Kellnerstraat-parkering onder druk LIENTJIE MENTZ Ondernemings in Kellnerstraat is moedeloos oor die skielike beperkte parkeerplek in die straat. Dit kom nadat 'n kontrakteur wat namens die Mangaung-metro werk gedoen het, aanpassings gemaak het op 'n verkeersroete van die munisipale busdiens Hauweng. Stephan Bezuidenhout en Wynand Flemming van Bezuidenhouts-prokureurs in Kellnerstraat, Westdene, sê parkering in die firma se terrein is destyds op grond van die bepalings van die munisipaliteit ingerig. “Nou is daar skielik 'n rooi streep en mag besoekers nie meer in die straat stop nie. Boonop is daar 'n ekstra baan geverf vir die busse, maar die busse kan onmoontlik in die baan heel links ry. Dit is baie ongelyk waar die opritte na die ondernemings in die straat is. Boonop is daar talle ou bome op die sypaadjies wat oorhel, so busse sal nooit daar kan ry nie.” Hulle sê dit maak parkering vir besoekers aan ondernemings in Kellnerstraat moeilik. Mense mag ook nie op die sypaadjie stop nie, wat die parkeerplek beperk tot parkeerplek binne die perseel. The police in the Mangaung Metro are investigating a murder and attempted murder following the fatal shooting on 13 August in the Hamilton Industrial Area. Lt. Col Thabo Covane said the police responded to a call at around 20:00 of a shooting at a wholesale premises in Enterprise Street. According to an eyewitness, balaclava-wearing men armed with high caliber firearms exited a private SUV, leaving the driver inside. The driver then sped off from the remaining suspects who approached the truck from both sides. Several shots were fired. The armed suspects then fled the scene. Most of the incident can be seen on the CCTV footage that was shared on social media. Upon arrival on the scene, police discovered a white Tata 518c Ex truck stationary in the middle of the main road. An 58-year-old male seated in the driver’s seat, slumped towards the passenger side, had suffered a gunshot wound in the face. Investigations indicate that the victim and a co-worker had just finished loading the truck when the attack took place. An unidentified white SUV arrived on the
scene, parked for a while opposite another business before driving to the scene. On the video suspects can be seen leaving the vehicle and moving towards the oncoming delivery vehicle before shots are fired. The driver managed to put the truck in reverse, coming to a stop in the middle of the main road, where he succumbed to his injuries. Two unknown males armed with firearms confronted the passenger, demanding the key to the truck’s safe. The passenger extracted the ignition keys, threw them toward the suspects, and fled the scene. Upon returning to the truck shortly after the suspects had fled, the passenger found the driver motionless. Emergency medical services were summoned, and the victim was officially certified dead at the scene. No arrests have been made at this stage, and an intensive search for the suspects and the SUV is still going on. Police appeal to anyone who may have witnessed the incident, noticed the white SUV in the area, or possesses information that can lead to arrests to call Lt. Rico se verhaal ‘weiding’ vir studente Rico, die merinoram wat sewe jaar deur die Moordenaarskaroo gedwaal het, se storie van hoop het nou gelei tot die stigting van die Rico-beursfonds. ’n Geselligheid is op Maandag 17 Augustus in die Naval Hill-planetarium gehou waar die Nasionale Wolkwekersvereniging (NWKV) en die Universiteit van die Vrystaat (UV) se Landbou-fakulteit die beurs bekend gestel het. Die fonds is die uitvloeisel van ’n inspirerende skaapstorie wat beslis nie ’n wolhaarstorie is nie – dit is ’n verhaal van uithou, aanhou en gee. Dit is nie net ’n storie met ’n gelukkige einde nie, maar ’n nalatenskap waar die stokkie aangegee word, sodat ander uithouers en aanhouers se lewens kan verander. Sommige verhale vertel jou presies waarvoor ’n bedryf hom beywer, en die wel en weë van Rico die skaap is so ’n verhaal. Rico se sinkplaatpad het begin waar hy op ’n plaas in die ongenaakbare Moordenaarskaroo, van sy trop geskei is. “Enige boer sal jou vertel dat dit baie van ’n skaap verg om stoksielalleen in hierdie area te oorleef,” vertel Dan Kriek, hoofbestuurder van die NWKV. “Rico was vir sewe jaar op sy eie, sonder enige mensehand wat hom versorg het, sonder beskerming teen roofdiere, en oorgelaat aan die elemente. “Hy moes daagliks sy eie water en weiding opspoor, en het so van droogte tot droogte oorleef voordat

iemand hom eendag teen ’n lyndraad opgemerk het.” Rico is na die Brinks van Spitzkop geneem waar hy versorg en geskeer is. Marietjie en Niël Brink sê die vag wol wat afgehaal is, het die rekordboeke gehaal met 30,7kg. “As ’n mens dink dat Rico maar 50kg weeg, dan was dit ’n aardige vraggie wat Rico gedra het," vertel Marietjie. Die Brinks het dus nie net vir Rico nog ’n kans gebied nie – sy uitsonderlike verhaal is gevier met ’n spesiale liedjie wat vanjaar saam met ’n video tydens die NWKV se jaarkongres en
eeufeesvieringe onthul is. Gerber en Co het ’n unieke muurbehangsel uit Rico se verwerkte wol gemaak. Marietjie sê nie eers al Rico se eerste vag is gebruik om die behangsel te maak nie. “Rico se verhaal resoneer op talle vlakke met die NWKV,” het Kriek op die geleentheid gesê. “Die plaaslike wolbedryf vier vanjaar sy 100ste bestaansjaar en, net soos Rico, was die bedryf se pad in Suid-Afrika nie altyd met rose besaai nie. Dis ook ’n storie van moeilike tye, oorlewing en ingrypende verandering.

