RICHARD WHITEHEAD MBE ACHIEVES NEW WORLD RECORD AT

MILANO MARATHON!

Richard Whitehead MBE

Milano, Italy - Sunday 12 April 2026Richard Whitehead MBE, Paralympic gold medallist, world record holder, and global champion for diversity and inclusion, has once again rewritten the record books. Crossing the finish line of the Wizz Air Milano Marathon, Richard set a new World Record, completing the marathon in 2:40:47 and breaking his own previous world record.

Richard held the former record from the Chicago Marathon in 2024, and his performance in Milan cements his position as the fastest marathon runner in the world and the World Marathon Record Holder for athletes with bilateral knee amputations.

This achievement comes on the heels of an extraordinary 2025, during which Richard completed 20 marathons across the globe, a challenge that concluded in New York, the city where his marathon journey first began in 2004. But for Richard, that milestone was never a finale, it was a foundation. Now, just months into 2026, he has already completed four marathons worldwide and added a new World Record to his legacy.

Reflecting on the moment, Richard said: “A milestone like this only fuels my drive and determination further, slowing down definitely isn’t in the plan!

I know the power of visibility, and I’ve seen how someone like me, living with a very physical disability, can inspire others to believe in their own potential.”

While Richard continues to be the fastest amputee marathon runner in history, his mission has never been defined by times or titles. For him, every race and life is about possibility.

“I hope everything I do embodies courage and inclusion,” he said. “I want to proudly advocate for people living with disabilities and inspire others to believe that they too can achieve the extraordinary.”

Across every challenge he takes on and throughout his work, Richard champions the belief that sport is a powerful platform, one that can break down barriers, promote wellbeing, build community, and drive meaningful social change. His energy, optimism, and authenticity continue to motivate people of all ages and abilities.

“I see my disability as a resource, not a hindrance,” Richard added. “I want to help others see that they can make a difference, and that everyone has a gift to nurture and a story worth telling.”

COMMUNITY QUILT TO BE HEARTWARMING to 250,000 Lives Changed by Framework

Hundreds of social groups, schools and care homes are helping to create a community quilt for Framework to represent 25 years of working together to end homelessness.

More than 80 groups - from care homes to schoolshave already signed up to be part of the collaborative art project with the charity calling out for more to get involved.

The 250 individual panels will be professionally stitched together to create a powerful tribute to the 250,000 lives changed by Framework over the last 25 years.

Anyone can take partindividuals, families, schools, organisations, supporters - to make an individual panel with the charity supplying free starter packs. The panels will form one large, meaningful artwork to be hung as a beautiful tapestry.

Loren Shore, Community Fundraiser, Framework, said: “A quilt is more than an artwork - it is a symbol of warmth, safety and security. For many of the people Framework supports, these are things that have been missing. Rough sleeping often means facing cold, isolation and insecurity, sometimes

with nothing more than a cardboard box for protection. In this context, the quilt becomes a powerful visual metaphor for what everyone deserves: warmth, care, dignity and a sense of belonging.”

The quilt will be showcased for the first time at Framework’s annual Carol Service at Southwell Minster in December, followed by Lincoln Cathedral and a Nottingham city centre location.

2026 is a year-long celebration of the collective power of people coming together to help others in need with events and exhibitions to share stories of hope and transformation.

HAMZA YASSIN My life behind the lens

Wildlife cameraman and presenter – and Strictly Come Dancing champion – Hamza Yassin is on a new adventure to help people experience the wonder of the natural world as he hits the road with his debut tour.

Hamza is known for presenting Hamza’s Hidden Wild Isles, Hamza’s Strictly Birds of Prey, on Countryfile and Animal Park, winning Strictly with his partner Jowita Przystał in 2022, and the CBeebies’ TV series Ranger Hamza. He launched his tour Hamza Yassin – My Life Behind The Lens in January, and due to popular demand has added a new series of 24 dates in April and May.

Find out more about Hamza Yassin – My Life Behind The Lens as we chat to Hamza about tour life, his inspiration and how someone who doesn’t like crowds signed up for one of the world’s biggest TV shows…

“I love what I do,” a beaming Hamza Yassin says at the start of our chat. “I’m one of the luckiest men ever. I get to do what I love most; film wildlife and have an incredible time doing it.”

Hamza has loved the great outdoors and being in nature from his earliest days –growing up in Sudan before moving to the UK aged eight. And he says that love is no different to any other child – the difference being he has retained the ‘childlike wonder’.

“Tell me any child under five years old who isn’t interested in animals, being outside, enjoying the natural world. I am a child at heart and have just managed to keep that feeling,” he explains.

“I had no more passion about nature and animals

than any other child. But I never had it taken out of me. You know, children aren’t scared of spiders, not until they notice an adult being scared of them. Perhaps in general we are very good at taking that passion away from kids; ‘Stop looking out of the window, learn your maths, physics. Wash your hands, stop playing with those snails…’ Kids should be given the opportunity to be outdoors as much as possible.

“Many adults don’t give children the opportunity to stay in love with nature as they grow up, but I was given the opportunity to be childlike, to spend my time outdoors investigating wildlife, to follow my dream. The love of animals is there for everyone.”

Hamza’s inspiration came, unsurprisingly, from David Attenborough’s wonderful programmes, and perhaps more surprisingly Steve Irwin’s more hands-on, gungho approach. They ‘lit the spark’ for Hamza to make that love of nature his profession.

“I thought ‘I don’t look like David Attenborough or Steve Irwin, so I can’t be them – but I can be the man behind the camera filming them’, and that’s what I worked for,” he said. “I really do

love nature and wanted to share it. From a young age, I heard David speaking so wonderfully about animals and nature, and then I’d change channels and see Steve literally hugging a crocodile… I grew up seeing crocs in Sudan, but we didn’t hug them!

“And Sir Peter Scott, who founded the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), also inspired me. He was the son of Scott of the Antarctic, and his dad, on his deathbed told his wife to make sure their child goes out in nature. That was his number one message at that moment and look at what it inspired!”

For Hamza, going on tour gives him the opportunity to share his inspirations, to answer the questions he’s most commonly asked when out and about –and to give an important message.

“The tour is about my life, in different ways,” he explains. “I get asked a lot of the same questions, and when the opportunity came up to share those answers in one place to more people, I liked the idea, so here I am going around the country explaining how things are done ‘Behind The Lens’.

“I talk about how I first fell in love with the natural world, about my first camera, about the camera I have now and other technology we use. The close encounters and near-death experiences. I go through my trials and tribulations. You know this job of being a wildlife cameraman is definitely a lifestyle – you can be away from home eight months a year.

“But overall, and the message that I hope to bring to people through the tour is ‘hope’: Hope about the natural world. There is a lot of doom and gloom out there at the moment, not just around the natural world – about everything, and it’s understandable. But despite all that, there is still hope and I want to share that with people. So that’s really what it’s about. And giggling – there’s always a bit of a giggle in there!”, he adds for anyone worried it might all be a bit serious.

Hamza has made his home on the remote west coast of Scotland, and hasn’t been tempted to move to a more central

location to pursue his career – in fact, as a self-confessed “hermit”, you wonder if life on tour is a challenge?

“I’ve always felt like a hermit when I’m in a city,” he admits. “I struggle in large crowds. Yes, I danced in front of 16million people on live TV and I go and talk in front of a thousand people in a theatre, but I have control in a way in those situations. I like being with people, don’t get me wrong, but only in situations where I feel comfortable or when I can take myself away if I need to.

“That doesn’t mean I think cities are bad, just that they aren’t good for me. I do believe life is better, healthier in the countryside.

“In the city, you can sleep eight hours, get up and spend an hour traveling to work, spend 9am to 5pm in an office, another hour traveling home, then maybe walk your dog quickly, before sitting down in front of the TV every day. Sitting down all day. That’s not what we are meant for – people need dirt under their fingernails!”

One of the topics on Hamza’s list of most asked questions is, of course, his glitterball-winning appearance on Strictly Come Dancing in 2022.

Although already established as a popular children’s presenter as Ranger Hamza on CBeebies’ series Let’s Go For A Walk and Eco Quest, and known for appearances on Countryfile and Animal Park, it was his glitterballwinning turn on Strictly which made Hamza a household name.

But you have to wonder why someone who is happiest when away from cities and in the great outdoors, agreed to take part in one of the biggest TV show franchises in the world.

“I thought I was going out in week one, and I would just be that ‘nature dude’ who once went on Strictly Come Dancing,” he says, smiling. “I dedicated my week one dance to Mother Nature, wearing a pink suit and looking like a flamingo, watching birds from a boat.

“As the weeks went on, I danced a quickstep to On Top Of The World – from the top of the world with all the special effects of

the North Pole and polar bears, I celebrated Mother Nature, Mother Africa and my mother in another dance. I just thought no one knows who I am, but I am having a great time dancing with my professional partner, the gorgeous Jowita, and I have an amazing platform to speak about the natural world, so I gave it my best.

“It wasn’t my usual TV environment, which, up until then, had been Countryfile and CBeebies; kids were writing in saying ‘He’s not called Hamza Yassin, he’s Ranger Hamza!’.

“I definitely didn’t expect to win it! With Jowita, we were doing it for each other… It was her first year so she was new to it, and each week was just a blessing. It was really special to bring wildlife to that huge audience and the people who found me on Strictly have now followed me into the natural world.

Hamza is also hugely grateful for the opportunities Strictly brought him. “I wouldn’t have thought about touring before Strictly. I did speaking events, but that’s different to a full solo tour like My Life Behind The Lens – but having done the Strictly tour, I understood more what it was like to be in front of a huge live audience.

“I have a lot to thank that show for; it changed my life and I am so thankful to the people who have come on this journey with me, who follow me on social media, who watch the documentaries –with record viewing figures!

“And what has been brilliant so far with my own tour, is realising this is a chance for me to say ‘thank you’ to people who have supported me, through Strictly and everything I’ve done since.

“A lot of the people coming to the tour are people who were converted to nature loving people when I did Strictly, but I hope they are bringing other people with them who are yet to be converted, and they become fans through the show. Seeing people face to face like this is awesome.

“Touring so far is good, especially being able to spread the love of Mother Nature; It’s like my version of a pilgrimage and spreading the word.”

A fresh pick for city living at Nottingham’s

Fruit Market

A first look inside the new phase of Nottingham’s award-winning Fruit Market development has been revealed, with the launch of a new showhome that also includes a showcase of local artists.

Delivered by igloo Regeneration, the UK’s first B Corp certified real estate business, the £15 million Fruit Market development sets a new benchmark for sustainable city centre living in Nottingham.

Award winning local architect, Letts Wheeler, has designed modern townhouses clustered around landscaped communal gardens intended to foster a strong sense of community and promote diverse living. The emphasis on design rooted in community, such as shared garden spaces, reflects wider trends – with studies showing that more than six in ten

people feel a strong sense of belonging to their local area and actively value community when choosing where to live.

Set within Sneinton Market, the development plays a key role in the area’s continued success story. Long known as one of Nottingham’s most creative quarters, Sneinton Market has become a hub for independent shops, studios, cafés and food venues, attracting creatives, young professionals and buyers seeking a more sustainable urban lifestyle with less reliance on car use.

The homes at Fruit Market have a

distinctive contemporary architectural design and carefully considered materials. High-quality fittings and fixtures are used throughout, alongside features like underfloor heating and air-source heat pumps that prioritise long-term performance, comfort and energy efficiency.

The official launch of the new showhome comes as phase two nears completion, following the full sell-out of the first phase. The new homes are expected to be ready for occupation from the end of April 2026.

Once finished, Fruit Market will comprise

39 homes in total. Phase one consists of 13 homes and phase two will deliver a further 26, including 22 three-bedroom townhouses priced from £395,000 and 4 two-bedroom duplex homes priced from £295,000.

Alec Hamlin, Development Director and igloo lead for the Fruit Market development, said the scheme challenges traditional perceptions of new-build housing.

He said: “These homes are genuinely different from what people might expect from typical ‘new-builds’. We use high-end products such as NorDan windows, combining timber frames with aluminium cladding, because aesthetics, longevity and quality really matter to us. We are focused on creating homes that feel distinctive and that contribute positively to the wider neighbourhood.”

The Fruit Market has already received national recognition for its design-led approach, having won a prestigious Housing Design Award in 2024 from

a field of more than 100 competing schemes nationally. The development has also been highlighted by Nottingham City Council as a goldstandard example of how sustainable housing can support regeneration while delivering high-quality homes.

Alec added: “Nottingham has a strong identity as a student city, but projects like this show how it can also attract and retain a diverse mix of residents.

The Fruit Market demonstrates how thoughtful design, sustainability and shared green space can come together to create places people genuinely want to live and thrive. It offers a blueprint for other cities looking to deliver low-energy homes in urban settings.”

The Fruit Market’s sales agents, William H Brown, will be conducting pre-booked tours of the Brook Street show home from April and will also be holding a public open day on Saturday, May 2. igloo has partnered with local gallery, Beam, to showcase work from local artists in the home.

Grandchildren: Understanding the Law and the Options Available

At Nelsons, we regularly work with grandparents who unexpectedly find themselves cut off from grandchildren they love dearly. Grandparents often play a vital and stabilising role in a child’s upbringing— offering emotional security, practical support, and a consistent presence. Yet when parents separate or wider family relationships break down, that bond can be abruptly severed, sometimes overnight.

There are an increasing number of grandparents losing contact following the breakdown of parental relationships. This loss can be deeply distressing, especially where grandparents have had a significant caregiving role.

