On Sunday, Sept. 7, at 2 a.m. Pacific time, Pope Leo XIV (right) canonized the first saints of his pontificate: Saint Carlo Acustis and Saint Pier Giorgio Frassati. These two new saints provide a role model for young Catholics around the world. Pope Leo XIV says this himself, calling the new saints, “an invitation to all of us, especially young people, not to squander our lives, but to direct them upwards and make them masterpieces.” Both saints died at young ages, but their devotion to God, with their short time on earth, is a lesson on how a holy life can be led. Sunday's event drew a crowd of over 70,000 faithful in St. Peter’s Square, which highlights the saint's impact. Acustis, one of the most anticipated saints, is officially the first Millennial saint to be recognized by the Catholic Church. His incorrupt body, which has been on display in Assisi, can be seen wearing modern clothing, such as Nikes and jeans. Other iconography of the saint features his use of modern amenities, allowing the youth to understand the saint and relate to him

Alongside Acustis was Pier Giorgio Frassati: a 24year old Italian man who died in 1925. Frassati was known for his service, as his years was spent helping the poor and needy, which led to him posthumously being called, “The Man of Eight Beuatitudes.” Frassati also was a frequent mountaineer, and was also knwon for his swimming capabilities. He was publicly anti-facist, which went against the politics of Italy at the time. In 1925, Frassati caught polio while helping the sick, and upon his deathbed, he denied medicine, instead asking that it be given to another person. He is the patron saint of mountaineers, athletes, young Catholics, youth groups, and World Youth Day.
Upon his canonization, Acustis has been named the patron saint of the internet. This attribute comes from Acustis’s usage of the early internet to teach Eucharistic miracles, before his 2006 death. This website has also led to Acustis being dubbed “God’s Influencer.” The 19-year timeline to sainthood is very short compared to others, and it Saints Carlo Acustis and Pier Giorgio Frassati, has sparked criticism from those who personally Pray for Us! knew Acustis. However, he gained popularity long before his veneration, partially because of the internet, which only highlights his patronage
