LET TER FROM THE PRESIDENT This past year has seen big changes and exciting developments for the Notre Dame Sisters and the communities we serve, contributing to an air of momentum. We welcomed Sandra Koch as our new Vice President of Advancement. Sandra will build upon the momentum we’ve created over the years. We look forward to Sandra’s building on the momentum of our advancement efforts and anxiously await the blessings that will pour forth. Additionally, we Sisters were invited to participate in a program to build our capacity to attract needed resources to sustain our missions for decades. We continue to support our missions – Notre Dame Housing, Safe Homes, Coalition on Human Trafficking, and individual missions we hold close to our hearts – immigration, education, and advocacy. The Coalition on Human Trafficking is gaining momentum and is now its own nonprofit organization with several Sisters still actively working with the Coalition. In March, we celebrated the Spirit that infuses the Notre Dame Sisters and staff at our annual dinner. Julie Kaminski, CFO of Immanuel was honored for her advocacy of the elderly. The Spirit we celebrate is one of giving and love that flows from the many donors and volunteers who are faithful to us year after year. Our work would not be possible without you, and we celebrate you. May the Lord continue to bless us all as we move forward in love and faith to make a difference. Blessings,

As our congregation changes with our aging population, we look at ways to ensure our legacy remains impactful. F I NA N C IA L S We were blessed to reach $1.48M between July 1, 2018 and June 30, 2019 in income. The income comes from a variety of sources such as salaries of those Sisters who are employed and Social Security and retirement benefits of those that have retired, along with donations and charitable contributions from individuals and organizations we partner with. Our general operating income is down from last year’s $1.72 million. This is attributed to the decrease in the number of Sisters employed. Currently, we have one Sister working full time. Our legacy donations which are donations bestowed to the Sisters from wills and estates of supporters increased significantly from 4% of our income to 11%. This is a true testament to the impact the Sisters have had on so many individuals.

Province Operations Living & Medical Advancement
General expenses were slightly down from last year as we worked hard to adjust to the changing demographic of our Province. Our expenses consisted of two main categories: ministries and medical/living expenses of the Sisters. These categories make up 62% of our expenses. We anticipate our living and medical expenses of the Sisters to increase each year. We are proud that we support our ministries such as the Coalition on Human Trafficking, Safe Homes, Notre Dame Housing, and the Sisters’ Individual Ministries. ANNUAL REPORT 2018-2019

NOT R E DA M E HOU SI NG ( N DH ) Our property in Florene has served many purposes and met many needs since it was purchased over a 100 years ago. It is now a blessing to have senior citizens enjoying fantastic and affordable housing here. NDH is very important to our lasting legacy. Senior housing is a growing need and we are proud to have recognized this in 1997. NDH remains: • the only nonprofit in Omaha offering affordable housing, social, and supportive services, along with a senior center for the larger community • at capacity with 118 residents • active in housing assistance, providing $231,719 in housing assistance last year

C OA L I T ION ON H UM A N T R A F F IC K I NG In 2014, we Notre Dame Sisters recognized human trafficking becoming an epidemic. We teamed up with the Servants of Mary and the Sisters of Mercy to begin the Coalition on Human Trafficking. This fiscal year was a huge accomplishment for us Notre Dame Sisters as the Coalition on Human Trafficking officially became its own 501© 3. This is the ultimate goal for all of our ministries - that they eventually stand on their own.

SAFE HOMES PROGRAM Our Safe Homes Ministry grows each and every year, and we are grateful to fill the unmet need domestic abuse shelters expressed to us: help women secure an apartment so they do not have to come back to the shelter, or worse, return to an abuser. Arrests in the Omaha Metro area for domestic violence are up 49% over the past three years, and half of those arrested had previous assault charges, according to the Women’s Fund of Omaha. Moreover, our partners in six local shelters anticipate a 5-10% increase in women seeking shelter from violence in 2020. Your support can truly make a difference in the life of a woman and her children.
DI R E C T SU P P ORT TO WOM E N In 2018, we sponsored 112 women and 150 children with financial assistance for a deposit on an apartment or first month’s utilities. We also provide encouragement during the first year to become successful renters. A Sister provides regular contact with the recipient to ensure timely rental payments and to help with additional community services. PAGE 8

