Tipping ground a festering wound

TEBOHO SETENA

Bloemfontein’s northern landfill site is a ticking environmental and social time bomb for residents, particularly those residing near this crime-ridden dumping site.

The inability of the Mangaung

Metro’s authorities to find a lasting solution has residents up in arms and demanding immediate action

Gravely concerned residents voiced their frustration at a community meeting held at the Bloemfontein High School in Bayswater on Thursday, 21 August

A DA ward councillor called the community meeting to enable affected residents to voice their grave concerns pertaining to the negative impact on their lives

In attendance were officials who included Dr Thabang Thinda, head of the Department for Community Services at the Mangaung Metro

The residents’ frustration was evident, as some of them threatened

legal action against Mangaung to compel authorities to take decisive action regarding the landfill site

Residents bitterly lamented the persistent pollution of the air due to smoke caused by people burning waste for days, and illegal occupation around the landfill

They described the symptoms of the problematic landfill

“We are suffering health problems such as lung issues due to smoke inhalation The air pollution is immea-

surable We cannot breathe fresh air because of the persistent burning of waste by people having no regard for our lives

“We are unable to cope with such a health-hazardous environment, which the municipal authorities are responsible for

“Our need to buy air freshener products adds to the unreasonable bills for rates and taxes, as well as refuse collection,” said a beleaguered resident

Another resident mentioned that the problematic landfill also impacted the value of their properties

“We are unable to sell and even rent out our properties, simply because people do not want to live in a hazardous environment

“Even businesses on the northern side are affected by the ongoing problems of the landfill The last resort for everyone is to disinvest from the city of Bloemfontein because of the metro authority’s failure to improve the conditions

“There is no value for the money we pay for all services the Mangaung Metro is offering,” said another resident, who is in the property business

The meeting added to the voices raised regarding the municipality’s lack of action

Almost three years ago, the metro promised to completely shut down the landfill site, but this has come to nothing

Thinda’s explanation that the metro authority is in the process of applying for a high court eviction order to remove “illegal” dwellers, was met

with dismay

“That is shocking to hear that the metro authority must first apply to court to evict people illegally occupying the landfill, which is a property of the municipality

“This, while we residents, paying for services, must continue to suffer, ” said an angry resident

Thinda explained that the challenge centered around the landfill was due to population growth and rapid urbanisation contributing to an increase in waste generation

An AfriForum audit of 2019 on landfills in the Free State revealed that none of the 20 landfill sites had adhered to national standards

In terms of applicable legislation and regulations, including the National Environmental Management: Waste Act, a landfill site must adhere to particular standards

The audit flagged a serious lack of waste management licences, medical waste that was illegally dumped on the landfill site, as well as poor control and management of the sites as some of the biggest problems

In Doodnormaal is Lukas, ’ n verhoogbestuurder onder druk

Play revives love story

What if true love was just a spell?

In To Dream Again, a modern reimagining of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the enchantment wears off – and real life begins This poignant, humorous, and heartbreakingly honest production delves into the realities of love lost, told through the eyes of a spirited nine-year-old girl Boldly contemporary and profoundly moving, To Dream Again invites audiences, young and old, to see Shakespeare’s legacy through a sharply relevant, 21st-century lens

Written by acclaimed British playwright Toby Hulse and presented through arrangement with Plays for New Audiences, To Dream Again imagines what happens after the curtain closes on Demetrius and Helena’s enchanted love affair

In a world where fairy tales unravel and relationships falter, young Sophie tries to reunite her estranged parents using the magic of storytelling – and a mischievous plumber who just might be Puck in disguise Winner of the American Alliane for Theatre and

Education (AATE) Distinguished Play Award (2018), the play speaks directly to the challenges of South African families, especially in light of a recent 10 9% increase in divorces, with over half involving children

With an inventive set, ensemble storytelling, and richly layered performances, this production offers laughter and truth

