Gewilde winkelsentrum in nuwe hande Is ANC LIENTJIE MENTZ
Een van die stad se groot winkelsentrums, Northridge Mall, word aan Cape Town 101 Investments verkoop. Die Kompetisiekommissie het nou die verkoop van die sentrum in Kenneth Kaundaweg in die noorde van Bloemfontein goedgekeur. Die sentrum destyds bekend as Noordstad is in 2003 deur wyle Wim Boshoff en vennote ontwikkel nadat hulle groot potensiaal hier gesien het. In 2007 is die sentrum opgeknap met die vestiging van Dis-Chem in die sentrum. Dit was egter eers ná die herontwikkeling van die sentrum dat dit werklik ’n bestemming en gewilde inkopiesentrum in Bloemfontein geword het. Boshoff is in 2015 oorlede, maar Northridge het steeds ’n belangrike deel van PHG se portefeulje en sy nalatenskap binne die groep gebly. Vroeg in 2017 het PHG die volgende groot herontwikkelingsfase van die sentrum begin, met Virgin Active as die eerste fase van die ontwikkeling en Woolworths reeds bevestig as deel van die tweede fase. In dié tyd het die geleentheid ontstaan om die verdere herontwikkeling van Northridge Mall in vennootskap met die Moolman-groep aan te pak. PHG en die Moolman-groep het die projek vervolgens gesamentlik voortgesit, met gedeelde verantwoordelikhede, en die herontwikkeling saam suksesvol voltooi. Ná voltooiing van die herontwikkeling het albei groepe steeds aktief by die sentrum betrokke gebly en verantwoordelikhede gedeel. In 2024 het PHG besluit om die volle dagtot-dag-bestuur van die sentrum aan die Moolman-groep oor te dra, terwyl PHG steeds as mede-eienaar by die bestuur en strategiese besluitneming rondom die sentrum betrokke gebly het. Die finansiële direkteur van die PHG Groep, Adam-John Boshoff, sê die besluit om Northridge Mall te verkoop is suiwer ’n beleg-

gingsbesluit. “Daar is ’n tyd om te koop, en ’n tyd om te verkoop. As verantwoordelike beleggers glo ons daarin om bates op die regte tyd en teen die regte prys te koop en te verkoop, en ons het gevoel dit was die regte tyd om hierdie bate te verkoop,” sê hy. Boshoff sê aangesien PHG ’n familieonderneming is, dra Northridge Mall groot sentimentele waarde. “Dit was een van die eerste groot kleinhandelbates waarby my pa betrokke was. Om op die duur wyse besluite te neem, moet ’n mens nie toelaat dat sentiment besluitneming vertroebel nie.” Hy sê die Boshoff-familie, PHG en die Mool-
man-groep was eenparig oor die besluit om te verkoop. Die verkoop beteken geensins dat PHG uit Bloemfontein onttrek nie. “Ons het steeds beduidende eiendomsbelange in die stad en bly voortdurend op die uitkyk vir nuwe geleenthede hier. Die verskuiwing van ons hoofkantoor na Pretoria was ’n strategiese stap om ons landwye uitbreiding te fasiliteer, en die opbrengs van hierdie verkoop help ons om verder te diversifiseer, onder andere met projekte soos Van Rijn Meent in Stellenbosch, New Corner in Northcliff, The Buzz in Fourways en die Pick n Pay Hyper-ontwikkeling in Faerie Glen, Pretoria. “Bloemfontein bly egter steeds op ons radar vir toekomstige geleenthede.”

Dit is onvermydelik nadat die ANC in Mangaung nie betyds voor die spertyd sy lyste van nominasies vir proporsionele raadslede by die OVK ingedien het nie. Die uitspraak van die Kieshof op 16 September het die ANC finaal bloedneus gegee met ’n uitspraak dat die lyste nie aanvaar sal word nie. Dr. Harland Cloete, skrywer en politieke ontleder verbonde aan die Universiteit van die Vrystaat, sê hoewel die ANC se wykskandidate op die een stembrief op 4 November sal verskyn, sal die ANC glad nie as party op die lys van partye verskyn nie. Ironies genoeg beteken dit dat die ANC se agt burgermeesterskandidate waarvan talle nou hoë posisies in die raad inneem, nie in aanmerking sal kom vir poste in die raad nie. Dit sluit die huidige burgermeester Gregory Nthatisi, die onder-burgermeester Lulama Titi-Odili en die speaker Lawrence Mathae in. Die ANC het tydens die vorige plaaslike verkiesing in 2021 51 setels verower waarvan 40 raadslede is. Die DA in Mangaung het met die vorige verkiesing 11 wyke verower en het in totaal 26 raadslede gehad. Die EFF het in die vorige verkiesing 12 proposionele stemme gehad, die VF Plus 5 setels, die Patriotic Alliance (PA) 2, die Afrikan Alliance of Social Democrats (AASD) 2, Afrikcan Independet Congress 1, African Christian Democratic Party (ACDO) 1 en African Transformation Movement (ATM) 1. Die raad het 101 setels waaruit 51 uit wyksraadslede bestaan en die res proporsioneel uit die stemme vir partye op die tweede stembrief saamgestel word. Cloete sê met die komende verkiesing is 'n koalisie-regering hoogs waarskynlik. Nog 'n groot invloed op oor hoe mense gaan stem, is voormalige alliansie-vennote soos die SAKP wat in hierdie verkiesing hul eie kandidatelyste het. “Die ANC kom na die verkiesing toe op krukke. Hulle sal soveel moontlik wyke moet wen om verteenwoordigend in die raad te wees.” Hy sê die twee grootste verloorders in die verkiesing sal die pas aangee in hoe 'n koalisie saamgestel word. ’n Interessante fenomeen volgens Cloete is die gemeenskapsgebasseerde partye wat vanjaar aan die verkiesing deelneem. Dit sluit partye in soos die United Residents Front en Active Citizens of South Africa. Die sewe voormalige ANC lede wat geskors is omdat hulle teen die ANC se besluite in 2023 gestem het, keer terug onder Mangaung Seven People's Voices. Daar is ook onafhanklike kandidate wat hulle verkiesbaar stel. Cloete sê politiek word toenemend as 'n loopbaan gesien met 'n setel wat 'n goeie inkomste vir vyf jaar bied. Die verkiesing is die eerste stap vir individue om hul voet in die deur te kry. Daar staan nou 122 onafhanklike kandidate in die verkiesing. "Daar is egter 'n styl leerkurwe vir mense wat die eerste keer tot die raad verkies word. Dit neem 'n hele ruk om te verstaan hoe alles binne die metro werk." Cloete sê politiek is baie vloeibaar. Dit kan gesien word op plaaslike vlak met deelname aan die verkiesing en die opmars na stemdag op 4 November.

