FA Journey Toward God's Goodness

Perpetual Vows for Sister Gillian Wallace, SNDdeN

The article below is from a recorded interview with Sister Gillian Wallace, SNDdeN at Notre Dame High School in San Jose, California, where she serves as a religious studies teacher.

or Sister Gillian Wallace, SNDdeN the path to professing her perpetual vows with the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur has been anything but conventional. From the halls of Notre Dame High School in Belmont, California, to the classrooms of Cambridge University and now to her ministry as an educator at Notre Dame High School in San Jose, her story is one of curiosity, courage and deep faith.

"I actually first met the Sisters of Notre Dame as a high school student," Sister Gillian recalls. "There was one Sister at the school, the principal, and as any student knows, you try to stay out of the principal's office! So, my vocation didn't begin there."

She says her early sense of call was to the priesthood— something unavailable to women in the Roman Catholic Church. "But Jesus came knocking again," she continues, "this time in my early thirties, while I was living in England."

After earning her Ph.D. in environmental archeology from Cambridge, she began a career in anthropology and university administration. While it provided meaningful work, the experience left her yearning for spiritual depth and community. "I was helping people at work, but then I'd come home and there was no backup, no shared life," she reflects.

Her path led her back to California, where she worked at Notre Dame de Namur University and again encountered the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. "When I met the Sisters of Notre Dame at Notre Dame de Namur University, I thought, Wait a minute—these amazing women have what I've been seeking all along," she said.

The Sisters' commitment to education, social justice and the formation of community resonated deeply with Sister Gillian. Her decision to explore religious life grew from that encounter. "Everything came together—their joy, their intellect, their community and that deep desire to make known God's goodness," she says. "It just fit."

The legacy of Saint Julie Billiart and Françoise Blin de Bourdon, foundresses of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, inspires Sister Gillian deeply. "They were mavericks," she explains. "They broke boundaries to educate poor children, especially girls. Their courage and friendship remind me that goodness knows no class or border. It is on us to make that goodness known today."

Her own vocation as an educator has flourished within that mission.

Sister Gillian now teaches religious studies at Notre Dame High School in San Jose. "I used to think teaching high school would be terrifying—30 teenagers in one room!" she laughs. "But it is actually a joy. These young women are brilliant, engaged and full of heart. And I get to help them explore where faith meets life."

And that joy radiates from Sister Gillian as she looks to humor—with an ever-present smile—to connect with those around her. She says her vows have transformed her teaching and her relationships. "I have always wanted to help people," she says with happiness. "When I say I'm here for you—that is literally what my life means now."

Like many Sisters of Notre Dame, Sister Gillian values the congregation's global perspective. During her preparation for perpetual vows, she spent time in Namur, Belgium, with Sisters from across the world. "We were so different, hailing from Nigeria, Kenya, Congo, the U.S., and yet we were completely one in spirit," she says. "We listened, learned from one another and remembered that our hearts are as wide as the world."

For Sister Gillian, religious life is not a restriction but a widening of possibilities. "I have always been happiest living in community—sharing life, prayer, laughter and purpose," she says. "Professing my final vows is about saying yes, fully and forever, to God's goodness.”

The vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, she explains, are not limitations but sources of freedom. Poverty is about shared resources and care for creation; chastity allows her to love widely; and obedience becomes an exercise in listening to God and the wisdom of her community.

Looking back over her journey of faith, Sister Gillian recognizes God's hand guiding her choices—from her academic pursuits to her ministry. Her journey affirms that faith, humor (and an occasional giggle) and community are essential companions in life.

"Through the years of discerning… I have learned it is about cultivating love, acceptance and peace globally. It is no longer about 'I,' it is about 'we.' Living and working with like-minded people allows you to make a real difference collectively." Sister Gillian shared. •

A Habit of Global Sisterhood

During my two-month stay in Namur, Belgium, I admired the beautiful fabric of the Nigerian Sisters' habits. I mentioned this to Sister Astrid, who is originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo and is currently missioned in Kenya. Weeks later, to my amazement, she handed me a packet of Nigerian habit material that journeyed from Africa to Belgium. Even the pattern, cut to my measurements, traveled across continents before it finally reached my hands.

When I struggled to find someone to sew the habit, I prayed for help. That prayer was answered through a generous couple from Colombia, who lovingly crafted the garment. Their immigrant story echoes my own family's journey, making the gift even more meaningful.

This habit, carried across the world and stitched with care, is more than a garment—it is a symbol of God's goodness and of the global Sisterhood that binds our hearts together.

