DEAR GREAT FALLS NEIGHBORS,

Can you believe it’s already February? Time really does fly. This month feels like the perfect reminder to slow down just enough to make sure we’re investing our time where it truly counts—our families, our friendships, and the Great Falls community we all love.

This month’s cover features Afsoun Raz, a woman whose story is grounded in resilience and ambition—values instilled by her parents and carried forward with purpose. And here’s a little teaser: it was her desire to help others that ultimately brought her closer to Bobby, her husband. I’ll leave the rest for you to discover as you read how that story unfolded.

We all know Great Falls is full of talent, and now there’s an exciting stage to show it o . The annual Great Falls Talent Show is here, and you’ll find all the details inside the magazine. It’s one of those events that reminds us just how special this community really is.

And while you’re flipping through, don’t miss the upcoming Masquerade Ball hosted by the Women’s Club of Great Falls Scholarship Fund. It’s an evening of fun and networking—with a purpose. By attending, you’re directly supporting education and helping our kids build stronger futures. That’s community at its best.

As for Valentine’s Day—you know me. I don’t believe in buying something just because it’s expected. The best gifts are your time, your presence, and showing up for the people you love. But if you do want to say “I love you” with something special, diamonds from Helvetia Jewelry never fail.

Wishing you a month filled with love, connection, and community.

Happy Valentine’s Day,

FROM THE SOCIAL DESK

February is about connection, care, and the stories we share. Thank you for being part of this community.

For the February issue of Great Falls Living, a month that naturally invites reflection on love, connection, and care, we turn our focus to a woman whose life’s work is defined by intention at home, in her practice, and within her community. For Afsoun Razmazma, owner of Technique

Aesthetic and Wellness, wellness is not a trend or a luxury. It is a deeply personal commitment to showing up fully for others while learning to honor oneself along the way.

Afsoun’s calling to healthcare emerged early. Even without a family background in medicine, she felt a natural pull toward helping others. Volunteering at her local hospital and enrolling in medical-focused courses during high school confirmed what she already sensed: nursing was her path. Over time, that calling evolved into advanced practice, but the core motivation remained unchanged, a desire to make a meaningful impact in people’s lives.

That same desire to help others ultimately led her to

Bobby. They met through friends and were drawn to one another by a shared passion for service. Today, she and her husband, Dr. Bobby Razmazma, a specialized pediatric dentist anesthesiologist, share a deep understanding of responsibility and care.

Bobby works across Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia, providing anesthesia services for children who require extensive dental treatment. Their shared foundation in patient safety and clinical excellence creates mutual respect and balance within their marriage. With two demanding careers, Afsoun and Bobby are intentional about protecting family time and staying actively involved in their children’s daily lives. Unplugging comes through travel, family game nights, movie nights, and quiet moments together that create calm amid busy schedules.

Their family comes to life through their two children, Leyli and Liyam, who bring energy, humor, and perspective into daily life. Leyli, ten, shares her mother’s compassion and loves to dance, while Liyam mirrors his father’s thoughtful and analytical nature and never turns down a game of chess. Together, they cultivate a fun, light, and loving family dynamic shaped by curiosity and adventure. Travel plays a central role in their lives, o ering opportunities to reconnect and explore the world together. Balancing business and motherhood has not been without challenges, but finding a rhythm that allows Afsoun to grow professionally while

remaining present at home has been deeply rewarding. Afsoun grew up in Centreville, Virginia, the daughter of Iranian immigrants who arrived in the United States as college students carrying both ambition and resilience. Those values became the foundation of the woman she is today, driven, compassionate, and guided by purpose rather than circumstance. Wanting to pass those same values on to her children has been a constant source of motivation throughout her entrepreneurial journey. She hopes they witness what commitment and resilience look like in action and grow up proud of the life she intentionally built.

With more than fifteen years of experience as a Board Certified Nurse Practitioner, Afsoun’s career has spanned intensive care units, family practice, and now aesthetic and wellness medicine. Each chapter shaped her philosophy of care. The ICU taught her vigilance, precision, and an unwavering respect for patient safety. Family practice reinforced the importance of continuity, trust, and seeing patients as whole individuals rather than cases. Together, these experiences formed a patient-centered approach grounded in ethics, transparency, and responsibility, principles that guide every aspect of her work today.

Technique Aesthetic and Wellness was born during a pivotal moment. In the early months of COVID, Afsoun felt a strong

calling to return to the workplace and help people heal not only physically, but emotionally. At the same time, she was navigating motherhood and redefining her own sense of purpose beyond home life. She saw a need in the industry for honesty and balance, for aesthetic medicine that enhances rather than exaggerates. Her vision was clear: to create a space where patients feel informed, respected, and genuinely cared for, and where wellness is approached holistically.