Die 200 meisies in wit geklee sal voor loop in die stoet, gevolg deur Eunice se koor en die Vrystaatse Jeugblaas-ensamble onder leiding van Dingaan Chabalala wat die mars sal aangee. Hulle sal gevolg word deur ’n perdekommando. Die oorspronklike begrafnismars het van die Tweetoringkerk tot by die Vrouemonument oor 4 km gestrek, maar ter wille van die praktiese reëlings sal die stoet in Monumentweg oor 600 m tot by die monument strek. By die monument sal dele van die begraf-

Karen Meiring, projekbestuurder van die musiekteaterprduksie wat deel van die
feesvieringe vorm, sê daar gaan uitstallings wees met artifakte van Emily se lewe, sowel as demonstrasies wat vroue gaan lewer van die maak van kant en die spin van wol. ’n Konsentrasiekamp met agt tente sal besoekers insig gee in die lewe in die kampe tydens die ABO. Toegang vir Ons Onthou Emily is slegs R15, maar bespreking is noodsaaklik. Dit kan gedoen word op webtickets. Hekke open om 08:30 en om 10:30 moet almal hul sitplekke inneem vir die regstreekse TV-uitsending. Struggle against abuse runs deep TEBOHO SETENA The Free State provincial commissioner of police, Lt. Gen. Thabang Lesia, has blamed the rise in sexual abuse specifically sexual offences committed by a family member (intra-familial) on a lack of good moral values. He was responding during a BloemNews Express interview on the sidelines of the release of the province’s crime statistics for the fourth quarter of 2025-’26 and the first quarter of 2026-’27 on 1 September. While a general decline was recorded in the preceding fourth quarter, the first quarter of 2026-’27 painted a sharp contrast an upward trajectory specifically in violent crimes, including sexual offences (1,4%), contact
crime (3,6%) and other serious crime (8,0%). Lesia stressed that good moral values act as an internal compass that prevents wrongdoing, and dismissed a lack of knowledge on the part of perpetrators. “If you are a father, you fully understand and know that you should not engage in sexual intercourse with any minor, including your daughter,” said Lesia. “The challenge lies with moral values. Most of these cases are in homes fathers, uncles, brothers, and people known to the victims, especially vulnerable young ones. In some cases, you find that the perpetrator agreed with the minor, which is an offence in terms of the law, thinking that agreeing with a minor you can have intercourse. “Our function as the police is to
Suspects sought after con job TEBOHO SETENA The police in Bloemfontein are appealing to members of the public to assist with information that could lead to the arrest of two male suspects in connection with a case of robbery and attempted murder involving two 21-yearold women. The incident occurred on 31 August, with one of the victims hospitalised with severe injuries. Capt. Loraine Earle, provincial spokesperson for the police, said the men were travelling in a blue Toyota Corolla on the day of the robbery at a mall in Fleck Street, Bayswater. “The two suspects allegedly robbed two women of their cell phones and subsequently struck one of the victims with a vehicle. The incident occurred at approximately 16:10,” said Earle. The attempted murder charge relates to a suspect striking the one woman with a vehicle upon fleeing the crime scene. The incident has been captured on CCTV camera footage. Earle said the women reported that one suspect tricked them with a fake job promise upon meeting them on their way home. “The women accompanied the suspect towards a house in the Theal Crescent area. Upon reaching the vicinity, he allegedly told them that he required their cell phones to obtain security access passcodes. The women handed their phones to him,” said Earle. The suspect instructed them to wait while he walked towards a parked vehicle in the vicinity. “The women became suspicious of his actions, whereafter the vehicle allegedly sped off. “In the process, the vehicle struck one of the women and dragged her for more than 20 m. “The vehicle stopped, reversed and drove around the injured woman before speeding away from the scene. violence (GBV) convictions, working together with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA). “We have secured 14 life sentences and 8 people were convicted receiving between 20 and 30 years’ imprisonment. Furthermore, 28 people were convicted with between 10 and 29 years’ imprisonment, while 80 were convicted for between 1 and 9 years’ imprisonment,” said Lesia. Adv. Navilla Somaru, Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in the province, underscored external pressure and financial reasons as another challenge in effectively dealing with cases involving close family members. “From our side as prosecutors, we find very often after the charges have been laid and the perpetrators have been arrested, family members are under pressure to proceed with the matter. They will come to court
for children, with family wanting to withdraw because of external pressure placed on them, because of financial reasons often the perpetrator is the breadwinner. The source of income is taken away if the person is in custody and makes repeated court appearances,” said Somaru. She highlighted the fact that such cases trigger deep internal family conflicts, resulting in the reduction of cases taken to trial and successful prosecution. “When considering the arrests and first appearance statistics, and those we finally take to trial, the number reduces in the interim because family members, particularly partners and spouses, do not want to testify against the perpetrators. “Families want to resolve the matter differently, outside of court, impacting on our caseload,” explained Somaru.
Suspected drug dealer falls to his death TEBOHO SETENA The Bloemfontein police are investigating an inquest after a suspected drug dealer (33) allegedly leapt to his death from the second floor of Kenlin Court in Douglas Street. The incident happened early on Friday 18 September. Lt. Col Thabo Covane, provincial spokesperson for the police, said the incident occurred at about 11:00, while members of the Bloemfontein police’s K9 unit were investigating the source of
drugs after a suspect’s arrest for possession of the substance. “As the members stopped in Douglas Street, an unidentified man ran into the Kenlin Court building. Members gave chase, but he ran up the stairs and reached the door of a unit. He then opened the door and quickly locked the security door behind him,” said Covane. Covane said members reported that during this time, they suddenly heard people making a loud noise from outside the building.
“When they stepped outside to investigate, they noticed that the man who had fled into the flats was lying motionless on the pavement,” he said. Covane said crime scene experts summoned to the scene declared the man deceased. “The key to the security door was found underneath his body, where he had fallen to his death,” said Covane, adding that an inquest docket had been registered at the Park Road Police Station for further investigation.
Cable theft hobbles advancement in metro TEBOHO SETENA Seven suspects, aged between 23 and 50, were arrested on charges of tampering, damaging or destroying essential infrastructure in the Mangaung Metro and appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrates’ Court on 17 September. They were arrested following the recovery of stripped copper cables on 15 September. Centlec confirmed that the discovered cables, with an estimated value of R60 000, were its property, following verification. The suspects have been identified as Sibangani Ndlivu, Letsatsi Thebe, Matebele Taolana, Tholang Khetsi, Mafa Mahao, Thabang Baijane, and Tshepo Hlapane. Lt. Col Thabo Covane, provincial police spokesperson, said that members of the Public Order Police (POP) unit in Bloemfontein on routine patrol under Operation Shanela II had intercepted the vehicle the suspects were driving. This followed a tip-off from community members about criminal activities taking place in Freedom Square West. “Information was given that a group travelling in a white Mitsubishi motor vehicle were cutting cables and packaging them for sale. Swift action resulted in the recovery of 44,5 kg of copper cable. A search was conducted, and a digital sale receipt that was printed at NFS Scrap Metal Traders (Pty) Ltd and R10 400 were found in the
vehicle,” said Covane. He said the team conducted further investigation and visited the scrapyard dealership. “Copper cables sold by the seven suspects were pointed out. The manager of the dealership was issued a fine for failure to report suspicious goods, and a case of tampering with, damaging and destroying essential infrastructure and possession of suspected stolen copper cables was opened,” said Covane. He said the recovered copper cables had been booked at the Heidedal Police Station. According to preliminary investigations, three of the suspects are Lesotho nationals and in South Africa illegally. This arrest followed an increase in cable theft cases costing the Mangaung Metro millions of rands. In the latest spree, the syndicate damaged and vandalised the Bishop Glen power substation, affecting residential areas including Grobler Crescent, Rudolf Greyling and Raymond Mhlaba. Cable theft syndicates have extended their crime spree to healthcare facilities that include the Universitas Hospital. Roy Jankielsohn, DA leader in Free State, has lamented the unabated theft and vandalism of electricity infrastructure by organised copper syndicates, crippling the province’s potential economic growth. “Agricultural production, medical facilities,

