Students turn to violence

Students funded by the national Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) will conitnue to be registered in full

This is according the University of the Free State (UFS) after all on-campus academic activities were suspended due to student protests

Things got out of hand at the Qwaqwa campus when students caused extensive damage to university property on Monday, 13 October Students of this campus were ordered to vacate the campus within 24 hours

UFS, says the protests are related to the introduction of a fairer, more equitable, and sustainable financial support system for all students as of 2026

“Under this system, academically qualifying students will be fully registered once their fees or funding have been confirmed”

Mathews Phosa to launch book

The Phaphama Book Festival is an annual celebration of literature, learning and culture, where authors of note have their say

The festival starting on 22 October at the Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT), will focus on art that deserves the spotlight

Running for four days, it will feature exhibitions, masterclasses, book launches, a literary tour and debate competitions The festival brings together authors, readers and communities to promote literacy, creativity and social impact, underscoring the value of books as a powerful tool for empowerment and transformation

Some of the keynote addresses on the first day of the festival include that of Dr Sujata Tiwari, an author, entrepreneur and social justice advocate from Singapore

Some of the minds shaping tomorrow that will also be part of the week’s discussions are Dr Allen Mutono, Tseliso Mpekoa and Ncazelo Ncube-Mlilo

During the masterclass on Thursday, 23 October, a panel discussion will investigate the bond between the traditional science, technology, engineering and mathematics (Stem) subjects and arts to foster creativity, critical thinking and innovation (Steam), with the Steam family highlighting the transformative power of art in life and careers

One of the highlights of the programme is a literary tour and 150 year celebration of the Adeleide Tambo Public Library

Leading FS talent reach supernova status

Sport stars from across the Free State once again gathered for the glamorous Free State Sport Stars awards in Bloemfontein. The best sportsmen and sportswomen were celebrated for their achievement at the gala event hosted by Novus Media and the University of the Free State (UFS). Standard Bank was the main sponsor of the event. Top-performing athletes from schools, all the way to senior level as well as sponsors, coaches and official guests gathered at Monte Bello Estate on 9 October to celebrate the top athletes in the Free State Mlungisi Louw took the photos.
