Die spruit is in die afgelope jare toenemend besoedel, maar die dooie reuse-babers wat die afgelope twee weke oral op die oewer uitspoel, het nou die gevaartekens van dié ramp bevestig. Inwoners aan die oewer van die Renosterspruit sê hulle kan nie met die stank saamleef nie. Richard Carey, een van dié inwoners in Roodewal, sê hy moet gereeld die dooie visse en gemors langs sy eiendom verwyder. Carey het verlede week ’n brief aan die nasionale departement van water en sanitasie gestuur waarin hy sê die rivierstelsel, wat die opvangsgebied van drie rioolaanlegte is, is vol rou riool. Weens die besoedeling van die afgelope paar jaar het die meeste van die visspesies reeds uitgesterf, en net die babers het oorleef – maar selfs dié

Slegs die betonstruktuur is voltooi; die skroewe is nooit aangebring nie en die damme is nie in werking gestel nie.

TEBOHO SETENA The Free State Division of the High Court sitting in Bloemfontein on Thursday 13 August handed down a 48-year prison sentence to Solomon Marapo (39) for brutally murdering and raping Lindiwe Gumada (34) last year. This is constituted by 24 years’ imprisonment for murder and 24 years for rape. Lt. Col Thabo Covane, spokesperson for Free State police, said an in-depth investigation had uncovered the gruesome nature of the murder. “Forensic findings revealed that a candle had been forcibly inserted into the victim’s genital area. A post-mortem examination revealed that Gumada died from multiple severe injuries,” said Covane. He confirmed that the accused had been in a relationship with the victim. Covane said following a diligent investigation, the case was changed from that of an initial inquest to one of murder and rape. “It was established that Marapo had killed his girlfriend on 25 October following an altercation. Shocking evidence revealed that

the accused had continued to sleep in the same bed alongside the deceased’s body until 27 October. When the victim’s body began to decompose, Marapo fled the scene,” he said. Covane said an inquest was opened after the discovery of the deceased’s body at about 16:45. He confirmed that the accused, who attempted to evade justice, was traced and arrested three days later by Det. Sgt Kendrick Barnes. “The accused remained in custody throughout his trial,” noted Covane. He said the lengthy sentence was the culmination of the officer working closely with State Advocate Siphokazi Ntunzi of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA). Lt. Gen. Thabang Lesia, provincial police commissioner, applauded Barnes for his meticulous investigative work and prompt action, as well as the NPA for their seamless partnership. “Let this heavy sentence serve as a firm warning: Those who commit horrific acts of gender-based violence (GBV) will be hunted down and removed from our communities for a very long time,” he said.

Hande-kuns dra by tot skool LIENTJIE MENTZ ’n Spesiale kunsuitstalling vind op Vrydag 21 Augustus in die Du Monyè-galery in Bayswater plaas. KleurKind is ’n gemeenskapsprojek deur dié gallery ten bate van die Lettie Fouché-skool in die stad, waar 100 kinders kunswerke gaan maak wat ten bate van die skool verkoop gaan word. Daniel Ellis, eienaar van Du Monyè, verduidelik die idee was aanvanklik om ’n uitstalling van ontluikende kunstenaars se werk aan te bied. “Ek wou egter iets meer doen. Terwyl ons eendag by ’n restaurant kuier, loop ek Zelda Lange raak. “Ek het in 2008 vir haar ’n rok gemaak met oudpres. Nelson Mandela as tema waarmee sy aan die Mev. Verenigde Nasies gaan deelneem het.” Ellis verduidelik hy het Mandela se gesig met die hand op die rok geskilder asook sy handafdruk Zelda Lange met die couture-rok ontwerp deur en sy gevangenisDaniel Ellis waarop oudpres. Nelson Mandela nommer 46664 – met die hand geskilder is. Sy het die rok gedra simbole van hoop, tydens haar deelname aan die Mev. Verenigde menswaardigheid, Nasies-kompetisie. fabric to wrap trees with as part of the campaign. “With every tree wrapped in gold, we will raise awareness about childhood cancer,” she explains. “We want to honour the brave children and their families who are effected by cancer. We want to spark important conversations in our community and show that no child fights alone.” Minette and her husband, Daniel, knows all about the hardships of fighting cancer.