My land, my huis, my erfenis ELSABE DE JAGER Wanneer my oorsese verblyf, wat oor byna twee dekades gestrek het, in ’n geselskap ter sprake kom, is die onmiddellike aanname vir die dryfveer agter my terugkeer huis toe, gewoonlik die ysige winters. Om dan telkens te moet verduidelik dat dit veel eerder die koue in my hart was wat my teruggedryf het na my land, is dikwels ’n groot uitdaging. Die viering van Erfenisdag laat my onwillekeurig nie net terugdink aan my eie verblyf in die verte nie, maar ook aan die honderdduidende Suid-Afrikaners wat ’n heenkome dwarsoor al die kontinente vind. So dikwels gesels ek met ouers wie se kinders kort tevore ver weg verhuis het. En dan, soos so baie ander kere, neem ek die verdedigingstentakels wat oombliklik uitskiet, waar. Agter uitsprake soos “beter loopbane”, wonderlike geleentheid”, “toekomsvooruitsigte vir die kleinkinders”, kyk ek op in ’n pa en ’n ma se oë waarin daar terselfdertyd matelose verlange, skynsels van verlies, soms selfs ’n brose verdwaaldheid skuil. Nooit sal ek enige voornemende landgenoot wat beplan om te emigreer, oordeel nie, want redes vir emigrasie strek so wyd soos die omtrek van die wêreld self. Luisterstorie kry Saterdag nuwe lewe op verhoog Die Skepper se Tuin, geskryf deur Bloemfonteinse skrywer en Schink Stories-stigter Martin Schwella in 2025, het oorspronklik as ’n luisterstorie-reeks op die Schink Stories-platform verskyn. Die vierdelige reeks word nou vir die verhoog verwerk in ’n kinderteaterproduksie wat deel vorm van Schink Stories se kinderproduksies danksy die verwerking van CW Laten. Die verhaal speel af in die Skepper se tuin en vertel van Daisy, Willempie Wurm, Lieben die Liewenheersbesie en Oom Tor. Wanneer Daisy ’n kraak in haar potjie ontdek, ontstaan daar groot paniek onder die groot eikeboom. Wat aanvanklik soos ’n probleem lyk, kan dalk juis ’n opening wees. Die produksie kombineer humor, avontuur en kleurvolle karakters met ’n storie wat kinders op ’n speelse manier bekendstel aan metamorfose en die verskillende vorme van lewe in die natuur. Daisy se reis is ook een van selfontdekking, waar sy uiteindelik meer leer oor wie sy is en haar plek in die Skepper se tuin.

Verhaal van breingewas tot nuwe moed LIENTJIE MENTZ Alles het ’n doel. So glo Bloemfonteiner Izani van der Wal (35) wat ’n bietjie meer as ’n jaar ’n breinoperasie ondergaan het. Vir dié vrou was dit ’n moeilike jaar vol aanpassings. Izani vertel haar verhaal met ’n musiekvideo van die lied Teater, geskryf deur musikant Petrus van Wyk. Met die lied vertel sy iets van haar verhaal van uitdagings, van depressie, van moedeloos wees en weer aangaan. Sy vertel alles het ’n jaar gelede begin met erge skeelhoofpyn. “Nadat ek een hele naweek in ’n donker, stil kamer gelê het, is ek noodgevalle toe. Daarna het dinge vinnig gebeur." ’n Meningioom is in haar brein gevind - die gewas in die frontale lob van haar brein was nie kwaadaardig nie. Die gewas was reeds 5cm groot. taal ontslaan, min wetende wat op haar sou wag. “Aanvanklik was ek erg klanksensitief. Twee weke nadat ek ontslaan is, het ek die eerste keer ’n epileptiese aanval gekry.” Die medikasie wat sy vir die epilepsie moet drink, het gelei tot
depressie. “Ek drink elke dag 23 pille. My brein is beskadig en ek is met frontale lobsindroom gediagnoseer.” Dit lei tot emosionele en kognitiewe uitdagings. Vir Izani het die afgelope jaar talle uitdagings ingehou. Sy het reeds tien epileptiese aanvalle gekry,
waar haar bene net onder haar ingee. Haar medikasie moet deurlopend aangepas word. Ongeag die uitdagings, weet sy die genade wat sy ontvang het, is groot. “Ek het nader aan die Here gegroei. Ek het geleer hoe om weer op te staan wanneer ek moedeloos is." Ná die opname van Teater, kyk sy vorentoe. Sy glo musiek is vir haar 'n manier om dinge in haar lewe te verstaan, en vir ander 'n boodskap van hoop te bring.

