School safety is non-negotiable TEBOHO SETENA The Free State MEC for Education has stressed that safety at schools across the province would not be compromised, during an unannounced search and seizure operation at the Navalsig High School in Bloemfontein last week. Dr Julia Maboya said her department, in partnership with stakeholders including the SAPS and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) of South Africa, would continue with unannounced operations to ensure schools remain safe. Free State Premier Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae accompanied Maboya during the operation conducted on 9 September. On the day, a contraband item was discovered in a classroom and a significant amount of money was found in a learner’s possession. Maboya emphasised that ongoing safety operations were necessary and fundamental for

safeguarding everyone on school premises. “Unannounced operation is necessary. It encompasses the National School Safety Framework (NSSF), developed by the Department of Basic Education to help schools identify, manage and respond to violence and crime,” she said. Maboya stressed that schools

must remain places of learning, safety and development. “We cannot allow weapons, drugs, alcohol, gangsterism and violence to undermine the right of learners and educators to a safe school environment. At the same time, our response must be firm, fair and supportive. We intervene to ensure our learners are clean, and create an enabling environment for learning and teaching.” She confirmed the operations underscored the department’s commitment to prioritise education and safety, further calling on parents to also take full responsibility in the education of their children by actively participating in educational programmes that instill good behavior. “We will continue to work with schools, parents, communities and the SAPS to identify risks early, intervene decisively and protect our learners,” said Maboya. She specified that the focus included early identification and referral of recurring offenders;

and prevention and awareness programmes aimed at learners, educators and school communities. Maboya said strategic operations were further necessitated by referring to 1 686 occurrences recorded between January and July on the Education Management Information System – School Portal. The Mangaung Metropolitan Education District recorded 410 (24,3%) of the total occurrences across the three selected substance-related misconduct categories. The breakdown of occurrences reads: ■ tobacco: 230 occurrences; ■ alcohol or narcotic substance: 144 occurrences; and ■ narcotic possession or peddling: 36 occurrences. “These searches help us to remove dangerous weapons that can lead to murder and assault; and drugs and alcohol that can fuel violence, bullying and learner vulnerability. “These lead to learners dropping out of school,” concluded Maboya.

TEAMWORK NECESSARY The Technical District Development Model (DDM) brought key government departments and stakeholders together on Friday 11 September to strengthen integrated planning and coordinate development priorities in Mangaung. The Free State Department of Community Safety, Roads and Transport presented its road interventions strategy in collaboration with the Department of Defence and National Public Works, as well as maintenance and revitalisation projects.

Kovsies in the home straight TEBOHO SETENA The 2026 Varsity Netball women’s championship has reached its business end, with the semifinal matchups finalised on Monday 14 September after the conclusion of Round 7 at the Rembrandt Hall in Pretoria.

The qualifiers include three previous winners: the University of the Free State (UFS), North-West University (NWU) and the University of Pretoria (UP-Tuks). Also vying for the title are the University of Johannesburg (UJ), hunting their maiden trophy. The semifinalists will meet on Monday 21 September to determine the finalists, who will compete for South Africa’s premier university netball championship title on 28 September. The semifinalists were paired according to their finishing positions in the series. UJ finished top, on 25 points; UP-Tuks placed second, on 22; the NWU

is third, on 21; and reigning runners-up Kovsies are fourth, on 21. The Central University of Technology (CUT), Free State, and the Kovsies met in their first-ever derby on Monday. The latter – under illustrious head coach Burta de Kock – secured a 60 – 46 victory, tightening their grip on a semifinal berth. The CUT, under Martha MosoahleSamm, fought gallantly to retain their status in the top-tier competition, finishing on six points overall. The gutsy newcomers proved their pedigree in their maiden appearance in the tournament, making it hard for opponents to get the better of them. They narrowly lost most of their matches, in many respects owing to the opposition’s greater experience. The CUT’s only win in the competition was a 41 – 36 victory against the seasoned Nelson Mandela University (NMU) Madibaz from Gqeberha. The CUT pushed the powerhouse teams to their limit, a fact made evident by a 50 – 52 loss to the Stellenbosch University’s Maties and 43 – 48 to the University of Witwatersrand (Wits). The CUT benefited in securing their top-division status from Kovsies beating the Madibaz 67 – 37 on 3 September, compounding the winless Eastern Cape team’s situation at the bottom of the log.