Dit is egter ook ’n storie van oorwinning, groei, vernuwing en talle hoogtepunte." Effects of fire lingers still TEBOHO SETENA The street is still closed after the early morning fire that gutted a building in the Bloemfontein CBD on Sunday 23 August. A handful of shops in the vicinity of the fire-gutted commercial building in St Andrew Street have been forced to close. Shops in the same affected building, “Marabastad,” and those adjacent to it remain closed while the authorities, including police, remain on site as part of the investigation launched. The fire destroyed certain shops operating from the privately owned building while others were partly affected by smoke. Some informal traders said they also lost their stock to the devastating fire. Although the Mangaung Metro Fire and Rescue Services managed to extinguish the devastating blaze,

smoke was still seen coming from the building on Monday. Nicolette Maysiels, acting spokesperson for the Mangaung Metro, said the fire and rescue
services were promptly dispatched to the building after receiving an emergency call from the call centre. “At this stage, there are no confirmed reports regarding the cause
of the fire or extent of damage,” she said on Monday. Maysiels said relevant law-enforcement agencies will commence their investigations once the scene has been declared safe. The investigation will also determine the cause of the fire While no fatalities were reported, it has emerged that a female informal trader may be missing. According to sources, she was among the number of people who apparently were sleeping in the fire-gutted building when the fire broke out. The individual was not present at her stall which is situated adjacent to the affected building. The metro is yet to confirm the ownership of the building affected by the fire. Members of the public, motorists and pedestrians are urged to use alternative routes and avoid the section of St Andrews Street and Harvey Road which is closed due to the investigations in the incident.
Training head flagged for concealing drugs LIENTJIE MENTZ The woman who was caught with crack cocaine concealed in a mannequin head at the Bram Fischer International Airport on Saturday 22 August will appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrates’ Court for a bail hearing on Friday 28 August. Lumka Phandle (36) appeared in court on Monday after which the bail application was postponed. The drugs worth an estimated R300 000, was discovered during a routine security scan at the airport. A routine security scan at the Bram Fischer International Airport led to a major drug bust when police uncovered 232 stones suspected to be crack cocaine, concealed inside a hairdresser’s mannequin head. Phandle was preparing to board a flight to Johannesburg when an Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) supervisor alerted the Visible Policing Unit after suspicious material was

detected by the airport’s scanning equipment at about 11:26. Police responded immediately and were directed to the mannequin head in the woman’s possession. The mannequin was opened and officers found the drugs concealed among the foam padding. The stones were removed and counted in the presence of the suspect.
During a further search, police allegedly found R93 220 in cash on the woman. She was arrested and detained immediately. A case of possession of drugs, together with a charge of money laundering, was opened at the Navalsig Police Station. The investigation has since been handed over to the Hawks.

Police seize illicit drugs worth thousands THEFT PUNISHED JUSTLY The ongoing multidisciplinary Operation Shanela II has resulted in the discovery of various types of drugs at private residences and on the streets in Botshabelo – to the value of R57 000 combined. In addition, the police have arrested at least five suspected illicit drug dealers. Lt. Col Thabo Covane, provincial police spokesperson, confirmed those arrested included South Africans, as well as undocumented foreign nationals. He said police members also confiscated cash believed to be the proceeds of trading in illicit drugs in addition to the seizure of drugs including narcotics, Cat and dagga. Covane said the latest activities, conducted on 17 August, saw members of the Mangaung Metro District Operational Command Centre (DOCC) Crime Combating unit steer Operation Shanela II, targeting illegal firearms and drug trafficking in the Free State. “Officers were deployed to execute high-visibility tracing operations across multiple identified residential targets where active drug dealing and suspected firearm possession had been established,” he said. In Section A two undocumented foreign nationals, aged 29 and 35, were arrested for dealing in illegal drugs from a rented residence. “Both suspects were found to be in possession of illicit drugs and were charged with possession of drugs alongside violations of the Immigration Act after failing to produce legal documentation.” A major seizure was made in Section H3, resulting in the arrest of a 54-year-old man after large quantities of dagga had been found in the residence. “The police executed a search at a residential

