Polluted oceans: ‘enough is enough’

Residents, environmental activists and local schools are preparing to take a stand against the ongoing sewage spills plaguing local coastlines. The advocacy group Bays of Sewage Helderberg (BOS-H) has announced a peaceful protest scheduled for this Friday (16 January), calling for urgent government intervention to save the region’s beaches and marine life. The protest, themed “Save Our Ocean – Stop the Pollution”, will start opposite the Hibernian Towers in Beach Road, Strand at 18:00. Participants will march
to the Strand Lifesaving Club and then engage in a community beach clean-up. Water quality advocate Jamii Hamlin said the group intends to invite to Cape Town’s mayor, deputy mayor and Francine Higham (Mayoral Committee member for Health and Community Welfare) to the event. In a symbolic gesture of transparency, the officials have been invited to not only accept a petition of grievances but also to “have a swim” in the waters affected by the spills. “This ‘Stop the Sewage’ petition is vital because ongoing spills affect everyone’s daily life,” Hamlin points out. “When sewage overflows into our rivers
and beaches, it exposes the public to harmful bacteria. The lack of adequate warning creates anxiety that takes away the simple pleasures many communities rely on for well-being.” Beyond the immediate health risks, Hamlin highlighted the devastating “ripple effect” the pollution has on the local economy. The protest comes as tourism and hospitality sectors report that visitors have stayed away from fouled beaches. The petition points out that the pollution is causing severe damage to wetlands and estuaries, killing fish and seabirds, and threatening the Mother City’s unique biodiversity.
Activists argue the City is failing to uphold Section 24 of the South African Constitution, which guarantees the right to an environment that is not harmful to health or well-being. The BOS-H petition calls on the municipality to take greater responsibility and act with increased transparency regarding water quality monitoring and infrastructure maintenance. For many residents of the Helderberg, the upcoming march is a breaking point. As the flyer states: “Enough is enough.” Organisers are encouraging all concerned citizens to attend and stand together to protect the future of the coastline in the basin

‘Save water now to protect city’ Local residents are being urged to reduce non-essential water consumption after the city exceeded its daily usage target over recent weeks.

Busy weekend for fire crews Lifeguards stationed on Helderberg beaches were involved in two rescues on Sunday (11 January). In the first incident, a man was saved from the surf at Gordon’s Bay Beach, while the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services were called into action in a near-drowning in Strand. Firefighters responded an emergency call at 13:50 after the man nearly drowned near the Strand Lifesaving Club. Jermaine Carelse, Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson, confirmed that emergency services and a firefighting crew from Strand Fire Staion responded to the incident. Lifeguards pulled the man from the
water after finding him lying face down. Emergency responders performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the victim, before he was transported to a medical facility by ER24 paramedics. The man’s identity and condition is unknown. Meanwhile, firefighters managed to contain a vegetation fire in Gordon’s Bay on Friday 9 January, after a call reporting the blaze was received around 20:30. Firefighters crew from Macassar attended to the inferno in the open field just off Disa Road. The fire was extinguished by 22:00. The cause of the fire is unknown. No injuries or damage to surrounding properties were reported.
The City of Cape Town has set a collective target of less than 975 million litres per day (MLD) for the summer season. However, as of Wednesday 31 December 2025, average usage stands at 1 025 MLD – significantly above target. Dam levels currently sit at 66,8%, but are 19,7% lower than the same time last year. Climate change is making Western Cape rainfall increasingly unpredictable, with longer dry periods and more intense but less frequent rainfall. This creates greater risk of extended dry spells and increased water demand during the hotter summer months. “While there is no immediate cause for concern, all Capetonians, visitors and businesses must carefully manage their water use over the coming months,” said Zahid Badroodien, Mayoral Committee member for Water and Sanitation.

