XIMENA GONZALEZ ‘26 Stage Manager

“Hadestown, a captivating musical by Anaïs Mitchell and developed with director Rachel Chavkin, weaves together the ancient myths of Orpheus and Eurydice, and Hades and Persephone, into a powerful tale that resonates with modern themes. Set against a backdrop of a postapocalyptic steam-punk landscape, this innovative show combines elements of American folk music, jazz, and blues to tell a story of love, loss, and redemption.

The plot follows Orpheus, a hopeful young musician, who embarks on a perilous journey to the underworld to rescue his beloved Eurydice after she is lured there by the promise of security by the enigmatic ruler Hades. In the underworld, Eurydice faces the harsh realities of Hadestown, a factory where souls toil endlessly, forgotten by the world above. Meanwhile, the strained relationship between Hades and his wife Persephone mirrors the cycles of decay and growth, influencing the fates of those below and above

Hadestown is not only a narrative of individual journeys but also a commentary on societal issues such as power, wealth, and the resilience of human spirit in the face of adversity. With its emotive performances, rich lyrical storytelling, and dynamic score, Hadestown offers a profound theatrical experience that invites audiences to question what it means to make sacrifices for love and to dream of a better world.“

DIRECTOR'S NOTE

Hello! Thank you so much for coming to the show and supporting our students, live theatre, and the Notre Dame Theatre Guild. The musical Hadestown is filled with themes of love, loss, and legacy-- all to the beat of a beautiful jazz-folk-inspired score. Set in the period of Greek mythology, while maintaining the culture of a lively New Orleans bar, we visit Hermes at his Jazz bar, as he retells one of his favorite stories of Orpheus and Eurydice. Their tale of love inspires many, including the forces of nature-- and even the gods themselves. As their love unfolds, life hits them, challenging all that they know, and sets them on an adventure to change fate. The show embraces the lengths people are willing to go for those they love and celebrates the humanity within making mistakes. I hope you will not only experience the love—and loss—of these characters, but also see the heart and authenticity these actors have brought to the show. I want to thank all the parents, volunteers, donors, and staff who have supported this show, and to everyone who has welcomed me to the Notre Dame community. I would especially like to thank my sister for getting me this opportunity and my family for supporting me endlessly in all I do.

-Mr. Bravo
