Mission Statement & Program Goals The mission of the Northwestern State University Band Program is to: serve the institution positively and respectfully as its musical ambassador on the athletic field and in the concert hall; serve as a laboratory for its members who may become band directors and also as a platform for those aspiring to become leaders in their chosen field.

Our Facilities William E. Brent Band Hall The William E. Brent Band Hall is one of the most frequently utilized spaces in the CAPA facility. Over 300 students visit this room almost daily during the academic year. Band members and organizations are expected to help keep the room clean and dispose of trash properly. This expectation also extends to any area our band utilizes. Lockers are provided for instrument storage, and band members are expected to use the lockers assigned to them. Music stands and chairs must not be removed from the band room at any time, for any reason.

Magale Recital Hall Magale Recital Hall is home to many productions and concerts delivered by the Department of Music and members of the community. The 450-seat recital hall is named in honor of philanthropist Joanna Magale, who provided gifts to support the School of Creative and Performing Arts. The facility has two 9-foot concert grand pianos and a magnificent 40-rank Reuter organ.

The Proving Grounds - SON Rehearsal Field Home to the Spirit of Northwestern, the Proving Grounds is the dedicated rehearsal space for the marching band during the fall semester. The practice field is concrete and lined according to NCAA football regulations, similar to those used in Turpin Stadium. To ensure the safety of all participants, students are asked to keep the practice field and facility clean and free for unnecessary objects.

Turpin Stadium Turpin Stadium is a 15,971-seat multipurpose stadium that was opened in 1975. It is the home of the NSU Demon football team and the primary performance space for the Spirit of Northwestern State Marching Band. The annual Classic on the Cane Marching Contest is held in Turpin Stadium each year in late October/early November.

Prather Coliseum Perhaps one of the toughest arenas to play in the Southland Conference, Prather Coliseum is now in its sixth decade of hosting Northwestern State basketball and is named after H. Lee Prather, the all-time winningest coach in Demon Basketball history. The 3,400-seat multi-purpose facility was constructed in 1963 and sits on the banks of Chaplain's Lake, just south of Turpin Stadium. It is home to men's and women's basketball and women's volleyball. During the spring semester, the Purple Haze Basketball Pep Band accompanies all men and women’s home games and post-season tournament play.

Band Scholarships General Requirements A 2.0 GPA (per semester) must be maintained to receive and sustain a band scholarship, and a 2.5 GPA is required for the out-of-state fee waiver. You must complete 12 academic hours per semester (24 for the combined fall and spring semesters). Courses taken in the summer sessions do not count toward maintaining a band scholarship or an out-of-state fee waiver. Students who do not pass any of the required band classes may be required to pay back the band scholarship for the semester in which they fail the class. If you have a class that conflicts with any of the large ensembles, a permit will be provided once all other available class options for the conflicting course have been exhausted. Band scholarships shall be revoked or reduced if the student fails to fulfill the scholarship requirements as listed in this handbook, the Department of Music Handbook, or the scholarship contract issued from the CAPA Office. All students on a band scholarship will perform a re-audition for the upcoming academic year in August, after the SON Band Camp. This process exists to: Allow returning students an opportunity for a scholarship increase due to greater proficiency on their instrument (pending available funds) Award students for taking on roles on secondary instruments, when requested, to provide proper ensemble balance Award financial incentives for our leadership team, who are taking on additional responsibilities Limit the taxing of students needed for multiple large ensembles

For all students on a band scholarship Enroll and participate in pre-season band camp (course enrollment information included in this newsletter) Attend and take part in weekly marching band rehearsals Perform in all scheduled marching band events

Music Majors Audition in August for the fall concert ensembles Music majors will fulfill their obligation to the band scholarship by auditioning for the Director of Bands, with possible placement in one of the following ensembles: Wind Symphony Fall Winds Wind/percussion section of the Symphony Orchestra A Music Major can audition for the Purple Haze Basketball Pep Band, however, doing so does not exclude them from the fall concert ensemble audition