Today, Afsoun defines wellness as an intentional choice. Many of her patients arrive at a moment when they are finally ready to prioritize themselves. Her role, as she sees it, is to support that decision with thoughtful care and treatments aligned with each individual’s goals. In a field often influenced by trends, she remains deeply committed to ethical practice, recommending only what serves a patient’s long term well being.

February, a month devoted to love, feels especially fitting for the Razmazma family. Their Valentine’s Day traditions center on inclusion and warmth. Bobby and Liyam head to the store to pick out flowers for Afsoun and Leyli, leaving heartfelt notes behind. A Valentine’s Day fairy visits the home, delivering small gifts and letters reminding the children that they are loved and encouraging kindness. What once was a couple’s night out has evolved into a family celebration, with everyone claiming each other as their Valentine.

For Afsoun, love is not reserved for special occasions. It is expressed through presence, generosity, and intention, whether nurturing family traditions, investing in friendships, or giving back to those who support her. In this season of life, love also means self-care, ensuring that each member of her family feels valued and supported. Professionally, that same care is reflected in the calm and tranquility of her practice. Patients often remark on the sense of peace they feel the moment they walk through the door, a feeling carefully cultivated in a world that often feels overwhelming.

Living and working in the Great Falls community has deepened that sense of purpose. Serving the same community she calls home allows Afsoun to be fully invested, whether supporting local organizations, seeing familiar faces in everyday moments, or contributing to the town’s collective well-being. Her goal extends beyond treatments. She hopes that every patient leaves feeling renewed, confident, and at ease, carrying that sense of calm into their daily lives.

Looking back, Afsoun is most proud of the life she has built with intention. Every decision, personal and professional, has been guided by purpose and hard work. Motherhood and marriage have strengthened her empathy, teaching her how to meet people where they are and honor the trust placed in her, especially in a field where care is deeply personal.

As she looks to the future, Afsoun is energized by growth within both her practice and her family. She looks forward to introducing new services that further integrate wellness and holistic care, while also witnessing her children step into new phases of life. Through it all, joy remains found in the ordinary moments: mornings with her family, meaningful connections with patients and sta , and the quiet satisfaction of knowing she is present, both at home and at work.

If those closest to her were to describe her, Afsoun hopes they would say she leads with empathy, works with integrity, and creates a life guided by kindness and purpose. In February, and in every season, her story is a reminder that true wellness begins with care for others, for family, and for oneself.

Community

en's Dentistry & Orthodontics

February is a month that celebrates love, and in pediatric dentistry, love shows up every day through care, patience, and a commitment to the communities we serve. At Island Children’s Dentistry, our mission goes beyond teeth. We believe that healthy smiles grow best when children feel supported, encouraged, and surrounded by a community

Giving back has always been at the heart of what we do. One of the causes closest to my heart is Give Kids a Smile, a national program that provides free dental care to underserved children. I am honored to serve as co-chair of the Northern Virginia Executive Committee for the 2025–2026 term, helping ensure that more children have access to the oral healthcare they deserve. A healthy smile has the power to boost confidence, improve overall health, and open doors for a brighter future.

© Best Version Media

Each February, in celebration of National Children’s Dental Health Month, our team also visits local schools to make learning about oral health fun and engaging. Through stories, music, hands-on demonstrations, and even a few puppet friends, we teach children the importance of brushing, flossing, and making tooth-friendly choices, lessons that can last a lifetime.

Our involvement extends beyond classrooms and clinics. We proudly support local school 5Ks, children’s plays, sports events, and community initiatives that encourage kids to stay active, confident, and connected. Additionally, I volunteer with the International Esperanza Project, providing dental care to underprivileged children in Guatemala, reinforcing my belief that every child, regardless of location, deserves quality care.

At the end of the day, dentistry is about people. When we come together as a community to support our children, their smiles and their futures shine even brighter.

A Good Operator vs. A Good Owner

If you are a business owner, chances are you are very good at running your company, and if you’ve been in business more than 5

You know your customers, your people, and your numbers. You're likely involved in decisions every day, and the business works because you are paying attention. These qualities are not flaws; they’re key characteristics necessary to build wildly successful companies.

But there is an important distinction that many owners never stop to examine: the skills that make you a strong operator are not the same skills that make you a strong owner. Because:

• A good operator knows how to run a business.

• A good owner knows how to build one that lasts without them.

Operators live in execution. They manage day to day, they put out fires, close deals, oversee sta , and ensure customers are taken care of!

