUMMER SUCCESS

For cob: Whole chokka, chokka-sardine, live mullet and a variety of lures. Live mullet: Use a long fluorocarbon leader (0,65 to 0,80 mm) a 6/0 or 8/0 hook and get that mullet into a working gutter or hole close to shore. For steenbras: Light, fresh white mussel or bloodworm, prawn, and so forth fished on a low-profile trace. Look for shallow banks where the waves lift and stir the sand. For elf or shad: Early-morning spinning with spoons or small plugs works well, especially around the harbour, Arniston reef and the rocky points at Suiderstrand.

West of Struisbaai, the broken reef and shallow points offer pockets for blacktail zebra, musselcracker and the occasional yellowtail when warm currents press tight to the reefs. Strong tackle, abrasion-resistant

productive inshore and offshore grounds. Inshore (5 to 20 m): Roman, red stumpnose, garrick and summer shoals of elf. Deep reefs: Yellowtail, bonito, all red steenbras and marlin. Offshore banks: When conditions align, gamefish like longfin tuna and yellowfin push within reach of local charters – a summertime bonus. Drifting over reef patches with soft plastics or slow-pitch jigs has become increasingly effective and keeps by-catch mortality low.

CATCH AND RELEASE, ESPECIALLY FOR BIG COB Struisbaai and Arniston are famous for producing massive cob in summer – fish well over a metre long. These big breeders are critical to sustaining populations. If you hook one: – use circle hooks to avoid gut-hooking; – keep the fish in the water for unhooking if possible; – support the belly: never hang a big cob vertically; – limit air exposure to under 20 seconds; and – revive by facing the fish into the current until it kicks away strongly. Returning even one big breeder dramatically improves local stocks and ensures future holiday seasons stay productive.

FINAL WORD Struisbaai offers a rare combination: safe harbour, long surf, technical reefs and offshore variety all within a short drive of Arniston’s rugged sandstone coast. Whether you prefer working lures for yellowtail, fishing with big live baits for monster cob, or drifting reefs from a boat, the region has something for every angler. De Mond is a beautiful area to fish and explore with the family. It offers a safe estuary where one can target leeries, grunter and cob. The coastal charm of Kleinmond provided the perfect backdrop this past weekend as the second leg of the Hot Summer of Touch delivered a masterclass in high-octane rugby and competitive spirit. Under clear summer skies, 39 teams took to the sand, showcasing a standard of play that left spectators and rivals alike in awe. The day was defined by major upsets and a shifting leaderboard, proving that in this series, no title is safe. The Pro Series narrative took an unexpected turn early in the day. The victors of the opening leg in Camps Bay, UD Targo, suffered a shock exit at the hands of a relentless Score Forward Reds side during the qualifiers. This opened a massive window of opportunity for the remaining contenders. Most Wanted battled their way to the final to face off against Liberty Webb Touch. In a match characterised by elite technical skill and sportsmanship, Liberty Webb emerged victorious. The win not only secured them the Kleinmond title,

but also propelled them to the top of the overall series leaderboard. The Challenger Series was equally unpredictable. BT Blizzards, looking for a back-to-back win after their success at Camps Bay, fell just short in a narrow defeat to a determined Scorpions outfit. The Scorpions proved to be the team of the hour, doubling down on their success by clinching victory in the Pro/ Challenger crossover fixture against the Unknown Warriors. The talent pool ran deep across all age groups. In the Open Series, The Jokers were crowned champions after a hard-fought battle against a spirited T10 Crusaders team. In the Junior Section, the Dark Knights dominated their bracket, securing an impressive win over the Struisbaai Warriors Juniors. The series shows no signs of slowing down as attention shifted to the third leg in Strand yesterday (Tuesday 16 December).  Pre-register for the remaining rounds can be done online at www.hotsummeroftouch.co.za.

espite a rain-delayed start and a damp pitch, Strand Cricket Club (SCC) secured a dominant victory over Macassar CC (MCC) in a First Division D derby at Riverside Park on Saturday 13 December. Moisture on the pitch forced officials to delay the start until 13:00, resulting in the match being reduced to 35 overs per side. SCC won a crucial toss and, assessing the tricky conditions, elected to field first – a decision that paid immediate dividends. Strand’s openers exploited the conditions perfectly, maintaining disciplined lines and lengths that kept the home side’s batsmen under constant pressure. Added to this, the ground fielding was sharp, providing the necessary support to a bowling unit led by two seasoned veterans. The standout performer of the day was Adeeb Bailey, who dismantled the MCC top and middle order. Bailey finished with the remarkable figures of 5/13, a five-wicket haul that effectively ended any hopes of a large total. He was well-supported by Ricardo Naidoo, who kept things tight at the other end, finishing with figures of 2/26. Under the relentless pressure, the hosts were eventually bundled out for a mere 89 runs. Following a shortened lunch break, SCC took to the crease knowing that a quick chase could secure a valuable bonus point. However, Macassar’s skipper, Robin Pretorius, put up a spirited defense. Bowling with aggression and precision, Pretorius threatened to derail the chase, finishing with impressive figures of 4/19. Despite the wickets falling at the other end, Strand’s Winston Isaacs remained the anchor the team needed, delivering a calculated innings of 31 runs, steering the

side through the difficult spells and ensuring the target was reached and leading his team to a four-wicket victory. In First Division A, Hottentots Holland Cricket Club (HHCC) traveled to Rosmead to face Primrose CC in their final fixture before the mid-season break. Due to a wet pitch, the game was reduced to 44 overs. The hosts won the toss and sent HHCC in to bat. HHCC were going along comfortably on 77/3 before a flurry of wickets fell and they were eventually bowled out for 120 runs. Captain Fuad Behardien (37) was the top scorer. In reply HHCC started like a house on fire, bagging two wickets in the first five overs and leaving Primrose on 8/2. A partnership was built and that took the home team to a comfortable seven-wicket victory. In First Division C, Helderberg CC (HCC) narrowly escaped with a two-run victory over Blue Downs CC in a match reduced to 20 overs. After winning the toss and electing to field, Blue Downs CC initially looked to have the upperhand, but HCC opener Chalynn Hess (60*) proved to be the immovable object the home side needed. HCC managed to post a competitive 117/5. Blue Downs finished their 20 overs on 115/7.
