Vala uMgodi leaves no stone unturned

Illicit mining pulled apart MARTI WILL

Operation Vala uMgodi continues to hit hard at illegal mining operations in the Goldfields, with eight suspected illegal miners arrested during intensive operations over the Easter weekend.

Standing tall to find the sunlight Almost 80% of South Africa’s sunflower production is concentrated in the North West and Free State provinces. Farmers plant sunflower seeds between November and January, while harvesting happens between late April and mid-May. These beautiful bright yellow globes are scattered throughout the Goldfields. On rainy days they droop their glorious crowns but at the first sign of sunlight they start to raise their heads towards the heavens. The Goldfields has experienced unseasonally good rains since 1 April. More than 180mm has been experienced in the region until 22 April and more heavy rains are predicted. Photo: MartiWill