When something breaks, they fix it. When performance dips, they step in & business moves forward because of their direct involvement.

Owners think at a di erent altitude. They step back and view the business as a system rather than a series of tasks or a baby who’s reliant on them for survival.

Their focus is not on today’s issues; they look at their organization from a di erent angle, looking at things like repeatability, predictability, and risk.

They consider things like

• What happens if I step away for a month?

• Who makes decisions when I am not available?

• Where is the business fragile?

• What would make a buyer hesitate?

Operators optimize for control.

Owners optimize for leverage.

In many cases, control feels responsible. It feels like leadership… But too much control creates dependency, and dependency limits value.

On the flip side, leverage requires trust, documentation, and structure. It means building systems that work even when you are not present and people who can perform without constant oversight.

This is where many founders unknowingly trap themselves. They believe their involvement is the business’s greatest strength. In reality, it is often its greatest risk. The more indispensable you are, the harder the business is to sell, scale, or step away from.

Buyers do not pay a premium for e ort or sacrifice. They pay for predictability. They want clean financials, durable margins, leadership depth, and systems that do not rely on one person’s memory or relationships.

The shift from operator to owner is not about working less. It is about working di erently.

Operators create income.

Owners create equity.

And the businesses that command the strongest valuations are almost always built by owners who learned when to stop operating and start owning.

If you'd like to learn more about how to begin optimizing your business and become the owner you've dreamed of, LET'S CONNECT!

Judith Peck is an artist who paints meaning as much as form.

A Washington, DC area allegorical figurative painter, Peck has devoted her life’s work to exploring history and healing through art that invites both reflection and connection.

Now living in Great Falls for the past five years, after raising her family in Vienna, Peck found inspiration close to home in her recent series, The Gravitas of Trees. Centered on a single, enduring sycamore at Riverbend Regional Park, the series grew from the same deeply personal approach that defines her work. Peck often

As she painted, the sycamore revealed itself as a microcosm of the world we share and a mirror of the human experience, steadfast yet vulnerable. The series has been widely recognized, earning awards, solo museum exhibitions, and features in major art publications.

Peck’s work has been shown nationally and internationally and is held in numerous public and private collections. Yet at its core, her art remains grounded in a simple belief: that awe, nature, and shared love of nature can unite us.

Through her work, Peck o ers Great Falls not just art, but a quiet meditation on resilience, responsibility, and connection.

An Invitation to an Evening of Purpose and Promise

True to the spirit of community that defines Great Falls, the Women’s Club of Great Falls Scholarship Foundation invites friends, neighbors, and supporters to take part in an evening where elegance meets impact.

On May 1, 2026, the Scholarship Foundation will host its signature fundraising event, the Masquerade Ball, at River Bend Country Club. More than a formal celebration, the Masquerade Ball is a powerful expression of collective generosity, bringing together community leaders, donors, and scholarship recipients in support of students striving to achieve higher education despite rising tuition costs, transportation challenges, and family responsibilities.

Each ticket, sponsorship, and donation directly fuels lifechanging scholarships for deserving students across Northern Virginia—helping them remain enrolled, complete their degrees, and move forward with confidence toward their futures. The evening serves as both a celebration of educational possibility and a reminder that when a community invests in its students, the impact lasts for generations.

Those interested in becoming a student sponsor or event sponsor are encouraged to connect with the Foundation at info@womensclubgsf.org and be part of a mission that opens doors and changes lives.

GREAT FALLS TALENT SHOW

There is something quietly magical about watching a child step onto a stage, heart pounding, eyes bright, ready to share a piece of who they are. This February, the Great Falls community will have the chance to witness many of those moments when the Optimist Club hosts its first annual Talent Show, an evening designed to celebrate courage, creativity, and the joy of trying something new.

Taking place on Saturday, February 7th at The Grange in Great Falls, the Talent Show invites children and teens ages 3 through 18 to participate in a welcoming, supportive environment where every performer is encouraged to shine. Whether your child loves to dance, sing, act, perform magic, tumble, play an instrument, or showcase a unique talent all their own, this event is about possibility, not perfection. If a talent does not fit neatly into a category, participants are welcome to simply share what they can do.

Performances will be scheduled on a first come, first served basis, with mandatory dress rehearsals held on February 5th for younger performers and February 6th for older participants. These rehearsals give children a chance to feel comfortable on stage, practice with music or props, and build confidence before the big day.

Families are encouraged to register their children by completing the online form at GreatFallsOptimistVA.org, where full details and talent categories are listed. Community members are also warmly invited to attend and cheer from the audience, because applause and encouragement matter just as much as the performance itself.