Non-Music Majors Audition in August for the Purple Haze Basketball Pep Band Only 29 students will be selected for the Basketball Pep Band (with alternates also named) The Purple Haze Basketball Band will carry a supplemental scholarship for the Spring Semester. If a non-music major auditions for and is selected to the Wind Symphony and/or Fall Winds, they are not required to audition for the Basketball Pep Band

For over 100 years, the Northwestern State Band program has established a rich history of performance excellence. We strive to provide an exciting collegiate band experience while maintaining a family atmosphere through collegiality and common courtesy. To continue these traditions and uphold the ideals that make the band program a great individual investment, each member is expected to: demonstrate professional courtesy at all times; behave in a responsible manner, always exercising self-discipline; attend all classes regularly and on time; be prepared for each class; respect the rights and privileges of colleagues, professors, staff, and university officials; respect the property of others, including university property and facilities; support the NSU Band Program by maintaining a social media presence that does not reflect poorly on the organization; Students should always strive to do their best, showing behavior that is productive, disciplined, and focused, which helps improve the efficiency and success of all rehearsals and performances.

Hazing

There is no place in the University Band Program for hazing. Any report of hazing will be handled according to university policy. In compliance with Acts 635, 637, and 640 of the 2018 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature, and Act 382 of the 2019 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature, the 2019 Board of Regents Uniform Policy on Hazing, and the University of Louisiana System Policy on Hazing, the University reaffirms its Policy that any form of hazing of any student enrolled at the University is prohibited. Violation of this Policy can result in both disciplinary actions imposed by the organization and/or institution as well as criminal charges. Louisiana Law defines hazing as any intentional, knowing, or reckless act by a person acting alone or acting with others that is directed against another when both of the following apply: The person knew or should have known that such an act endangers the physical health or safety of the other person or causes severe emotional distress. The act was associated with pledging, being initiated into, affiliating with, participating in, holding office in, or maintaining membership in any organization. Hazing includes but is not limited to any of the following acts associated with pledging, being initiated into, affiliating with, participating in, holding office in, or maintaining membership in any organization: Physical brutality, such as whipping, beating, paddling, striking, branding, electric shocking, placing a harmful substance on the body, or similar activity. Physical activity, such as sleep deprivation, exposure to the elements, confinement in a small space, or calisthenics, that subjects the other person to an unreasonable risk of harm or that adversely affects the physical health or safety of the individual or causes severe emotional distress. Activity involving the consumption of food, liquid, or any other substance, including but not limited to an alcoholic beverage or drug, that subjects the individual to an unreasonable risk of harm that adversely affects the physical health or safety of the individual or causes severe emotional distress.

Activity that induces, causes, or requires an individual to perform a duty or task that involves the commission of a crime or an act of hazing. Physical activity that is normal, customary, and necessary for a person’s training and participation in an athletic, physical education, military training, or similar program sanctioned by the postsecondary education institution is not considered “hazing.” Northwestern State University further defines Hazing as any action taken or situation created intentionally or unintentionally – with or without consent – that endangers a student or creates a risk of injury, produces mental or physical harm, embarrassment, degradation, harassment, or ridicule – whether on or off campus – for the purpose of affiliation with, initiation into, or as a condition of continued membership in any student organization, club, group, or team. Other hazing activities may include, but are not limited to: All forms of physical activity that are not part of an organized and voluntary athletic contest or not specifically directed toward constructive work. Activities that significantly interfere with class, other University obligations (e.g. athletics, etc.) work, studying, and sleep. Explicitly or implicitly causing, inducing, pressuring, coercing, or requiring an individual to violate any federal, state, or local law, and/or University policy. Any action or situation that may lead to compromising an individual’s self-respect, moral or religious values, or suffering mental or emotional harm. Transporting individuals against their will, kidnapping, imprisoning, or abandoning an individual, which endangers the health or safety of that individual. Restraining or tying up individuals. Blindfolding (outside of the context of an approved ritual). Activities involving the placement of substances on or in the body of an individual (e.g., eggs, paint, honey, etc.). Lineups or interrogations. Pressuring individuals to get a brand, tattoo, shave their head, or modify their body in any way. Assigning meaningless tasks to individuals. Any form of personal servitude (e.g., driving, cleaning rooms, serving meals, washing cars, purchasing items on another’s behalf, etc.). Assigning “pranks” such as stealing, defacing property, and harassing other organizations and/or individuals. Scavenger hunts for meaningless items that promote trespassing, breaking the law, endanger members, or occur at unreasonable times. Forced memorization of non-essential information. Compelling any individual to wear or carry unusual or burdensome items. Activities intended to interfere with an individual's employment or family obligations. Excluding individuals from social contact.

