Endowed Chairs A gift of $600,000 is matched by $400,000 from the Louisiana Board of Regents Support Fund to create a $1 million endowment. Interest generated by the endowment is used to support the work of a nationally recognized authority or scholar in a specific academic area. These scholars help attract outstanding students and enhance the academic reputation of the university.
2003 Erbon and Marie Wise Endowed Chair in Journalism
Maj. Gen. Erbon W. Wise was an author and publisher of several weekly and daily newspapers in Louisiana and Texas. He served 27 years in the U.S. Army Air Force, the U.S. Selective Service System, U.S. Army Reserves and the Louisiana National Guard. Wise was Adjutant General and State Director of the Selective Service System, Civil Defense and the Office of Emergency Preparedness. Wise and his wife Marie set up the first endowed chair at Northwestern.
2005 Melba Law Steeg Endowed Chair in Education
Melba Law Steeg worked tirelessly as a business and civic leader in the New Orleans Area. By being the first woman on many of the boards and commissions on which she served, Steeg provided many opportunities for women. Steeg worked with religious, artistic, educational, medical and business groups to improve the quality of life in her community. An endowed chair in educational leadership was established at NSU in her honor.
2006 Charles Ragus Founder of Advocare, Family Endowed Chair in Business
Charlie Ragus was a successful businessman, building AdvoCare into one of the Dallas area’s fastest growing companies. The company was founded because of Ragus’ concerns about the health of others. A member of the football team at Northwestern, Ragus played with the Kansas City Chiefs. The first endowed chair in the NSU School of Business was named in his honor.
Professorships
A gift of $60,000 is matched by $40,000 from the Board of Regents Support Fund to create a $100,000 endowment. Northwestern faculty members can use interest generated by the endowment to conduct research which they bring back to the classrooms to enhance instruction. Endowed professorships help retain and attract excellent faculty members. These professorships can be rotated within academic colleges or departments to strengthen the entire academic program at the university.
