Season of giving marked in appropriate fashion Christmas celebrations are in full swing at the Windmill Casino in Bloemfontein. On 4 December the Christmas Garden Lights were switched on. The event brought an incredible turnout of families, friends and holiday enthusiasts. The evening raised valuable support for Windmill’s beneficiary, the New Beginnings Animal Shelter. “Thank you Windmill, and all visitors, for your generous donations. It costs more than R220 000 a month to run our operations,
and we care for up to 70 animals at any given time,” said Natalie Kotze, president of New Beginnings. “Every donation, big or small, is greatly appreciated, especially during this festive season.” For visitors who would like to donate pet food, blankets, beds, bowls or toys, a donation box was placed in the casino foyer, opposite Rosie’s Restaurant. Johan Oosthuizen, general manager of Windmill Casino, described a heart-warming event. “Seeing so many members of the community come together to celebrate the festive season was
truly special. We are proud to host an event that spreads joy, supports a local charity, and creates lasting memories. We welcome everyone to return throughout December to enjoy the lights and share in the spirit of giving.” The lights remain on and will continue to shine until Monday 5 January. To keep the festive fun going, live music, a vibrant night market, and plenty of activities for the little ones will follow. Children can meet Santa and his cheerful helpers in the enchanting Santa’s Village on Thursday 18 De-
cember. Here they can share their Christmas wishes. Parents can capture these magical moments with keepsake photos of their children’s visit. Santa’s Village will be open from Thursday, through to Saturday 20 December, from 16:00 to 22:00 each evening. Hope is his lifeline Teddiebere reis baie wyd LIENTJIE MENTZ
LIENTJIE MENTZ Recalling a terrifying ordeal from years ago which he barely survived, a Bloemfontein father tells his story in an Amazon Kindle edition e-book. In this story, local businessman Juan Maree gives a gripping, moment-by-moment account of his dramatic survival after being stranded in a deserted and isolated patch of South Africa’s West Coast on 22 June 2022. He tells of freezing nights, scorching sun and the battle to put one foot in front of the other in shoes not meant for a 90km hike accross some of the harshest landscapes in the country. Juan’s survival depended on a series of split-second decisions, physical endurance, and the determination to keep moving despite his surroundings saying otherwise. The story is not only about pushing his body beyond its limits, it is also about family, the love and prayers that kept him alive, and his family remaining hopeful. The book, aptly titled More! More!, tells the story as it happened al those years ago, bringing his experience to life with words from his then two-year-old daugter, Skyla. With no way of contacting the outside world after his car got stuck in sand, with him battling the elements, starving and dehydrated, Juan’s wife, Michelle, at