Select individuals being solely responsible for an organization’s obligations. Requirements that financially take advantage of individuals. Explicitly or implicitly requiring an individual to wear any degrading, inappropriate, or uncomfortable garments. Conspicuous dress that is not expected of all organization members for events, activities, dress up days, etc. Preventing individuals from wearing any required garments or accessories. An organization is defined as a fraternity, sorority, association, corporation, order, society, corps, cooperative, club, service group, social group, band, spirit group, athletic team, or similar group whose members are primarily students at, or former students of, a postsecondary education institution, including the national or parent organization of which any of the underlying entities provided for in this definition is a sanctioned or recognized member at the time of the hazing. Pledging is any action or activity related to becoming a member of an organization, including recruitment and, rushing. Appropriate authority is defined as: Any state or local law enforcement agency 911 Public Safety Answering Point as defined in Title 33 of the Louisiana Revised Statutes of 1950. Emergency medical personnel. Reckless behavior is an activity or behavior in which a reasonable person knew or reasonably should have known that the activity or behavior may result in injury to another, including but not limited to, excessive consumption of alcohol, binge drinking, drag racing, consumption of any controlled dangerous substance, acts of hazing, or other similar activity. Serious bodily injury is bodily injury that involves unconsciousness, extreme physical pain, or protracted and obvious disfigurement, or protracted loss or impairment of the function of a bodily member, organ, or mental faculty, death, or a substantial risk of death. For more information on prevention and/or reporting, please consult the NSULA Student Handbook.

Alcohol & Drug Policy

If you are found with, or are suspected of being under the influence of alcohol, tobacco, or illegal drugs at any time while participating in a Northwestern State Band-sanctioned trip or activity, you will be immediately removed from the event/performance. At the next opportunity, the Director of Bands will notify the Dean of Students, law enforcement, and other appropriate university officials to launch their investigation. If it is found that the infraction impaired a student’s ability to perform or, in any way, compromised their/another student’s safety or well-being, the student will be dismissed from the band. If we are on an away trip, this may include the student needing to pay their way home at their own expense. Students who are dismissed from the band program at any point during the semester will receive a failing grade and, thus, will have to pay back their band scholarship.

Travel Expectations & Policies

Whether it is the SON traveling across an ocean or the Wind Symphony providing a concert across town, similar travel policies will be adhered to. When students are on an officially sanctioned trip representing the university, the rules and regulations follow the student. In short, if it is not permitted on campus, it is not permitted anywhere on the trip. Bus Expectations All university rules apply, including those mentioned by the supervising faculty member. For buses, students will be required to sit on the bus assigned unless prior arrangements are made with the supervising faculty, not a student leader. Hotel Expectations All university rules apply, including those mentioned by the supervising faculty member. For hotels, once student signups are concluded and room assignments sent to the hotel, students are required to be with the room assigned unless prior arrangements are made with the supervising faculty, not a student leader. Airline Expectations All university rules apply, including those mentioned by the supervising faculty member. For airlines, students will need to adhere to all rules set by the airline. As a reminder, performances off campus require you to represent not only yourself but also the institution. Due to the importance of our reputation and student safety, the band directors reserve the right to dismiss and send home, at the student’s expense, anyone who disobeys the rules and/or places the safety of other students in jeopardy. 18