For questions or special performance needs, families may contact Sheela Rao at 703-624-4922. The goal is simple and heartfelt: to ensure every child’s experience on stage feels positive, empowering, and unforgettable.

Sometimes the greatest talent of all is the courage to try.

Back to Work Power Dressing: Confidence, Reimagined

January marks a quiet but meaningful shift. After the holiday season—filled with travel, family time, and moments of pause—we return to our routines with a renewed sense of purpose. Getting back to work is not just about schedules and responsibilities; it’s about reconnecting with ourselves. The right kind of power dressing o ers that subtle boost—helping us feel alive, confident, and ready to step back into our roles with clarity and intention.

The Back to Work Power Dressing Capsule from House of Alkara was created with this moment in mind. Designed for women who move through their days with purpose, the collection brings together short silk jackets, chic and comfortable silk dresses, and handcrafted jewelry that work in quiet harmony.

The jackets, crafted in raw silk, jacquard silk, and burnt velvet, o er structure without rigidity. Their cropped silhouettes frame the body e ortlessly, adding polish while remaining light and wearable for long days. These are pieces that lend presence without overpowering—refined, versatile, and grounded in craftsmanship. The silk dresses in this capsule are designed to feel as good as they look. Fluid yet tailored, they o er ease, movement, and comfort while maintaining a clean, sophisticated line. Worn on their own or layered with a jacket, they adapt seamlessly from workday meetings to evening engagements, allowing the wearer to define her own rhythm.

Jewelry completes the narrative. Crafted in sterling silver with gold plating, the pendant sets are designed as integral elements of the look. One set, with vibrant tourmaline and blue topaz, and another in amethyst and peridot with a hammered texture, brings depth, balance, and meaning to the ensemble. The hammered textures echo the handwoven quality of the jewelry, creating a visual and tactile connection between metal and textile. These are not overpowering statements but intentional accents that ground the look.

The Back to Work Power Dressing Capsule is about dressing with intention—choosing pieces that support confidence, comfort, and presence. It is designed for women who value thoughtful design, longevity, and the quiet strength that comes from wearing something that truly feels like you.

More Than Words

A true Valentine’s gift does not need explanation.

It speaks before it is opened.

It carries love without limits, loyalty without conditions, and passion without apology. At its best, it is a reflection of the giver—revealed without a single word.

This is why jewelry has endured as humanity’s most intimate language. Long before love letters and grand speeches, jewels carried messages that could not safely be spoken aloud. In gold and stone, emotion found permanence.

Among all symbols, none is more charged than the heart-shaped diamond. For centuries, jewels were not merely adornments; they were instruments of diplomacy, devotion, and power. Monarchs exchanged them with intention, understanding that every cut, every stone, and every design carried meaning.

In 1562, Mary, Queen of Scots, sent her cousin, Elizabeth I, a heart-shaped diamond ring. It was a rare and daring choice—a diamond carved into one of the most technically demanding shapes, reserved for moments of consequence.

Historians believe the unspoken message embedded in that jewel was clear and vulnerable:

I place my fate in your hands.

In that single object lived hope, trust, kinship, and courage. The heart-shaped diamond became forever linked with emotion that transcends words—a symbol of devotion o ered even in uncertainty. Long before Valentine’s Day cards and red roses, it stood as an aspirational expression of love and loyalty at the highest level. Why Diamonds Endure

Diamonds are not simply beautiful. They are indestructible. They resist time, pressure, and fracture—just as the deepest bonds do.

To give a diamond is to make a statement:

What I feel is not fleeting. What I promise is lasting.

The heart-shaped cut elevates that promise further. It transforms strength into tenderness. Power into vulnerability. It is not chosen casually; it is chosen intentionally.

Smart Use of Home Equity

For households with significant home equity, a Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC) can be a strategic financial tool when used wisely.

A HELOC lets you tap into your home's equity as needed, typically at variable rates, without selling investments. It's useful for seizing opportunities, managing cash flow around tax season, funding home improvements, or consolidating expensive debt while keeping your portfolio intact.

The benefits: relatively low interest rates, flexibility to borrow only what you need, and interest charges only on what you use, making it e icient capital management. However, consider that interest rates can rise, it may a ect your debt-to-income ratio, and you're using your home as collateral.

Deciding if a HELOC makes sense requires looking at your complete financial picture: cash needs, expected investment returns, tax implications, and comfort with risk. When paired with a solid repayment plan and integrated into your wealth strategy, a HELOC can provide flexibility without compromising your long-term financial goals.