From fear to courage with ‘Mr Maths’ Jamey Gordon
witnessing dramatic student transformations. “My results speak for themselves – students regularly progress from 40% to over 80%,” he explains. One memorable case involved Michael Richardson, whose parents approached Oliver after their son achieved 12% in mid-year examinations. “They arrived with a huge chocolate cake, acknowledging they knew I was fully booked, but suggested we could ‘discuss that minor detail over coffee’,” Oliver recalls. When pressed about their persistence, they revealed the rector’s advice: “If you cannot get him to teach Michael, don’t waste your money.” Despite only 16 Saturday morning sessions, Michael achieved a distinction. Oliver now presents SACE-endorsed courses for Oxford Institute of Professional Development, delivering N4 to N6 Mathematics Road Shows nationwide since 2023. He serves as Grade 12 facilitator at Mondeor Eco School and senior teacher at Hope and Light School, where he helped build their physics laboratory. His work extends to comprehensive tutoring from Grade 9 to 12, Cambridge A-levels and tertiary mathematics. Oliver’s teaching philosophy fundamentally differs from conventional methods: “Every educator stresses that learners must learn mathematics. No! They must first understand the subject, then learn the idiosyncrasies.” He believes traditional approaches create confusion by teaching facts without context. “Once they understand, they will know how to apply the acquired knowledge at the required points, creating confidence that transforms mathematical anxiety into mastery.” Identifying concerning educational decline, Oliver warns: “We are very close
“Knowing that you are not only making a difference in one person’s life, but in that of future families.” This philosophy encapsulates why Arthur Oliver finds such reward as a passionate mathematics teacher dedicated to impacting Helderberg learners’ academic lives. Oliver, known as “Mr Maths” at Mondeor Eco School, has earned a legendary reputation among students who believe no mathematical problem exists that he cannot solve instantly. Oliver’s educational journey began unconventionally. Armed with a civil engineering degree from Wits, he tutored Grey High School learners in Gqeberha from 1979 to 1990. A pivotal moment came when he substituted for an absent mathematics head. After two weeks, the rector observed: “In all my years of teaching, I have never witnessed matric mathematics learners spending their break times sitting in class, eager to learn maths.” The rugby captain’s assessment was equally telling: “I learnt more maths in two weeks than in my entire school career.” The catalyst for Oliver’s formal educational pursuit came when an adult student asked if he held a mathematics masters degree during an evening tutoring session. “That night I lay in bed and thought about his comment, as I had no degree in maths at all,” Oliver recalls. This prompted him to complete a BSc in mathematics and physics, followed by a masters in environmental management in 2000. Oliver’s passion ignited through

Oliver measures success uniquely: “By seeing a student grow more confident, not only in their knowledge of the subject, but in their personal life as well – becoming a strong, well-adjusted young person, knowing that you had a small part in that development.” As the academic year begins, Oliver offers wisdom: “I would advise learners to start studying immediately and not fall into the false sense that ‘there’s still plenty of time’.” He emphasises honest communication between learners and parents, urging parents to actively monitor progress rather than relying solely reports. Through understanding-based teaching, Oliver continues transforming mathematical fear into confidence, one student at a time.

Pa verpletterd ná seun se skietdood Barend Williams ’n Pa van Strand is verpletter nadat sy oudste seun een van drie slagoffers geword het in ’n skietvoorval wat van ’n dubbele in ’n driedubbele moord ontwikkel het. “Dit is seer; ek het nooit verwag dat ons op hierdie plek sal kom waar ek hom daar moet laat lê nie,” sê Gawie Adams. Luidens ’n verslag van die Strand-polisie is Curtly Adams (25) en Siyabonga Jaftha (33) doodgeskiet en Ashwill Adams (28), voorheen as Jeff geïdentifiseer, Saterdag 29 November by ’n woning in Serinastraat, Sercorpark, ernstig gewond (“Skietery eis 2”, DistriksPos & Helderberg Gazette, 3 Desember 2025). Die verslag het verder gemeld ’n beampte wat op patrollie was, het op die voorval gereageer. Daar het die beampte die informele woning agter die huis om 03:18 ingegaan, waar hy die drie met koeëlwonde aangetref het. Die beampte is deur gemeenskapslede meegedeel dat die slagoffers deur drie onbekende mans geskiet is. Jaftha en Curtly het op die toneel aan hul wonde beswyk.
Kol. Jacqui Johnson, die Strand-stasiebevelvoerder, het bevestig die saak is verander na ’n driedubbele moord nadat Ashwill op Maandag 5 Desember aan sy wonde beswyk het. Sy het dit duidelik gestel anders as wat voorheen berig is, is niemand in hegtenis geneem nie, maar drie mense is wel ondervra. “Voordat hy (Ashwill) oorlede is, kon hy nie die verdagtes identifiseer nie aangesien hul gesigte bedek was,” sê Johnson. Die motief vir die skietery is nog onbekend en die polisie doen ’n beroep op die gemeenskap vir inligting oor die saak. Vir die bedroefde Gawie voel dit steeds asof die tragedie gister gebeur het. Hy vertel van die laaste keer wat hy sy seun gesien het. Hy het net ná 18:00 op Vrydag 28 November by die huis in Petunialaan aangekom en hy en sy seun het nog grappies gemaak voordat Curtly na sy ma in Annikastraat vertrek het. Min het hy geweet dat dit hul laaste gesprek sou wees. “Mense sê wanneer so iets gebeur, kan jy dit aanvoel, maar ons is op ’n goeie voet uitmekaar,” sê Gawie. Die afskeid is die perfekte