The Bloem Cupcake Angel Team is asking bakers to pledge a few – or many – cupcakes that will be sold on Saturday 26 September as part of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Every cupcake becomes part of a national effort to raise funds and bring support, smiles and hope to families facing childhood cancer. Imagine hundreds of local bakers all baking for the same reasons businesses challenging their teams, churches baking together, schools getting involved, families turning baking day into a family activity. They also face a question no parent should have to ask: Will the world see their child for who they are, or judge them for how they look? For thousands of South African children living with facial differences, burns and other treatable conditions, those fears can become a reality. In a world shaped by filters, unrealistic beauty standards and constant comparison, many children grow up feeling there is only one way to belong. The Smile Foundation believes it is time to tell children a different story, one where they are celebrated for their uniqueness.
Through the foundation’s 2026 Socks for Smiles Campaign, South Africans are invited to wear mismatched socks on Friday 16 October. Guided by this year’s campaign message, “Celebrate Difference. Wear Your Different,” Socks for Smiles encourages people to embrace difference while helping children receive the life-changing reconstructive surgery they need. Torings van Hoop kry nuwe leiding LIENTJIE MENTZ Die liefdadigheidsorganisasie in Bloemfontein se middestad Torings van Hoop betree ’n nuwe begin met die uittrede van ds. De la Harpe le Roux. In die 18 jaar van sy betrokkenheid sedert die oorgang van ’n tradisionele Afrikaanse NG kerk na die vorming van Torings van Hoop, was dit vir hom een groot, wonderlike uitdaging. Só sê Le Roux oor die projek wat onder sy leiding sedert 2008 gegroei het en een van die bekende en waardevolle bedienings van Bloemfontein se middestad geword het. Nou is daar ’n nuwe begin met Andreas Nieuwoudt wat die leisels oorneem. Hy is reeds sedert 2009 as vrywilliger by Torings van Hoop betrokke en is dus geen vreemdeling vir die werk van die organisasie nie. Op Le Roux wag ’n nuwe uitdaging wanneer hy in Januarie 2027 die bestuur van die Noord-Kaap se sinodale kantoor in Kimberley oorneem. “Dit is ’n jaar sedert ek en Agnieta getroud is. Ons het saam besluit dat hierdie vir ons ’n nuwe begin gaan wees. ’n Nuwe uitdaging,” sê hy. Le Roux sal waarskynlik nog tot die einde van die jaar voortgaan met sy werksaamhede as uitvoerende hoof van die NG Kerk in die Vrystaat se barmhartigheidsbediening. “Dit is ironies dat ek die afgelope 19 jaar in Kommandant Senekalstraat gewoon het. Dit is net enkele huise van waar die pastorie was waar ons

gesin gewoon het.” Sy pa, ds. Thinus le Roux, was jare lank verbonde aan die Andrew Murray-gemeente in die stad. Sy kinders kon na dieselfde laer- en hoërskool gaan wat hy in sy jeug bygewoon het. En Le Roux kon sy sendingdroom vir 18 jaar in sy grootworddorp uitleef. As jong predikant was sy eerste gemeente in KwaZulu-Natal. Daarna is hy aangestel as predikant by die NG kerk Fichardtkruin in Bloemfontein. “Ek het nog my lewe lank ’n hart vir die randfigure in ons samelewing. Met my werk by Fichardtkruin het ek betrokke geraak by Bloemshelter, vir hawelose mans. Saans wanneer ek terugry van Bloemshelter huis toe, het ek verby die Tweetoringkerk gery.” Hy het gebid dat God vir hom ’n

