Presies ’n jaar ná die ongeluk wat die lewe van twee boeties en hul niggie by die N8-kruising buite
Bloemfontein geëis het, het vriende en familie kranse langs die pad gelê.
Die twee Smit-boeties, Ryan (6) en Ayden (8), en hul niggie, Leané Papendorp (8), is op 24 Januarie 2025 by die verkeerslig op die N8 by die Aljo’s Superspar dood.
Dit het gebeur toe die motor waarin Leané se ma, Adri Jonck, die kinders skool toe geneem het in ’n ongeluk met ’n Hilux-bakkie betrokke was.
Jonck en nog 'n maatjie van die kinders, Tennique Joubert, wat saam met hulle in die voertuig was, het die ongeluk oorleef.
Hulle was albei Saterdag 24 Januarie saam met familie by die kranslegging by die verkeerslig waar Krugerlaan uit die N8 by die Aljo’s Superspar draai.
Intussen is drie kruise op die plek opgerig met foto’s van Ryan, Ayden en Leané op.
Familielede het Saterdag kranse en blomme by die drie kruise op die kruising by gelê.
Ballonne is ook daarna losgelaat.
Tinkie Jonck, die drie kinders wat gesterf het, se ouma, het op die geleentheid die gemeenskap bedank vir hul ondersteuning.
Sy het gepraat oor hoe rou en seer hulle nog almal is.
“Hulle (die kinders) is op hierdie dag ’n jaar terug van ons af weggevat. Dit is hartseer.
“Doelloos, nutteloos.
“Dit moes nie wees nie.
“Ek glo ons sal eendag antwoorde kry.
“Ek leef om by hulle te wees. Ek glo hulle is gelukkig en hulle wil nie met ons plekke ruil nie. Ek glo hulle leef elke dag hier om ons.”
Sy sê sy en die familie het elke dag pyn.
“Daar is nie ’n dag wat verbygaan waarop ons nie seer het nie. Van die ongeluk af het ons nog elke dag dieselfde pyn gehad.”
In ’n aandoenlike oomblik het Tennique drie ballonne met die letters waarmee haar drie maatjies se name begin, in die lug vrygelaat.

keerslig die Vrystaatse blou somerhemel ingesweef oor die plek waar hulle 'n jaar gelede gesterf het. Die bestuurder van die bakkie Tristan Kearney (20) het Woensdag 21 Januarie in die Bloemfonteinse streekhof verskyn.
Kearny sal weer op 24 Maart in die hof verskyn op drie aanklagte van strafbare manslag, een van roekelose en nalatige bestuur, die verontagsaming van ’n padverkeersteken, asook die oortreding van regulasies wat betrekking het op die aantal mense wat hy met dié voertuig kon vervoer.
Daar word verwag dat hy dan op die aanklagte sal pleit.

Hy sê landboustudie word reeds aangebied – nou volg landboubestuur en -tegnologie.

LIENTJIE MENTZ
Jackie Botma, a former Eunice learner and teacher for many years, has been appointed as the principal of the Eunice High School on Monday 19 January.
She acted in the position since the previous principal, Zinnette de Wet, took on the role of principal at the Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool in Pretoria in April 2025.
After attending many schools, including a school in the United Kingdom (UK) from 1982 to 1984, she began her association with Eunice in 1987 when she attended Gr. 10 and later matriculated at the school.
She completed her education at the University of the Free State (UFS) in 1994 and began her teaching career at Eunice a year later.
After a year, Botma moved to Namibia to teach in Grootfontein, and later returned to Bloemfontein to resume her teaching career in 2001 at Eunice.
After being appointed as the
deputy principal in 2018, she became the fifth principal to this prestigious girls’ school in Bloemfontein in the first term of 2026.
Botma says Eunice is her happy place.
“Coming to school in the mornings is such a pleasure. Every morning, I am greeted by smiling faces.”
She is very proud of the school's academic achievements, but believes that the learners should have balanced lives, taking part in sport and cultural activities.
Botma says one of her visions for Eunice in 2026 is that there should be healthy competition in sport. “There is nothing wrong with being competitive. We want to focus more on sports, getting teams and athletes to perform on higher levels.”
About her appointment as principal, she said De Wet was a wonderful mentor to her. "I learned that you never say no to an opportunity. You will never feel ready, because being ready is not a feeling - It is a decision."