School-Owned Instruments For members of the marching band, we encourage you to use your personal instrument if it is silver and approved by the staff. However, instruments are available during the band camp registration period. These instruments are issued based on availability and seniority. While a student has a school-owned instrument in their possession, YOU are responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of that instrument. The student is responsible for any damages caused to the instrument outside of normal wear and tear. If you encounter a problem with your instrument, please notify your section leader or a member of the Inventory Team. Athletic Band instruments will be returned after the final performance of the season in working order and with all parts intact, including any accessories (neck strap, etc). Please don't wait until this time to inform anyone about the defective instrument. (The only exception to this will be those students who are involved with the Purple Haze Pep Band). Concert Band instruments can only be checked out if the student is performing in a concert ensemble or preparing for a concert band audition. Certain instruments are checked out from the band office, while others are with the applied faculty (please inquire with a member of the Inventory Team). These instruments will be returned to the same person at after the final performance of the semester. A financial hold will be imposed on any student who does not return their band instrument. This hold will be at the full replacement value of the instrument at the time of the hold. Only the Director of Bands can lift the hold for any band instrument.

Instrument Lockers Lockers are assigned by members of the Operations Team starting during the pre-season camp. Preference is given: music majors who are members of the SON with large instruments or who have multiple instruments due to ensemble/scholarship commitments music majors participating in the SON SON members who have large instruments SON members music majors who are not members of the SON Students who are assigned a locker must use the combination lock and the locker assigned. At the end of the academic year (or in December if the student is graduating/going into an internship/residency), the student must check the locker back in to a member of the Operations Team by: clearing out the locker entirely of trash and personal items/school-owned instruments returning the combination lock

The Spirit The Spirit of of Northwestern Northwestern

Uniforms

Uniforms will be fitted and assigned at the beginning of the season during the pre-season band camp. These uniforms will be kept in the uniform storage room, where they will be maintained throughout the season. It is the responsibility of each member to ensure that their uniform is properly returned and hung as instructed by members of the uniform team. All members will pay attention to the uniform assignments given by the Associate Director of Bands. An inspection of the uniform being worn properly and with all parts will occur for each performance. All members will provide their own: black gloves black socks black marching shoes (if you have a pair from your past experience, please check with the SON staff and make sure they are acceptable. TBS will have shoes for sale during preseason camp). There is a strict NO JEWELRY policy during all SON performances (except wedding rings). All hair must be maintained so that it is as uniform as possible when shakos, ball caps, or no headgear is worn. Long hair should be tied at all times while in uniform. The Associate Director of Bands will outline expectations for all band members, depending on the uniform they are wearing. A financial hold will be placed on any student who fails to return their band uniform. This hold will be at the full replacement value of the uniform at the time of the hold, and ordered as an individual replacement. Only the Director of Bands can lift the hold for any uniform. 22

Attendance - SON

Excellence cannot be achieved if members are not present.

Members of the Spirit of Northwestern are required to be at all rehearsals and performances as outlined in this handbook and in the Summer Band Newsletter. Every effort is made to inform each member as early as possible about those rehearsals and performances. It is expected that each member put these dates in whatever mechanism they use for their personal organization. Accumulated tardiness and absences can affect final grades, overall GPA, scholarship, and/or future membership in the band program. Attendance is recorded electronically through the Ultimate Drill Book (UDB) app and will open 15 minutes before the rehearsal or performance. The check-in window closes 5 minutes after the start of rehearsal or the announced call time for an event. Students experiencing technical issues with the app that prevent proper check-in during the allotted time must notify the Staff Coordinator on the day the issue occurs. Section leaders will receive an attendance report every other week. Students are expected to address any attendance concerns noted on the report to the Associate Director of Bands before the end of the semester. For your convenience, a Season Attendance Roster is available for you to check attendance reporting discrepancies at any time (see next page).