home in Bloemfontein prayed for his safe return. Surviving such an ordeal and having a way with words, Juan tells a powerful and touching story of survival, faith, and family. “We are never truly alone – even in the loneliest places. Kersvader is met groot glimlagte begroet toe hy en drie Cheetah-rugbyspelers op Sondag 14 Desember teddiebere in hospitale uitgedeel het. Vanjaar sal meer as 10 000 teddiebere deur Kersvader en sy span versprei word aan kinders wat in hospitale oor die land heen behandeling ontvang. Dit vorm deel van die veldtog Golfing4Teddies (G4T) wat al die afgelope dekade elke jaar oor Kerstyd siek kinders se hart bly maak. ’n Golfdag is op 2 Desember aangebied, en tesame met die inkomste uit die dag waarby bekendes en borge van ondernemings van oraloor betrokke was, is die beertjies gekoop. Megan en Heinrich du Preez het G4T in 2015 begin. “ ’n Teddiebeer is nie net ’n sagte, wollerige speelding nie, dit is ’n maatjie vir ’n kind wat deur ’n swaar tyd gaan,” het Megan Sondag by Mediclinic Bloemfontein gesê. “Dit is regtig nie lekker vir kinders om in die hospitaal te wees nie. Dit is nog erger om hierdie tyd van die jaar siek te wees. Met hierdie projek wil ons hulle net op ’n klein manier bederf.” Die eerste ding wat die kinders doen, is om hul nuwe teddiebeer-vriendjie ’n stywe drukkie te gee. Megan sê hul missie is om alle kinders te laat beter voel: dié in openbare en private hospitale oor die land heen. Die span het Sondag drie hospitale in Bloemfontein besoek. Hul eerste stilhouplek waar Kersvader sy sakke vol teddies oopgemaak het, was die Life Rosepark-hospitaal. Hier het Kersvader en sy helpers 36 teddies uitgedeel. hlali Mosi en Ntokozo Makhaza saam met Kersvader die pediatriese saal besoek. Remofilwe Marolo (5) het haar teddiebeer styf vasgedruk en saam met Kersvader vir die kamera geglimlag. In die voorportaal het twee kinders wat vir hul ma in die hospitaal kom kuier het, ook elk ’n teddiebeer en ’n koekie gekry. Ouma Louise Nel sê dit is nie vir die kinders lekker om hul mamma in die hospitaal te sien nie. Altesaam 42 teddies is by Mediclinic uitgedeel voordat die span teddiebere na die Universitas- Akademiese Hospitaal geneem het. Die span het uit Bloemfontein vertrek na Beaufort-Wes en reis van daar na Kleinmond en Hermanus; dan na plekke al langs die tuinroete tot in Gqeberha; en van daar na Durban op 21 en 22 Desember, voordat hulle na Gauteng terugkeer.

Sy breek al wat rekord is LIENTJIE MENTZ Anri Rautenbach (19) van die Hoërskool Jim Fouché het op die Afrika-jeugspele van 11 tot 13 Desember ’n goue medalje in hoogspring verdien. Sy is lid van die Suid-Afrikaanse span. Rautenbach het op 1,75m gespring 5cm hoër as haar naaste teenstander van Namibië, Alexandra Scheepers. Sy het vroeër in die seisoen op Wildeklawer se Grey-Oranje-byeenkoms haar naam ’n tweede jaar agtereenvolgens in die rekordboeke geskryf. Verlede jaar het sy die byeenkomsrekord vir o.15-meisies in hoogspring na 1,68m verbeter; vanjaar het sy die rekord van 2009 in die o.16-afdeling verpletter met ’n persoonlike beste wenhoogte van 1,71m. Op die G4GA-junior, -jeug en -senior-springkampioenskapsbyeenkoms, wat op 25 Oktober aangebied is, het Rautenbach ’n eerste plek vir o.17-meisies behaal dié keer met ’n hoogte van 1,72m. Met haar eerste sprong op die byeenkoms op Vrydag 12 Desember het sy haar beste hoogte tot nog toe behaal en daarmee goud op die spele behaal.
Sit inspanning om in spoed Martin Ferreira (foto) was een van die uitblinkers op die byeenkoms van die Vrystaatse Sportvereniging vir mense met Gestremdhede wat op 1 November in die Vrystaatatletiekstadion aangebied is. Altesaam 180 atlete het aan die byeenkoms deelgeneem, en die atlete van die Martie du Plessis-skool het die trofee gekry vir die algehele wenspan op die dag. Jong swemmers vaar uitstekend 'n Leerder aan die Hoër Meisieskool Oranje het op die Vrystaat-swemkampioenskap op 6 Desember ’n allemintige 17 goue medaljes huis toe gevat. Plus een silwermedalje.

Onder Leandi Prinsloo (14) se puik prestasies, was ’n rekord wat sy in die 50m-vlinderslag opgestel het. Twee van haar goue medaljes was vir haar deelname in aflosnommers. Sy het in elke individuele item in haar ouderdomsgroep ingeskryf en is slegs in die 800m-vryslag geklop. Ander swemmers van Oranje wat uitgeblink het is Emma Pretorius (15), wat vier goue en drie silwermedaljes in individuele nommers behaal het. Meandri de Vos (15) het in vier nommers gewen en een tweede plek behaal.