deur oopmaak om met minderbevoorregtes te werk in dié ruimte. “As ek terugkyk, is dit vol verwondering oor hoe die Here my naïewe klein gebede geantwoord het,” vertel hy in Torings van Hoop se jaarverslag. Ds. Gideon van der Watt het Le Roux voorgestel as koördineerder by die destydse Afrikaanse gemeente in die Bloemfonteinse middestad. Sedert die formele begin van Torings van Hoop in 2010 is ’n sterk, vol-
houbare welwillenheidsorganisasie gevestig. Die naam Torings van Hoop het verder as Bloemfontein gereik, ver oor die grense van Suid-Afrika heen, danksy Le Roux se betrokkenheid by Global Leadership Foundation, waarvan hy Afrika-direkteur is. Nieuwoudt was sedert 2023 in die bediening van die NG kerk Ooshoek in Bloemspruit betrokke. Le Roux en ds. Nico Mostert, Torings van Hoop se voorsitter van die raad, het hom einde
2025 genader om Torings se bediening oor te neem hy het in Maart vanjaar reeds die bestuur oorgeneem. Nieuwoudt sê die organisasie sal voortgaan om vennootskappe te bou. “Ek glo Torings se personeel, trustees, skenkers, vriende, ondersteuners en vennote sal voortgaan om ’n verskil te maak in die middestad se ruimtes waar die minderbevoorregtes, haweloses en migrante daagliks probeer om vir hulle ’n lewe te bou.”
Wonders explored in most unusual of places Gelowige vroue Building on the success of the flagship Deaf Awareness initiative hosted at the University of the Free State (UFS) in 2025, the School of Clinical Medicine (SoCM) and the Department of South African Sign Language and Deaf Studies, this year joined forces again to create a memorable and meaningful experience for learners from the Bartimea School for the Deaf and Blind in Thaba Nchu. Under the theme “Creating Hope for the Future through Science,” the initiative brought together learners, staff and partners for a day centred on adventure, skills development, inclusion and, most importantly, fun. The Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences hosted the learners, and the programme was designed to provide opportunities for exploration, learning, and meaningful engagement, while fostering connections and demonstrating the power of collaborative initiatives in creating more inclusive and accessible spaces within higher education. The enthusiastic and dedicated team from VR Med kickstarted the day by giving the learners a firsthand introduction to the world of emergency medical care and the work of paramedics. The team transformed the learning experience into an engaging and memorable adventure. The second activity of the day took the learners to the UFS Health and Wellness Centre for an interactive and thought-provoking session led by the director of the centre, Dr Munita Dunn-Coetzee. The session focused on an important aspect of holistic well-being: understanding and managing emotions and feelings in healthy and constructive ways. next stop was the Department of Geology, where they were welcomed into a world of discovery, innovation, and imagination. One highlight of the visit included an opportunity to explore the Department’s in-house museum and to interact directly with both staff and students. The learners were introduced to an impressive collection of rock specimens and were fascinated to discover that some of the seemingly magical rocks they had heard about, including rocks that glow in the dark, are very real. Their excitement and curiosity were evident as they explored the specimens and discovered fascinating stories.
For the rest of the day, the learners had meaningful contact with science, healthcare, technology, multilingualism, student support services and the broader university community, the initiative translated the UFS vision and strategic priorities into a lived experience of access, belonging, and possibility. The day fostered curiosity, collaboration, discovery, and personal growth, while advancing key strategic priorities including academic excellence and impact, transformative institutional culture, diversity and inclusion, holistic development, meaningful community engagement, and sustainable partnerships.