Flying high

Christina Connell ’16 leans into her Notre Dame experience to navigate a path through the clouds

While many of us commute to a campus, cubicle, or classroom, Christina Connell ’16 has a window office in the clouds. She currently serves as a captain for SkyWest Airlines, which operates under a number of national carriers, including United Express, Delta Connections, American Eagle, and Alaska Airlines. Based out of Chicago’s O’Hare Airport, she specializes in connecting flights to smaller regional airports in the midwest, delivering passengers to larger hub destinations.

Christina first got behind the controls of an airplane at the age of 15 and never looked back — or down — beginning her career in 2023 as a First Officer and receiving a promotion to Captain in 2024. Every day as a pilot presents new challenges and new opportunities, from building camaraderie with flight crew members, to experiencing one-of-a-kind views from the cockpit and interacting with passengers from all walks of life as they travel the country and world.

“It is such a unique and rewarding experience to provide safe and efficient air service for people at, infamously, one of the most complex and busy airports in the world,” Christina said about her day job. “I am still humbled and so excited to put this uniform on everyday.”

Flying is a family affair for the Connells. Both Christina’s mother, Andrea, and her late father, Mark, also flew for United Airlines. Careers in aviation not only provided the Connells with financial stability but the chance for Christina and her sister, Caroline ’18, to travel the world and gain perspective on a diversity of people and cultures. The Connells are also regular presences at ND events, including the annual Crab Fest and Regent Donor Reception.

Andrea credits her daughters’ Notre Dame experience with teaching them “what they needed to be leaders, to become more sure of themselves. We did the best we could at home, but Notre Dame shot them into the stars.”

While the recent passing of her father weighs heavily on her family, Chistina is eager to continue their legacy of giving back to ND, including connecting with current

students and reminding them to be patient and follow their passions, wherever they may lead.

Prior to launching her career, Christina’s passion led her to the prestigious Flight School at Saint Louis University, where she was one of only 5 women in a class of 100 student pilots. Notre Dame’s emphasis on critical thinking and self-image, as well as the support she received from teachers and counselors, helped her navigate and succeed in a male-dominated field.

Recalling her life as a Royal Blue and Lime Green Wolf, Christina remembers the freshman sleepover as a joyous bonding experience where she made lifelong friends, including ND’s current Director of Admissions, Laila Omid ’16, who got to fly with her just last year. She was also moved by a Peace and Social Justice class taught by Ms. Donlin, and her homeroom teacher Ms. Evashenk, who shaped her worldview and Catholic social values and inspired her to pursue new challenges with an independent spirit.

“In times of occasional passenger distress due to delays and missed connections, I use lessons of compassion taught to me and shown to me by the faculty of Notre Dame during such an impressionable time in my life," Christina said.

As she continues on her life journey, Christina is excited to be engaged to her longtime partner, Joey — also a pilot — and looking for a home in the Chicago area. She’s also eager to fly bigger jets for United Airlines beginning in 2027, expanding her destinations to Hawaii, Alaska, Mexico, and more of North America.

She’s also looking forward to returning to San José for ND’s 175th anniversary celebration in October and reconnecting with classmates, family, and friends. •

Leaving a lasting legacy

was a destination for millions of dreamers around the world. The Statue of Liberty beckoned them with words from the 1883 poem “The New Colossus” by Emma Lazarus: “Give me your tired, your poor, Your

Born on October 12, 1897, in Chiusa Sclafani, a village near Palermo on the island of Sicily, Josephine left Italy with her family at the age of six and arrived in New Orleans on May 12, 1904. John was born in Monreale, Palermo, on April 23, 1892, and arrived in New Orleans on April 15, 1905, at the age of thirteen. They met and later married at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Kenner, Louisiana,

Like many Italian immigrants, the Pizzos chose to build a family and raise their children in San José. The Santa Clara Valley shared a similar landscape and climate with

agricultural settings. The exquisite orchards in bloom earned it the nickname “Valley of Hearts Delight.”

John worked in the fruit-packing business. As the oldest in the family, he did not have the opportunity to attend school in Italy. However, he taught himself to read. Josephine was a stay-at-home mom, working in canneries during summer months, as many women did at the time to help their families make ends meet. The San Jose Mercury News and “fireside chats” of President Franklin D. Roosevelt were sacred sources of information in their home.

