Water safety reinforced
The City of Cape Town is emphasising beach safety for the rest of the holiday season after recording 19 near-fatal and four fatal drownings since the start of December. One fatality occurred along the local shoreline on New Year’s Day (Thursday 1 January), when a 38-year-old man from Elsies River drowned. According to the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), rescue crews stationed at their satellite station at Strand Beach were approached by a woman reporting a drowning in progress around 09:35. However, she could not specify the exact location of the incident. NSRI Gordon’s Bay crew immediately alerted City lifeguards and activated the City’s water rescue network. The NSRI Emergency Operations Centre reviewed CCTV footage while lifeguards and NSRI launched rescue craft and initiated a
New Year’s Day drowning at Strand Beach comprehensive beach search. Shortly after the search began, the man was found floating lifeless in the surf zone. Lifeguards immediately recovered him and began CPR with NSRI assistance. Multiple emergency services responded, including the provincial government’s Health EMS, various ambulance services, City Fire and Rescue Service, Law Enforcement and police. Despite extensive resuscitation efforts, paramedics declared the man dead at the scene. Police have opened an inquest docket and the NSRI extended condolences to the family. DistrictMail & Helderberg Gazette contacted a relative of the deceased for comment, but attempts to gain comment
from the family were unsuccessful. Excluding the local tragedy, lifeguards have responded to 33 water rescues, 39 first-aid incidents, 18 anti-social behaviuor incidents at beaches, along with two first-aid incidents at municipal swimming pools. The City’s Identikidz Programme has registered 55 075 children by December month-end and reunited 78 with caregivers, with Strand among the three beaches recording the highest registrations. The programme will continue to run at three local beaches – Gordon’s Bay, Harmony Park and Strand – from 09:00 until 18:30 on Saturday 10, Sunday 11, Saturday 17, and Sunday 18 January. SLP’s united front with new collab
Community-led activism is taking hold in the heart of Sir Lowry’s Pass, where the newly formed Sir Lowry’s Pass Village Constructive Solutions Group (SLPVCSG) officially launched in December, signalling a united front against exploitation and a bold step toward sustainable local development. The coalition brings together influential local organisations, including the Helderberg Disability Infrastructure Network and the Fatherhood Empowerment Initiative. Their collective mission is to ensure that all funding and resources intended for the village reach the residents directly, fostering an environment of transparency while eradicating the exploitation of the community’s needs for outside gain. The group’s impact was immediately felt during a distribution event held at the Ou Tappie on Tuesday 16 December. The proposed centre further aims to address the needs of the youth through a trade school for school dropouts. Health remains a cornerstone of the vision, with plans for a dental facility that has already garnered the backing of the provincial Department of Health and Wellness and the University of the Western Cape’s Department of Oral Dentistry. The formation of the SLPVCSG marks a turning point for the village, moving away from fragmented aid and toward a model of constructive, self-led solutions. According to secretary Riaan Hendricks, the group remains firmly committed to making the village a better place for all residents.

Stork delivers special joy ’tis season The festive season in the Western Cape has been blessed with the most precious gifts imaginable – the arrival of newborns who chose this special time to make their entrance into the world. From Christmas Day to New Year’s Day, public health facilities across the province have been filled with the joyful sounds of first cries and the beaming smiles of new parents. Among the most heartwarming moments was at Helderberg Hospital in Somerset West, where the very first Christmas baby of 2025 arrived. At the stroke of midnight on Thursday 25 December, little baby Silo made her debut, born to mother Zizibele Silo. This beautiful baby girl, weighing 3,5 kg, became a living symbol of hope and renewal during the season of joy. The dedicated staff at Helderberg Hospital were there to welcome baby Silo’s much-anticipated arrival at 00:00, ensuring that both mother and child received the exceptional care they deserved. Baby Silo was among 171 precious newborns – 80 boys and 91 girls – who to made their debut at Western Cape public health facilities on Christmas Day. The second baby girl was born at 00:04 at Khayelitsha District