voorbeeld van sy seun, wat hy beskryf as ’n lieflike en stil mens wat nie ’n vlieg sou leed aan doen nie. “Hy het daarvan gehou om mense te help en op sy foon musiek te maak,” sê die pa. Hoewel sy seun ná hy matriek aan die Hoërskool Gordon in Somerset-Wes voltooi het, net aan grafstene gewerk en soms in tuine gewerk het, het hy groot drome gehad. Curtly wou by die weermag aansluit en in die voetstappe van sy pa volg. “Maar sy uiteindelike doel was om te studeer om ’n maatskaplike werker te word om ander te help,” sê Gawie. Hy het verduidelik dat die rede vir hierdie droom Curtly se kinderjare was, wat daartoe gelei het dat hy oor die jare verander het. “Curtly het baie emosionele dinge deurgemaak en hy was nie meer homself nadat hy met dagga begin eksperimenteer het nie,” sê Gawie. Die gebroke pa het dit verder duidelik gemaak hoewel sy seun deur ’n moeilike tydperk in sy lewe gegaan het, was hy nie by bendes betrokke nie, maar hy was dikwels die teiken van bende-aanvalle. Hy beweer dat Curtly die slagoffer van baie rooftogte was. “Hy het net alles aanvaar en ek as ouer moes alles aanvaar. Maar waar staan ek nou?” vra Gawie. “Omdat ons alles aanvaar het, is sy lewe geëis.” Volgens Gawie se weergawe van gebeure het sy seun voor die hek by sy ma se huis in Annikastraat gesit toe ’n onbekende persoon hom gevra het om saam met hulle huis toe te loop en iets te koop. Hy beweer dat sy seun saam met die persoon by die huis van Jaftha beland het en dat dit die eerste keer was dat Curtly by daardie huis was en dat hy nie vriende met Jaftha of Ashwill

Ná die hartseer oor die verlies van sy seun beweer Gawie dat hy geen ondersteuning van die Strand-polisie ontvang het nie. “Hy is om 23:00 geskiet. Van daardie tyd tot 03:00 in die oggend was hulle nog nie daar nie,” sê Gawie. Hy beweer verder dat die polisie nie met die familie oor die ondersoek of die hofsaak gekommunikeer het nie en dat hulle ingelig is dat die polisie se hande afgekap is, omdat daar geen getuies is nie. “Om eerlik te wees – die
polisiediens is swak,” sê Gawie. “My jongste seun het gevra hoekom ons nog vir die polisie moet wag – sy broer is immers al dood!” Johnson het op Gawie se bewerings gereageer en verwys na die misdaadadministrasiestelsel (CAS), wat aandui dat ’n klagte van skietery om 03:26 ontvang is en dat beamptes om 03:35 op die tonneel arriveer het. “Luidens die dossier was die ondersoekbeampte in kontak met die familie van die oorledene (Curtly), soos ’n inskrywing toon, en hulle is na die lykshuis geneem,” sê Johnson. Sy het egter die geleentheid om kommentaar te lewer op Gawie se bewering dat ’n beampte die familie ingelig het dat die polisie magteloos sonder getuies is, van die handgewys. Curtly is op Saterdag 13 Desember ter ruste gelê en sy pa voel dat die groot aantal roubeklaers en vriendelike woorde wat hy ontvang het, ’n bewys van sy seun se karakter is. Sy hart gaan ook uit na die ander ouers wat hul kinders verloor het. Hy is standvastig in sy soeke na geregtigheid vir sy seun en die ander slagoffers. “Al wat ons wil hê, is dat die polisie vir ons afsluiting gee,” sê die pa.