Faith, family, and education were primary values held by John and Josephine. Their five children — Jake, Mamie, Phil, Mary, and Rosalie — all attended Sacred Heart Grammar School, a few blocks from home. At that time, tuition was one dollar per month. Later, the four girls were enrolled at Notre Dame High School in San Jose, where

Generously donated by John and Cristi Milazzo, and named in memory of their grandparents and in honor of the Sisters of Notre Dame — especially Sister Rosalie — the John and Josephine Pizzo Scholarship seeks to uplift this tradition by offering the opportunity for a student to receive a full, four-year Notre Dame education, learning to become an advocate for justice, mercy, and peace in a world in need of a vibrant witness of God’s loving presence. •

Honoring the spirit of friendship

Michaela Brody & Paul Benke recipients of L'Esprit De Françoise

On a blustery evening in February, Notre Dame’s Board of Directors and administrators welcomed some of our most generous donors and supporters into the warm heart of campus for our annual Regent Donor Reception, where we honored Michaela Brody and Paul Benke as recipients of this year’s L’Esprit de Françoise Award.

Named after Françoise Blin de Bourdon, co-foundress of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, the award pays tribute to individuals who embody the spirit of friendship and dedication forged between St. Julie Billiart and Françoise with their expertise and financial gifts.

Michaela and Paul have displayed consistent, unflinching dedication to Notre Dame as volunteers, donors, alum parents, and members of the 1851 Legacy Society. Michaela has also served on the Notre Dame Board of Directors and the Board Executive Committee.

“Michaela and Paul are beyond deserving of this recognition!” said Head of School Ashley Rae Mathis. “They have shown remarkable commitment and generosity to Notre Dame, sharing their time, expertise, and resources for nearly four decades as volunteers, donors, alum parents, and members of the 1851 Legacy Society. They are warm, joyful givers, championing our mission and funding initiatives that are transforming our community, one student at a time.”

In addition to their gifts of time and treasure, Michaela has also served on the Notre Dame Board of Directors and the Board Executive Committee.

Together with more than 100 guests — including Michaela and Paul’s daughter Stephanie Benke '02 McLoughlin and granddaughter Lillian Grace — reception guests enjoyed delicious food and entertainment from the ND Jazz Combo and Fleurs de Soleil and heard inspiring words from Michaela about what this award means to their family:

“Our journey with Notre Dame has been a parallel of our entrepreneurial business — changing all the time, the pursuit of opportunity beyond existing resources involving innovation, risk taking, and creation of new ventures to solve problems."

The Notre Dame community came together to celebrate two powerful women at the 17th annual Women of Impact. Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Erica Yew and Oregon State Public Health Director and ND Class of 2009 alum

Dr. Sejal Hathi were honored at a sold out luncheon following an inspiring assembly on campus.

Each year, Women of Impact honors one community or civic leader and one Notre Dame alum for their vision, commitment, and leadership, highlighting their important role in our community, particularly in careers and fields where women are historically underrepresented.

During the assembly, students had an opportunity to learn from the journeys of Judge Yew and Dr. Hathi as they seek to become women of impact themselves. Student moderators asked the honorees to reflect on this year’s student leadership theme of “Bloom” and why women’s leadership is fundamental to creating a world of compassion and justice.

“If you want to change the lives of children, then you support women,” shared Judge Yew, who has served on the Santa Clara County Superior Court since 2001, the first woman of Asian descent to hold this position. “In terms of blooming, empower yourself to discuss your internal journey and address self analysis and discovery.”

Judge Yew is also a Past President of the Asian

Pacific Bar Association of Silicon Valley and has served on the California State Bar Board of Trustees. In 2025, she received a Community Heroes Award from the Santa Clara County Behavioral Health Board for her commitment to justice towards individuals navigating the legal system while facing behavioral health challenges.

Dr. Hathi is a nationally recognized public health leader with more than 15 years of experience advancing physical and mental health, women's rights, and public policy in the United States and globally. Prior to her current position, she served as a Senior Policy Advisor for Public Health in the Biden White House.

Reflecting on her experiences as a Notre Dame student, Dr. Hathi said, “To bloom is to be rooted in purpose.”

Later in the day, a fundraising luncheon was held for more than 400 ND community members, alums, and supporters at the Signia by Hilton, a short walk from our campus in Downtown San José. Accepting the Women of Impact award, Judge Yew revealed her extraordinary relationship as Dr. Hathi’s godmother and longtime mentor. This was a revelation not only to our guests but the nominating committee — who had no idea about the connection when the honorees were selected — and served as a poignant reminder of the power of women’s leadership!