The overriding priority of the family justice system is on safeguarding and the welfare of the child involved. This can in some cases mean that extended family ties—however important—become secondary in complex or highly conflicted cases.

Do Grandparents Have an Automatic Right to See Their Grandchildren?

In short, no. Under English law, grandparents do not have an automatic legal right to contact with their grandchildren. If arrangements cannot be agreed within the family, grandparents typically need to seek the court’s permission (referred to as leave to apply) before they can request an order regulating contact.

How Does the Court Decide Whether to Grant Permission?

In considering whether to give grandparents permission to apply, the court looks at:

• The nature of the application,

• The grandparents’ existing connection with the child, and

• Any risk that the application may disrupt the child’s life to the extent of causing harm.

This ensures that cases proceed only where they serve a genuine welfare purpose.

What Matters Most If the Court Allows the Application to Proceed?

Once leave has been granted, the focus shifts entirely to the child’s welfare, guided by the statutory welfare checklist. Factors considered include:

• The child’s emotional and developmental needs,

• Their wishes and feelings (depending on age and maturity),

• The likely impact of any proposed changes, and

• Any safeguarding issues.

Evidence of a stable, positive, and consistent relationship between grandparent and child can significantly strengthen an application for contact.

Common Challenges Grandparents Face

Grandparents navigating this area often encounter several difficulties:

1. Sudden Loss of Contact

Many are caught in the crossfire of parental disputes, despite not being part of the conflict.

2. The Additional Legal Hurdle Requiring permission to apply—something parents do not need—can make the process feel more complex and emotionally overwhelming.

3. Navigating the Legal System

Forms, hearings, safeguarding checks, and gathering evidence can be challenging, especially for those unfamiliar with family law procedures.

4. Mediation Requirements

In most cases, grandparents must attend a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting (MIAM) before applying to court, unless an exemption applies.

What If One Parent Is Absent or Has Died?

Where a parent is absent or has passed away, grandparents often become the child’s last remaining link to one side of their family. Maintaining that connection can provide:

• A sense of identity and heritage,

• Stability during periods of grief or upheaval,

• Emotional continuity, and

• Valuable ongoing support.

Courts generally recognise the important role grandparents can play in such circumstances. However, the central question remains the same: What is in the child’s best interests?

What Types of Contact Can the Court Order?

A Child Arrangements Order can set out:

• Direct contact (face to face time),

• Indirect contact (letters, phone calls, video calls),

• Structured or supervised arrangements, or

• Holiday and extended contact.

What Should Grandparents Do if They Are Being Prevented From Seeing Their Grandchildren?

• Approach the parents, if safe to do so, with a calm, child focused message.

• Attend a MIAM and explore mediation as an alternative to court.

• Seek early legal advice to understand the process and evidential requirements.

• Apply to court as a last resort if other avenues fail.

Final Thoughts

At Nelsons, we understand how emotional and distressing it can be for grandparents suddenly removed from a grandchild’s life. Our specialist family solicitors support grandparents through mediation, assist with preparing strong applications, and represent them sensitively in court— particularly in cases involving bereavement or absent parents.

If you are a grandparent concerned about contact, we are here to help you understand your options and work towards a positive, child focused outcome.

NEW MENU HERALDS THE ARRIVAL OF SPRING

Marco Pierre White’s Nottingham-based restaurant has launched a new Spring / Summer menu that’s perfect for the longer, lighter and slightly warmer days ahead.

The arrival of the menu introduces a new chapter of flavour that features a range of fresh and vibrant dishes. Among the highlights are creations incorporating Hawkstone IPA, the beer that’s risen to prominence on Jeremy Clarkson’s hit TV show, ‘Clarkson’s Farm’.

Guests looking to go out and enjoy a meal that’s inspired by the spring and summer can now enjoy dishes that are in keeping with the time of year. Using ingredients that are fresh, simple and classically prepared the new range of seasonal specials sit seamlessly alongside the main à la carte.

The menu still retains the ever-popular range of steak dishes including a range of inspired sharing steaks such as the Porterhouse T-Bone, Chateaubriand and Tomahawk.

In addition, a two-course, set menu for £20.95 provides exceptional value for money dining and even includes steak frites as one of the dishes available. Called the ‘1961’ in homage to Pierre White’s birth year, it’s perfect for business lunches, early evening dining or for those possibly heading to the theatre or cinema.

Jolanta Szulczynska, Food and Beverage Manager said: “It’s always exciting to bring out a new menu. It features a mouth-watering mix of classic dishes perfect for the longer, lighter days and has all the hallmarks of one of Britain’s greatest chefs.

“People love to eat out as it allows them to escape from their daily routines. The new spring / summer menu is focused around our belief that good quality food should be an experience that is shared and enjoyed with friends and family and where escapism is the final ingredient.

“What guests sometimes fail to realise as well is that all our menus come direct from Marco personally, who devises the dishes with our food team. He then cooks each dish to check that it tastes great before signing it off ready for the menu.

“It’s almost as if you’ve had your

meal cooked by the great man personally.

“The 1961 set- menu is also exceptional value for money and is great for those looking for exceptional value for money dining. Now that we’re also serving Hawkstone Lager and IPA, it made perfect sense that we include it in some of the dishes. I’m sure both Jeremy Clarkson and Marco would approve as will many of our guests.

“We’re now looking forward to welcoming guests new and old and to show them what dining out Marco Pierre White style is all about.”

Outdoor bars with screens have been added, and the all-new Marston’s ‘Order & Pay’ app will now allow locals to order from their tables, never missing a minute of the action.

The Limekiln has been decorated with local sports memorabilia. It is on the hunt for photographs and merchandise, giving pub-goers the chance to fill the walls and celebrate the achievements of local sports stars and teams, past and present.

The pub will show all key sporting fixtures, including football, rugby, cricket, tennis, F1, darts, horse racing, you name it, they will show it! Regulation dart boards and pub games will provide entertainment well after the final whistle, with new competition

leagues and ‘free to play’ recreational sessions taking place throughout the week.

A new range of bar food has been introduced, perfect for half-time and for sharing. The ‘Match Day Menu’ will feature hand-held bites, such as chicken wings and nachos, sitting alongside pub favourites such as fish and chips and burgers. The Limekiln has also refreshed its range of drinks, and all draught beer is available in 2-pint cups.

There will also be the chance for local sports teams to get their hands on a ‘Black Card’, securing them endless chips when they visit for team drinks, and even more rewards if they win their game. The new Grandstand concept has been introduced after industry research* revealed that 8.5M consumers have watched sports games at the pub, and 86% of sports fans say that they

watch games at sports pubs due to a livelier atmosphere, better screens, sound, and connecting with friends and family.

Marston’s picked The Limekiln as one of the pubs to receive the Grandstand makeover due to its involvement with local sports teams, community groups and charities. The refurbishment has created a new and exciting proposition for local sports fans from Nottingham and beyond.

Pub Partners, Nicky and Dave, said: “From new screens and menus to involving the local community, we’re passionate about creating spaces where everyone feels welcome - whether they’re here for the match, a family meal, or to celebrate with their team after the final whistle.”

Watercress Recipes to Meet 2026 Trends

Trend reports for 2026 suggest a growing demand for protein rich foods, fibrous and gut healthy recipes, with inspiration from the Middle East and Mexico scoring highly.

One food that’s been ‘trending’ since the time of Hippocrates, however, is watercress. It ticks several of the boxes for 2026 – it’s naturally rich in protein, a source of fibre and, due to the plentiful polyphenols it contains which our gut microbiome loves, it’s great for gut health too.

What’s more watercress is regularly cited as the ‘healthiest vegetable’ thanks to its impressive perfect 100 score for nutrient density awarded by the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention. Raw watercress is rich in vitamins A (as beta carotene), C, and K1 and is a source of folate, vitamin B6, calcium and iron, making it the perfect ingredient to include.

And now is the best time to buy watercress as the UK season starts in May, continuing until late October or early November. The majority of UK watercress grows in Hampshire and Dorset in the original Victorian beds where it has flourished in flowing spring water for over 150 years, grown using strictly traditional methods. There’s even an annual festival in the Hampshire town of Alresford to mark the official start of the UK season – this year on Sunday 17 May.

Mini Prawn Tacos with Watercress Pico de Gallo

Ingredients:

• 150g peeled king prawns

• Juice of 1 lime

• 1 tbsp paprika

• 4 mini tortillas

• 60g watercress

• Spring onion, cut into fine slices

• ½ cucumber, cut into fine slices

• Lime wedges & coriander, to serve

For the Watercress Pico de Gallo:

• 200g Tomatoes, finely diced

• 1 Red onion, finely diced

• 1 clove garlic, finely chopped

• 20g Watercress, finely chopped

• 20g Coriander, finely chopped

• 1 Chilli pepper, finely diced

• Salt & pepper

• Lime Juice

Method:

1. In a bowl, toss the prawns in the lime juice, paprika and a generous pinch of salt. Grill these either on the hob or a hot BBQ for a couple of minutes on each side.

2. For the pico de gallo, simply combine all ingredients in a bowl.

3. Warm the tortillas for 30 seconds on each side in the same pan or grill that you used for the

prawns just before serving.

4. Layer each tortilla with watercress, prawns, spring onions, cucumber and a generous scoop of the pico de gallo salsa. Serve with a sprinkle of chopped coriander and a squirt of lime.

Mexican food is just so colourful! A sublime mixture of spices, herbs and veg topping off delicious, succulent prawns all wrapped in light fluffy tacos.

Eggs with Halloumi and Watercress

Ingredients:

• 400g tin mixed beans in water

• 2 eggs

• 80g watercress, roughly chopped.

• 2 garlic cloves, minced

• 1 tbsp paprika

• 1 tbsp tomato puree

• 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

• 200g passata

• 2tbsp sour cream

• 100g Halloumi, cubed

• Oil for cooking

Method:

1. Preheat the oven to 180˚. Heat a little oil in an ovenproof skillet (or a large frying pan with a lid) and fry the garlic. Add the beans (with the water they are in) and cook for a few minutes. Add the paprika, tomato puree, Worcestershire sauce and passata, simmer for 5 minutes.

2. Roughly crush the beans with a spoon to break them up, then add the watercress. Taste & season.

To celebrate the versatility of watercress and its universal appeal, The Watercress Company has developed some recipes in line with 2026 trends and the interest in Mexican and Middle Eastern flavours, which deliver on protein and fibre too.

3. Make 2 wells in the sauce and crack an egg into each one. Bake in the oven until the eggs are cooked (if using a pan with a lid, simply cover and keep on a medium-low heat until the eggs are cooked).

4. In a small pan, cook the halloumi chunks until golden brown. Once the eggs are cooked, dropped the cooked halloumi into the sauce and drizzle everything with the sour cream. You can also top with a little more paprika or some chilli sauce if you prefer things a little spicier!

Turkish Eggs with Garlic & Watercress Butter

Ingredients:

• 200g natural yoghurt

• 1-2 garlic cloves, minced

• 50g watercress leaves, chopped fine

• 2 eggs

• 2 tbsp butter

• 1 tbsp olive oil

• 2 tsp paprika

• Lemon juice

Method:

1. In a pan of boiling water, poach the eggs to your preference.

2. Meanwhile, warm the oil and butter in a pan, add the minced garlic and allow to infuse before adding the watercress and paprika.

3. Layer the yoghurt at the bottom of a bowl and serve the eggs on top, then drizzle with the butter sauce. Squeeze over fresh lemon juice and season to taste.

Hammer & Pincers

A brightly decorated, intimate restaurant run with natural warmth by its experienced owners, offering high-quality fine dining, set menus and the Grazing Menu.

I would normally try and include a photo of the place I review from the outside to give you a feel for the area and it’s surroundings. The Hammer and Pincers and February royally scuppered that plan. We visited on the wettest Friday in February (Happy Birthday to me!) and it is on a busy country road without a pavement. I will remark it was ‘seasonal and rural’ but had we been going to somewhere that wasn’t so widely praised I might have been more reluctant to leave the warmth of my house.

A friend had messaged me earlier in the week singing the praises of the set menu as it is very good value for money and I knew I would be able to get a good glass of wine so was excited. As soon as you walk in, the Hammer and Pincers is very understated and stylish, nothing shouts but there is a background hum of ‘this is all very nice isn’t it?’.

The host from World Service (RIP) is now at the Hammer and Pincers and I found a familiar face reassuring. When presented with 3 courses for £45 I was going to have three but agreed with The Northerner strategic ordering was needed so we could try as much of the menu as possible without the other feeling like their arm had been twisted.

We ordered (is it correct/proper to order pudding with starter and main when you know what you are going to have? I have always wondered) and both liked the pre-starter of a pakora with yoghurt. Was it too big for one mouthful? Yes. Did it matter? No, it isn’t a canape and we had cutlery.

The bread and butter was also warm, salty and a great way to start. I went for the cured and smoked sea trout for a starter which was so lightly flavoured it shouldn’t have worked well with the pickling and horseradish, but the kitchen found a beautiful balance and it never tripped in to too much heat or acidity.

The Northerners lamb ragu was

like a mouthful of soft comfort, the pasta had no bite left but the ragu and sheep’s cheese added a flavour complexity to the dish that kept it interesting. He was very happy.

I am a fussy bugger about potatoes (don’t like crushed, don’t like mashed) so The Northerner had the Sea bream and I went for the souffle for main. I was hoping after the ragu it would be the same kind of comfort, looking out the window as the sleet came down.