’n Vrouekonferensie genaamd One Night with the King vind in Oktober buite Bloemfontein plaas. Die tema is geïnspireer deur die Bybelse verhaal van Ester, waarin sy geroep is om in die teenwoordigheid van die koning te wees vir ’n oomblik wat nie net haar lewe verander het nie, maar ook die lewe van baie ander. Die konferensie behels ’n spesiale naweek waarin vroue die geleentheid kry om weg te tree van die gejaagdheid van die alledaagse lewe en nader aan die Koning Jesus Christus te beweeg. Hierdeur kan vroue kragtige aanbidding, gebed, inspirerende boodskappe, getuienisse, samesyn en kosbare oomblikke van verbinding verwag. Net soos Ester “vir ’n tyd soos hierdie” geroep is, het elke vrou ’n Godgegewe doel. Haar verhaal maak saak, is onder meer die boodskap van die konferensie. LANDBOUKAMPIOENSKAPPE TERUG OP BLOEMSKOU IN 2027 Beplanning vir die 2027 Bloemskou is reeds volstoom aan die gang. Volgende jaar se skou vind plaas van 22 April tot 1 Mei met die vrolike en opwindende tema “Sports” wat beloof om ’n fokus op alle aspekte van sport en balle in die uitstallings te bring. Soos altyd kan besoekers uitsien na twee openbare vakansiedae tydens die Bloemskou – Dinsdag, 27 April (Vry-
heidsdag) en Saterdag, 1 Mei (Werkersdag). Maandag 26 April sal ook ‘n skolevakansiedag wees – wat dit die ideale tyd maak vir ’n wegbreek saam met familie en vriende. Na die groot teleurstelling van geen beeste en kleinvee tydens vanjaar se skou as gevolg van bek-en-klouseer, sien genootskappe, telers en boere uit na die terugkeer in 2027.
Bloemskou bou vir hierdie 144ste skou voort op die voorreg om die enigste skou in Suid-Afrika te wees, wat vermaak, landboukampioenskappe en kommersiële aktiwiteite op só ’n groot skaal kombineer. Die voorbereidings vir 2027 toon reeds groot belangstelling: • Die landboukampioenskappe is vol bespreek,
• Uitstalbesprekings is reeds oop, • Kosstalletjies is vol bespreek, en • Kategorieë soos leerprodukte, juweliersware en speelgoed is reeds vol. Belangstellende uitstallers word aangemoedig om vroegtydig aansoek te doen, veral vir tegnologie-, buitelug-, huisware-, meubels-, klere- en leefstylprodukte. Aansoeke vir die gewilde “Gift Shop”,
waar Bloemskou namens uitstallers verkoop, open op 1 November. Geleë in die hart van Suid-Afrika, dien Bloemskou as ’n ontmoetingsplek waar sakelui, boere en besoekers jaarliks bymekaarkom om sake te doen en sosiaal te verkeer. Die skou bied ’n eenstopbestemming vir vermaak, kuier, koop en ontspanning – ’n hoogtepunt op die Suid-Afrikaanse kalender.

Kuns in kalender
Twee leerders van die EduPlus Onafhanklike Skool se kunswerke is ingesluit in Santam se kalender vir 2027. Die skool het 34 leerders se kunswerke vir die kompetisie en aanlyn uitstalling ingestuur. Elizka Janse van Rensburg en Thuan-
yo Matekane se werk is gekies om twee van die 13 kunswerke landswyd te wees wat in die kalender gaan verskyn. Santam se Kinderkunsprojek word al die afgelope 63 jaar aangebied, en leerders van skole en kunsskole van oor die land heen neem daaraan deel.
Met die aanbied van die ATKVtak Gemeenskapsteater en die Pasteur-ooghospitaal se vierde Oogkunskompetisie was daar vanjaar 40 inskrywings. Ebeth Wilson, wat die kompetisie in 2022 begin het, sê die aantal en gehalte van die kunswerke neem elke jaar toe. Met die eerste kompetisie was daar 28 inskrywings. “Selfs die peil van die laerskoolleerders se kuns slaan ’n mens stom.” Sy sê die waarde van die kompetisie strek wyer as dat ’n uitstalling van wenners se werk elke jaar in die ooghospitaal gedoen word. “ ’n Mens weet nooit wie jou kunswerk sien nie.” Die kunswerke van die wenners sal ingesluit word in die program van die Oftalmologiese Vereniging van Suid-Afrika se nasionale kongres wat later vanjaar aangebied word. Dr. Kobus du Plessis van Pasteur sê dit is lekker om te hoor dat die kompetisie elke jaar groei. “Vanjaar se tema, ‘Waar visie en drome ontmoet’, is ook heel gepas. Ons wil hê mense moet helder sien, en kunstenaars het die visie om met ’n verfkwas dit wat hulle sien en ervaar op doek vas te vang.” Die wenners is: ■ leerders 9 tot 13 jaar – Miya Maartens (wenner), Lonwabo Jangjies (tweede) en Milané Boshoff (derde); ■ leerders 14 tot 18 jaar – Anabelle Laubscher (wenner), Maya Meyer (tweede) en Nina van Zyl (derde); en ■ volwassenes – Nicoleen Smit (wen-