The following attendance policy will govern all performing groups associated with the Spirit of Northwestern. 0-3 excused rehearsal absences = A 4 excused rehearsal absences = B 5 excused rehearsal absences = C 6 or more excused rehearsal absences = F Three late rehearsals will account for one unexcused absence.

Students who have a class conflict with marching band rehearsals must complete an Absence Excuse Form at the beginning of the semester. The Associate Director of Bands will approve or reject the request based on the following: are there any other sections of the conflicting class available? is the course required as part of the student’s degree plan? is it possible to take the course in an alternative semester? Approved absences/tardies due to class conflicts will not count towards the above-defined grades/repercussions. Students who are ill and must miss a rehearsal should complete an Absence Request Form in advance of the rehearsal when possible. For the absence to be excused, the student must visit the Health Center on campus, Urgent Care, or their primary care physician. Once a note is obtained, it can be loaded into the Absence Request Form. Students who are ill and cannot attend a performance must speak to the Associate Director of Bands in person or by phone (emails are not an acceptable way to make such a request). Students who receive an F in marching band may be required to repay the scholarship and may forfeit future membership. 24

NSU Bands Rehearsal Schedule SON, Wind Symphony, Fall Winds

Weather-Related Policies - SON Unless directed by the Associate Director of Bands, rehearsals are still scheduled to take place. The official channels for a cancellation or delay before rehearsal beginning will be via the following channels: the SON BAND App group NSU Email If a rehearsal must be delayed due to lightning in the area, the Associate Director of Bands will make that call and inform the ensemble members to seek shelter. A message (using the same channels) will be sent when it is safe to return to the SON practice field or if rehearsal is canceled early. When in doubt, ask a section leader. What guides the director’s decision regarding rehearsals and/or performances: Lightning The Associate Director of Bands uses Perry Weather to track lightning strikes in the area. There are three strike zones that assist the director in making a decision to postpone/cancel a rehearsal/performance: 15-30 mile zone = proceed with caution and use other elements/resources to determine if a hazard poses any level of threat to student safety 8-15 mile zone = seek shelter as conditions merit 0-8 mile zone = continue to remain in protected shelter

Heat Safety & Health/Wellness Students are responsible for monitoring their health and taking appropriate precautions before and during rehearsals and performances. The Associate Director of Bands will use Zelus WBGT to help determine the frequency and duration of water breaks. Students who regularly need to sit out because of heat-related concerns may be required to seek medical evaluation for their safety and that of others. The Health & Wellness Team will provide support and education regarding heat safety. Students should: Stay hydrated with electrolyte-containing fluids; avoid energy and highly caffeinated/sugary drinks. Eat a balanced meal 1–2 hours before rehearsal or performance. Carry a small snack if sensitive to heat. Use breaks to move into the shade, rest, and avoid playing. The Associate Director of Bands, in consultation with the Director of Bands and Athletic Trainers, has final authority regarding continued participation in marching band. Health & Wellness Tent The tent provides temporary, immediate relief for heat-related concerns during rehearsals. When a student visits, the Health & Wellness Team will ask questions to assess the situation and notify the Athletic Trainers, who will determine the appropriate next steps. These questions are necessary for student safety. The tent is not intended to accommodate extended or recurring absences for medical conditions unrelated to heat. Students requiring extended time away from rehearsal must provide documentation from a University official and/or an appropriate medical professional that includes an estimated return-to-participation timeline. Documentation will be reviewed by the Director of Bands in consultation with appropriate university administrators, including the Music Department Head, Director of Creative and Performing Arts, Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, Dean of Students, Athletic Trainers, Accessibility and Disability Services, or other relevant offices. This group will determine whether performance-based scholarship eligibility can continue when participation requirements cannot be met. The Health & Wellness Tent is a shared resource with limited capacity. Using it for its intended purpose allows us to provide timely assistance to students experiencing immediate heat-related concerns while ensuring appropriate medical accommodations are handled through the proper process.