When it arrived I was a bit disappointed, it had height yes but there was only a smudge of sauce underneath it and a side of roasted (but no extra sauce) leeks on a separate dish. It is at this point I realised I now compare all souffles to that of Langar Hall. This one felt lacking, there wasn’t enough sauce to make it feel indulgent

I like eating out, trying new restaurants and being on the receiving end of great hospitality. I am a mum with 2 children (one baby, one 9 year old) so I include how the places I visit work for families. I have worked in bars, cafes, restaurants and pubs for most of my life. Good places should be supported, celebrated and shared.

NOTTINGHAM FOOD CRITIC

and that was really what I was after. The kitchen weren’t to know that. However, I would ask anyone sending that plate out the kitchen where the sauce was. The Northerner had a very competently cooked fish and mash but the dish lacked crunch or bite – by this point he’d had a lot of soft food. I am holding the Hammer and Pincers to the standard it whispers when you walk in and from the recommendation I had. Neither of these criticisms took each dish lower than an 8 out of 10 though.

We would normally share a pudding but ….. 3 courses for £45. I ordered the cheesecake and realised as it arrived the bit I like most about the cheesecake is the biscuit base. I knew the Basque cheesecake wouldn’t have one but in the past the creamy texture and burnt top made up for this, unfortunately this one had neither and felt a bit ‘eggy’. I missed the biscuit base as I was a bit daone with the lack of textures by this point. The cheesecake could have learnt a thing or two form the bread and butter pudding. The ‘light as air custard’ that surrounded it had been blowtorched so the taste of burnt sugar was the main feature, this was slightly at odds with the apricot sorbet. Burnt cream and citrus sorbet

did not make happy bedfellows and after we ate all the crunchy bits on the plate we left the rest.

We were bought a tiny teacake to finish the meal which was a generous end to a lovely lunch. When something starts well and gets less so towards the end you walk away with a lower opinion than if something starts badly and ends well. This combined with my personal truth that a pudding is as (if not more so) important than a main course meant it wasn’t until reviewing the meal as a whole I found myself reminiscing fondly.

Take a Break

British jewellery brand ChaLuMu was born from the founders’ own experiences of living with anxiety and PTSD. Founded by lifelong friends Megan Marlow and Natasha Makara, the brand grew out of their shared experience of navigating everyday life as two single mums while managing anxiety behind the scenes. For years, anxiety was something both

women quietly carried through daily life, moments of overwhelming thoughts, social anxiety and the constant feeling of being on edge. After discovering breathing necklaces, they began using them themselves during anxious moments. The concept worked, but the designs available felt very plain. So they redesigned them.

What began as a simple idea between two friends became ChaLuMu, a jewellery brand creating breathing necklaces designed to support anxious moments while still looking like beautiful everyday jewellery.

Each necklace is designed with a hollow pendant that allows the wearer to slowly exhale through it. This encourages slower breathing, a practice known to calm anxiety and widely recommended by health professionals as a way to help settle the body when anxious feelings begin to rise.

Many customers have also found the necklaces helpful when trying to break habits such as smoking, vaping or nail biting, using the necklace as a small physical reminder to pause and reset. ChaLuMu necklaces are worn by women across the UK and internationally, combining jewellery design with purpose

and built on the belief that you can be capable and anxious at the same time, and still be living your best life. The necklaces are often chosen as thoughtful gifts for daughters, sisters, friends and mothers looking for something both beautiful and meaningful.

For Megan and Natasha, the mission behind the brand is simple, to create jewellery that feels beautiful to wear while quietly supporting women through anxious moments in everyday life.

SHOPPING WITH PURPOSE

Charity shops are more than a standard feature on the UK high street. They play a vital role in supporting local communities and funding worthy causes, yet customers are becoming increasingly aware of the environmental benefits of charity shoppingas well as its social value.

In the UK alone, the impact of textiles consumption is high, with carbon and water footprints at 32.9 million tonnes. The rise of fast fashion has led to greater concerns around waste and carbon emissions - and customers are becoming increasingly conscious of where and what they buy.

Charity shops offer a powerful and practical response to these challenges. By giving pre-loved items a second home, they prolong the lifespan of goods that might otherwise end up in landfill, conserving valuable resources and encouraging responsible retail practices.

Prolonging the lifespan of items

Charity shops play a key role in giving clothes, household items and other goods a longer life. From furniture to books, items that may otherwise be discarded are organised and resold so that they can continue to serve the community.

A Salvation Army report highlights that 77,000 tonnes of clothing and 25,000 tonnes of other items were donated to this charity alone in 2024-25. With around 22 million adults buying from a UK charity shop, this could make a real difference to sustainable practices and the future of shopping.

Charity shops show that making sustainable choices is not overly expensive or complicated. With an average transaction rate of £7.04, this affordable and accessible option

is especially welcome during cost-of-living pressures.

The variety of goods on sale, from everyday essentials to vintage and quality items, provide unique opportunities that mainstream retail struggles to replicate. By combining value for money with character, charity shops offer a unique shopping experience and model social and environmental responsibility.

Tackling landfill waste

Beyond extending the lifespan of goods, charity shops also play a direct role in reducing excess waste. When unwanted items are discarded, they often end up in landfill sites and take years or even decades to break down. This can also release dyes and chemicals into the environment that have long-term impacts.

Charity shop donations can intervene in this process, disrupting the cycle of landfill waste - or at the very least slowing it down. They actively drive recycling processes, helping people to treat belongings with more respect instead of regarding them as disposable.

Landfill waste is a pressing climate issue that requires active solutions. Charity retail contributes to the promotion of more sustainable waste solutions, providing a community-led response to climate change.

Reducing carbon emissions

Choosing to shop at a local charity shop can reshape the customer journey by reducing carbon emissions and changing supply chains. While online retail and fast

fashion relies on warehouse production and distribution, with individual home deliveries and long journey times, charity retail begins in the community.

It’s thought that around 339,000 tonnes of textiles are saved from landfill or incineration as a result of charity retail in the UK - and by reducing journeys from delivery depots to homes through a high street or local shop, charity shopping limits issues like repeated delivery attempts and excess packaging. This can have a serious environmental impact, with online clothing returns in the UK roughly generating 750,000 tonnes of CO2 through transportation and processing, according to the British Fashion Council.

Charity shopping within towns and neighbourhoods directly targets carbon emissions, fostering a local commitment to social and climate causes. It encourages a more compassionate approach to our belongings and brings volunteers, donors and buyers together in the community.

Not only this, but it also generates important funding for meaningful, sometimes lifechanging, causes. At Beaumond House, our charity shops in Newark, Balderton, Collingham and Southwell play a key role in funding the specialist hospice care we provide to local patients and families.

Donated clothing is resold within our network of charity shops in North Nottinghamshire, so no items are transported long distances, and many of the clothes we sell are new or nearly new.

Spring has arrived in Derbyshire, and the National Tramway Museum has welcomed visitors back for what is already shaping up to be a fantastic 2026 season. Since the name change from Crich Tramway Village, the museum continues to build on its reputation as one of the region’s most unique and engaging heritage attractions — and this spring’s opening has shown just how much there is to look forward to.

The season began in mid-March, with momentum building into the Easter Bank Holiday weekend for the first major event of the year, Easter Eggstra. More than 3,000 visitors stepped aboard across the weekend, with families enjoying the popular Easter trail, meeting the Easter Bunny and soaking up the atmosphere across the site. Despite a brief attempt by “Storm Dave” to disrupt proceedings, the largely dry weather helped create a vibrant and memorable start to the season, with positive feedback from visitors of all ages.

Set high above the Derwent Valley, the National Tramway Museum offers far more than just a day out — it’s a chance to step back in time. Visitors can enjoy unlimited rides on beautifully restored vintage trams, travelling through a recreated period street and out into open countryside. The combination of heritage, scenery and hands-on experiences makes it a standout destination for families, enthusiasts and casual visitors alike.

Beyond the trams, there’s plenty to explore. From woodland walks and sculpture trails

to indoor exhibitions and play areas, the site offers something whatever the weather. Food and drink options continue to enhance the experience, from a relaxed stop at the Tram Stop Café to a traditional sweet treat, or even a Matlock Meadows ice cream from the vintage ice cream van on a warm spring day.

Looking ahead, the events calendar is packed with reasons to return. Model tram enthusiasts can enjoy dedicated weekends in April and May, showcasing intricate layouts and detailed displays celebrating the craftsmanship and history of tramways.

For families, Magical May on 3rd and 4th May brings a touch of springtime enchantment, with a Fairy Trail, wandmaking, Wizarding School and live entertainment creating a memorable and magical day out for all ages.

With a successful opening behind it and a packed programme ahead, there’s never been a better time to visit this spring and experience everything the museum has to offer.

Mansfield Museum and Art Gallery is proud to present Open Art 2026, a vibrant and inclusive exhibition showcasing the work of 27 local and regional artists. The exhibition is now currently open and runs until Saturday 27 June at the Leeming Street site, the exhibition highlights the breadth, diversity, and talent of the area’s creative community.

The exhibition follows an open call issued last year, which attracted more than 50 submissions from artists across the region. A dedicated community panel, made up of local residents, carefully reviewed each entry and selected the final works on display. This unique approach places the community at the heart of the curatorial process, ensuring the exhibition reflects a wide range of voices and perspectives.

mixed media work draws inspiration from the natural world, combining textures and materials to reflect growth, change, and the beauty of local landscapes. Also highlighted is Caitlin Bower, a self-taught photographer presenting her work publicly

imagination, but also the powerful role creativity plays in fostering connection, reflection, and pride in place.

The exhibition will be officially launched at a preview evening on Thursday 2 April, with the Mayor and other invited guests in attendance.

Open Art 2026 features an impressive variety of artistic practices, including painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, textiles, and mixed media. The exhibition brings together both established professionals and emerging artists, as well as hobbyists and individuals exhibiting their work publicly for the very first time. Among the featured artists is Abbi Olla, whose

for the first time, whose conceptual imagery explores themes of transformation and the subtle boundary between reality and imagination.

The exhibition explores a wide range of themes, from personal experience and family life to heritage, nature, and contemporary storytelling. Together, the works celebrate not only artistic skill and

Mayor of Mansfield, Andy Abrahams, said: "Open Art is a fantastic example of what can be achieved when creativity and community come together. This exhibition gives local people a platform to share their voices, tell their stories, and celebrate their talents. It’s not just about art on the walls - it’s about pride in our place, supporting one another, and recognising the importance of culture in bringing our community closer together."

This important annual exhibition continues to support artists at all stages of their creative journey, offering a welcoming and accessible platform while strengthening connections between the museum and the community it serves. Visitors are encouraged to explore the exhibition, discover new artists, and engage with the stories and emotions behind each piece. Entry to Mansfield Museum and Art Gallery is free and everyone is welcome; we look forward to seeing you soon.

For over five decades, actor, writer and comedian Lenny Henry has been telling stories — on stage, on screen and through a host of characters etched into our collective memory. His new live tour, Still At Large, is part stand-up, part storytelling and part conversation. Tickets are available from Fane.co.uk/Lenny-Henry.

In his first UK tour since his critically acclaimed Cradle to Rave in 2010, Still At Large will see Lenny return to the experiences that shaped him while also exploring the ideas, challenges, and creative sparks driving him today. The tour kicks off at Shrewsbury’s Theatre Severn on 5 May, then tours across the UK before culminating at London’s Hackney Empire on 3 November.

Lenny Henry said: “I’m so excited to bring Still At Large to the theatres around the UK. It's good to be back on the road with my new tour because I'm this Lenny now – I'm not 16 anymore, it’s like

I’ve shed 15 skins since then! I'm going to come on stage and tell some stories and then the audience can ask questions, too. Come and join me – you never know, you might learn something new.”

From the unforgettable days of The Lenny Henry Show and Chef!, acclaimed dramatic performances in Othello, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and Every Brilliant Thing, to the co-creation of Comic Relief and multiple children’s books including Tyrone’s Cool Crown and The Boy With Wings, Lenny traces the roles, characters, and moments that have defined his remarkable five decade career—and shares what continues to inspire him now as he reflects on a life lived out loud.

Expect big laughs, heart, and a first-hand celebration of the many versions of Lenny: the actor, the impressionist, the comedian, the fundraiser, the author.

Midlands Air Festival 2026

The news that many have been waiting for has just been released and it confirms that the RAF Aerobatic Team, The Red Arrows will be taking centre stage at the acclaimed Midlands Air Festival at the end of May.

2026 will be a historic year for the team, as for the first time in its long history, the RAF’s premier display team will have a female commanding officer. Wing Commander Sasha Nash recently replaced Wing Commander Adam Collins who has just completed a successful three year tour with the team. Wing Commander Nash is now responsible for the 150 strong unit based at RAF Waddington and will coordinate every aspect of the team, including displays, safety, engineering and detailed planning. Their appearance at the Midlands Air Festival will be the very first opportunity to see the team’s new season display at an inland UK air display.

The Red Arrows, who are the largest military aerobatic team in the UK, will join a stellar lineup of display

aircraft from all over the UK and Europe, to include the rare cold war MiG 17F jet fighter from Poland, the Grumman Turbo Firecat from France performing its very first fire bombing demonstration in the UK dropping over 3,000 litres of water in 4 seconds and Team Raven who are largest civilian display team in the UK.

The Battle of Britain Memorial flight will be displaying with a Spitfire and Hurricane and unusually, a Douglas DC 3 Dakota as the Lancaster is in deep maintenance at the moment. There will also be the first display after a long restoration of the world’s only Westland Whirlwind historic search and rescue helicopter in company with a giant Sea King helicopter.

The RAF mass parachute team, the Falcons will also drop on all 3 days. Many more exciting aircraft make up the daily flying display.