Endurance levels put to test Shortly before the big Deadly Dozen event that will take place in Bloemfontein on Saturday 26 September, local athletes returned from an international event.

Six Bloemfontein athletes took part in the Deadly Dozen World Championships in London at the Crystal Palace from 5 to 6 September and competed against 2 500 athletes from across the world. Lohan Swart competed in the age group 30 to 34 years and ended seventh in the solo with a time of 47:29. On Sunday 6 September Elsie Young and Mareli Swart (35 to 39 years) came seventh in the doubles with a time of 44.28. Lee-Ann Johns and Claudia Monteiro (45-49) came 18th in a time of 50.48 On Sunday, Lohan Swart and
Llewyllen Human-Reto (35 to 39) reached fifth position with a time of 39.46. With more than 500 entries so far, the event on Saturday at the Free State Athletic Stadion promises to be a day of high competitiveness. Deadly Dozen is a hybrid fitness race combining structured running with functional strength stations. The format is raced entirely on a standard athletics track and innerfield, making it straightforward to host, officiate and spectate. Deadly Dozen currently operates in more than 30 countries worldwide. Entrants take part in a race of 12 runs of 400 m, each followed by a strength labour completed back-to-back on an outdoor athletics track. This includes 12 activities like the farmer’s carry, deadlift, lunge, burpee broad jump, goblet squat and bear crawl. The event starts at 09:00. Klub ’n ware tuiste vir dié sportsoort Die Sand du Plessis-amateurstoeiklub het op 19 September die klub se eerste Peet Labuschagne-toernooi in Bloemfontein aangebied. Dit was ’n huldeblyk aan die man wat die klub jare gelede in Bloemfontein gevestig het, oom Peet Labuschagne, en die nalatenskap wat hy deur die jare in die Suid-Afrikaanse stoeisport opgebou het. Oom Peet het hy die stoeiklub by die Laerskool Sand du Plessis gestig. Wat begin het uit ’n liefde vir stoei en ’n begeerte om jongmense aan dié sportsoort bloot te stel, het oor die jare gegroei tot ’n klub wat talle jong stoeiers gevorm en inspireer het. Later het die klub na die Fichardtpark-sportterrein verskuif. Baie stoeiers van die klub het Suid-Afrikaanse kampioene geword, terwyl ander die geleentheid gekry het om Suid-Afrika op internasionale vlak in die buiteland te verteenwoordig. Die sukses van die stoeiers is ’n weerspieëling van die fondasie wat oom Peet gelê het – een wat nie net op tegniek en prestasie gebou is nie, maar veral op liefde vir die sport, dissipline, deursettingsvermoë en respek. Met verloop van jare het oom Peet se betrokkenheid by die klub nie verdwyn nie. Hy is steeds deel van die klub se lewe en kom kyk, ondersteun en help waar hy kan. Sy teenwoordigheid herinner die huidige geslag stoeiers en afrigters aan waar die klub vandaan kom.

Die afrigters wat ná hom die leisels oorgeneem het, dra dieselfde passie verder. Hulle werk hard om die klub te laat groei en om aan ’n nuwe geslag kinders dieselfde geleenthede te bied as in die beginjare. Vandag is daar talle jong stoeiers uit die klub wat op provinsiale, nasionale en selfs internasionale vlak presteer. Die onlangse toernooi het aan die breër gemeenskap gewys watter besonderse sportsoort stoei is. Stoei behels nie slegs die meet van krag en fisieke vermoë nie. Dit leer kinders dissipline, selfvertroue, respek, deursettingsvermoë en hoe om op te staan wanneer dinge moeilik raak. Stoeiers het in Augustus deelgeneem aan die Johnnie Reitz Big 5
Wrestling Championship 2026 – Year of the Elephant in Pretoria. Die omvang en vlak van dié internasionale kompetisie is beklemtoon deur die groot getal deelnemers: 886 stoeiers op 8 Augustus, en 310 deelnemers die volgende dag. Die Sand du Plessis-stoeiklub het met 19 stoeiers oor die twee dae deelgeneem en 27 medaljes verwerf. Op die Saterdag het 14 van die klub se stoeiers altesaam 9 goue, 5 silweren 6 bronsmedaljes gewen. Die volgende dag het ’n verdere vyf stoeiers deelgeneem en 1 goue, 3 silwer- en 3 bronsmedaljes huis toe gebring. Met deelnemers uit verskeie lande, sowel as Suid-Afrika se topstoeiers wat meegeding het, was die kompetisie op ’n besonder hoë vlak.