address, seizing plastic shopping bags containing dagga prepared for street distribution, alongside an undisclosed sum of cash believed to be proceeds of crime.” Covane concluded by saying that two suspects, aged 29 and 33, who had been arrested between Section A and the Reahola Shopping Complex, faced charges of drug possession and business robbery.
The Bloemfontein Regional Court has sentenced seven Zimbabwean nationals to a minimum of 10 years’ direct imprisonment each for damage to infrastructure and theft of valuable material worth R2,5 million belonging to Eskom. The court sentenced the men during proceedings on Thursday 20 August. They are: Tatenda Mutanda (29), Simon Sithole (36), Phillip Chatenhedza (35), Prosper Chiwanda (32), Tiwashe Miziri (40), Themba Dube (39) and Kamokeni Chikuse (43). Lt. Col Zweli Mohobeleli, spokesperson for the Hawks in the Free State, said the conviction and sentencing was a result of an investigation by the Hawks and stemmed from an arrest by the Bloemfontein Flying Squad on the N6 on 20 November 2022. He confirmed that the court had sentenced Mutanda, Chatenhedza, Chiwanda, Dube and Chikuse to an additional 12 months’ imprisonment for being in South Africa illegally. “Information was received about a group travelling from the Eastern Cape towards Bloemfontein in a truck and a VW Polo. Upon searching the truck, copper material estimated to be worth more than R100 000 was found. A transformer worth about R2,5 million was also recovered,” said Mohobeleli. He said the truck was returned to its owner following an investigation, while the Polo was being kept at police storage. The accused were remanded in custody for the duration of their trial after they were denied bail. They will be deported after they complete their prison term. Maj. Gen. Mokgadi Bokaba, provincial head of the Hawks, has applauded everyone involved and the police’s prompt reaction that secured the men’s conviction and sentencing.

No clemency for exploitation The Petrusburg Regional Court handed Barend van der Berg (84) from Petrusburg a life sentence for the rape of a minor girl via an audiovisual link – a first-of-its-kind ruling. The victim was eight years old when the sexual exploitation became known in July 2024. The accused was sentenced on Wednesday 19 August with the court ordering that the accused’s details be entered in the National Register for Sexual Offenders (NRSO). Brig. Thandi Mbambo, provincial spokesperson for the Free State police, said the proceedings were via an audio-visual link to the accused, who is currently hospitalised and awaiting surgery with the court handing down a mandatory life sentence, deviating from the accused’s attorney’s plea for a suspended sentence. “The attorney handed in a correctional supervision report, asking the court not to send him to prison because of his age. The State argued that his age did not stop him from committing these horrific offences and that the court should sentence him to the prescribed minimum sentences applicable. “The State addressed the court on the seriousness of the offence and the fact that the accused is still a threat to children. The State argued that the victim impact statement that was handed in clearly shows the trauma the child went through,” said Mbambo. She said presiding magistrate Ingram Matroos found that there were indeed no substantial and compelling circumstances present to justify a deviation from the minimum sentence. The accused was sentenced as follows: life imprisonment for the rape, 15 years for Section 17 (sexual exploitation), and four years for Section 21 (causing a child to witness a sexual act). The child’s exploitation became known after it came to the attention of a female teacher in Petrusburg that an eight-year-old girl might be a victim of sexual abuse. Mbambo said the teacher consulted with the child, and she reported to the teacher that “Oom Bennie steeka haar”. “When the teacher asked what it meant, the girl demonstrated sexual movements with her body.” On further probing, Mbambo said the child reported that the 84-year-old “uncle” raped her. “She also reported that he gave her and her friends bread, biscuits, and soft drinks and that they were allowed to swim in his swimming pool, after which he would rape her. She reported that he raped her in his bedroom, on the bed, while other children were watching,” said Mbambo. She said the victim was a good witness, and her version was corroborated by her two friends who witnessed the rape. “The forensic nurse testified that the medical report was in line with the history that was reported,” she said. Mbambo said the magistrate found that all the children were credible witnesses and that they would not have been able to provide such detail if they had been coached or instructed to make false allegations. She said the magistrate rejected the accused’s version and his allegation that the children had been instructed to make false allegations against him.
RAPIST GETS SENTENCE The Bloemfontein Regional Court has sentenced Thompson Pheeya Matsheta to life imprisonment for abducting and repeatedly raping a then 24-year-old victim in 2024. The court further ordered that his particulars be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders (NRSO) following his sentencing on 5 August. Mojalefa Senokoatsane, provincial spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), said the sentencing was based on medical evidence that corroborated the complainant’s version of her abduction on the night of 16 November 2024 and the circumstances surrounding her escape from the accused’s shack. Senokoatsane said the victim had visited a friend’s home together with the friend’s boyfriend on the day in question. The ordeal unfolded at about 22:00 when she stepped outside to relieve herself. Detailing the ordeal, Senokoatsane said: “Matsheta grabbed her from behind, dragged her away and carried her over his shoulder to a nearby shack where he repeatedly raped her.” After managing to escape the following morning, the victim and a witness reported the crime at the nearest police station.