“Directing To Dream Again has been an exercise in gentle disruption,” says director DeBeer Cloete “We lean into the whimsy and magic of Shakespeare while holding space for the emotional realities many children face today In South Africa, where familial separation is increasingly common, this piece offers recognition and resonance – but also hope It is a rare thing: a play that listens as much as it speaks”

The production is on stage on 3, 4, 5, and 7 September at 11:00, and at 18:00 on 6 September in the Scaena Theatre on the main campus of the University of the Free State (UFS) Tickets cost between R25 and R60, and are available on Webtickets

Composer honoured for offerings

The Odeion School of Music (OSM) at the University of the Free State (UFS) has duly honoured Prof Jeanne Zaidel-Rudolph, one of the key figures in composing and arranging South Africa’s revised national anthem.

The institution hosted a concert recognising the composer on Wednesday, 20 August

Capping it off, Zaidel-Rudolph’s complete archive of over 80 compositions across various genres was handed over to the music school

Zaidel-Rudolph is one of South Africa’s most celebrated composers and contributed to revising the national anthem between 1995 and 1997 - her involvement was at the request of former Pres Nelson Mandela

She received the Order of Ikhamanga (Bronze) from former Pres Thabo Mbeki in 2004 for her contribution to the arts

Recognised as a pioneer in the country’s musical and academic life, Zaidel-Rudolph holds the distinction of being the first woman in the country to attain a doctorate in music composition, awarded in 1979 by the University of Pretoria (UP)

Her studies later took her to the Royal College of Music in London and to Hamburg, Germany, where she worked under the legendary György Ligeti With more than 80 compositions across diverse genres, Zaidel-Rudolph’s career reflects a rare balance of daring creativity, refined craft, and deep cultural rootedness

“We recognise a living legend, and we honour a life steeped in music, in meaning, and in mentorship Her compositions have shaped our national identity We celebrate a woman of many facets – a composer, educator, pioneer, and a friend of the UFS," said Prof Vasu Reddy, deputy vice-chancellor of Research and Internationalisation at the UFS

He added: “Prof Zaidel-Rudolph’s

the

archive is a legacy of knowledge, creativity, and cultural memory Your voice as composer will remain bold, intricate, and unmistakably your own as we treasure your gifts It will serve as a living resource for students, scholars, and performers

“Your archive will fuel research, ignite performance, and stimulate the imagination for generations to come ”

Prof Alexander Johnson, director of the International Institute of the Arts of the UFS and an accomplished composer of international repute, helped secure this priceless collection

It includes manuscripts, personal correspondence, rare handbooks, journals, and artefacts that will now

be digitised and catalogued for future generations of scholars and performers “This is nothing less than a national treasure,” said Dr Jan Beukes, head of the OSM He described the handover as a moment of profound significance, not only for the university but also for South Africa’s cultural landscape

“To be entrusted with such a legacy is an immense privilege As custodians, we will safeguard it and ensure that students at undergraduate and postgraduate level have access to an extraordinary field of research possibilities "

Zaidel-Rudolph expressed great appreciation for being recognised for

her contribution “I could not think of a more fitting repository for my music material than the UFS,” she said She added that the recognition warmed her heart, knowing her work would be carefully respected and presented Zaidel-Rudolph emphasised her hope that the archive would inspire students, researchers, and music-lovers for years to come The UFS Archive for Contemporary Affairs will have oversight of the collection

“It fills me with a sense of incredible gratitude that there is an institute that is sufficiently committed to look after the music of a South African composer, to curate it, promote it, and

let it be there for others”

Zaidel-Rudolph explained that the work was inspired by a yearning for harmony in an often-divided world

“At my age and stage, having lived a long life so far - thank God - my sense is that people need to be more loving and unified, the sisterhood and brotherhood of nations I hoped this work would give a sense of unity among performers and convey that unity to audiences,” said Zaidel-Rudolph

As an accomplished South African composer, pianist and teacher, Zaidel-Rodulph was commissioned in 1996 to write a work (Oratorio for Human Rights) for the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games