Adding to the excitement is a major hot air balloon festival too, with over 150 giant multi coloured balloons including many special shape ‘character’ balloons, most standing over 100ft tall including Smiley Scarecrow; Fly Alien; Busby the Kings Guardsman; Orient Express and Iggy the Friendly Dragon.

The Festival kicks off on the evening of Friday 29th May with the signature ‘Nightfire’ show, with pyrotechnic air displays, balloon ascents, Fireglow and a massive firework finale.

RAGLEY HALL AT ALCESTER 29TH - 31ST MAY

Stainsby Festival is a wellestablished, intimate and very family friendly event in a beautiful rural setting, held in large marquees on a greenfield site in the picturesque hamlet of Stainsby, Derbyshire. It's been an entirely volunteer run, not-for-profit charity starting in 1969 - a year before Glastonbury. Throughout that time it has spread appreciation of the arts, particularly live music in the singer/songwriter tradition. At various times in its extraordinary and long history it’s also featured book launches, street theatre, poetry readings, light painting and philosophy debates.

Th is year’s festival is from the 17th to the 19th of July with its usual heady mix of folk and

world music, theatre, children’s events, craft stalls, music and art workshops, open mike, meet the musician sessions, and a wide range of craft beers from local breweries (none of them more than 25 miles from the site). A new addition this year is Stainsby’s first ever poetry competition. The judge, Roger McGough. will also be performing his own one man show at the festival.

Seize the Day, Sarah McQuaid and the Rogue Embers are already on this year’s line up which continues to evolve right up to the festival itself. Festival President, Tony Trafford, says As volunteers we can afford to stay flexible with our line up, securing amazing names at the last minute.

Smash hit comedy

Desperate Scousewives is set to head out on its first ever nationwide tour next month and stops off at Nottingham Arts Theatre.

Benidorm and I’m a Celebrity star Crissy Rock heads the fabulous all-female cast as Lily in the hilarious show which will play 22 dates at 18 venues between Wednesday 13 May and Saturday 20 June 2026.

Desperate Scousewives: Lily’s Story is written, directed and stars Lynne Fitzgerald. The talented cast also includes Lynn Francis and Samantha Alton. It ends at the Lyric Theatre in Carmarthen on Saturday, 20 June.

Desperate Scousewives is an acclaimed series of four plays, each told from the perspective of one of its quartet of vibrant characters.

In Desperate Scousewives: Lily’s Story, get ready for a riotous, fast-paced comedy following the lives of three, no-nonsense Liverpool women and one nervous newcomer, all navigating life, love, loyalty and lipstick on a tightly knit street.

Susan, Vanessa and Lily dominate the street with their big personalities, big voices and even bigger secrets. But everything is turned upside down with the arrival of Trisha, a single mum from Manchester, thrown into the lion’s den of long-established friendships and fierce loyalty.

Crissy Rock is Lily. Best known as one of the stars of ITV’s hit series Benidorm, and a multi-award winner, Crissy Rock is hailed by fans as one of the most outstanding and outrageous stand-up comedians of her generation. From her hilarious routines directed at useless partners (well, men in general) to her journey through the onset of middle age, Crissy’s non-stop blasts of comedy brilliance hit the right note every time. Lynne Fitzgerald plays Susan. Lynne is

a celebrated Liverpool actress, writer and director best-known for creating the hit comedy quartet Desperate Scousewives. She has written more than 10 stage plays and has performed in many hugely successful touring productions across the UK including Twopence to Cross the Mersey and By the Waters of Liverpool.

A former stand-up comedian, Lynne is admired for her impeccable timing and expressive comedy style. Her work captures the heart, humour and spirit of Merseyside life. A true powerhouse of northern theatre, she continues to entertain audiences with her wit, warmth and authenticity.

Lynn Francis is Tricia. Lynn has worked extensively in theatre, mostly at Liverpool’s Royal Court playing various roles including Brenda in Ladies Day, Mo in The Royal, Mandy in Mam! I’m Ere! Annie Fields in Reds and Blues, Carol in Yellow Breck Road, Molly in Haunted Scouse, Nan in The Netherley Hillbillies and Nan in Anfield Apocalypse to name just a few.

She has toured playing Mother in Helen Forrester’s By the Waters of Liverpool. Other plays include Waiting for Gateau, plus many pantos over the years. Lynn has also played various roles in previous productions of Desperate Scousewives.

And Samantha Alton appears as Vanessa. Samantha is a Liverpudlian actress who has been acting professionally for over a decade. Although the majority of her credits come from the stage, she has also filmed for TV commercials, corporate, short films and pilots, recorded voiceover work audio plays and animation, and more recently started stand-up comedy.

She previously played ‘Nessa’ in Desperate Scousewives in 2024. Other notable recent stage credits include the title role in Irish Annie’s on its 2025 UK tour, Louise in Under the Mersey Moon, Helena in Hammer & Helena, Ruby in Buckled, Fiona in By the Waters

of Liverpool (UK tour, 2023) and Kitty (Catherine Wilkinson) in Kitty, Queen of the Washhouse.

Lynne Fitzgerald said: “I’m thrilled to be taking Desperate Scousewives on tour. The plays form a quartet, with each of the characters having their own story, so each show stands alone, yet together they create the full, hilarious world I envisioned.

“When I first wrote the character Lily, I was already a huge fan of Crissy Rock and had been lucky enough to work with her on stage many times over the years. I always wrote Lily with Crissy in mind, so to now have her performing Lily on tour is the pinnacle of my writing career.

“I’m also thrilled to be joined by Lynn Francis and Sam Alton who have both performed in Desperate Scousewives over the past 14 years in different roles. I’m so happy to have my perfect cast, all with strong comedy backgrounds, bringing these characters to life.”

Producer Bill Elms added: “Desperate Scousewives has been a huge hit whenever it has been staged in Liverpool City Region, so I’m very excited to now be able to share Lynne’s fantastic comedy creation with audiences right across the country on this inaugural UK tour.

“I’m also absolutely delighted to welcome the brilliant Crissy Rock who is joining the hugely talented cast of actresses bringing Lily, Susan, Nessa and Tricia to life on stage. I know theatregoers up and down Britain are going to love these ‘liver birds’ just as much as we do.”

A Truly Stunning Golf Course

Sherwood Forest GC is a true Heathland Golf course on the edge of the famous forest.

Harry Colt designed the original course layout after the club moved from its original location in Ravensdale. It was subsequently re modelled in the 1920’s by James Braid and only minor modifications have been made in the last 100 years.

The course, including the SSSI (Site of Scientific Special Interest) which covers the area from the 7th to 15th hole, is laid over free draining sand and gives a course that is playable throughout the year.

SFGC has hosted many prestigious championships over the years, from R&A Open Championship qualifying to prestigious events such as the English Men’s Strokeplay (Brabazon

Trophy) in 2020 and the PGA Professionals Championship in 2023.

The club takes great pride in its place within the Golfing community and reranking’s for the top 100 courses are keenly scrutinised by committee, staff and members alike to ensure that the club stays true to its mission statement to be one of the best Heathland courses in the midlands, if not the country.

The club has seen the addition of improved practice facilities in 2020, a new undercover driving range and short game area completed for members use only.

LET YOUR CREATIVITY AND IMAGINATION FLOW

THERE ARE EVENTS YOU ATTEND AND THEN THERE ARE EVENTS YOU EXPERIENCE. MAKERS CENTRAL FIRMLY BELONGS IN THE SECOND CATEGORY.

Bringing together thousands of creators, hobbyists, professionals and the simply curious, Makers Central has become one of the UK’s most exciting celebrations of hands-on creativity. It’s not just a show you walk around; it’s one you step into. The air hums with the sound of machinery, the sparks of live metalwork, the whirr of lathes, and the buzz of conversation between people who love to build, shape and create.

What makes Makers Central stand out is its energy. Across the show floor you’ll find live demonstrations running all weekend — woodworking, leathercraft, robotics, prop-making and more. Makers don’t just display finished pieces; they share process, technique and hard-earned knowledge. You can watch a project take shape in real time, ask questions, and learn directly from experienced creators.

But the real magic lies in the hands-on opportunities. Visitors aren’t confined to the sidelines. Workshops and interactive stands invite you to roll up your sleeves and make something yourself, whether that’s crafting a small leather good, shaping wood, or even driving a robot in a combat arena. It’s about participation, not observation.

The event also bridges traditional craft and modern technology. Alongside timehonoured skills like blacksmithing and hand-tool woodworking, you’ll find cuttingedge CNC machinery, laser engraving, 3D

printing and innovative software solutions. It’s a place where analogue and digital creativity sit comfortably side by side.

Then there’s the community. Makers Central thrives on connection. You’ll meet YouTube creators whose channels you follow, industry experts you’ve admired, and everyday makers who are just as passionate as you are. Conversations spark ideas. Ideas turn into collaborations. Inspiration is everywhere. This year the line up includes Colin Furze and Alec Steele two of the UKs biggest YouTube creators, Bobby Duke from the US and Dave Billings who is bringing his Boeing 737 underground bunker to the show before it goes underground!

For those looking to upgrade their workshop, the show floor is packed with leading tool brands offering live demos and exclusive show deals. It’s a rare chance to test equipment before you buy and speak directly to the people who design and use it. At its heart, Makers Central is about celebrating the simple but powerful act of making. In a world increasingly dominated by screens and mass production, it champions skill, creativity and the satisfaction of building something with your own hands.

Whether you’re a seasoned professional or picking up tools for the first time, Makers Central reminds you of one thing: making isn’t just a hobby — it’s a movement.

The county of Rutland is a true hidden gem. Although it is the smallest county in England, it packs a remarkable punch, think Cotswolds-esque villages, without the streams of traffic.

Often overlooked in favour of larger destinations, Rutland embodies the charm of the English countryside. Its blend of scenic landscapes, historic towns, wildlife and local food culture make it an ideal escape.

Rutland has no cities, but two small market towns: Oakham and Uppingham. Oakham is rich in history, with Oakham Castle as a standout attraction - a remarkably well-preserved Norman hall famed for its unique collection of giant ceremonial horseshoes gifted by visiting royalty and nobility. Uppingham, meanwhile, is known for its elegant streets featuring antiques, independent shops, art galleries and eateries. Both towns retain a traditional market-town atmosphere that has largely disappeared elsewhere, with a strong emphasis on independent businesses, local produce and skilled artisans.

One of Rutland’s greatest attractions is Rutland Water, one of the largest manmade lakes in Europe. The reservoir is a hub for outdoor recreation and nature exploration. Visitors can cycle or walk the 23-mile path that encircles the water

(or 17 if you miss out the peninsular!), taking in expansive views and fresh countryside air. Sailing, kayaking and paddleboarding are also popular, making it equally appealing for active travellers and those seeking a more relaxed day outdoors.

For wildlife enthusiasts, the Rutland Water Nature Reserve is one of Europe’s most important bird migration sites. It is particularly renowned for its osprey conservation programme, which successfully reintroduced the species after it had been regionally extinct since 1847, counting eleven mating pairs last year. In 2026, the project marks 30 years since chicks were translocated from Scotland, and in 2021, the first osprey to be born in England for 150 years hatched here - an extraordinary milestone in British conservation.

Beyond the towns and the water, Rutland’s countryside is dotted with picturesque villages built from warm limestone. Places such as Exton and Whissendine showcase the classic rural character many visitors associate with England.

crowded tourist destinations, this sense of calm is one of Rutland’s greatest strengths. Food and drink further enhance the county’s appeal. Rutland’s agricultural heritage underpins a vibrant local food culture, with many pubs and restaurants serving seasonal produce from nearby farms. From hearty dishes in traditional pubs to independent cafés and farm shops championing local ingredients, the food scene reflects the county’s rural identity.

Quiet lanes, historic churches and cosy country pubs create an atmosphere that encourages slow travel, walking and enjoyment of the landscape. For travellers seeking an escape from

For travellers seeking relaxation, scenic landscapes and an authentic glimpse of rural England, Rutland provides a truly memorable escape.

Compared with larger UK counties, Rutland’s charm lies in its tranquillity, natural beauty and preservation of traditional English life. Rather than busy cities or bustling tourist crowds, it offers quiet lanes, welcoming villages and open countryside where life moves at a gentler pace. Its small size only adds to its appeal - easy to explore, peaceful and refreshingly unspoiled. To

Getting your car looking like new

After a car accident, one of the most common steps in restoring a vehicle to its original condition is getting it resprayed with new paintwork.

The need for respraying typically arises when the car suffers visible damage to its paint, such as scratches, dents, or more severe bodywork damage. While repairs to the vehicle’s frame and structure are necessary, the paint job is crucial for both aesthetic and protective reasons.

The process of respraying a car begins with a thorough assessment of the damage. Any dents or scratches that are present will need to be repaired or filled in before the painting process begins. This is followed by sanding down the existing paint to create a smooth surface for the new coat of paint to adhere to. If the car has any rust, it must be addressed as well, as failing to treat rust can lead to further deterioration over time.

Next, the car is cleaned to remove any dirt, grease, or debris. This ensures that the paint applies evenly and does not get contaminated. After that, a primer is usually applied to provide better adhesion for the paint and to prevent

corrosion. Once the primer has dried, the new paint is sprayed on in layers. Multiple coats are often applied to ensure even coverage and to achieve a high-quality, durable finish. Finally,

a clear coat is applied to protect the paintwork and provide a glossy, smooth finish. This process can take several days, depending on the extent of the damage and the quality of the work being done.