Band Camp Band Camp is our opportunity to come together and develop the chemistry and work ethic that will shape the remainder of the season. Band Camp is a requirement for every SON member who is on a band scholarship (MUS 1300, 45N/48N), Come with a positive attitude and the drive to have the time of your life!

SON Rehearsal Etiquette Effective classroom management is one of the major keys to success for any teacher at any level. The marching band classroom offers many challenges when compared to the traditional academic setting and environment. Because of these challenges, the SON is guided by a few etiquette rules and guidelines that are best demonstrated in the SON Visual Manual presented below. In general, rank-and-file members must listen to the faculty member directing from the tower and/or his designee. The designee will typically be the visual coordinator, other assisting faculty members, graduate assistants, or the center-podium drum major. After a rep, students should consider the following to be the standard guideline: Listen to instructions from the tower Repeat the directions when prompted Take the ‘Set’ command from the center drum major podium Perform the task Remain at attention once the task is performed Take the “Check” and “Adjust” commands from the center-podium drum major (typically will ask the band to remain at attention and then make any adjustments related to drill placement) Relax while receiving feedback from the tower.

The ‘VIC’ Award Awarded to the student who exemplifies outstanding school spirit. Voted on by the students and selected by the student and faculty SON leadership. Scotty Dawson - Most Inspirational Award Awarded to the person who exemplifies true extrinsic and intrinsic motivation. Voted on by the students and selected by the Section Leaders. The Grit Award Awarded to the person who demonstrates ‘silent leadership’ and possesses the properties of ‘doing the right thing when no one is looking’. Voted on by the SON faculty. Rookie of the Year Awarded to the most outstanding first-year member of the band. Voted on by the members of the SON and selected by the Section Leaders. 1st Year Award Successful completion of one year in band. 2nd Year Award Successful completion of two years in band. 3rd Year Award Successful completion of three years in band. 4th Year Award Successful completion of four years in band. 5th Year Award Successful completion of five years in band. 6th Year Award Successful completion of six years in band.

Graduating Senior Award Awarded to all students who are in their final season with the SON due to degree completion or an approved internship/residency that prohibits an additional season to participate. Strive for the Highest Award Awarded to the student who embodies and idealizes the four pillars that helped found Kappa Kappa Psi: Brotherhood, Service, Leadership, and Musicianship. Selected by the brothers of Kappa Kappa Psi, Theta Nu chapter. For Greater Bands Award Awarded to the student who embodies the ideals of Music, Sisterhood, and Service. Selected by the sisters of Tau Beta Sigma, Eta Pi chapter. Ring of Honor Established during the Fall 2023 season, members of the Ring of Honor are chosen by their peers and the band faculty. It is one of the highest recognitions a member of the Spirit of Northwestern may achieve, as it symbolizes the lasting impact of their character, work ethic, and leadership, paired with exceptional service to the organization and unwavering loyalty to Northwestern State. Voted on by all members of the SON and selected by the SON faculty.

SON Student Leadership

Band Member Responsibilities Leadership is not limited to those with formal titles. It is the rank-and-file member who has some of the greatest influence with our audience and prospective students. The following is a list of responsibilities for each member of the Spirit of Northwestern (specific responsibilities for some of the positions mentioned below are included in the Coordinator/Operations Team Manual): be present and punctual to all rehearsals learn and memorize all music, drill, and commands follow orders with a positive attitude and respect those around you Drum Major - (reports to the Associate Director of Bands) highest ranking student member of the band work directly with staff and directors to lead rehearsals assist section leaders with teaching marching and playing fundamentals to the band