Hospital to mother Alena Nkayi, weighing 2,1 kg. The third baby, another baby girl, was born at 00:18 at Worcester Hospital to mother Enid Asjan. Two sets of twins were also born at Tygerberg Hospital. Die 60-jarige het sy uniform vir die laaste keer uitgetrek en Woensdag 31 Desember met aftrede gegaan, wat ’n loopbaan afgesluit het wat daarop gemik was om die gaping tussen die polisie en die gemeenskappe wat hy bedien het, te oorbrug. “Ek wou die persepsie van wat dit beteken om ’n polisieman te wees verander,” sê Beukes. “As ’n polisieman kan jy nie net die wet afdwing nie, jy moet dikwels ’n onderwyser, ’n dominee en ’n maatskaplike werker wees.” Hierdie filosofie is reeds tydens sy jeug in Strand en sy betrokkenheid by brigades gevorm, waar dissipline en respek vir die uniform sy inspirasie van stapel getuur het. Sy eerste poging om by die Veiligheidspolisie aan te sluit het weens vrese oor die apartheidsregime misluk, wat hom ’n posisie as klerk by die Strand-munisipaliteit aanvaar het. In 1988 het hy uiteindelik as studentekonstabel by die Macassar-polisiekantoor begin, waar hy vir ses maande praktykervaring opgedoen het voordat hy na die polisiekollege in Bishop Lavis gegaan

Sy brigadeopleiding het hier goed te pas gekom: “Ek was altyd die proefkonyn wat altyd moes lei om vir die res van die ouens te wys hoe om te dril.” Na voltooiing van sy opleiding moes Beukes na Johannesburg gaan, maar weens sy ma se swak gesondheid het hy in Kaapstad gebly. Hy het by die spesiale wageenheid aangesluit waar hy sekuriteit vir ministers verskaf het. Dié ervaring het sy vaardighede met kommunikasie en professionaliteit verfyn. Ná twee jaar is hy na die Gordonsbaai-polisiekantoor oorgeplaas waar sy ware roeping sou ontvou. Dit was by Gordonsbaai vanaf 1991 waar Beukes sy nalatenskap gebou het. Terwyl kollegas hom gespot het oor kommunikasiekursusse, het hy homself ontwikkel as sosiale misdaadvoorkomingskoördineerder en sy benadering tot gemeenskapspolisiëring verfyn. “In daardie dae het die polisie ’n baie ferm benadering gehad – ons was as ’n polisiemag beskou en nou is ons ’n diens,” verduidelik hy. Van 1991 tot 2015 het hy projekte soos Hearts of Men in die plaaslike gemeenskap gevestig, waar hy onvermoeid met mans en seuns gewerk het om positiewe manlike identiteit en verantwoordelike leierskap te bevorder. Hier het sy vaderfiguur-benadering tot misdaadbekamping ontwikkel. “Ek het gevoel dat ek ’n vaderfiguur is waar ek vir hulle aandag kon sodat hulle kon weet dat ek werklik vir hulle omgee, alhoewel ek geweet het dat hul dade verkeerd was,” verduidelik hy. lewer. Misdadigers het respek vir hom ontwikkel: “Hulle het my altyd bedank dat ek nie vir hulle gevloek het nie en vir die manier waarop ek met hulle gepraat het.” Kapt. Vanessa Daniels wat saam met Beukes by Gordonsbaai gewerk het, bevestig sy karakter: “Hy het dieselfde gebly deur homself met waardigheid te dra en ’n hand te leen waar hy kon.” Ná 24 jaar by Gordonsbaai het hy in 2015 uit die polisie bedank om sy eie onderneming te begin. Die pa van vyf seuns erken dat sy toewyding ’n prys geverg het: “Dit was ook moeilik om die balans te handhaaf – iets moet êrens ontbreek wat later moeilikhede sal veroorsaak.” Ná vier jaar het hy egter teruggekeer na die polisiediens teruggekeer en is by die Strand-polisiekantoor gestasioneer. Die plasing in sy tuisdorp het vrugte afgewerp, want sy reputasie het hom vooruitgegaan. Kol. Jacqui Johnson, Strand-stasiebevelvoerder, beskryf Beukes se impak: “Toe ek hom vir die eerste keer ontmoet het was sy voorkoms netjies en dít sê baie. Hy was definitief ’n gemeenskapspersoon – hy was in elke gebied betrokke.” Johnson verduidelik dat Beukes se vermoë om verhoudings te bou die polisie
grootliks bevoordeel het, veral tydens ’n tyd van openbare persepsiekrisisse. “Maar terselfdertyd is ons ook bly om hom te kan laat gaan, omdat hy sy deel gedoen het,” voeg sy by. Ná ses jaar in Strand het die tyd vir aftrede aangebreek. “Fisies voel ek asof ek nog vyf jaar kan gewerk het, maar ek het vrede gemaak dat dit my tyd is en ek voel ek het aan die gemeenskap gegee wat dit nodig het,” sê Beukes. Aftrede ná 33 jaar beteken nie die einde van sy gemeenskapswerk nie – dit gun hom wel meer tyd met sy vrou Marcellin en twee kleinkinders. “Sy reputasie het my in die wolke omdat ons nie meer goeie dinge oor mense hoor nie; as sy vrou is dit ’n riem onder die hart,” sê Marcellin. Terwyl Strand afskeid neem van ’n pilaar van die gemeenskap, bly Beukes beskikbaar vir diegene wat steeds sy hulp soek. “Ek sal die mense mis, veral die WhatsApp-groepe, en om te kan help.” Dis ’n gepaste einde vir iemand wat bewys het dat polisiewerk veel meer is as net wetafdwinging – dit gaan oor diens, omgee en die bou van vertrouensverhoudings wat gemeenskappe transformeer.