Getting a car resprayed not only restores its appearance but also helps protect the vehicle from the elements, keeping it in good condition and maintaining its value.

hosts the Knife Angel

Newark is set to host the inspirational Knife Angel sculpture, a striking monument created from over 100,000 surrendered blades, as part of the UK National Youth Anti-Violence Tour. It will visit communities across the country, allowing us to come together to reflect, learn and take positive action on an issue that affects families and communities nationwide.

The Knife Angel in on display in front of Newark Town Hall until 20 May 2026, illuminated each evening along with a diverse programme of community events and activities. During its stay, the Knife Angel will serve as a powerful symbol for anti-violence and knife crime awareness, with the District Council and We are Newark organising a host of activities designed to engage residents and visitors in meaningful, inclusive ways that promote kindness and safety.

Designed by artist Alfie Bradley in collaboration with the British Ironwork Centre, the Knife Angel stands as a national memorial, remembering those who have lost their lives and acknowledging the families and communities affected by knife crime across the UK. Its presence in Newark offers an opportunity to stand in solidarity with towns and cities across the country, recognising that preventing violence is a shared national concern.

The sculpture also serves as a message of hope, encouraging remembrance, compassion and collective action, while supporting individuals, families and communities as they work to build safer futures. Newark is proud to be the first town in Nottinghamshire to host the Knife Angel, reinforcing its commitment to community wellbeing, prevention and being part of a wider national movement for positive change.

The events programme includes market stalls attended by local community groups, educational talks and workshops with schools across Newark and Sherwood, first aid training sessions near the sculpture, family photography workshops, the MensWalkTalk mental health walk, a visit to the sculpture by veteran groups, silent reflection led by the Quakers, and local shops will be decorating their windows with messages of peace. Children will be invited to take part in Peace Angel Crafting, with their creations displayed at St Mary Magdalene Church alongside impressive 4ft wooden angels designed by local students. Additional highlights include the annual Stop the Bleed conference taking place at Castle House, a book of reflection that the public can sign at St Mary Magdalene Church and a number of Stop the Bleed kits installed at locations in the town which are designed to help anyone stop lifethreatening bleeding until professional help arrives. An amnesty box will also be situated

alongside the Knife Angel throughout the duration of the visit. The box provides an opportunity for people to safely drop-off any knifes or dangerous weapons they have in their possession. To bring the Knife Angel visit to a close, a closing ceremony is set to be held on Sunday 17 May at St Mary Magdalene Church. The event will be ticketed, and details will be shared on the Knife Angel webpage.

This installation and events programme is brought to Newark by Newark and Sherwood District Council, working in partnership with We are Newark, You Can Do Sport, Newark College and Your CVS. You can find the full events programme and details of how to get involved at: www. newark-sherwooddc.gov.uk/knifeangel

Councillor Paul Taylor, Portfolio Holder for Public Protection and Community Relations at Newark and Sherwood District Council, said: “Hosting the Knife Angel is an honour for Newark and Sherwood, a reflection of our district’s commitment to raising national awareness of knife crime and its devastating impact. A comprehensive programme of workshops, school sessions, events

and training will run throughout the Knife Angel’s stay, helping residents understand how to spot risks, support others and report concerns wherever they visit in the UK. Our goal is to empower people to become advocates where violence is never seen as an option, helping to create a safer future for themselves and their peers”.

Every conversation started by the Knife Angel has the power to change behaviour, challenge assumptions, and save lives!

The weight loss jab phenomenon, are they really the answer?

Traditional “eat less, move more” advice often fails people long-term, so it’s no wonder so many people are turning to medications to achieve weight-loss goals.

However, the rate in which their use has been popularised over the last year has sent alarm bells ringing throughout the medical community, in this article Heart Research UK’s registered Nutritional Therapist, Amie Leckie explores the other alternatives that a person could explore before embarking on the jab, while Chief Medical Cardiologist of Heart Research UK, Dr Roy Jogiya also weighs in with some expert advice on those who have already decided to take these weight loss medications.

Weight loss is complex and involves many biological considerations – it isn’t just about willpower. This article isn’t a means to demonise a weight loss solution that has improved the lives of many but delves into how weight-loss medications work and what other ways individuals can achieve weight loss. From improving gut health to prioritising sleep, we will cover a whole-body approach to weight loss to increase the chances that the results will stick.

Dr Roy comments: “Obesity is not simply about appearance; it is one of the strongest drivers of cardiovascular disease we see in clinic. It increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, atrial fibrillation and heart failure.”

Weight-loss injections explained

Weight-loss injections are prescription medications known as GLP-1 receptor agonists, including brands such as Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Ozempic. They were originally developed to treat Type 2 Diabetes due to their effects on blood sugar regulation, but doctors soon observed that many patients also experienced significant weight loss. This led to their use in weight management.

GLP-1 medications are effective because they act on biological systems that regulate body weight, which are often dysregulated in individuals with obesity. They enhance appetite regulation by influencing hormones such as GLP-1, leptin, and ghrelin, which control hunger and fullness. When these signals are impaired, hunger can feel stronger and satisfaction after eating harder to achieve. By boosting GLP-1 signalling, these medications make it easier to feel full sooner and to stop eating. They also support weight loss by improving insulin sensitivity and blood sugar control. Chronically high insulin levels can promote fat storage and increase hunger, while large blood sugar fluctuations can cause cravings. By stabilising these responses, GLP-1 medications reduce the drive to eat.

Like all medications, these treatments can have side effects and are designed to be used alongside healthy eating and regular physical activity. Without meaningful changes to nutrition and exercise habits, weight regain after stopping the medication is common.

This is particularly concerning because research suggests that up to 40% of the weight lost on these medications may come from lean mass, including muscle. However, when weight is regained, it tends to return primarily as fat mass. This shift in body composition can leave someone in a poorer metabolic state than when they started. Muscle plays a critical role in long-term health. It supports metabolic function, blood sugar regulation, physical strength, and healthy ageing. Losing muscle without actively working to preserve it can reduce metabolic rate and increase the risk of future weight regain.

Loss of muscle during weight reduction can lower resting metabolic rate and impair long-term cardiometabolic health. Preserving muscle through resistance training and adequate protein intake should be considered essential and not optional - whether weight loss is achieved via medication or lifestyle.

For these reasons, weight-loss medications are most effective and sustainable when paired with balanced nutrition (especially adequate protein intake) and regular exercise, particularly strength training. This combination helps protect muscle mass, improve metabolic health, and support long-term results. For those who prefer not to use

medication, approaches such as supporting gut health, stabilising blood sugar, managing stress, prioritising sleep and daily movement can influence many of the same systems – often more gradually, but still effectively, especially when combined.

The gut-weight connection

The ‘gut’ refers to the whole of the gastrointestinal tract, including the stomach, intestines and colon. It contains trillions of microbes, which is often referred to as the ‘gut microbiome’ and is responsible for digesting food, absorbing nutrients and eliminating waste. Gut microbes can influence appetite signalling, cravings, blood sugar response and fat storage, meaning they can play a key role in weight management. Furthermore, research has found differences between the gut bacteria of people struggling with obesity vs. those who are metabolically healthy.

Many things can negatively impact our gut microbiome, such as eating diets high in ultra-processed foods and low in fibre, chronic stress, poor sleep and even some medications. The good news is you can take practical steps today to improve the health of your gut and support your weight-loss journey.

Eat for your microbes: our healthy gut bacteria thrive on fibre-rich diets with lots of diversity, so don’t just stick to the same five veggies on repeat. Expand your intake and try to incorporate an abundance of different plants into your diet such as beans, lentils, oats, root vegetables, leafy green vegetables, nuts,

seeds and fruits. Aim to pack in about 30g of fibre per day – you can try our High Fibre Meal Plan to get you started. Avoid ultra-processed food: ingredients commonly found in highly processed foods can negatively affect our gut microbes and therefore impact hunger signals. Cook from scratch as much as possible and start swapping out any processed foods you regularly reach for, for homemade versions where possible.

Prioritise hydration: drinking enough water is essential for fibre to support a healthy gut microbiome. Fibre needs fluid to ferment properly in the gut, helping beneficial bacteria thrive, soften stools, and promote regular bowel movements.

Balancing blood sugar

When it comes to weight management, blood sugar stability is often overlooked, yet it is a key part of the puzzle to achieving successful weight loss. The term blood sugar stability means minimising the large rise and fall in our blood sugar levels. It’s biologically normal for it to fluctuate, but big swings can trigger a cascade of hormonal responses that make weight loss more difficult – such as cravings, energy crashes and a strong desire to eat.

Blood sugar stability is closely linked to gut health. A diverse, fibre-rich diet slows digestion and feeds beneficial gut microbes, which helps moderate how quickly glucose enters the bloodstream. Supporting stable blood sugar doesn’t require extreme restriction. Simple strategies can make a meaningful difference.

Prioritise protein with meals: protein slows down digestion and therefore the release of glucose into the bloodstream – supporting balanced blood sugar. Make sure to include a healthy source with every meal AND snack if weight loss is your primary goal. Examples include chicken, turkey, fish, eggs, cottage cheese, quark, beans, lentils, nuts and seeds.

Amie says:

For an adult with a healthy weight, the recommended daily amount of protein is 0.75g per kg of body weight per day. Which is 45g of protein for someone weighing 60kg. However, eating more near 1.5g per kg of body weight per day can be much more supportive of weight loss as protein keeps us feeling fuller for longer, helping reduce overall calorie consumption.

Frequent fibre intake: as well as protein, eating fibre with meals supports blood sugar balance, so include fibre with every meal, working towards consuming 30g a day. Research shows eating the fibre before your main meal can magnify this effect, so why not try introduce a veggie starter to your evening meal?

Movement after meals: research also shows that movement after eating, can reduce the large fluctuations we see in blood sugar. Taking a gentle 20-minute walk after your meals can therefore support blood sugar and therefore weight-loss.

Stress, sleep and the gut-brain axis

Chronic stress can disrupt gut bacteria and alter signalling between the gut and brain, influencing hunger, cravings, and metabolism. Elevated cortisol levels (our primary stress hormone) are associated with increased abdominal fat storage, particularly when stress is ongoing.

At the same time, poor sleep disrupts appetite hormones like ghrelin and leptin, increasing hunger and reducing fullness cues. When the nervous system remains in a state of dysregulation, the body is more likely to prioritise energy storage over fat loss. Supporting stress management, nervous system regulation, and consistent, quality sleep is therefore just as important as nutrition and exercise in achieving sustainable weight loss. Take steps today to work on stress and sleep.

Get 7-9 hours sleep every night: if you’re someone who struggles sleeping this is difficult. We have a whole Healthy Tip on this subject, including a downloadable Sleep Improvement Action Plan. Try breath work: our breath is powerful, and it’s the only bodily function we can control both consciously and unconsciously. A simple breathing exercise like box breathing can shift the body from a state of stress into a state of rest and relaxation.

Slow down: easier said than done when life is busy, but slowing down is one of the best ways to signal to our bodies that everything is ok. Rather than rushing to get everything ticked off your list, ask

yourself if you can take it easier a few days a week.

Calories, BMR and exercise

Calories still matter when it comes to weight loss, even when other factors like hormones and stress are addressed. Understanding your basal metabolic rate (BMR) and overall daily calorie needs can help create an appropriate, sustainable calorie deficit without undereating. There are lots of apps available to help you work out your BMR and therefore your daily calorie needs to achieve weight loss, it can be really helpful to use an app like this to help you on your journey. Alternatively, find a BMR calculator online and manually track your calorie intake.

Rather than drastically cutting intake, pairing a balanced calorie approach with consistent daily movement is far more effective. Regular activity supports energy balance, and strength training in particular is key for preserving muscle mass, maintaining metabolic rate, and improving body composition during weight loss.

Bringing it all together

Weight loss medications can be transformative for some, but they are never the only path, they should be considered as part of a broader, personalised approach to managing obesity. Real, lasting change comes from building healthy habits that support your body and lifestyle. By following the principles outlined above, you can achieve sustainable weight loss that lasts. Remember, it takes about 90 days to solidify new habits – so start tracking your progress today. Download our 90-Day Meals & Movement Journal to log your food, hydration, exercise, and even your mood, and take the first step toward a healthier, more empowered you.

Eatingdisorders

What is an eating disorder?

An eating disorder is a mental health condition where you use the control of food to cope with feelings and other situations (NHS England).

Lots of people worry about the way they look and have tried going on a diet at some point. This does not mean they have an eating disorder.

Eating disorders are serious and everyone who has one deserves care and support. They can take over a person’s life and the lives of their family and the people close to them.

There are different types of eating disorders:

• Anorexia Nervosa – a person with anorexia nervosa has a distorted body image and an exaggerated fear of becoming overweight/fat, so they deliberately try to lose weight by limiting what they eat, over-exercising and counting calories.

• Bulimia Nervosa -Eating a lot of food in a very short amount of time (binging) and then taking drastic action to get rid of the food from the body to avoid gaining weight, for example making yourself sick.

• Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) – Avoiding or restricting food intake due to sensory sensitivities, lack of interest in eating or fear of negative consequences (e.g. choking). It is not driven by body image concerns.

• Other types: Binge Eating Disorder, Eating Disorders Not Otherwise Specified (EDNOS).

Changes to look out for

You may notice certain changes if an individual is experiencing difficulties around their eating. These may include things like:

• Increased focus on body weight and shape. This could include increased conversations around weight and shape or avoidance of this topic.

• Avoiding eating with other people. The individual may take more responsibility than they previously did around food preparation.

• Rigidity with rules and routines around eating

• Changes to appearance, for example, choosing to wear baggy clothing.