Female flair fuels science, research

TEBOHO SETENA

Altogether 30 female scientists and researchers making strides in their field of expertise were duly honoured at this year's South African Women in Science Awards (Sawisa) ceremony

These trailblazers received prestigious accolades at an event held in Bloemfontein on Thursday, 21 August

Dr Nomalungelo Gina, deputy minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, honoured these women alongside the keynote speaker, Dr Nomakwezi Mzilikazi, deputy vice-chancellor of Research, Innovation and Strategic Partnerships at the Rhodes University and inaugural recipient of the Sawisa Doctoral Fellowship

The event tied in with the annual Women's Month, celebrating and honouring women for their achievements and showcasing their ability, as well as for being role models who inspire the next generation

This year marked 20 years of recognising excellence in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (Stem) The ceremony continued the department's commitment to transformation, equity and inclusion in the national system of innovation

The theme for this year is “Unpacking Stem Careers: Her Voice in Science”

According to the department, the theme places emphasis on amplifying women ’ s voices in Stem, breaking stereotypes, creating inclusive spaces

for innovation and leadership, and strengthening mentorship for career advancement

Gina highlighted that the scope of the 30 recipients’ contribution was proven by the 2024 Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Indicators and Facing-the-Facts Reports, reflecting South Africa’s steady progress in advancing gender equity in science,

technology and innovation

“Women’s representation in scientific publications has grown from 32% in 2005 to 43% in 2021, with female authorship steadily increasing In public higher education, women now make up 50% of enrolments in science, engineering, and technology fields; and they graduate at higher rates than men, with black women

comprising 72% of that group, ” confirmed Gina

“Women also represent 52% of postgraduate students and 54% of graduates, although they remain a minority at the doctoral level Women ’ s representation among research and development (RD) personnel has risen from 41% in 2006-’07 to 48% in 2019”

Gina however lamented the fact that representation of black South African researchers remains disproportionately low, with 17% currently holding National Research Foundation (NRF) ratings

Women account for 63% of enrolments and only 23% of artisans are women, in Technical and Vocational Education and Training colleges (TVET)

Gina has encouraged more women to tap into the field of science and research

“South Africa now ranks among the top countries in the world when it comes to gender equity in science, engineering and technology (SET), thanks to the policies and programmes adopted since 1994, such as Sawisa and our postgraduate funding policy,” stated Gina

“Over the past ten years, the department has been exceeding its annual target of having women as 55% of postgraduate students”

The celebration surrounding Sawisa 2025 culminated in the launch of a commemorative book titled SAWISA: Where Are They Now during a live broadcast breakfast discussion on Friday

The broadcast was the perfect platform for award recipients to share details of their journey and achievements, as well as to inspire public engagement with STI The book profiles 40 alumni whose impact continues to inspire

Gina participated alongside some of the trailblazers in the discussion aimed at empowering more women

New director primed to help players become well-balanced

An experienced Springbok and Cheetahs rugby player, Schalk Ferreira, was appointed as the new director of rugby at the St Andrew’s School from 1 January 2026

A well of knowledge

Roland Rudd, headmaster, said he believes Ferreira’s leadership will ignite a new era for rugby at the school

“With a proven track record both as a player and as a coach, Schalk brings a

wealth of experience and deep passion for the game

“Over the years, he has played under several Springbok coaches and is currently still playing for the Cheetahs, benefiting from elite-level mentorship and insight

“His journey through South Africa’s robust rugby landscape gives him a nuanced understanding of player development, strategy, and leadership – qualities that align seamlessly with the values we uphold at St Andrew’s,” Rudd said in a news release As a school committed to building a

strong rugby programme, the community is particularly excited about Ferreira’s capacity to foster talent from grassroots through to U19 level His experience positions him uniquely to elevate the school’s programmes – both within Bloemfontein and across the broader South Africa

“His values – integrity, team spirit, discipline, and holistic player development – mirror those we cherish here