A sombre atmosphere hung over the R102 on the morning of Tuesday 23 December, as a group of Sixty60 delivery drivers gathered at the scene where one of their colleagues lost his life in a fatal accident. The incident occurred near the entrance of Kelderhof Country Village. Provincial police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed the crash occurred at 08:22.
According to police reports, the collision involved a Toyota FJ Cruiser and a motorcycle. The motorcyclist, identified as a 23-year-old foreign national, tragically succumbed to his injuries on scene. “The circumstances surrounding the accident are currently under investigation,” Van Wyk said. Macassar police are investigating a case of culpable homicide and have called on the public for assistance. • In a separate incident, Lwandle police have opened an inquest docket into the
death of a woman in Asanda Village on New Year’s Day (Thursday 1 January). According to a police report, the 23-year-old was found dead at a residence in Solomon Drive, Asanda Village, at 08:30. It is believed the deceased went to sleep but never woke up. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding her death and a post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death. Voertuig bars in vlamme uit in Strand ’n Voertuig het Sondag 4 Januarie in Strand in vlamme uitgebars. Volgens Jermaine Carelse, woordvoerder van die Stad Kaapstad se Brand- en Reddingsdienste, het hulle om 18:00 ’n oproep ontvang van ’n voertuig wat op die hoek van Da Gama- en Nieuwenhuysstraat in Strand aan die brand is en op dit gereageer. “Blykbaar het die eienaar rook uit die motorhuis sien kom en die voertuig in die pad gestoot,” sê Carelse. Strand-buurtwaglede Gerhard Botha en Peter Rau, wat op die toneel was, verduidelik dat hulle om 17:48 ’n noodoproep op ’n WhatsApp-groep in Nieuwenhuysstraat ontvang het waar die hulpoproep oor die motor gekommunikeer is. Hulle het bygevoeg dat inwoners van Nieuwenhuysstraat onmiddellik reageer het met huishiudelike brandblussers, maar kon nie die brand blus nie. Sir Lowry’s Pass-brandweerspanne het die brand om 18:15 geblus en geen beserings is aangemeld nie. Die oorsaak van die brand is nog onbekend. In ’n afsonderlike voorval op Oujaarsdag (Woensdag 31 Desember), is brandweerspanne ontbied na ’n huisbrand wat in die Dennegeur-landgoed (Somerset-Wes) uitgebreek het. Furzel Bitterbosch en sy gesin is geaffekteer deur die verwoestende brand in Matuangstraat. “Ons was Donderdagmiddag (25 Desember) Strand toe. Iemand het ons weggevat Strand toe vir die Kersdag en toe ons terugkom, het ons gelê en bietjie film gekyk,” vertel Bitterbosch. “Terwyl ons gelê het, het ons gehoor die meisiekind in die anderkant sing ‘Let it burn’ en sy soek olie. Toe ons uitkyk toe brand die plek alreeds. Ons het probeer om die vlamme dood te gooi, want ons hokke is teen aan mekaar gebou. “Toe ons besig was om die vuur te probeer blus, het sy probeer om ons te stop. The new Grandland from Opel is quite, well, grand – both from the perspective of size (she’s a true family-sized car) and from the perspective of its rather plush appointments: fit, fabrics, and finish of the interior. A true upmarket “household carriage”, easily accommodating two adults, three children and their baggage. The three words that come to mind about the new Opel Grandland are comfort, effortless and effective. Franco-German engineering at its best. The really good-looking new Grandland competes in the midsize-SUV segment and is built on the same platform as the Peugeot 5008, but restyled and manufactured in Germany. In the process, it gets a distinctly northern European feel and look. Beautifully clean lines. I personally like it. The new model is larger than the outgoing model: 173 mm in overall length, 19 mm in height, and wider by 64 mm. The boot space is larger at 550 litres. The front grille and rear lights have a sort of 3D effect (3D Vizor grille in Opel-speak) that is illuminated at night – quite dramatic, to say the least. The actual headlights not only adjust intensity and beam depending on circumstances but offer superb illumination. Is the inside as good? You bet! The cabin has a completely new minimalist

From the wind-battered shores of Macassar to the record-breaking crowds of Stilbaai, the 2025 Hot Summer of Touch (HSOT) series cemented its status as South Africa’s premier summer sporting attraction.