Speurder met Melting of rich sounds await discerning fans ’n omgeehart PIETER DELPORT Dis net na die etensuur op Vrydag 31 Julie. Ek sit in die Heidedal-polisiekantoor en gesels met die deurwinterde polisieman, kapt. Jacques Wilson, speurhoof in Heidedal. Kapt. Wilson het nog skaars sy gedagtes georden om my eerste vraag aan hom te beantwoord, of ’n kollega storm paniekbevange by sy kantoor in. “Kaptein, ons benodig dringend ’n ekstra voertuig vir ’n voorval van bendegeweld!” Kapt. Wilson laat hom nie deur die paniek van stryk bring nie, maar tel komkommerkoel sy selfoon op, maak ’n paar oproepe, en siedaar: Die voertuigprobleem is opgelos! Hierdie gebeurtenis is tekenend van die daaglikse bestaan van kapt. Wilson sedert hy in 2001 sy polisieloopbaan by die Pretoria-polisiekollege in Hammanskraal begin het. Vars uit opleiding het by die Batho-polisiekantoor as konstabel ingeval. Hoewel hy nie lank by Batho was nie, is hy heel trots daarop dat hy daar kon wegstap met ’n sersantsrang op sy kerfstok. Sy volgende polisie-avontuur was by die Mangaung- polisiekantoor, waar hy deel geword van ’n projek genaamd Funeka, wat bestaan het uit ’n uitgesoekte span hardebaard-polisiemanne wat soos bloedhonde die spoor van die mees gesoekte Vrystaatse misdadigers oor die land heen gevolg het. Sy speurervaring by Funeka het die tafel gedek vir sy latere aanstelling as speurhoof van die polisiekantoor op Reddersburg en daarna as lid van die distrikspolisie se trio-taakspan. Dit is in die trio-taakspan waar kapt. Wilson van sy grootste suksesse behaal het. Hy roep onder meer in herinnering die ondersoek na die moord op ’n hooggeplaaste amptenaar van die plaaslike regering. Met toewyding en volharding het hy verseker dat die verdagtes elkeen ’n lewenslange tronkstraf opgelê is. Sy sukseskoers in die polisie skets ’n prentjie van ’n hardgebakte vrederegter wat geen simpatie met ootreders het nie, is daar tog ’n warm hart wat in sy borskas klop. Hy het ’n sagte plekkie vir slagoffers van misdaad wat dors na geregtigheid, maar magteloos voel teenoor ’n regstelsel wat hulle soms faal. Vir sommiges is ’n polisiedossier net ’n stuk papier. Maar nie vir kapt. Wilson nie. Vir hom verteenwoordig elke dossier iemand se hoop om eendag geregtigheid te smaak. Sy boodskap aan Heidedallers is om nooit op te gee in hul soektog na geregtigheid nie. Soms draai die ratte stadig, maar dit hou nooit op draai nie. . .