Woodwind/Brass Coordinator & Percussion Captain (reports to the Associate Director of Bands) primary spokesperson for the section answer any questions from band members promote leadership qualities and give everything maximum effort assist the section leaders with bi-weekly attendance checks with sections (serving as an advocate and reminding the students to check the link)

Section Leader - (reports to the Associate Director of Bands) conduct music and marching sectionals and warm-ups for your group address musical errors, proper posture, and marching form in the band, and make corrections assign part placement to members of the band fix errors in drill charts and parade formations address anything and make everything sound and look great ensure that all uniforms and instruments are maintained ensure that the section looks and sounds good at all times

Uniform Team - (reports to the Associate Director of Bands) a marching member of the SON for pregame and halftime and during the first half of football games pre-season band camp: organize uniforms for student registration organize uniform racks per section for maximum efficiency organize the primary and secondary uniform rooms so they are clean, functional, and provide an. environment that makes working in the space with ease ensure that all uniform parts assigned for performance are presentable for each student distribute and collect uniform parts as assigned by the Associate Director of Bands at the times communicated during the Spring semester organize the uniform room for any special functions requiring any/all uniform distribution reset the room so all uniforms are paired with like numbers for all parts/shakos in numerical order inventory for t-shirts (Young Performer’s Day, Summer Camps) are taken and provided to the Director of Bands

Media Team - (reports to the Associate Director of Bands) collect still photos and video of each event for the Band Program, with priority given to the Spirit of Northwestern assemble collected media for projects as directed by the Director of Bands create material for the band social media pages assist the Associate Director of Bands by monitoring section pages on social media (report to the Associate Director of Bands) travel with the band program to document and capture media for projects as directed by the Director of Bands

Health & Wellness - (reports to the Associate Director of Bands) provide educational opportunities for preventative body maintenance when dealing with performance health provide immediate care for the members of the Spirit of Northwestern if medical care is needed until athletic trainers/EMS arrives on the scene set up medical tent/chairs in the designated space during each rehearsal maintain an iPad for the use of documentation for all medical occurrences travel with the SON on away performances to provide immediate care until official EMS is on the scene

Concert Ensembles at Northwestern State Concert Ensembles at Northwestern State

The concert ensembles at Northwestern State University are open to all students, regardless of their major. Select ensembles - Fall Winds and Spring Winds - are also open to the public. Music education majors are encouraged to take advantage of performing on secondary instruments and leading several of our ensembles from sight-reading to performance.

Fall Concert Ensembles Wind Symphony

Monday & Wednesday during Fall semester - 12:30-1:45 p.m.

The Wind Symphony is the premier concert band at Northwestern State. Membership is selected by audition each semester (on occasion, the Wind Symphony may audition in the fall semester for seating for the entire year when invited performances merit). The Wind Symphony has a rich history in commissioning new works for band by renowned composers such as Martin Ellerby, Charles Fernandez, Dennis Llinás, John Mackey, Randall Standridge, and Roger Zare to name a few. This ensemble represents the NSU Band Program by touring annually throughout the region and beyond. In 2019, the NSU Wind Symphony was invited to perform at the World Association of Symphony Bands and Ensembles in Buñol, Spain, along with ensembles from Australia, Canada, Italy, Spain, and Portugal. The ensemble also hosted and performed at the Southern Regional Conference of the College Band Directors National Association under former director, Dr. Jeff Mathews

Fall Winds

Select Fridays - 12:30-1:45 p.m.

Fall Winds is led by Dr. Andrew Blair. Membership is selected by audition during the Wind Symphony auditions. The ensemble performs one concert in November. Music education students who wish to be considered to lead the ensemble must have taken the conducting course or must currently be enrolled. Student conductors will meet with members of the band staff to discuss rehearsal strategies and plans to better prepare the ensemble for performance. Administrative work by the student conductors is expected, including actingas clinicians for their peers, preparing the physical space for rehearsal, and designing the concert program. Student conductors will be solicited by the band staff.