Over three weeks of high-octane action, the circuit tested the grit of the country’s best touch rugby athletes across sand, grass and gale-force winds. The series found its rhythm during the third leg in Strand on Tuesday 16 December. Under glorious summer skies, 57 teams showcased elite skill levels in front of massive crowds. The day featured a major upset in the Pro series, as the Score Forward Legends' clinical performance edged out firm favorites Liberty Webb Touchies 1-0 in a defensive masterclass. However, the weather took a turn for the fourth leg at Macassar Beach on Sunday 21 December. Despite blustery winds and challenging conditions that tested ball control and composure, 38 determined teams battled it out. Liberty Webb Touchies reclaimed their dominance here, tightening their grip on the overall standings with a thrilling 3-2 sudden death drop-off victory over title contenders Most Wanted. In the Challenger series, The Scorpions began their steady rise to the top, securing back-to-back victories in both Strand and Macassar, notably defeating hometown favorites Macassar Touch 2-1 in the latter. The momentum culminated in the iconic 48th Stilbaai tournament, the sixth leg of the circuit. Flawless conditions greeted a staggering record crowd of approximately 7 500 spectators. With 56 teams registered, it was the largest edition in years. On the sand, Liberty Webb Touchies proved they are the undisputed benchmark of the sport, clinching their third consecutive Stilbaai title and their third straight Grand Prix crown.

The Challenger Series provided a grandstand finish as the BT Blizzards edged out the Scorpions, leaving a points count-back to determine who earns the coveted invitation to this year’s Pro Series. Following a "chilled vibe" leg in Mossel Bay on Saturday 27 December, where the Rugby Bum Warriors from Struisbaai emerged victorious, the tour reached its conclusion at the Hartenbos Amphitheater on Monday 29 December.
Under a scorching sun, 26 teams competed on the fast and hard grass surface. The Rugby Bum Warriors once again showed their class, defeating the Straf Doppe in the Cup final to vindicate their place in the Pro Series at their very first attempt. Reflecting on the tour, which saw over 300 teams compete, Western and Southern Beach Touch Association (WSBTA) chairperson Gerome Vermeulen, noted that the series epitomises the health-con-
scious drive of young athletes performing on a prestigious platform."The HSOT management would like to thank the players, sponsors and fans for contributing to such a great series," the organisers said in a statement. From the hard-fought wins of The Jokers in the Open section to the rising stars of the BT Blizzards Juniors, the 2025 series proved that in the world of South African touch rugby, there truly is no comparison.

Helderbergers gearing up to put in the hard yards in this year's Totalsports Two Oceans Marathon (TTOM) can elevate their preparation by participating in six official training runs. Organisers, sponsors and partners of the popular marathon, which will be held in the Cape Peninsula in April, have launched the TTOM Training Runs in the build-up to the 2026 event. Three training runs will be held in the Western Cape, two in Gauteng and one in Durban. The training runs start in Cape Town on Sunday 25 January, followed by sessions in Johannesburg (Sunday 1 February), Durban (Sunday 8 February), Cape Town (Sunday 22 February), Pretoria (Sunday 8 March) and Stellenbosch (Sunday 22 March). Open exclusively to 2026 TTOM entrants, each training run will offer a 21 km and a 12km route. The runs are free of charge, but each will have limited ca-
pacity, so runners are advised to sign-up in advance. “We’re proud to launch the official TTOM Training Runs for 2026 – an exciting build-up to what promises to be an unforgettable race year,” said TTOM general manager Wade Bromfield. “We’re announcing the dates now so that runners can plan, stay motivated and lock these sessions into their calendars. The specific start venues will be revealed on our social media channels closer to the time, as we’ll be working closely with our partnering running clubs to select the best locations. These runs are all about energy, community and shared passion – the perfect way to ignite the countdown to race day!” The TTOM weekend will be held from Friday 10 to Sunday 12 April, starting with the trail run on 10 April, followed by the ultra-marathon on 11 April and the half-marathon on 12 April.