An exhilarating celebration of African music, jazz, traditional and contemporary sounds await music lovers when the creativity of Jo Kunnuji joins forces with the OSM Pan-African Jazz Ensemble for Sankofa – An Experience of African Musical Entanglements. Presented in association with the annual South African Society for Research in Music (Sasrim) Conference, this concert explores how African musical traditions can be revisited, reimagined and transformed into exciting new forms. The title Sankofa, an Akan concept meaning “to go back and fetch something of value,” speaks to the idea of drawing on the richness of the past while creating something meaningful for the present and future. Leerders span hul wenwoorde in Debatspanne van oor die Vrystaat heen het op Donderdag 20 Augustus by die Hoër Meisieskool Oranje vuurwarm debat gevoer in AfriForum se Dink of Sink-kompetisie. Altesaam 32 spanne van nege skole het dit in Bloemfontein in die Vrystaatstreekuitdun se onvoorbereidedebatkompetisie uitgespook. Dit was ’n besonderse byeenkoms wat Oranje se 20ste jaar van betrokkenheid by dié kompetisie en AfriForum se 10de as nasionale hoofborg gevier het. Die deelnemers het andermaal bewys hoe flink hulle op hul voete kan dink. Junior en senior spanne van Bethlehem Voortrekker Hoërskool, Oranje, Grey-kollege (sekondêr), Hoërskool Fichardtpark, Hoërskool Jim Fouché, Hoërskool Reitz, Hoërskool Sentraal, Hoërskool Trio, en
Hoërskool Witteberg het aan die kompetisie deelgeneem. Die tradisie dat spitsvondige spanname gebruik word, is voortgesit met oorspronklike pogings soos Brulpunt (Fichardtpark), Woordwapens (Jim Fouché), Titanic (Reitz) en Slimspraak (Trio). Aanvanklik het 16 junior spanne en 16 senior spanne kragte gemeet, waarna die twee junior en twee senior spanne wat as semifinaliste deurgedring het, op ’n gala-geleentheid teen mekaar meegeding het om die Vrystaatse wenspanne te bepaal. Ná ’n spannende stryd wat byna gelykop geëindig het, het Witteberg se Die Onweerlegbares as wenner in die junior kategorie uit die stryd getree. Die span se teenstanders in die finale debat was Die Raakpraters van Oranje. Die finale senior debat was eweneens ’n titaniese stryd. Daar het Argumentum, ook van Witteberg, Oor en Uit van Jim
Fouché net-net die loef afgesteek. Vanjaar het die Noordwes-universiteit (NWU) ook ’n beurs van R20 000 aan elke lid van die wenspan toegeken. Volgens Alana Bailey, AfriForum se hoof van Kultuursake, is dit inspirerend om die jeug se entoesiasme en kameraderie op dié kompetisie te beleef. “AfriForum is trots om by die kompetisie betrokke te wees. Ons waardeer dat Oranje deel van die nasionale Dink of Sink-familie is wat met puik reëlings die sukses van dié uitdun moontlik gemaak het. Dit is bemoedigend om te sien dat tersiêre instellings soos die NWU en Akademia as borge betrokke raak en erkenning aan die deelnemers se talente gee.” Die laaste streeksuitdun van 2026 is op 26 Augustus by die Hoërskool Ben Vorster in Tzaneen. Die nasionale wenspanne word dan op 19 September in Centurion gekroon.
FCJ beloon joernaliste VERSLAGGEWER Gemeenskapsjoernaliste van oor die land heen was Vrydag 21 Augustus in Pretoria byeen vir die aankondiging van 2025 se uitblinkers in die bedryf. Die Forum vir Gemeenskapsjoernaliste (FCJ) se jaarlikse kompetisie het vanjaar 600 inskrywings ontvang. Gemeenskapsjoernaliste van enige plaaslike koerant in enige groep kon berigte en foto's in 17 kategorieë inskryf. Joernaliste van Novus Media Gemeenskapsnuus het in verskillende afdelings uitgeblink. Lientjie Mentz, redakteur van BloemNuusExpress, het 'n tweede plek behaal in die afdeling vir selfoonfotografie. Sy was ook 'n finalis in die afdeling vir munisipale nuus. Madré Marias (hoofsub) en Shirwan Newton van die subkantoor in Bloemfontein wat albei aan BloemNuusExpress, NoordKaapBulletin, VrystaatKroon en Vista werk, het nominasies behaal in die afdeling vir opskrifte. Helena Barnard, die redakteur van NoordKaapBulletin, was vierde in die afdeling vir rubrieke. Inskrywings vir voorblaaie (76 inskrywings), agterblaaie (49), gratis koerant van die jaar (45), harde nuus/ondersoekende verslaggewing (79) en oortuigende mensenuus (64) het die veld oorheers. Plaaslike regeringsverslaggewing of munisipale nuus is na 'n afwesigheid van baie jare weer ingestel met Yaseen Gaffar van DistrictMail en Helderberg Gazette wat dié kompeterende kategorie gewen het. 'n Nuwe kategorie - storie van die jaar - is ook ingestel, toegeken aan Yaseen Bardien en Mahmood Sanglay van Moslem Views. Die toewyding en talent wat gemeenskapsjo-

Dr André Gouws van Akademia was die hoofbeoordelaar in vanjaar se beoordelingspaneel. "Hierdie jaar se kompetisie weerspieël 'n gesonde en ontwikkelende gemeenskapskoerantsektor. Die beoordelaarspaneel wens almal wat ingeskryf het geluk en hoop die terugvoer wat hulle ontvang, sal selfs groter uitnemendheid in die komende jare aanmoedig," het Gouws gesê. Danksy AVBOB se finansiële belegging in die FCJ en die gemeenskapsmediabedryf, saam met die ondersteuning van Caxton, Novus Community Media en die kompetisie se nuwe vennoot, Stellenbosch Universiteit, kon die FCJ sy aanbod en ondersteuning aan gemeenskapsjoernaliste verder verryk.

Sien uit na skittergeleentheid danksy ondersteuning Genade in Aksie het op 13 Augustus ’n aand by Barrels aangebied om meisies en seuns van die stad wat nie klere vir ’n matriekafskeid kan bekostig nie met klere en bykomstighede te help. Charlene Neethling, ’n vrywilliger by Genade in Aksie, het 50 rokke geskenk gekry, asook vyf pakke klere vir seuns. Daarby het sy borge vir motors – onder meer ’n Ferrari – gekry wat sal help om die leerders na hul matriekafskeidgeselligheid te neem, asook borge vir sokkie-klasse, naels, hare en grimering. Hier saam met Neethling (organiseerder, tweede van links), met van die rokke wat geskenk is, is drie meisies wat die aand model gespeel het van links Heloise Nel, Nerique Pretorius en Isobel Burger. AfriForum het begin Augustus nóg agt Vrystaters van onder meer Bloemfontein, Bethlehem en Sasolburg as skietinstrukteurs opgelei. Dit bring die totale aantal instrukteurs wat die burgerregteorganisasie reeds landwyd opgelei het sedert hierdie opleidingsprogram, bekend as die Vrywillige Opleidingskorps (VOLK)-skietprogram, in 2022 begin is, op 185 te staan. Die opleiding word aangebied deur die organisasie se Gemeenskapsveiligheidsafdeling en fokus op skutters se verfyning van veilige vuurwapenhantering, skietvaardighede en die verantwoordelike gebruik van vuurwapens vir selfverdediging. Ná voltooiing van die program is skietinstrukteurs ook formeel opgelei as gekwalifiseerde baanoffisiere wat dié opleiding weer gratis aan lede van hul plaaslike gemeenskappe kan