“Rights, funding, and access should be circulating topics of discussion. Notre Dame High School exists to reinforce our belief in the good, in educational equity, in just policies and laws, in women’s rights,” Head of School Ashley Rae Mathis boldly stated during her remarks. “We choose to see the good in the world, we delight in the good in our children, and we believe in the inherent, unyielding power of women’s leadership.”

Funds raised from the Women of Impact event support tuition assistance for 25% of Notre Dame students, transforming the future through an education that prepares young women for lives of engagement, leadership, and social entrepreneurship.

As the parent of an ND alum (Mateo ‘23) and current student (Emiliana ‘27), event chair Tamara Alvarado shared, “I cannot think of a better place than Notre Dame for our children to grow, to bloom, and to flourish. I only wish all children could have this opportunity.” •

EGrowing awarenessour of accessibility

Author and advocate Tiffany Yu addresses the intersections of identity

ach year, Notre Dame selects a book to read and examine as a community that deepens our school's culture of Education for Justice and Leadership. The ND Reads program engages our students, faculty, and friends in academic scholarship and intentional dialogue that reflects our Catholic identity.

Over the past 19 years, ND Reads has touched on many topics. We’ve traveled to Africa to study the Rwandan genocide, experienced the oppression of the Taliban through the eyes of Afghan women, explored how government policies have perpetuated racial segregation in America, and celebrated the power of art to overcome intolerance — to name just a few.

Because we are Notre Dame Catholic, we are committed to race, equity, diversity, and inclusion (REDI). With a REDI lens in mind, our community-wide read for the 2025-26 academic year was The AntiAbleist Manifesto: Smashing Stereotypes, Forging Change, and Building a Disability-Inclusive World by Tiffany Yu. Inspired by her popular Anti-Ableism series on TikTok, the book is a revelatory examination of disability aimed at creating a more equitable society for all.

We were incredibly grateful to welcome Tiffany to campus in November to discuss her book and ongoing advocacy work with the ND community. Student moderators Kaylee ’26 and Sophya ’28, along with faculty member Emily King led a thought-provoking Q&A session during a school-wide assembly. Tiffany

detailed her personal experience as an Asian American daughter of immigrants, living with PTSD, sustaining a permanent arm injury at age nine, and how the intersections of identity affect us all.

“One in four adults is living with a disability, and 80% of those disabilities are non-apparent,” said Ms. King, who is also a member of the ND Reads Committee. “It is critical for us to model to our students that advocacy work around disability is not only vital, but it also speaks directly to the Hallmarks of Notre Dame.”

I WAS NERVOUS ON STAGE, BUT I SAW THAT MY CLASSMATES really listened and cared. THAT MADE ME LOVE MY SCHOOL EVEN MORE. EVEN THOUGH WE HAVE DIFFERENT DISABILITIES, TIFFANY’S EXPERIENCES SOUND LIKE MINE.

Sophya was particularly moved by the experience after participating in track and field as a Paralympic athlete and running with the ND cross country team in league finals. "My family and I read Tiffany’s book on the drive to Eugene for the Paralympic Nationals last summer, and I loved it," she shared.

Homecoming

School spirit in the spotlight

Notre Dame’s Homecoming started off strong this year in a gym filled with cheers and excitement, as students across all grade levels gathered in JB Hall to attend the Funding the Future Rally. The purpose of this rally was to kick off “HoCo” Week as well as this year’s Funding the Future, where each class raises money to support tuition assistance for the freshman class that comes in after they graduate.

That weekend, Notre Dame hosted its annual Homecoming Dance! Students listened to great music, played fun games, and enjoyed tasty snacks while showing off their best dresses, suits, and dance moves. The photo booth was a popular attraction, capturing memories from a night full of laughter and dancing.

But the excitement was just beginning! The following week, students came prepared to show their homecoming spirit. There were a number of fun activities that took place leading up to the Homecoming Games on Friday in Pardini Park.

First up were dress up days. On Monday, the theme was “Beach Day” when students could be spotted sporting floaties, sunglasses, Hawaiian shirts, and even bikini tops over sweatshirts. On Tuesday, students came to school

in their best patterned tops for “Pattern Day” and were wearing all sorts of different prints like cheetah, camo, polka dots, and more. The theme for Wednesday was “Music Merch Day,” when students came in their favorite artists' gear such as SZA, Zach Bryan, and more!

On Thursday, not only did students come to school in their favorite athletes jerseys or even their own for “Sports Spirit Day,” Notre Dame’s Class Council also hosted a Funding the Future boba sale during lunch. As the ND community knows, we have a lot of boba sales. But what made this one special was that each grade created their own boba flavor combo.