“Ek is nie hier om te verander wat werk nie, maar ek gaan kyk na die gebiede wat verbetering benodig.” Só sê kol. Jacqui Johnson, Strand se nuwe polisiebevelvoerder, wat haar eie soort kreatiewe leierskap na die polisiekantoor bring. Dié 57-jarige, wat net minder as drie maande gehad het om haar voete in haar nuwe omgewing te vind, is gereed om misdaad in Strand aan te pak met haar unieke benadering tot polisiëring nadat sy die teuels op Maandag 17 November ná die aftrede van die kantoor se vorige bevelvoerder, kol. Atwell Nodume, oorgeneem het. Johnson bring ’n rykdom ervaring saam as ’n 38-jaar-veteraan van die Suid-Afrikaanse Polisiediens. Dit is haar derde aanstelling as stasiebevelvoerder sedert sy in 1988 by die polisiediens aangesluit het. Haar filosofie is eenvoudig maar kragtig: “Ek plaas myself in die skoene van enigiemand wat hierdie polisiekantoor binnestap, en in die geval van ’n vermeende oortreder kyk ek na hulle en behandel hulle asof dit een van my broers kon gewees het,” het sy gesê. Hierdie benadering spruit voort uit haar eie lewensreis. Johnson, wat in Simonstad gebore is, maar in Ocean View grootgeword het, het nooit beplan om ’n polisiebeampte te word nie. Dit was druk van vriende wat haar in 1988 laat aansoek doen het. “As ek terugkyk, glo ek dat dit God se roeping in my lewe was, want ek is lief daarvoor om te dien en geniet dit om ’n verskil in mense se lewe te maak,” verduidelik sy. “Dit is dus nie ’n werk nie; dis regtig my lewensroeping.” Hierdie roeping het haar deur verskeie kantore gelei – van Bishop Lavis en Athlone tot Vishoek, Ocean View, Simonstad en Muizenberg – waar sy van konstabel tot kolonel gevorder en waardevolle ervaring as stasiebevelvoerder opgebou het. Haar onmiddellike prioriteite vir Strand is duidelik gedefinieer. Al is sy aangenaam verras deur die voldoende hoeveelheid personeel wat sy tot haar beskikking het, is sy bewus van die gebrek aan voertuie – iets waaroor inwoners van Strand al geruime tyd kla. Met dít in gedagte het sy drie probleme uitgeken, wat sy direk wil aanpak. Die eerste is dienslewering wanneer beamptes klagtes binne die gemeenskap hanteer en gehalte-ondersoeke na misdade wat klaers ingelig hou. Die tweede is drank- en dwelmgebruik en laastens bende-aktiwiteit. “Met genoeg personeel is dit haalbaar,” sê sy, wat die gemeenskap se bekom-

En as daar ’n probleem is, sal die polisie altyd hier wees.” Vir Johnson draai dit alles om vennootskap.“Ons besef as ’n organisasie kan ons dit nie op ons eie doen nie. Ons het dus ons vennote in misdaadvoorkoming nodig,” sê sy. “Misdaad is ons gemeenskaplike vyand. Die polisie is nie die vyand van die gemeenskap nie, en die gemeenskap is nie ons vyand nie.” Sy wil met die gemeenskap saamwerk om ’n volhoubare toekoms te skep en het die gemeenskap opgeroep om die fluitjie te blaas as hulle bewus is van korrupsie binne haar geledere, maar het hulle ook gesmeek om nie haar beamptes met klippe aan te val nie. Haar boodskap is duidelik: “Dis ons kinders wat ly. Dit is ons jong mans wat in hierdie dwelms vasgevang is, en ons jong meisies wat seksueel aangerand word omdat iemand dronk of op dwelms is.” Johnson se uitnodiging aan die Strand-gemeenskap is eenvoudig: “Kom werk saam om misdaad te bekamp en ’n veiliger toekoms vir almal te bou.”

Late batting onslaught not enough
HHCC tripped in opening outing
Hottentots Holland Cricket Club (HHCC) returned to the pitch for their first fixture of the second-half of the season at the weekend. While the First Division A match featured a spectacular comeback, it wasn’t quite enough to stop Pinelands CC from securing a six-wicket victory on home turf. The match began with promise as openers Irshaad Salie and Shakoer Baderoen set a steady foundation with 30 runs for the first wicket. But a cluster of wickets fell in quick succession, leaving HHCC reeling on 44/4. Just as the innings looked doomed, veteran Abdul Aziz Temoor (48) and young all-rounder Yaaseen Smith (62) steadied the ship, sharing a 106-run seventh-wicket stand. Their efforts propelled the team to a
final total of 168 all out. HHCC started their target defense with intent. Marwaan Wanza struck early, removing a key Pinelands batsman to leave the hosts at 31/1 as the teams headed into the lunch break. Despite the early breakthrough, Pinelands remained composed after lunch. A series of steady partnerships allowed the home side to chip away at the target. While Shameel Abels (2/55) was the pick of the HHCC bowling attack, Pinelands eventually crossed the finish line to claim the win. All local teams are in action this Saturday (17 January), with HHCC hosting Kraaifontein at the Navy Sports Ground, Somerset West travelling to face Belhar, Helderberg playing home against Bergvliet, Macassar locking horns with Montrose, and Strand playing Mitchells Plain at Gustrouw Sports Ground.