I N D I V I D UA L M I N I S T R I E S We each have individual passions that lead into many other ministries. From Hospice care to drug and alcohol treatment, to advocating for human rights, we find time to serve God through our individual work. Here are some highlights:
E D U C AT I O N We Sisters have been proud educators for hundreds of years, even before we came to the United States. While many of us are retired, some still teach full or part time. Sister Mary Ann Zimmer is a current faculty member at Marywood University in Pennsylvania where she teaches religious studies.
H E A LT H A N D W E L L N E S S I N G UAT E M A L A Sisters have been traveling to Guatemala for decades working health and community projects. One major focus in Guatemala is to help with clean drinking water. In fact, Sister Mary Kay Meagher frequently travels to Guatemala. Sisters who can no longer travel still support through prayer, or sending items from hygiene supplies to homemade dresses.
A DVO C AC Y We have always been risk takers, in fact, it’s written into our vows. Did you know that we, along with the Servants of Mary and Mercy Sisters, all hold signs as a witness to the mothers and children separated from their families at the border? Every Thursday since June some of us have stood during rush hour to advocate for humane treatment of people crossing our borders.

KOL AC H E S A L E R A I S I N G F U N D S F O R O U R S A F E H O M E S M I N I S T RY Siters made hundreds of dozens of kolaches to sell at the annual Florence Pottery tour. Volunteers and associates chipped in and we raised a total of $600 for local women renting their first apartment after leaving a domestic abuse shelter.
PORK DINNER A T R A D I T I O N A L C Z E C H A F T E R N O O N was celebrated by hundreds of people at St Philip Neri’s Activity Center. Traditional music and dancing, Czech dumplings and pork, raffles and so much more added to the fun. We love providing this piece of our heritage to the community. aving served as the Executive Director of Notre Dame Housing for six years, Julie Kaminski is someone with whom the Sisters are proud to have worked. Since moving on to serve the community through Immanuel, Nebraska’s largest senior living organization, she continues to support the NDS ministries and mission of serving people and meeting unmet needs. “In talking with Julie, her passion and kindness are what stand out,” said Sister Margaret Hickey, Provincial President of the Notre Dame Sisters. “Her love for her family, her career, and the elderly are obvious. She believes that when we collaborate together, we receive a better understanding of others. Collaboration capitalizes on each person’s gifts and together great things are accomplished for those in need.” Julie grew up in Omaha, in St. Thomas More Parish. From an early age her parents instilled in her the importance of treating others with respect and dignity. Their strong faith and focus on helping others provided Julie with a foundation that she and her husband Kevin continue to pass down to their children, Anna, Seth and Liam. As a family they give many hours of service to others, especially the Notre Dame Sisters’ community. Julie earned her Masters of Gerontological Studies degree in 2000 from Miami University of Ohio. From 2005 to 2011, Julie served as Executive Director of Notre Dame Housing. Currently Julie is the Senior Vice President of Operations and Chief Operating Officer of Immanuel, Nebraska’s leader in senior living. “Julie truly has a passion for seniors,” said Eric Gurley, Immanuel CEO. “We are honored to welcome her expertise, knowledge and passion to our leadership team.”

Julie has always had a calling toward serving the aging community. “My passion for the advocacy of the elderly is something that I instill in my children,” Kaminski said. “When I was the Executive Director at Notre Dame Housing, I was provided with constant inspiration. I found the Sisters’ mission and charism to be a daily motivation. I was in awe of how innovative the Notre Dame Sisters were towards the needs of the elderly.” The people Kaminski worked with inspired her and created lifelong friends, including Sr. Marie Alice Ostry who Kaminski refers to as a friend and mentor to this day. “We are honored to have people like Julie Kaminski continue to work with us and remain passionate about our work years after physically working here,” said Sandra Koch, Vice President of Advancement for the Notre Dame Sisters. Omaha and especially Omaha’s seniors are blessed to have an advocate like Julie Kaminski call this community her home.