Masels neem oral toe LIENTJIE MENTZ Meer as 3 891 mense in Suid-Afrika is vanjaar al gediagnoseer met masels, wat beteken dat daar heelwat meer gevalle van dié siekte is. Volgens die Nasionale Instituut vir Oordraagbare Siektes is daar sedert 29 Desember tot 16 Augustus 3 891 laboratorium-bevestigde gevalle van die siekte aangeteken. Dit is 144 nuwe gevalle in een week. Die meeste van hierdie gevalle het voorgekom in die Wes-Kaap (38) met 30 in Limpopo, 20 in die Noord-Kaap, 16 in Gauteng, 14 in die Vrystaat, 12 in Mpumalanga, 7 in Noord-Wes, 5 in KwaZulu-Natal en 2 in die Oos-Kaap. Dr. Cloete van Vuuren, hoof van interne geneeskunde by 3 Militêre Hospitaal in Bloemfontein, sê die toename in gevalle is omdat daar kinders en volwassenes is wat nie teen hierdie of ander kindersiektes ingeënt is nie. “In sekere Vrystaatse streke is tot 57% van kinders nie ingeënt nie. Om bestand te wees teen ‘n siekte soos masels, moet 90% van die bevolking ingeënt wees.” Cloete sê kinders wat hul twee dosisse immunisering gehad het, is immuun teen die siekte. “Die entstof het geen nadelige gevolge nie,” verseker hy. Dit is kommerwekkend dat die 676 positiewe getalle van die siekte wat tot dusver in die Vrystaat aangeteken is, is dat vir elke een pasiënt wat aangemeld is, daar maklik 10 of 20, wat nie by ‘n dokter uitkom of getoets word nie. Cloete sê net verlede week is daar ses pasiënte met masels in hospitale in Bloemfontein opgeneem en masels het al by talle skole in die stad voorgekom. Die groot probleem met mense wat masels onder lede het, is dat hulle twee dae voordat hulle simptome wys, aansteeklik is. Hulle is ook nog vier dae vandat die uitslag verskyn het, aansteeklik. “Mense wat in kontak kom met iemand wat masels het, kan gaan vir die masels-inenting en sal beskerm word. Dit kan geen skade doen as iemand die twee basis-dosisse as kind gehad het, en nou weer voorkomend ‘n inenting kry nie, ” sê hy. Kinders kry hul eerste basis-inenting op ses maande en die tweede op 12 maande. Sowat 7% van mense wat ingeënt is, kan wel nog die siekte opdoen. Cloete sê dit is moontlik dat mense nie meer hul kinders ineënt omdat kindersiektes nie meer so algemeen voorkom nie. Die probleem is dat as mense die siekte kry, daar langtermyngevolge kan wees met komplikasies jare nadat hulle dit gehad het. Die instituut moedig mense wat vermoed dat hulle masels het aan om ‘n dokter of kliniek te besoek en bloedtoetse te laat doen om die siekte te bevestig.