Their youngest daugter Elsunè, better known as NeyNey was diagnosed with brain and bone marrow cancer of the spine when she was 13 months old. After the treatment, Elsunè was doing well during a time of remission – she was a happy three-yearold when she experienced a relapse. A brain tumor was discovered on the right side of her brain, so treatment began all over again. Today NeyNey is a healthy

seven-year-old, to her parents’ and her older sister Deanette’s delight. It has been two years that NeyNey has been free from cancer. The family has already wrapped trees at their home in gold and hope that individuals, businesses and organisations will join in the effort and sponsor more gold fabric. The Southern African Fraud Prevention Service (SAFPS) announced it has saved its members more than R7,44 billion in potential fraud losses in 2025, underscoring the value of shared fraud intelligence in an environment where criminal syndicates are becoming increasingly organised, technologically advanced and difficult to detect. These ﬁgures were revealed in the 2025 SAFPS Annual Report, translating to a 47% increase in fraud savings compared to the previous year. Manie van Schalkwyk, chief executive officer (CEO), said the number of enquiries into the fraud database totalled 131 million for the year, reﬂecting a 63% increase in the use of shared intelligence to identify fraudulent activity before losses occur. “The results demonstrate what is possible when industries collaborate instead of tackling fraud in isolation,” he said. Van Schalkwyk stated that Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal remained the epicentres for fraudulent activity. “Document forgery, identity misuse, money mule activity and voice phishing (vishing) were geographically concentrated in Gauteng, while KwaZulu-Natal emerged as the hotspot for funeral and long-term insurance claim fraud, while also recording a prevalence in bank statement fraud and high levels of vishing-related activity.”

Die Voortrekkers se Kettieklub het tydens die Vrystaat Kunstefees in Julie ’n stalletjie beman waar mense met ’n reuse-kettie kon skiet en meer oor kettieskiet kon leer. Kettieskiet is ’n amptelike sport van Die Voortrekkers waaraan kinders van verskillende kommando’s in die stad deelneem. Geld wat tydens die fees ingesamel is, is onlangs op ’n geselligheid aan die Jean Webber-huis oorhandig. Benewens die R5 000 wat Die Voortrekkers se kettieklub oorhandig het, is ’n spesiale kunswerk ook aan die Jean Webber-huis vir mense met gestremdhede oorhandig.

Op ’n werksessie wat tydens die Vrystaat Kunstefees aangebied is - genaamd Pen, Passie en Proe - het deelnemers die geleentheid gekry om saam te werk aan die kunswerk. Dié sessie is aangebied deur Jacobus Silwer, Nelmarie Oosthuysen van die A Peace of Art-winkel en Helet Marais van Let's Crunch-spyseniering. Die kunswerke wat op die sessie gemaak is, is in een kunswerk saamgevoeg en aan Ntabiseng Molongwana, direkteur van die Vereniging vir Mense met Gestremdhede in die Vrystaat, oorhandig. Die groep Voortrekkers het op die geleentheid die inwoners van Jean Webber bederf met lekker koek.

Sports’ finest flattered TEBOHO SETENA

Kovsies’ performance worrisome TEBOHO SETENA The Varsity Football men’s defending champions, the University of the Free State (UFS), remain winless following back-to-back losses in the ongoing competition as they continue to commit costly errors. Their narrow 1 – 0 defeat against the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) Friday 14 August added to their woes after a heavy 4 – 2 loss to the University of Pretoria (UP-Tuks) in their opening ﬁxture of the tournament a week earlier. The Kovsies have suffered two defeats on their home turf of Shimla Park, raising grave concern about their ability to exploit home advantage.

The Mokete Tsotetsi-led charges remain rooted at the bottom of the log alongside the University of Limpopo, with a poor defensive record of conceding ﬁve goals. The UFS men’s next match is scheduled for Friday 21 August in Bloemfontein against the second-placed Wits, who are among three undefeated teams, including the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and the University of the Western Cape (UWC). Wits are tied with the UWC on four points, while the UJ are leading the log with six points. Another loss for Tsotetsi will plunge his team into a deeper crisis and intensify relegation prospects.