Twee Bloemfonteiners is ingesluit in die Suid-Afrikaanse o.21-vrouehokkie-oefengroep.
Die groep berei nou voor vir die Junior Africa Cup of Nations-toernooi wat in 2027 gaan plaasvind. Bianca Reece-Gibbs, oudleerder van Eunice High School, en Kirstin Booysen, ’n gr. 12-leerder van die Hoër Meisieskool Oranje, is in die oefengroep ingesluit. Kirstin het ook vanjaar vir die Suid-Afrikaanse o.18A-span gespeel
en vir Suid-Afrika se o.17-span in 2024. Sy is die sewende speler van Oranje wat 200 wedstryde vir die skool se o.18A-span kon speel. Die Afrika-been van die Cup of Nations-toernooi dien as kwalifiseringstoernooi vir die junior vrouehokkiewêreldbeker, wat in Desember 2027 plaasvind. Die kies van die oefengroep is Suid-Afrika se eerste fase van die veldtog vir deelname op die wêreldverhoog. Stacey-Lee Geduld, afrigter, sê die spelers is in provinsiale toernooie identifiseer en gaan deur harde werk en voorbereiding geleenthede kry om vir die Afrika-toernooi te kwalifiseer.

The Field Hunters Archery Club in Bloemfontein hosted both the South Africa National Indoor and Field Archery Association (Sanifa) Indoor and Field competitions. The annual Northern Cape Field Championship was held at The Willows on 5 September. The championship was held over two days and consisted of two rounds. On Saturday, archers shot a field round consisting of 28 targets, with four arrows per target, set at various distances and angles. The archers again needed to complete a 28-target course through rugged terrain on Sunday. For this, the targets on the archery buttresses were changed for the Hunter round. Archers participate in the hope of achieving a provincial or national score needed to qualify for their individual provincial or national colors. The South African National Championships will be held in March 2027, followed by the African Regional Championships in April 2027. Archers traveled from across South Africa, with some coming from Thabazimbi in Limpopo, Hartswater in North-West, and Kimberley in the Northern Cape. It was so close, yet so far for the University of the Free State (UFS) netball team as a sixth Varsity Netball title eluded them after their heartbreaking 54 - 57 loss to the University of Johannesburg (UJ) in the semifinal on Monday 21 September at the Callie Human Hall. However, luck did not favour the Kovsies as they were unable to fully exploit the advantage of playing at home when it mattered most in extra time of the fiercely contested fixture. The five-time champions UFS targeted a sixth title as the perfect fairytale farewell gift for the Kovsies’ outgoing and longest-serving mentor, Burta de Kock. She is retiring at the end of the year after a milestone career spanning more than two decades. The internationally respected coach has guided the team to five titles from seven finals in the Varsity Netball competition. De Kock’s legacy includes winning the coveted trophy in the inaugural edition in 2013 and successful defence in 2014. The UFS had hoped to atone in this edition, having finished as runners-up last year after losing 49 - 57 to defending champions North-West University (NWU) Eagles. The holders will face UJ in the grand final on Monday 28 September
A new Varsity Football men’s champion will be crowned after the defending champions, the University of the Free State (UFS), dramatically fell short to reach the semifinals despite a 2 – 1 win over the University of the Western Cape (UWC) in the final round-robin fixtures. The fixture formed part of all deciding matches on Friday 18 September, at various venues. The semifinals will see the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) take on the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT); and the University of Johannesburg (UJ) face off against the University of Pretoria (UP-Tuks) on Friday 25 September. Both Kovsies and the UWC had a chance of reaching the semifinals with a win by a three-goal margin, which would have eliminated the dark horse, TUT. Instead, the four-time champions TUT sneaked into the semifinals thanks to a one-goal advantage over the UFS and a three-goal advantage over the UWC. The Pretoria-based university improved their chances with a 4 – 1 demolition of the rock-bottom
at the NWU Mafikeng Great Hall, following their narrow 52 - 50 win against the University of Pretoria (UP-Tuks) in the other semifinal played in North West. The UJ team is chasing their maiden trophy while the Eagles are searching for their fourth title and have won it two times on a trot - 2015 and 2016.

University of Limpopo (UL). A draw would not have been enough for the UWC to qualify, as it would have left the door open for the TUT to overtake them on goal difference. The UFS and UWC slugged it out on a rain-soaked pitch in the Shimla Park Stadium in Bloemfontein. Both rued numerous missed scoring opportunities due to their inability to convert the chances needed to secure a semifinal berth. The UFS head coach, Mokete Tsotetsi, stood in disbelief as his
charges missed more chances at the death of the game. Wits are searching for their maiden trophy, while the TUT hunt their fifth title. The UP-Tuks eye their fourth trophy this year while the UJ’s Orange Army are searching for their second crown. Both the UJ and Wits finished the round-robin series on 16 points and one loss. The latter top the log standings, having scored 12 goals across seven matches. The UJ scored nine goals in total, while the UP-Tuks banged in 13 goals across all matches.