Toer laat geskiedenis deur ervarings leef Die hoërskoolleerders van Die Voortrekkers van oor Suid-Afrika en Namibië heen het van 6 tot 10 Augustus aan die Nasionale Verkennertoer en Jeugberaad deelgeneem. Die vyfdaagse program het die leerders meer oor geskiedenis, avontuur, kultuur en leierskap geleer. Hulle het oor belangrike gebeurtenisse geleer en kon boonop die plekke besoek waar die geskiedenis afgespeel het. Die toer het by die Voortrekkermonument in Pretoria begin. Tydens ’n skemertoer kon die jeuglede die monument verken en die uitsig vanaf die dak teen sonsondergang geniet. ’n Nagmars met flitse en ’n besoek aan die gedenkmuur het die eerste aand op ’n avontuurlike wyse afgesluit. Die volgende dag het die groep die Erfenissentrum en die Transvaalmuseum uit die tyd van die onafhanklike republieke besoek. Hulle
het ook ’n skattejag voltooi en meer oor vergaderingsprosedures geleer. Hierdie vaardighede is later in die toer tydens die Nasionale Verkennerberaad gebruik. By Fort Schanskop het die groep ingegrawe in die geskeidenis en aandete geniet met die sonsondergang. Die dag is afgesluit met ’n kampvuur en konsert by die Lewende Laer, waar sang, kitaarmusiek en goeie geselskap vir ’n feestelike atmosfeer gesorg het. Saterdag se program het almal aan verskillende hoofstukke van Suid-Afrika se geskiedenis bekendgestel. Hulle het die Apartheidmuseum, die Witkop-blokhuis naby Meyerton, die Vrede van Vereeniging-monument en die Sharpeville-gedenkteken besoek. By elke plek moes hulle nadink oor oorlog, onreg, vrede en die waarde daarvan om uit die verlede te leer. Vir die aandprogram het die groep na die
Vegkop-terrein vertrek, waar hulle meer oor die Anglo-Boereoorlog geleer en gehelp met bewaring deur die letters van Vegkop weer op te helder deelgeneem. Op Sondag het die Verkenners na Doornkloof naby Lindley gereis, die historiese plaas van die Voortrekkerleier Sarel Cilliers. Ná die erediens het die Nasionale Jeugberaad plaasgevind. Die beraad het jongmense die geleentheid gebied om brandpunte te deel wat uiteindelik aan Die Voortrekkers se hoofbestuur oorgedra is. Die Verkennertoer het bewys dat geskiedenis veel meer as datums in ’n handboek is. Dit is ’n verhaal wat by monumente, museums en historiese terreine lewendig word. Die deelnemers het teruggekeer huis toe met nuwe kennis, waardevolle herinneringe en ’n groter besef dat jongmense self die volgende hoofstuk van Suid-Afrika se verhaal sal skryf.
Pioneer of sports and corporate world earns her stripes TEBOHO SETENA Pioneering woman Mamosina Sinki Leshabane was capped with a special feather for making an impact in sports, the coveted MEC's Lifetime Achiever Award, at the annual Free State Sport Awards ceremony held on Saturday 15 August. Zanele Sifuba, MEC for Sport, bestowed the honour on the trailblazing community builder of her generation, recognising her positive impact in football. Leshabane has her footprint firmly planted in football in the Free State and South Africa through her club, Mangaung Unite FC, currently campaigning in the ABC Motsepe League in the province. She broke barriers in the game of football, managing a successful team in a historically male-dominated industry. Making this gesture one to last a lifetime for Leshabane is the fact that she was recognised while
still alive. Leshabane’s sheer willpower and resilience place her at the coalface of the male-dominated sport of football and community building through her enterprise, Mahube Tumelo Projects. Her return to the football scene after a brief break demonstrates her incredible willpower and resilience as a prominent sports executive. She is not defined by her club’s narrowly missed promotion on numerous occasions to the professional ranks, the National First Division, but by her legacy of creating opportunities in the game and making it possible for young men and women to realise their dreams. Dube bows out at CUT TEBOHO SETENA
The vice-chancellor and principal of the Central University of Technology (CUT), Free State, Prof. Pamela Dube, will not complete her five-year term, as she has decided to take early retirement due to ill-health. This will be effected from 31 December. In a statement, the council said it had accepted her decision, which was due to ill-health. The council expressed its appreciation to Dube for her leadership, commitment, and contribution to the university during her tenure, which officially began on 1 January 2023. MAN JAILED FOR GIRLFRIEND’S DEATH The Free State police have welcomed the 24-year imprisonment sentence the High Court of the Free State Division handed to Seuntjie Wilson Rosi (47) for the murder of Anna Mogoase (55), a woman with whom he had a romantic relationship. Rosi was sentenced on Tuesday 18 August. The police investigation revealed Mogoase’s death followed a gender-based violence (GBV) incident that occurred in January last year. An in-depth investigation revealed the victim died following a brutal assault at a residence in Grassland
II in Bloemfontein on 23 January, at approximately 18:00. Lt Col Thabo Covane, provincial spokesperson for the police, said members who attended to the complaint found the victim with slight bruises on her body. “An investigation indicated that the victim had been involved in a heated domestic altercation with her boyfriend prior to her death,” said Covane. He said the designated investigating officer, Det. Sgt Sechaba Thapelo Tsholo, arrested Rosi five days later following a manhunt.

Saints earn FS championship titles St Andrew’s Bloemfontein has been crowned the 2026 Free State Hockey Champions after a memorable day of cup final success, with the school claiming both the U14 and U19 Free State Cup titles. The final was played on the Saints Astro on Saturday 22 August. The U14 side produced a convincing performance in the final, overcoming Witteberg High School to secure the title
in impressive fashion. Their dominant display capped a superb campaign and underlined their status as one of the province’s leading schoolboy teams. The U19s were equally impressive when it mattered most, defeating Trio High School 3 – 1 in a composed and determined final performance. The victory sealed the senior cup title and sparked celebrations as St Andrew’s complet-
ed a remarkable double title victory. In the U16 competition, Grey College won their section against Trio. With Cup victories at U14 and U19 level, St Andrew’s can proudly celebrate being crowned the Free State Champions for 2026 – a tremendous achievement that reflects the talent, commitment and hard work of the players and coaching staff.

Talent onder water vertoon LIENTJIE MENTZ Die vier Vrystaters wat deel was van die Suid-Afrikaanse o.19-onderwaterhokkiespanne wat in Turkye gaan deelneem het, sê hulle het nie net die toer geniet nie, maar baie geleer. Die twee meisies wat in die meisiesspan ingesluit is, is Taylor Coetzee (Eunice High School) en Janelle Botha (tuisonderrig), terwyl Kaleb Ras (tuisonderrig) en Xavier Branco (Grey-kollege) ingesluit was in die seunsspan. Hulle het aan die wêreldonderwaterhokkie-ouderdomskampioenskapsbyeenkoms van 16 tot 25 Julie in Turkye deelgeneem. Altesaam 12 lande het op die byeenkoms meegeding.