Finally, Friday was “Class Spirit Day”, featuring the much anticipated homecoming games. The freshmen played the sophomores in dodgeball and the juniors took on the seniors in flag football. There were also performances from our ND cheerleaders and a student raffle with chances to win big prizes. While the games resulted in victories for the freshmen and seniors, all classes put up a great fight and showed their competitive Regent spirit! •

Students play a leading role in ND Theater

Notre Dame's Theater program is a place where students don't just perform; they run the whole show, giving everyone the chance to develop real skills and confidence.

Gigi '26, has served as actor, technical designer, director, producer, marketing committee head, and ITS officer. "I've had the honor to hold many positions. Every day, I follow the legacies of past student leaders who have entrusted their responsibilities to me, and to continue the legacy, I have been training future generations of leaders to continue the work I do now!"

The culture of student leadership welcomes people from year one. "Since I've started at NDSJ, being a part of theatre leadership has been an amazing experience," said a member of the class of 2029. "Working alongside people of all grades, as well as looking up to the leaders of past years, has really made me feel like Notre Dame and the Theater Department is the place for me."

Behind the curtain, students are running the whole operation. Lighting designers program all the cues, sound engineers work on microphones and create different environments, and costume designers are sketching, constructing, and sourcing the outfits. Set builders create entire worlds, props masters find or build every object actors use, and hair and makeup artists transform the looks of all the characters.

The business side is just as student-run. Marketing committees design posters, manage social media, and coordinate ticket sales. Production and stage managers create schedules, manage budgets, and keep every department on track. Technical theater students also provide design and support for music concerts, dance performances, and ASB events through the year.

During the current school year, in addition to the mainstage fall play and spring musical, students produced ND’s first-ever touring children's play, bringing a theater experience to local elementary schools, along with winter and spring showcases.

At the end of the day, the real legacy of ND Theater isn't measured in accomplishments. It's in the culture that gets passed down from senior leaders to eager freshmen who discover they belong. It’s a culture built on the knowledge that students rise to the occasion when you give them real responsibility and trust them to lead. •

Reuniting and reconnecting

More than 9,000 Notre Dame San Jose alums make up a global network of lifelong learners, spiritual seekers, justice advocates, and community leaders with a legacy spanning nearly 175 years. We encourage our graduates to reconnect with each other, carry on traditions, and continue to grow the relationships that define the ND experience and make us the Center for Women’s Leadership – today and tomorrow.

CLASS REUNIONS - We were excited to see a number of classes reunite in the past year!

Class of 1969

Congratulations to the Pink and Purple Panthers for celebrating 56 years of an ND friendship! Alums enjoyed an afternoon “happy hour” on campus, a slide show of memories from over the years, lots of catch up time, and tours led by student ambassadors. They also had a chance to sing the 1969 version of the alma mater before hearing current students belt out the 2025 version.

Class of 2015

The Maroon and Gold Goddesses shared memories and laughs, and reconnected with one another at their 10-year reunion. Some of their former teachers even attended to join in the fun!

Class of 1990

After 35 years, the Brown and Gold Chipmunks still get together at least once a year in various cities as a way to stay connected and keep their ND friendship strong. They recently reconnected at San Pedro Square in Downtown San José for a fun evening of camaraderie.

Class of 2020

The Pink and Blue Griffins celebrated their 5-year reunion with laughs, memories, and updates. This class did not have an in-person graduation due to the COVID shutdown, so bringing classmates together with former teachers was a special occasion.

In addition to class reunions, alum soccer and basketball games are huge annual traditions that bring ND teammates back to the field and the court for friendly competitions with the current varsity teams. A Crab-tastic Shell-ebration!

23rd Annual Crab Fest raises critical funds for co-curriculars

We are extremely grateful to the sold out crowd that came together on Saturday January 31 to make our 23 rd Annual Crab Fest a memorable event filled with an abundance of food, exciting raffle and auction prizes, and high spirits. Thanks to you, we exceeded our fundraising goal to support co-curricular programs including Athletics, Robotics, Speech & Debate, Visual & Performing Arts, Student Leadership, and Peer Ministry!

We were also honored to welcome more than 50 alums back to campus for the event, representing the Classes of 1949 to 2018.

We're not shell-fish when it comes to sharing our appreciation, so please join us in a round of applause for all the attendees, volunteers, students, and sponsors who made waves of joy possible.