Nuwe teater geopen

Die eerste hibriede vaskulêre teater in die sentrale deel van Suid-Afrika is Vrydag 23 Januarie by die Life Rosepark-hospitaal geopen.
Prof. Asha Malan, vaskulêre chirurg by Life Rosepark en die eerste vroulike president van die Vaskulêre Vereniging van Suidelike Afrika, sê die bou van dié teater is ’n droom wat waar geword het.
“Dit is veel meer as net ’n nuwe operasieteater – dit is ’n stap vorentoe vir gesondheidsorg in sentraal-Suid-Afrika. Te lank het geografie uitkomste bepaal. Vandag sê ons wêreldklas vaskulêre sorg hoort hier naby die huis.”
Hospitaalbestuurder Hein Rossouw sê die teater is nie bloot ’n opgradering van die hospitaal se geriewe nie - dit is ’n belegging in die toekoms van gesondheidsorg vir die Vrystaat.
“Van die begin af was ons visie om ’n ruimte te skep waar innovasie, pasiënt-gesentreerde sorg en kliniese uitnemendheid kan saamkom.
Ek is trots op die span wat dit moontlik gemaak het en ek is dankbaar teenoor Life Healthcare vir die ondersteuning van ’n projek wat vaskulêre operasies gaan verander.”

Malan verduidelik die teater maak dit moontlik om in die middel van ’n prosedure met 'n ander te begin, indien nodig. Die hibriede teater vorm ook die grondslag van die Vrystaat Gevorderde Aortasentrum, ’n gespesialiseerde sentrum, ’n inisiatief toegewy aan die behandeling van komplekse aorta-siektes deur minimaal indringende tegnieke. So kan prosedures wat voorheen 10 tot 12 uur se operasie vereis het, nou deur klein insnydings uitgevoer word, wat die tyd wat ’n operasie duur aansienlik verkort en die risiko en hersteltyd in lyn bring met internasionale beste praktyke. Malan sê operasies word reeds die afgelope twee maande suksesvol in die teater gedoen.

Cobus Wilken van die Hoërskool Jim Fouché (JF) het homself in die rekordboeke ingekolf met ’n beurt van 192 lopies – die hoogste telling nóg deur 'n kolwer van JF in dié skool se krieketgeskiedenis.
Dié fantastiese beurt was toe JF se eerste krieketspan Saterdag 24 Januarie teen Welkom-Gimnasium kragte gemeet het, en die wedstryd met 197 lopies gewen het.
Cobus se beurt het bestaan uit 20 viere en sewe sesse en hy het sy 192 lopies van slegs 128 balle aangeteken.
JF het eerste gekolf en 371/7 in sy 50 beurte aangeteken. Gimnasium is daarna uitgeboul vir 174 lopies.
Die beste kolwers vir die dag was Cobus en sy broer, Niel, met 50.

LIENTJIE MENTZ
Die Bloemfonteinse kortafstand-blitsatleet Rumé Burger (17) het pas die jongste senior Suid-Afrikaanse atleet in die geskiedenis geword wat ’n professionele kontrak by Nike losgeslaan het.
Rumé is ’n gr.12-leerling aan die Hoër Meisieskool Oranje. Sy het die afgelope seisoen in die 100m en 200m geskitter. Sy het op die Suid-Afrikaanse senior kampioenskapsbyeenkoms die jongste finalis in die 100m geword en ook die jongste nasionale kampioen in die 200m. Rumé se ma, Marinda, sê die Nike-kontrak maak vir Rumé baie deure oop.
“Nie net borg hulle haar atletiekklere en spykerskoene nie, maar ook haar reiskoste,” sê Marinda.
“Rumé droom om so ver met atletiek te kom soos wat sy kan. Sy hoop om in 2028 in Los Angeles aan die Olimpiese Spele te kan deelneem.”
Rumé sê die Nike-borgskap beteken vir haar ongelooflik baie.
“Dit is ’n groot eer en mo-
tivering en wys dat harde werk en toewyding raakgesien word. Dit het gekom deur konsekwente prestasie en mense wat in my potensiaal glo.”
Haar afrigter is die Olimpiese atleet Elinda Vorster.Die kampioen-bloed loop dik in Rumé se are. Haar pa is die afriger van die Blitsbokke en voormalige Blitsbok en Cheeta-vleuel Philip Burger; en haar oupa, Thys Burger, het in die jare 1980 vir die Springbokke rugby gespeel.

“My doel is om gesond te bly, myself optimaal voor te berei en Suid-Afrika met trots te gaan verteenwoordig. Ek wil my beste prestasie lewer,” sê sy.

The Applicant (Antlia Energy (RF) (Pty) Ltd) is applying for Environmental Authorisa�on of a 132 kV Overhead Powerline and switching sta�on (part of the substa�on complex) to connect the authorised 200MW Good Hope PV Solar Park (Good Hope Solar 1 and Good Hope Solar 2 PV) to the Na�onal Grid via the proposed Eskom Art em is su bs ta �o n. Th e proje ct is lo ca te d ne ar Dealesville, Tokologo Local Municipality, Free State Province The project is located within the Kimberly Renewable Energy Development (RED) Zone 5 and the Central Electrical Grid Infrastructure (EGI) Corridor The OHPL will be approximately 8 km in length.

The proposed OHPL and associated infrastructure trigger Lis�ng No�ce 1 and Lis�ng No�ce 3 Ac�vi�es in terms of the EIA Regula�ons, 2014 (as amended) and as such, the Basic Assessment process will be followed applying for environmental authorisa�on.
