TheElectoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) reported that just over 300 000 transactions were processedonvoter management devicesatvoting stations,whileanadditional 30 000 applicationsweresubmittedthrough theonlineplatform duringthe voterregistration weekendof20and 21 June

Theweekend registration drive washeld aheadofthe upcominglocal governmentelections on Wednesday4 November

In astatementissuedonMonday 22 June,the IECsaid it hadrecorded2.9 million registration transactionsoverthe two-day period,upfrom 1.7 million duringthe comparableregistration

weekendin2021.

Accordingtothe Commission, the registration weekendachievedtwo majorobjectives: continued growth of the nationalvoters’ roll and an improved registrationyield amongyoung people.

Theregistrationdrive increasedthe total number of registeredvotersto28,5 million. Of the 2,9 million transactions,477 174 were first-time registrations,representing16% of all registration activity, while 2,4millionvoters used the opportunitytoinspect or update their registration details

TheIEC noted that updatingvoter information is particularly importantahead of localgovernmentelections because“thereisnostatutory

opportunityfor avoter to vote at avotingstation in whichtheyare not registered.”

Thenumberofvoterswho re-registeredatthe same votingdistrict wastallied at 89 082, while voters who changedtheir votingdistrict was talliedat36598.

Youngpeopleremain aprioritytargetgroup for voterregistration, with morethanseven million South Africans under the ageof30who qualify to vote still notregistered.

Thenumberofthosewho registeredisas follow: 1004 aged 16 to 17; 12 017 aged 18 to 21; and132 555 aged above21.

TheCommission’sTertiaryInstitutions Campaign (TIC)continues to strengthen youth participation.
