ife has become extremely difficult for a 58-year-old woman, Lindiwe Dyalivane, from Nkanini informal settlement in Khayelitsha after she developed lymphedema nearly nine years ago. Lymphedema is a chronic condition characterised by swelling, usually in the arms or legs, caused by a buildup of protein-rich lymph fluid when the lymphatic system is damaged or blocked. As a result, Dyalivane is now unable to move freely as her legs continue to grow bigger daily. She says her living conditions are not suitable for her situation. “I can’t walk properly. I use crutches, and my legs become painful when I walk long distances. I spend most of my time lying in bed. Even stepping down from the bed is a mission on its own. I don’t bother going outside anymore. I just stay indoors,” she said.
Left alone The soft-spoken woman shared that what troubles her most is living alone, fearing that anything could happen to her. She previously lived with her late sister’s children, whom she raised after her sister passed away. However, they eventually left her. “I don’t have children of my own. I raised my sister’s children after she died a long time ago. But their behaviour started to change, they became disrespectful when I asked them to help around the house. Eventually, they left me in December last year,” explained Dyalivane. She now struggles with basic daily tasks such as bathing and cleaning her shack. With only a disability grant, she has to pay for assistance. Disability grant “With the little money I receive from my disability grant, I must pay someone to help me bathe, cook, clean the shack, and do my laundry. I stopped going to the
clinic for check-ups because I can’t afford transport. It costs about R250 to get to Michael Mapongwana Clinic. Even reaching the main road is a huge challenge. It can take me up to two hours to walk there,” she said. She added that when she needs medication, she relies on others to buy it for her at the pharmacy. Dyalivane also said she cannot stand for long periods due to severe knee pain.
Safer lodging All she wants is a safer place to live. She says it does not have to be a formal house, but a fully serviced site would make a significant difference. She fears that if a fire breaks out in the settlement, she would not be able to escape. Reflecting on how her life changed, Dyalivane said her condition began suddenly in 2017. “I grew up like anyone else. I was healthy and able to work. When I moved here (Nkanini) in 2012, I was sewing clothes and going door-to-door selling them. But one day in 2017, I woke up with a sharp pain in my waist. My waist became stiff, and it was difficult to walk,” she explained. As the pain worsened, she was eventually forced to stop working. When asked about her relatives, she said she does have family members, but they rarely visit or check up on her.
