While the curtain has come down on World Autism Awareness Day, commemoratedannuallyon2 April, the challenges faced by learners with autism spectrum disorder(ASD) remain firmly in place, especially in underresourced and overcrowded classrooms.
According to the World HealthOrganisation(WHO), ASD are adiverse group of conditions. Theyare characterised by some degree of difficulty with socialinteraction and communication.
Other characteristics are patterns of activities and behaviours, such as difficulty with transition from one activityto another, afocus on details and unusual reactions to sensations.
City Vision spoke to Dr Monique de Wit, postgraduate coordinator and lecturer in the Division of Rural Health (Ukwanda) at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, at Stellenbosch University, about sensoryeducation and support for learners with ASDinmainstream education and thosewithASD in highereducation
De Witsaidone thebiggest challenges learners with ASDface in SouthAfrican mainstream schools areovercrowded classrooms
“Theyare contending challengeoflarge clas access to specialised suppo succeed in their academic She said specialised cludeadaptedcurriculum, specialised training or like weighted vests”.
De Wit said teachers learners with autism who sensory sensitivitiesb clear understanding of tivities involve.
“You will react in am waytowards alearner the challenges they are readupontipsand tr have found helpful in theirsensory seeking learners.”
According to De Wit, helpful resource.
“Instagram and YouTube helpful in this, as consultations

fessionals, like occupational therapists and educational psychologists are notalways feasible in ourcontext.
She encouraged teachers to reachout andseek guidance from local occupationaltherapists for training andtoaddress specific classroom challenges.
De Wit also unpacked the role sensory educationplays in helping learners succeed academically andsocially.
“Sensoryeducation focuses on creating awareness of your own sensory profile, what calmsyou, helps you focus and prevents you from getting anxious or overstimulated. It is not only aboutavoiding sensoryinput thathas anegative impact on you but alsounderstanding when to changeyour environmenttosupport your participation in academic activities.”
She saidexamplesincludewearingnoise cancelling headphones while takingatest or chewing gumifthathelps concentration.
“Occupational therapists will usually assist you in understanding your sensory profile and makesuggestions youcan implement in yourdaily life.”
De Wit said as more students withautism enter universities andhighereducation institutionsneed to “move beyonda

in under-resourcedand
stigmaand equip students with tools to cope in academic spaces.
De Witsaid akey factor is about inclusion andunderstanding people with autism.
“Inclusion is not about changing people, it’s about understanding differences and making small, thoughtful changes in the environment, so everyone can belong and participate fully.”

Asthousands of local and international runners preparefor theTwo Oceans Marathon on Saturday11and Sunday 12 April, an expert warns thattravelrelatedsleep disruption mayaffect performance by disrupting recovery and the body’s internalclock.
While most runners focus on training, nutrition and pacing, sports scientist Shona Hendricks says sleep is often overlookeddespiteits role inrecovery and performance.
“Sleep is going to be the number one key for recovery, which is whereweget all the benefits,” Hendricks says.
She explains that travel canaffect athletes differently depending on distance and whether they cross time zones.
“If you are travellingacross time zones, youget jet lag, which affects your circadian rhythm and shifts yoursleep cycle,” saysHendricks
“Even if you are travelling within the same time zone, you still experience travel fatigue from long periods of sitting and limitedmovement.”
Hendricks saysdisrupted sleep has measurableconsequences forendurance athletes.
“There are multiple studies that show if you get less than seven hours of sleep consistently, you have an increased risk of injury and illness,” she says
She adds that poor sleep affects the body’sability to recover andadaptto training, particularly through reduced hormone release. “If you arenot sleeping at theright times, you get less release of importanthormones like testosterone and growth hormone, which help with recovery and performance,” she says.
Forrunners tackling long distances, these effects can accumulateand impact race-day outcomes.
“Reduced sleep hasa negative impact on performance,” Hendricks says.
Athletes travellinglongdistances may also facea higherrisk of illness dueto prolonged exposure in confined spaces such as aeroplanes
Hendricks urges runners to prepare their sleep patternswellbefore raceday. “I would sayone and ahalf to two weeks out, start adjusting your sleep patternsand makesure thatyou are getting enough rest,” she says.
She highlights theimportance of sleep hygiene, including maintaining adark and cool room, andavoiding screens before bedtime.
“Youreyelid is avery thin membrane, so even small amounts of lightcan activate the brain,” she says.
Forathletes crossingtime zones, Hendricks recommends aligning with local conditions as quickly as possible.
“You want to expose yourself to daylight as soon as possible andalign your eating andsleeping withlocal times straight away,” she says.
Light activity, suchasa short walk or easy run afterarrival, can also assist the body in adjusting.
During travel, she advises runners to stayhydrated, avoid alcohol, limit caffeine intake and move regularly.
“Useearplugs and eye masks if needed, andtake short naps if you can,” she says.
Despite the growing focusonperformancescience, Hendricks says manyrunners still underestimate the importanceof sleep
“They underestimatethe importance of sleepnot justfor raceday, but for training
Runners can look forward to achieving their goals on race-day as ateamofseasoned pace setters returns to lead the way at the Totalsports Two Oceans Marathon These experts will be hard at work inspiring, guiding, and helping participants chase their goals from start to finish during the Ultra Marathon onSaturday 11 Apriland Half Marathon onSunday12 April.
The Western Province Pace Setters Group, led by Paul Murphy, amember of the Blue Number Club, has coordinated the official pacing programme at the event since 2015.
Thisyear the team will deploy41pace settersinthe Ultra Marathon and 28 in the HalfMarathon, guiding runners targeting specific finish times.
Seven pace setters in the UltraMarathon have BNCstatus with three going for their 10thUltra this year. In the Half Marathon sixpace setters have attained BNC status “We place pace setters in each batch appropriatetothe runners’ expected finish times based on their seeding times,” explains Murphy. “Predicting finishing times in the Ultra Marathoniscomplex and is not an exact science. There canbe awide range of finish timesfor runners with similar qualifying/seeding times, so we do the best we can with the qualifying/
seeding information available. The pace charts we use are route profile sensitive i.e. slower on uphills, quicker on downhills. And based on analysis of real results from previous races, we follow aslight positivefade approach thatallows for runners slowing down in the second half of therace,whichiswhat90% of runners do.”
He advised runners aimingfor aspecific finish timetoremain with their target pace group during the early stages of the race.
“The danger is goingout toofastinthe firsthalfwhen the route feels easy,” he said. “From 28km,there is then 18km going up and down Chappiesand then up Constantia Nekbetween 44km -46km, which is the worst part of the route. If you still have energy at the topofConstantia Nek, thereare about10kilometresmostly downhill to the finish where you can increase the pace.”

as well,” shesays
Withthe Two OceansMarathon drawing thousands of participants to Cape Town this month, she urges athletes to treat sleep as acritical part of theirprepara-
tion.
“If we are not sleeping enough, we are increasing the risk of injury and illness, and we are not getting the full benefitof our training,” Hendricks concludes.