• Increased levels of exercise.

Everyone is different and so eating disorders can differ from person to person, too. The good news is that recovery is

possible and the sooner someone gets treatment, the more likely it is they will be able to manage their eating better.

Take a look at this segment from ITV’s Loose Women, where Freddie Flintoff and Gok Wan talk about their experiences with bulimia and anorexia:

These are things that can really make a difference:

• Let them know they can talk to you and you want to listen.

• Don’t comment on how their body looks. We might say something meaning to be kind but for someone with an eating disorder a comment about their body can easily lead to difficult thoughts and feelings.

• Make meal times as relaxed as possible.

• Be aware that many people will deny they have a problem with their eating

and body image. Your friend or family member may not realise they have a problem yet or find it difficult to accept that they need help.

• Support them to get professional help. Their GP will be able to refer them to a mental health professional specialising in this area.

• There are many different types of treatment, depending on the nature of the eating disorder and the symptoms. Treatment can involve dietary control as well as individual talking therapies aimed at resolving underlying emotional difficulties.

• Make sure you have ways of looking after yourself. Supporting someone with an eating disorder can be difficult.

Turning Skills into Income

For many women, financial independence can feel out of reach. Barriers such as caring responsibilities, gaps in employment, limited access to training, or lack of confidence often stand in the way. Yet, across communities in the UK, a quiet but powerful transformation is taking place, women are turning artisan craft skills into sustainable income.

At Skilled Hands, we have witnessed how practical, hands-on learning can open doors to economic empowerment, confidence, and long-term stability.

Why Artisan Skills Matter in Today’s Economy

In an increasingly digital world, handmade and artisan products are more valuable than ever.

Consumers are seeking:

• Ethical and sustainable products

• Unique, handmade items

• Locally produced goods with a story

Craft skills such as sewing, jewellery making, soap making, bag making, and millinery align perfectly with this demand. These skills are not only creative, they are commercially viable. For women looking to start small, home-based businesses, artisan crafts provide a realistic and accessible entry point.

Turning Skills into Income

Learning a craft skill is only the first step. The real transformation happens when women begin to see their skills as valuable and marketable.

Through Skilled Hands’ workshops, women have gone on to:

• Start small handmade businesses

• Sell products at local markets and online platforms

• Take custom orders

• Gain confidence to price and present their work professionally

Together, we can turn creativity into opportunity and skills into sustainability.

These outcomes are particularly significant for women who previously lacked confidence in their abilities or had never considered self-employment as an option.

The Role of Training and Certification

Quality training matters. Structured workshops, clear progression, and recognised certification help women take their skills seriously and help others take them seriously too.

At Skilled Hands, participants benefit from:

• Beginner to advanced skill development

• Practical assessments

• Recognised certifications such as NOCN

• Guidance on product quality and consistency

This combination bridges the gap between learning a skill and using it professionally.

Small Businesses, Big Impact

When women generate income, the impact goes far beyond finances.

Increased income contributes to:

• Improved household stability

• Greater confidence and self-worth

• Reduced financial stress

• Positive role modelling for children and young people

Even modest income streams can make a meaningful difference, especially for women balancing multiple responsibilities.

Community Support Makes the Difference

Starting something new can feel daunting, especially alone. Community-based workshops provide a supportive environment where women can:

• Learn without judgement

• Share ideas and challenges

• Celebrate progress together

• Build networks and friendships

This sense of community often becomes the foundation that sustains women as they grow their skills and confidence.

Sustainability Through Creativity

Artisan skills also support environmental sustainability. Many craft practices encourage:

• Upcycling and reuse of materials

• Small-batch, low-waste production

• Mindful consumption

By teaching women how to create with purpose, Skilled Hands promotes both economic and environmental sustainability.

Looking Ahead

longer optional, they are essential.

As the cost of living continues to rise, practical skills that lead to income are no

Community organisations, funders, and policymakers must continue to invest in skills-based programmes that deliver real outcomes.

At Skilled Hands, our commitment remains clear: to equip women with the skills, confidence, and support they need to build sustainable futures through creativity.

Spring Parking Hazards

Car expert, webuyanycar, highlights five hidden spring parking risks to avoid this season.

With spring underway, temperatures begin to climb, wildlife emerges from hibernation, and trees return to bloom. These seasonal changes signal the arrival of warmer months ahead, but they can also bring added considerations for where you park your car.

Richard Evans, the head of technical services at online car-buying service webuyanycar, warns motorists of the seasonal risks when thinking about where to park their car this spring.

1. Cherry blossom: Beautiful blossoms are a threat to parked cars. When it rains, the petals break down and release mild acids, which can be corrosive. This, combined with sunlight, can cause the petals' pigments to stain your car paintwork if not properly removed and cleaned.

2. Tree sap: Tree sap on your vehicle can break down the protective wax and clear coat above the paintwork, potentially leaving permanent

blemishes. For example, one Reddit user reported ‘stains’ from tree sap. To minimise damage, remove sap quickly using water and a cloth, followed by car shampoo and a polishing pad for any stubborn marks.

3. Bird droppings: As nesting season starts, drivers may notice more bird droppings on their cars, especially when parked under trees. Bird droppings are highly acidic and can quickly stain or damage paintwork, particularly in warm weather. To prevent lasting marks, remove them as soon as possible using car-safe cleaning products or a cloth and water – but be careful not to scrub as debris in the droppings can scratch the car.

4. Sun exposure: Increased sun exposure can take a toll on your car. Prolonged UV rays can gradually fade paintwork, dull the finish or dry out rubber trims. Consider parking in shaded or covered areas where possible, and regularly wash and wax your car to maintain a protective layer against sun damage.

5. Pollen: As plants begin to bloom in spring, pollen levels rise and can quickly settle on parked cars. While it may seem harmless, pollen can stick to paintwork and, when mixed

with moisture, create a film that may dull the finish over time. Regularly washing your car and avoiding parking directly under pollinating trees can help prevent build-up.

How much does paint work damage affect resale value?

“Paintwork is a very important factor when buying and selling vehicles; even minor damage to a car’s paintwork can significantly affect its resale value. Scratches, chips or blemishes not only reduce the appeal but can also signal to buyers that the car hasn’t been well maintained.

“As a rough guide, a few scratches on a £4,000 car might reduce its value by roughly 5–10%. (A typical loss would be £300.) If the vehicle has more noticeable cosmetic damage, losses may be closer to 15–25%.

“It's important to note that the proportion of value lost will vary depending on the value of the car. Higher-value vehicles often see a smaller percentage reduction, while lower-value cars can lose a larger share of their value for the same visible damage.”

Education

HOW TO CHOOSE A DAY NURSERY

Choosing a nursery for your child is one of the first major decisions parents make, and it can feel both exciting and daunting. For many families, nursery is not just childcare, it is a child’s first experience of learning, friendships and independence.

The right nursery can play a crucial role in helping a child feel secure outside the home. A warm, nurturing environment helps develop confidence and social skills. For parents, there is enormous reassurance in knowing their child is happy, settled and forming positive relationships with other children, as well as staff.

While early years education is the foundation for later learning, the academic rigidity of a nursery is not often top of the checklist when looking for a nursery, but it’s well worth the consideration. Nurseries follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), which focuses on communication, language development, early numeracy, creativity and social skills. These early experiences help children become school-ready, building curiosity, resilience and a love of learning long before they step into a reception classroom, so finding the right environment for this is important.

Then comes the financial side of it all. Eligible working parents can now access up to 30 funded childcare hours from the term after their child turns nine months old. However, this recent increase in free hours has also increased demand for places, making it more important than ever to plan

ahead and secure a nursery that suits your family’s needs.

One of those needs will be whether you require a nursery that operates term time only or all year round. Some nurseries, particularly those attached to schools, follow school terms and close during holidays. This can work well for parents who are teachers or who can arrange childcare during the holidays, but it can create challenges for families who can’t.

And then there’s the nitty gritty day to day considerations… are nappies and food included? Are dietary needs supported? How much time do the children spend outside? Are they flexible with drop-off and pick-up times?

Choosing a nursery means considering your family’s emotional and practical needs. Look for a setting where your child feels safe, happy and excited to learn, while also considering logistics such as location, hours and cost. The nursery years should mark the beginning of a positive educational journey and a place where your child’s confidence, curiosity and independence can blossom.

At its heart is the dedicated yoga deck, positioned to frame uninterrupted sea views, where guests can begin the day with sunrise sessions shaped by the rhythms of the island. This is complemented by a rotating programme of visiting practitioners, each bringing specialist expertise, from movement and mindfulness to sound healing and holistic therapies, allowing guests to engage with

A CULINARY JOURNEY THROUGH CRETE

Dining at the resort unfolds across four distinct restaurants, each with its own culinary identity and atmosphere: Õnalos for seafood served above the water, Anoee for a contemporary interpretation of Cretan cuisine rooted in local produce, Cuccagna for relaxed Italian dining, and Fayi for allday Mediterranean dishes shaped by seasonal ingredients. Complementing the restaurants, Suncti serves drinks beside the adults-only pool, while Eēxis transitions from aperitivo through to evening cocktails with panoramic sea views, enhanced by a collaboration with globally renowned mixology collective Soulshakers, bringing a refined, ingredient-led approach to the resort’s cocktail programme.

Guests can enjoy relaxed seaside lunches, elegant evening dining and sunset cocktails overlooking the Aegean, in experiences that reflect both the depth of Cretan gastronomy and the understated sophistication of modern Mediterranean living.

JW Marriott Crete celebrates the island’s culinary heritage through a contemporary Mediterranean lens, with a strong emphasis on sustainability and provenance. Across all outlets, menus are grounded in seasonal ingredients sourced from local farmers, fishermen and artisanal producers, with many elements drawn directly from the resort’s own JW Garden. Olive oils from family-run groves, freshly caught seafood and indigenous Cretan ingredients form the foundation of a philosophy that prioritises locality, seasonality and low-impact sourcing. The focus remains firmly on Greek and Cretan cuisine, honouring traditions that have shaped the island for centuries, a legacy further recognised as Crete prepares to become the European Region of Gastronomy 2026, rooted in a food

Nine reasons to take a boating holiday this year Rock the Boat

There are many reasons to hire a boat and cruise our canals, not least that research suggests spending time by water can improve mental health. Tempted by a cruise along our canals and rivers this year, but need a little more persuasion? Here are nine reasons why you should hop aboard and take to the waters.

1. Enjoy a slower paced holiday

With a maximum speed of 4mph along our canals, you're more or less cruising at a walking pace. This will give you plenty of opporunities to indulge in some feelgood hobbies, whether that's naturespotting, reading, photography, or, if the weather permits, sunbathing! Enjoy life in the slow lane and recharge your batteries.

2. Visit new destinations

Did you know that there are over 2,000 miles of canals and rivers to explore? Follow the picturesque Oxford Canal to meander through the countryside.

Take the Llangollen Canal across the border between England and Wales. Or cruise the Worcester & Birmingham Canal into the vibrant city centre. With a range of cruising ring routes varying in duration and length, you can even start and end in the same place, making logistics that little bit easier.

We also offer free short stay and visitor moorings, so there’s plenty of choice of where to stop for the night as you discover new parts of the UK.

3. Discover the UK's hidden gems

Our canals and rivers weave throughout England and Wales, passing towns, cities, and rural villages you may never even have known existed. On your journey, you may come across historic architecture like pillboxes from WW2, which are now often frequented by a variety of bat species.

You could stumble upon hidden pockets of nature that may go unnoticed from the towpath, and catch glimpses of hard-to-spot wildlife, like the endangered

water vole.

You could even find yourself mooring up at a vibrant waterfront location that's bursting with independent shops for unique holiday memorabilia, like Birmingham City Centre. Could you catch a glimpse of the endangered water vole on your travels?

4. Get active in a different way

Relaxing canal boat trips still offer opportunities for gentle exercise in the fresh air. Whether you’re working the locks, walking local footpaths, cycling the towpaths, or standing at the

tiller, waterway getaways are a good way to get moving and shake off your normal routine.

5. Enjoy quality time together

Cruising a canal boat means working as a team. Everyone can help, regardless of their age or ability - from planning your route and doing the locks, to making sure the skipper has a cup of tea. And, once the day is done, you can all hunker down and enjoy a board game or two in your cosy cabin. Every skipper appreciates crew helping with the locks.

6. Travel greener

Taking a canal boat holiday in the UK produces significantly fewer emissions than flying or driving. Using less water and power than a land-based vacation boosts your green credentials.

7. Journey through history

Parts of our network are over 250 years old, and thousands of historic structures still exist along it today. You could venture over the 'stream in the sky' - the UNESCO World Heritage Pontcysyllte

Aqueduct, or travel through the aweinspiring three-mile-long Standedge Tunnel beneath the Pennines. We also have plenty of museums and attractions to learn more about the industrial heritage of our waterways, like a trip to the National Waterways Museum at Gloucester Docks or the Anderton Boat Lift in Cheshire. Pontcysyllte Aqueduct is an exciting adventure in itself.

8. Enjoy your hobbies in different surroundings

If you're a keen photographer, you can exercise your ability to spot and snap waterway wildlife. If you're into podcasts and audiobooks, you may be able to listen to one that fits in with your surroundings. You could even immerse yourself in some yoga or meditation to the sights and sounds of nature. And certainly, nothing beats

lovely cup of tea al fresco.

9. Try something new!

If you're anxious about driving a boat, you shouldn't be. Learning how to drive a boat and navigating the waterways is pretty straightforward. Your hire boat company will explain everything you need to know before you set off on your own. Plus, we have plenty of volunteers looking after boaters across our network.