Hoewel die Suid-Afrikaanse spanne nie plekke behaal het nie, was dit vir almal ’n wonderlike geleentheid om te leer. Kaleb sê dit was ’n ervaring om op internasionale vlak aan die sport deel te neem. “Dit het my uitgedaag om 'n spanspeler te wees,” verduide-
lik hy. Taylor sê sy het nie net baie oor die spel geleer nie, maar ook oor hoe sy kan verbeter. “Ek het harder geswem en meer gedoen as ooit. Die sigbaarheid in die swembad waar ons deelgeneem het, was wonderlik.”

Acrobats keep a fine balance Runners eagerly lace up Bloemfontein Gymnastics hosted a boys’ and girls’ artistic competition on 8 August. Clubs from all over the Free State took part, with 270 gymnasts who entered at the Showgrounds Farm Yard. Milan Botha, Cha-Lize Botha, Kamohelo Tsime, Thandolakhe Serame, Alrike Jooste, Jano Wepener and Luca Klopper of the Bloemfontein Club all received gold medals at the competition. At the Southern Free State Qualifier on 15 August, the club earned 17 gold, 11 silver and 12 bronze medals. The gymnasts also qualified to represent the Southern Free State at the Free State Flip Festival on 11 and 12 September.

Big-name local runners will mark the debut of the Absa Run Your City Mangaung 10 km series, which is scheduled for 25 October. Established runners LJ van Zyl and Johan Nortje are set to swap the track for the road in the eagerly awaited race in Bloemfontein, which offers a whopping R337 200 in prize money, adding an extra layer of excitement to the city’s newest premier road running event. The Mangaung edition brings to six the number of cities in the Run Your City series, catering for competitive and lifestyle runners, as well as the development of future competitive runners. Netball fever Archers take aim at gold in Bloem grips City Archers from across South Africa attended the Sunette Smal Target Championships held at the Tempe Archery Club in Bloemfontein The Sunette Smal Target Champions, which were held on 22 and 23 August, is named after Sunette Smal, a prominent South African National Champion and master archer from the Free State, who competes in the Women's Master's recurve division (50+). The conditions were challenging due to wind, but this only inspired the archers competing for gold to dig deep for a perfect score at the 50-metre distance required for the Senior Archers. The results were: ■ Masters (50+) compound men: Gold Kobus Barnard; Silver – Wally Weldeck; ■ Compound men: Gold – Walter Hanneman; ■ Masters (50+) compound woman: Gold – Sunette Smal; ■ Compound woman U18: Gold - Katelynn Muller (Jim Fouché High School, 13); and ■ Compound men U13: Gold - Hendré Potgieter (Universitas Primary School.
TEBOHO SETENA Defending Varsity Netball champions, the Eagles of North West University (NWU), and last year's runner-up, the Kovsies of the University of the Free State (UFS), have set the pace in South Africa's premier netball competition. Both sides won their two Round One matches in the tournament staged at the Coetzenburg Indoor Centre in Stellenbosch. The Eagles had to dig deep to beat a gutsy University of Pretoria (UP-Tuks) side by a single goal, 60-59, in a thrilling second match of the 2026 Varsity Netball edition, while the Kovsies defeated Maties 49-43. The Kovsies maintained their intensity, refusing to allow their opponents to pull away. Going into half-time, the Free State side led the hosts narrowly, 22-19. While Maties fought hard in front of their home supporters, the Kovsies maintained their composure and showed their pedigree, extending their lead to 35-28 at the end of the third quarter. They contained the Western Cape opposition until the final whistle. In their opening game, the Kovsies were made to work hard to overcome a tough UP-Tuks side 58-55. Newcomers, the Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT), suffered two losses, 43-48 to Wits and 35-57 to powerhouse University of Johannesburg, respectively. The annual Championship was held at the Tempe Archery Club in Bloemfontein and was officiated by the South African National Archery Association (Sanaa) Continental Archery Judge Emile Botha. Botha will travel to Dakar to officiate during the Youth Olympics to be held
from 31 Oct to 13 Nov. Sanaa offers its members the opportunity to participate in all disciplines, and it recognises both the World Archery Federation and the International Field Archery Association disciplines. In so doing, members can decide which discipline they are more comfortable with and have the opportunity to compete in target, field, 3D, indoor, and outdoor events using compound, recurve, or barebow. The next event to diarize is the South African National Indoor and Field Archery Association (Sanifaa) Northern Cape Field Championship, taking place on 5 and 6 September at The Willows Farm, just outside Bloemfontein. The Field Championship is one of the highlights on the calendar, with archers shooting outdoors with targets set in natural and rough terrain, much like a golf course. Archers shoot at stationary targets from varying distances, heights, and angles. Archery is a family-friendly sport that can be enjoyed by young and old, participants and spectators alike.