A FLOORING EXPERT IS WARNING AGAINST SOME COMMON MISTAKES WHEN IT COMES TO FITTING YOUR OWN FLOORING AS A GROWING NUMBER OF PEOPLE ARE TAKING HOME RENOVATIONS INTO THEIR OWN HANDS.

Recent TikTok data highlights a massive spike in interest for DIY, with searches for ‘How to do Flooring’ jumping by 1,000% and ‘DIY Tile’ up 384% in the last 30 days alone.

“As the cost of living remains a real concern for UK households, the DIY market is seeing a significant resurgence,” comments Alex Heslop, Trend Expert at Flooring Superstore.

“While a self-installed floor can be a costeffective way to upgrade your home and breathe new life into your living space, there are some common pitfalls to be wary of to make sure you don’t create additional problems that incur you extra repair and replacement costs in the long run.”

NEGLECTING THE SUBFLOOR

“The importance of having a smooth, stable and level subfloor to create a professional looking finish cannot be underestimated. Remove any existing flooring and ensure the flooring underneath is clean dry and level. Repair cracks and imperfections and remove nails and staples. For very uneven surfaces you may need

to look at using a levelling compound or additional insulation to ensure your finished product has the wow factor.”

NOT ACCLIMATISING YOUR FLOORING

“Timber and laminate boards are reactive to humidity and can expand and contract. Rushing to install your new floor as soon as its delivered can lead to buckling, so make sure your flooring settles into the new environment, leaving it in the room it will be laid in for at least 48 hours prior to fitting.”

CHOOSING THE WRONG FLOORING IN THE FIRST PLACE

“Choosing the right flooring to fit yourself has two important considerations – both selecting the materials which are most suited to your home and lifestyle and also in the materials which you are confident you can fit yourself. While laminate, vinyl, and carpet are relatively straightforward for a competent DIYer to install, and some LVT ranges such as Flooring Superstore’s EvoCore range features an easy click fit mechanism for easy installation, specialists should be called in for complex materials like solid wood. For busy homes with children or pets, prioritising hardwearing and slip-resistant materials is key to

THE 5 COMMON FLOOR FITTING MISTAKES TO AVOID

ensure the floor can withstand the wear and tear of family life.”

SKIMPING ON UNDERLAY

“The wrong underlay leads to poor thermal retention and excessive noise. Ensure you factor in a high-quality underlay to extend the lifespan of your flooring, and provide much needed insulation which can reduce your energy bills considerably. It also improves the feel under foot of your new floor and acts as a moisture barrier to prevent mould, so is an important step in your flooring project. Be sure to tailor your underlay to your flooring materials. Some floors, such as solid hardwood and glue LVT don’t actually require underlay, while more complex designs such as herringbone (particularly engineered or rigid core click-vinyl types) need high compressive strength underlay to protect the locking mechanism and ensure stability.”

GROUTING TOO EARLY

“When it comes to fitting tiles, it is tempting to finish the job quickly, but grouting before the adhesive is fully cured (usually 24 hours) traps moisture behind the tiles. This can lead to the adhesive failing or the grout discolouring as the moisture tries to escape.”

Making More Room

Converting your loft is a practical and rewarding way to create more space in your house. Whether you need an extra bedroom, a home office, a playroom, or simply more storage, a loft conversion can meet your needs while adding value to your property. Here are some steps and considerations to help you make the most of your loft conversion.

Assess Feasibility

Before you start, assess the feasibility of a loft conversion. Check the height, pitch, and structure of your roof. Ideally, you need a minimum head height of 2.2 meters to ensure the space is usable. Consult with a structural engineer to evaluate whether your roof structure can support the conversion.

Plan Your Space

Decide how you want to use the space. This will determine the design and layout. For a bedroom, you'll need space for a bed and storage. For an office, consider desk space and shelving. Sketch out a rough floor plan to visualize the space.

Structural Considerations

Reinforce the floor if necessary. Loft floors may need strengthening to support additional weight. Install appropriate insulation to make the space comfortable year-round. Proper insulation also helps in soundproofing and energy efficiency.

Lighting and Ventilation

Maximize natural light by installing skylights or dormer windows. These also provide ventilation, which is crucial for maintaining air quality. Plan for artificial lighting with a mix of ambient, task, and accent lights to create a welcoming atmosphere.

Access

Ensure safe and practical access to your loft. A staircase is the best option, but it needs to be carefully designed to fit within the existing structure. Spiral staircases or compact designs can save space.

Utilities

Consider the placement of utilities like heating, electricity, and plumbing. You may need to extend existing systems or install new ones. This is crucial if you're adding a bathroom or kitchenette.

Finishing Touches

Choose finishes and furnishings that complement the rest of your home. Use light colours to make the space feel larger and more open. Built-in storage solutions can maximize space and keep the area clutterfree.

Budget

Set a realistic budget and include a contingency for unexpected expenses. Loft conversions can be cost-effective compared to building extensions, but costs can vary depending on the complexity of the project.

Professional Help

Hiring professionals like architects, builders, and interior designers can ensure your loft conversion is done to a high standard. They can provide valuable advice and manage the project efficiently.

By converting your loft, you can effectively increase the living space in your home, making it more functional and enjoyable. Whether you're accommodating a growing family or creating a personal retreat, a loft conversion is a worthwhile investment.

How to Reduce Stress When Moving House

Whether you’re up-sizing, down-sizing or relocating to a new city, moving house is a major life change that can quickly feel overwhelming. However, with the right preparation and support, it doesn’t have to be a stressful experience.

The key is to begin early. Once you have a clear moving date from your solicitor, start by creating a timeline of events to plan ahead. You can use a checklist of items to guide the packing process and breaking down tasks into manageable stages will gradually prepare you for the move.

In addition, you can make the most of the packing process, as it provides a useful opportunity to declutter and get your things organised. Moving unwanted items to your new house will only add to your workload, so taking time to sort through your belongings can cut the cost and complexity of moving.

Setting aside a box of essentials - such as toiletries, chargers and basic kitchen itemswill also help you settle in comfortably from day one without searching through boxes. While it can be tempting to cut costs during

a move, choosing reliable, professional removals services is a worthwhile investment to keep your belongings safe. Experienced professionals bring efficiency and peace of mind, ensuring belongings are handled properly and everything runs smoothly.

Ultimately, reducing stress during the moving process comes down to effective preparation and trusting the right people to help. With a clear plan and support, you can focus less on the stress of moving and more on settling into your new home.

At Ballards, we have over 45 years of experience in supporting home moves. To find out more about our packing, storage and removals services, get in touch with our team on 01777 871871 or visit www.ballards-move.co.uk

Garden Wildlife Week

Verve Shares simple ways to Help Pollinators Thrive

As Garden Wildlife Week (26th May – 1st June) approaches, Verve is encouraging households to turn their gardens, patios and balconies into pollinator-friendly havens with simple planting choices that make a real difference. Pollinators such as bees and butterflies play a vital role in supporting

a bigger impact, Verve Perfect for Wildlife Mix Wildflower Seeds offer a colourful blend designed specifically to attract bees, butterflies and birds. Perfect for sunny borders, this mix transforms outdoor spaces into lively, wildlife-supporting environments in just one season. By choosing a mix of flower shapes and varieties, from

biodiversity, and even small outdoor spaces can provide essential food and shelter during the busy summer months.

PLANT FOR POLLINATORS

One of the most effective ways to support wildlife is by introducing nectar-rich flowers that provide reliable sources of pollen and nectar throughout the season. The Verve Munstead Lavender Seeds are a fragrant favourite for bees, producing vibrant purple blooms that attract pollinators all summer long. Easy to grow in borders or containers, lavender is ideal for gardeners looking to combine beauty with biodiversity. For those looking to create

clustered blooms to open-petalled flowers, gardeners can support a wider range of species and extend feeding opportunities throughout the season.

THINK BEYOND SUMMER

While summer is peak season, pollinators benefit from gardens that offer interest and structure year-round. Early and late flowering plants help extend food sources, while foliage and stems provide shelter during cooler months. Verve’s range of pots and containers makes it easy to introduce pollinator friendly planting to smaller spaces such as balconies and patios, showing that you don’t need a large garden to make a meaningful impact.

SMALL CHANGES, BIG IMPACT

Alongside planting, access to water is crucial. A shallow water source offers a safe place for insects and birds to drink and cool down during warm weather. The Verve Laleh Terracotta Saucer can be repurposed as a simple wildlife water station. Just add fresh water and place it in a shaded area. You can also add a few large stones or pebbles so insects have somewhere safe to land while they drink. This provides a quick and accessible way to support visiting wildlife in your garden.

Give Your Home Some Kerb Appeal

With homeowners continuing to invest in improving their properties rather than moving, the front door is becoming an increasingly important design feature - acting as both a security point and a style statement.

Property experts say improving a home’s kerb appeal can increase its value by as much as 10%, according to industry estimates from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), and one of the quickest ways to transform the exterior of a home is by upgrading the front door and its hardware.

From statement knockers to colour-matched letter plates, here are some of the front door trends set to define homes in 2026.

COORDINATED DOOR FURNITURE

Rather than mixing different finishes, homeowners are increasingly opting for matching door furniture sets - ensuring the door handle, letter plate, knocker and key surrounds all sit within the same finish for a polished, design-led look.

STATEMENT KNOCKERS

Door knockers are making a comeback as a decorative focal point, helping to add personality and character to the front entrance while creating a more traditional, welcoming feel.

DARK, ARCHITECTURAL FINISHES

Matte black and graphite tones remain hugely popular, particularly on contemporary properties where the contrast against painted doors creates a bold, modern entrance.

WARM METALLICS

Gold and rose gold finishes are increasingly being used to soften exterior spaces and add a touch of luxuryparticularly on navy, forest green or deep red doors.

UPGRADING THE DETAILS

Simple details like letter plates, escutcheons and house numerals are often overlooked, but replacing tired or rusted hardware

can dramatically improve the overall look of a property for very little cost.

British security brand Ultion offers a coordinated range of Sweet Door Furniture, designed to help homeowners upgrade their entrance in minutes.

THE RANGE INCLUDES:

• Door handles

• Letter plates

• Door knockers

• Escutcheons and key surrounds

• Door numerals

Available in seven contemporary finishesanthracite grey, black, chrome, gold, rose gold, satin nickel and white - the pieces are designed to work together so homeowners can create a cohesive front door look.

With prices starting from around £15, it’s one of the simplest ways to improve kerb appeal while also upgrading home security.

Underfoot Luxury

A great room always starts from the ground up. This curated edit of Pottery Barn’s best-loved rugs brings together timeless designs, soft textures and easy, livedin style. From handwoven finishes to subtle, grounding patterns, each piece is designed to anchor a space while adding warmth, depth and effortless style.

The

Lincs

& Notts

Air

Ambulance (LNAA)

has taken delivery of two new Critical Care Cars, thanks to a generous donation.

The charity unveiled the Volvo XC90s recently thanks to funding from the HELP Appeal, the only charity in the country dedicated to supporting air ambulances.

CEO Karen Jobling said: “Our Critical Care Cars had gone beyond their operational life and could no longer meet the demands placed on them as emergency vehicles. We are delighted and grateful to the HELP Appeal as these new cars mean we can continue to deliver the best possible care to patients.”

The cars, which enable crews to respond in more built-up areas or when weather prevents the helicopter from flying, will provide improved reliability, helping to keep the crew online and ready to respond. They have been built with a bespoke layout and more space for the crew’s vital equipment.

The cars provide a round-the-clock emergency response with one of the cars dedicated to Nottingham. This all supports the LNAA’s ability to respond on average, to four missions each day and last year, crews were called to 1,608 emergencies.

The

new cars also support the charity’s planned

expansion, enabling crews to reach more patients.

Each car carries exactly the same clinical equipment as the helicopter, delivering the same level of care for every patient. This includes advanced monitoring, critical care drugs, airway management equipment and specialist intervention equipment used by the clinicians. By mirroring the helicopter’s kit, the cars enable the crew to deliver the same high-level

interventions no matter how they arrive on scene.

The HELP Appeal has been providing grants to air ambulances and hospitals for almost 17 years. Robert Bertram, Chief Executive of the HELP Appeal, said: “We are very pleased to support Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance by funding these Critical Care Cars helping to ensure their life-saving teams reach critically ill patients quickly by road when flying isn’t.”

ChatGPT vs your GP

One in four Brits would trust AI over their doctor

More than half of people are now turning to artificial intelligence for medical advice, and nearly one in four say they would trust AI over their doctor if the two disagreed, according to new research from health testing company Medichecks.

The survey of Medichecks customers highlights a growing dilemma for modern patients: what happens when your GP and AI give you completely different answers?

Overall, 55.7% of respondents said they have already used AI tools such as ChatGPT for medical advice, while an overwhelming 95.7% said they would be willing to do so again. Yet when asked what they would do if AI and their GP gave conflicting advice, 41.7% said they would not know who to believe.

Perhaps most strikingly, 23.8% of people said they would follow AI’s advice over that of their doctor. One respondent put it bluntly: “I would 100% trust AI over doctors.”

The research suggests AI may be rapidly becoming a new first stop for health information, particularly among younger adults. Nearly three-quarters (73.8%) of people aged 25–34 said they had used AI for a medical query, compared with just 34.9% of people aged over 75.

Men were also significantly more likely than women to rely on AI for health advice. In the survey, 63.7% of men said they had used AI for a medical concern, compared with 50.9% of women. Women were also more likely to express concerns about healthcare becoming less personal if AI tools become more widely used.

When looking to the future, more than half of respondents (51.7%) said they believe AI will be better than doctors at making accurate health predictions by 2030. Only 19.1% said they would trust human doctors more.

That growing confidence reflects rapid advances in medical AI. Research suggests today’s generative AI systems can already

achieve diagnostic accuracy levels similar to non-expert doctors, averaging around 52%, while some specialist AI diagnostic tools have reported accuracy rates as high as 85% in complex cases.

However, experts stress that AI remains far from perfect and should not replace professional medical advice.

Dr Natasha Fernando, Medical Director at Medichecks, said: “AI can be a helpful tool for learning more about your health or preparing questions before a medical appointment, but it should never replace proper medical care. A GP doesn’t just look at symptoms in isolation, they consider your full medical history, examine you in person, assess risk and make decisions based on clinical training and accountability.” “Medicine is rarely black and white. Two people can present with very similar symptoms but require completely different care. AI cannot interpret the full context of someone’s health, their lifestyle, their history, or the subtle warning signs a clinician might pick up during a consultation.”

Despite the surge in public use of AI tools, the technology is already quietly embedded in many parts of modern healthcare. Across England, AI is used in stroke units to help analyse brain scans, while radiology departments deploy AI in clinical practice.

In some cases the technology has shown remarkable potential. An AI system called Mia, used to analyse mammograms at NHS Grampian, reviewed scans from more than 10,000 women and detected every case of breast cancer identified by radiologists, as well as 11 additional cases that had not initially been spotted.

However, AI systems can also make serious errors. In one example, Google’s MedGemini model reportedly identified abnormalities in a non-existent body structure called the “basilar ganglia”, highlighting the risk of socalled hallucinations where AI generates incorrect information.

Dr Fernando said this is why medical decisions must always involve a qualified clinician. “AI does not take responsibility for the outcome of your care. Doctors do. That accountability is fundamental

in medicine. If you have worrying symptoms, the safest course of action is always to speak to a healthcare professional who can properly assess you.”

She added: “AI may become an increasingly valuable tool within healthcare, particularly for analysing large datasets or supporting clinicians with decision-making. But the future of medicine will almost certainly involve humans and technology working together, not technology replacing doctors.”

For patients, Dr Fernando advises using AI cautiously and never relying on it as a substitute for professional medical advice.

“AI can help people become more informed about their health, which is positive. But it should be used as a starting point for discussion with a healthcare professional, not the final word.”

Inspirational Rodney

The life-changing impact of a support dog on her autistic daughter has inspired a mum to run this year’s London Marathon.

Laura Charlton’s 13-year-old daughter Betsy was diagnosed with autism, along with global development delay, at a very young age.

With limited communication skills and complex sensory needs for Betsy, simple everyday tasks and outings can result in major challenges for the Charltons. Like many autistic children, Betsy has no sense of danger and often bolts without warning, potentially putting herself at risk.

She is classed as non-verbal and has difficulty communicating her needs or expressing her feelings.

But since being matched with autism assistance dog Rodney by national charity Support Dogs three years ago, Betsy has been able to live a much more inclusive life.

Rodney’s extra-ordinary effect is the reason Laura has chosen to tackle the London Marathon, on April 26, in aid of Support Dogs, which trains and provides specialist assistance dogs to help children and adults with a range of challenging medical conditions.

“Rodney has just changed our lives,” said Laura, a 45-year-old national sales manager for

Skechers footwear who lives in Radcliffe-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire.

“There’s still this unspoken respect between Rodney and Betsy. He’s just phenomenal with her. Nothing fazes him.”

Laura, who is married to Miles, a 49-year-old finance manager, added: “When the opportunity for a place in the Marathon came up, via Support Dogs, I said ‘absolutely’ and it’s great to raise awareness of this fantastic charity. I want to fundraise for Support Dogs – they’ve given so much to us. I want to give that back and also do something that would challenge me. I’m in awe of Support Dogs. I rave about the charity. I talk to people about Rodney’s training and how when he’s in his blue jacket he goes into support dog mode.

“It’s really life-changing – I wouldn’t want to think of life without Rodney, especially now Betsy is a teenager.

“I didn’t appreciate how life-changing he would be. We’re still in touch with his volunteer foster carers – what they’ve done for him in their care has been excellent, the whole feeling of Support Dogs is phenomenal”

“Rodney has opened doors for Betsy to allow her to integrate and experience things and feel comfortable in environments she generally wouldn’t have felt comfortable in. He has really changed how we can do things.

“I’ve done a few events in the local community and people are really accepting and really excited to talk to me about the charity.”

This will be Laura’s first London Marathon, though she has previously taken part in half-marathons. “For me it’s not about smashing a sub-four-hour, for me it’s about completing it, fundraising and raising awareness,” said Laura.

To prepare, Laura, who picked up the running bug around 10 years ago, has been putting in weekly 16-mile runs, as well as running 10k every other day. She has also been attending personal trainer sessions, spreading the Support Dogs word at her gym. She has already raised £900 via a sample sale at Skechers’ head office, and £200 at a Christmas fair at her local village. And Laura has raised £1,800 on her sponsorship page so far, with a target of £2,500.

Creating a Buzz!

A Derbyshire entrepreneur is set to open the Midlands’ first bee therapy

Kristina Samuels, who has spent many years keeping bees on her land in Barrow upon Trent, is launching Beeconscious, a unique wellness experience that invites guests to unwind in a specially designed wooden cabin known as a bee air therapy pod. The concept, which is already creating quite a buzz locally, is simple yet striking. Visitors lie on beds positioned above active beehives, breathing in warm, fragrant air while listening to the steady hum of thousands of bees below. The gentle vibrations and low-frequency sounds are believed to help calm the nervous system, reduce stress, and support better sleep.

Kristina said: “Anxiety is something so many people are struggling with right now. This offers a completely natural way to help people relax and switch off.”

She added: “I have been a beekeeper for many years and have always found being around the hives incredibly calming. Creating a space where others can experience that felt like a natural next step.”

The bee pod also offers Beecura, an innovative way to breath in the beehive air directly through a mask. Research shows that using this system can aid respiratory issues and allergies. Beecura is the first device of its kind to be medically approved to administer beehive air in the UK that is safe for humans and the bees. Beeconscious is the first in the UK to offer this system.

Kristina has built a strong local following through her range of infused honeys and bee pollen products sold across Derbyshire and Leicestershire, including popular herbal honeys, and this latest venture is set to take flight officially on 1 May.

Beekeeping, however, was not her original path. After years in corporate roles, and working in the construction industry, she discovered a very different pace of life among the hives and quickly became captivated.

The bee therapy pod marks the next step in that journey, offering an experience that can be shared. The pod includes two beds, allowing visitors to relax together and let their worries drift away while surrounded by the soothing rhythm of the hive.

Bees enter and exit through separate pathways, ensuring the experience remains completely sting-free and allowing guests to feel fully at ease. Kristina added: “Many people ask if the bees are actually in the pod with you! I am not sure that would be a very relaxing experience, and the answer is a resounding ‘no’. However, there is a chance of one flying past you at some point during the booking!”

The therapy itself draws on apitherapy -

the use of bee-based products and environments for wellbeing. Kristina trained in Europe widely regarded as a global centre for the practice, before bringing the concept to the Midlands. Therapy sessions will begin from 1 May, priced at £60, with bookings already open. There are also plans to collaborate with Loughborough University to explore the potential health benefits in more detail.

Interest in beekeeping and its wellbeing benefits continues to grow, with highprofile advocates including David Beckham and Stacey Solomon helping to bring the practice into the spotlight. Kristina said: “If people leave feeling calmer and more relaxed, that is exactly the kind of buzz I am hoping to create.”

Local Coach Receives Human Impact Award

Joe Roe, a Mental Health Coach from Mansfield, received the Human Impact Award at the recent Paseda360 Coaching Conference & National Coaching Awards.

Joe was attending the annual awards ceremony as a finalist for three National Coach Awards: Specialist Coach, Wellbeing Coach, and Life Coach. Receiving the Highly Commended Specialist Coach Award the previous year, she was pleasantly surprised to win this prestigious new award.

“I truly did not expect to receive such a deeply personal and meaningful recognition by being honoured with the Human Impact Award,” Joe said, “to be gifted this National Coach Award so beautifully reflects my journey. From living with bipolar manic episodes that included psychosis, to now dedicating my life’s purpose to making a lasting, meaningful

difference in the lives of others through the powerful world of coaching.”

Joe has over 20 years of coaching experience and has been running a successful private coaching practice for 10 years as a certified mental health coach and NLP Master Practitioner. Her call to coaching came from her own lived experience of living with anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder. When Joe lost her father and stepparents to cancer, as well as facing redundancy from her leadership role, her past traumas resurfaced

To cope, she turned to alcohol to numb the pain and tried to carry on as if she were Superwoman. But Joe ignored the signs of her deteriorating mental health and lost her mind twice. After being sectioned in a mental health unit for the second time, she went from breakdown to breakthrough. NLP coaching became a lifesaver for her recovery and future mental health wealth.

“I used my pain for purpose,” she said, “by helping and deeply inspiring others through my experiences for the power

of good. I like to create lovely ripple effects of transformation through my coaching.”

In addition to private coaching clients, charitable impact is central to Joe’s mission, and she is passionate about supporting local and national charities. During her career, Joe has created a range of innovative mental health resources, including a Detox Toolbox, Rainbow for self-regulation, and Doughnut Worry Be Happy for goal setting. She designs bespoke, flexible plans tailored to client needs, weaving in personal interests and creating an empowering, co-creative space for a unique coaching experience.

Via her website, Joe provides several free mental health resources, including her Hug in a Mug workbook, MoJoe Toolbox, and a mental health Jukebox created with her life partner, DJ Tim Asher of Vinyl Sounds.

Bears for Life

A Teddy Bear Designed to Ease Children’s Separation Anxiety and Support Emotional Wellbeing

At a time when many children struggle with separation anxiety, bedtime worries and big emotions, a comforting object can provide powerful reassurance.

Blue Bear & Co. has created a beautiful range of sensory teddy bears designed to support children’s emotional wellbeing by helping them feel close to the people they love, even when they’re apart.

Founded by therapist Nici Robinson, Blue Bear & Co. was born from personal loss and a powerful desire to preserve connection. After losing her much loved son Charlie, Nici searched for a teddy bear that could hold the things that mattered most; his voice, a heartbeat and a scent that reminded her of him. When she couldn’t find one, she created it herself.

The result was a heartfelt collection of luxury teddy bears designed to offer comfort, reassurance and emotional connection through sensory features that children instinctively respond to.

The hero product Brown Bear can be personalised with:

• A voice recording from a parent or loved one

• Includes a soothing heartbeat

• A familiar scent such as perfume or essential oils

As a qualified therapist, Nici understands how sensory cues can regulate emotions and help children feel safe. The sound of a familiar voice, the rhythm of a heartbeat and the comfort of scent can all play a meaningful role in supporting children through moments of anxiety or separation.

For children whose parents travel for work, who are navigating family changes or who struggle to sleep alone, these bears can become a reassuring presence at bedtime and during difficult moments.

The bears are designed with practicality in mind. An accessible pouch allows batteries to be replaced, scent to be refreshed and voice recordings to be updated whenever needed, ensuring the bear can grow alongside the child and remain a treasured companion.

Beautifully packaged and accompanied by a heartfelt poem and instructions, each bear is designed to be more than just a toy. They are keepsakes, comforters and lifelong companions. Together, these create a powerful sensory comfort experience, helping children feel calm, secure and connected.

Perfect for:

• Children experiencing separation anxiety

• Parents who travel for work

• Bedtime reassurance

• Emotional comfort

• Keepsake gifts

• Memory bears

Each bear within the collection has its own unique story and meaning, additional colours available blue and pink. Blue Bear & Co. creates what founder Nici lovingly calls “Bears for Life.”

Bereavement can leave people feeling sad, lost, and sometimes confused, but an appropriate funeral and memorial can bring great comfort and peace. At the Willows Natural Burial Ground, the tranquil surroundings of wildflower meadows, woodland, and ponds can provide great solace for those left behind as they remember the person or people they have lost.

The Willows is a 10-acre family-owned natural burial site near South Croxton, with commanding views of the Charnwood countryside, where people can be buried in hand dug graves in eco-friendly coffins or caskets, made of biodegradable materials such as cardboard, willow, wool or banana leaf to name a few. Conversely, their ashes can be buried or subsurface scattered, either in bio-degradable urns or simply poured into or onto the ground.

A range of commemorative memorials are available, made of natural materials such as Welsh slate, and wood, while many people choose to remember their loved ones by planting a tree or native rose bush.

Owners Chris and Jenny Scroby and their family, have been transforming the bare fields with extensive tree and bulb planting since opening in 2011, inviting families of the

buried or pre-purchased plots, to join in at planting weekends. They recently purchased another 3,750 native British bluebell, snowdrop and daffodil bulbs, whilst simultaneously raising money for local charities.

The Willows caters for people of all faiths or no faith. The site can accommodate graveside funerals or act solely as a burial site after a service elsewhere. If families do have a service on site, their fee includes provision of a small pop-up shelter, with limited seating and soft drinks for those attending.

The natural burial option is a cost-effective alternative to a traditional cemetery burial or cremation. Chris and Jenny work with the family’s chosen funeral directors to ensure everything goes smoothly, whilst respecting the parameters set out to protect and promote the site as a natural, wildlife friendly environment.

Chris says: “We’re very pleased with our progress, which we see as our contribution in giving something back to nature and the environment.”
